HELMSMAN TRAWLERS®  are solidly built and finely-crafted motor yachts. Models range from the pocket trawler class Helmsman 31 sedan to our new Expedition 46 Pilothouse.  Helmsman Trawlers’ pilothouse and sedan trawler yacht designs provide roomy and comfortable interiors, rich in fine woodwork and evocative of classic yachts while modern in every way -- and suited for both cruisers and liveaboards.

Helmsman Trawlers® are crafted to please the most discerning owners, though are surprisingly affordable. With modern wide-beam hull designs, top name equipment, and fit-and-finish achievable only with labor-intensive craftsmanship, they are a prize choice for those who won’t compromise quality but have no desire to pay too much. The Helmsman Trawlers® factory has considerable experience in the construction of these fine yachts, offers many options, and can expertly accommodate custom modifications.

The hulls of Helmsman Trawlers are robustly constructed of solid fiberglass using modern fiberglass hull construction techniques. Other FRP elements are manufactured using vacuum infusion. Full keels provide capable sea-keeping ability and modern diesel engines provide dependable long-range performance and trouble-free maintenance. Multi-layered construction of interior decks with sound attenuating elements reduce engine noise, and new insulation in our 38E and 43 models helps control temperature and deadens exterior sounds.

Helmsman Trawlers® most popular yacht is the 38E Pilothouse Trawler. This boat offers the spaciousness of a much larger boat while fitting into a 40-foot slip. The low-rise pilothouse has excellent visibility and open communication with the salon and is a social area too while underway or in port. The full-beam salon is expansive and comfortable, with exceptional light and ventilation. A day head is a rare and practical feature, and the convertible settee and day head can be enclosed to provide a private suite for guests when needed. The flybridge is set back to maintain a low profile – which benefits windage and center-of-gravity. A high, flush bow, sturdy railings, full covered cockpit, deep pilothouse side deck footwells and secure flybridge stairs on both sides increase practicality and safety in adverse conditions.

The Helmsman Trawlers 43 Pilothouse is in steady production. This yacht design is derived from our 38 Pilothouse Trawler and expanded in every dimension. With the additional volume achieved from a longer and wider hull and additional freeboard we’ve added a second stateroom, expanded the salon, added more interior seating, and increased the cockpit area.

We are pleased to offer the Helmsman Trawlers® 31 Sedan – an update to the original Camano 31. The Camano, with over 270 built, is well-known for many reasons including its outstanding hull design with great sea-keeping characteristics and economy through a wide range of cruising speeds. Helmsman Trawlers® has updated the lines on this boat, completely redesigned the interior, and has created a true pocket trawler yacht offered at an affordable price.

The Helmsman Trawlers® 37 is built on the same hull as the 38E and is available in one or two stateroom versions for cruisers who prefer the classic Europa-style lines and walkaround decks.

We are also excited to introduce the Helmsman Trawlers®46 Expedition Pilothouse – an expedition trawler yacht for the long-range cruiser and explorer.

We appreciate your interest in Helmsman Trawlers®. Please feel free to contact us – we wish to be helpful in any way and welcome the opportunity to talk about these fine trawler yachts.

The Best Boats Built By Shipyards In The United States

Ten american made yachts for sale with denison yachting..

Most American shoppers are drawn to supporting American industry and business. About two-thirds of Americans are willing to pay more for US-made products over imports, according to a national survey . While Europe is known for its centuries-old yachting industry, the United States is home to some of the world’s most premier yacht builders including Broward Marine , Westport , Burger , and Hatteras . Here are 10 American made yachts for sale with Denison Yachting. These boats are built to last.

1. 157′ Palmer Johnson 1983

us built motor yachts

Palmer Johnson has a long history of building the world’s most innovative yachts — 207 years to be exact. Their yachts have distinct traits that include an accentuated center line, perfect symmetry, and a sweeping signature curve.

