  • Description

Specifications

A new spirit and new concept, the Sense ('43) breaks the rules and reinvents the spirit of yachting.  The sea is seen from a different angle; no longer is the vessel designed as a sailing space alone but as a living space in its own right. Sailing and anchoring become complementary. They express a new lifestyle that gives more than its fair share to comfort and well being, without neglecting safety and performance. Immediately, the joy of living aboard becomes second nature and the simplicity of sailing a basic principle. Feel like a bit of freedom, new discoveries, and pleasurable encounters? It's time to cast off!

Beneteau 43

Beneteau 43 is a 43 ′ 0 ″ / 13.1 m monohull sailboat designed by Berret-Racoupeau and built by Beneteau starting in 2006.

Drawing of Beneteau 43

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The Best of all Worlds

Sport crossover boat.

The Formula 430 All Sport Crossover is the latest of the revolutionary 430 Super Sport Crossover. True to the Formula Crossover mission of providing a platform where boaters truly can have the best of all worlds, the 430 ASC is an unprecedented fusion of dayboat versatility, overnight capabilities and sporting accommodations, where playing hard no longer means hard work or compromise for anyone aboard. At 43’ in length with a 12’ beam, the 430 ASC retains all of the SSC’s comfort amenities forward with a generous shot of offshore adventure aft.

OUR NEW CABIN CRUISER

Forget what you previously expected from a performance boat, because the 430 ASC offers more than you could possibly hope for. Designed by Formula’s exclusive designer, the legendary John Adams, the 430 ASC delivers on every front imaginable.

Here are just of few of the powerboat’s highlights:

PERFECT BOAT FOR ENTERTAINING

Do you want a boat that’s perfect for entertaining? You and your guests will enjoy flexible seating; 32 drink holders; a transitional forward-facing, triple-wide lounge; and a waterproof stereo. Two Three electronically controlled tables make dining and sunning a breeze. Eight dual USB charging ports will keep you and your guests connected throughout the festivities.

A generously sized swim platform only adds to the fun. It caused Simon Murray, managing editor of Power & Motoryacht Magazine, to proclaim, “So much space back here.” Blue-white LED lighting added to the available underwater blue lights is perfect for setting the mood for romance or adventure after daylight hours.

The 430 ASC’s chef-inspired kitchen enables you to dazzle your guests with your culinary masterpieces. Whether you’re preparing simple appetizers and snacks or a five-star, multicourse meal, you’ll enjoy every moment you spend in your onboard, well-appointed kitchen.

If you’re planning fun-filled activities on or off the water, the 430 ASC is ready for whatever you have planned. The 430 ASC has a convenient paddle board rack that easily converts to a bike rack.

EXHILARATING COCKPIT AND AMPLE ACCOMMODATIONS

When you step into the cockpit of the 430 ASC, you’ll know without a doubt that the boat deserves the top spot among the world’s best performance fishing boats. Boasting triple command seating with lumbar support in three positions, dual Axiom Pro 12S GPS widescreen color chartplotters, Mercury DTS with SmartCraft VesselView, liquid black panels with waterproof rocker switches and much, much more, the cockpit is the place where new and seasoned captains will want to be.

While many performance fishing boats compromise overnight comfort to free up space for activities other than sleeping, the 430 ASC proves this isn’t necessary. When you step aboard the 430 ASC, you’ll see why Simon Murray describes the 430 ASC’s accommodations as “more than ample.” You’ll be eager to head out for overnight adventure in your new Formula performance boat.

IDEAL FOR CATCHING, STORING AND PREPARING THE BIG ONE

Whether you’re a true sports fisherman or woman or you enjoy recreational fishing from time to time, you’ll appreciate how well-equipped the 430 ASC is for catching, storing and preparing whatever you catch during your time on the water. Made with fun, exhilaration and fishability in mind, here are some of the features avid and leisure fishermen and women will truly appreciate aboard the 430 ASC:

GRILL WITH SPLASH GUARD:

If you want to grill where you catch, you’ll love the 430 ASC’s outdoor grill located in the boat’s primary fishing area. This conveniently located grill has a splash guard that will protect your upholstery while you use your outdoor grill.

TEMPERATURE-CONTROLLED FISH BOX:

Located under the aft port side seating, the boat’s temperature-controlled, refrigerated fish box is perfect for storing the catch of the day and keeping your drinks at the perfect temperature.

Forever versatile, the Formula 430 ASC has a livewell that can accommodate up to four dive tanks with ease. The livewell has an aquarium-sized, midlevel window, which makes it easy to keep an eye on your live bait if you keep some on hand.

SINK AND PAPER TOWEL HOLDER:

A smartly placed freshwater sink and paper towel holder make cleaning up after cleaning a fish a cinch without you having to miss any of the action.

CUTTING BOARD:

To the right of the sink, you’ll find a concealed cutting board. The cutting board makes it easy and comfortable to take a fish right from the hook, filet it and toss the head and guts overboard. The cutting board’s cover has a fiddle, which will prevent your tackle boxes from sliding overboard as you prepare to cast again.

