About Model Boat Pond

I discovered Model Boat Pond after stumbling upon a public body of water via Google Satellite one day. Determined to visit as many ponds and lakes as I can in San Diego County, I set out to visit it!

Everyone was friendly and happy to have me hang out and watch. This pond is located within a beautiful little nook right next to Vacation Isle.  This is a great starting point for a beautiful walk.  So many scenic points of interest in such a small area.

History of Model Boat Pond

It turns out this pond has quite an extensive history, dating back to 1939! The pond was originally built into the Mission Bay master plan in 1939 as a continuation of a long standing program with the City Schools of San Diego of building Model Boats and competing between schools on the pond.

Once the club was formed the program was eventually cut off, by the Argonauts continued their gatherings.

In the 50’s both radio-controlled model boats at the Model Yacht Club shared the pond. With the demise of the San Diego Model Yacht Club, the Argonauts became the only organization using the pond and today considers the pond its home water.

Cool San Diego Sights!

Fun sailing on Mission Bay’s model boat pond.

A silvery sheet of water near the center of Vacation Isle is where dreams take sail. Tiny dreams with tiny sails.

Today I took a long meandering walk about Mission Bay, and spent a fair amount of time lingering around what is simply called the model yacht pond. Connected to the bay with an underground pipe, the pond rises and falls with the ocean’s tides. The tranquil sheet of saltwater, surrounded by grass, trees and the many picnic benches of Vacation Isle Park, has been enjoyed by model boat hobbyists for over half a century.

A very cool club called the San Diego Argonauts utilizes the model yacht pond for radio control model boating and racing. Every Saturday morning, their Scale Boat Division runs electric and steam-powered craft on the pond. Many of the tiny vessels are remarkably detailed, even museum quality. One tiny tugboat even blew its horn at me while I took some photographs!

Saturday afternoons is when the wind-driven sailboats come out to compete or practice. The Sail Division of the San Diego Argonauts has many skippers who’ve won National Championships!

Today I saw so many sails at once, I could hardly believe it! The model yacht pond was the scene of a glorious regatta. These model boat sails tack by remote control, so racing around the tiny floating buoys requires many of the same strategies as racing a full-size sailboat!

On Sunday the pond features model power boats, which can reach speeds of 60 miles per hour! I’ll definitely have to check that out one weekend! I’ll take pictures!

Model boating is a fascinating, beautiful hobby to watch. I’ll bet it’s a lot of fun building a boat and watching it float across this magical pond!

I’ve walked past the pond before, but this is the first time I’ve seen the boats on it!

That’s amazing that they could adjust the sails to catch the wind, and steer…all from remote control.

It was really cool. All from a hand-held controller like people use for RC planes.

Yes, but they weren’t nearly so high tech. Just little wooden boats that (mostly) kids sailed.

When I was little I made tiny boats using a bottle cork, toothpick, square piece of paper, and a penny!

Mission Bay Guide: Vacation Isle

San Diego’s Mission Bay is one of the city’s prime attractions.  There are all kinds of water-based activities and 27-miles of shoreline.  This is our guide to Vacation Isle located in the center of Mission Bay.

• Location: 1600 Vacation Rd, San Diego, CA 92109
• Parking: Large parking lots at Ski Beach. Smaller parking lots at North Cove Beach and Vacation Isle Park
• Facilities: Restrooms at Ski Beech and Vacation Isle Park
• Lifeguards: None
• Rentals: Paradise Point has a rental location. Ski Beach may have seasonal rentals.  Rental facilities also available directly across the bridge at Dana Landing by SeaWorld.

NOTE: Pictures in the original article were taken during summer 2020.  Updates include pictures taken during winter 2021 at low tide.

Jump Ahead To

Vacation Isle is a man-made island in the center of Mission Bay.  Ingraham Street runs through the middle and connects the island to Dana Landing and SeaWorld in the south and Crown Point/Pacific Beach in the north.

The island can be divided into four areas.  Ski Beach takes up the eastern half of the island with Paradise Point, North Cove Beach and Vacation Isle Park on the western half.  The entire island is less than half a mile in each direction.

As its name implies Ski Beach is a prime location for jet skiing and water skiing.  There is plenty of parking in the large parking lots where parking spaces are designed for vehicles with trailers.  Of course, there is a boat ramp.

This is also a great area for families with small children.  There are restrooms, plenty of grassy area and playgrounds.

