Perini Navi

Royal Hakvoort

Founded in 1958, Sanlorenzo builds a limited number of high quality, made to measure superyachts at its shipyard in La Spezia, Italy. Today, Sanlorenzo ranks highly among builders of Superyachts over 40m.

Tankoa Yachts

Tankoa specialises in semi-custom and custom yachts of 50-90m with Northern European quality and Italian DNA for design and flexibility.

The Italian Sea Group

TISG operates in the new-built industry with the brands Admiral (yachts over 50m) and Tecnomar (yachts up to 45m) while it works in the refitting industry with the brand NCA Refit (yachts over 60m).

Turquoise Yachts

Turquoise Yachts (formerly known as Proteksan Turquoise) is a builder of custom power and sailing superyachts, and Dr. Al Barwani, owner of Oceanco, recently became the majority shareholder.

Based in Zwartsluis, The Netherlands, Vitters has established a reputation for delivering sailing yachts of uncompromising quality and innovative design.

A luxury yacht and jet design company based in London’s Fulham. Headed up by Dickie Bannenberg, son of the great Jon Bannenberg, the studio is renowned for creative, contemporary and approachable design – both interior and exterior.

Espen Oeino

Under the leadership of the eponymous Norwegian naval architect, Espen Oeino International has been designing iconic superyacht interiors and exteriors since the 1990s. Based in Monaco the studio has worked with Burgess on several projects, most notably the 72m Trinity Yachts-built ALBATROSS and the 156m Lurssen DILBAR, the largest yacht afloat by volume.

H2 Yacht Design

Jonny Horsfield established H2 Yacht design in London in 1994. Today it is a multi-disciplined exterior and interior styling team that has earned a reputation for challenging conventions in yacht design. The studio has so far collaborated on five projects with Burgess, most recently with Heesen.

Harrison Eidsgaard

International yacht designers and architects, Harrison Eidsgaard Design is headed up by its three partners, Peder and Ewa Eidsgaard and Ben Harrison. Undertaking both exterior and interior styling, the studio’s most notable yachts to date include the award-winning TANGO and ELANDESS, the latter being the studio’s first project with Burgess.

Jonathan Quinn Barnett leads a talented team of award-winning yacht designers. Established in 1995, the studio has created original exterior yacht designs and interior architecture for discerning clients in the luxury marketplace. With a critical eye on proportion and detail, designs of distinction associated with Burgess include the interior of OCTOPUS and popular charter yacht MUCHOS MAS.

Michael Leach Design

Established in 1997 by Mick Leach with Mark Smith joining in 1999, MLD is an multi award-winning design practice specialising in marine, aviation and residential projects. With over 60 years’ industry experience collectively, having worked in various top design offices, MLD is now established as one of the industry’s leading and most successful design offices.

Reymond Langton Design

Headed up by design duo Pascale Reymond and Andrew Langton, the London-based studio was founded in 2001. The studio has since delivered 28 motor and sailing yachts, including the 134m SERENE, the largest yacht built in Italy at that time. Originally based in London, the studio’s HQ has since moved to the historic city of Bath.

Situated in the stunning surrounds of Beaulieu in the New Forest, RWD is best known for the design of superyachts such as motor yacht HASNA and sailing yacht TWIZZLE. Founded in 1993, RWD has to date completed six collaborative projects with Burgess.

Sorgiovanni Designs

Established by yacht designer Sam Sorgiovanni in 1997, the eponymous design studio is based in Perth, Australia, and undertakes both exterior and interior designs. The studio’s unique location lends a point of difference to its body of work and it has become well-known for designing superyachts with an exotic feel, as well as great attention to detail.

Terence Disdale Design

Terence Disdale Design is an award-winning design studio located in London, and responsible for the interior and exterior design of the some of the world's most significant yachts. Renowned for a ‘beach house’ style, the studio’s most notable yachts include ECLIPSE and PELORUS, and it has no fewer than 10 collaborative projects with Burgess to date.

