Review of Jon 30

Basic specs..

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

Unknown keel type

The keel is made of lead. Compared with iron, lead has the advantage of being 44% heavier, which allows a smaller keel and hence less water resistance and higher speed.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.70 - 1.80 meter (5.58 - 5.88 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Jon 30 is 1.88, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.5 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Jon 30 is about 147 kg/cm, alternatively 826 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 147 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 826 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

J 30 good boat ? Jeff, please let me know

  • Add to quote

I think I have made my mind about the "new" boat, and the lady seems to like it too. I am looking at a J 30. My budget is 25000 ( thats it, though, I need to get the boat in the water into Lake Carlisle near St Louis and get vc 7 done and so forth inside this budget). What shouldI look for? any problems known ? THANKS Thorsten

J-30''s are complicated to categorize. They, like the earlier J-24, were real pioneers in the evolution of yacht design. In their day they were about as fast as a 30 footer could get. Compared to other 30 foot race boats of that era they required pretty small crews and were very easy to handle. Over the years there have been (and in some areas continues to be)a strong one design class. Because of their one design status, sail makers know how to cut fast sails for these boats and know how these boats should be tuned. The hardware, sails and deck gear on boats that are raced are often in near perfect condition. The fractional rig is really nice for shorthanding. That is all of the good stuff. On the other hand, this was a very early design of its type. They really require a lot of rail weight to keep this boat on its feet under a full sail plan. The deck layout and cockpit are quite exposed and uncomfortable. They offer a nice interior when compared to a modern race boat but it is pretty spartan by cruising boat standards. The earliest ones lack ventilation. Later ones added several opening ports and hatches. These were reasonably well constructed boats but they were pioneers in using balsa cored hulls and so delamination and core rot are distinct possibilities. I have heard of problems with mast steps and keel sumps but I am not clear on what those problems really were. Many of these boats are approaching 20-25 years in age and so have the usual older boat litany of things that might need work.Unless very well maintained and updated by a previous owner (which these boats often are), as with any boat this age, you might expect to need to address some combination of the following items: · Sails, chainplates, mast step and associated suporting structure, standing and running rigging that are beyond their useful lifespan, · an engine that is in need of rebuild or replacement, · worn out or out of date deck, galley, and head hardware, · worn out upholstery, · Out of date safety gear · electronics that are non operational, or in need of updating, · electrical and plumbing systems that need repairs, upgrades to modern standards or replacement. · Blister, fatigue, rudder, hull deck joint or deck coring problems · Keel bolt issues. · And perhaps a whole range of aesthetic issues. As to sailing these boats, while they were fast for their day, their day has passed and of course there are much faster race boats out there. I really don''t like the feel of the helm on these boats, and frankly as a J-30 owner once said to me, compared to later designs sailing a J-30 is about as thrilling as kissing your sister. Still they sail well. They offer good performance in a wide range of conditions. They are reasonably forgiving. I guess to summarize, they are not my idea of an offshore boat but are reasonably good coastal cruisers and racers, they were reasonably well built but many are now starting to show their age, and they are not state of the art race boats but they still are a raceable boat. J/30 seems to fit the bill in a number of areas. One-design fleets, as JeffH mentions, help them keep their value by maintaining a relatively steady market for used boats. You may be able to get away with a trailer behind a big car the yearly haulout (they''re a bit wide for regular road use, as my brother found out while having his boat moved from Texas to Washington state) . My brother had to repair some bulkhead/chainplate water-entry problems, but hasn''t reported any big-ticket items since. He routinely cruises & races with just his wife aboard, though more is merrier. Practical Sailor has a write-up on the J/30 in their Used Boat Buyers Guide that would be worth reading. You can buy the book, or download the article (and/or others) for a price from their website.

