Emirates Team New Zealand sail their AC 37 race boat Taihoro in Barcelona

As the sun-drenched Mediterranean mecca prepares to host one of the world’s greatest sporting events, here’s everything you need to know about where to watch the races, how to catch a glimpse of the teams, as well as where to eat and sleep, during the 2024 America’s Cup in Barcelona.

The America’s Cup In Barcelona

The America’s Cup is not only the most prestigious yachting event in the world, it is also the oldest active international sporting trophy in existence, first contested in a race around Britain’s Isle of Wight back in 1851. This year, the action will be based around Barcelona’s Port Vell, the postcard-perfect old port on the edge of the Gothic Quarter, steps away from the lower end of Las Ramblas, and within easy strolling distance of most of downtown Barcelona. It is here that the general public will be able to experience the thrill of the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup Barcelona first hand.

The Race Village

The official race village will be located along Moll de la Fusta, inviting everyone to get up close and personal with the boats, the teams and the event itself through a slew of activations, live screens and stages. Access to the race village will be free, although a capacity control system will be in place to prevent overcrowding. While there is no direct view of the water from this space, jumbo-sized viewing screens will allow spectators to keep up to date with the action. Don’t miss an opportunity to take a stroll around Port Vell in the early morning or evening as the boats dock-in and the bases become a hive of activity.

While the six America’s Cup teams will be based in the Port Vell area, the UniCredit Youth & Puig Women’s teams can be found further down the beach in the Port Olímpic. With the racecourse located just outside the port entrance breakwaters, the beaches of St Miguel, Barceloneta and Somorrostro will allow you to catch a glimpse of the action with your own eyes.

The America's Cup Fanzones, located in Plaça del Mar by Barceloneta beach and on Bogatell beach, will offer a unique vantage point from which to see the race area, while giant screens will deliver close-up views of all the on-water action. The Fanzones are free to access with no tickets required.

The closest you can get to the racing action is out on the water and, if you do not have access to a boat, you can still charter one. Sail & Charter is the Official Charter Boat Partner of the America’s Cup, with a wide range of experiences on offer.

Hotel Arts is Barcelona's most luxurious beachfront stay.

Where To Stay

It may come as a surprise that a city so famous for its beaches is not brimming with waterfront accommodation options. In fact, only a handful of Barcelona hotels offer unobstructed views of the Mediterranean.

Hotel Arts is Barcelona’s most luxurious beachfront stay . Spacious, and elegant, most of its rooms boast fantastic views of the city and the Med—none more so than the 1,600 to 4,300 square-foot serviced penthouse suites at the top of the building with their panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows.

This year, Hotel Arts is converting its Arts 41 meeting and events space into the place to witness the raw power and tactical prowess of the races, thanks to its unparalleled views of the regatta course. Accessible via a special America’s Cup package , Arts 41 Lounge will provide the ideal setting to enjoy the ambiance of the America’s Cup and celebrate in style, with an all-day culinary offering, including cocktails and premium drinks.

One of Barcelona's top seafood restaurants, Azul, will be offering front-row views of the races.

Where To Eat

Barcelona is a food lover’s paradise with more fantastic restaurants than you or I have had hot dinners (check out the list of this year’s hottest restaurants in Barcelona here ). Few experiences are more quintessentially Barcelona than a waterfront paella lunch and, this year, the front row tables at top beachside eateries, like Pez Vela or Can Fisher , will be more in demand than ever.

To skip the crowds and switch things up, don’t miss Azul Rooftop Restaurant by Michelin-starred French chef Romain Fornell, which is not only one of the city’s most elegant seafood restaurants, it also has panoramic sea views to die for. Azul is always worth a visit, but, this year, its rooftop location will offer a vantage point like none other from the elevated terrace overlooking the beach at Barceloneta. Add Chef Fornell’s star dishes of Mediterranean red tuna tartare or the mouthwatering squid and clam paella, and you will see why a race-day lunch at Azul promises to be nothing short of show stopping.

Getting around

Barcelona is a walkable city and anyone arriving at the race area on foot, by bicycle or public transport will be guaranteed access. The same goes for people arriving by taxi or with a private driver. Meanwhile, driving is not advised as access for private vehicles may be restricted at certain times, according to the flow of spectators. Traffic restrictions in the surrounding area may also be in place.

All event areas will be reachable by public transport and services will be increased on competition days. The closest metro stations to the race area are Barceloneta, Ciutadella-Vila Olímpica, Bogatell and Llacuna on line L4; Drassanes on line L3, and Marina on line L1.

Most races will be held on Wednesdays, Fridays and at weekends, although the schedule may be modified subject to weather conditions.

Between August 22 and the end of October, 2024 , Barcelona will host the 37th edition of the America’s Cup , the oldest sporting competition in history and the most important one in the world of sailing.

With this spectacular regatta, Barcelona will become the first city in the world to host the three global sporting events with the most audience: the Olympics , the football World Cup and the America’s Cup .