The downside is that Ski Beach is designed primarily for motor sports.  This is not the place for swimming, paddle boarding or kayaking.  Very small children can wade into the water but that is about all.

North Cove Beach

North Cove Beach is one of the most secluded areas of Mission Bay.  The beach is located off a side street at the entrance to Paradise Point resort.

There is a small parking lot and the beach itself is fairly small.  However, it is generally not very crowded and the cove is away from the activity of Mission Bay.

Most of the horseshoe shaped beach area is part of the Paradise Point Resort beach area.

North Cove Beach is also a popular spot for fishing near the bridge that connects Vacation Isle to Crown Point.

Vacation Isle Park

Vacation Isle Park is a large grassy park in the southwest corner of Vacation Isle.  This is a great place for family picnics, but it is not a beach area.

The Model Yacht Pond or Model Boat Pond is a key feature of the area.  As the name implies it is a place to sail model boats.

Paradise Point Resort

Paradise Point Resort is one of San Diego’s most attractive lodging options.  The resort takes up much of the western end of Vacation Isle.

Paradise Point has several dining options.  The Barefoot Bar and Grill has always been a popular spot even for locals.

Vacation Isle

This park area is located in the south end of Vacation Isle, off of Ingraham Street, across from Ski Beach.

Vacation Isle East is located east of the Model Yacht Pond while Vacation Isle West is located to the west of the pond. Both locations have grassy park areas with sandy beaches, picnic tables, fire rings and restrooms. There are trees which provide lots of shade. Vacation Isle East has a picnic gazebo as well. No more than one inflatable is allowed per site.

Note: There is no playground or lifeguards on duty at these parks.

From south or east San Diego, take Interstate 8 to the Sports Arena Boulevard exit, make a right onto West Mission Bay Drive, and continue straight to Ingraham Street. Cross over one bridge, and then make a left at the stoplight to West Vacation Road.

From north San Diego, take Interstate 5 to the Sea World Drive exit, make a right onto Sea World Drive, and continue straight to Ingraham Street. Cross over one bridge, and then make a left at the stoplight to West Vacation Road.

Parking is free in these lots, but they do fill up early during the summer months.

RACE WEEK 2021

The San Diego Argonauts, Sail Division, is proud to host the 2021 National Championship Regatta Series August 4-August 15 and are excited to share the San Diego Model Yacht Pond on Vacation Isle in Mission Bay with some of the best sailors around the world and across the United States. This is truly an international event!

The increasing interest in RC Sailing/Racing is evident by the number of entries in this years Regatta Series. We are excited to announce these entries in the following classes :

SOLING 50 SUMMER REGATTA

We had a nice day of wind and good attendance for the SOLING 50 SUMMER REGATTA.  The class had a 9 boat fleet all eager to earn a shot at the elusive annual chevron award. Competitive RC Sailing at its best!  Our top 3 sailors at the podium today all earned that award! CONGRATULATIONS, 1st-Ken Campbell, 2nd-Gerry Wold and 3rd-Kerim Baran. Special recognition to Kerim for achieving his first Chevron.  FANTASTIC..

Ok guys – If our friend Bob Williams can go twelve races on two bad knees and a pair of roller-skates – we just don’t have any excuses, do we! Thank you Bob for being our inspiration! 

As always- a standing ovation to Fred Rocha for his leadership, support and enthusiasm.. Also a big hand for todays volunteers. Kim Robbins, Greg Williams, Ty Beach (Soling 50 Class Secretary) and Ben Reeves (drone pilot).

Just to the east of our little pond, by the wind graph above, you can see we had a typical summer day on Mission Bay. Then add resorts, pine trees, parking lots and other obstructions to the equation.. You get the idea.. This is a pretty challenging place to sail!

A HUGE Thank You and extended hand of appreciation to our Argonaut leadership. This would not be possible without them! Fred Rocha, Rob Wood, Bill Bridge, Sean O’Connor and our new interim secretary Al Waters. These are all volunteers pouring a tremendous amount of positive energy into OUR organization!

Happy Fourth of July fellow Argonauts.

On this holiday I feel it is an ideal time to express my appreciation to ALL members that make our hobby and recreation possible at “Our Pond”. This includes every member.. You all count.  A huge THANK YOU for you participation!