CLEVER STORAGE SPACE FOR TACKLE:

You’ll discover clever storage space for tackle located in the cabinet below your cutting board. This space can accommodate multiple tackle boxes of varying sizes.

As one of the world’s best performance fishing boats, the Formula 430 ASC has plenty more to offer. To learn about this boat’s long list of additional standard and available features, we encourage you to review the Features page now.

Ultimate Offshore Entertainment

Man and woman on 430 ASC with scuba diving equipment

In addition to diving tank storage and a dedicated fish prep station, the Formula 430 All Sport Crossover features an aft-facing double wide seat that transforms into a swim platform. You can also access the water from the spacious extended swim platform, complete with a convenient T-ladder and no hull-side entry required. The extended space provides 50 square feet of room to rinse off or towel dry, then quickly changes back into living space when you’re done.

Take it all in from the comfort of stitched cockpit seating with recessed lumbar support while you listen to music through waterproof JL Audio speaker control. You’ll find 25 total polished cup holders scattered aboard, so you can relax wherever the view takes you. Modern blue-white LED lights fill every zone, and optional underwater blue lights add after-dark fun. Choose the “sound-to-light” upgrade to get Wi-Fi controllable LED lights with multiple colors that you can sync to your playlist to create your own underwater light show.

Fully Residential Cabin

We designed the Formula All Sport Crossover with a fully residential cabin that doesn’t make you choose between spacious living quarters and a usable layout. Instead of traditionally narrow confines, you get all the comforts of home, like a stateroom bed, convertible dinette and sleeping berth with a full galley.

LOUNGE AND DINE

You don’t have to head to the cabin to prepare your meals aboard the Formula 430, thanks to the chef-inspired outdoor kitchen. The outdoor kitchen features a large Corian countertop for prep work, a molded sink with a glide-away cover, a faucet, trash container and paper towel holder. Store ingredients in the stainless Isotherm pullout fridge and stash tools in the StarBoard® drawers. We’ve even included a Cuisinart® blender and pantry storage, so you can keep the ingredients you need for tropical smoothies and drinks at the ready. Cook your meals on the 240-volt electric grill, and you’re all set for dinner and a view.

When you’re not enjoying open-air dining, the full galley indoors has everything you need for every meal of the day. Enter the cabin through the portside door at the helm and descend three solid wood steps to the molded cabin with wood-grain flooring. The area is spacious, with 6 feet and 6 inches of headroom and windows that bring natural light.

The starboard side’s kitchen has wood-grain finishes and Corian countertops, accented by the same modern LED lighting. Galley features include a molded sink, folding swivel spout and gliding cover. Cook in an overhead microwave or tucked-away electric stove that you can easily reverse into a cutting board. The pullout stainless steel Vitrifrigo refrigerator is large enough to keep everything cold. Optional upgrades include a Keurig® coffee machine and trash can.

You can store everything you need in hardwood dovetail drawers that use a silent, automatic enclosure, overhead cupboard space, cedar-lined hanging lockers and a one-of-a-kind storage compartment hidden under the counter.

Main cabin of the 430 ASC

Dine with loved ones at the U-shaped Ultraleather lounge with high-gloss wooden table and cup holders. With the flip of a switch, the area transforms into a bed. You can get more legroom by raising the backrest forward. The dining lounge also features dual USB charging ports, easy access to the LED-accented showcase with tempered stemware and drink tumblers and a secure compartment to store wine bottles. You can enjoy a movie while you dine, too, on the 32-inch LED/LCD HDTV with a soundbar and Blu-ray™ player. There are four speakers with LED lighting throughout the cabin.

Control electronics, including the Rockford Fosgate stereo, air conditioner and lights and the electronics pylon, and charge your provided iPad at the LaunchPort. The digital switching on the pylon controls everything and relays important chartplotter and engine information.

STATEROOM SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS

Enjoy comfort in the stateroom with a privacy curtain that creates your own relaxation space. The permanent queen bed is made from comfortable memory foam and an upholstered headboard with hidden storage for convenience. Pillow shams, a LaunchPort charging system, dual USB charging ports and deep storage at the bottom of the bed are all included. The stateroom also boasts a second 32-inch LED/LCD HDTV with a soundbar and Blu-ray player.

You’ll sleep and dine even better with Dometic Breathe Easy air filtration technology, now standard on cabin air conditioning-equipped Formula boats.

The permanent queen bed is made from comfortable memory foam and an upholstered headboard with hidden storage for convenience.

INSIDE THE HEAD

The private head has a molded vanity with Corian countertops, a wall-mounted faucet and a stand-up shower area with a Corian seat, accented by the high-gloss wood-grain cabinetry. The head unit comes complete with Vacuflush technology for easy sanitation.