Thank you for your kind words. I try to be helpful. In many ways a J-30 might actually be a good boat for what you are doing. The compartively small jibs are easier for a small crew to handle. J-30''s are easier to handle than many of the ''brute strength race boats'' that are out there and for casual racing you might get by with the two of you as long as you are willing to pick the right sail for the conditions meaning stepping down to a #2 or # 3 when things pick up. In many ways a Laser 28 would be a good boat in the light air conditions. I raced mine as a couples boat and it was great in that role. Laser 28''s are easy to tow being 4100 lbs vs the J-30''s 7500, and the Laser is a legal width as well. In a breeze the Laser takes a bit more skill and an understanding how to ''shift gears'' but the nice thing is that all of the tools are there to do so quickly on the fly. Another good choice might be an S2 9.1. These are well rounded boats with good sailing ability in a wide range of conditions. They generally require a stronger crew but if you aren''t racing with a spinacker they can be raced by a couple. Kirby 30''s make good bargain racers and offer a middle ground between the Laser 28 and the J-30. Regards, Jeff

10 New Cruising Sailboats Under 35 Feet

  • By Cruising World Staff
  • Updated: November 3, 2020

It wasn’t so long ago that 30- to 35-foot cruising sailboats were likely to be the largest yachts found in many a harbor. And while 40-something and even 50-something footers are all the rage at boat shows today, there’s a lot to be said for setting sail on a boat big enough to carry family and friends, but still small enough to be easily maintained and handled alone from time to time. Small cruising sailboats are simple to dock or tie up to a mooring, and finding long-term marina space is easier as well.

Choosing a cruising sailboat, no matter the size, is a big decision. And it helps to have a trusted list of boats to get started. Here, then, is a look at 10 of the best daysailers , weekenders and coastal cruising sailboats under 35 feet that are all in production and can be purchased new.

Alerion Sport 30

jon 30 sailboat

A quarter-century ago, Garry Hoyt launched what would come to be known as the daysailer genre with the introduction of the Alerion Express 28, a boat designed by the late Carl Schumacher that featured a minimal interior and a large cockpit where an owner and guests could enjoy the simple joy of sailing. Traditional and lovely looking—but with a quite modern underbody and a powerful sail plan—Hoyt, ever the marketer, proclaimed the boat to be “the prettiest girl at the dance.”

Since then, a number of siblings ranging from 20 to 41 feet have been added to the Alerion family, including the Alerion Sport 30, which retains the graceful sheer line, oval ports and stylish overhangs of the original Schumacher design. Yet with input from naval architect Langan Design Partners, it also embraces a solid measure of performance-oriented DNA.

Bavaria Cruiser 34

jon 30 sailboat

In every Boat of the Year contest, it seems, a boat rises up after sea trials to make a lasting impression on the judges. For 2018, that boat was the Bavaria Cruiser 34.

Says Boat of the Year Judge Tim Murphy, “The Bavaria was a lovely boat to sail. It has a single rudder, and she answered her helm just beautifully in the conditions we had today. We started off with around 10 knots of breeze that built to 13 to 15 knots. As a sailboat, it was just a pleasurable sailing experience, among the best we had during our judging. It was among the boats that felt like a really happy sailing experience.

Beneteau Oceanis 30.1

Beneteau Oceanis 30.1

Sailed as part of the 2020 Boat of the Year sea trials, the 31-foot-3-inch Beneteau Oceanis 30.1 was the compact yacht best-equipped and spec’d out as a dedicated cruising boat, and not coincidentally, it was also awarded the title of Best Performance Cruiser for 2020. But don’t let her cozy interior accommodations fool you; this is also one peppy little vessel.

Dehler 34

The 2017 Boat of the Year (BOTY) contest featured a stellar crop of crossover cruiser/racers; however, when all the testing was said and done, our independent panel of judges was sold on the Dehler 34, naming it the year’s Best Performance Cruiser. Designed by the highly regarded Judel/Vrolijk naval-architecture consortium, whose reputation was fostered by longtime success in international yacht-racing circles, the 34-footer combined contemporary good looks and a sweet turn of speed with better-than-average comfort and accommodations below. It didn’t hurt that the boat, nicely equipped at $215,000, was the least-expensive entry in the entire 2017 fleet. All in all, it proved to be a winning formula.

Dufour Grand Large 360

jon 30 sailboat

Dufour Yachts introduced its new 360 Grand Large model to CW’s Boat of the Year team in 2018 as a coastal cruiser intended for a couple or perhaps a small family. With that in mind, judge Alvah Simon found numerous clever elements to praise within the boat’s 35-foot-2-inch hull—a relatively modest LOA compared to the many 40-, 50- and 60-footers on display at the U.S. Sailboat show in Annapolis, Maryland.

