Welcome to our new Mirage Owners Club This is a website dedicated to sharing information about the Mirage 5.5 and 236 sailboats built in Gainesville Florida in the 1970's and 1980's.

This site is the second evolution of the Mirage Owners Club. The original, started in 2001, was a Yahoo Group site. When Yahoo closed all its groups we moved the content to this groups.io site. We’ve been collecting information, photos and posts related to Mirage 5.5 and Mirage 236 sailboats now for almost 20 years!

Here’s a little history of the group… In 1990 a few owners of Mirage 5.5's created an informal email list to share information,  experiences, hints and questions about our boats.  One of those folks went by the handle of "BaronMarsh", from Texas, and he created our original Yahoo Group in 2001. Sadly, BaronMarsh is no longer with us, but his Mirage group remains.

About our site This group is unique. It’s an incredibly generous, thoughtful and helpful group.

For members who are new here, there's a HUGE amount of info on this site for both Mirage 5.5's and the Mirage 236 sailboats. Check it out, and be sure to check the "Database" and input your hull info etc... maybe you'll see your boat listed under a previous owner. The site offers a searchable list of posts including questions, answers, photo's and step-by-step guides compiled by owners since 1990—all focussed on the Mirage sailboats built in Gainesville Florida. Share your stories about your boat. Ask questions about these boats, or sailing in general. Post photos of your boat or projects as well. Lastly, thank you to each and every one of you for being part of this site. It's great to have a connection with other Mirage owners and compare notes!

Review of Mirage 5.5

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The Mirage 5.5 is equipped with a swing keel. A swing keel is a pivoting lifting keel, allowing to sail both coastal and inland waters.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.41 - 0.51 meter (1.35 - 1.65 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Mirage 5.5 is 3.01, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 5.6 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Mirage 5.5 is about 86 kg/cm, alternatively 483 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 86 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 483 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 26.93

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 16m 2 (172 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

UsageLengthDiameter
Jib sheet 6.1 m(20.0 feet)8 mm(5/16 inch)
Genoa sheet6.1 m(20.0 feet)8 mm(5/16 inch)
Mainsheet 15.2 m(50.0 feet)8 mm(5/16 inch)

This section is reserved boat owner's modifications, improvements, etc. Here you might find (or contribute with) inspiration for your boat.

Do you have changes/improvements you would like to share? Upload a photo and describe what you have done.

We are always looking for new photos. If you can contribute with photos for Mirage 5.5 it would be a great help.

Opinions on a Mirage 5.5 (20')

  • Add to quote

I'm looking for my first boat. I am a novice sailer. Did most of my sailing as a scout and some catamaran sailing in the Caribbean. I want a trailer sailer that's not too expensive and will work on the Chesapeake Bay/James River area. There is a Mirage 5.5 on CL for a little while now (which is what had me worried) It's been stripped down. Needs paint and to be essentially put back together. The boat comes with everything to put it back together, a working 6hp Edinrude and a trailer. Guy wants $800 for the whole thing. I don't mind painting and putting it back together. But is it worth it? I appreciate anyone's input. Here's a link to the ad: norfolk.craigslist.org/boa/5760304106.html

I have had my Mirage 5.5m for many years now. Not a bad boat, but it has it's drawbacks. The keel is iron, rusting is always a big issue, especially in salt water. It is not a very big keel, so going upwind you will be making a lot of leeway. It is not a very heavy keel either so stability can be an issue when heeling. Don't push it. The boat will pound like heck in heavy chop. Install better companionway boards because there is not much to stop the water in the cockpit from entering the cabin (very low sill). I have camped on mine for week or two on Pamlico Sound. Cramped but I don't mind. Great boat to explore shallow waters. Fast and responsive. $800 is a great deal IMO.

I have just bought a mirage 5.5...i need to find a mast or new sail plan altogether

mirage 5.5 sailboat data

5.5 was my first boat. I pretty much ditto what krisscross said.

I know this is an old thread, but did you buy this boat, and do you still have it? Because I just got a mirage 5.5 from a friend in Virginia who got it from another guy, and given some of the dings and nicks in the photo, I'd swear it's the same boat.

Update, for whatever it's worth... after further research, I'm certain I now own this boat. It's currently wintering in Illinois while I give it a makeover... just finished adding a locker up front for the anchor rode, now working on wiring for new lights.

Some photos. Haven't splashed it yet. Will be going to pick up mast and boom this weekend hopefully.

Looking great!

mirage 5.5 sailboat data

My first boat was a Mirage 5.5 and I loved it. It is very responsive and under spinnaker it just flys. Took a lot of folks out on it for their first sailing experience and it always impressed. The only issue I had with it was that the keel got a bit sloppy in its fittings. Not bad, but not perfect. Other than that, a great boat that my daughters and I learned the ropes on. I moved on to a 1992 Catalina 30 after that and missed the Lamborghini feeling of the Mirage.