The participating teams are based in Port Vell , where several areas for watching the regattas will be set up, in addition to the Race Village on Moll de la Fusta quay , which can be entered free of charge, and the new Port Olímpic , which is opening this summer after an in-depth transformation.

State-of-the-art vessels equipped with hydrofoils will fly over the waters of Barcelona’s beaches at almost 100 km/hour in an attempt to come in first in a race with only one winner.

Six teams will compete in the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup Barcelona to take home the legendary silver cup: :

  • Emirates Team New Zealand (New Zealand), the team that won the last edition and has the trophy in its possession.
  • INEOS Britannia (United Kingdom), the team that is going to challenge the winners.
  • Alingui Red Bull Racing (Switzerland)
  • Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team (Italy)
  • New York Yacht Club American Magic (United States) Orient Express Racing Team (France)

The release of key dates adds to the excitement as the sailing community eagerly awaits the commencement of the 37th America’s Cup in Barcelona, promising a series of exhilarating races and intense competition.

The key dates for the Louis Vuitton 37 th  America’s Cup are as follows:

yacht race barcelona

  • Preliminary Regatta: 22 nd – 25 th August
  • Louis Vuitton Cup Round Robins: 29 th August- 8 th  September
  • Louis Vuitton Cup Semi Finals: 14 th – 19 th  September
  • Louis Vuitton Cup Finals: 26 th September- 5 th  October
  • Louis Vuitton 37 th  America’s Cup Match: 12 th October- 21 st  October

It will be an intense 3-month racing period for the America’s Cup teams whilst for the Youth & Women’s teams, their separate events will be preceded by long days of official training before their racing begins in earnest.

All six America’s Cup teams will contest the Preliminary Regatta 22nd – 25 th  August and this will be the first time the new AC75’s will line up to provide some vital performance insight between the teams.

Just four days later, as written in the Protocol governing the 37 th  America’s Cup, the Louis Vuitton Cup will begin with two Round Robins which begin on the 29 th  of August 2024, with all six competing teams racing, including the Defender. The double Round Robin racing is scheduled to finish on the 8 th  of September and will be the last time the Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand, will race the against the Challengers before the Louis Vuitton 37 th  America’s Cup Match.

yacht race barcelona

However, importantly, according to the Protocol the results from all races during the Round Robin stage between a Challenger and the Defender will not count towards the semi-final rankings. Which means, the top four Challengers will advance through to the Louis Vuitton Semi Finals stage, while the first challenging team is eliminated.

The top qualifier will select their semi-final opponent and in each half of the semi-final draw it’s a first-to-five, best of nine race format.

There can be no room for error from the Challengers, no off days. The schedule rewards consistency and the opportunity to select your opponent after finishing top at the series conclusion of the second Round Robin is immense.

yacht race barcelona

The Louis Vuitton Cup Final will see the winning semi-finalists battle it out for the right to face Emirates Team New Zealand in the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup Match after a best-of-thirteen (first to seven) series.

The format for the Louis Vuitton 37 th  America’s Cup Match itself is also a best-of-thirteen races (first to seven) with an expected conclusion by the 21 st  October 2024. (Reserve days are scheduled for the 22 nd  October through to 27 th  October if required.)

Grant Dalton, CEO of Emirates Team New Zealand and America’s Cup Events (ACE) gave his perspective on the format saying: “This is almost certainly the highest Challenger standard seen in the America’s Cup in the past 25 years and the winner will be battle-hardened having come through the white-hot intensity of the Louis Vuitton Cup. For Emirates Team New Zealand, we will have seen the competitiveness early in the Round Robin stage, but it will be a very different and interesting challenge for us to overcome when it comes to the Louis Vuitton 37 th  America’s Cup Match. It’s going to be a classic Cup contest.”

——————————————

Running alongside the 37 th  America’s Cup schedule, America’s Cup Events (ACE) can also announce the scheduling for both the Youth and Puig Women’s America’s Cup regattas. The key dates are as follows:

  • Youth America’s Cup: 17 th – 26 th September
  • Puig Women’s America’s Cup: 5 th – 13 th October

The racing and training schedule for each event runs along the same format with Official Practice preceding the race days before the fleet in each respective regatta is split into two groups of six boats for an eight race opening series. The fleet cut will follow with the top six teams advancing to a four-race fleet-race to decide the top two boats in each series.

yacht race barcelona

The Youth America’s Cup final – a one race, winner-takes-all shoot out is scheduled to take place between Races 1 and Race 2 of the Louis Vuitton Cup Final on the 26 th  September 2024. The Final of the Puig Women’s America’s Cup is initially scheduled to be held in between Race 3 and Race 4 of the Louis Vuitton 37 th  America’s Cup Match on the 13 th  October 2024.

Speaking about the scheduling of both finals, Grant Dalton added: “This is maximum global exposure for our Youth & Women’s finalists. It will be a very tough regatta to win where the full range of racing disciplines will be tested to the max. The winners in each event will be catapulted onto the world stage and for sure, we will see future legends of the America’s Cup coming to the fore. It’s an exciting but demanding format that’s been designed to test the athletes to the maximum.”

