Mulder Healey review: Stunning motoryacht with the coolest helm seats ever

  • Top stories

When the grandson of Donald Healey builds a motor yacht, the result is just as arresting as the famous eponymous sports car with its two-tone paint...

You might not know the cider – or cyder, as they say in Cornwall – but you probably know the name.

David Healey, founder of Healeys Cornish Cyder Farm and the man behind the Mulder Healey motor yacht, is the grandson of Donald Healey, the man behind the numerous iconic British sports cars that bore his name.

According to David, as well as being a fine engineer and world-renowned motor sports star – he won the Monte Carlo Rally in 1931 – Donald was a classic example of what used to be known as a tinkerer.

He has a childhood memory of his grandfather fixing a troublesome door by designing, making and installing a pressure switch under the mat to open it automatically.

On another occasion, David remembers, he found that his grandmother’s best teaspoons had been modified with a hacksaw into the ideal shape for eating grapefruit.

David, 65, is happy to see himself as a chip off the old block, as he explains to me when we meet on board the boat in Falmouth. Like his grandfather, he seems to be a man always in need of a project of some sort.

The family firm he founded back in the Eighties started out as an off-licence, but it was soon also making its own cider, and then growing its own apples, and now distils its own whisky, brandy, and gin as well – producing the base spirit for the gin, naturally enough, from apples.

So when David handed over the reins of the company a few years ago to his sons, Joe and Sam, he realised that he would need something else to do, if only to avoid making a nuisance of himself by bombarding them with unwanted advice and suggestions.

The Mulder Healey is the result. Most retired people who want to go cruising would look at the boats available in today’s market and probably feel that they were spoilt for choice.

Not David. Reminding me that as well as an automotive engineer, his grandfather Donald was also a boatbuilder – Healey runabouts were very popular in the Fifties and Sixties, with more than 1,000 built – he had some very specific ideas of his own.

“I wanted a boat that was capable of maintaining 20 knots in two-metre seas, in style and comfort,” he recalls.

There are plenty of boats that can fulfil the first part of that brief – lifeboats, pilot launches, the ‘very slender vessels’ used by special forces – but very few that can do so while also satisfying the second.

The two-seater was the creation of passionate engineer, designer, Monte Carlo Rally winner, pilot and one-time runabout boatbuilder, Sir Donald Healey, who died in 1988 at the age of 89.

The Mulder Healey side by side with the 1060s Austin Healey 3000.

Built of lightweight aluminum by the Mulder Shipyard in the Netherlands from a design by leading Dutch naval architect Guido de Groot and an offshore hull design by Vripack , the Mulder Healey 1800 is a floating tribute to that iconic Healey 3000.

Everything from that ice-blue and white two-tone paintwork, to the curvy transom, to hull windows shaped like the two-seater’s chrome fender badge, to the raked-back, stainless-steel-framed windshield on the yacht’s roof. It’s all Healey 3000-inspired.

The Mulder Healey custom yacht is modeled after the 1960s Austin Healey 3000.

“Yes, it’s very much a tribute to my grandfather’s best-known sportscar and my own personal favorite Austin Healey,” David Healey told Robb Report . “Guido de Groot did a great job of incorporating the car’s key design cues.”

But it was the grandson who came up with arguably the motoryacht’s coolest Healey 3000-inspired feature: the levitating helm seats.

At the touch of a button, an oversized panel in the roof powers open. Another touch of a button and the helm seat slowly rises on a huge hydraulic pedestal. It allows Healey to steer the yacht perched behind that low, Healey-style windshield using controls mounted on the armrests.

“The whole idea seems quite mad. But when you’re up there, sitting behind that low windscreen with the wind in your face, it feels like you’re driving a sportscar,” says Healey, who recently retired from his family-run Healeys cider-making business in England’s Cornwall.

“My wife tells me her only disappointment with the system is that there isn’t some kind of James Bond eject button to shoot me off the boat.”

The Mulder Healey custom yacht is modeled after the 1960s Austin Healey 3000.

Healey also says much of the decision to build the yacht was down to his wife Kay (the yacht is named MYK , short for My Kay) who became tired of her husband’s love of sailing. Seems Mrs. Healey was over “pulling-in sails” and not knowing when she was going to arrive into port.

“Our brief to the designer and naval architect was pretty simple; the boat should be capable of 20 knots, in six-foot-plus seas, and cruise in comfort from Cornwall down to the Mediterranean.”

It was also Kay who oversaw the interior design and layout of the cabins. She called for two main cabins—a forward guest, and a master suite amidships. One innovative feature of the master is the central dividing partition that can transform the space into two separate cabins for when the entire Healey family goes cruising.

