5 bodies reportedly found off Sicily coast, 1 still missing after luxury superyacht sank in freak storm. Here's what we know about the incident.

Four bodies were reportedly recovered off the coast of Sicily on Wednesday by divers searching for passengers who were aboard a luxury superyacht that sank earlier this week, the Italian coast guard said. A fifth body has been spotted and will be recovered on Thursday, while one person still remains missing.
The diving crews brought body bags to the port in Porticello, Italy, but none of the deceased have been identified yet.
The yacht sank on Monday after it was caught in the middle of an unexpected and violent storm. One person, the ship's chef, was recovered Monday.
Among the six passengers unaccounted for on Monday were British tech magnate Mike Lynch, sometimes referred to as the “British Bill Gates,” and his daughter; Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer; and American lawyer Chris Morvillo.
What happened?
The Bayesian capsized while about half a mile off the coast of Porticello, a small fishing village. There were 22 people on board — 12 passengers and 10 crew members. The City Council of Bagheria said in a statement that seven adults were taken to the emergency room following the rescue, but “it seems that none are in serious conditions.”
While crews searched for the remaining bodies, others are trying to confirm why the boat sank in the first place. According to a BBC report , a heavy storm hit the coast of Sicily and created waterspouts , which are tornadoes that form over water. The waterspout winds were so powerful that they broke the boat’s mast in half, causing the ship, which was anchored, to lose its balance and sink.
The U.K.’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch plans to send a team of four investigators to make a preliminary assessment of why the Bayesian sank and why people were still on board.
As the ship was going down, 15 people were able to make it to safety and were rescued by a nearby boat.
The crew on a Dutch-flagged vessel nearby noticed the yacht had disappeared and saw flares being set off in the sea. They went to help survivors before the Italian coast guard could arrive.
One British passenger, Charlotte Golunski, told reporters she kept her 1-year-old daughter alive by holding her up above the water until they got on a lifeboat.
What to know about the Bayesian
Charter sites list the yacht’s weekly rent as $215,000, the Associated Press reported .
Boat International , a superyacht and luxury yacht guide, reported that the Bayesian had the tallest aluminum mast in the world at over 240 feet, making it one of the 50 largest sailing yachts in the world.
Who is Mike Lynch?
Lynch, 59, founded the software firm Autonomy and recently faced a legal battle with U.S.-based Hewlett-Packard after the tech company accused him of inflating Autonomy’s value in an $11 billion sale in 2011.
Lynch was acquitted of multiple fraud charges in June after a three-month trial, avoiding a potential 20-year jail sentence.

Family clings to hope of air pocket in sunken superyacht as debris hampers search
PORTICELLO, Sicily — Divers searching for six missing people from a superyacht which sank off the coast of Sicily told NBC News Wednesday that debris inside the vessel, as well as its depth, were making their job difficult.
As hopes of finding anyone alive dwindled, the divers said that they had managed to force open one of the Bayesian’s access doors but access to the cabins where people could be trapped was being hampered by detritus.
The divers, who were not authorized to speak publicly, added that the depth of the wreck meant they were left with only 10 minutes to search the 184-foot yacht once they reached it. Then they had to return to the surface, they said.
On Wednesday, the dock where they set off from was swarming with vehicles, boats and rescuers. Nearby tourists, reporters and photographers have gathered, eager for news. Helicopters occasionally fly over the area.
British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and five of the 22 other people who were aboard the yacht remain unaccounted for and are believed to be trapped in the Bayesian’s hull, nearly 170 feet underwater.
Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda, are also missing.
Officials confirmed Monday that at least one person, the ship’s cook, had died.
Rescuers said Tuesday that there might be people trapped inside the cabins, especially considering the timing of the storm, but that they had so far been unable to check through the ship’s portholes.
“The operations are long and complex,” Italy’s national fire department, whose diving teams have been participating in the search, said on X .
Italy's coast guard also said Tuesday that divers were also using a remotely-operated underwater vehicle to aid in the search.
The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was one of the 15 people rescued Monday after it capsized near Sicily’s main city of Palermo in what Italian officials called a “violent storm.”
Built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered Bayesian could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.
Lynch, who was regularly described in U.K. media as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” was acquitted by a San Francisco jury of fraud charges stemming from the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion.
Prosecutors alleged that Lynch and Autonomy’s vice president for finance, Stephen Chamberlain, had padded the firm’s finances ahead of the sale. Lynch’s lawyers argued that HP was so eager to acquire Autonomy that it failed to adequately check the books .
The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who brought Morvillo, one of his U.S. lawyers and Bloomer, who testified in his defense, on the trip.
Bloomer’s twin brother, Jeremy, told the BBC on Tuesday the family was “coping the best we can” and he was hopeful there might still be air pockets inside the hull.
Chamberlain was not aboard the Bayesian.
In what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a car struck and killed Chamberlain on Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.