Tim Heywood Design

A multi-award-winning exterior yacht designer, Tim Heywood Design has produced some of the largest yachts on water, including the 133m AL MIRQAB. Located in Hampshire, the eponymous yacht designer cut his teeth under the guidance of Jon Bannenberg and in the 40 years since has completed six collaborative projects with Burgess.

Winch Design

A full-service award-winning British design and architecture studio specialising in the exterior and interior styling of motor and sailing yachts, aircraft, residential and commercial properties, Winch Design was established in 1986 and has to date completed seven collaborative projects with Burgess.

The first step in delivering the yacht of your dreams is to share your vision with the Burger design team and engineering staff. Our in-depth design brief helps define your priorities for a yacht. We recommend touring the Burger shipyard where you can meet our exceptional team, learn how your yacht will be constructed and to witness the true value of Burger’s experience and craftsmanship.

After defining your vision, your dreams will begin to take shape in dramatic conceptual designs, renderings and cost estimates, presented for your direction and approval before moving forward.

Conceptual designs and renderings include:

• Hull designs
• Exterior styling and interior floor plans
• Interior elevation renderings
• Engines, propulsion and electric generation equipment selection
• Special requirements, including recreational and/or shore tenders and storage options
• Navigation electronics and entertainment system descriptions

Once you’ve approved the design, Burger will prepare a detailed design and specification breakdown with descriptions of every step in your yacht’s construction; from its development milestones to key points of approval. With a finalized and signed contract, your yacht is on the way to fruition. Each step of the build is documented before work begins, with a detailed timeline that describes each step of the process, so that you remain involved and aware of our progress, every step of the way.

Months of careful planning and construction culminate when it’s time to launch your new Burger yacht. Along with the Burger team, you and/or your captain take your new Burger yacht through various sea trials, including at-sea observations and detailed walk-through inspections. At this stage, final modifications and refinements are made.

Design Your Own Yacht

When designing your own yacht, you have a few options, from commissioning a custom new build yacht construction project through to refitting an existing yacht. When deciding which route to take, it’s helpful to know some of the pros and cons of each approach.

Option 1: The deluxe, no-holds-barred, fully custom yacht.

Experienced yacht owners and charterers often dream of one thing: the day they design their own yacht from scratch. A fully custom new build project is the pinnacle of the yacht ownership experience, as it allows you control over every aspect of your yacht’s design, from technical details like hull form and noise-dulling technology, right through to you designing that split-level master stateroom with private terrace or beach club with spa. Designing a fully custom yacht ensures that your yacht is the realization of every yachting dream, tailored perfectly to how you use your yacht. However when designing your own yacht, this luxurious bespoke option comes at a price, and the build time tends to be longer than with semi-custom models.

Option 2: The freedom and efficiency of a semi-custom yacht.

If you want to design your own yacht, and want to give your input in the design, but want to take advantage of efficiencies in build time and budget, you can opt for a semi-custom design, whereby the yacht’s hull form and design is part of an existing series of yachts. Building on a proven platform, the yacht owner gets to design the yacht’s décor, and depending on the builder, amend parts of the interior layout. The degree of freedom to change elements of the yacht will vary depending on which yacht builder you go with. A semi-custom yacht can have very different décor than other yachts in the same series, but the exterior design (and sometimes interior layout) is clearly part of a series, which will not appeal so much to yacht owners who crave a unique look to their yacht design.

Option 3: Buying ‘off the plan’ with a production yacht

This is the quickest and most cost effective way to buy a new yacht, as production yacht builders buy materials in bulk and put their yachts together quickly due to repetition of process. You can often purchase a yacht that is already under construction, meaning that time to delivery is slashed and you can take possession of your yacht much sooner than if you buy a custom yacht. This option has a lot less room for owner input on design, although some décor choices are normally left open.

Option 4: Refit an existing yacht

If you’re not in the mood to wait for several years for a brand new yacht to be delivered, refitting an existing yacht is an excellent option that can dramatically change the look of your yacht, while also providing the opportunity to update the engineering and onboard systems. A quality refit with a great design can deliver a ‘like-new’ yacht, and will normally significantly add to the resale value and charter potential of your yacht. However, major yard periods run the risk of going over time and over budget, so planning your yard period well is imperative.

