Finnish shipyard Baltic Yachts launches 33.5-metre all-carbon sailing yacht Zemi

First look: inside 34m Baltic custom sailing yacht Zemi

Baltic Yachts has offered a first look inside its 33.5-metre sailing yacht Zemi following her delivery in August.

Named after an ancient Caribbean deity, Zemi is a Baltic 110 Custom characterised by her metallic bronze hull, low-profile coach roof and teak deck that curves over the lip of the transom.

Zemi began construction last year and was commissioned by a highly experienced family with around-the-world cruising in mind. Designed by Malcolm McKeon , the sloop-rigged sailing yacht builds on the partnership between the studio and the shipyard that began with the delivery of the award-winning 34-metre Liara in 2019.

Interior design was completed by Andreas Martin-Löf as his first yacht project. Zemi features warm walnut and limestone veneers bonded to lightweight honeycomb structures. The new imagery also reveals a muted colour scheme, clean lines and warm, integrated lighting.

Among her many distinctive features, Zemi 's main cockpit can be converted into a large sun lounging area with added protection by a combined fold-down spray hood and full-length removable bimini. Details of her fold-out transom and bathing platform, which lead into a stern garage for a Williams tender, were also revealed by the yard, including McKeon's trademark wrap-over teak decking continuing onto the transom.

Other performance-oriented measures include twin rudders and a telescopic lifting keel with a 28-tonne bulb, which can reduce draught from six metres to 3.95 metres. The yacht is also the third to feature Baltic's electric propulsion system and is equipped with low-emission generators designed to meet the IMO Tier 3 emissions regulations .

In addition to her eco-credentials, Zemi features a high-voltage electrical system that allow her to operate in "silent mode" for long periods of time.

This follows the successful delivery of the 33.8-metre Baltic Custom 111, Raven , in December.

Baltic launches 110 Zemi

Two-year build period culminates in the naming and launching of the 33.5m baltic 110 zemi….

zemi yacht price

Named after an ancient Caribbean deity, 33.5m sailing yacht Zemi has been built in advanced carbon composites to a Malcolm McKeon design and is intended primarily as a performance cruising yacht for the owner’s family and friends.

Zemi is Baltic ’s 565th yacht, and was built in the company’s Bosund facility and trucked by low loader to Baltic’s waterside facility and launch site in Jakobstad, Finland, where a mobile crane then lifted it into the water.   Zemi has a metallic bronze hull, and its trademark teak deck and superstructure styling have been described as ‘classic aggressive’ by John Walker of A2B Marine Projects, the owner’s representative. It features vertical coachroof windows and a low-level superstructure along with a teak-skinned main cockpit which can be converted into a large sun lounging area protected by a combined fold-down spray hood and full-length removable bimini. The fold-out transom and bathing platform, which lead into a stern garage for a Williams tender, include McKeon’s trademark wrap-over teak decking continuing onto the transom.

The yacht has a number of headsail options including a fixed furling J1 and J2, a detachable storm jib stay, a furling Code sail tacked forward of the J1 and a variety of A sails set off the fixed bowsprit, which is integral to the hull moulding. This arrangement enables a fast ‘change of gear’ to suit weather conditions.

Interior design is by Swedish architect Andreas Martin-Löf using walnut as the predominant timber, much of it in veneer form bonded onto lightweight honeycomb structures. The weight-saving continues throughout the yacht, including in the head compartments where sink and surfaces use veneers of limestone bonded to lightweight carcasses.

Particular attention has been paid to lighting, with ‘lanterns’ of Japanese rice paper and walnut strips in the corners of the saloon and light sources mounted in panel divides along with extensive coachroof skylighting.

The yacht has a zero-emissions electric propulsion system using a 247kW Danfoss motor with direct drive to a four-bladed folding propeller, rather than a more usual controllable pitch propeller. The absence of a gearbox and the hydraulic controls required for a CPP mean the drive train has fewer parts, takes up less space and saves considerable weight.   Two 129kW gensets charge a large bank of lithium-ion batteries which in turn drive the propulsion motor and supply all domestic, hydraulic and rig-handling requirements. Hydro-generation is possible using the free-wheeling folding propeller while sailing. A telescopic lifting keel can reduce draught from 6m to 3.95m, allowing access to a range of anchorages worldwide.

