About the Y72

Finished to high standards throughout, the all-new Y72s design features are comparable to those of larger Y Class yachts. Her spacious saloon has a sociable layout with a bar area and open plan galley, complemented by a multi-zone Naim audio system. Eight guests are accommodated across four well-appointed en suite cabins with the full beam master stateroom accessible via a private stairway from the saloon. There is a further aft cabin with two berths for crew or occasional guests.

Alison Thompson has over 20 years of experience in learning and development roles. Alison is currently working as the Head of OD & People Development at PGL Travel. Prior to that, they held the position of Head of Learning and Development at Princess Yachts, where they were responsible for designing and delivering the organization's learning and development strategy. Alison also oversaw talent management, leadership development, apprenticeship programs, compliance training, and external training partnerships. Before this, Alison worked in various learning and development roles at Defence Equipment & Support, MiHomecare, Mitie, and New Horizons Computer Learning Centers. Alison has extensive experience in developing learning and development strategies, managing training teams, implementing technology-based training platforms, and building relationships with key stakeholders.

Alison Thompson holds a Master's degree in Creative Events Management from Falmouth University, which they obtained from 2017 to 2019. Prior to that, they pursued a postgraduate degree in Education specializing in Certificate in Education from the University of Plymouth. Unfortunately, the duration of their education at University of Plymouth is not specified. Additionally, Alison has certifications as an Insights Practitioner, which they achieved in December 2017, and as a Myers Briggs Practitioner, although details regarding the institution and date of obtaining their Myers Briggs certification are not provided.

A Princess Royal Award for Princess Yachts’ Apprenticeship Programme

South Devon College employer partner, Princess Yachts, are thrilled to announce that they have been awarded a Princess Royal Training Awards for their #Apprenticeship scheme. The awards are selected by HRH The Princess Royal and the President of City & Guilds Group to recognise organisations whose training has delivered measurable business impact.

The City & Guilds Group announced on Friday, 14 August that 43 recipients from a wealth of sectors have been commended by the 2020 Princess Royal Training Awards. The already award winning Princess Yachts Apprenticeship scheme certainly deserves the recognition it is receiving, as recruitment continued throughout the Covid-19 lockdown period via Zoom interviews, and a record number of apprentices will be starting their programme at Princess Yachts in September 2020, with apprentices placed across all areas of the business.

Now in its fifth year, the Princess Royal Training Awards recognises employers across the United Kingdom with outstanding training and development programmes that have had a direct impact on business performance. Princess Yachts as a 2020 winner of this award have demonstrated ‘exceptional commitment to training, despite facing unprecedented challenges of Covid-19’ according to the judges.

Princess Yachts won the award for ‘positioning apprenticeships as a viable career choice’. Princess was recognised for having invested in its apprenticeship programme to ensure that it has a strong talent pipeline in place. Apprenticeships at Princess are open to employees of any age, with apprentices progressing their career path within the business and in fact 10% of the current managers within the business are former apprentices. Getting an apprenticeship with Princess Yachts is widely viewed as an extremely attractive career opportunity in the region.

South Devon College have helped to accommodate the growth of Princess Yacht’s apprenticeships since forming their partnership in October last year with a unique and innovative apprenticeship programme. At the College’s Paignton Campus is the dedicated Princess Yachts Learning Academy workshop facility. Inside is one of the luxury yacht builder’s V40 hulls allowing apprentices to work with the same industry-standard products and equipment, whether at their workplace or studying at the College.

“We are so pleased to be awarded a Princess Royal Training Award for our apprenticeship programme,” says Alison Thompson, Head of Learning & Development at Princess Yachts,

“the assessment process was rigorous and very different this year taking place remotely via MS Teams. However, the assessors took the time to speak to some of our apprentices and to gain a better understanding of our collaborative partnership with South Devon College who support us in the delivery of our programme. It is great to know we are setting the right standards, experience and support to our apprentices as they begin their career with us and ultimately the marine industry.”

Maritime UK, the umbrella body for the maritime sector, is today announcing the inaugural Commissioners to serve on the Maritime Skills Commission . 

Government and industry, working through Maritime UK, has established the Maritime Skills Commission (MSC) to lead the sector’s work in ensuring the maritime sector has a pipeline of talented people to serve all parts of the sector covering shipping, ports, leisure marine, engineering, science and professional services.

The MSC is a core element of delivering the Department for Transport’s Maritime 2050 strategy and reports jointly to the Maritime Minister and to Maritime UK’s National Council.

Professor Graham Baldwin, Vice Chancellor at the University of Central Lancashire, was appointed Chair of the Commission in January.

It has been formed to:

• Understand the skills needs of the sector, including the effects of technological change, and to make recommendations for action
• Ensure that no part of the sector suffers from serious skills shortages or skills gaps
• Ensure that the sector has the apprenticeships and qualifications it needs
• Ensure the sector has the training provision it needs, (including the use of technology to engage learners and keep costs down)
• Provide employers and individuals with clear information about career paths and re-training options
• Ensure that employers have good quality recruits for their vacancies through effective promotion of maritime careers
• Increase exports of maritime education and training.

Maritime UK’s Diversity in Maritime Taskforce and Careers Taskforce will work closely with the Commission to ensure their work programmes reflect the latest labour market intelligence produced by the MSC.

The inaugural meeting of the Commission will be on Thursday 2 July 2020.

Graham Baldwin, Chair, Maritime Skills Commission said:

“I am delighted to Chair the Maritime Skills Commission and lead this group of highly skilled, diverse Commissioners to ensure the sector is equipped with a continuous pipeline of talented people and resources. Over the past few months, I have undertaken a robust mapping exercise to ensure the MSC has coverage across the five maritime sectors covered by Maritime UK.

I have also ensured it has the right balance of geographical coverage, seniority, diversity, knowledge of HR and current skills systems, as well as people who understand the impact of technical changes such as automation and digitisation.”

Kelly Tolhurst, Maritime Minister said:

“Our maritime sector thrives because of the well trained, highly skilled makeup of our workers. These commissioners will play a vital role in ensuring employees have the skills they need to keep the industry growing as we navigate our way out of Covid-19.”

Harry Theochari, Chair of Maritime UK said:

“The Commission was always a critical element of Maritime 2050, but now, following coronavirus, its role is even more pivotal, and urgent. It has pressing work to get on with to understand what impact the pandemic has had, and will have, on the labour market. I am delighted to welcome the new Commissioners to post and know that they want to get down to work straight away. The Commission is a true embodiment of the kind of partnership between industry and government that we need to enhance the UK’s position as a world-class maritime nation.”
