It is a 1,000-passenger riverboat that traveled 2,800 miles down the Mississippi River, down and around the shorelines of Florida to call Savannah her home.

Built in 1995 as a luxury floating casino for 14 million dollars, the majestic 1800s paddlewheel-style riverboat spent several years traveling the Mississippi River. When gambling legislation changed, allowing land-based casinos to open, the riverboat underwent a four-million-dollar makeover. Today, this spectacular paddlewheel-style riverboat acts as Savannah Riverboat Cruises’ Savannah River Queen’s grand sister ship.

The Georgia Queen measures an impressive 230 feet long, 64 feet wide and towering at 68 feet tall.

She is among the top elite in the country with a capacity of 1,000 passengers, plus a 200-person crew, making her the size of a small cruise ship at 38,000 square feet. The ship’s entertainment spaces include three grand ballrooms with over 15,000 square feet of dining space. It offers more than 5,000 square feet of open-air top deck space with patio seating. This affords more than enough room to accommodate a romantic riverboat wedding on the Savannah River.

The Georgia Queen also boasts a multi-deck, fully equipped gourmet kitchen. It is also equipped with a large service elevator, making traveling between galleys discrete and easy. This onboard kitchen will change the entire dining experience for guests. This will allow for more plated dinner opportunities and flexibility in menu items.

When you think about the most haunted places in Georgia , what comes to mind? There are lots of spooky places here: places with urban legends, perhaps murders, ghosts, and, almost always, a sordid history. If you've got a few places in mind, chances are good that Savannah, GA was among them. This beautiful and historic city is considered to be one of the most haunted places in the southeast. And when it comes to haunted cemeteries in GA, one name stands above most: Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, GA. This gorgeous graveyard is an amazing place with so much history and natural beauty, but it's also the site of many legends and it's said to be one of the most haunted cemeteries in Georgia. While many of us are familiar with the fact that Savannah, Georgia is one of the most haunted cities in the United States, you might be shocked at just how many places here have spooky legends surrounding them.

In particular, one Southern Gothic cemetery in Savannah has frequently taken top honors as one of the most haunted places in America and certainly a contributor to the haunted Georgia legends. The famed Bonaventure Cemetery is known the world over for its beauty, but also for its ghosts.

Many people consider this cemetery one of the most beautiful final resting places in the world, and we definitely agree! There's nothing like seeing the Spanish moss draping from towering oak trees. The colorful flowers blossoming with vibrant color each spring is also a treat.

The Bonaventure Cemetery history is quite rich. The graveyard was featured in the novel Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. It's also the final resting place to quite a few notable figures from history.

It's also quite popular as the place where the ghost of little Gracie Watson resides. She was the daughter of a Savannah area hotel manager and well-known throughout the city. Tragically, she died of pneumonia at the age of six, and her family placed a sculpture in her honor at her grave site.

Since her death in 1889, many residents have claimed to have seen Gracie, both throughout town and also in the cemetery. Today, tourists and locals alike visit the little girl's final resting place to pay their respects and leave behind gifts.

However, Gracie isn't the only reason that Bonaventure Cemetery has been dubbed one of the most haunted cemeteries in GA. Over the years, visitors have reported hearing inexplicable sounds.

If you visit, keep your eyes peeled and make sure to listen out. You never know if you'll hear crying babies, dogs barking madly, or even spooky bouts of laughter.

Tours are offered regularly at the cemetery, and we highly recommend coming for yourself to see what makes this haunted cemetery in Georgia so unique. Feeling really brave? Night tours are occasionally offered.

Even if you aren't a strong believer in the paranormal, a visit here is an amazing experience you'll never forget.

The intricate craftsmanship on the memorials and statues here is incredible.

We can't answer the question "is Bonaventure Cemetery haunted?" for sure - you'll have to decide that for yourself. However, we can say it's one of the prettiest cemeteries in the country and part of haunted Georgia history.