For those who are still in dry dock, now is the time to dust off the rigs and start becoming active again. Our Santa Barbara fleet is looking for more boats and invite all inactive sailors back. ODOM’s and Soling 50’s are also always looking for more competitive fleets. It’s time to join in on the fun!

It is said that “It Takes a Village”.  Now is a good time to get involved. Just for the love of our hobby and camaraderie. It’s not just about winning a race. It’s about success as a group. It’s time to pull together and make Race-Week a huge success!  For those whose have not registered for their perspective fleet, time is running short.

July 3-Races Highlights

Thank You Ken Campbell for another informative Racing Rules Clinic. These seminars can provide useful information and help us all become better sailors. One of the topics of discussions was calling for room with port/starboard boat situations and obstructions. I think he has a crystal ball..

Fred Rocha once again set a fun course with predominant southwest to west winds averaging 8-9mph. Fred also served as RD extraordinaire!! Our hats are off for VC of Sail!

Soling 50’s sailed a 6 race series with just a small handful of on the water fouls. Two discrepancies were heard by protest committee Rogers 3 & Rogers 2+1 . I think it is always easier and kinder to the scoresheet to clear infractions on the water.

2 S/B’s and ODOM’s with a delayed start, shared the course for a six race series. Nice Sailing.

Thank You Kim Robbins and Jeff Fletcher for assisting Fred Rocha with equipment cleanup and storage .. The lock was checked twice!

Five bodies found inside superyacht that sank off Sicily

PORTICELLO, Sicily — Divers recovered four bodies Wednesday from inside a superyacht that sank in a sudden storm off Sicily , Salvatore Cocina, director of the island's Civil Protection Agency, confirmed to NBC News.

Cocina later confirmed to Sky News that a fifth body had been found and was being brought to shore. One passenger remains missing.

The identities of the bodies were not immediately released. Their recovery follows a dayslong search in the deep waters off Italy where British tech tycoon Mike Lynch  and several others were believed to be trapped in the hull. Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived.

The rest had been missing since early Monday, when the Bayesian was caught in the storm anchored off the coast of Porticello, a village near the Sicilian capital city, Palermo.

The body of the ship’s cook, identified as Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan national, was recovered Monday. 

On Wednesday, NBC News witnessed what appeared to be at least three body bags being lifted from fire department boats after they pulled into port at Porticello. It was unclear whose bodies they were. Some were later transferred to ambulances and driven away from the dock.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda, are also missing. 

The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was among the survivors rescued by a nearby vessel after they got into a lifeboat.

Built by the Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered yacht could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist boating sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.  

Regularly described in U.K. media as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” Lynch was  acquitted of fraud by a San Francisco jury this year, stemming from the sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011.

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who brought Bloomer, who testified in his defense, and Morvillo, one of his U.S. lawyers, on the trip.

Lynch's co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain was not aboard the Bayesian, but in what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a  car struck and killed  him Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.

Our Origin:

Will Lesh is the founder, designer, and owner of Tippecanoe Boats. Will grew up with a classic Jacrim Seaworthy model sailing yacht which he sailed for many summers on Lake Tippecanoe along with his sister who also had a beautiful Keystone pond yacht.

Captain of doomed superyacht is very good sailor, says brother

James Cutfield, 51, was on Bayesian, Mike Lynch’s yacht, when it went down in fierce storm off Porticello, near Palermo

The captain of Mike Lynch’s superyacht, which sank off the coast of Sicily in the early hours of Monday morning, is a “very good sailor”, his brother has said.

James Cutfield, 51, was on Bayesian, the British tech tycoon’s yacht, when it went down in a fierce storm off Porticello, near Palermo.

Mr Lynch, 59, and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, are among the seven passengers and crew feared to have died in the sinking.

Gale force winds and waterspouts are believed to have struck the 183ft superyacht , which had 22 people on board, at around 4am local time.

Mr Cutfield, originally from North Shore, Auckland, New Zealand, was described as a “well-respected” lifelong seafarer by his brother Mark.

He said Mr Cutfield had captained luxury yachts for the past eight years, had worked on them since he was a teenager and was a “very good sailor”.

Mark Cutfield told The New Zealand Herald that his brother was currently recovering in hospital, but that his injuries were not “too dramatic”. He said: “He’s safe, he’s OK.”

Discussing the storm that hit the yacht, the captain reportedly told Italian media : “We didn’t see it coming.”