After a roughly 10-year hiatus from the U.S. marketplace, the Slovenian builder Elan is back in a big way. For the 2017 Boat of the Year contest, the company launched a pair of new boats in the States, including the Elan E4, a 34-foot-9-inch performance cruiser with an emphasis on performing, designed by renowned British naval architect Rob Humphreys. The brand has been in business for seven decades and lately is perhaps even better known in America for its skis. Not surprisingly, given its complementary product lines—lots of sailors are fine skiers—its boats are as sleek and sporty as its boards.

Grand Soleil 34

Grand Soleil 34

Way back in the 1970s, when the well-known Italian boatyard Grand Soleil was just getting started, its first model was a Finot-designed 34-footer. With over 300 units sold, it was an instant success, and launched the company on an upward trajectory that spanned the intervening decades, mostly with an ongoing series of much larger, more complex racer/cruisers. For 2020, the builder decided to return to its roots with a completely revamped Grand Soleil 34, and it’s a terrific boat.

Value. How does one determine it? Price is most certainly a factor. In the case of new boats, and our Boat of the Year competition, it means something more. As sailors, we wish to recognize good boats that not only are affordable but offer other, tangible rewards. The ability to get couples and families out on the water, to have a weekend escape, to take them on coastal vacations and even maybe a sabbatical to the islands, all without breaking the bank. For 2019, the judging panel determined that one boat had the potential to do these things better than the rest, which is why they awarded the Best Value prize to the Hanse 348.

With a price tag under $200,000, during sea trials the Hanse 348 wowed the judging team from the get-go. “In only about 8 knots of breeze, we were seeing 5.7 knots upwind and pointing very nicely, and even registered 6.5 knots once we cracked off,” said Tim Murphy. “It’s a pretty sweet little boat.”

Italia 9.98

Italia 9.98

Of the performance cruisers that made their North American debut in 2020, in terms of sheer appearance, the futuristic 34-foot Italia 9.98 was easily the most distinctive. There are actually two versions of the boat: the 34 Club—which is the cruising alternative, the primary features of which are its twin wheels—and the 34 Fuoriserie—the racing model, and the one we tested, with its tiller steering being the identifying characteristic.

J/99

Beginning with the popular little J/24 way back in 1977, J/Boats has become famous for its steady introduction of terrific racing and cruising boats, almost all of which shared one main characteristic: They sailed like a witch. More than four decades later, having built more than 50 separate, mind-boggling models, the Johnstone family that designs, markets and sells the brand shows no signs of slowing down. Their latest offering, for 2020, was another fast and fun racer/cruiser: the 32-foot-7-inch J/99.

  • What Is a Jon Boat?
  • What is a Jon Boat used for?
  • What are the disadvantages of a jon boat?

Jon boats are used for:

  • Boating in calm and shallow water
  • Duck Hunting

Jon boats are used for a wide range of activities, making them essential for outdoor enthusiasts. Primarily, they are popular among anglers who appreciate the boat's stability and ample space, which allows for a variety of fishing and gear setups. Hunters also find jon boats invaluable, especially in wetlands and marshlands, where the boats' shallow draft provides easy access to remote hunting spots. Beyond fishing and hunting, jon boats serve as reliable transportation for exploring remote waterways and bringing supplies to and from cabins or campsites. They are also excellent for leisurely activities like sightseeing and family outings on tranquil lakes and rivers, providing a durable and stable platform for all types of water adventures. The simplicity and versatility of jon boats make them a trusted vessel for anyone looking to enjoy nature from the water.

While jon boats offer advantages and access to the water, they’re not without shortcomings. One consideration is their limited tolerance for rougher water. Due to their flat-bottomed design, jon boats aren’t the best in choppy, making them less ideal for wide open water or large, windy lakes. Additionally, the simplistic and open design provides ample interior space, but also limited protection from the elements. Compared to other types of boats, jon boats generally have lower horsepower ratings, but this also means they’re less expensive than most boats. Despite these disadvantages, jon boats remain a popular choice for many due to their versatility and practicality in calm and shallow waters.

Worthy of what? Racing, coastal cruising, crossing oceans? What is your intended use?