Following trials this summer, Zemi will head to Norway, Svalbard, Iceland and Scotland, then on to the Canaries, followed by the Caribbean where the intention is to compete in the 2024 St Barths Bucket. A transit of the Panama Canal is also planned, with a crossing of the Pacific.

“Whenever we launch a yacht to join the Baltic family, it’s fair to say the thoughts of many members of our staff sail away with her, celebrating the conclusion of another unique build and wishing her and her owner fantastic sailing,” said Executive Vice President Henry Hawkins.

Sailing the stunning 110ft superyacht ‘Zemi’ with her designer

Malcolm Mckeon delights in the chance to race his own design Baltic 110 Zemi at the St Barths Bucket. Sam Fortescue reports

Sailors make a beeline for the tiny Caribbean island of St Barth every March to join one of the most hotly anticipated events in the superyacht racing calendar. The Bucket Regatta is legendary for its sailing and socialising, but imagine taking part on a boat you’d actually drawn yourself. Well, for the renowned yacht designer Malcolm Mckeon, this is no mere fantasy.

“I think I’ve been going to the Bucket Regatta for almost 20 years,” he told us. “Sailing conditions are ideal for racing superyachts with interesting courses around the outlying islands. For most of those Buckets, I’ve had the pleasure to race on yachts I designed. I’m quite often invited on the newly launched yachts as I’ve already built up a relationship with the client.”

This year was no exception, as Mckeon was invited back by the proud new owner of 110ft Zemi , delivered by Baltic Yachts late last summer. It was only the second outing on the racecourse for a high-performance bluewater cruiser that Mckeon had conceived with a marked turn of speed and a full carbon fibre layup. And like many of the big yachts on the Caribbean circuit, she’d participated in the Superyacht Challenge in Antigua just one week earlier.

“I’d have already been aboard for the final sail trials – so it’s not as if I haven’t been on the boat before,” says Mckeon. “Joining a client aboard their yacht after delivery is more a social thing, really. But it’s nice to see how the boats compete on the racetrack and how well they are sailed.

“You certainly get a much better feel for how the boat performs than on sail trials – I suppose the sail trials are more about making sure that, within reason, the boat performs as per the design and as intended. But once you start racing, it’s more about fine-tuning performance.”

Mckeon was more of a guest than a member of the race crew, invited, he says, to advise and accompany an owner who is himself an experienced sailor. “I tend to avoid getting involved in any manoeuvres nowadays,” the designer says. “I used to run forward and help get the kite down, but I feel I’m getting in the way now – these guys are so much bigger and stronger! But if I see something that’s snagged or a line that needs coiling, of course I’ll help.”

Getting involved

But that didn’t mean he was sitting quietly among Zemi ’s afterguard sipping tea. In fact, Mckeon admits he found it hard not to speak up at times.

“You don’t want to get involved with questioning the boat or the navigators and how they’re choosing to sail the boat tactically. You don’t want to step on their toes. But certainly, with regards to how the boat is being sailed in terms of sail trim and weight, moving the weight around on the boat, and even the more technical aspect of rudder angles, heel angles, etc, it’s hard not to comment. I only want to help – everyone has their own way and method!”

Mckeon was quite clear that the mainsail could be trimmed in a way that better suited Zemi ’s design. And he improved the fore-and-aft trim of the boat by placing the crew in optimum locations according to the weather conditions. Whether his advice made the difference or not, at her Antigua debut, Zemi came 3rd of three in her class, while at St Barth, she was 3rd out of five.

zemi yacht price

Malcolm Mckeon at the helm of Zemi, a yacht from his own drawing board.

“The boat performed as expected and I was happy with the result – we came in behind the two J-Class yachts and ahead of the two other 34m to 35m modern sloops,” he says. “I don’t think we could have done any better, really, against the boats in our class. We also received a lot of comments about the elegant look of the boat and how well she sailed. To me that’s always important.”

Zemi sets a prodigious quantity of sail: 360m2 for the pinhead main, 276m2 for the blade jib – both in North Sails moulded 3Di composite – and an epic 1,110m2 for the big A2 gennaker. Set against that is the righting moment from a 28-tonne telescopic keel that can extend the draught to 5.8m. In sea trials last year, the yacht achieved sailing speeds in excess of 25 knots – pretty hair-raising for a monohull. But despite her highly technical lay-up in carbon composite, Mckeon says the brief was always for a cruising boat.

