New to the market, this Catalac 10m is intended for cruising. All Catalac's were built by Tom Lack at the the Quay, Christchurch, Dorset, England. Intended to be able to handle the rough waters of the North Sea, some of these catamarans have come across the Atlantic on their own bottoms. A couple or small family will find there is plenty of room. The master cabin, located forward in the starboard hull has a double berth, large hanging locker, 2 forward facing windows, overhead hatch with screen and lots of storage. The guest cabin is forward in the port hull. It features two single berths, a bench seat, six drawers and two lockers.

The saloon area midships has a large U shaped settee that will accommodate 6-8 people. There are windows on three sides that provide plenty of light.

The boat is powered by twin Yanmar 30hp diesels with Saildrives, with 3400 hrs on each engine. Electronics include a Garmin 12" chartplotter with radar, Raymarine autopilot and a Standard Horizon VHF with AIS receiver, which is interfaced with the Garmin chartplotter.

Reverse cycle AC / Heat� 

The galley has a newer (2016) refrigerator/freezer, 4 burner stovetop and microwave.� 

A unique feature is the Nature's Head composting toilet. The original toilet is also included.� 

New batteries in January 2020- 2 house deep cycle, 2 starting.

Also included is an Avon fiberglass bottom inflatable with a 4hp Yamaha outboard.

Please note: The owner reports the starboard Saildrive is damaged.�

S/V Angel Louise is an actively cruising 1987 Catalac 12M now in Vero Beach for sale by owner. It is not a happy day for us to list our pride & joy. USSV Angel Louise is the 2nd to last Catalac 12 Meter (41 foot) Catamaran built by the Tom Lack family in England and she’s the first vessel in world history to do both the American & European Great Loops along with 2 double handed Atlantic crossings & cruising to 49 countries on shores of 5 continents. Home Port Cruz Bay and currently cruising from FL to Maine w/ stops along the way. Temporarily at New Bern, NC.

We will allow her to be bought out from under us in this 13th year of continuous cruising.

S/V Angel Louise was built for the North Sea and all the worlds oceans - the Catalac Catamaran is strong but definitely not the fastest catamaran ever built. She is not a beauty queen but will see harbors and countries of the world lighter built pricier dock queens never get to. These British built boats were built for safety when early cats had flipped in high winds. The builder is reputed to have offered £20,000 pounds sterling if anyone could get a keel out of the water - many tried but no one could do it.

Powered by two relatively new - 37hp Yanmar 3JH5e engines, with a straight shaft to her 3 bladed props. Raymarine networked electronics, AIS & Radar, and autopilot connected to both inside and outside helms. 2 separate VHFs (1 with back-up passive AIS). Has large efficient refrigeration /freezer system, 3 burner stove & oven. Large 23” LED TV with connections to stream video. HiFi Sound system to all cabins & cockpit.

Interior layout is functional - no fiberglass inside. Walk straight thru vessel - only 2 small steps to lower levels & private cabins access. Large light interior cabin.

She has a full set of sails. Both front furling & upgraded behind the mast FACNOR system for safe in cockpit sailing installed by Mack Sails. Additionally, we have supplied Angel Louise with an alternate 2nd replacement mast so she is interchangeably able to be fitted & used alternately as a Sailing Cat or as a Power Cat. (Her strong 3 cyl Yanmar diesels propel her faster than sails in most conditions). Sailing without stressing Angel Louise we regularly easily achieve 125-130 mile days sailing in the North Atlantic.

Electric head starboard and pvc connections to holding tank, with connected Raritan hold & treat type 1 MSD. 4 Large sea-worthy hatches open forward for great ventilation. Canvass covers for shade when at anchor. Equipped with 4 anchors - Spade, Bruce & 2 Fortresses plus chain.

Davron Dinghy-tow system and large AB aluminum RIB w/ 15 hp Yamaha 2 cycle OB motor are optional.

This vessel had extensively upgraded epoxy treatment years ago to protect hull from blistering. Safe high stainless rails all around vessel. Last surveyed for insurance company in 2014 and valued at $140,000 at that time. Accepted & insurance coverage by Pantaenius Insurance by us. We are willing to discount our price for new owner’s sweat equity updating with varnish & ongoing maintenance. Angel Louise is a big strong vessel that is an active cruiser, not a dock queen.

House power supplied from 8 Group 31 AGM batteries, which are maintained by 5 rail mounted solar panels and a large D-400 wind generator.

We have tried to price her fairly with a discount so she can go immediately to a new owner without delay. We are willing to talk. We continue to cruise this strong vessel. The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
• LOA: Length overall in feet
• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

Brand: Catalac 8M

The Catalac 8M is a pocket cruising catamaran which has a solid reputation for quality, strength and durability. Many of the boats found in North America today, were sailed there from Great Britain. The Catalac 8M, although classified as a pocket cruiser was designed with blue water sailing in mind. Twin diesel models can easily motor almost 1000 kilometers without refueling. The 70 amps of charging and 70 gallons of stock water tanks in the Catalac 8M and 9M make even these smaller boats terrific coastal cruisers. Constructed with solid fiberglass hulls, these are quality boats which were built like battleships.