The Incredible Church In Georgia That Has Been Left In Ruins

In a place with as much history as the Peach State, it's not much of a surprise that there are plenty of abandoned places in Georgia . Often, these no-longer-used destinations become eyesores to the surrounding community, and it's not uncommon to see shuttered buildings being overtaken by nature and graffiti. The spot we're featuring today may no longer be used for its intended purpose, but it's now a beautiful art piece that speaks to the history of the area. The Nesbitt-Union Chapel in Marietta, GA is a historic church that's no longer standing, but is still a landmark of the community.

The Nesbitt-Union Chapel was originally just a single room constructed in 1886, and it was unique in that it served as a chapel for several different denominations.

This is a pretty busy area today, but in the late 1800s, this was located on Marietta's outskirts. The church was an important place of worship for those who lived just outside of the city and would have had to travel many miles to reach Marietta for service.

Some of the early history surrounding the church has been lost to time. At some point, there was a fire that burned down a wooden structure on the property.

It's likely that this was a prior building that served as a chapel before the construction of the stone building whose remains still stand here today.

By the early 1900s, all that remained of the church was a single wall.

Recently, a "ghost frame" has been erected to memorialize the history of the site and help you better imagine what stood here.

It may look a bit bizarre from the side of the road, but I think this is such a neat art piece and a beautiful tribute to a piece of history!

Day1: Walk by the 1st African Church

This is the first black Baptist congregation in North America and was organized in 1773. The church was built in 1859.

Savannah features 22 squares, or city parks, one is Franklin Square. Named after Benjamin Franklin who was an agent for Georgia in London.

To be honest, I didn’t know what to expect in this museum. Upon entering, the exhibits were engaging, and they led me through the history of prohibition.

I learned about the groups that supported it, the groups that dodged it and the economic reasons it was repealed. For adults, it was an engaging history lesson. For kids, it will fall flat.

Located at 209 W. St. Julian St, Savannah Open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m . Adult admission starts at $17.23 with demand pricing. Kids (4 to 12) start at $10.17.

Ellis Square was one of the first squares laid out in Savannah, one of 22. Named after Sir Henry Ellis, he was an early governor of the colony of Georgia.

This original square was destroyed in the 1950s and turned into a parking garage. That came down and located underground and a new square opened in 2010.

Top Things to Do on Cumberland Island

Running parallel to the Savannah River, Broughton Street is lined with boutiques. I recommend walking up some side of the side and down the other.

The Paris Market

This two-level shop is a treasure trove of unique finds from around the world. The Paris Market sells accessories like berets and ribbons. Also, find housewares, dinnerware and glassware, especially European brands and styles.

The Coffee Fox

It’s a cute coffee shop for a pick-me-up. It serves pour-over, iced and barista-made coffee drinks plus pastries.

Savannah Bee Company

Stop in and support the bees. Savannah Bee Company offers lots of varieties, like individual flower honey, along with flavored honey.

Savannah Seafood Shack

This quick-service restaurant is a must for a simple seafood lunch. During my visit, I ordered a seafood cone. Its low country boil, with shrimp, sausage, and corn on the cob, is another popular menu item.

Leopold’s Ice Cream

Under its neon sign, there will probably be a line for this Savannah treat. Leopold’s Ice Cream. It offers gluten-free, vegan and ice cream treats made from a host of popular ice cream flavors.

Located at 212 E. Broughton St. Open Sunday to Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Gutstein Gallery and SCAD Exhibitions

The Savannah College of Art and Design was founded in 1978 and offers college degrees in the arts and design. Along Broughton Street, visitors will find its exhibition space and art sales gallery.

Top Things to Do in Nashville

Float along the Savannah River on one of the two riverboats on a 1 1/2 narrated cruise. The 3:30 p.m. sightseeing cruise departs from the original location of the first landing of General Olglethrope on the riverfront.

Then the cruise heads up river under Eugene Talmadge Memorial Bridge to the Port of Savannah. On our trip we saw a large container ship heading out to sea.

The Savannah Riverboat Cruise heads further downriver past the Waving Girl statue, Florence Martus. The cruise continues to the tip of Hutchinson Island and Old Fort Jackson before circling around.