Helpful

You have the C&C 30 but not the 27. You don't indicate which Mk# of the 30 either, there is a significant difference between the Mk I and Mk II. The Mk II is a much more modern boat. The MK I is a scaled up version of the C&C 27 Mk I - IV. By most counts the C&C 27 Mk I through IV is a better boat than the C&C 30 Mk I. The 27 Mk V is a different boat. I owned a C&C 27 Mk II for almost 20 years, cruising and racing. It was a fantastic blend of performance and comfort in a 1970s 27 footer. There is a very good reason close to 1000 boats were produced - the boat sails very well (even compared to today's similar sized cruiser/racers) and is comfortable for a family of 4 for an extended weekend cruise. If you are looking at the C&C 27 see if you can find a Mk III or Mk IV, they added a couple of feet to the mast and stretched the water line out which improved performance with no negative impacts. The nicest boat under 30' I have been on was a Mirage 29. What a great layout and decent sailing. If you are looking for a good performing, comfortable cruising boat under 30', the Mirage 29 should be at the top of the list to check out. The Pearson 30 Flyer is a very different beast. If you want the best bang for the buck in performance this would be a good choice, but not a comfortable cruising boat. You have an extremely diverse set of boats in that list. Comparing a Frers 30 to a Morgan Out Island 28 would be ridiculous. Narrowing down you criteria before going any further would be a good idea. Sailboatdata.com has a refine search feature where you could play with values like SA/D and Disp/Length. If you want stability look for a low Capsize Ratio (under 2), if you want more performance look for higher SA/D.

FastOlson

Club racing? Cruising? Day sailing? Trailer or no trailer? Budget?? 30' waterline length or overall length? Year?

@DArcy Thanks for the tips on the different revisions of the C&C boats! This is exactly the insight I was hoping for! @FastOlson I'm shocked that I missed all of the Ericsons! I'll definitely check out the Olson Budget is 30k, preferably closer to 20k. Slip costs double if I go over 30' LOA, otherwise I'd be buying something bigger in a heartbeat. The main reason for the upgrade is comfort in heavier waves. Anything over 2-2.5' and less than 3 seconds apart is uncomfortable in an O'Day 25. It's also pretty slow, especially when it's dragging two props in the water (one of many items to fix on the to-do list). It would be used as a daysailor with occasional over nighting. I love heavy weather sailing. Enclosed head is a must. Trailer is nice but not essential. Inboard is nearly essential. I'd lean more towards gas as I'm more familiar with them but I'm open to diesel. With that said I have sailed on an Apache 37 and it was a dream. The waves were as high as our heads and we were sitting around chatting like the water was flat. It was also much faster than my O'Day. The Atomic 30 was incredibly quiet. I also did a sea trial of a Catalina 30 TRBS. It was much more comfortable than the O'Day. It sailed nicely and the interior is fantastic. I've been compiling specs based on the listings on Sailboat Guide — Discover your dream boat . I'm trying to familiarize myself with the specs and what they mean. How much emphasis should I put on their "comfort ratio"? I'm guessing hull speed, SA/Displacement I'm guessing aren't the only specs related to performance. How is it that a boat with a longer longer waterline (and more wetted surface) has better performance?

Obsessiion

The Mariner 28 was well built and pretty comfortable.

shemandr

It's an interesting list for a couple of reasons. Foremost to me is that there is hardly a boat on it that is still in production. Has the industry abandoned the 30' performance cruiser market? You can find 30' sport boats but I'm having trouble thinking of a performance cruiser. You would be hard pressed to find a way to spend 30 K on many of those. If the OP wants inward power he should probably budget for a re-power right off the bat for many of the boats of that vintage. The best boat I ever went out bashing waves in is the C&C 27 Mark 1(Although I'm not sure it was called the Mark 1). The owner and I went out on a crappy day in our foulies, a more than adequate supply of beer, and slammed into waves for hours longer than made any sense. The boat didn't mind a bit. And it was fun.

Scott T-Bird

Scott T-Bird

If your boat is for heavy weather on Lake Michigan, I would eliminate all boats on your list under 30' unless they are full keel and comfort factor over 20. If you like performance and single-handing, then expand the list and eliminate the ones that are built more for comfort. Your list seems to be indiscriminate and scattered across a broad range of priorities. I'll suggest that you should not dismiss Starwind 27 (masthead rig) or Precision 27 or 28 (fractional rigs). These boats have a very good design pedigree and I would choose them over many of the similar-sized boats on your list. But reality dictates that you will be limited to the models that are conveniently located for sale and, of course, condition, condition, condition usually dictates the best purchase opportunities.