ARABELLA is a one of a kind, iconic 157′ tri-masted staysail schooner custom built by Palmer Johnson in Wisconsin. She was originally built in 1983 but underwent a hull extension to bring her up to USCG Standards in 2000. Not only is ARABELLA a classic beauty, but she also offers the best modern conveniences for sailing, including automated rigging, running gear, navigational equipment, and a single inboard 500HP Caterpillar. Any outing on her is as memorable as this classic beauty herself.

Notable feature: ARABELLA’S current configuration works as a dual platform. She can run as a large multiple guest charter operation or as a private vessel with comfortable accommodations for large groups. She is USCG Certified for 40 overnight guests underway while also accommodating 9 crew members.

Contact Denison yacht broker Patrick Hopkins to inquire about this yacht.

2. 130′ Westport 2007

us built motor yachts

Westport is an American company founded in 1964 with a heritage that comes from the necessity to build a boat that could be fast and efficient in very rough seas. Being in the Pacific Northwest created challenges that defined their lineage from tried and true commercial vessels to fiberglass and composite motor yachts.

PLAN A is a 130’ Westport with an interior layout that can sleep up to 10 guests in 5 staterooms, including a master suite, 3 double cabins, and 1 twin cabin. She’s also able to carry up to 8 crew onboard. This American made yacht embodies timeless styling, beautiful furnishings, and plenty of seating around the boat to create a social and comfortable atmosphere.

Notable feature: The flybridge jacuzzi is a cozy spot to enjoy a sunset cocktail on the water.

Contact Denison yacht broker JD Ducanes to inquire about this yacht.

3. 125′ Broward 1989

us built motor yachts

Frank Denison founded Broward Marine in 1948 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The company began building some of the finest yachts for the world’s premiere yachtsmen. Frank and his design team developed hull designs that became known and respected for being seaworthy, efficient, and beautiful. The Denison family was proud of the fact that no two Broward yachts were built the same.

CHIMERA , a 125’ Broward was built in 1989. This classic American tri-deck was the first Broward to be ABS certified and remains fully in class. As soon as you walk onboard you are immediately struck by her spaciousness, which is much more than you would expect from a vessel of this size. She underwent a complete transformation in 2018 and her entire interior was replaced with modern and stylish fabrics and materials and her exterior was painted navy blue. This classic Broward motor yacht is currently for sale in Fort Lauderdale.

Notable feature: The sky lounge with a full wet bar, flat-screen TV, and comfortable seating area.

Contact Denison yacht broker Kurt Bosshardt to inquire about this yacht.

4. 81′ Burger 1967

us built motor yachts

Since 1863, Burger has been the foundation of the American yachting experience as the oldest custom yacht builder in the United States. Burger builds exceptional American yachts and that’s evident in JEANNE MARY . This 81’ Burger 1967 has had plenty of upgrades including painted hull and topsides, repowered John Deer engines, and a newly installed generator. Her top featured include a 3 stateroom Layout, 20’6″ beam, and an outdoor kitchen in the cockpit. JEANNE MARY is an excellent example of a classic American boat for sale in Albany, New York.

Notable feature: You’ll notice true craftsmanship and skill throughout this yacht.

5. 74′ Hatteras 1998

us built motor yachts

Over 60 years ago, Willis Slane envisioned a new breed of fishing boat that’s strong enough to tame the waves off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Since then, Hatteras built a reputation for building spacious, comfortable, and seaworthy yachts. ALMOST THERE , a 74 foot Hatteras motor yacht, boasts well-designed interior and exterior social areas with a 4 stateroom layout that can accommodate up to 8 guests. Among this yacht’s specific 2020 upgrades are a new interior refit, new paint job, new flybridge Bimini, and LED lighting throughout the interior. ALMOST THERE is an American made boat for sale in Miami, Florida.

Notable feature: Incredible volume and comfortable exterior spaces to relax throughout this iconic yacht.

Contact Denison yacht broker Justin Onofrietti to inquire about this yacht.