MIKE LYNCH AND DAUGHTER HANNAH
Tech entrepreneur Lynch built Britain's biggest software company, Autonomy. Often dubbed Britain's Bill Gates, the 59-year-old was lauded by shareholders, scientists and politicians when he sold it to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011.
But in late 2012, HP said it had found a massive accounting scandal at the business, and wrote off $8.8 billion of its value. Lynch spent the next 12 years trying to clear his name and was acquitted on all criminal charges just weeks ago in the United States.
After the sale of Autonomy, Lynch founded Invoke Capital, a technology venture capital fund.
Lynch's daughter Hannah, 18, is also missing. A Sunday Times profile of Lynch last month said Hannah was preparing to study English literature at the University of Oxford.
His wife, Angela Bacares, who owns the vessel, was also aboard it but was rescued.
JONATHAN BLOOMER AND WIFE JUDY BLOOMER
Jonathan Bloomer appeared as a character witness in Lynch's legal case earlier this year. Bloomer has been non-executive chair of Morgan Stanley International since 2016, and is the chair of international specialist insurer, Hiscox.
He was also chief executive of insurance and investment company Prudential from 2000 to 2005.
He studied physics at London's Imperial College in the 1970s, according to his LinkedIn profile.
One of Bloomer's former employees wrote on LinkedIn he was "always a friendly, approachable and engaging man".
Hiscox Chief Executive Aki Hussain said in a statement on Tuesday they were deeply shocked and saddened and their thoughts were with all those affected, in particular Bloomer and his wife Judy, who was also aboard the yacht.
Judy, who studied English language and literature at Homerton College in Cambridge, has worked as a psychotherapist for nearly 30 years, specialising in anxiety and stress. She started her career as a teacher.
CHRISTOPHER MORVILLO AND WIFE NEDA MORVILLO
American Christopher Morvillo, a partner at law firm Clifford Chance in New York City, was part of Lynch's defence team, fighting a long legal battle to acquit his client. His first ever post on LinkedIn was around two months ago to celebrate the court victory.
"None of this would have been possible without your love and support," Morvillo wrote to his family in the post, including his wife, Neda Morvillo.
Before joining Clifford Chance in November 2011, Morvillo worked as a principal at Morvillo Abramowitz Grand Iason & Anello PC, providing advice on white collar criminal defence and regulatory matters.
Morvillo, who studied law at Fordham University, also worked as an assistant United States attorney for the Southern District of New York between 1999 and 2005, assisting in the criminal investigation arising out of the Sept. 11 attacks.
David Oscar Markus, a criminal defence lawyer and podcast host, interviewed Morvillo last week. He wrote a blog describing him as a "superstar lawyer".
"Chris dedicated over a decade of his career to obtaining justice for Mike Lynch," Markus wrote. "He got it and then for this to happen.... it's tough to find the right words."

- Vacationing on a superyacht may sound like it's all Champagne and sunbathing.
- But before boarding a luxury vessel, superyacht captain Kelly Gordon advises keeping certain things in mind.

One of these images is likely what comes to mind when you hear the word "superyacht," a phrase generally used to describe a yacht over 80 feet in length.
While ultra-luxurious vessels are associated with all things carefree, tragic events such as the sinking of the Bayesian superyacht off the coast of Sicily on Monday is a reminder that yachting is a pastime with unique risks and nuances. It's unclear what the protocols were on the Bayesian.
For those keen on the idea of chartering a superyacht, captain Kelly Gordon, 42, told Business Insider there are a number of important factors to consider before hopping on board.
Gordon fell in love with yachting after she stepped aboard a yacht for the first time in her mid-20s.
Hellbent on reaching captain level, Gordon quickly worked her way up the chain of command. She's spent most of her time sailing the Bahamas and the Caribbean and is now based in Florida, where she works as a captain on a 108-foot-long privately owned vessel.
Gordon, who has over 12,600 followers on Instagram , shares three factors to keep in mind before boarding a chartered superyacht.
Think of the process of chartering a superyacht as buying a house
One of the most important things to do when chartering a superyacht is to work with a charter broker, Gordon says.
"The charter manager's job is to No. 1: find you a safe boat," Gordon said, adding that in her experience, "Not all programs put safety as high up on the list as it should be."
She also likes to equate charter brokers to Realtors in that they take on the role of finding you the best option for your taste.

