Hatteras Yachts GT65 Carolina Review

The Hatteras Yachts GT65 Carolina has some design changes from its GT siblings. The flybridge is pushed back a little, in a design nod to earlier Hatteras sport-fish yachts. There are newly designed side windows, and the engine-room side vents are longer. But the GT65 retains the series’ trademarks, such as generous bow flare, seakeeping ability and fish-raising muscle.

The owner of our test boat, Rascal , is a seasoned yachtsman, angler and family man who considered all of these attributes in his purchase. He worked as a mate on fishing boats when he was younger and has always been around boats with his family. Having owned several Hatteras sport-fish yachts, he decided the GT65 Carolina was the next logical move.

Rascal’s captain, Nick Millsap, has worked with the owner for five years and says the GT65 Carolina exceeded expectations. On the initial cruise to meet the owner, Millsap says, the GT65 had “a great dry ride, even into the head seas. It was rough, but the ride was awesome.”

The GT65 has a 194-square-foot cockpit, and there is room to swivel the combination fighting chair/rocket launcher in any direction on a frenetic marlin. Mezzanine seating to port has air conditioning to keep guests and line watchers cool. A stainless-steel freezer box is under the seat. Beneath the footrests are chilled boxes for refreshments.

To starboard is a tackle center with a prep station and eight drawers. The drawers have stainless-steel bottoms with holes for drainage and ventilation. An electric grill can be installed on top of the unit.

An in-deck ice maker produces not cubes but cylindrical ice, so it lasts longer and can touch more surfaces, keeping the catch fresher. The in-transom livewell can be fitted out with tuna tubes. Teak coaming boards add panache, while the lack of teak in the cockpit eases cleanup and maintenance.

For all its angling focus in the cockpit, the GT65 has yacht-level elegance inside. High-gloss teak is used for the cabinets and furnishings. Complementing the wood are light fabric headliners with teak accents, as well as a vinyl-plank sole for durability. An L-shaped sofa to port is plush and has stowage below each section.

Rascal’s layout has a galley island with two bar stools, a setup that creates multiple ways to move in and around the galley, and that makes more space for several folks to enjoy meals. The standard galley layout is a peninsula form, creating a U-shaped countertop with room for one more bar stool. Either way, the galley has fridge and freezer drawers; a microwave; a four-burner electric cooktop; stowage for pots, pans and dishes; and pantries and cabinets with matching grain. An elevated U-shaped dinette to port has underseat stowage and a teak table.

Belowdecks is a four-stateroom, three-head layout. All spaces have 6-foot-8-inch to 7-foot-1-inch headroom. The amidships en suite stateroom has a queen walk-around berth, nightstands, a full-size closet and drawers. The forward VIP can have a queen-size centerline berth or a 60/40 split berth. The two remaining staterooms have upper and lower berths.

Owners can convert one of the staterooms to a Hatteras Integrated Tackle Storage room, with gear cabinets and rig-prepping counter space. For the competing crew, the washer and dryer in the companionway should come in handy during tournament season.

To minimize maintenance, most all of the high-gloss teak finishes on the exterior can be painted in a faux-teak finish. It looks as close to real as you’ll get, without the need for varnishing.

The Hatteras GT65 Carolina’s four-stateroom, three-head interior layout maximizes the boat’s additional volume in both living and storage space. The ensuite master stateroom is the largest in its class, but guests billeted in the forward VIP will not feel slighted in the least. Two big bunk rooms allow owners to bring along a big team of anglers and crew.

The Hatteras GT65 Carolina’s key advantage over the competition lies in its new hull and tunnel design. DESCRIPTION

The GT65’s profile features the classic stepped-back bridge, a new teardrop-shaped window design and hull side vents. New variable-deadrise hull bottom with side step-outs and prop tunnels were designed using cutting edge computational fluid dynamics for greater performance and efficiency. New engine room layout allows space for Seakeeper 9 gyrostabilizers. The new GT65 Carolina replaced one of Hatteras’ most popular convertibles, the GT63. As with all Hatteras GT Series sportfish convertible construction, the hull and stringer system are infused in a single part for added strength, durability, and less weight. High freeboard and Carolina bow flare keep the ride dry.

Both the GT59 and GT65 feature salon and galley on the same level for an open, spacious area to relax or entertain. The aft port L-shaped sofa with storage beneath each section, wraps a coffee table; standard peninsula galley is opposite the raised dinette to port. Pop-up TV is in high-gloss teak cabinetry to starboard. Three bar stools on the galley peninsula counter provide another dining option.

