Ship Radar shows you real-time ship traffic around the world on an interactive map so you can see which freighters and cargo ships are nearby, when they will arrive, and their direction of travel. 

Whether you’re an importer who needs to know when your containers will arrive or an exporter interested in making sure that your shipments get to their destination safely, Ship Radar makes it easy to track ships via satellite navigation, radar, and historical data.

How Does Ship Radar Work?

Ship Radar is an app that shows you ship traffic in real-time.

As you can see from a screenshot of the app, it’s pretty easy to use: select what type of ship you want to view (i.e., cargo ship, tanker, container ship) and then enter a name of a port.

The result will show you all ships close to your port, including information such as speed and heading. All data is taken from publicly available sources — but you probably knew that already.

Emissions From Shipping

Shipping is responsible for around one billion tons of carbon dioxide worldwide due to emissions , which corresponds to around 3 percent of all human-made CO2 emissions . Furthermore, shipping causes about 15 percent of global nitrogen oxide emissions and 13 percent of sulfur dioxide emissions, and the trend is increasing every year.

How Many Ships Sink per Year?

Total ship losses have been declining every year so far. 

In 2020, 49 ships sank worldwide . 

While in 2015, 105 ship losses were recorded.

The most common cause of a ship sinking is human error.

The Marine Traffic is a Live Radar system which allows users all around the world to track ships, freighter, cargo ships, tanker ships, human trafficker, liner, passenger ships, SAR (search and rescue helicopter), sports boats, yachts, vessels, cruiser ships and so on. All you need is a laptop, desktop PC, smartphone or tablet and a internet connection. So it is possible to track live your friends, family or relatives when they are travelling with any kind of ship. Whenever you are near a big lake, the beach, the ocean or a harbour and you see a ship pass by, you can immediately check on our website with the marine traffic map where this ship is coming from and in which harbour it will docking. The Marine Traffic also offers to search ships, vessels and so on via harbour or area. If you want to search a specific boat which is leaving the harbour or is currently anchoring, just type in the harbour you’re searching for and you will immediately get to the right location. There is also a submenu where you can select all different locations around the world. If you select one the map zooms into to this specific locations and you will see immediately all the marine traffic which is going on right now. On the left side of the map there is also an option to select the different weather options. This gives you the opportunity about the actual weather situation around the globe. So if a vessel is currently in a heavy storm you can see it immediately. You get additional information about where the storm is coming from and where it will push along. So if you are a ship owner this is very important and contributes greatly to safety in the vessel traffic. Everyone can immediately react on weather changes which will happen on their itinerary, so they can search for a different route which will get the safely to their target harbour.

How it works.

The marine traffic is suitable for everyone who is interested in seafaring. Whatever you are a captain, officer, deck- , engine- or service personal, normal worker. Everyone can easily use the marine traffic. Often when you travel with your car you have to tack a ferry boat to get from one destination to another. And it often happens that ferrys are to early and or to late, and therefore you could probably miss the ferry or have to wait for a long time. But not if you check the current status of the ferry before. You will see the exact position where the ferry is at the moment, and therefore you can plan your trip better without any surprises. Large companies use the marine traffic to track the container ships which are transporting their products. So their able to see exactly when their goods left the harbor. It's very pracitcal for a lot of companies because they always know where their stuff is. They get informed immediately if the container ship will be delayed, because for example of heavy seas, strong current or see storms. So they can immediately intervene and and plan their work accordingly.

