Video shows moments before superyacht went down in storm off Sicily

Newly released video captures a luxury superyacht being battered by a violent storm before it suddenly sank off Sicily with 22 people aboard Monday.

The grainy images obtained by NBC News and other outlets were recorded on closed-circuit television not far from where the Bayesian was anchored, about a half-mile from the port of Porticello, on Sicily’s northern coast .

The yacht's 250-foot mast, illuminated with lights and lashed by the storm, appears to bend to one side before it finally disappears and is replaced by darkness.

The speed with which a yacht built to handle the roughest seas capsized stunned maritime experts.  

“I can’t remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that, you know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size,” said Stephen Richter of SAR Marine Consulting.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and five of the 22 other people who were aboard the 184-foot vessel remain unaccounted for and are believed to be trapped in the Bayesian’s hull, nearly 170 feet underwater.

Officials confirmed Monday that at least one person, the ship’s cook, had died.  

Superyachts like the Bayesian, which had been available for charters at a rate of $215,000 a week, are designed to stay afloat even as they are taking on water to give the people aboard a chance to escape, Richter said. 

“Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday,” Richter said. “They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed.”

Built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered Bayesian could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters. 

On Tuesday, Italian rescue workers resumed the search for Lynch and the five other passengers still missing: Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife.

“The fear is that the bodies got trapped inside the vessel,” Salvatore Cocina, the head of civil protection in Sicily, told Reuters .

The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was one of the 15 people rescued Monday after it capsized.

“It’s extremely rare for a boat of this size to sink,” Richter said.

What’s not rare is the kind of storm that sank it , said Simon Boxall, senior lecturer in oceanography at Britain’s University of Southampton.

“People assume the Mediterranean is this rather calm and passive place that never gets storms and always blue skies,” Boxall said. “In fact, you get some quite horrendous storms that are not uncommon at this time of year.”

The president of Italy’s meteorological society has said Monday’s violent storm may have involved a waterspout, essentially a tornado over water, or a downburst, which occurs more frequently but doesn’t involve the rotation of the air.

Luca Mercalli, president of the Italian Meteorology Society, also said recent temperatures may have been a factor. 

“The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius [86 Fahrenheit], which is almost 3 degrees more than normal,” Mercalli told Reuters. “This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms.”

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who two months ago was acquitted by a San Francisco jury of fraud charges stemming from the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion.

Prosecutors alleged that Lynch, dubbed “Britain’s Bill Gates,” and Autonomy’s vice president for finance, Stephen Chamberlain, had padded the firm’s finances ahead of the sale. Lynch’s lawyers argued that HP was so eager to acquire Autonomy that it failed to adequately check the books .

Lynch had taken Morvill, who was one of his defense attorneys, on the luxury trip. 

Chamberlain was not on the Bayesian.

In what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a car struck and killed Chamberlain on Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.

“Steve fought successfully to clear his good name at trial earlier this year, and his good name now lives on through his wonderful family,” Chamberlain’s lawyer, Gary Lincenberg, said in a statement .

The Real Costs of Owning a Superyacht [Complete Guide]

Owning a  superyacht  is a status symbol available only to the world’s wealthiest individuals and corporations. Although there is no strict definition, the Red Ensign Group Yacht Code is applicable to “motor or sailing vessels of 24 meters in load line length and over…and which, at the time, is in commercial use for sport or pleasure and carries no cargo and no more than 12 passengers 1 .” There are currently just over 10,000 superyachts in the world with around 200-250 new builds delivered each year. The vast majority are  motor yachts , with sailing yachts counting for less than 20% of the total. The world’s largest private vessel, Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s 180m (590-foot) AZZAM,  cost $600 million to build when it was delivered in 2013. Eight of the ten most expensive luxury acquisitions of all time were superyachts.

Purchase Cost

Buying a new or used superyacht will most likely cost the buyer several million dollars. Pricing varies widely based on the yacht size, age, and other factors such as builder, guest capacity, speed, range, and more. The market is worldwide and extensive. Any potential buyer would be well-advised to engage a professional, certified broker to guide them in the selection of their dream yacht and through the myriad of complications in making the purchase.

Operating Costs

In years past, owners and their brokers would work on 10% of the purchase price as an estimate of annual operating costs, but the vast range of yacht size, operating location, and usage profile makes this approach less useful without giving the question more thought. Building a budget for a yacht requires consideration of the following elements:

Crew – Salary, payroll taxes, recruitment fees, uniform, health insurance, food, and travel for vacation and repatriation are all crew-related costs. A good guide for salary costs is published by Dockwalk magazine every year based on an extensive survey of the crew and placement agents. Using their most recent article as a guide, a crew of eight full-time crew on a 150-foot yacht will cost over $650,000 per year in salary alone. Get a complete crew cost breakdown.