Cruising first

“While the owner wanted to partake in regattas, racing was never the priority,” he says. “The intention was to cruise for three years or so and join some regattas after that. Thinking ahead, however, the boat has been designed to carry a square-top main and bigger sails for racing. Their entry into the Antigua Superyacht Challenge was a bit of a last-minute decision, but they enjoyed it so much that they decided to join the Bucket too.

“With regatta participation, you push the boat a little bit more than you would do when you’re cruising, so actually I think it’s really good for the crew to have had the opportunity to test the boat in this way – to do something like this, ahead of a world cruise, can be a big confidence builder, both with regard to their ability and the boat’s. When Zemi returns to regatta competition, with racing sails, I expect to see even better performance.”

zemi yacht price

And rest! The more elegant and inviting cruising mode of Zemi at anchor

This year’s Bucket saw optimum weather conditions for the big boats, Mckeon says. “At previous Buckets I’ve raced in, it’s got quite windy at times, quite gusty and with a lumpy sea. But this year was perfect – 12 to 16 knots, which is ideal for superyacht racing, with reasonably flat water. We didn’t use any heavier-air sails, but we used the Code 65, gennaker, blade jib, the main and our staysail. In summary, that’s the whole sail inventory!”

The racing was measured, with consistent results. Following the usual pattern of staggered starts with the slowest-rated yachts first, Zemi crossed the line at the end of the pack for the two round-the-island races, and around the middle for the downwind start of the “Not So Wiggley” race on day two. Though out-performed by the Js Velsheda and Hanuman, she was faster than the 34m Dykstra yacht Aurelius and the 40m Baltic Perseverance, taking 3rd place in the first two races.

But it all changed with the closing race on day three. “In the final race, there were some big wind shifts around the back of the island which made for some close tacking duals with other yachts in our class and a close run to the finish line,” Mckeon recalls. Unfortunately, it also made for an infringement on the race course for Zemi with a 30% penalty, and she came in last for the race.

She still took 3rd overall in her class, and the mishap didn’t dent the atmosphere of excitement aboard – particularly not for the proud owner. “He helmed every practice day and every race,” says Mckeon. “He loved racing his own boat. He did a great job and after the prizegiving, we all went out for a crew dinner where he said how delighted he was with Zemi ’s performance and how much he loved it. He is chuffed to bits with her.”

Nordic chic

The owner is Swedish, so naturally enough Zemi showcases an achingly cool interior design from Stockholm-based Andreas Martin-Löf Arkitekter. Filled with light, it’s the sort of styling often described as Nordic chic – all natural materials in muted tones and without excessive decoration or ornament. I ask Mckeon what he made of it.

“When you’re in ‘race mode’ all the interior luxuries, the cushions, everything’s off the boat,” he says a touch regretfully, “so you don’t really get the impression of how nice it is when it’s set up for cruising.”

zemi yacht price

Natural materials and muted tones styling by Stockholm-based Andreas Martin-Löf Arkitekter, often described as Nordic chic

Nevertheless, Zemi has been conceived as a formidable bluewater yacht, with four guest cabins, a stern tender garage and a multifunction beach club aft. Under the skin, she has been engineered to cope with high latitudes and the tropics in line with her owner’s three-year cruising plan, which has already taken her up to the Svalbard archipelago at 80°N, and is setting sights on the Pacific islands next.

Power capabilities include a powerful 247kW Danfoss electric motor powered by a pair of 129kW gensets, and the ability to regenerate power under sail for zero-emissions cruising. The tender garage door opens in two sections to minimise slamming in higher seas, and the bimini and foldable dodger can withstand 50 knots of wind.

From the dock, Zemi offers a dazzling spectacle with her metallic bronze topsides and a low coachroof with curved vertical glass windows. More striking still is Mckeon’s flowing teak decking, which follows the sculptured lines of the boat from the coachroof down into the cockpit and on to the transom. Not for nothing has this been called ‘teak as an artform’.

“Obviously, I like the look of the boat!” answers Mckeon when I ask him what elements he’s proudest of. “I think Zemi looks quite contemporary; different from other boats we have designed. I was very pleased with the performance, too. I also like the open plan design, and I think it works well for racing and cruising.”

Mckeon has a busy year ahead, working on a flurry of motoryacht designs signed late last year. His Apex 850 concept with Royal Huisman for the world’s biggest sloop (it would have a 107m rig) remains on the drawing board, but he has just signed a client for an 81m Huisman-built sloop (see above). And there are still prospects circling his sailing supercat designs, from the jaw-dropping MM751 to the 30m Blackcat.