THE AIS SYSTEM

The AIS system – Automatic Identification System – is an identification system which recognizes all types of ships in the international shipping traffic. It allows every ship owner to show its current position, speed and route and the actual position of all ships, vessels, yachts, freighters or cruiser ships near them on the radar. This is a very important security tool to prevent collisions between ships. The AIS system is able to locate ships with which a collision could be possible. It calculates the time which remains until the ships would crash and immediately it suggests an evasive maneuver. Furthermore it transmits more detailed information about other ships. There are four types of information which are transmitted. Static data – IMO number, ship name, call signal, MMSI number, ship type and size of the ship. Dynamic data – Status (under engine, sailing, lie at anchor, tightened, disabled), current position, time of current position, course over ground, speed over ground, forward direction, line change rate. Travel data – actual maximum flotation depth, dangerous goods, destination, estimated arrival time for inland AIS – ENI ship number, organization data, dangerous goods, flotation depth, loading conditions, fairway lane, max. height over water, number of crew members, number of passengers, number of staff. But not all ships are committed to transmit all this amount of data. Small ships like sport boats usually have to transmit only the most important informations. The MMSI number consists of 9 digit numbers, the first 3 digits give information about the nationality of the vessel. The last 6 numbers identify the individual vessel. MMSI stands for “Maritime Mobile Service Identity. It makes it easy to get in contact with every other ship owner to prevent collisions. But why do ships use another radar system as airplanes or other means of transportation? The marine traffic is a complete different system as the normal radar system. It’s possible to track ships also with the radar, but it’s very difficult to interpret the data and to determine the exact position and route of the ship. The AIS system is able to display all the data very detailed. And that’s important to keep all itinerary safe because the amount of ships which travel every day around the globe has increased a lot in the past years. Just watch the Marine Traffic map and zoom out, then you can see all ships which are currently traveling.

How does the radar work?

All different ships or vessels on the marine traffic map have different icons and colors. Each icon and color has a different meaning. The arrow means that the ship is currently driving. The arrow also points to the direction the ship is going. The round point means that the vessel is currently not moving or has anchored.

Where are the Ships Now?

Where do ships positions come from.

The system is based on AIS . Receiving stations cover the entire range of 40 nautical miles (about 75 km) and periodically receive information from some more remote vessels. Read more about AIS on Wikipedia .

What is the maximum coverage area?

It is difficult to determine the maximum coverage area, but it can be imagined in this example: a vessel with an AIS transmitter connected to an external antenna located at a height of 15 meters above sea level will be able to exchange a signal with the coastal AIS station at a distance of 15-20 nautical miles (approximately 28-38 km). The higher the AIS stations are, both shipboard and shore, the further the radio signal will spread.

I just sailed from Chesapeake Bay to NYC. I don't have AIS on my boat, and was concerned about boat traffic in the C&D canal, the Delware river, and Ambrose channel into the Hudson. I DO HAVE cellular service on my Ipad. We remained within 10 miles of the coastline at all times, and this app identified all the freighters, both near us, and I could also look ahead and behind us. I was then able to hail them and discuss course and direction with them. There were a few times we needed to adjust our course a tiny bit, and avoid issues well in advance. This app was a life saver for our voyage. Even when I upgrade to onboard AIS, I will still use this app to see the freighters that are outside of the VHF line of site range to predict CPA. Thanks Marine Traffic!!!!

Free unlocks expire when app closed

I was looking for an app to track my vehicle shipment. This app does a great job of that and more. There’s a catch for free accounts, however. You get three “past route” and three “vessel info” unlocks before having to register and pay. No problem, I thought. Just want to track one ship over a period of 3-5 days. So day one I unlock the past route and vessel info for my ship. Very cool info! Day two I go to check on the vessel and… I have to use another unlock for both the past route and vessel info. Now day two again, but I closed the app and it wants to use my final unlock for both the route and vessel info. It’s the same ship on the same route. If you’re going to subscribe, this won’t matter to you. If you’re like me and only have a single, one-off use of the app, go for it but don’t close the app! You’ll have to use your limited unlocks again and quickly run out. I hope the app dev will consider allowing each unlock to last for the current sailing of the selected ship instead of what seems to expire as soon as I close the app.

Was good, recent update made it useless.

This app used to be good for what I needed it for, which was seeing the names of ships near me (I work on ships and frequently need to do this for various reasons). Now, the app doesn’t show any vessel names unless you specifically search for a specific vessel, even when the “vessel names” option is checked. Furthermore, the app used to show you a picture of the vessel for free, which is very useful if you have to visit a specific ship and you don’t know what it looks like. Now when you tap on a ship, you don’t even get a picture. So this app is trying to force me to pay for things that it used to do for free, and it still is possible to do for free if I use google or other apps, so there is literally no reason to use this app anymore. On an unrelated note, the old logo was completely fine. The new logo looks nothing like a ship unless you know in advance that it’s trying to look like a ship viewed from the front. Simpler isn’t always better. It’s an app logo, not a company logo. It should quickly convey what the app is for so that it stands out on a page with 27 other app logos.