Dockage – Unless the owner plans to spend the year at anchor, then keeping the yacht in a marina incurs a significant cost. Dockage is normally sold per foot of the yacht’s full length and per night, although contract rates for longer periods may be available. High-quality marinas in peak seasons are currently running in the $6-8 per foot per night range. Electricity, fresh water, and waste removal are all additional costs to be considered.

Fuel – The captain or engineer should be able to provide the fuel consumption per hour at any given speed, so if a yacht owner knows roughly how much he wants the boat to travel, then he can estimate the total fuel consumption and budget the fuel cost. There is also the fuel cost for generators, particularly at anchor. A typical 150-foot motor yacht cruising at 12 knots will consume in the region of 150 U.S. gallons per hour. At today’s fuel prices, that’s going to be close to $500 per hour. 500 hours per year will give us the main engine fuel budget of around $250,000. To this, we must also add the generators’ fuel consumption at anchor plus any additional cost for tenders.

Communications – Everyone onboard, crew and guests, want to remain connected to their social media, streaming services, and email. The technology available in this area moves fast and with 5G coming online, near-shore costs will likely come down. For those who want broadband speed while offshore, costs are high and depend on the upload/download speeds required. Start with an estimate of $4-5,000 per month and work from there. Additional communications costs include satellite TV subscriptions, crew cell phone costs, mail, freight, and more. Get a complete communication cost breakdown.

Maintenance, Consumables, and Other Operating Costs – Having considered crew payroll, marina costs, fuel, and internet, the budget will start to materialize. One must take all other costs into account, such as hull insurance, liability insurance, maintenance and consumables, warehousing, safety and survey costs, upkeep of the navigation outfit, computing support, car rental, and more.

Chartering a luxury yacht is the ultimate way to experience a truly personalized vacation. While the destination is of utmost importance, the yacht you choose is equally significant. With so many yacht styles, sizes and amenities, it can be hard to keep things straight. Especially for first-time yachters. Motor Yachts

The highly capable motor yacht can take you on Arctic expeditions, luxurious trips along the Italian Riviera , or snorkeling in the Bahamas. No matter the conditions outside, motor yachts deliver comfort, style, and plenty of room to unwind. Motor yachts are a luxury resort at sea, with many featuring gyms, pools, theaters, and more. Some even have helipads for effortlessly accessing even the most remote locations. 

Large families or group vacations among friends can be easily accommodated on super-yachts (78ft+/24m) and megayachts (200ft+/60m). Numerous staterooms and flexible sleeping configurations allow for private spaces and many group gathering areas. Smaller yachts from 40ft+/12m are also great options for smaller groups or couples celebrating their honeymoon.

If you’re into water toys, many motor yachts carry numerous tenders from jet skis, to kiteboards, paddleboards, inflatables, and scuba equipment. With the flexibility that comes with a motor yacht, some guests can choose to go fishing, while others can take the tender to shore for some beach time. 

Speed is also a great attribute of motor yachts. You can experience more destinations in a shorter time with the power of 40+ knots, and no reliance on the wind. Motor Catamarans

Flexible, comfortable, and perfect for cruising shallow waters.  That’s one way to describe the increasingly popular motor catamaran category.  These yachts combine the agility of a smaller boat, with many of the conveniences of a large motor yacht. The dual hulls also allow for a more stable ride while underway. Lack of sails provides a lower clearance for added flexibility in lower passages. 

Smaller than most megayachts, catamarans can still typically accommodate groups of up to 12 and offer two or three levels of area for relaxing and dining. Many modern yachts even feature forward cockpit areas for secluded outdoor space in the front of the boat. Couples can easily share these boats without problems. While families can have their space spreading out on the flybridge as well as the main deck. 

Motor Catamarans can also cruise at a quick clip, reaching 22-25 knots, depending on the boat and conditions. This allows for easy navigation of groups of islands like the USVI , Bahamas, Greece, and more. You can also get much closer to land in these gorgeous lagoon areas and tiny ports. 

Water sports enthusiasts will appreciate the easy access to the water that catamarans boast. Drop anchor and swim, snorkel, or go kayaking within minutes. Most catamarans also carry dinghies or tenders to explore or tow inflatables.