Contemplating a year when no new Malcolm Mckeon sailing boats are due to be delivered, the designer’s mind is turning to some of his previous projects and the possibility of a reunion at next year’s Bucket (13-16 March). “The older boats I designed like the Kokomo’s, and the Mondango’s – the original owners have all moved on now,” he says. “These are second, sometimes third owners, so I don’t have that relationship with them. But I’d love to step back aboard and see how my earlier work is holding up!”

The Divine Voyage Begins: Christening of the Baltic 110 Zemi

The Divine Voyage Begins: Christening of the Baltic 110 Zemi

Last week, the meticulously designed Baltic 110 Zemi was christened and launched in Finland, marking the culmination of a two-year building period. The occasion saw the owner and his family imparting traditional blessings by breaking a champagne bottle over her keel as Zemi tasted water for the first time.

Zemi, primarily envisioned as a luxuriously fitted performance cruising yacht, is designed to escort the owner's family and friends on sailing escapades across the globe. Named after an ancient Caribbean deity, this sea goddess is built to exacting standards in advanced carbon composites, following the innovative design of Malcolm McKeon.

Transported by a low loader to Baltic's launch site in Jakobstad, Zemi journeyed through numerous bridges and a local railway line with elevated power cables. Her journey concluded on time as a mobile crane was primed to lift her into her natural habitat, the open water.

The christening and launch ceremony sparked a wave of celebratory emotions among the owner's party as they marked the onset of Zemi's worldwide voyage. The bottle of champagne used for the ceremony held special significance, preserved since their first yacht's launch in 2005. Watching the 565th yacht crafted by Baltic being craned into the water, project manager Tommy Johansson and his team took a moment to appreciate their extraordinary achievement.

Zemi's striking metallic bronze hull, extensive teak deck, and 'classic aggressive' superstructure became fully visible upon her submersion. She has unique features like a convertible central cockpit, a detailed fold-out transom and bathing platform, and a distinctive teak-skinned stern garage for a Williams tender. McKeon's signature wrap-over teak decking, extending onto the transom, was also unveiled.

Zemi's interior reflects the artistic genius of award-winning Swedish architect Andreas Martin-Löf. His minimalist style, combined with a focus on sustainability and 'craft,' manifests as a warm, comforting environment characterized by walnut veneer and lightweight honeycomb structures.

The propulsion system of Zemi echoes the owner's commitment to a green future. Instead of the typical controllable pitch propeller, a 247kW Danfoss motor with a direct drive to a four-bladed folding propeller powers the vessel. The absence of a gearbox and hydraulic controls results in weight and space savings, aligning with the overall lightweight design ethos.

Zemi is slated for a voyage of a lifetime. Her telescopic lifting keel and twin rudders guarantee a rewarding sailing experience with a broad range of anchorages. After trials off Jakobstad, Zemi will head to Norway, Svalbard, and Iceland before turning south towards Scotland. From there, she plans to cross the Atlantic to compete in the St Barths Bucket in 2024 and continue her worldwide voyage.

After a 2-year build period 33.5m (110’) sailing yacht ZEMI was launched as a Baltic 110 from the shipyard in Finland . The ceremony was attended by the delighted new owner and his family who followed tradition and broke a champagne bottle over her keel as she hit the water.

Also in attendance were the project manager, representatives from build team and other Baltic Yacht dignitaries. Executive Vice President Henry Hawkins had this to say, “Whenever we launch a yacht to join the Baltic family, it’s fair to say the thoughts of many members of our staff sail away with her, celebrating the conclusion of another unique build and wishing her and her owner fantastic sailing.”

Her striking metallic bronze hull contrasts dramatically with the teak decks and superstructure style, described as ‘classic aggressive’ by the owner’s representative. Her vertical coachroof windows and streamlined, low-level superstructure are distinctive features as is her teak-clad main cockpit which can be converted into a sizable sun lounging area and protected by a fold-down hood and full-length removable bimini.

Her interior is the work of award-winning Swedish architect Martin-Löf who has applied his minimalist style with the use of sustainable materials including walnut and limestone veneer to reduce weight. There is an abundance of natural light from long salon port windows and coachroof skylights plus thoughtful lighting design which includes lanterns made from Japanese rice paper and walnut edging.