America's Cup Barcelona 2024

  • The Louis Vuitton 37th America's Cup will be held in Barcelona in 2024 and has already begun to transform the facade of the Port Vell. The event will have a great economic impact, as well as a huge diffusion of the Barcelona brand, Catalonia and the Port.
  • But, above all, it will leave the city and the Port with a cutting-edge "blue" legacy that combines technology and sustainability.

What is the America's Cup?

First the Olympic Games. Then a World Cup. And the third global sporting event with the greatest impact is the America's Cup. And in 2024 it will be in Barcelona.

The opening event of the Louis Vuitton 37th America's Cup will be held on August 22, 2024 . It will be followed by the final preliminary race and the Louis Vuitton Cup, leading up to the Louis Vuitton America's Cup, which will start on October 12, 2024. Since June 2023, all the teams have been based in Barcelona and are training on the waters that will host the event.

The current defender of the America's Cup is Emirates Team New Zealand which, as the current holder of the Cup, is in charge of choosing the venue and organizing the Louis Vuitton 37th America's Cup.

The challenger teams are the british Ineos Britannia , the swiss Alinghi Red Bull Racing , the italian Luna Rossa Pirelli Prada Team , the american NYYC American Magic and the french Orient Express Racing Team .

A sustainable America's Cup

Innovation drive.

The America's Cup includes all the previous stages of research and development; a development that will bring exportable innovations to traditional yachting, allowing its technological advancement.

Hydrogen project

One of the technological impacts of the Louis Vuitton 37th America's Cup is directly related to Chase Zero, the competition's hydrogen-powered auxiliary boat. The Port of Barcelona set up a hydrogen supply point at the moll de les Drassanes - moll de Barcelona to service it. The installation was the first step on the road to boosting e-sports sailing and servicing sailboats using this alternative fuel.

The planned installation consisted of the following elements:

  • Hydrogen storage platform: semi-trailer vehicle with pressurized cylinders (200 bar) for hydrogen storage. The total storage volume is 27,000 liters.
  • Hydrogen supplier: consisting of a hydrogen dispenser with hose and integrated control system.

During the Louis Vuitton 37th America's Cup, a hydrogen supply point will again be installed to serve 10 boats (one for each team, plus four for the organization).

The Port of Barcelona is already actively participating in several initiatives to promote the use of hydrogen as a green fuel. At the global level, it forms part of two working groups of the World Ports Climate Action Program on Onshore Power Supply (OPS) and new zero-emission propulsion fuels.

At the state level, it is a member of the Iniciativa Tecnológica Prioritaria the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and, lastly, it participates in the Taula de l’Hidrogen de Catalunya together with more than 150 companies and organizations.

yacht race barcelona

The America’s Cup of sailing is  the most important regatta in the world  that brings together history, fame, fortune, international rivalry and technology, giving rise to one of the greatest sporting events of today.

We are lucky that the next  America’s Cup in 2024 will be in Barcelona , so we will be able to experience the show from the front row.

Do you want to know how the regatta works, what types of boats are used and some other curiosity about the event?

History of the America’s Cup

In 1851 a regatta around the Isle of Wight called the  Queen’s Cup was to be held.

yacht race barcelona

Fourteen ships of the Royal  London  Yacht Squadron  were engaged against the revolutionary American schooner  America .

The trophy,  a silver jug valued at 100 guineas.

The American sailboat defeated the English in a tough regatta, taking the trophy to the other side of the Atlantic.

The legend of America’s Cup  had begun.

The New York Yacht Club, more than 100 years of victories

On his return to the US,  the prize was donated  by the owner of the schooner América to the New York Yacht Club, with the promise that the latter would use it to promote international sailing competition.

That is why the regatta was renamed  America’s Cup.

yacht race barcelona

The schooner America |  Source: www.americascup.com

Since then and for  more than a century,  the New York club accepted challenges from clubs from all over the world without anyone being able to snatch the title in a regatta.

This was the case until 1983, when the  Australia II , of the Royal Yacht Club of Perth (Australia), managed to put an end to the hegemony.

Currently, clubs from only 4 countries have owned America’s Cup : the United States, Australia, New Zealand and Switzerland.

America’s Cup event format

The  magic and myth that surrounds this regatta also have to do with the way in which it is organized.

Although it is a state-of-the-art sailing competition (the Formula 1 of sailing), it has not lost its  true essence with a flavor of the upper class of the 19th century .

Simplifying a lot, America’s Cup is a 1-on-1 regatta  where the club that owns the cup defends it against the club that challenges it.

But before going into details about the regatta, let’s understand its origin.

Deed of Gift

The Deed of Gift is a document that  contains the main rules of America’s Cup.

It is as if it were the “constitution” of the regatta.

When America’s Cup was donated to the New York Yacht Club in 1857, it carried with it a sheet of paper written by George L. Schuyler defining the main purpose of the trophy .