As for the rest of the layout, the main salon opens out on to an oversized back deck and features deep windows to flood the space with light. One of David Healey’s “touches” was the addition of power-lowering forward side windows for extra ventilation. He also specified windows in the aft deck overhang to add light.

Steps from the salon lead down into a spacious galley, which includes a small office area so Healey can keep involved with his cider business. Throughout the entire boat, underfloor heating takes the chill out of Cornish summer nights.

Flat out, the big Volvos can punch MYK to a top speed of over 26 mph, and cruise comfortably at 23. Ease all the way back to a trawler-like 10mph and she’ll run for over 1,200 nautical miles—that’s Cornwall to Gibraltar and the gateway to the Med—between fill-ups.

Part of the yacht’s speed and rugged offshore capability is down to the patented “Slide Hull” semi-planing design by Holland’s Vripack studio. Its claim to fame includes impressive stability and a smooth ride in rough seas, coupled with low fuel consumption.

So, will there be a Healey 1800 Mark 2? According to Healey, work is already progressing on a second boat, but this time it’ll be built by the Pendennis Shipyard, in Falmouth, England, in Healey’s beloved Cornwall.

“It’s exciting to think of a Healey boat built here in Cornwall,” he says. “I’m sure that would make my grandfather proud.”

Head-Turning Mulder Healey 60: Lots of New Ideas

' src=

The new 60-foot Mulder Healey 1800 comes with both a back story and some head-turning innovations, including a helm seat that rises through an opening in the hardtop reminiscent of a special effects scene from a James Bond film.

The back story is that the boat was built to recreate some of the spirit and style of an Austin Healey sports car. The boat’s owner, David Healey, is the grandson of Donald Healey, who created the famous British cars.

David Healey founded Healeys Cornish Cyder Farm in the UK. He’s now 65 and retired and his sons are running the business. He and his wife are lifelong sailors, but he says she got tired of not knowing how long it would take to get anywhere. It was time to move to a powerboat.

mulder healey yacht

Healey turned to Vripack and de Groot in the Netherlands for the design, and to the Mulder Shipyard there for the build. He said he wanted a boat that would go 20 knots in style and comfort and handle the waters from the North Sea down to the Med.

Mulder just launched the boat, and Healey is more than happy, as you can see in the video below. He says he and his wife now “look forward to coming on the boat, instead of other boats where you want to go to a hotel room.”

The two-tone metallic blue and white color scheme is similar to the Austin Healey 100S; so is the small windshield on the cabin top that protects the captain and navigator when they’re sitting up there. And the yacht’s lines also are designed to be look like those on the sports car.

mulder healey yacht

Sone user-friendly features on the yacht include windows that drop down electrically in the salon to provide full ventilation, and a push-button partition that drops down from the ceiling in the guest stateroom so that two couples could sleep there in privacy.

But the standout feature is the helm chair that goes up through the roof. “Everybody said I was nuts” when he thought of that, Healey says.

To go up, the captain first pushes a button to open a forward portion of the roof, then another button to raise the helm chair on a large stainless steel pedestal, until it is over the rooftop, and behind the windscreen. All the yacht’s controls are set in two armrests that rise with the seat, so the captain can run the boat from up top. There’s a matching seat on the port side so that two people can go up, or down, together.

The yacht has two staterooms with en suite  heads, a large galley and roomy salon. An extended hardtop protects the cockpit, which has glass panels, large settees and an outdoor galley.

Power comes from twin 600-hp Volvo D8 engines, delivering a top speed of 24 knots and a cruising speed of 24 knots.

Specs.: LOA: 60’6”; Beam: 16’9”; Draft: 4’1”; Disp.: 30 tons; Fuel: 1,188 gals.; Water: 237 gals.; Power: 2×600-hp Volvo D8s. Read more at  https://www.muldershipyard.nl/series/custom-build/healey-1800/ and see the video with Healey, produced by Motor Boat & Yachting :

These Russian stone carvings date back to 12,000 BC. WHAT??!

mulder healey yacht

With its gracious, broad and tree-lined boulevards, well maintained turn of the 19th to 20th century buildings and a lively riverfront, the city of Khabarovsk is often called the most European city in Asia. Nothing in the tranquil city hints of a history that goes beyond the middle of the 19th century, but a short road trip along the Amur River is enough to unfurl a treasure trove of petroglyphs (prehistoric rock carvings) that are believed to date back to 12,000 BC.

Khabarovsk's city center

Khabarovsk's city center

The Khabarovsk Krai, which has about 789,000 square kilometers of territory, is one of the most sparsely populated places on the planet. These vast swathes of emptiness are visible when one drives on the highway that connects Khabarovsk with the industrial city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur.