As well as her multitude of headsail options, the owner has opted for a zero-emissions electric propulsion system using a 247kW Danfoss motor to drive the propeller. A bank of lithium-ion batteries is changed by two 129kw gensets and supply all the domestic, hydraulic and rig handling equipment.

Following her sea trials she will begin a global adventure which is scheduled to include Norway , Iceland , Scotland , the Canaries, an Atlantic crossing to the Caribbean – where she will compete – followed by passage through the Panama Canal and across the Pacific .

We wish sailing yacht ZEMI and her owner good luck on their world tour.

ZEMI // Baltic Yachts

Zemi is a 33.50m sailing yacht by finnish yacht builder baltic yachts with exterior lines by malcolm mckeon and interior design by andreas martin-löf arkitekter..

The owner of Zemi has decided to utilize a zero-emissions electric propulsion system, which involves a 247kW Danfoss motor directly connected to a four-bladed folding propeller. This choice deviates from the more common controllable pitch propeller. By eliminating the need for a gearbox and hydraulic controls associated with a controllable pitch propeller, the drive train of the vessel has been simplified, resulting in fewer components, reduced space requirements, and significant weight savings.

To power the electric propulsion system and meet all domestic, hydraulic, and rig handling needs, two 129kW gensets are employed to charge a large bank of lithium-ion batteries. Additionally, the folding propeller can be used for hydrogeneration, generating electricity while the vessel is sailing.

Zemi was meticulously built to Baltic’s rigorous standards using advanced carbon composites under the design expertise of Malcolm McKeon. Primarily intended as a luxurious performance cruising yacht, it can accommodate the owner’s family and friends for global sailing in high and low latitudes. The name “Zemi” pays homage to an ancient Caribbean deity.

Sailing Yacht ZEMI Baltic Yachts

Zemi’s telescopic lifting keel, which boasts a 28-tonne bulb, reduces draft from 6m to 3.95m to access various anchorages on her global voyage. Additionally, her twin rudders add to her maneuverability.

After undergoing trials off Jakobstad this summer, Zemi will begin her journey by heading north towards Norway, then continuing to Svalbard and Iceland before turning south towards Scotland. From there, she will go to the Canaries and cross the Atlantic to participate in the prestigious St Barths Bucket Regatta in 2024.

Interior of ZEMI

The interior of Zemi has been skillfully designed by the esteemed Swedish architect Andreas Martin-Löf, known for his minimalist style and commitment to sustainability. His attention to detail and focus on craftsmanship have created a cozy and inviting atmosphere in the accommodation. Walnut timber, mainly in veneer form, has been expertly bonded onto lightweight honeycomb structures to save weight. This weight-saving concept is also applied to the head compartments, where light carcasses are adorned with limestone veneers for sinks and surfaces.

The designer’s meticulous approach to lighting is evident throughout the yacht. Lanterns made from Japanese rice paper and walnut strips have been strategically placed in the corners of the saloon, while discreetly mounted light sources in panel divides to create a subtle and peaceful ambiance. Furthermore, the interior is filled with abundant natural light through the 1.8m long saloon hull ports and extensive coachroof skylights.

OUR AWARD WINNING YACHTS

In total our yachts have amassed thirty-three awards by various organisations including the ShowBoat Design Awards, the International Superyacht Society Awards and the World Superyacht Awards. PASSION FOR INNOVATION

zemi yacht price

HYDROGENERATION

Using an electric motor for a yacht’s auxiliary propulsion has become popular as the need for more environmentally acceptable power increases. A great advantage of using an electric motor is that it can work as a generator by harnessing energy from the ‘free-wheeling’, controllable pitch propeller when the yacht is sailing. The electric motor becomes a generator, which charges a battery bank and in turn supplies power to the sailing systems and services aboard the yacht.

“The NAVIX50 embodies our philosophy of creating vessels that excel in any environment,” Leapher CEO Yiannis Andriotis said in a statement. “From the Drake Passage to the coast of St. Tropez, this yacht redefines what’s possible in the sub-500GT category.”

The spacious interior includes six generous cabins, with the option for a seventh cabin or expanded skylounge. The guest cabin on the main deck can also be turned into a gym, wellness area, or an expanded owner’s suite. All guest cabins are equipped with king-size beds, while the owner’s suite is fitted with a plush super king-size bed. The yacht is also home to six crew cabins that can sleep up to 11.

