Late Steve Job’s Super Yacht Venus

As inspiring and revolutionary Steve Jobs’ engineering concept is, equally brilliant is the late innovator’s mega yacht named Venus. Having commissioned the vessel even before the diagnosis of his terminal illness, Jobs intended the vessel to be his swan-song , after his terminal health problem was brought to light. According to the reports, the mega yacht was put into operation in 2012, a year after Jobs’ untimely demise.

The designing concept of the vessel was carried out mainly by reputed French marine architect Philippe Starck with several noteworthy inputs provided by Jobs himself. However for a brief period, the designing of the vessel was almost stalled by the American tycoon on account of the state of his health, though he later resumed it as a way of ensuring that his legacy and presence was carried forth even in his absence.

Super Yacht Venus

Feadship is known world-wide as a specialist in building one-of-a-kind super yachts.

With regard to Venus, it has provided the following technical uniqueness:

  • A stream-lined aluminium hull that replicates the visual effect of the Apple gadgetries
  • State-of-the-art technological inclusions like incorporation of iMac systems to allow for superior manoeuvring on water
  • Ultra-modern accommodation amenities

Steve Job's Super Yacht

Controversy about Payment

Almost immediately after the mega yacht was launched, there was a slight controversy surrounding the Venus. Principle designer Philippe Starck alleged that the legal inheritors of the yacht had failed to pay the balance of his dues, amounting to around US$ four million. Following the allegation, the yacht was seized at the Rotterdam harbor before the defaulted dues were paid and settled by the late entrepreneur’s legal team on behalf of the inheritors.

Steve Job's Yacht

The mega yacht was named for the Greco-Roman Goddess of romance, Venus and it was with great love that Steve Jobs envisioned its completion. Although unfortunately he was unable to see his vision brought to life, yacht Venus holds one lasting memory of Jobs to his loved and cherished ones.

VENUS Yacht – Captivating $120M Superyacht

The VENUS yacht was delivered in 2012 by Feadship, a Dutch shipbuilding company.

Phillippe Stark designed the VENUS, and Jobs was an integral part of the yacht’s design. The 78m yacht has garnered a lot of attention thanks to the famous name who commissioned it, but there are not many details about the boat’s interior available.

VENUS yacht interior

The interior design of the VENUS yacht was largely designed by Steve Jobs, in combination with Philippe Starck .

The yacht’s interior has never been published, and the details available are in short supply. There is a lot of intrigue as to what the yacht’s interior looks like, thanks to the famous name who commissioned it.

One can only imagine that the interior reflects Apple’s slogan “Think Different,” with an eye-catching and minimalist interior to reflect the design of the yacht’s exterior.

It is known that the bridge is lined with 27-inch Mac computer screens, with large cabin windows that are almost floor to ceiling, with a main living area. There is accommodation for 12 guests in 6 suites and 22 crew.

The VENUS yacht has a unique exterior, reflecting the sleekness and eye-catching nature of Apple’s products, and was designed by Philippe Starck.

Feadship was commissioned to execute the build. Everything about the exterior is eye-catching and unique, from the silver paint job to the stainless steel details to the line of rectangular windows that run from the bow.

The structure of VENUS features 90-degree angles, an axe bow for piercing waves, and a flat and somewhat unusually squared stern that opens to reveal a tender garage.

There is no visible radar arch or satellite equipment, as all the equipment is hidden within a box that keeps the VENUS exterior appearance clean and sleek.

Specifications

The 78m VENUS yacht has an 11.8m beam and a 3.1m draft that makes the boat appear low-slung in the water.

The 2 MTU engines give VENUS a top speed of 20.5kn and a cruising speed of 18kn. She displaces 1,876 GT and can cover 5500 nautical miles.

She has an annual running cost of $10-$15 million and was rumored to cost $100 million to build. VENUS was refitted in 2015 at Monaco Marine.

Update: Steve Jobs’ “unmanned” yacht collides with Lady Moura

In an official update provided to superyachtnews, it appears venus’ bridge was unmanned at the time of a minor collision that has sparked debate online….

yacht venus steve jobs

An eyebrow-raising incident occurred off the coast of Naples, Italy, on 22 July 2024, involving a collision between Venus , owned by the widow of Steve Jobs, Laurene Powell Jobs, and Lady Moura , owned by Mexican billionaire Ricardo Salinas Pliego.