6. 70′ Viking 2015

us built motor yachts

The Viking Yacht Company has celebrated over five decades as a business that builds luxury performance sportfishing and cruising yachts. It was started by brothers Bob and Bill Healey in 1964 when they bought Peterson-Viking Builders, a small, struggling New Jersey builder of 37-foot, wooden sportfishing boats. Then Viking Yachts grew into a world leader in semi-custom fiberglass yacht production with over 4,000 Vikings delivered.

PIPE DREAMER is a special 70-foot Viking sportfish yacht. She’s a head-turner with a sleek aggressive look and a sharp-edged feature line that runs from the front of the house to the cockpit. She tops out over 41 knots thanks to 2,600-hp MTU M94 diesel engines. A 206-square-foot cockpit with a Release Marine fighting chair, an in-deck live well, and a mezzanine bait storage and freezer make PIPE DREAMER one of the most complete blue water fishing packages on the market.

Notable feature: She’s one of the “High Performance” boats that Viking built, with the ability to pull almost 20,000 pounds of weight out by using Kevlar parts and deck house.

Contact Denison yacht broker Mike Burke to inquire about this yacht.

7. 65′ Sea Ray 2015

us built motor yachts

Sea Ray designs and builds boats in Knoxville, Tennessee. Their boats are known for meticulous craftsmanship and effortless performance and can often be found cruising around lakes or along the coasts. KNOT ON CALL is one of the finest Sea Ray Luxury Series L650 vessels on the market, with only 825 hours on her 1150HP Cat C-18 engines. She has expansive outdoor lounging areas, teak flooring in the cockpit and bridge, and spacious interior. Her 4-staterooms, 3-head layout is equipped with a full-beam master, private VIP guest stateroom, plus crew quarter. This vessel is perfect for a family who’s ready to enjoy weekends on the water.

Notable feature: Upgraded bridge storage enclosure and dual gyro stabilizers for a smooth ride.

8. 61′ Bertram 2021

us built motor yachts

Bertram Yachts has a long American heritage. In 1960, founder Richard Bertram built his first powerboat yacht, which laid the foundation for the company. Today, Denison is a Bertram dealer and sells new models including a 50 , 39 , and 35 .

Bertram 61 was built in Florida and revolutionizes the deep-vee hull of the 21st century, paying homage to the iconic Bertram 54. Advanced construction and state-of-the-art propulsion and technology provide unmatched performance, allowing this vessel to run smoother, faster, and shallower than any other boat of this size. She offers a 3 stateroom, 3 head layout, including a full-beam master cabin. The open salon and galley design are optimized for both living space and plentiful storage, featuring a forward panoramic glass window.

Notable feature: The sharp lines and crisp styling will feel familiar to Bertram enthusiasts, but the stunning interior is unlike anything the marine industry has ever experienced, in this category.

Contact Denison yacht broker Gary Hardcastle to inquire about this yacht.

9. 47′ Intrepid 2020

us built motor yachts

Intrepid designs and builds custom made boats for fishing, diving, law enforcement, or yacht tender in South Largo, Florida. The company chases innovation and champions new technologies to lead the industry in performance, comfort, safety, and style. No two Intrepids are alike. BEL SOGNO is an Intrepid 477 Evolution with quad Yamaha 425XTO engines that provide top speeds of over 60 mph. A fold-out hull side beach, swing-in dive door, and cockpit sunshade make her a versatile boat for entertaining guests on day trips.

Notable feature: Equipped with a Seakeeper gyro stabilizer to eliminate boat roll.

Contact Denison yacht broker Drew Offerdahl to inquire about this yacht.

10. 43′ Tiara 2021

us built motor yachts

Tiara Yachts is a premier brand in the marine industry with a shipyard based in Holland, Michigan. This beautiful new 2021 Tiara 43 Open is the only 2021 currently in the water and available on the market. She’s powered by Cummins QSM-11’s with joystick docking and bow and stern thruster. Her full bridge deck enclosure with sliding door and Stidd power seats add a level of comfort when driving this express cruiser. This American made boat is for sale in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Notable feature: Full teak cockpit and upper cockpit complete with Kenyon grill, fridge drawer, and wet bar to enjoy lunch on the water.

