RYA Catamaran Training

Rya catamaran training in greece with ionianmode- rya competent crew / rya day skipper, private catamaran training from: €6.580,00, about the catamaran course .

  • Most suitable courses for Catamaran owners or future Catamaran owners.
  • Generally learning how to sail should be done on a monohull sailboat. The feeling of sailing, the amount a sailboat heels over depending on your actions/reefing, the thrill is so much different on a monohull.
  • On the other side a catamaran is spacier, doesn’t heel, and has two engines so even if sailing principles of course are the same there are minor differences and if you are a catamaran owner you can gain catamaran-specific experience with those two courses.

About The RYA Competent Crew course

The RYA Catamaran Training on Competent Crew course is ideal for beginners. It’s the ideal course for those who want to be active crew members and not just passengers and for those who want to learn the basics and gain experience to move to the next step.

  • The tuition yachts are ready for accommodation by Saturday afternoon.
  • On day one you will join the yacht and you will meet your instructor. Upon arrival, you will be briefed by your instructor about the basics regards the yacht and the surroundings. Once everyone has arrived we will have the chance to discuss the course and the plan for the week. In the case of a mixed group Day Skipper candidates will have the chance to revise the theory and the competent crew candidates to familiarise themselves with the yacht and her equipment.
  • The course starts on Sunday morning from our base in Lefkas (Lefkas port) and finishes on Thursday afternoon. We have a fun morning on Friday and around noon we return to our base.
  • During your training, you will sail a minimum distance of 100NM around the islands of the Ionian and you will visit the most interesting and beautiful ports of the area.
  • On our daily routine, we will have lunch and swim stops in one of the most idyllic bays of the Ionian islands and we will spend the night in a different destination at a time, where you will have the chance to explore the local culture and cuisine of Lefkada, Kefalonia, and Ithaca.
  • By Saturday 09.00 we will have to leave the yachts for our base crew to get her ready for the next group.

During the course, you will learn how to steer, handle sails, tie knots, keep a lookout at sea, and row a dinghy. You will learn how to react in emergencies and how to participate in the day-to-day duties of the yacht as a confident crew member. You will have the chance to experience some night sail and to assist on a longer passage. By the end of the course, you will be familiar with the yacht her sails, and her equipment.

About the RYA Day Skipper course

At the end of this course, you will be able to skipper a yacht in short passages. During the week you will prepare passage plans, you will navigate, you will organise a night sail and you will be in charge at times to gain experience as a skipper.

About the RYA Day Skipper Certificate

The RYA Day Skipper certificate is the minimum accepted certificate by most authorities worldwide to charter a yacht. In addition, the holders of an RYA Day Skipper certificate can apply to the RYA for an ICC ( International Certificate of Competence ) which is an internationally recognized qualification.

The participants of the RYA Skipper practical course are expected to have the required level of theory knowledge ( Day Skipper theory level ). This 6-day practical course includes lots of navigation, chart work, and sailing and therefore there is not enough time for the instructor to teach theory from scratch. Your instructor though will coach and guide you in order to fill any gaps you have in theory and navigation.

Next Steps After the RYA Catamaran Training

After the RYA Catamaran Training course, you will be given an individual full debrief from your instructor who will advise you on the next steps.

Usually the next step after the Competent Crew course is the Day Skipper theory course followed by the Day Skipper practical course.

The Day Skipper course is the first training course you can attend to skipper a yacht. Expanding your knowledge and gaining experience in the world of yachting is a nonstop procedure. After you have gained adequate experience as a Day Skipper the next step is usually the RYA Coastal Skipper course which is the stepping stone for attending a Yachtmaster Coastal or offshore preparation and exam to gain your professional qualifications.

Athens Sailing Academy is an English sailing school Greece teaching sailing in Greece, and offering sailing school holidays.  Athens Sailing Academy Greece is the oldest ASA sailing school in Europe. The school was founded in 2005 and we have been a sailing school in Greece since. We teach in the Saronic Gulf/Cyclades Islands because both offer excellent sailing conditions. The weather can vary from a placid force 3, more importantly to a much more exciting force 6. Sea and wave conditions are placid and not often rough. It’s always sunny and the water temperature in the mid-summer is very warm. All this makes the need for fleeces and wet weather gear redundant. The islands and ports that we visit are typically Greek and un-spoilt, where you will meet many interesting characters. You will find many deserted coves and bays where few yachts go.