In a statement provided to SuperyachtNews by Grupo Salinas, it appears that the bridge of Venus was unmanned at the time of the collision.

“ Lady Moura was anchored in the Bay of Naples at a depth of 40 metres, deploying 7 shackles of chain, which meets the minimum requirements for safe anchoring under the given conditions,” the spokesperson explained.

“This was calculated in accordance with the standards of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS). The length in metres was determined using a coefficient of hold of 5, or per the Admiralty method, which calculates the number of shackles as the square root of the water depth in metres, multiplied by 1.5.

“Several hours later, Venus arrived at the anchorage and seemingly misjudged the length of the chain deployed by Lady Moura. A sudden and violent squall with winds of 50-55 knots from an unexpected direction—different from the prevailing forecasts—led to the impact between the vessels.”

However, despite numerous efforts by the crew of Lady Moura to alert the crew of Venus by blowing the whistle and hailing on the radio, “it appears that the bridge of Venus was unmanned”. Notably, neither vessel dragged anchor during the event.

“Thankfully, the damages to both yachts were minimal and cosmetic. Within hours, both parties resolved the situation amicably and professionally. Grupo Salinas appreciates the professionalism demonstrated by all involved and the swift resolution to ensure the safety and integrity of the vessels and their crews.”

Footage from the crash, posted on 7 August, has since sparked considerable debate online.

The video, shared by Pliego on X, formerly known as Twitter, shows the 78-metre Feadship drifting towards Pliego’s yacht before making contact with the 105-metre Blohm+Voss yacht, despite cries from the crew. Both vessels were anchored in the bay at the time.

“You won’t believe this, but our yacht was hit while we were in Naples,” said Pliego in a tweet.

“Steve Jobs’ yacht, founder of Apple (now owned by his wife Laurene), hit us while we were anchored off Naples. I’d like to know what the captain and crew were doing that they didn’t see a yacht the size of mine in front of them.”

Pliego added that the collision ultimately resulted in nothing more than a scratch; however, it will need substantial funds to repair it. The billionaire then jokingly suggested to his followers to “go and buy Apple products to help them pay”.

Whilst the spokesperson has since noted that the crash was due to a change in wind, the competency of the crew has come under fire, with many questioning how this incident was possible in the first place.

“The crew on the yacht Venu s were twiddling their thumbs; there’s no way they couldn’t see the Lady Moura ,” says Fabian Alonso (@fabianla69) on X.

“It’s incredible that no crew member came out to place a fender anywhere; it seems like a ship adrift,” adds cafas (@cafascafas).

Despite the incident, the yachts have since cruised elsewhere, with Lady Moura now in Mykonos, Greece, and Venus sailing in the Ligurian Sea.

“Here is the video, so you can see that there is no shortage of idiots in the world and understand how important it is to have a responsible and attentive captain in command,” adds Pliego. “There’s no other way, we’re going to continue enjoying our holidays.”

steve jobs' venus yacht is unveiled

steve jobs’ venus yacht design

‘venus’, the yacht that was being designed by steve jobs up until his death a little over a year ago, has made its first appearance as a finished product in the city of aalsmeer in the netherlands. reportedly a collaborative effort between jobs and philippe starck , the ship measures about 230 to 260 feet long, made entirely of aluminum. maintaining his ‘clutterfree’ philosophy, the interior cabin is equipped with a set-up of seven 27-inch iMacs for its control room.

as described in an excerpt from walter isaacson’s steve jobs biography:

‘as at an apple store, the cabin windows were large panes, almost floor to ceiling, and the main living area was designed to have walls of glass that were forty feet long and ten feet high. he had gotten the chief engineer of the apple stores to design a special glass that was able to provide structural support. by then the boat was under construction by the dutch custom yacht builders feadship , but jobs was still fiddling with the design.”

‘I know that it’s possible I will die and leave laurene with a half-built boat,’ he said. ‘but I have to keep going on it. if I don’t, it’s an admission that I’m about to die.”