On hearing the news, his wife left their home in Palma, Mallorca, to be with her husband in Italy. They married last year, with members of his family flying from New Zealand to join the celebrations.

Earlier, a former chief stewardess of the Bayesian said she was surprised to hear of the sinking because the boat had previously withstood choppy seas.

Monica Jensen, 48, told The Telegraph: “It seems a bit strange. We have been in bad weather with it, crossed the Atlantic. It’s been all over. These things definitely don’t happen very often.”

Ms Jensen worked on the superyacht from November 2018 to October 2020.

This is an Online Directory of Model Boat Ponds for North America <<_LINK_>> After a discussion on IW, some of us have setup a Pond and Lake Directory using Google Maps. It is open to the public and has the “Open Collaboration” feature enabled allowing everyone to add in pond locations. This is an attempt to bring our community closer together so PLEASE add in your ponds. Try to include the following information when adding a model boat pond: Name and description of lake Running times Accessibility Directions Contact person(s) Club affiliation (if any). Club website.(if any) Types of power systems allowed. How to add a location Follow the link. LINK Click the "Sign In" link in the upper right corner of Google Maps to sign in to Google if you are not already signed in. Once you have signed into Google you will see a red "Edit" button on the left. Click it. 3 icons will then appear on the map. Click the "Push Pin" icon and place it on the map where your pond is. After placing the Push Pin on the map a Text Box will appear where you can add information about the pond location, contact person, club website, directions, power systems allowed, etc.

Have either of you guys added a pond yet? I want to test the collaboration feature to make sure it is working correctly. It's really easy to add a pond. Give it a try and report your results.

Cool. After 3 days we have 44 ponds on the map now with 736 views. The map now comes up in Google searches. States with no Pond locations include: Colorado Oregon Arizona Nevada Georgia Virginia N. Carolina Maryland

For those of you who want to add additional details to your pond locations… You can draw shapes with text on the map depicting things like parking, easy up locations, bathrooms, food tent, spectator areas, etc. Check out the Badger Model Boat Club, in Wisconsin. It is 2nd on the list in the left hand frame. I added some of these things to it… even a menu for our Food tent. Link to map

Well, the "Find a Model Boat Pond" site has been out there for a year now and has had 423,047 views so far. Pretty good! For those of you who haven't checked it in a while, you might want to make sure that your pond location wasn't moved by accident. Unfortunately, someone else can move your Push pin by accident if they are not careful when editing.

At 'Britannia Pond Yachts' we want to help preserve and promote the pastime of sailing pond yachts for future generations to come. By designing our own range of free sailing wooden model boats, we have incorporated the qualities and form of vintage model sailing yachts in every single one of our completed model boats. We first design our model yachts using our own hand drawn plans, the hull shapes are transferred onto timber blanks which are then carefully hand carved using traditional tools, methods, and materials. In this way we can optimise a yachts smooth sleek lines and extract the very best sailing performance from our wooden model yachts. The grace of billowing sails, the style and lines of model sailing boats from an age gone by, is evident from every little detail that has been carefully considered to provide you with the most beautiful model sailing boat that we can build.

We are also able to supply a large range of classic, vintage model boats and antique Pond Yachts from manufacturers like the famous Star Yachts of Birkenhead, Bowman, Skipper, Suggs, Ailsa, Gamages, Alexander and many others. Some of these sailing boats we restore to sailing condition, we also offer other vintage model yachts for restoration by yourself. Our stock is constantly changing please visit our shop to see our latest stock of vintage model yachts. If we do not list what you are looking for please ask, as we may be able to find it or you. From time to time to are also able to supply highly collectable Victorian and Edwardian Cutters. So if it is a gaff rigged cutter a topsail clipper bowed schooner, or a toy yacht or a toy boat that is suitable for a child, or a racing yacht or a gaff rigged antique cruiser for you then please enquire.

Model Yacht Pond

Castle Emplacement

A 10 minute walk away from central St. Peter Port, the Model Yacht Pond is found on the Castle Emplacement beside Castle Cornet, and is perfect for model boat and yacht sailing or racing, as well as being used by The Guernsey Sailing Trust for beginners' sailing lessons.

The Guernsey Yacht Club offer drop-in sailing sessions in the summer holidays - those aged 5 and over can just turn up on Saturday mornings! Register, pay and off you sail. Sessions are run on a first come first serve basis, so get there early to avoid disappointment! Inexperienced and beginner sailors are welcome.