SAILING SCHOOL LICENSES.

The Athens Sailing School offers novice and experienced sailors, the opportunity to advance their sailing skills. Our unique courses are all one week trips, that can be Private or Group style. Once you pass your course it will certify you for an Internationally accepted skipper license. With this license you can charter your own ‘ Bareboat Yacht ‘ from any of the major yacht charter companies. The ASA license is internationally recognized all over the World. From the USA to Europe also Asia as well as Australia.

For the more advanced sailors who want to experience long sailing trips and learn more sailing skills, such as watch keeping and night sailing, we offer our 10 day mile building trips . These cruises are designed for the more adventurous in mind.

PRIVATE TUITION.

The Athens sailing school Greece offers “ PRIVATE TUITION ” with one of our qualified instructors. A couple can take “ PRIVATE ” courses for a week. This gives you a more personnel teaching environment and the opportunity to progress at your own speed.  Families can also enjoy private sailing classes, bring your children young and teens and enjoy sailing together while qualifying for your Skippers License. Sailors who have passed their Skippers license can also progress through the higher ASA classes because the sailing school offers  ASA 105  and  ASA 106  to Coastal Skipper level.

Student testimonials

Carl is an experienced and very knowledgeable instructor and we learnt a great deal more than we anticipated, given our previous knowledge of being at sea on ships etc. john colling (uk).

I can’t imagine it could be better. Everything was great!!

  Alexandru Oancea (Romania):

Fantastic week finally doing a course that I had wanted to do for the last twenty five years but somehow never got around to. Superb location, fantastic yacht, in conjunction with an articulate, skilful, positive, calm and knowledgeable Skipper namely Carl Derham. My wife and I are both in our early 50’s and enjoyed RYA Competent Crew under the tutelage of Carl immensely, we are already considering when we can return to progress to RYA Day Skipper Stefan Jenkins (Scotland)

Weather Icon for winds and other weather conditions for the flotilla

Weather & Sailing Conditions

Reliable weather in the Ionian makes this a hugely popular sailing destination, with temperatures ranging from the low 20s in the early/late season up to the mid-30s in July and August. Sailing conditions are generally moderate with winds typically force 2-5, and a largely protected body of water to explore. More open-water sailing is available to the north or further south.

The winds tend to be light in the mornings, giving excellent opportunities to practice boat handling. By mid-afternoon, the wind builds providing pleasant sailing conditions. There are numerous locations with stronger gusts to demonstrate more advanced sailing skills safely.

RYA Competent Crew

A perfect introduction to sailing and chance to learn to sail in greece.

Our RYA Competent Crew course is ideal for: dinghy sailors, those completely new to sailing or anyone who has already done some crewing but would like to learn a little more!

You will learn all the skills required to be a useful crew member aboard a yacht anywhere in the world. We will also incorporate some extras into your training and you will be helping to moor and navigating the boat each day.

This means you will come away from a fantastic and informative sailing holiday in the beautiful surroundings of the Greek Ionian Islands, with a wealth of knowledge that will serve as a solid foundation for any further sailing you chose to do.

What to expect from Competent Crew

Busy but fun days – we have a large syllabus to get through so setting off by 9am is key, that means getting up early to have breakfast and preparing the boat for sea

Limited swim stops – although there will be times for a quick dip, you must remember you are on a course and we have limited time to get you through the syllabus. We don’t allow kayaks or paddleboards on courses as they get in the way when training.

Provisioning – we recommend students to start a kitty between themselves at the beginning of the week, please remember the students are to provide food and water for your skipper during the course. We recommend provisioning the boat between you all for eating breakfast and lunch onboard, then plan on heading to a taverna in the evenings with maybe one evening meal being cooked aboard

Cabin arrangements – obviously there is a limited number of cabins, 2 or 3 on the training boats. Cabins are sold first come first served, with one cabin always reserved for our instructors. Please speak to the office when booking to see cabin availability

Your yacht will be in great condition and fully MCA coded for learn to sail training.

NOTE – all our RYA courses are taught in English.