Steve Jobs’ Feadship Yacht “Venus” is en route to the United States

News has come that Steve Jobs’ yacht, “Venus,” has set sail en route to her new home in the United States. She is currently located in the main port of Tenerife, off of Morocco in the Canary Islands, and one can only assume that she is preparing to venture across the Atlantic ocean. Although all Feadship yachts are impressive, this yacht has a unique profile that makes yachting enthusiasts take a second look. At 230, and with lots of windows nestled into the crisp profile, this yacht lives up to the modern influence that the owner’s company has cast into the world. The “glass helm” has a stunning layout and all systems can be monitored, controlled, and displayed through the seven iMac displays in the helm. Aside from the screens you will find a throttle, rudder control, and a few other simple controls (like a mouse for the computers) but this proves to be one of the cleanest helm layouts that I’ve ever seen. Cleverly,  above the helm deck, the navigation equipment has been covertly concealed behind walls which make the yacht have a consistent style from the water line all the way to the very top.

Aside from all the publicity circulating around “Venus,” Feadship also received a lot of praise in 2012 in regard to the 287′ Feadship “Musashi.”  “Musashi” is the winner of the Neptune prize at the ShowBoats design awards. She was also named Best Custom Built Yacht at the Asia Boating Awards as well as received the World Yacht Trophy in Cannes.

Your Insider’s Look at Steve Jobs’ Yacht Venus

Ian Fortey

The Venus Yacht was built for Steve Jobs, or it almost was. Though Jobs commissioned the yacht, it was launched in 2012, a year after Jobs passed away. He never got to see the finished product. It’s been said that he actually spent the last several years before his death helping to custom design the Venus as his intent was to use it to sail the world with his family.

Venus was designed by a company called Ubik, owned by designer Phillipe Starck. Starck  handled both the interior design and the exterior design. The build was undertaken by renowned shipyard Feadship out of the Netherlands.

The yacht is a little lighter than some of her size thanks to the fact she doesn’t have a steel hull like many superyachts do. Instead, she features both an aluminum hull and an aluminum superstructure. She also features teak decks.

The exterior design features many straight lines and right angles. The stern is squared and it features an axe bow. There’s also very little to see on deck even from above. Unlike most yachts , there is no visible radar arch or satellite equipment because it’s obscured within a box structure to maintain that simple design look.

Who Owns the Venus Yacht?

yacht venus steve jobs

As a result of the death of Steve Jobs the yacht became part of his estate which belongs to his widow Laurene Powell Jobs. She has maintained ownership of the yacht since it was finished in 2012. There was a brief time when the yacht was impounded after its construction. This was caused by a dispute over payment. Phillipe Starck claimed that the fee for his work was never paid in full. He was said to have designed the yacht for about $9 million and $3 million was still owing. After 10 days, Jobs’ estate settled the account and the yacht was delivered.

How Big is the Yacht Venus?

yacht venus steve jobs

The Venus measures in at a respectable 257 feet in length. So clearly she qualifies as a superyacht, even if she doesn’t quite measure up to Jeff Bezos’ 417-foot megayacht Koru . The Venus also has a beam of about 38 feet and her volume comes in at 1,876 GT which is actually a little on the light side for such a large yacht, in part due to the aluminum construction.

How Much Did the Venus Yacht Cost?

Steve Jobs commissioned the yacht for an impressive $120 million. Yachts like the Eclipse are alleged to be upwards of $1.5 billion and even the massive Azzam has been confirmed at around $600 million so obviously the Venus is not the most expensive vessel, but it’s nothing to sniff at, either.

We know from what we mentioned above that $9 million of that alone went to the designer of the yacht. Like many yachts of this size there is also a considerable cost related to the yearly operations of the vessel. Things like crew salaries, taxes and fuel costs are considerable. In light of that, it’s been estimated that it costs between $10 million and $20 million just to keep the boat on the water for a year. That may seem steep but it’s definitely normal for most yachts.

Is the Venus Yacht Available for Charter?

yacht venus steve jobs

Jobs was a notoriously private man in many ways and his family remains the same, at least insofar as this yacht is concerned. It’s never been made available for charter and, in fact, very little is known about it.

How Fast is the Venus Yacht and What Engines Does It Use?

The Venus makes use of a pair of twin diesel MTU (16V 4000 M73) 16-cylinder engines. Together they produce  3,433 horsepower. This allows her to cruise at speeds of 16 knots. She can also reach a maximum speed of 22 knots which is fairly substantial for a yacht of her size.