Its first caption read thus:

To prevent Canadian clubs that sailed on lakes from participating or  challengers  with boats much larger than the defender’s from showing up,  the Deed of Gift has undergone modifications  over the years.

The third version of the Deed of Gift is currently in force and is from the year 1985.

One of the rules that make this regatta unique  is the one that allows both the defender and the challenger to establish, by mutual agreement, aspects such as the date, times, rules, regulations and, in short,  any condition for the regatta .

Hence, since the  Deed of Gift  is not detailed enough,  the America’s Cup rules are specified in a document called the Protocol.

This document is drawn up by the defender but  the rules are mutually agreed  between the defender and the main challenger.

The “Protocol”

It is the document that  establishes the rules for America’s Cup to be held in Barcelona in 2024 (edition number 37) and is published on the official website of  America’s Cup .

👉  You can see the AC37 Protocol here

The document  is signed by two clubs  :

  • The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron Incorporated (“RNZYS”), from New Zealand, winner of last America’s Cup.
  • And the English Royal Yacht Squadron Limited (“RYS”), who in March 2021 submitted (and was accepted) its candidacy as the first challenger to the RNZYS

Therefore, the 2024 America’s Cup is organized between RNZYS (New Zealand) and RYS (England).

However, the specifications establish that  more challenging clubs will be accepted , as long as they meet some conditions. Among other:

  • Organize at least one annual regatta in the open sea.
  • Be at least 3 years old.
  • Have at least 200 members.

The defender always  has the power not to accept the candidacy of a challenger , but always having to consult with the main  challenger .

For their part, the non-refundable  participation fees established by the  Protocol  are as follows:

– 1,000,000 US dollars within 7 days after being accepted as a  challenger

– 1,250,000 US dollars before September 1, 2022

As we can see, the adjectives of fame, history, fortune, international rivalry and technology that we use in the introduction to this post are more than justified in  a regatta of traditions and extravagant conditions .

Hence, in terms of audiences and economic impact, it is comparable to sporting events of the level of the World Cup or the Olympics.

Regatta of America’s Cup Barcelona 2024

Having analyzed the origins and main rules of a regatta as curious as this one, we are going to see in this section  the details of the America’s Cup that will be held in Barcelona  in 2024.

The  format of the competition  that has been agreed between the New Zealand and English teams are as follows:

CHALLENGER SELECTION SERIES: – SEPTEMBER 2024

This is a first-round where the club that will challenge the defender in the final regatta , Emirates Team New Zealand, will be chosen in the final regatta of America’s Cup.

It is a Round Robin format league.

This means that Challenger  hopefuls (challengers) compete  against each other in 1 vs 1 regattas . The two teams with the best score will meet in a final regatta in which the winner will play the America’s Cup against Emirates Team New Zealand.

FINAL REGATTA OF THE America’s Cup IN BARCELONA – OCTOBER 2024

There is no second place in America’s Cup (you’ll find out why at the end of the article), so there can only be one winner.

The best team from the  Challenger Selection Series  meets the defender in a best-of-13 regatta final.

The victories are worth 1 point, so  the first team to win 7 regattas  will take the silver jug and will be in charge of organizing the next America’s Cup.

Format of a regatta

A video from the last edition  explains in a graphic and easy-to-understand  way how an America’s Cup regatta works:

The race course is  3.5 kilometers long and 1.5 kilometers wide .

The doors are oriented so that  one is to leeward and the other to windward . Between the two is the line that serves as both a start and a finish line.

The number of lengths to be completed in each regatta is determined by the jury based on the weather conditions at the time.

After the countdown to the start, the boats  sail first against the wind , to tack at the windward buoys and return, with the wind in favor, to the leeward buoys.

The first boat to cross the starting line after completing the lengths stipulated by the jury  wins the regatta .

America’s Cup Boats in Barcelona – AC75 Class

The Protocol defines, of course,  what type of boat must be used  in the regatta.

For America’s Cup 2024 Barcelona, it is established that the sailboat to be used will be the AC75 model , a high-performance monohull with foils.

Specifically,  it is the second evolution of this model , since small changes have been made to the model that was designed for the 36th edition.

The  AC75 Class Rule  is the official document that specifies the technical characteristics of the monocoque that all teams must comply with.

And it is that nothing is taken for granted; This is what section 1.4 of the introduction says:

👉  You can see the AC75 Class Rule here

The ailerons that go underwater and allow these sailboats to get up out of the water and “fly” are called foils.

This means that they have  much less friction with the water  and thus reach much higher speeds compared to normal sailboats, as we will see later.

We detail below the most representative  technical characteristics  of this model.

Technical characteristics – AC75

  • Mast height: 26.5 meters
  • Crew: 8 people
  • Weight: 6.5 tons
  • Max speed: +50 knots
  • Length: 20.7 meters
  • Largest: 145 m  2
  • Jib: 90 m  2

The AC75 Class Rule is an  extremely difficult document to understand  due to its technicalities and details.

