Programme Overview
Ngaroto Sailing Club, Lake Ngaroto, Te Awamutu - Where sailings a breeze! Lake Ngaroto has been a popular sailing venue since the 1950s. The clubooms were opened in 1967 and there is secure boat storage. Originally the club catered for motorboats and sail but a lake bylaw now prevents the use of motorboats (apart from patrol boats) on the lake and only sail and rowing or kayaks are permitted on the lake. This ruling makes for an ideal (quiet) environment for yachties to enjoy a days sail or paddle. Ngaroto is small relative to Rotorua or Taupo, but a course leg of over 1 km is possible when the wind blows from the northwest. The lake is an ideal venue for both centreboard and trailer yacht racing. Family $240.00 Senior $160.00 Junior $90.00 Junior learn to Sail classes are on Sundays. Season runs from September to end of April. Contact Club Commodore Paul Hayes for any additional information or any questions you may have.

Sailability travel to Lake Ngatoro For Hansa 303 North Islands
This last weekend (17/18 October), a team of 4 sailors and 7 volunteers/family members loaded up our boat trailers and travelled over to Lake Ngaroto (just out of Te Awamutu) to compete in the Hansa 303 North Island Championships. There were 9 boats in the regatta, all singles and represented Auckland, Taranaki, Waikato and Tauranga.
There were 7 races over the two days and all in very light and fickle “winds”. It was very close but random racing, with wind dropping out for some, all the while a nemesis only metres away was chugging along. However, thanks to our coaching sessions over the last couple of months, our younger sailors have greatly improved their starting skills. The regatta was undoubtedly an incredible experience for learning, fun times and character building.
Our team results :
Paulien Chamberlain - 1st
Caleb Evans - 4th
Devlin Proctor - 7th
Tom Scott - 9th
Thank you to our volunteers for your time and energy and a big thank you to the Ngaroto Sailing Club for hosting the event. Kia Ora!

Philippa Stevenson: Save-lake plan turns into a bit of a mess
COMMENT The Lake Ngaroto Yacht Club was out in force, the yachts zipping about the lake in a stiff breeze, their owners unconcerned by a renewed public health warning to avoid contact with the water. Not entirely unconcerned. At least one club official fears the repeated warnings about the health risks posed by a permanent toxic algal bloom at the lake, 6km north of Te Awamutu, will put people off using it and cause the club's demise. On Saturday he expressed his anxiety to another group gathered on the lakeshore - duck-shooters, conservationists, brothers Murray and Roy Dench and Environment Waikato councillor Barry O'Connor. They were out in the squally weather for quite a different reason: to accompany a field trip by members of the Advisory Committee for the Environment (Acre), an independent, umbrella environmental advocacy group which has advised Environment Waikato for 14 years. Acre chairwoman Catherine Smith donned her tramping boots for a trek around the lake and was joined by other members. They make annual visits to areas of interest or concern. Ngaroto was chosen this year because in the past Acre has made several submissions on it, and it was time to check on progress, Smith said. I was along because the degraded state of 38 Waikato peat lakes is an environmental issue discussed in this column since July. Various restoration efforts with varying amounts of success are going on at some of the lakes, but Ngaroto, the biggest peat lake in Waipa and described as the district's jewel, has had the most intensive restoration, costing more than $1 million. Despite all the money and effort, which has won environmental awards and acclaim, the lake still has major problems. Murray Dench, however, thinks the restoration project was a great idea but its execution a disaster. Peat lake expert Keith Thompson, a former Waikato University bioscience senior lecturer, agrees. Both men say the plan to restore Ngaroto was done with insufficient expert advice and, along with O'Connor, wonder, too, about the worth of the February 2002 Waipa Peat Lakes and Wetlands Accord. The aim of the accord, signed by the Waipa District Council, Environment Waikato, Ngaa Iwi Toopu O Waikato, the Conservation Department, and Fish and Game, is to encourage restoration of degraded lakes and wetlands "in an unfavourable conservation status" through sound management and research. Progress has been very slow. Advocates of the Ngaroto restoration reject suggestions their efforts have been wasted. Consultant John Greenwood, who oversaw the project, says it is a major improvement that almost all the lake margin has credible vegetative cover. The next critical thing to do is control nutrients entering the lake from farmland, he says. After a tramp around the lake on Saturday with the knowledgeable Acre members, I wasn't the only one questioning many aspects of the restoration. Most of the 200,000 native plants put around the lake are manuka, which now towers above trampers, stopping them seeing anything but manuka trunks and creating a perpetual gloom in which barely another plant survives. The earth beneath the manuka is dry, not wet, land, and is without a hearty mix of bog plants. In a couple of places, recovering wetland plants had been recently cleared to be replaced with species that were, according to the Acre people, unsuitable for the area. We crossed at last a dozen drains carrying swiftly flowing, nutrient-rich farm run-off directly into the lake, straight past ineffectual silt traps. Hoof prints in the boggy soil showed some cattle hadn't just leaned over poorly made and broken fences for a tasty morsel, but had made it into the reserve to graze. Perhaps most disturbing was a sign to educate walkers about wetlands. It told passersby that over time peat lakes naturally became clogged with plants and dried out. It implied the changes wrought by farming and other human intervention had simply speeded up this process. The statement is wrong. The Waikato peat lakes are unique because they have survived for 17,000 years and not dried out. They are mostly dominated by tall restiad rushes, not the sphagnum moss that creeps over and fills in lakes overseas and in a few places in New Zealand. What now? Environment Waikato programme manager Viv Smith has been charged with getting the peat lakes accord on track. "We can't put the lakes back as they were. We'll have to look at what is possible and whether that is achievable." The National Wetland Trust of New Zealand * Email Philippa Stevenson

Plentiful birdlife around the lake make for ample bird watching opportunities, and the mostly flat walking track and picnic area make this a great family walk in the Waikato.
The local sailing club is regularly on the water, while the camouflaged maimai (huts) around the lake's edge play host to duck hunters during the months of May and June.
The walking track passes through bush areas, farmland and wetlands as it navigates around the lake, with signage providing information and illustrations about the local ecology.