What’s the Interior of the Venus Yacht Like?

yacht venus steve jobs

As you can tell from the unique hull design, there is a minimalist aesthetic to the yacht. It does resemble some Apple products from the time period in its way. Towards the after of the vessel on the starboard side there’s a launch bay for tenders that can be deployed by crane and apparently the design included a wheelhouse powered by seven 27″ iMacs.

The aft of the vessel opens to a large beach club for guests to enjoy the ocean and the sun, features a swim platform and lounge area.

The yacht has the capacity to accommodate 12 guests across 6 cabins. There is also room for a crew of 22 to maintain the vessel. The design is simple and clean all over. Glass, silver and white with everything polished is what you see all over the vessel.

Features and Amenities

The features of the Venus are actually totally unknown to this day. Jobs has never invited photographers on board to get a glimpse of what the cabins or living spaces may look like so there’s no word on how it all came together. Likewise, the designer has not shared any of the blueprints or ideas that went into making the yacht. This is common among designers of superyachts, however, and many have to sign non-disclosure agreements so they couldn’t share details even if they wanted to.

Until such time as Laurene Jobs opts to either open the yacht to the public or sell it, the interior details are going to remain a mystery beyond what observers are able to glimpse from afar.

The Bottom Line

The Venus was a yacht partially designed and commissioned by Steve Jobs before his death in 2011. The yacht was finished in 2012 so he never got to see the final product on the water. Jobs once admitted he knew he might die before the yacht was finished but didn’t want to stop his work because he felt like it was an admission that he was going to die and didn’t want to quit like that.

The yacht is very uniquely designed in a minimalist style which reminds many of how Apple products in general are designed. The yacht cost Jobs about $120 million. It measures in at 257 feet in length.

Laurene Jobs is the current owner of the yacht and she has maintained her privacy with the vessel. As such, not only is it not available for charter but no one has seen images of the inside either.

More photos of Steve Jobs' yacht Venus

The 78m yacht Venus , built for the late founder of Apple Steve Jobs, was photographed on Thursday at Feadship’s De Vries yard in Aalsmeer, Holland.

After a private party with the workers and the current owner inside the drydock on 27 October, the yacht was Christened on 28 October, when she floated out of the building hall for completing.

Venus was engineered by De Voogt Naval Architects and features styling by Philippe Starck. Construction began in 2009 and the false top deck hiding her communication and television receivers is noted in the new book by Boat International Media, Megayachts 2013.

When Steve Jobs passed away in October 2011, most of his assets passed on to his wife, making her one of the 50 richest people in the world.

Laurene Powell Jobs, 52, married the tech mogul in 1991 - ten years before the release of the first iPod - and now manages a $16.7bn fortune according to Forbes .

She owns, among other things, two private jets, four real estate properties and shares of the Walt Disney Company and Apple, Business Insider reported.

Powell Jobs is now the sixth richest woman in the world based on Forbes' ranking, behind French L'Oreal shareholder Liliane Bettencourt, Wal-Mart heiress Alice Walton, Mars heiress Jacqueline Mars, Italian Michele Ferrero's widow Maria Franca Fissolo and German BMW heiress Susanne Klatten.

Her fortune comes mainly from the Walt Disney Company shares she inherited from her husband, according to Business Insider.

Those shares were worth $7.4 billion when he sold Pixar, his animation studio, to Disney in 2006. It has now increased to $12.7 billion, Business Insider reported.

The Laurene Powell Jobs Trust, which Jobs has managed since the death of her husband, is the largest individual shareholder at the Walt Disney Company, with a 7.8 per cent stake according to Forbes.

Powell Jobs' share of Apple, on the other hand, is tiny compared to what it could have been: according to Business Insider, her stake at the company comes to $560 million.

That's not even one per cent of the $65 billion his original 11 per cent stake at the company would represent today, the website wrote.

But he sold it when Apple ousted him in 1985.

Powell-Jobs also owns two private jets - a 2013 Gulfstream G650, currently priced at $58,8 million, and a 1999 Gulfstream G-V, now worth $9.95 million.

The rest of her fortune is divided between cash and liquid assets according to Business Insider, and comes from stock transactions, dividends and investments, as well as previous salaries and bonuses.

Powell-Jobs, who met her husband in 1989 when he came to give a lecture at Stanford Business School, where she was a student, had three children with him.

She has co-founded several programs to assist disadvantaged students.
