Top 10 Largest Superyachts Owned by Arabs

It comes as no surprise that Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman has a yacht on the list, the 'Serene'. (Wikipedia - Creative Commons)

Owning a superyacht is the dream for many aspiring billionaires, but with eye-watering price tags in the hundreds of millions it is unlikely most of us will even step foot on one, let alone own one!

But for the world’s richest and most powerful Arabs, owning a superyacht is no big deal. In fact, Arab names dominate the list of owners of the world’s largest superyachts.

So get ready for some serious bling - here are the top 10 largest superyachts owned by Arabs in 2018, according to Wikipedia.

10. Katara - Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani

Katara is the $300 million superyacht owned by none other than the former Emir of Qatar, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. Delivered to the incredibly wealthy emir in 2010, this yacht is the pinnacle of luxury. At 124m in length, it comes in at number 10 on our list.

9. Al Mirqab - Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani

This 133m-long superyacht is owned by Qatar’s former Prime Minister, Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani. This monster of the ocean reportedly holds a cinema, an indoor swimming pool and an outdoor jacuzzi.

8. Serene - Mohammed bin Salman

It will come as no surprise that Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman has a yacht on this list. It was not custom built for him, rather it was built for a Russian tycoon and the crown prince couldn’t resist it, reportedly spending over $650million for it.

7. Al Salamah - Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz (d. 2011)

It’s not certain who owns the superyacht Al Salamah now, since the death of its owner Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia. But the vessel is thought to be equipped with an onboard hospital as well as a library!

6. Yas - Hamdan bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan

This slightly odd looking superyacht is the property of Hamdan bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, an Emirati politician and member of the royal family. It was apparently dolphin inspired, but looks a little bit more like a spaceship in water.

5. Topaz - Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan

Topaz is Deputy PM of the UAE Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s $525 million superyacht. At 147m, it’s one of the largest yachts in the world, and reportedly has two helipads and a swimming pool.

4. Prince Abdulaziz - Saudi King Fahad (d. 2005) / Royal Family

The Prince Abdulaziz was actually the longest motor yacht in the world for a whopping 22 years, until losing that place in 2006. It might not look the fanciest, but it can hold up to 64 guests and requires a crew of up to 65.

3. Al Said - Sultan Qaboos of Oman

At 155m, Sultan Qaboos’ yacht Al Said is currently the fifth largest in the world, and the third largest owned by an Arab. Boasting an enormous helipad, the yacht actually looks more like a cruise ship or passenger ferry than a luxury superyacht.

2. Dubai - Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s $400 million, 162m superyacht has a startling seven decks, and a spiral staircase to help you climb up and down them!

1. Azzam - Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan

Well, here we are - the number 1 spot! But not only is the 180m Azzam the largest superyacht owned by an Arab, it is also the largest superyacht in the world overall! This monster is owned by none other than Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the UAE. It is thought to have cost $600 million to build.

Well, that concludes our list! Which of these yachts would you say is the most beautiful?

7 must-see pieces from the V&A's Al Thani collection exhibition

Ceremonial sword.

Whether it's displaying fine art or a garage full of the best water toys , many superyachts are also floating homes to their owner's personally curated collections. Few, however, have collections quite like the Al Thani family.

The ruling house of Qatar, this sprawling family counts among its members Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani owner of Al Mirqab , Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani owner of Katara and Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani owner of Stargate .

As this list of some of the largest superyachts in the world may suggest, the Al Thani family is not new to a little curation and over the generations has amassed an unrivalled collection of priceless art and objects of Indian descent.

Silk sword sash

This autumn the V&A will display key pieces from the Al Thani family private collection as part of its India Festival. So extensive is the collection that the exhibition will provide a comprehensive span of Indian design ranging from Mughal jades and a rare jewelled gold finial from the throne of Tipu Sultan to contemporary pieces by fine jewellers including JAR and Bhagat.

The exhibition itself is the brainchild of HH Sheikh Hamad bin Abdullah Al Thani, one the family's most avid curators who, fittingly, was inspired to increase the private collection after visiting the V&A's Maharaja exhibition in 2009.