One of North America’s top yacht manufacturers, Westport offers a range of yachts in the 112- to 164-foot range

As the largest luxury yacht builder in North America, Westport Yachts has built a reputation for building boats that are the epitome of elegance, comfort and style.

Yacht Chasing Daylight

Today, the yacht builder – based in Washington state – offers a range of top-of-the-line vessels, including 112-, 125-, 130- and 164-foot megayachts.

Westport’s yachts are renowned for their durability, performance and comfort. The company has a commitment to exacting standards – similar to those used in aerospace engineering – and that’s helped Westport earn a reputation for delivering some of the finest crafts on the market.

These superyachts – like the 50-meter Westport 164 – utilize the latest technology, like gyrostabilization, spacious deck layouts, and opulent interior design to ensure supreme comfort while cruising the high seas.

A number of Westport yachts are available for charter through Worldwide Boat, including Westport’s 112-, 130- and 164-foot superyachts.

Westport’s Storied History in Nautical Engineering

Westport has long been a ship builder. In fact, the company was originally launched in 1964, first establishing itself as a producer of fishing boats, passenger ferries and other commercial vessels.

Based in Washington state, Westport was one of the first shipbuilders to popularize the use of composite materials in construction, and today, the Westport remains a leader in composite design and construction. Composite fiberglass – now widely used in yacht construction – maximizes the life of the vessel, while reducing maintenance costs due to its superior sturdiness, and it’s one reason Westport’s yacht are some of the most popular on the market.

To date, Westport has developed 200 different commercial ships and yachts. And in the last three decades, the company is widely recognized as a leader in superyacht construction. Today, Westport specializes in raised-pilothouse and tri-deck motor yachts in the 30-50 meter range.

A Closer Look at the Westport Luxury Yacht Lineup

Westport offers one of the most popular ranges of megayachts in the industry. In particular, the company’s 112-, 130- and 164-foot offerings are top choices among yacht buyers (with a recently introduced 125-foot yacht gaining in popularity, as well).

Here’s a rundown of Westport’s most popular vessels, all of which are available for charter through Worldwide Boat:

  • Westport 112 – Launched in 1993, with many successful redesigns along the way, the 34-meter Westport 112 is the manufacturer’s long-favorite raised pilothouse yacht. (It’s the same model as charter yacht Jopaju , which sails the Caribbean, Cuba and Florida.) The 112 is well-known for its wide beam, which opens results in spacious interiors and a sprawling salon. The 112 features accommodations for up to 8 guests in 4 luxurious ensuite staterooms, as well as an abundance of deck space.
  • Westport 130 – The company’s mid-sized tri-deck, the Westport 130, measures 40 meters. And since its launch in 2009, the 130 has become a favorite choice in the industry for its classic lines and spacious, opulent interiors. Charter yachts Antares and Pipe Dream are both 130s, and feature top-of-the-line finishes throughout. The 130 Westport sleeps 10 in 5 ensuite staterooms.
  • Westport 164 – Westport’s elegant top-of-range Westport 164 offers the best of the best in superyachting. The ship – like charter yacht AQUAVITA – measures 50 meters, and features accommodations for 12 guests in 6 ensuite staterooms. Not only is the 164 spacious, it’s built for superior cruising comfort and performance. The yacht’s gyrostabilizers greatly reduce rolling, and it’s capable of speeds up to 24 knots.

Westport Yachts: Signature Features

What makes Westport Yachts so special? From the immaculate interiors, to the serious performance, Westport’s reputation as a leader in superyacht design is well-earned.

  • High-End Performance – All of Westport’s luxury yachts are built for best-in-class performance. That includes efficient, yet powerful motors – which deliver top speeds of about 25 knots – as well as gyrostabilization and advanced technology.
  • Superior Construction – Westport’s signature composite fiberglass hulls ensure longevity and exterior durability. And the builder is known for its exacting standards. All material and finishes are also carefully selected, with only the finest materials fitted aboard.
  • Opulent Interiors – Westport has a long history of working with the industry’s top interior designers. The Westport 164’s interiors, for example, were outfitted by famed yacht designer Donald Starkey. And the builder offers a range of high-end, best-in-class finishes for its interiors.