Chuck Kanter calls them one of the catamaran brands that live on through the decades. The Catalac 8M is masthead rigged with a relatively short, but thick mast. As with all boats in the Catalac production lineup, this contributes to a stable boat with a low center of effort. No Catalac has ever been known to fly a hull under any circumstances. Dunja iii crossing – 780nm on a catalac 8m.

DUNJA III safely took us 780NM across the Mediterranean, from Leros in Greece to Malta.

We sailed (actually mostly motored), from Leros to Aegina.

Then through Corinth canal to Porto Germeno.

From there to Port Killini where we had to be towed in for rudder failure.

From Killini we crossed to Syracusa for refueling and great Sicilian food, having the last leg from there to Malta.

It was an epic trip I can tell you… Lot’s of stories of broken rudder, 54kt of wind, high swell and currents that slowed us to 3kt… But we made it in less than 2 weeks, below and behind storm Daniel which devastated the Athens region at the time.…

Catalac 8M Review and Owner Interview “S/V Chateau Cat”

In this episode, we interview Simon who owns a Catalac 8M called S/V Chateau Cat. He’s had it for two years. Simon came to catamaran sailing after growing up with a monohull, so we’re really curious about how it’s been to have a catamaran for him. What kind of experiences he’s had.

Catalac 8M / 9M Mast Lowering Instructions

The Catalac 8M and the Catalac 9M are unique in that they have a tabernacle designed to raise and lower the mast. Chainplates are mounted at the pivot point and the procedure is both simple and convenient. Read how I dropped my mast, replaced everything at the top and rewired it, all in an afternoon.  (click here)  . Note the mast support wires in the drawing below. These are necessary.

• Remove all Sails, The Boom and the Mainsheet ( rope & Blocks ). Slot your 50mm Mast Lowering Boom into the base of the mast.

Catalac 8M iPad Chart plotter

by Emile du Toit Catalac 8M 8-192 I have been looking for a way not to buy a dedicated chart plotter and finally started investigating software options for the iPad. I tried and like two of them.

1) iNavx available for iPad and iPhone has some nice features for integrating data from your instruments if that is desired. It mainly uses NOAA RNC raster United States waters marine charts. Although these are free, I dont like them much as primary source since they are not auto quilting, meaning as you move off of one, you manually have to choose the next appropriate chart.…

Bravo II: A British Built Bay Cruiser

Hak Kauffman, and bis wife Adele, bad been sailing for eight years when, in 1977, the middle-aged couple found their perfect combination of speed versus accomodation in their 27-foot Calalac cruising catamaran. They were anchored in Spa Creek this week during their annual summer cruise, and the Cherry Hill, New Jersey sailors took time to chat about their spacious little multihull, and their sailing.

Catalac 8M Diesel Engine Removal, Rebuild & Reinstall

One of my very few peeves about the Catalac 8M has to do with the inboard diesel engine placement. Apparently boat balance dictated the engine position in the boat. In actuality,  the Yanmar 1GM10s were placed so far forward in the engine compartments that the front of the engine is just 3 inches (75cm) from the rear bulkhead. The engines are almost literally mid engine mounted. Unfortunately, the Yanmar water pump, external oil lines, oil filter, thermostat ..etc..are all located on the front of the engine and are not easily accessible for normal maintenance.…

Catalac 8M upgrade Rudders and install Skegs

When I bought my 8M, it was equipped with the older style lifting steel blade rudders.The rudder blades however were in very bad condition, with considerable corrosion and rust. Also, the wood support structure had to be replaced as it was rotting away and looking at the rudder blades showed they required some TLC as well.

In some areas thickness was reduced to 50% and rust still working to get it even thinner… This meant some serious work on the rudders was required… Here’s what it was supposed to look like:

I had three options, the first being replace the wood, remove the heavily corroded areas and weld in new material or just entirely replace the steel blades with new ones, get them galvanized and throw on a few coatings of paint… The second one was to replace the whole rudder setup with the newer style Catalac skeg / rudder setup. …

I imagine that if you live in the lightning capital of the world, itS unavoidable. Sooner or later the boat will be hit by lightning. However, usually it occurs when no one is on board. I should be so lucky. In our case, we had a front row seat as we were hit by lightning on what began as a perfect sailing afternoon. Southwinds, a sailing magazine, recently featured an article on lightning strikes and boats in their June 2009 issue, and mentioned my experience in their story. …

I accepted my brother’s gracious offer to give me a hand. This page is fairly technical … but in 2005 the Catalac 8M was my new boat and calculating performance characteristics satisfied my curiousity. 

Essentially this page displays crucial data which is used to calculated max speed and stability for the Catalac 8M / 9M (same hulls). The data can be used in the context of hull design or racing handicaps. There’s no way a Catalac 8M (or most cruising catamarans for that matter) can be mistaken as a racer.

Catalac 8M/9M Rigging Tune

Sailboat Rig tuning is an art rather than a science and varies from boat to boat and from low winds to high winds. Remember that the rigging on a monohull unloads as the boat heels and spills wind out of it’s sails. When you look at Catamaran rig tuning, we have to keep in mind that our rigs never unload. We have stiffer masts because of this and larger diameter wire stays. As with all sail boats, the rigging not only holds up your mast, but also has an effect on sail shape, and therefore affects performance.Racing…