Diamond pendant brooch

Unsurprisingly the V&A is not the first museum wishing to display the pieces. Last year the collection received its first major exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in New York where it garnered rave reviews. Bringing these objects to London is a move motivated by Sheikh Hamad's desire to offer access to and educate as many people as possible about these wonderful pieces.

Emerald, sapphire and diamond brooch

Being a family of international influence the Al Thani's have not confined themselves to collecting purely pieces of Indian descent, however. Among the collection is a selection of stunning jewels and ornaments from renowned names, such as Cartier, which document the huge influence Indian design has had on fashion, interior design and style over the past two centuries.

Alongside the exhibition the V&A will host a series of workshops and events to help visitors make the most of this magnificent collection. Guided tours will take place every Thursday until January while special talks and lectures will be given on a host of topics from speakers including Michael Palin, photographer and writer James Wellings and artist Subodh Gupta.

The exhibition will also be accompanied by a beautifully shot coffee table book exploring 100 objects from the Al Thani family collection in further detail. Other exhibitions running as part of the India Festival include The Fabric of India, Musical Wonders of India and Captain Linnaeus Tripe: Photographer of India and Burma, 1852-1860.

Bejewelled Treasures: The Al Thani Collection runs from 21 November 2015 - 28 March 2016 at the V&A Museum, London. Visit vam.ac.uk for tickets and information.

The leader of the world’s richest nation has just handed power over to his son 18 years after he stripped his own father of the title in a successful coup d’état. But who is the Emir of Qatar? And why has he decided to abdicate?

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani was born into a life of unimaginable wealth in Doha, the Qatari capital, in 1952.

At the time of his birth, his distant relative Sheikh Ali bin Abdullah Al Thani ruled the country as the fourth Emir in an unbroken line of the House of Thani – a royal dynasty that can trace its roots back to the pre-Islamic Banu Tamim tribe.

As a young man Sheikh Hamad began his education in Qatar, continuing his schooling at the prestigious Sandhurst Military Academy in England, which would later hold Princes William and Harry among its alumni.

By the time Sheikh Hamad graduated from Sandhurst in 1971, the crown had passed to his first-cousin-once-removed, Sheikh Ahmad bin Ali Al Thani.

Sheikh Ahmad’s reign was considered a real turning point in the history of Qatar, with the state granted independence from the United Kingdom in 1971 and, at around the same time, acquiring vast wealth due to the discovery of untapped oil fields in the region.

Sheikh Hamad was quickly appointed a Lieutenant Colonel in the Qatari armed forces upon graduation from Sandhurst, and helped his father wrestle control of the country from Sheikh Ahmad in 1972.

Now under the rule of his father Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani - the fifth Emir of Qatar - Sheikh Hamad was appointed to the rank of Major General and appointed Commander in Chief of the Qatari Armed Forces, overseeing a major recruitment and resources drive.

Throughout the 1980s Sheikh Hamad held various government positions, effectively managing Qatar’s social and economic policies, and in 1992 he took over the day-to-day running of the country from his father.

In 1995, Sheikh Hamad saw his chance to claim complete power however, waiting for his father to leave the country on a visit to Switzerland before deposing him in a bloodless coup. He even went as far as freezing his exiled father’s assets to prevent any counter-coups, of which there was only one serious attempt.

During his 18 years in power, Sheikh Hamad has been considered a progressive leader – vocally supporting children’s charities and encouraging education along with his second wife, Sheika Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned. He has also played an active role in developing sports in Qatar, leading to the country hosting high profile tennis and athletics events, and securing the 2022 Fifa World Cup.

Although he had wrestled power from his father, Sheikh Hamad’s autocratic reign was reasonably peaceful, and he even went as far as to vocally support the Arab Spring uprisings that began in 2011.

With a stable government, Sheikh Hamad was able to focus on turning Qatar from a small desert backwater into a major world power by continuing to exploit the country’s vast oil fields, and discovering and tapping the world’s third largest gas reserves.

By 2010 liquefied natural gas production had reached 77 million tonnes, making Qatar the richest county in the world. With less than two million inhabitants - and only 250,000 of those full citizens - the average income in the country shot to a staggering $86,440 a year per person.