The exterior decks are replete with alfresco dining areas, lounges, and sunbeds. The aft deck is arguably the standout, with two folding terraces, a large, 18-foot pool, a sprawling sunbathing area, a swim platform, and not one but two wet bars. At the opposite end, the foredeck doubles as a garage for two tenders.

Questions for Investigators Trying to Unravel Mystery of Luxury Yacht’s Sinking

The investigators searching for answers about the shipwreck, leaving seven dead, face questions about extreme weather and possible human error or problems with the yacht itself.

  • Share full article

Two small boats with outboard motors make their way across the water.

By Alan Yuhas

More than 180 feet long, with a mast towering about 240 feet and a keel that could be lowered for greater stability, the Bayesian luxury yacht did not, in the eyes of its maker, have the vulnerabilities of a ship that would easily sink.

“It drives me insane,” Giovanni Costantino, the chief executive of the Italian Sea Group, which in 2022 bought the company that made the ship, said after its wreck last week. “Following all the proper procedures, that boat is unsinkable.”

But the $40 million sailing yacht sank within minutes and with fatal results: seven dead, including the British technology billionaire Michael Lynch, his teenage daughter, four of Mr. Lynch’s friends and a member of the crew. Fifteen people, including the captain, escaped on a lifeboat.

Mr. Lynch had invited family, friends and part of his legal team on a cruise in the Mediterranean to celebrate his acquittal in June of fraud charges tied to the sale of his company to the tech giant Hewlett-Packard.

The Italian authorities have opened a manslaughter investigation, searching for answers from the survivors, the manufacturer and the wreck itself. They face a range of questions and possible factors.

An ‘earthquake’ in the sky?

When the Bayesian sank around 4 a.m. on Aug. 19, the waters in its area, about half a mile off the Sicilian port of Porticello, were transformed by an extremely sudden and violent storm, according to fishermen, a captain in the area and meteorologists.

But what kind of storm is still a mystery, compounded by the fact that a sailing schooner anchored nearby did not have its own disaster. Also unclear is whether the crew was aware that the Italian authorities had issued general warnings about bad weather the night before.

Karsten Börner, the captain of the nearby passenger ship, said he’d had to steady his ship during “really violent” winds . During the storm, he said, the Bayesian seemed to disappear behind his ship.

Severe lightning and strong gusts were registered by the Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, according to Attilio Di Diodato, its director. “It was very intense and brief in duration,” he said.

The yacht, he said, had most likely been hit by a fierce downburst — a blast of powerful wind surging down during a thunderstorm. His agency put out rough-sea warnings the previous evening, alerting sailors about possible storms.

Locals have said the winds “felt like an earthquake.” A fisherman in Porticello said that he had seen a flare go off in the early-morning hours. His brother ventured to the site once the weather had calmed about 20 minutes later, he said, finding only floating cushions.

The Italian authorities have so far declined to say whether investigators had seen any structural damage to the hull or other parts of the ship.

Open hatches or doors?

The boat executive, Mr. Costantino, has argued that the Bayesian was an extremely safe vessel that could list even to 75 degrees without capsizing. His company, the Italian Sea Group, in 2022 bought the yacht’s manufacturer, Perini Navi, which launched the ship in 2008.

Mr. Costantino said that if some of the hatches on the side and in the stern, or some of the deck doors, had been open, the boat could have taken on water and sunk. Standard procedure in such storms, he said, would be to switch on the engine, lift the anchor and turn the boat into the wind, lowering the keel for extra stability, closing doors and gathering the guests in the main hall inside the deck.

At a news conference on Saturday, almost a week after the sinking, investigators said the yacht had sunk at an angle , with its stern — where the heavy engine was — having gone down first. The wreck was found lying on its right side at the bottom of a bay, about 165 feet deep.

12 guests occupied the yacht’s six cabins. There were also 10 crew members.

Open hatches, doors and cabin windows could have let in water during a storm, according to the manufacturer.

Water pouring into open hatches or doors could have contributed to the sinking, experts say, but that on its own may not account for the speed at which such a large boat vanished underwater.

Asked about the hatches at the news conference, the authorities declined to comment on whether they had been found open at the wreck.

The authorities have also not specified whether the boat had been anchored, whether it was under power at the time or whether its sails had been unfurled.

A retracted keel?