How did the superyacht Bayesian sink? Experts say weather was just one factor

Divers searching for 6 missing people locate 5 bodies inside wrecked yacht's hull.

A complicated search effort is underway deep beneath the surface of the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Italy, where a superyacht sank early Monday during a fierce storm. 

Dive crews are attempting to enter the wreck of the Bayesian, a 56-metre long British-flagged luxury vessel, which is sitting in some 50 metres of water near the Sicilian fishing village of Porticello.

Fifteen of the 22 passengers and crew members on board were rescued. Divers searching for six people considered missing, including British businessman Mike Lynch, located five bodies inside the yacht's hull on Wednesday, and retrieved four of them from the water.

Searchers previously recovered the body of Recaldo Thomas, the ship's Canadian-Antiguan cook, in the water not far from where the Bayesian sank.

Questions have emerged about why a boat designed to handle severe weather sank so rapidly and whether or not some of its features could've been a factor in its demise. Maritime experts say investigations may, in time, reveal what led to the disaster.

"There needs to be an investigation as to why this happened, what went wrong and, you know, how to prevent it in the future cases," said Simon Boxall, an oceanographer and senior lecturer at the University of Southampton in England.

How did the bayesian sink so quickly.

Grainy footage from closed-circuit cameras on the shore broadcast on the website of the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper showed the Bayesian's majestic mast just before it disappeared. 

Karsten Borner, captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, which rescued the survivors who managed to get into a lifeboat, told The Associated Press he was close enough to be able to see the Bayesian as the storm came in.

"A moment later, she was gone," he said.

The survivors told the rescuers they went flat on the water "and were sunk in two minutes."

Boxall said vessels rely on being able to steer and navigate stormy seas, but the Bayesian was anchored and stationary, which likely made it more vulnerable to the storm and, potentially, a waterspout , or mini tornado that creates a whirlwind over the surface of the sea. 

He said it was also dark, meaning "you wouldn't see this sort of very unique event coming towards you."

"It's a freak of nature," Boxall said. "I think the fact that so many have survived, so far, is probably a miracle."

Tom Sharpe, a retired Royal Navy commander and defence commentator, told CBC News the weather was likely not the only issue.

He says it's rare that a weather event like this takes down a boat. 

"There's nearly always a sequence [of events]," he said in an interview from Guildford, England, explaining that everything from safety protocols to the culture on board the vessel needs to be taken into account. 

Was the boat's design part of the problem?

The Bayesian was built in 2008 by Italian luxury yacht maker Perini Navi.

Andrea Ratti, a nautical design professor at Milan Polytechnic, told Reuters that a boat the size of the Bayesian could only sink so rapidly by taking on a huge amount of water. 

He suggested that one or more portholes, windows or other openings may have been broken or smashed open by the waterspout, letting in water. There has also been media speculation that a major hatch might have been inadvertently left open.

Reports have also highlighted that the Bayesian featured a 72-metre mast — one of the tallest in the world. 

Ratti said an unusually tall mast is not by itself an element of vulnerability in a storm. 

A second expert, structural engineer Filippo Mattioni, was also skeptical about the suggestion the boat may have sunk due to a broken mast, which likely would have caused major damage smashing against the hull.

Fire department diver Marco Tilotta told the newspaper Il Messaggero that the wreck was "apparently intact," with "no gashes, no signs of impact." However, only half of the hull is visible to divers.

The Bayesian also had a retractable keel — the fin-like structure under the hull that helps stabilize boats and acts as a counterweight to the mast. 

Both Ratti and Mattioni wondered if the yacht had been anchored with the keel up, reducing the vessel's depth under water and making it less stable. Ratti said strong winds might have caused the boat to start oscillating wildly, "like a pendulum," putting exceptional strain on the mast.

Sharpe pointed out that a mast the size of the Bayesian's is designed for a massive sail, and without that sail raised and catching the wind, the gusts likely would've had a negligible impact on the aluminum pole.