I'm biased, but you could add the Yamaha 30 to your list. They're not common, but owners love them.

Asking which boats should be in a "best under 30'" list is just one step away from the dreaded "should I varnish or let the teak go natural?" thread!

Alan Gomes said: Pretty much all the boats we are talking about here were "built to a price." My Ericson, which for whatever reason has a reputation as being a cut above other boats build in the 70's and 80's, most certainly was. This becomes evident when you start tearing into it to retrofit and/or correct some of the cost-savings measures done by the builders. While it's true that some brands were worse than others--and often this varied by model year, depending upon what was happening at the company at the time--we shouldn't kid ourselves about this. The easiest way to get into boating is with a jon boat. They’re simple, inexpensive, efficient, and easy to own. A jon boat has a square bow and stern with a flat bottom, providing tons of room on a stable platform. Most jon boats are made out of aluminum, which is more durable than fiberglass or wood. Not only are jon boats great for fishing and hunting, but they are easy to transport and store. With fewer features, jon boats don’t require extensive maintenance. You can tow a jon boat with a small car, power it with a smaller engine, customize the boat to your needs and use it in backwaters, bays, rivers, and other sheltered water. The most fool-proof way to learn the ropes of boat ownership is with one of the best jon boats on the water.

Best Overall: Tracker Grizzly 2072

  • Best for Shallow Water : Crestliner 1860 Retriever CC Tunnel
  • Best Lightweight : Lowe 1648M
  • Best 10-foot :  Lund 1040
  • Best for the Money : Sun Dolphin Pro 120

Things to Consider Before Buying a Jon Boat

With jon boats, the key consideration is convenience. Owning a jon boat is supposed to be simple. The basic features, sturdy construction, and low price are a big draw for new and experienced boaters. When choosing the best jon boat, be sure to pick a boat that fits into your life and makes it easy to get on the water.

Transport and Storage

Jon boats are lighter and smaller than other types of boats, so they are easier to transport and store. You can load the simplest jon boat into a pickup truck bed or even onto cartop roof racks.

Most jon boats require a trailer. However, most jon boats don’t require a twin-axle trailer with brakes. Not only is a smaller trailer easier to maintain, but a single-axle trailer without brakes doesn’t have to pass an annual safety inspection in many states. That’s easy rolling with less trouble.

Sturdy Construction

The best jon boats are built tough as a tank. Heavy gauge aluminum and welded seams mean a jon boat can take a beating. Some jon boats are built of polyethylene plastic, which is super tough, light, and easy to repair.

The simplest jon boats are nothing more than a hull and bench seats with a tiller-drive motor. Better jon boats have a bow casting platform, comfortable seats, gear storage and a live well. The best jon boats feature a center or side console and rigging for a trolling motor.

The best thing about a jon boat is the price. These boats are not only less expensive to purchase but also cheaper to operate.

Jon boats have a flat hull, so they require a smaller engine. Not only does a smaller engine cut the purchase price, but the savings continue at the fuel dock.

Best of all, a jon boat saves time and money after every fishing trip. My fiberglass boat requires a thorough wash each trip and regular use of the best boat waxes and polishing to protect the finish. No such worries with an aluminum jon boat; I just rinse off the mud and salt and hit it with a scrub brush every few trips. You can also build your own boat any way you like.

While a jon boat doesn’t have sexy lines and sparkles like a fancy bass boat, their utilitarian design, economic efficiency, and ease of ownership endear these tough boats to anglers looking to get on the water without all the hassle.

Key Features

  • Length: 21 feet 5 inches
  • Width: 8 feet 3 inches
  • Dry Weight: 1480 pounds

Why It Made The Cut

The Cadillac of jon boats with rod storage, live well, pedestal seats, and center console, the Tracker Grizzly 2072 is my pick for the best overall jon boat.