Superyacht Cakewalk

At 85.6 metres and 2,998 tonnes, no one would argue that Cakewalk is not something of consequence. She is the largest yacht by volume to come out of the United States and the only US-built yacht that exceeds her length on deck is Corsair IV, launched in 1931.

In 2002, the owner and his family were aboard ‘old Cakewalk ’ – a 62.2 metre yacht built by Feadship – when Carinthia VII pulled into the yacht club at Antibes. The design of that 97metre yacht stopped the owner and captain Bill Zinser in mid-sentence and the image of that moment directed the course of events since.

Even before he saw Carinthia VII , Cakewalk’s owner had already decided that he needed a bigger boat in order to carry larger tenders. Discussions for a new boat began two years later, and by autumn 2005, Zinser had a fairly complete specification. The owner wanted to build the boat in the United States, partly so that it would be possible for him and his wife to visit the project frequently during construction.

The key design element, and the second biggest change from the previous Feadship, would be the profile – and the first call was to Tim Heywood , the designer behind Carinthia VII , with a request to design a new Cakewalk ‘from the rubber gaskets out’. For naval architecture, Hugo van Wieringen, who had been the lead designer on both the previous Cakewalks , signed on to the new project under the mantle of his current company, Azure Naval Architects . The team was joined by Florida-based interior designer Liz Dalton , and momentum grew for US construction.

‘Our decision to build this ambitious project in the US was based on our knowledge of the incredible skill sets available to us in the New York and Connecticut market. Our quality standards are the highest in the industry, and Derecktor assured us they would achieve them,’ notes the owner. Derecktor has 60 years of yacht-building experience and substantial commercial ship experience as well.

When Cakewalk gently floated out of her dry dock on 8 August 2010, ‘achievement’ was an understatement.

While long ends, strong horizontal lines and a sweeping sheer define the profile, the interior brief had several details: a central staircase , an elevator and all guest suites on the main deck. Dalton refined Heywood’s general arrangement around a family and charter-friendly interior and used 3D geometry to create the staircase.

With all six guest suites and a supernumerary cabin on the main deck, the starboard foyer also serves as the entrance to the guest area, where all cabins are equal in size and appointments and open off a centreline corridor 18 metres long. Dalton explored a classic theme in the guest suites, each of which has a different colour scheme.

Wanting to balance the sheer scale and drama Cakewalk’s six cascading decks present from the stern, the aft deck is purposely kept small. Glass doors open not to a cavernous saloon but to a cosy library with a fireplace, intimate seating and a Steinway grand piano. Also carved out of the nearly 170 square metre saloon is the private dining room, which is uniquely designed as a rotunda on centreline.

Between the main and bridge decks is the owners’ deck: a private, seven-room suite. A gymnasium is to port, opposite a yoga studio that doubles as a beauty salon and massage room. Forward of the two bathrooms and dressing rooms is a full-beam sitting room and study while all the way forward, facing windows that sweep 180 degrees, is the owners’ bedroom, its signature element a canopied king-size bed.

At the opposite end of this deck is the primary outdoor dining area, which easily sits 16 at one large table but also has three small tables with combinations of fixed and loose seating. The service bar for this area is within the owners’ saloon, which is also the yacht’s cinema. As with each of the four decks devoted to owner and guest use, this one is served by a pantry of proportions and equipage that would make celebrity chefs jealous.

Most of the bridge deck belongs to operations. Although the bridge is enormous and features three seating areas, auxiliary spaces are really the stars. The captain’s office is arranged with three workstations for visiting service technicians. The crew office is separate from the radio room, both of which are independent from the navigation area where two computing systems run simultaneously for redundancy.