Departs from 9 East River Street. Several cruise options are available, like brunch, lunch, dinner and more. There is a paid bar on board with both air-conditioned and open-air seating. Prices start $36.95 for adults and kids (5 to 12) are $23.95.

Located in a 19th-century cotton warehouse, Vic’s on the River offers a blend of Southern favorites, Low Country classics and Gulf of Mexico seafood. Its expansive menu offers a wide selection of wines by the glass, beer and signature cocktails.

Guests will find Southern staples like Fried Green Tomatoes, Crawfish Beignets and Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes. Entrees include Shrimp and Grits, Pecan-Fried Flounder and Vic’s fried Chicken.

Located at 26 E Bay St., Savannah. Open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Reservations are recommended.

Best Things to Do in Branson 

Take a ghost tour while in Savannah. This town is one of the most haunted in the U.S.

The Ghosts and Gravestone Tour is an 80-minute guided tour on a trolley. During the ghostly introduction, we learned the different factors that lead to Savannah’s haunting, like servant abuse and nearby Civil War battlefields.

we headed to the Andrew Low House. For former Girl Scouts, this was the house of the Girl Scout Founder Juliet Gordon Low. The house has long been rumored to be haunted and we got to tour the house after dark.

After cruising by graveyards and haunted squares, we ended the tour at Perkins and Sons Ship Chandlery. It is here that shiphands were abused.

It departs from 301 East River St. General admission starts at $37.56, and children under 6 aren’t allowed on evening departures. There are several tour options, and departures start at 6:40 p.m. and run until 9:40 p.m.

Day 2: Brunch at Rhett

Getaways are better when started with brunch. Rhett serves traditional brunch, like Eggs Benedict favorites. However, find entrees with a Southern twist, like Chicken and Waffles. And there’s a Bloody Mary bar.

Located in The Alida, 412 Williamson St., Savannah. Open daily for brunch from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.   Reservations are recommended for weekend brunch.

Inside the 1819 two-story, pale ochre Neo-Classical Regency-style mansion is a collection of 19th and 20th-century art. The museum features the Rotunda Gallery and a sculpture gallery.

On my visit, I saw Bird Girl by Sylvia Shaw Judson, made famous for its cover feature on the book,  Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil .

Telfair Academy features three separate locations: Telfair Academy, Jepson Center and Owens-Thomas House and Slave Quarters.

Located at 121 Barnard St., Savannah. Open Wednesday to Monday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Adult admission for all three is $30, students are $20 and kids (to 12) are $10.

What’s Closeby: Jepson Center

Explore the  Jepson Center and the Children’s Art Museum

The Jepson Center is located in a modern building that opened in 2006. During my visit, it hosted a fascinating traveling exhibition. It offers exhibits focused on contemporary art and photography.

The newly opened Children’s Art Museum is an interactive space on three levels. It features art on the walls and engaging activities that encourage exploration.

Located at 207 W. York St., Savannah, Open Wednesday to Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is included in Telfair Academy.

What’s Closeby: Telfair Square

In a similar style to the Telfair Mansion, the Owens Thomas House offers a look into the lifestyle of the affluent in Savannah in the 19th century. Visitors will see the original furnishings and art as they learn about how the enslaved worked behind the scenes.

After touring the main house, the tour continues to the slave quarters behind the garden. The juxtaposition of the conditions helps to tell the story.

What’s Closeby: Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace Museum , founder of Girl Scouts

Established in 1750 when Savannah was the capital of British Georgia, this downtown cemetery stopped accepting burials in 1853. It became a city park about 40 years later.

As the oldest cemetery still instanct in Savannah, visitors can stroll through to see the old gravestones. Ghost tours frequent the Colonial Park Cemetery and it is rumored to be haunted.

Dinner at Olde Pink House

This fabled restaurant is located in a mansion built in 1771. Rumored to be haunted, tour buses frequently circle the eatery.