  • Heavy-duty construction
  • Loaded with features
  • Single axle trailer
  • Limited seating options

Product Description

With all the features of a bass boat in a lightweight package, the Tracker’s Grizzly 2072 still retains the durability and convenience of a jon boat. The heavy-duty aluminum hull and floor are welded to sturdy ribs for a solid ride in snotty weather. Rocks, stumps, docks, and oyster tumps are no match for this jon boat. Despite the mud and slime, the Grizzly still has the amenities of a civilized bass or bay boat. A huge live well, ample rod storage, and four below-deck gearboxes make it easy to fish and hunt and still comfortable for family picnics on the sandbar. If you’re a fan of jon boats, the Tracker Grizzly 2072 is the best jon boat overall.

Best for Shallow Water: Crestliner 1860 Retriever CC Tunnel

  • Length: 18 feet
  • Width: 85 inches
  • Dry Weight: 970 pounds

A tunnel hull and jet motor carry the Crestliner 1860 Retriever to places other boats can’t go.

  • Tunnel hull
  • Full feature
  • Cool colors

An aluminum jon boat is darn-near indestructible, perfect for exploring shallow water and heavy structure. To reach the gnarliest fishing holes where the biggest fish hide, Crestliner 1860 Retriever combines the durability of a jon boat with the shallow draft of a tunnel hull and jet motor. But this stumpknocker has a refined side with a casting deck, center console, rod, gear storage, and a live well. Crestliner offers a long list of options to customize the Retriever to your vision for the best shallow-water jon boat. My favorite feature is the cool color and camouflage options, and I can’t choose which look I like best.

Best Lightweight: Lowe 1648M

  • Length: 15 feet 8.5 inches
  • Width: 70 inches
  • Dry Weight: 275 pounds

Just the basics with a cherry on top, the classic Lowe 1648M is 16-feet long and only weighs 275 pounds.

  • Three seats
  • live well and storage compartment
  • Reinforced transom and floor
  • Motor not included

The Lowe 1648M has fewer features with heavy-duty construction for anglers looking to cut weight while maintaining performance. Nine stringers and a reinforced floor help the 1648 withstand the worst conditions. Two bench seats and a forward platform add to the solid feel. Of course, the best lightweight jon boat only has basic, but you can add a full array of electronics, trolling motor, and seats to improve comfort and fishability. Carry handles in the bow and stern mean this boat is ready to go anywhere. The cherry on top is a combination live well and storage compartment in the center seat. When the live well isn’t keeping your tournament stringer fresh, it provides dry storage for tackle and hunting gear. On the best jon boats, when the waves kick up, dry storage is a premium.

Best 10-foot:  Lund 1040

  • Length: 10 feet
  • Width: 56 inches
  • Dry Weight: 87 pounds

Utility and performance, the Lund 1040 is a jon boat you can throw in the back of the truck or on the cartop and take anywhere.

  • Only 87 pounds
  • Max Horsepower: 5
  • Three bench seats
  • Only one color option

A little boat with big boat performance, it’s hard to believe the Lund 1040 is only 10 feet long and 87 pounds. That’s smaller and lighter than some fishing kayaks. However, the performance of a sturdy, rigid aluminum hull and three bench seats gives the 1040 the capacity and versatility to win the award for best 10-foot jon boat. Pair the 1040 with a five-horsepower gas or electric outboard or a tiller-drive trolling motor, and you’re off to the races. Then, switch to push pole or rowing with oars to silently navigate shallow water. The 1040 has room for two anglers and a ton of fishing gear or a hunter, his dog, and decoy spread. At the end of the day, transport the 1040 in a truck bed or cartop and store the boat in the garage. In recent years, jon boats have gotten fancy, but the Lund 1040 takes the boat back to its roots.

Best for the Money: Sun Dolphin Pro 120

  • Length: 11 feet 3 inches
  • Width: 62 inches
  • Dry Weight: 238 pound

Good things come in small packages. The Sun Dolphin Pro 120 packs a live well, pedestal seats, gear storage, and fuel tank storage into a 12-foot jon boat.