As to the space that drove the entire project, the ‘boathouse’ is aft of the crew area and systems control room on the lower deck. A pair of overhead cranes handle movement of a 11.3 metre Vikal limousine tender also designed by Heywood (and winner of the 2010 ShowBoats Design Award for limousine tenders), a 10 metre Riva Cento and a 10.7 metre Intrepid sportfish. With the extras such as toy stowage and dive gear in other areas, this bright, white climate-controlled area is totally dedicated to tenders and their maintenance.

Mainship Trawlers

Mainship trawlers for sale.

The Most Popular American made trawler, began as a spin-off of the 1978 Silverton Mainship 34 Trawler. In late 1990s, Mainship began focusing exclusively on trawler and downeast designs, ranging from 30 to 43ft. Mainship is well known for providing an excellent value, by using modern low-cost production methods and an extensive list of standard features. This included standard diesel power, no exterior wood work, and deep full walk arounds on trawler models. This is one of the most popular manufacturers seen on The Great Loop.

Mainship Pilots are now manufactured by Marlow Marine at the Marlow-Hunter Marine Plant in Alachua, FL.

They loved it so much they came back for more: this 40-meter superyacht, featuring a high-efficiency hull design, was built for repeat Delta owners. ONIKA embodies the simple elegance and warmth of a true gentleman’s yacht. The Delta Design Group was entrusted with the entire design and engineering package. One of the challenges put forth to the design team was to create a hull for shallow-draft cruising with the same seaworthiness and capabilities as a full-displacement design. And Delta delivered.

Stepping inside, the major focus of detail on the main deck centers on the dramatic entry and central staircase. Cream-colored marble floors with diamond-shaped blue sodalite are contrasted with raised-and-fielded wall panels of Khaya mahogany. Intricately carved wood handrails and metal-adorned newel posts anchor the base of the stairs. This impression of ageless, casual elegance continues through to the formality of the dining and main salon, with coffered beams and beveled-glass pocket doors. Select pieces of the owners’ antique furniture add an Edwardian touch to this indoor gathering space. In addition, both the dining and main salon showcase rare pieces from the owners’ collection of original impressionist art.

The lower deck features paneled walls of clear, straight-grained German Spessart oak, finished naturally in a light honey color. The designers created signature furniture pieces, featuring bow and serpentine shapes meticulously detailed in mahogany and chestnut burl with Anigre inlay. Heads are finished with heated marble floors, with the stone extending up to a wainscot with nautically inspired wall coverings. Other fabrics display a dramatic color panel of rich blue, red, and green jewel tones and textures.

The sky lounge displays the natural beauty of materials and craftsmanship of the yacht. The mixing of traditional components and materials lends a relaxed British West Indies ambiance. Large windows and light colors brighten the space, highlighting a focal antique white German oak bookcase. This is a space for guests to relax, entertain, or play card games among the carefully detailed furniture pieces. A corner quarter-round mahogany bar cabinet with pocket doors sits to one side and a bow-front end table in striped Sapele and Anigre veneer to the other. The loose furniture is soft and casual, upholstered with cotton ikat and patterned fabrics and brass nailheads.

While the interiors are breathtaking, so are ONIKA’S outdoor spaces and decks. Characterized by the same elegance as the interior, the decks flow gracefully from bow to stern. The sun deck is a complete outdoor living space, with forward-facing settees, a dining table for eight, and a bar and TV, as well as room for chaise lounges and an outdoor shower to cool down. A pair of tenders stowed on the aft bridge deck can be launched on either side. On the main deck, there’s dining for six and a lounge that provides the feeling of a comfortable residential setting.

Powered by twin Caterpillar C32 main engines, ONIKA has a 4,000 nautical-mile range at 12 knots and a maximum speed of 16 knots. Quantum Zero Speed stabilizers ensure a nice gentle ride both at anchor and underway. Her Northern Lights generators are equipped with catalytic soot traps for reduced emissions. Her hydraulically activated fold-down mast was custom-designed and -built by Delta.