Qatar expert Olivier Da Lage said: “When he came to power in 1995, Sheikh Hamad had a goal to place Qatar on the world map by exploiting the gas resources which his father Sheikh Khalifa did not develop for fear it would change the emirate's society.”

He added: “Eighteen years on, he has finished the job – Qatar has acquired the financial clout to command respect from neighbouring countries and Western governments alike”.

Far from just relying on income from gas and oil, Sheikh Hamad invested billions of dollars is businesses including Volkswagen, Total, Sainsbury’s, and Barclays bank.

One of the state’s most successful business ventures, however, was to develop the first pan-Arab satellite news channel, Al-Jazeera.

The channel, which broadcasts in English as well as Arabic, is preparing to launch Al-Jazeera America and is considered among the world’s most respected media organisations.

The main criticism of Sheikh Hamad’s rule has been from religious conservative groups in the Arab world, who condemn him for forging links with Western nations, including Israel.

So, after 18 successful years in power, why has Sheikh Hamad chose to abdicate now? And who’ll be the new Emir?

Sheikh Hamad, now 61, has battled with poor health in recent years, including serious problems with his kidneys.

Diplomats refuse to say whether this had an influence on the abdication however, simply stating Sheikh Hamad has decided the time was right for a younger man to rule the country to reflect the emergence of youth-driven politics in the Arab world.

In an outgoing message, Sheikh Hamad said: “I declare that I will hand over the reins of power to Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and I am fully certain that he is up to the responsibility, deserving the confidence, capable of shouldering the responsibility and fulfilling the mission”.

He added: “You, our children, are the munitions of this homeland… we have always thought well of you, by virtue of your genuine eagerness and sincere achievements have proven to be ready to lead and take our confidence.”

He went on: “We believe that the Arab world is one human body, one coherent structure, that draws its strength from all its constituent parts.”

Sheikh Hamad’s heir is Sheikh Tamin bin Hamad al Thani, his 33-year-old fourth son.

With little international profile, the incoming eighth Emir has largely focussed on domestic issues at home, but he is known to have studied at Harrow public school in England, before following in his father’s footstep and graduating from Sandhurst in 1998.

He currently has two wives and six children.

A £300 million-pound superyacht belonging to the Qatari Royal Family has docked in the UK.

The Katara, one of the largest mega super yachts in the world, was spotted berthed in Falmouth, Cornwall , next to luxury cruise liner The World.

It is believed the yacht is owned by the 40-year-old current Emir of Qatar Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani or by Sheikh Nawaf bin Jassim Bin Jabor Al-Thani, chairman of the Katara Hospitality Group.

The 7,922 ton yacht, complete with helicopter deck, satellite domes, tenders, and jet skis, was built in Germany at the Lurssen yard.

The boat is due to leave Cornwall tomorrow, according to the Falmouth Harbour Commissioners' website.

Up to 34 guests can stay on board the yacht and it has capacity for 95 crew members.

The yacht is one of the largest in the world.

It is 124m long and generally cruises at about 20 knots.

CORNISH NASTY

Meanwhile, Cornwall Council has slammed "ignorant" visitors for refusing to wear masks as thousands descended on beaches this weekend.

Worried locals fear a regional lockdown will be enforced and blasted huge crowds for turning the south coast into "Benidorm on steroids".

Cornwall  Council deputy leader Adam Paynter said there are fears in the community of a rise in  coronavirus  cases due to the inlux of vistors.

He also hit out at "ignorant" tourists who have been refusing to wear masks as they head to the south west to soak up the 37.8C heat.

Speaking on LBC, Councillor Paynter said: "I've heard two different incidents where people have been overheard saying: 'Well, I'm not going to wear a mask.

"I came down here to get away from all of that'.

"I think that's pretty ignorant thinking that coronavirus doesn't exist down here."

Mr Paynter said he has heard reports of visitors shrugging off face covers as they claim they are on holiday to "get away" from the outbreak.

Cornwall has seen "unprecedented" numbers of visitors flocking to its beaches - leaving some locals too scared to leave their homes.

The superyacht has docked in the UK as a heatwave hits this week.

Sun-seekers flocked to coastal hotspots as an 'African heatflare' prepares to blast the country.