Inside, diners can peruse a Southern menu with appetizers like Crab Cakes and Fried Green Tomatoes. Entrees include seafood options like Flounder and Fried Shimp along with Fried Chicken.

Florence Martus would wave at ships approaching Savannah from 1887 to 1931, after looking for her long-lost love. Today a statue stands in her place.

But now Chatham County and Savannah governments are partnering with the Coastal Region Metropolitan Planning Organization to study options for eliminating the crossing; the study's findings will be used to apply for grant programs such as the Federal Railroad Administration’s At-Grade Crossing Elimination Program, according to the project's website .

"This has to change," said Savannah Mayor Van Johnson at a recent press conference. "All of us are familiar with trying to get to where you need to go, and you can't get there because of a train."

There will be two public meetings about the study for residents to provide input on issues created by the crossing, as well as give insight on the community's preferred alternatives.

The first public meeting will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 17 at Wilmington Island's Frank Murray Community Center. The second will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Sept. 18 at the Mendonsa Hearing Room in downtown Savannah.

The study will consider current and future traffic patterns for freight, commuter, local, bicycle and pedestrian traffic, according to the project's website. There will also be consideration of future growth especially for the industrial areas east of Truman Parkway," the project website states.

The final product of the study will entail a project justification statement, preferred alternatives and costs estimates to allow for preliminary engineering and a concept report required for construction.

Johnson noted how the President Street crossing can cause particularly long disruptions due to the trains moving back and forth. Trains do that while unloading or loading cargo or switching tracks.

There are also potential public safety concerns if police or ambulances are unable to cross due to disruptions, Johnson said. It also contributes to some commuters being late for work.

"That should not be a fact of life here in Savannah," Johnson said.

Savannah Riverboat Cruises was established in Savannah, Georgia in 1991 under the direction of experienced Captain, Jonathan H. Claughton.  Savannah’s antebellum charm, with flowing Spanish moss hanging from stoic live oaks and welcoming shady squares, hearkens back to the days when paddle driven riverboats full of tourists and locals dotted the Savannah River.

With the founding of the company, Capt. Claughton sought to bring a dinner cruise tour to Savannah.  After doing his research, he invested in the River Queen, a 400 passenger vessel.  This riverboat served him, and his guests,w ell as he and his crew welcomed those in Savannah to learn the history of this great port city.

In 1997,after six years of success, Capt. Claughton expanded the company and added an additional riverboat, the 550 passenger Georgia Queen.

Both riverboats feature two climate-controlled dining decks and an open-air third deck.  Decked out in traditional red, white and blue riverboat colors, these elegantly appointed boats cannot help but draw visitors back to a time when gentility and relaxation was always in vogue.

In winter 2007, the company welcomed the newest edition to their fleet,the 600 passenger New Savannah River Queen.  This boat features three climate controlled dining rooms, three bars, and a top deck snack shop.  The Savannah River Queen has two large dining areas perfect for large groups and an open air, covered third deck patio space.  The third deck also features a VIP room capable of accommodating 36 people.

When asked about the future, Claughton said, “We will continue to be a center stage fixture on River Street.  We have seen a slow and steady growth through the years.  I know we will continue to expand.”

This expansion has led to the arrival in 2016 of a new riverboat, the Georgia Queen.  The Georgia Queen measures an impressive 230 ft long,64 ft wide and a towering 68 ft tall and features three grand ballrooms with over 15,000 square feet of dining space, a 5,000 square foot, fully open-air top deck with patio seating.  The entire boat encompasses a total of 38,000 square feet.  She can carry 1,000 passengers plus 200 crew, which makes her the size of a small cruise ship.

The riverboat tours leave the dock right next to the exact location where General Oglethrope first landed on the river front and head upriver, into the Port of Savannah,and then turn around and head back under the Eugene Talmadge Memorial Bridge and past the historic river front.  The tours continue downriver passing the world famous Waving Girl, Florence Martus,through the ship yards and just past the tip of Hutchinson Island and Old Fort Jackson.  There, the boat circles back upriver to arrive gently back at the dock.