The galley can also be configured with an island counter and two barstools. The center companionway leads to the yacht-quality four-stateroom, three-head accommodations for multi-day fishing excursions with a large crew or family cruises. Master with walk-around queen berth and ensuite head is largest in its class. The fourth stateroom can be converted into a Hatteras Integrated Tackle Storage room. Rod and reel stowage locker and a marine washer and dryer are located in companionway.

Generous 194 sq ft cockpit features a transom livewell that can be fitted with tuna tubes, bait freezer under the mezzanine seat and beverage chill box beneath the mezzanine footrests. Tackle storage cabinet is starboard forward beneath angled flybridge ladder (an optional electric grill can be added to tackle cabinet top). In-deck fish boxes with pump-outs and macerators are common to all the GT series convertibles, as are the multiple flush-mounted gunwale rod holders, hardtop, and pipework rocket launchers. Mezzanine seat back can be air-conditioned for a more comfortable experience for guests or line-watchers on hot days.

Typical of a convertible sportfish yacht this size, the air-conditioned center console helm has a raised panel for three navigation panels, lounges on both sides, and great visibility all around. Two helm chairs are standard; a third chair can be added—the backing plate is already built-in. A large lounge is forward of the console with space beneath for an optional seven cubic ft freezer or fridge. Towers with additional electronics and other fishing equipment, such as outriggers are owner options. In fact, the new GT Series of convertibles offered by Hatteras are all highly customizable by owners, especially the fishing features.

The Hatteras GT65 Carolina is 68’2” LOA with a wide 20’ beam. Deep prop pockets keep the draft to 5’. Displacement is 103,000 lbs. Standard fuel capacity is 1,900 gallons and water capacity is 270 gallons. Twin 1600HP C32A Caterpillar engines are standard but can be upgraded to twin 1800 or 1900 engines.

The company worked with experienced tournament fishers to design a vessel that pushes the boundaries in terms of seaworthiness, angling prowess and efficiency, not to mention comfort and style. A super-sharp entry, a Carolina flare to the bow, elongated engine vents, new wrap-around windows, a stepped back bridge and sleek lines present a serene profile that hides this yacht’s muscular blue-water credentials, hardcore fishing amenities and deluxe hand-finished interiors.

The tournament experience just wouldn’t be the same without a lofty tuna tower, and this Hatteras comes fitted with a Pipewelders tower as standard for a vertiginous fish-finding vantage point. Plenty more can enjoy elevated views from this yacht’s ergonomically-styled flybridge, where a pair of leather chaise-longues and a forward loveseat are joined by two adjustable Release Marine piloting seats. You will also find a walk-around, center-console helm station up here, fitted with Garmin touch-screen panels, a Hatt/CON monitoring system, Side Power bow thruster controls, a teak helm pod, VHF radio and Miya Epoch teaser reels.

Yet you will probably find experienced fishers spend most of their time aboard the GT65 Carolina in the teak-lined aft-cockpit, where 194-square feet of dedicated fishing space awaits. Back here you will find an Eskimo ice-chipper, macerator-equipped fish boxes, transom storage, a livewell fed by Pentair pool pumps, an integrated bait-prep center, a transom lift-gate, reel outlets, rod holders and a floor plate for a fighting chair or rocket launcher. There is also a mezzanine level with chilled drinks storage, a three-seater sofa and an integral speaker system back here so that guests do not have to miss out on the action.

Hatteras are known for the splendid quality of their interiors and this yacht shows exactly why. A sedate salon lined in glossy teak or grey oak features a starboard-side home entertainment system and plenty of cabinetry, while to port there is an L-shaped lounge sofa in plush leather that connects to a U-shaped dining sofa with a breakfast table. Also to be found in here is an open galley with a serving island, granite or Corian work surfaces, a Sharp combination oven, a Miele hob, under-counter fridge-freezer units and a stainless-steel sink. This entire space benefits from panoramic side glazing and recessed mood lighting to maintain a light and breezy feel.

Though lower-deck spaces lack hull windows the entire space has been studded with skylights to flood these rooms with natural light. On this level you will find room for up to eight overnight guests across a port-side bunk berth, an en-suite bunk cabin, an en-suite double stateroom to the bow and an amidship owner’s suite. This owner’s room features a sofa, side cabinets, a full-height closet, a king-sized bed, bedside cabinets, plush carpeting and a bathroom with a shower cubicle.

An infused hull and stringer system with improved prop tunnels reduces weight and improves durability in an industry-wide first, while the optional installation of a Seakeeper 9 stabilizer eliminates roll while stationery in tuna-rich waters. The GT65 Carolina comes fitted with a pair of CAT C32 Acert 1600MHP diesel engines for top speeds that fly past the 40-knot barrier, while at cruising speeds of 30 knots the yacht can cover some 400 nautical miles with ease.