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Yeah I know they don't look super exciting, but imagine if there was one for a good price not too far away. Looks easy to own as far as trailering and storage are concerned. Would it be ok for low level beer can racing, putting around, maybe occasional overnights. I'm sure there are better boats out there, but this is close and is complete and fairly cheap. Do they sail OK ? Rate OK ? Build well enough not to fall to pieces ? Overall, better than not having a boat at all ?

  • Thread starter

Are you being sarcastic ? I'm not sure, chicks already dig me though.

Super Anarchist

Pretty slow, rates 230ish in PHRF. Since a decent miniton (Lindenburg22) can be bought pretty cheaply, a Mirage 5.5 is worth barely more than the value of the trailer. If it's dirt cheap, has usable sails, needs minimal work, then go for it...you'll have fun. Not worth sink inking much labor or money into though...you'll never get any of it back.

There is a Yahoo group for the Mirage 5.5. It is https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/mirageownersclub/info You will get more informed and less sarcastic inputs there. I bought one a few years ago to speculate on, then sold it before finishing it. There were some interesting things about it. Sort of a mini Mirage 236. The build quality wasn't too bad, but not a big water boat, in my opinion. If you buy one, PM me. I had some ideas that you may want to consider.

  • Apr 18, 2016

Thanks all, According to to seller, boat is complete and ready to go, pics seem to confirm this, i.e. they show trailer and engine. He says everything else is there and ready to go. Which seems rare in the sub 2k category. I'm sure there are better boats, I would really like a Holder 20, but they seem to go for more $$$, venture 21's are PHRF bandits, Min tons tend to be, heavier around 2,000 lbs. But the huge difference is that this thing is for sale, now, within 2 hrs of my house. I think it's all well and good looking for other deals, but distance seems to be a huge factor, you could point out the holder 20 in NYC with no trailer, or one in Philly with one. I don't have time to screw with that, especially if the boat turns out to be a POS. Has to be a 1 day round trip. The ask is $1800, lets assume $1500 would get it. It's within a day round trip, seller is responsive. Assuming the sails are useable and the motor runs, I don't see a lot not to like. But yeah, I fully agree, if it needs significant work or money I will be passing.

Schnick

I think the Macgregor / Venture 21 is probably a better boat, very similar in towing requirements and faster under sail.

  • Apr 19, 2016

Probably, but all I've seem locally is jokers trying to get $2k+ for projects with major parts missing.

DennisY

don' t think you've said but where is locally?

I'm in Savannah GA, it's in Jacksonville fla. 2 hrs.

RobbieB

When you get it you should take it up to BYSC in Beaufort and play with their PHRF fleet. They have a real mixed bag of boats, but everyone plays nice and has a LOT of fun. They have 2 or 3 good events every year.

I'm pretty pushed for time, but that does vindicate my thinking somewhat. Easy trailering does matter. I might do that, with a J24 probably wouldn't. For those of us with limited time and money I think the best boat is the one that easiest ownership !

Try to connect with Joey Waters of Waters Sail Loft in Columbia. He has a 5.5 that he does well with and makes the sails for. I'm sure he has some good advice.

If you do buy the boat and want to add sails, SailBoatData.com will show you that the Catalina 22 has an "I" and "J" that are almost identical. Good luck with your deal. Let us know. And if it doesn't work out for you, take another look at the Holder 20s. They are a kick ass boat! (San Juan 21 head sails are a close match for it....) It's good to see that some people are interested in and satisfied with smaller boats. You own them; they don't own you.

Tks, if get through this work week hitting my figures and not having a bunch of equipment to repair this weekend I progress to Friday night, my wife goes out of town for school, Friday 5pm to Sat 9pm, if she gets back safe and I manage to keep my baby daughter alive I am going to text the guy. If he still has it I will plan to get in the car Sunday morning.

A friend had one and rolled-it one time. Clearwater asked him not to bring it back into the gulf, bay sailing was OK though. I believe it swamped and they had a hard time getting it back through the pass.

Does anyone have a source for sails for a Mirage 5.5? I need to replace a headsail and have been told that it is the same size as for a Catalina 22 but I do not know this for a fact. I need the name of a sailmaker familiar with the boat.

Took a lot of folks out on it for their first sailing experience and it always impressed. The only issue I had with it was that the keel got a bit sloppy in its fittings.

  14. Mirage 5.5, anyone owned / sailed one.

Aug 9, 2005. 1. - - Shell Point FL. Aug 9, 2005. #1. Does anyone have a source for sails for a Mirage 5.5? I need to replace a headsail and have been told that it is the same size as for a Catalina 22 but I do not know this for a fact. I need the name of a sailmaker familiar with the boat.