He instead suggested the anchor may have played a pivotal role.

"My kind of working assumption is that she was probably a bit further in at anchor, and it's very likely, in these sort of conditions, that her anchor dragged," he said. 

In such a situation, he said, a crew is better off steering toward the anchor to stabilize the vessel or raising the anchor and heading out to sea to ride out the storm.

"They might have got caught in that middle ground where they're not on a particularly good anchorage, but the anchor is now controlling the bow of the ship."

What caused the extreme weather.

Although Sharpe says the weather is unlikely the sole cause of the sinking, he notes the Mediterranean isn't the calm sea often pictured in travel brochures. 

"It can get pretty nasty," he said.

The type of storm that struck Monday is fuelled by warm water and the Mediterranean is warmer than ever, said Boxall, noting there's been about a three and a half degree increase in the 20-year average temperature.

Climatologists say global warming is making such violent and unexpected tempests more frequent. 

Luca Mercalli, president of Italy's meteorological society, said the sea surface temperature around Sicily in the days leading up to the shipwreck was about 30 C. 

"This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms," he told Reuters.

A Russian bomb attack has killed two people in Ukraine's northeastern Sumy region.

Moscow dropped two guided bombs on civilian infrastructure, regional proescutors said in a statement.

Russia has relentlessly pummelled such border regions with strikes and bomb attacks since the invasion began.

Kyiv said its shock incursion into the Kursk region was partly aimed at cutting off Russia's ability to carry out such attacks.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently visited the region and said there had been a decrease in shelling and civilian casualities since the Kursk incursion.

Earlier this week, on 17 August, there was another missile strike in Sumy, which left burnt out husks of cars behind as firefighters had to put out the blaze.

Russia's air superiority has also proven a problem for Ukraine in the east, where Moscow makes continued creeping progress towards a number of key settlements.

Earlier today (see our 9.26 post), we reported on a Ukrainian drone attack on a Russian military facility.

The airfield was said to be, in part, used as storage for glide bombs, a cheaply produced weapon that has been particularly damaging for Ukraine.

It further shows Ukraine's desire to hit and cripple Russia's air superiority to gain an upperhand in the ongoing war.

Will the Kursk incursion affect Russia's ability to resupply its troops in Ukraine?

Military analyst Sean Bell answers:

Although Ukraine has not declared the military objectives of its incursion into Russia, it has stated that it has no intention of holding Russian territory currently occupied.

As part of its offensive in the Kursk region, Ukraine has destroyed three Russian bridges over the Seym river which would have been vital resupply routes for Russian forces in occupied territories.

However, the motive for destroying these arterial routes is probably more focused on protecting the Ukrainian forces involved in the operation, rather than disrupting Russian supply lines.

The Ukrainian attack certainly caught the Russians by surprise when it launched its audacious assault over two weeks ago.

The incursion marks the first loss of Russian territory since Operation BARBAROSSA in 1941.

However, although the Ukrainian operation appears designed to have strategic effect, it involves a relatively small area of Russian territory.

Thus Russia will have a significant number of alternative logistic supply options to maintain the huge logistical support required to sustain its forces in occupied Ukraine.

In sum, it appears unlikely that the Kursk incursion will impact adversely on Russia's ability to support its forward-deployed forces.

Ukraine has taken another step toward joining the International Criminal Court today.

Kyiv ratified the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, opening up the future possibility of more prosecutions of Russian officials for war crimes.

Ukraine's parliament voted on Wednesday to ratify the ICC statute.

Membership of the ICC is a requirement to joining the EU, which Ukraine hopes to do.

It was formally accepted as a candidate in June 2022.

The document was initially signed over two decades ago by the Ukrainian government, in 2000, but the Constitutional Court blocked ratification, saying it was unconstitutional to allow the ICC to rule on Ukraine's actions.

Many Ukrainians feared that ratifying it could allow the ICC to prosecute Ukrainian citizens who had particpated in conflict on their own territory.