However, it clearly defines the characteristic features that the AC75 must have and that gives a clear idea of the type of boat in question:

In addition to these, the standard allows the use of any other element or component, as long as it is not specifically prohibited by the standard itself.

The AC75 can sail at  a speed up to 4 times faster than the wind itself  blowing.

Thus, with average speeds of between 12 and 15 knots that we usually have in Barcelona, it is expected that the monohulls will touch  maximum speeds of 50 knots  during the regatta.

Novelty America’s Cup Barcelona: Women’s and youth category

The America’s Cup Barcelona 2024  is presented with news .

It will be the first edition in which there will be  two new categories: Women’s and youth .

They will compete in the  AC40 , which is the little sister of the AC75, but  not slower for that .

With top speeds of  more than 45 knots , the AC40s have even more restricted regulations.

All the teams compete using exactly the same boat . The goal: put aside budget differences and find young promises for future America’s Cups.

The AC40 is aesthetically very similar to the AC75  but somewhat smaller. With a length of 11.3 meters, a mast of 18 meters and only 4 crew members, they are  true flying bullets .

They will compete in the same regatta course as the men’s category and  their base of operations will be in Port Olímpic , very close to  Escola Port .

America’s Cup Barcelona 2024 Dates

The America’s Cup to be held in Barcelona in 2024 is scheduled for the following dates:

  • September 2024: Challenger Selection Series
  • October 2024: Women’s, youth and men’s final regatta

At the moment these are all the details that are known but we will update this section as the official dates are published.

Location of the America’s Cup Barcelona 2024: Port Olimpic

At Escola Port we are going to have the luck and the privilege of living the America’s Cup Barcelona 2024 sailing  from the front row .

The regatta field will be located  between the Port Olímpic and Hotel W , the waters we know best since it is the area where we practice the  recreational nautical licenses and the Nautical Team Building events .

In addition,  the  FanZone  and the giant screens will be placed on our pier, so that we will have no choice but to live the event with all its intensity and emotion.

America’s Cup boats and teams will be in Port Vell , and we already know that some teams are training in Barcelona, so if you want to see the boats firsthand it is an ideal plan to take a walk there.

Curiosities

We collect in this section a couple of curiosities about America’s Cup that every fan should know and that we consider representative of the uniqueness of this event.

From secret keels to fly

A clear technical advance  was needed from the challengers to unseat the New York Yacht Club from its supremacy in the world sailing competition that it had held for 132 years.

Thus, in 1983 the Royal Perth Yacht Club entered America’s Cup with the Australia II , a sailboat that  hid a great secret  that they did not want to be known.

The advance was in the keel, so that every time the boat had to be taken out of the water, the Australian team placed some canvas so that it would not be visible.

yacht race barcelona

Source:  SailWorld.com

This not only served to  increase the audience’s interest in  the event, but also caused one of the biggest controversies in terms of compliance with the rules.

The New York Yacht Club claimed that the Australia II did not meet the Deed of Gift, for two reasons:

First, because they considered that  the “keel with wings” did not meet the technical requirements  of a valid 12-meter sailboat.

And second, because they considered that the design was the work of Dutch engineers, when the Deed of Gift determined that the boat should be  “designed and built in the same country to which the Club belonged” .

The jury determined that Australia II was a  valid boat to compete and was able to participate in the regatta.

The Australian team was able to overcome a 3-1 loss in a final to the best of 7 regattas, taking the coveted trophy and ending the streak of the New York club.

A milestone that marked the America’s Cup not only for the fact of defeating the NYYC, but also for being  an antecedent of the foil technology  that  we see in today’s most cutting-edge boats.

yacht race barcelona

“There is no second”

If there is  a phrase that represents America’s Cup,  this is it.

“Your Majesty, there is no second” | “Majesty, there is no second”

Legend has it that Queen Victoria was on the  Victoria & Albert Royal Yacht  enjoying the regatta near the Solent when she  asked a sailor to  see who would go first.

The conversation is said to have gone like this:

“Say signal-master, are the yachts in sight?”

“Yes, may it please Your Majesty.”

“Which is first?”

“The America.”

“Which is second?”

“Ah, Your Majesty, there is no second.”

Source:  americascup.com

Since then it is said that  there is only one winner in the America’s Cup  .

This phrase represents the competitiveness and desire for victory of the participating teams, perhaps somewhat inconsistent with the original  Deed of Gift , which begged for  “a trophy of friendly challenges.”

BOAT International partners with the Barcelona Superyacht Regatta at the 37th America's Cup

We are delighted to announce our partnership with the much-anticipated Barcelona Superyacht Regatta, taking place alongside the 37th America’s Cup from 4-6 October 2024.

Organised by the Reial Club Nàutic de Barcelona(RCNB) and BWA Yachting, the legendary race is affiliated with, and sanctioned by, the SuperYacht Racing Association (SYRA). The Superyacht Regatta is set against the historic backdrop of Barcelona and will feature some of the world’s most majestic yachts racing on the crystal Mediterranean waters.