The World of Motor Yachts: Luxury, Performance, and Freedom

Motor yachts offer a unique combination of power, comfort, and freedom on the water. Designed primarily for pleasure cruising or racing, these impressive vessels put the world at your fingertips.

A Spectrum of Sizes: Finding Your Perfect Motor Yacht

Motor yachts come in different sizes, catering to every desire. From compact and maneuverable models around 33 feet (10 meters) to sprawling luxury palaces exceeding 131 feet (40 meters), there’s a perfect fit for every dream.

Pricing Considerations:

  • Smaller motor yachts (33ft – 50ft) typically range from $500,000 to $3 million.
  • Mid-size yachts (50ft – 80ft) can fall between $3 million and $15 million.
  • Superyachts (over 80ft) enter a whole new pricing category, reaching into the hundreds of millions and beyond, depending on size, customization, and features.

Power and Maneuverability: Taking Control on the Water

Motor yachts usually have two or more motors. This has several advantages:

  • Better Maneuverability: Two engines allow captains to better deal with challenging weather conditions. Thanks to vessel control software systems, it also provides some advantages when docking.
  • Fuel Efficiency and Range: With dual engines and customized fuel tanks, extended cruises at constant speeds with lower fuel consumption are possible. This is where the explorer yacht, designed to roam, even cross the Atlantic, thrives.
  • Shallow Water Access: Unlike deep-keel sailboats, motor yachts have a shallower draft, allowing them to explore beautiful coves and hidden bays inaccessible to other vessels.

The Flybridge Advantage: Elevated Yachting Experience

Many motor yachts, particularly larger models, will also have a flybridge. This offers captains better visibility for navigation, docking, and it provides passengers with higher vistas. Flybridge boats, like the smaller Merry Fisher , have that additional social space, featuring seating areas, wet bars, and sundecks.

Beyond Ownership: Exploring the Charter Option

Chartering offers a fantastic alternative for those seeking a taste of the motor yacht lifestyle without the full commitment of ownership. Chartering allows owners to offset some of the cost of their boats.

In 2020, an estimated 15,000 yachts were exceeding 79 feet available for charter worldwide.

Charter yachts often involve annual maintenance costs of around 15% of the yacht’s value. For vessels valued over $3 million, that’s almost a half million a year!

Our boating editors recently checked out the Miami boat show to understand this decadent market. We found many owners who don’t even get to use their yachts as much as they’d like, so the chartering world makes sense for everyone.

Entering the Realm of Superyachts: Luxury Redefined

The “Commercial Yacht Code” categorizes motor yachts exceeding 79 feet (24 meters) as superyachts and those surpassing 131 feet (40 meters) as mega-yachts. These behemoths represent the pinnacle of luxury yachting, with meticulously crafted interiors, advanced technological marvels, and crew quarters to cater to the owner’s every need. Naturally, these vessels come with exceptionally high construction standards and price tags.

Buying a Motor Yacht

Once you have made a decision to purchase a motor yacht, the next step is to determine exactly what make of motor yacht will best fit your requirements. There are so many different motor yachts, give yourself time to find the right one and ask yourself this.

  • Budget capacity?
  • New or used?
  • What type of user experience do you want out of the vessel?
  • What hull size of motor yacht is best?

Once you have created a shortlist, you can then refine your search. Take time out to go and view in person. Book yourself an experience aboard and head over to your closest marina and speak to owners. Consider these points before purchasing a motor yacht.

  • Pre-book buyer’s sea trials for your shortlist
  • Select the perfect motor yacht
  • Used – get a certified hull survey, safety comes first
  • Get annual insurance quotes
  • Calculate dockage – purchase or rent a slip or dock
  • Calculate monthly upkeep and maintenance
  • Calculate extra costs like navigational devices & fittings
  • Draft your own checklist
  • Draft & sign off sale & purchase contracts
  • Draft & sign off a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA)
  • Ensure satisfied 100%
  • Execute payment and take transfer of ownership
  • Register and insure the motor yacht

Frequently Asked Questions About Motor Yachts

These 5 questions give you some clarity on what to consider when purchasing a motor yacht.