The Bayesian had a keel — the fin-like structure beneath a boat that can help stabilize it — that could be retracted or extended, according to its manufacturer. On some yachts, keels can be raised to let the large vessel dock in shallower water, and extended downward to help keep a boat level.

But like the hatches, the status of the keel alone may not explain why a large ship sank with such precipitous speed. Investigators have not disclosed what divers may have seen at the wreck, aside from saying divers had faced obstacles like furnishings and electrical wiring in tight quarters. Officials want to raise the wreck to better examine it, a process that may take weeks.

Human error?

Ambrogio Cartosio, the prosecutor in charge of the case, said at the news conference that it was “plausible” crimes had been committed, but that investigators had not zeroed in on any potential suspects.

“There could be responsibilities of the captain only,” he said. “There could be responsibilities of the whole crew. There could be responsibilities of the boat makers. Or there could be responsibilities of those who were in charge of surveilling the boat.”

It remains unclear what kind of emergency training or preparation took place before the disaster, or what kind of coordination there was during it. So far, none of the surviving crew members have made a public statement about what happened the night the ship sank.

Prosecutors said they want to ask more questions of the captain and crew, who have been in a Sicilian hotel with other survivors. They said that neither alcohol nor drug tests had been performed on crew members, and that they have been allowed to leave Italy.

Prosecutors also said they were also investigating why the captain, an experienced sailor, left the sinking boat while some passengers were still on board.

Besides possible manslaughter charges, the authorities are investigating the possibility of a negligently caused shipwreck.

The bodies of five passengers were found in one cabin, on the left side of the yacht, the authorities said. The five were most likely trying to flee to the higher side of the boat and were probably sleeping when the boat started to sink, they said.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise confirms it will continue its $4 billion suit against Mike Lynch's estate after he died in a tragic yacht sinking

  • HPE says it will continue to pursue its $4 billion lawsuit against Mike Lynch's estate.
  • Lynch, along with his daughter and top attorney, died when his superyacht sank in August.
  • Lynch and the company had been involved in a nine-year legal battle over the sale of Autonomy.

Insider Today

Hewlett Packard Enterprise said Monday that it wouldn't drop its lawsuit against the late tech tycoon Mike Lynch 's estate.

The news came two weeks after Lynch died in a tragic yacht sinking off the coast of Sicily. Lynch, along with seven others, including his daughter and his top attorney , drowned when his superyacht, Bayesian, sank.

Before his death, Lynch had been embroiled in a long legal battle with the company. Hewlett-Packard bought his software company, Autonomy, in 2011 and later accused Lynch of valuing it inaccurately. Hewlett-Packard broke into two companies — Hewlett Packard Enterprise and HP — in 2015.

An HPE spokesperson said Monday that the company would continue to pursue the lawsuit, which seeks $4 billion in damages.

Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, who survived the yacht tragedy, is expected to inherit her husband's fight, Fortune reported .

"In 2022, an English High Court judge ruled that HPE had substantially succeeded in its civil fraud claims against Dr Lynch and Mr Hussain," the spokesperson said Monday in a statement to The Associated Press .

Related stories

"A damages hearing was held in February 2024 and the judge's decision regarding damages due to HPE will arrive in due course," they added. "It is HPE's intention to follow the proceedings through to their conclusion."

The Monday statement came after the group initially sent a statement to several media outlets declining to comment on legal matters in light of the tragedy.

"We do not think it appropriate to comment on legal matters in these tragic circumstances," a spokesperson previously said, per Fortune . "We're saddened by this tragic event and our thoughts are with the families and friends of all the victims."

The yacht sank just weeks after Lynch and Stephen Chamberlain, his former vice president of finance, were acquitted by a San Francisco jury in June of all criminal charges related to Autonomy's sale.

The indictment accused Lynch and Chamberlain of falsifying financial documents, lying to auditors and regulators, and suppressing people who criticized Autonomy's financial practices.

A representative of HPE did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider sent outside regular business hours.

Correction: September 3, 2024 — An earlier version of this story misstated when Lynch and Chamberlain were acquitted of criminal charges. They were acquitted weeks before the yacht sank, not weeks after. An earlier version also misstated the timeline of the lawsuit. It has been in process for nine years, not 13. The story has also been updated to clarify that Hewlett Packard Enterprise is pursuing the lawsuit against Lynch's estate. HPE broke off from Hewlett-Packard in 2015.