The event is open to invited cruising yachts whose length is 27 metres or greater. The 2024 regatta will also offer a Corinthian Spirit class, and two racing classes: a 30-metre (100-foot) A Class and a 27-metre (90-foot) B Class.

While 2021’s event in New Zealand was beset by Covid restrictions preventing a number of superyachts from entering the country's waters, this year’s America’s Cup and associated events are set to return to its former glory.

An impressive number of yachts have already registered, including the 39-metre Halekai , 36-metre   Gitana , 44-metre Esense , 28-metre Nefertiti , 29-metre Patea , 25-metre Dark Horse , 35-metre Jasi and the 30-metre V . The deadline for entries closes 15 September.

As part of the Barcelona Superyacht Regatta programme, yacht owners – as well as guests, captains and crew – will be able to enjoy the following: daily access to the RCNB village during the regatta period; social events with drinks and tapas; a prize-giving ceremony and a Barcelona Superyacht Regatta Gala.

The Barcelona Superyacht Regatta is part of the Premier Regatta series which includes the world-famous Puig Vela Clàssica Barcelona race featuring some of the world's most classic 12-metres (4-7 September); the Maxi Regatta (25 – 29 September) and the iconic 'Golden Era' J Class championship, returning to the cup this year (7-11 October). It is hosted by event organisers America's Cup's Events (ACE) and RCNB.

Speaking about the Premier Regatta Series, Grant Dalton CEO of ACE, commented: “Huge thanks go to our Host venue Yacht Club Partner, the Real Club Naútico Barcelona, who have the vision and expertise to handle these great, classic events that will truly enhance the on-water and shoreside spectacle of the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup."

He continued: "Attracting the J Class and 12 Metres brings the America’s Cup history to life whilst the classic yachts, Maxis, and Superyachts all bristle with the very finest in technology and design. Barcelona will be a sensational festival of yachting in all its forms this summer and we look forward to welcoming everyone to this incredible venue for both the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup and the Premier Regatta Series.”

BWA Yachting can be contacted for berthing requests and bookings.

America’s Cup 2024 dates confirmed

Toby Heppell

  • Toby Heppell
  • November 30, 2022

Racing in the 2024 America's Cup match will take place in Barcelona, Spain in mid-October, with a calendar for racing now released

yacht race barcelona

Despite confirmation that the 37th America’s Cup would be raced in Barcelona back in March 2022, the specific dates in which the event would take place have only been revealed today, Wednesday 30th November 2022, with racing due to start on Saturday 12th October 2024.

We knew the event would need to take place at the tail end of the year in order to avoid clashing with the Olympic Games, which will take place in the summer of 2024 in France and the America’s Cup Event Authority had stated an intention to race in the September-October window, which offers a decent range of weather, with wind speeds usually around the 9-15 knot mark.

Racing in the 37th America’s Cup Match itself, which is a best of 13 (first to seven) format will start on Saturday 12th October with two races scheduled, followed by a further two races on Sunday 13th October 2024.

Racing will then pause for two days – at the discretion of the Regatta Director and after consultation with both the Defender and the Challenger – and depending on conditions, both of these days could be used to complete two races a day. The schedule as it stands, without the use of the Monday or Tuesday, would recommence on Wednesday 16th October 2024 for one race (race 5) in the Match followed by the final of the Women’s America’s Cup, which has now also been confirmed.

The Women’s America’s Cup Regatta Final will take place straight after Race 5 on October 16th 2024, with a stated aim to provide the women’s event significant coverage and profile.

Thursday 17th October is officially not scheduled for America’s Cup racing but again, subject to the Regatta Director’s discretion and agreement with the competitors, could be allocated for two further races depending on conditions, whilst Friday 18th October 2024 is officially marked as a ‘Spare Day’ for up to two more races. Two races per day are also scheduled for Saturday 19th October and Sunday 20th October 2024, if required.

yacht race barcelona

As with the last America’s Cup in New Zealand in 2021, the Event Authority hopes to have racing concluded over a weekend (19th/20th October 2024), however the schedule does allow for racing to continue into the following week from the 21st October 2024 through to the 27th October 2024, on reserve days if required.

Speaking about the format announcement, Grant Dalton, CEO of America’s Cup Events Limited commented: “We are excited to confirm the dates determining the Match racing period and our huge thanks go to the Capitán Marítimo and the Port of Barcelona authority who have been so pro-active and accommodative throughout the process. This is a significant event to plan for, with safety concerns at the top of the list for both spectators and competitors.

“I think the result is going to be something pretty spectacular with racing taking place in front of the beach, along the coast from the main port entrance right along the coast, past the Port Olímpic and out further east, offering a fantastic viewing opportunity for the public to see these remarkable boats at full pace.”

The announcement of these event dates has been on the cards for some time, with the America’s Cup protocol stating that: The precise dates determining the Match Racing Period and the race schedule shall be announced by ACE on or before 30 November 2022 .

yacht race barcelona

Dates for the Women’s and Youth America’s Cup series (which will take place in AC40s) have yet to be finalised.

