Bombardier will present the awards to its Diamond suppliers during a ceremony to be held in Montréal on September 16, 2024.

Suppliers are recognized across three categories – Production, Indirect Goods and Services, and Aftermarket. Bombardier Diamond Suppliers have met the operational performance levels needed to qualify in these specific categories for the 2023 calendar year.

Electric Candela hydrofoil boat sets world record by crossing Baltic Sea

An all-electric hydrofoiling boat from Swedish company Candela has set two new world records by travelling between Stockholm and the Finnish autonomous region of Åland, marking the first time an electric boat has crossed the Baltic Sea.
Candela, which has developed a range of electric hydrofoil boats and ships, wanted to demonstrate that “that zero-emission sea travel is not only possible today, but that foiling electric ships and boats are so much cheaper to operate than fossil-fuelled vessels.”
The record-breaking journey was undertaken in the Candela C-8, a €330,000 ($A544,500) leisure craft, equipped with a battery from technology partner Polestar.
The journey covered 150 nautical miles from the port of Frihamn in Stockholm, Sweden, to Mariehamn, the capital and largest town of the Åland Islands, an autonomous region of Finland, with a charging stop in Kapellskär.
While charging along the trip was made mostly with existing charging infrastructure, a 40kW Kempower Movable Charger was needed in Kapellskär.
Leaving from Frihamn at 6am, the Candela C-8 made it to Mariehamn by lunchtime, and returned to Frihamn the same day.

“The disadvantage of electric boats has been their short range, due to traditional boat hulls consuming so much energy,” said Gustav Hasselskog , the company’s CEO and founder.
“With our hydrofoil technology, we combine high speed and range, but you get so many other benefits. Flying over the Åland Sea in total silence and without slamming was absolutely magical.”
A gasoline-powered chase boat of similar size accompanied the Candela C-8 on the journey and had to be refuelled for a cost of €750, or around $A1,230. For comparison, the Candela C-8 consumed 213 kWh of electricity, at a cost of about €40-50 (around $A66-83).
“We actually had range anxiety, but not for the Candela,” said Gustav Hasselskog.
“The irony is that the photographer’s gasoline-powered chase boat had to refuel six times during the trip, while we only charged three times.
“We’re talking about 95% lower operating costs,” concluded Hasselskog. “This is a revolution that makes waterborne transöport competitive with land transport in terms of costs, which we will now demonstrate in public transport in Stockholm.”

We are definitely in an age of disruption, as much as the bashers, critics and cynics like to deny it. Amazing, 1/25th the cost of their ICE partner boat! And quieter, cleaner and calmer too boot!
Google informs me a litre of diesel is € 1.668, so that trip would have used ~450 litres of diesel, or 4,500 kWh. That’s shockingly inefficient.

Looking for manual for Bombardier 4.8. Any copies or original. New to this boat and sailing and need all the help I can get.

Multiple major highways closed in Brunswick County and other traffic impacts due to flooding
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) - Several roads are closed and traffic is being affected by heavy rain Monday morning in the Wilmington area.
Brunswick County
The Acme-Delco-Riegelwood Fire Department and N.C. Department of Transportation are reporting that U.S. 17 (Ocean Highway West) is closed near Sellers Road in both directions.
A portion of N.C. 211 is also closed, along with part of U.S. 74 in Columbus County.
Per the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, road closure includes:

City officials have closed all inbound roads to thru and non-essential traffic due to road collapse.
Road closures as of Monday afternoon, provided by the City of Southport:
- NC 211 at Duke Progress Canal between Walmart and Dosher Cutoff due to road collapse and water main break. The road is closed in both directions until further notice.
- E. Moore Street near Turtlewood subdivision and Harbor Oaks due to road collapse. The road is closed in both directions until further notice.
- 500 block of E. Moore Street due to a partial collapse. The road is passable but use extreme caution.
- NC 211 at Executive Park Blvd (near St. James) has collapsed. The road is closed in both directions until further notice.
Other incidents in Southport are:
- W. 11th at Lord and Caswell
- Leonard St at Jabbertown Rd
- E. 11th at Brunswick Apartments
- Robert Ruark at Southport Way
- Fodale Ave at N. Howe, entrance to Dosher Memorial Hospital
- W. 12th from Howe to Caswell
- Cades Cove at 14th Street
Carolina Beach
The Town of Carolina Beach says that the community is advised to avoid driving while the flooding continues throughout the town.
The bridge leading into Oak Island has been closed. Per the town as of 11:30 a.m.:
- E Oak Island Drive at SE 51st Street is closed
- The Northbound lane of Long Beach Road is closed
- The 3400 block of NC 211 (near Pine Forest) is closed
Bladen County
The Elwell Ferry is closed until Monday, Sept. 23, due to high water.

Bombardier 3.8 is a 12 ′ 5 ″ / 3.8 m monohull sailboat built by Bombardier Ltd. starting in 1974.
Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