To manage such concerns, the legislation contains a clause saying that Ukraine will not recognise the ICC's jurisdiction in cases where crimes may have been committed by Ukrainian nationals.

In 2023, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Vladimir Putin and Russia's presidential commissioner for children's rights Maria Lvova-Belova, over allegations of war crimes.

A Ukrainian teenager who escaped the war in his home country is celebrating "excellent" GCSE results today.

Oles Kuzomko fled Kyiv with his mother Mila and came to the UK in May 2022 while his father, Roman, remained behind to fight - but later died from sepsis.

The 16-year-old relocated to Silsden, near Bradford, and attended Bradford Grammar School (BGS).

Now, he's celebrating acheiving 10 GCSEs, including three 8s, five 7s and two 6s.

Oles also took online courses for the Ukrainian equivalent to GCSEs - all while studying in the UK.

The teen said: "I'm really proud of my physics and biology grades and I'm so grateful to BGS, especially the teachers who have helped me on an individual basis."

Simon Hinchliffe, headmaster at BGS, said: "Oles' extraordinary accomplishments are a testament to his dedication and determination to succeed against all odds.

"His journey from a war-torn country to achieving excellent results at BGS is nothing short of inspiring."

Ukraine has disputed Vladimir Putin's claims that they targeted a nuclear power plant in the Kursk region in an overnight attack.

"The enemy tried to strike at the nuclear power plant during the night," Putin claimed in a meeting with top officials.

He added: "The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been informed."

The Russian president put forward no evidence during the meeting to support his claims, as he discussed the situation in Russia's border regions.

A Ukrainian official called Mr Putin's claims "propaganda" and "a pure lie".

Andrii Kovalenko, head of Ukraine's counter-disinformation department, said: "Russia's desired scenario of Ukraine's Defense Forces attacking the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant to accuse them of nuclear terrorism fell apart, so Putin joined the propaganda.

"Everything points to the fact that Russia itself can carry out this provocation and will try to bring it to the international level."

IAEA chief Rafael Grossi has said previously he would visit the Kursk plant due to safety risks linked to the war.

The Kursk plant is one of Russia's top nuclear stations and supplies around half the electricity used in the Black Earth region of southern Russia.

Authorities in Kursk erecting concrete shelters (see our 10.11 post) are also going to put them up in Kurchatov, where the Kursk nuclear power plant is located, the region's acting governor Alexei Smirnov said.

In the call, Mr Putin also said he had ordered the creation of self-defence units in Russian border regions.

This came after the lightning 6 August incursion into Kursk took Russia by surprise and highlighted perceived frailty Moscow has in protecting its own border.

The governor of Bryansk said authorities in the region had conducted training as well for emergency evacuation from border areas in case it was needed.

Ukrainian refugees are reportedly being evicted from shelters in Hungary, according to local media.

Around 120 Ukrainian refugees, mostly of the Roma minority, were evicted from the subsidised accommodation they had been living in, in Hungary, according to Radio Free Europe.

Pictures show Roma families on the streets after an amendment to legislation was said to have changed the procedure for providing housing assistance to refugees from Ukraine.

The move comes after criticism of Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban over his closeness to Russia, and attempts to kowtow to Vladimir Putin.

Earlier this summer, Mr Orban drew strong rebukes from his fellow EU leaders who were quick to say he didn't speak for them after he travelled to Russia on what he called a "peace mission" to try and bring the war to an end.

At the time, Mr Putin received Mr Orban in the Kremlin and said the talks had been useful.

Ukraine has said it is inflicting "tangible losses" on Russia with its Kursk incursion.

In an update on the war in Ukraine, provided by the country's staff of armed forces, they outlined where the latest fighting had taken place.

They said there had been 134 recorded clashes yesterday, with Russia also launching five separate missile strikes.

Towards the end of the update, they touched on the Kursk offensive, which has changed the dynamic of the war.

"Defense Forces of Ukraine continue operations in the Kursk direction," they said, before adding: "Our soldiers are actively inflicting tangible losses in live force and equipment to the occupation forces."