  • Reinforced hull
  • Prewired for trolling motor
  • Below deck storage for tackle and one of the best boat coolers

I have a buddy who posts photos on social media of big bass he catches in his neighborhood pond. The key to his success is a small, plastic jon boat with an electric trolling motor. As our pick for the best jon boat for the money, the Sun Dolphin Pro 120 is ready to access areas off-limits to bigger boats with the same comfort and convenience of a full-size jon boat. Somehow, Sun Dolphin packed a ton of features into the Pro 120 and still keeps the boat small enough to carry in a pickup truck bed. In addition to two comfortable pedestal seats, the Pro 120 has three drainable below-deck storage boxes in the bow. In the stern, there is space to store a battery and a fuel tank. The boat is pre-rigged to run a tiller-controlled trolling motor. Sun Dolphin Pro 120 goes to extra lengths to maintain performance in a plastic jon boat. The deck is made of ¾-inch pressure-treated plywood covered in all-weather carpet. To further increase stiffness, the hull is reinforced with aluminum stringers. Fish with confidence, the little boat sits on a tri-hull with three pontoons to improve stability. Anglers looking to sneak into hidden and hard-to-reach fishing spots get the convenience of a jon boat at the price of a fishing kayak.

A flat hull is one of the defining features of a jon boat. A flat hull reduces draft and increases stability. Jon boats are one of the most stable boats on the water. Lean from side to side or move from bow to stern, and the jon boat stays planted. The disadvantage to a shallow draft comes in rough water performance. Wind will blow a jon boat across the water, and the flat hull slams through waves. But, for anglers looking for a stable fishing platform, you can’t beat a jon boat.

controlled by the state’s wildlife department or department of motor vehicles. The process involves filling out paperwork and paying a fee. You will receive a sticker and numbers that are affixed to the boat. Even if the boat is propelled with an electric trolling motor, it probably needs to be registered. Make a note that safety equipment is also different for motor boats and human-propelled boats. Adding a motor requires navigation lights, life vests, throwables, and other gear. Check with the US Coast Guard about the necessary safety gear for your boat.

Jon boat prices vary widely and can cost around $1,000 to $20,000.

Final Thoughts

Jon boats have come a long way from their simple, utilitarian roots. Today, jon boats feature all the comfort and convenience of a bay boat or bass boat at half the cost. A great example of the best jon boat overall is the Tracker Grizzly 2072. Measuring almost 21-feet long and over eight feet wide, this is the mac daddy jon boat. Still, the welded aluminum hull keeps weight down and reduces the boat’s draft. Including all the good parts of a bigger boat in an easy-to-operate jon boat is why the Tracker Grizzly 2072 is my pick for the best jon boat overall.

Methodology

Spend some time on a jon boat, and it doesn’t take long to notice the positive and negative qualities. Jon boats are fun to operate, cheap to own, and almost impossible to damage. But, the flat-bottom, square-bow boats can also be a rough ride in rough weather. The best jon boats are designed to slide over calm water. Storage is another issue. I chose jon boats with below-deck storage for tackle and gear. Just because I’m fishing or hunting from a jon boat doesn’t mean I don’t need the best amenities: modern jon boats include cold storage and live well. Jon boats with bench seats are notorious for being uncomfortable; I looked for the best jon boats with great seating options. Mostly, a jon boat is versatile. Whether you are hunting, fishing or enjoying family time, bouncing around in one the best jon boats is fun for everyone.

Funeral home owners accused of abusing 190+ bodies change pleas on federal wire fraud charges

jon 30 sailboat

DENVER, Colo. — Jon and Carie Hallford, co-owners of the Return to Nature funeral home, accepted a plea deal in a federal court hearing.

The documents obtained by News5 Saturday showed attorneys for Jon and Carie Hallford filed the requests on Thursday and asked the court to vacate the trial date set for Oct.15.

At the time, a United States attorney told victims' families under federal sentencing guidelines, the two could face 15 years in prison .

WATCH: Return to Nature victims hear about potential federal plea agreement

The couple was arrested in April by FBI agents after being indicted by a grand jury on felony wire fraud charges . According to the federal court documents at the time, the two-faced 13 federal charges for Wire Fraud and Aiding and Abetting and 2 federal charges for Conspiracy to Commit Wire Fraud.

News5 previously reported that victim's families were notified about a federal plea deal extended to the couple last month, outlining a possible 15-year prison sentence.

They each face 260 state counts in the criminal case brought by the 4th Judicial District Attorney's Office. The charges include abuse of a corpse, money laundering, theft, and forgery. A plea deal in that case is still on the table.

The Hallfords were originally arrested in Oklahoma in November of 2023 at a house belonging to Jon's parents, according to investigators. Investigators said they discovered around 190 decomposing bodies inside the couple's funeral home in Penrose in October.