It is, however, somewhat disappointing to see only the dates for the America’s Cup match itself and the final of the Women’s America’s Cup final announced, with the Challenger Selection Series (the competition which decides which team will face Cup Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand in the America’s Cup match) still without firm dates. And it is still unclear when the rest of the Women’s America’s Cup will take place or, indeed, the Youth America’s Cup .

In order to come up with the racing area and dates for Cup racing, an agreement needed to be reached with Barcelona’s Capitán Marítimo to create a spectator area to the south of the City along Barcelona’s beachfront.

Additionally, a permanent exclusion zone for the duration of the racing has been agreed to ensure safety for both the competitors and the expected spectator boats that will take the opportunity to see the AC75s and AC40s at close range.

Although this latest announcement from the America’s Cup Event Authority states that the racing area for the Challenger Selection Series and the America’s Cup have both been confirmed in the same location, that there are not yet dates for the Selection Series implies there may still be some further conversations to be had about the exclusion zones for that, the Women’s America’s Cup series and the Youth America’s Cup too.

‘Iconic’ Barcelona to host ‘most recognised sailing event’, America’s Cup in 2024

Barcelona has been confirmed as the host venue for the 2024 America’s Cup , the world’s oldest international yacht race.

It means that the city will be the first venue ever to host both an Olympic Games and an America’s Cup yachting event.

Barcelona’s eclectic mix of ‘history and modernity’ and a reputation as ‘one of the most iconic and attractive cities in the world’ sealed the decision for the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron , the winners of the last edition of the race.

Tradition dictates that the winning team have the right to decide on the host city for the next race. The New Zealand team retained the cup in 2021, when they had selected Auckland as the start for that year.

When deciding on the host city for 2024, other contenders had included Cork in Ireland, Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, and the southern Spanish city of Malaga .

Explaining the decision to opt for Barcelona, Grant Dalton , CEO of Emirates Team New Zealand, said that the city ‘really is one of the most recognised cities in the world, so to have the ability to host the most recognised sailing event in the world is hugely exciting.’

He went on to describe how the sport and America’s Cup event has expanded and developed in recent years and the importance of this, saying that ‘having the event hosted in a significant city such as Barcelona will allow us to propel the growth trajectory on the global sporting stage’.

The city’s bid to host the event was a combined effort of organisations from both the private and public sectors, including the Catalan government, Barcelona City Council, City Hall of Barcelona, Port of Barcelona, and Barcelona Global, an investment agency.

Also working on the bid was Barcelona & Partners , a non-profit organisation consisting of over 200 leading institutions in the city, who are aiming to make Barcelona one of the world’s best cities for talent and economic activity.

Barcelona being awarded the accolade of host venue for the race is a significant achievement, as it allows the city to be a focus for a global audience.

Speaking to Catalunya Ràdio earlier this week about the bid, Catalan Business Minister, Roger Torrent , said that ‘the America’s Cup is a very important brand’ that will help attract further investment into the region, highlighting that the event is particularly high profile with American audiences.

Explaining more about the benefits of this, Catalan president Pere Aragonés  said ‘it is a historic sporting event, which has a great projection worldwide at an international level, economically and for tourism. It is an event that will generate a return across many platforms over years and will leave a very important legacy for Catalonia’.

Barcelona’s reputation as a hub for innovation and emerging technologies, along with sustainable development, including in the nautical sector, was a key part of the city’s bid, and this was highlighted in the announcement confirming its selection as host venue.

PRELIMINARY REGATTAS

The journey to the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup Barcelona begins with the Preliminary Regattas that will serve as warm-up races ahead of the Louis Vuitton Cup (Challenger Selection Series).

The first preliminary regatta was held in Vilanova i La Geltrú from 14th to 17th September 2023. The teams then headed to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, for the America's Cup Preliminary Regatta Jeddah, presented by NEOM between 29th November to 2nd December 2023. The third and last preliminary regatta will be held in August 2024 in Barcelona. The first two regattas were raced in the strict one-design AC40s – the world’s newest and most exciting foiling class with top speeds touching 50 knots and perhaps beyond. Looking forward to 2024, we will see the final preliminary regatta in Barcelona where all the America’s Cup teams will race in their new AC75s for the very first time. The race for the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup Barcelona is well and truly on.

VILANOVA i LA GELTRÚ: 14–17 SEPTEMBER 2023

Vilanova i La Geltrú is set to welcome the America’s Cup world with the announcement of the first preliminary regatta to be held in the beautiful seaside city some 45 kilometres to the west of Barcelona.