"You find one that you gel with really well and has a good reputation, and then you discuss with them what your budget is, where you want to go, what your activity levels are, what your personalities are like," Gordon said.
Pairing clients with a crew that aligns with their characteristics is a huge part of a charter broker's job, Gordon said.
"If you think about it, you're living with that crew for 24/7, around the clock," she said. "You're not going put someone that just wants to sit and read books all day with a crew that's extremely active."
Find a crew that is competent and prioritizes safety
Charter brokers also help match clients with a competent crew that prioritizes safety.
"I don't know that many people realize just how much their life is in our hands when we cast those lines and we go to sea," Gordon said.
Part of that is having a safety briefing, which Gordon carries out every time she welcomes clients onto a chartered vessel before leaving a dock.
A thorough safety briefing includes informing clients about the location of safety equipment and lifejackets and the procedures for events such as a fire, a person falling overboard, or the boat sinking.
"You should have a safety briefing, and if you don't get one, you should ask for one," Gordon said.
The process, she added, can be different on privately owned yachts, where passengers may be familiar with the vessel.
The Bayesian is a private yacht owned by tech tycoon Mike Lynch; it's not yet known what kind of safety protocols staff and guests were trained on.
Make sure there's a member of the crew on watch 24/7
"A lot of charter guests think when they go to sleep, the crew goes to sleep," Gordon said.
But that shouldn't be the case, she added. "You want to be on a boat knowing that someone's up, because if the weather changes or the anchor starts to drag, you need somebody that's up and ready to go and get everybody else to handle it."
Among the biggest weather risks are tornados, which can be extremely difficult to predict and prepare for whether you're on land or at sea.
"I'm from the Midwest, where tornados pop up," Gordon said. "It's hard to see a tornado coming, and if you do see it coming, the tornado goes where it wants to go."
Most often, that leaves people near the weather event with just minutes to ready themselves, which is even trickier "in the middle of the night."
While rapid changes in weather are tough to contend with, Gordon recommends researching the areas you are sailing in beforehand, like you would when visiting a new country.
"It's no different than if you're going on vacation on land," she said. "You want to know where you're going. Don't put that just all on the crew."
While the research doesn't have to be as extensive as the crew should be doing, it's important to still be "responsible for your own self as well as your family and your guests."

Fishing licenses can be purchased at Wal-mart or Academy stores, or online at the Texas Parks and Wildlife website . Wahoo is enjoying record sales of its luxury superyacht tenders. The company has six boats in production in its manufacturing plant in Southampton, with sales about to close on four more.
The Shadow superyacht tender by Wahoo
Wahoo announced six new models at the Antibes Yacht Show earlier this year, spearheaded by a brand new all-weather limousine and a 6.2 m SOLAS rescue tender. The existing 350, 600 and 700HP vessels have all been upgraded with improved hulls and refreshed interiors.
“The Wahoo brand is fast becoming the tender of choice for discerning superyacht owners, “ said Wahoo’s MD Paul Holland.
The early part of 2014 also saw the signing of an important alliance with the Greek shipping group Spanopoulos who will be actively marketing Wahoo to its clients and a broader audience of superyacht owners and captains in the region.
New limousine revealed
Wahoo has revealed plans for a sensational new limousine called The Shadow. The 10.6m all-weather superyacht tender has been designed exclusively for Wahoo by Spline Naval Architecture and is available to order now. The custom-built vessel can carry up to 14 guests in a dry, luxurious and climate-controlled environment making it the ideal premium tender for a large superyacht. In its standard form, The Shadow will be powered by twin 270HP Yanmar steams linked to a Hamilton Jet Drive, but other power options are available as part of Wahoo’s customisation programme.
Wahoo MD Paul Holland said: “The Shadow takes limousine design and construction to a new level and marks an important milestone for Wahoo.”

The entire range of Wahoo superyacht tenders has been remodeled with upgrades to the hulls and refinements to the superstructures and seating configuration. The new models are the result of collaboration between Wahoo and the design house Spline Naval Architecture.
Wahoo technical director Julian Willmott said: “The original hull has been praised for its excellent handling characteristics, but we wanted to squeeze out an even better performance which we have now achieved.”
The interiors have been redesigned giving the range a more contemporary look whilst retaining the classic Wahoo sports feel.
There are now six models in the range, each fully customisable with power, length and trim options.

Wahoo announces The Shadow Luxury Limousine superyacht tender
Wahoo, the Southampton-based RIB and tender builder, has released details of its new luxury limousine superyacht tender, The Shadow.
Designed by Wayne Huntley of Spline Naval Architecture, the custom-built Shadow will be able to carry up to 14 guests in a dry, climate-controlled, luxury environment, making it the ideal all-weather super-limousine for the most discerning of superyacht owners.
In its standard form, The Shadow will be powered by twin 270hp Yanmar diesels through a Hamilton Jet Drive. Other power options are available as part of Wahoo’s customisation programme.
Paul Holland, Wahoo’s Managing Director, says, 'The Shadow takes limousine design and construction to a new level, and marks an important milestone for Wahoo. We are delighted to be working with Spline Naval Architecture.' Wahoo launched The Shadow at the Antibes Yacht Show this spring alongside a 2014 refresh of its current range.