The Nanai village of Sikachi-Alyan on the Amur River

The Nanai village of Sikachi-Alyan on the Amur River

75 kilometers north of Khabarovsk and just off the highway and on the right bank of the Amur is the Nanai village of Sikachi-Alyan, where the petroglyphs are located. Residents call the village the ‘home of angry spirits’, thanks to the mystical occurrences that many have claimed to witness there.

History on the rocks

The area has about 200 petroglyphs, with a significant number being well preserved. The petroglyphs are easily accessible, as they are near the water’s edge on basalt boulders.

Petroglyphs of Sikachi-Alyan

Petroglyphs of Sikachi-Alyan

The best time to visit the area is actually early or late winter (despite the brutal cold), since the overflowing waters of the Amur hide them in the warmer months. Floods and ice floes have also caused considerable damage to many of the petroglyphs. Locals say some of the boulders have been turned upside down.

The carvings that date from different periods depict hunting scenes, animals, such as elk, horses and mammoths, shamans and shamanic masks and even people sitting in boats.

mulder healey yacht

Russia’s Far East is believed to have been one of the last habitats of mammoths before they became extinct. Among the best-preserved petroglyphs of Sikachi-Alyan, there is one engraving that clearly depicts a mammoth, while another shows a mammoth with an unknown creature. There’s also a large depiction of a beast with a tail.

Svetlana Onenko, a local historian who is also the curator of the indigenous people’s ethnographic museum and cultural center in Sikachi-Alyan, says the very existence of the mammoth depictions proves that the petroglyphs date back to around 12,000 BC. She adds that the ancient dwellers of this area probably also hunted mammoths.

The older images, dating to the Paleolithic age, were carved out using stone tools. It should be noted that some archaeologists argue that the wild horses depicted in some of the petroglyphs did not exist in the Amur Region even in the Neolithic age.

mulder healey yacht

The newer carvings, including those of shamans and shamanic masks were used with more modern tools. These images are sacred to the Nanai and other indigenous groups who live in the village with a total population of just 300. Onenko says the members of the indigenous community are descended from the people who carved out the petroglyphs. Some European anthropologists, however, believe that the indigenous people were more recent settlers, who moved to the area around 2,000 years ago from Manchuria.

An abode of Shamanism

Neo-Shamanists visit the area from different parts of the world and take part in rituals, which some suspect as being influenced by a cult. Such is the belief in Shamanism in this area that the museum, which has a large number of indigenous artefacts, crafts and ancient Chinese coins, keeps its Shamanic objects in a designated space that is ritually blessed. “Shamanic objects are believed to possess a powerful (and potentially dangerous) energy,” Onenko says.

A Sikachi-Alyan's shaman

Locals claim to spot mystic occurrences near the so-called Starukha (Eng.: “old lady”) rock formation. According to indigenous legends, human beings did not die at one point of time, but their population grew so large that there wasn’t enough food for everyone. So the earth’s spirits decided that people, like animals, would also have to die.

The Starukha rock formation

The Starukha was apparently the first human being to face death and ended up turning into that big (and apparently haunted) rock.

First Russian visitor

While the Nanai and other indigenous groups were aware of the existence of the petroglyphs for centuries, the outside world came to know of them only in 1859, a year after the foundation of the city of Khabarovsk.

This “discovery” was made by Richard Maack, a geographer, naturalist and explorer who set out on an expedition of the Amur and Ussuri valleys. Maack, who was born in the Russian Empire’s Baltic governorate of Livonia, studied natural sciences at the University of St. Petersburg and undertook several expeditions to Siberia and the Russian Far East in the 1850s.

A portrait of Richard Maack (L); and his drawing of an indigenous people's house

Maack’s main area of interest was botany and six previously unknown plants that he collected by the Amur were named after him. His expedition north of the newly-founded Khabarovsk led him to Sikachi-Alyan, where he spotted the petroglyphs. There are less than a handful of surviving copies of Maack’s book titled, ‘Travel on the Amur river made by order of the Siberian department of the Emperor’s Russian Geographical Society in 1855’, which contains a wealth of information.

Russian archaeologists, scientists and historians took a great interest in the petroglyphs in the 20th century. In the 1930s, archaeologist Nikolai Kharlamov photographed them in detail. Three decades later, ethnographer and historian Alexei Okladnikov went on several expeditions to the area and wrote about the petroglyphs in detail in two books. His findings suggest that the artwork of Sikachi-Alyan had some resemblance to its counterparts from South East Asia, Polynesia and Australia.

The petroglyphs of Sikachi-Alyan are now among the most visited sites in Khabarovsk Krai. The Russian federal government was declared the legal owner of the petroglyphs in 2018 and efforts are underway to better preserve them, as well get the rock formations listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