In the 19th century, Vilanova i La Geltrú was fondly known as ‘Havana Xica’ or ‘Little Havana’, and today it is one of the country's leading capitals of popular and traditional culture. Els Tres Tombs and the town's carnival, declared a Heritage Festival of National Interest, are just some of the events that have made the capital of El Garraf a must-see destination on the Spanish coastline. The splendid seafront promenade, where colonial-style buildings live in harmony with fishermen's houses, its Rambla, the city's social and retail hub, its wide range of fish and seafood culinary offerings and the famous xató dish mark Vilanova i La Geltrú as one of the jewels of not only the region of Catalonia but all of Spain.

JEDDAH: 29 NOVEMBER – 2 DECEMBER 2023

Jeddah, set on the Red Sea and with a bustling port and busy city centre is regarded as one of the most lavish ports in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The city has a rich heritage fusing the old and the new with its UNESCO-listed historic centre Al Balad, often referred to as the gateway to Mecca, combining with soaring modern architecture and five star luxury around the Jeddah Yacht Club and Marina. The picturesque Jeddah Waterfront offers the perfect vista onto the Red Sea where visitors can relax, enjoy the breath-taking views and discover the famous Al Rahma mosque, otherwise known as the ‘Floating Mosque.’

Often referred to as the ‘Mermaid of the Red Sea,’ the city’s motto is: ‘Jeddah is Different’ reflecting the truly diverse and cosmopolitan nature of the city, which features spectacular international events like the Red Sea International Film Festival and sporting events encompassing Formula 1™, football, golf, athletics, cricket, basketball, boxing and equestrian. Visiting Jeddah, you get to truly appreciate the distinct vibe of the city. It is a lively, progressive and interesting destination that offers much with a rich history and historical significance.

BARCELONA: 22–25 AUGUST 2024

The final preliminary regatta will be held in Barcelona in August 2024. The America’s Cup teams will race on their new AC75s for the first time, and the Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand, will line up against the Challenger syndicates offering the first indication of who to watch for in the Louis Vuitton Cup (Challenger Selection Series).

More details on the event to follow shortly.

WHO’S RACING: Emirates Team New Zealand, INEOS Britannia, Alinghi Red Bull Racing, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, NYYC American Magic and Orient Express Racing Team

All of the teams entered in the Louis Vuitton 37 th America’s Cup in Barcelona 2024 are fielding teams with representation from the Defenders, Emirates Team New Zealand, the Challenger of Record INEOS Britannia and the Challengers: Alinghi Red Bull Racing, NYYC American Magic, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli and Orient Express Racing Team.

If the first Preliminary Regatta in Vilanova i La Geltrú is anything to go by, then NYYC American Magic and Emirates Team New Zealand, the Defender of the America’s Cup, will be the teams that everyone will be benchmarking themselves against.

The America's Cup Preliminary Regatta Jeddah, presented by NEOM in Saudi Arabia, saw the top sailors from the America’s Cup teams compete against each other in equally matched AC40 monohull foilers again. The impressive sailing conditions on the Red Sea provided a world-class sailing event with Emirates Team New Zealand leading the scoreboard and taking away the win at the final match race against Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli.

WHAT BOATS: AC40 & AC75

For the first two Preliminary Regattas in 2023, racing will be conducted in the team’s AC40 in a very strict one-design set-up. The boat, its controls, sails, foils and mechanisms will all be standardised, so the emphasis is firmly on race-craft, positioning and foiling technique.

Each team will consist of four sailors with two helms steering from the forward ‘pod’ and two crew members responsible for sail and foil trim sitting in the aft pods. All control systems are battery-operated. The racing itself will start with fleet racing flights to determine the top two teams who will then proceed on to a final match race (one-on-one) to decide the spoils of victory.

The third and last preliminary regattas in 2024 will be raced on the new AC75s: A step on from what we saw during the 36th America's Cup in Auckland in 2021. The foils will be larger, the boats will be lighter and, onboard, the electronics and software systems will be vastly upgraded. The number of crew has been reduced to 8 sailors, which means that the cyclors, introduced by Emirates Team New Zealand in 2017, return to the game.

HOW TO WATCH

Racing will be held to ensure the maximum opportunity for spectators to see the AC40s in action from the shoreside at both Vilanova i La Geltrú and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in 2023. For the Preliminary Regatta in Barcelona scheduled for August 2024, the racecourse for the AC75 event will be the America’s Cup race course as defined in the Protocol and situated just metres off the La Barcelonetta beachfront and all along towards Port Olímpic.

HOW TO FOLLOW

The eyes of the world were on the beautiful town of Vilanova i la Geltrú as the first regatta on the journey to the Louis Vuitton 37th America's Cup in Barcelona was held in September 2023, and we followed the fleet to their second stop in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in November 2023.

All racing will be broadcast free-to-air through a dedicated America’s Cup television production. The regattas will offer the world a first glimpse of what can be expected when the UniCredit Youth & Puig Women’s America’s Cup begin in earnest in September and October 2024 in Barcelona as well as the start to the Louis Vuitton Cup (Challenger Selection Series). The Preliminary Regattas will be the first time the AC40 fleet will race each other over fleet and match racing courses, and the AC75s will have their first official racing in the Preliminary Regatta Barcelona.