Best Midsize Cruiser 40-44 Feet

  • By Herb McCormick
  • Updated: December 12, 2017

Elan gt5

Winner: Elan GT5

This is going to be a tough category,” said Bill Bolin of the Best Midsize Cruiser 40 to 44 Feet division. “We have three very different but very good boats in this class — the Elan GT5, the Hallberg-Rassy 412 and the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 440.”

To begin, Bolin said of the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 440, “It’s the best Jeanneau I’ve ever seen.” The judging panel agreed, crowning the boat the fleet’s Most Innovative design for 2018.

And what, exactly, led to that designation? “One big reason is the side decks,” said Tim Murphy. “One of the design features is wide-open side decks all the way aft” that permit easy egress going forward without the need to scramble over cockpit coamings. “It’s a clean path ahead,” he noted. Imitation being the sincerest form of flattery, it’s something we expect to see on more boats, including a scaled-up Jeanneau 490, in the very near future.

“You go down below and, maybe for the first time, Jeanneau has separated the mast compression post from the main bulkhead,” he added. “Now there’s just a compression post that runs down into the main saloon, and the main bulkhead that would’ve come to that position is now several feet forward. So they’ve opened up more space in the main cabin and taken it away from the forward cabin, where they’re arguing you don’t need it quite as much. I think that’s also a fine change. It has twin rudders, and under sail, I thought the helm was beautiful. It’s a solid boat.”

jeanneau sun odyssey 440

So, too, thought Bolin, was the Hallberg-Rassy 412. “This is the largest aft-cockpit model Hallberg-Rassy has built,” he said. “There is a 40-foot center-cockpit model, but this is a different hull entirely, optimized for upwind performance, with a code zero sail for downwind work. There’s a retractable bow thruster — we saw a lot of those this year — to reduce drag and get the thruster deeper in the water and farther forward as well. The boat we inspected had upgraded sails, and when we went sailing, they were spectacular. There was a beautiful full-battened sail and the boat sailed very well.

“It had a slippery hull and moved nicely,” he added. “We sailed it in 12 to 14 knots of breeze, so there was decent wind. Most of the time we were making 6.5 to 7 knots. As we fell off on a beam and then a broad reach, I think this was the first boat where we didn’t see a drastic drop in speed. It performed well on all points of sail. It had a nice big wheel and great visibility forward. It would be an easy boat to singlehand. I really like it.”

“This is a mainsail-driven boat, and I think that might explain why it’s so peppy off the wind,” said Murphy. “So the sail plan is a small jib with a big main. They’re one of the few remaining builders that are giving us a true traveler but also genoa sheet-lead controls from the cockpit, showing that they’re concerned about sail shape, and rightly so. Going down below, it’s the classic Hallberg-Rassy mahogany interior, and it’s just lovely, as lovely as it ever was. We’ve talked about good handholds, but on this boat, they weren’t just good, they were also beautiful. The fiddles are these beautiful rounded shapes that are perfect for your hand. They look great and feel great. Very nice.”

That left the Slovenian-built, 43-foot-4-inch Elan GT5. The company builds dedicated lines of racing and cruising boats, but, said Murphy, “The GT5 is sort of a hybrid between those two lines. It has a high-performance hull and a very comfortable cruising interior.

Hallberg-Rassy 412

“Sailing it was pretty joyful,” he continued. “We sailed in very light air and it was still moving very nicely. It looked really good on the water. It really seemed to have answered the performance side of Elan’s DNA.”

“The company is doing some progressive things in terms of systems,” said Ed Sherman. “The electrical system on the boat has a nice, graphically designed power distribution panel with push buttons that light up things to let you know, for instance, that the running lights are on and that sort of thing.”

“I was really taken with this boat,” said Bolin. “It looks like a race boat from a distance, and as Tim mentioned, its DNA is rooted in that. But you go below and it’s very unique, with lots of special features. I like the galley-forward arrangement a lot. You come down into the main cabin and you’ve got max beam where the living quarters are, you have a great sense of entry. Figuratively speaking, you’re not walking through the back door and the kitchen to get into the house. I think this layout makes very good use of space. And there’s lots of storage. Finally, I’d say it’s a high-tech boat, vacuum-bagged with 100 percent vinylester. There’s a lot to like about it.”

At the end of the day, Bolin’s colleagues agreed, which is why they chose the Elan GT5 as the Best Midsize Cruiser 40 to 44 Feet.

This Dolphin 430, owned until 2021 by a retired international commercial airline pilot, is in amazing condition for a yacht of her vintage.  She has used for here entire life for sailing to the Bahamas.

Always maintained to top standards.  She is the same hull and tooling as the popular Dolphin 460, the famous Brazilian built catamaran that has many circumnavigations in the design's history.

Big daggerboards, carbon mast, all foam core hulls, vinylester resin, she is a top flight build crafted by legendary boat builder Philippe Pouvreau, a third generation French builder who set up his factory in Brazil. Philippe continues to build custom cats in Brazil.

The Dolphin production ceased in 2009 due to the global financial crisis, but the 24 that were built are sailing all over the world and they are cherished by their owners for their optimum performance, great craftsmanship, and robust construction.