  • How many guests and crew (combined) are you comfortable with aboard? Privately registered motor yachts can carry no more than 12 passengers, so often this will define the length of the vessel.
  • Then consider functionality and lifestyle. Decide upfront what you want out of the motor yacht, are you planning to use it for charter, private cruising, sport, remote office, family vacations or entertainment or all of the above?
  • Do you plan to use it on inland water systems or oceans or both?
  • Do you want to captain and skipper yourself or would you prefer a crew, so you have time to enjoy the experience?  Set a limit to your budget both in terms of purchase and then beyond that one has to consider the long term upkeep, storage, and monthly maintenance costs
  • What is the best length for a Motor Yacht?

If you plan on becoming your own captain, the best hull size on average for a single-handed skipper would be between 32ft to 42ft.

The best motor yacht length is defined by both the objective and purpose of the vessel. Added to this one should consider both the budget and upkeep costs, including dockage fees, as these are most often calculated at a per foot rate. The next factor would be to select a good for the number of passengers you wish to have aboard (family, guests, crew), as the number of sleeping berths are limited on smaller hull sizes. As you increase your hull size, you need to consider that this will then add an extra headcount because you have to factor in additional space for crew.

They say the old golden unwritten nautical rule is that boat length is always defined by a person’s age. Whatever your age, double it, and that gives you a perfect hull length in feet (for example, if you are 40 years of age you should consider an 80ft hull length).

They can cost anywhere between $100,000- $10,000,000. The sky’s the absolute limit when it comes to what you can spend on a motor yacht. Used or new, the cost is often defined by the design, size and year of manufacture. Quality motor yachts are built to last and most often retain market related value if they are properly maintained and have an accident free history.

Motor yachts are generally between 33ft – 79 feet, super yachts are generally over 79 feet in hull length, and mega yachts are over 100 feet.

If you purchase a globally recognized brand, it makes selling the boat in the future much easier. The established global motor yacht brands offer a range of existing designs that can be customized to suit any individual requirement. These approved motor yacht designs are often updated with the latest technology and modifications over the years. A tip is that reputable international brands retain market value over the years so are considered a valuable investment.

There is never one best hull type for a motor yacht, there is rather a series or collection of yachts or vessels that are released and they often use the exact same hull design for different lengths in a series. There is a huge selection and variation of hull designs, and this is exactly what defines a yacht. Motor boat hulls are specifically designed to cut through water with the least possible resistance while remaining balanced in all types of weather and water conditions. Each year hull designs improve and often a new hull release is about using the latest carbon fiber molding techniques for structural strength, rather than a modification to the actual shape of the design.

Super yachts are power driven water vessels specially designed by yacht engineers and shipbuilders and are normally 71 – 99 feet in length. Super yachts that exceed 100ft in length are classified as mega yachts.

Northwest Motor Yachts from 52' to 58'

Northwest Motor Yachts are not "cookie cutter" models. Each Steve Seaton designed boat Northwest Yachts builds is tailored to the individual requirements of its' owner. The size, layout, styling, hull configuration and construction materials are carefully considered in the creation of your new boat; one built just for you.

For open ocean, coastal, near coastal and inside passage cruising, our semi-displacement, FRP constructed Trawler series are the perfect configuration. This gives the owner the option of cruising at displacement speeds for economy or, for when it is needed, cruise at speeds up to 12 knots (depending upon engine selection). Northwest Motor Yachts are built standard as a twin engine configuration optionally as a single. Northwest Motor Yachts are available with engine sizes that will allow for faster cruising speeds or to achieve top speeds of 18 to 20 knots. For the 52 and 55, Northwest offers the John Deere 6068 (330hp) engine(s) as standard. For the larger models, the John Deere 6090, (500hp) or 6135 (750hp)  engines are available.

For more information or to find out how surprisingly affordable it is to have a boat tailored just for you, please call or write us .