Onboard, the galley and salon are prioritized with wide and easily traversed configurations perfect for gourmet dinners. Front deck areas often feature trampolines for relaxing and breezy sunbathing.  What completes the package is the low fuel consumption that comes with the small engines and lighter-weight frames. Catamarans provide the option to enjoy a private yacht charter more economically.

Sailing Yachts

Like the aforementioned power catamarans, the sailing catamaran yachts offer a very comfortable experience, suited for many top yachting locations around the world. They traverse these gorgeous waters, however, at a slower pace, reaching 9-10 knots per hour, depending on conditions and the boat’s engine. This is an important factor to consider when choosing between a motor yacht vs. sailing yacht.

Those in search of true relaxation will appreciate the quiet sailing of these luxury sailing catamarans, a major difference from luxury motor yachts. In addition, sailing enthusiasts can learn techniques and lend a helping hand to the crew if so desired. 

Nearly all of the great designs of a power catamaran also exist aboard sail yachts. Flybridges and front cockpits allow for more distinct lounging and sightseeing vistas. As with power catamarans, the water is easily accessed, giving way to hours of water sports enjoyment. 

Gliding through the water with two hulls, these sailing catamarans navigate the seas more flatly than traditional mono-hull sailboats, also adding comfort and stability. Also important, sailing catamarans can travel long distances without the need for refueling. Not to mention the lower fuel costs and the smaller environmental footprint this amounts to. A factor to note when choosing between a motor yacht vs. sailing yacht.

A sailboat yacht charter offers guests a truly unique and exciting experience. Most notably, you have the great opportunity to learn sailing terminology, equipment, and maneuvers. You’ll be able to participate in the journey while gaining expert knowledge from the seasoned crew. 

In addition, you’ll love the quiet experience and thrill of being propelled by the wind, just as explorers have been doing for millennia. Activities like fishing, swimming, snorkeling are easily reached from the boat.

Larger toys like jet skis or motorized equipment are however not as readily available. The shape of sailing yachts does limit some storage, typically found on powerboats. However, the captain and crew will do their best to accommodate all guests’ preferences and desires.

Traditional sailboat yachts can reach lengths of 220 ft, enabling large groups to charter in total comfort. The large decks, some with flybridges flow elegantly into interior salons. The staterooms also offer great space and amenities for entertainment and dining. 

Utilizing the wind for as much travel as possible, sail yachts can travel further distances without the need for stopping to refuel. In some cases, sailboats are the only way to reach very remote islands and blue water attractions. This of course also means very low fuel consumption in comparison to power yachts.

Italian Authorities Open Manslaughter Investigation in Yacht Disaster

A prosecutor involved in the inquiry into the sinking said it was “plausible” that crimes were committed during the accident.

Italian authorities said on Saturday that they had opened a manslaughter investigation into the sinking of the Bayesian luxury yacht, but that they had not yet zeroed in on any potential suspects.

The sleek, $40 million sailing boat went down fast in a storm off Sicily’s coast on Monday morning, killing Michael Lynch, a British tech billionaire; his teenage daughter, Hannah; four of his friends; and one member of the crew. The captain escaped on a lifeboat with 14 others.

On Saturday, Ambrogio Cartosio, the prosecutor in charge of the case, said at a news conference that it was “plausible” crimes were committed during the accident.

“There could be responsibilities of the captain only,” he said. “There could be responsibilities of the whole crew. There could be responsibilities of the boat makers. Or there could be responsibilities of those who were in charge of surveilling the boat.”

It will be difficult to determine the cause of the sinking until the yacht is brought to the surface and inspected, which could take weeks.

Five bodies were found in the same cabin.

The yacht sank at an angle, with the stern — where the heavy engine is situated — having gone down first.

The captain and the crew, who have been holed up in a Sicilian hotel with other survivors, are allowed to leave Italy. But prosecutors said that they still want to ask them more questions.

The authorities did not perform alcohol or drug tests on the captain or the crew.

The authorities would not comment on whether hatches on the deck had been left open, which would have allowed water to pour in during the yacht’s sinking.

In addition to possible manslaughter charges, the authorities are also investigating the possibility of a negligently caused shipwreck, a crime that carries up to several years in prison upon conviction.

Investigators said they were focusing on why the 184-foot-long Bayesian, which was built in 2008, went down so quickly, especially when other yachts nearby weathered the storm.

Executives at the company that built the boat have said there is nothing faulty with the design of the yacht and have tried to shift the blame to the crew.

At the news conference on Saturday, the authorities were asked why the captain, James Cutfield, an experienced sailor, left the sinking boat while some passengers were still on board.

“The investigations are also focusing on this,” said Raffaele Cammarano, another prosecutor. But he added that the witnesses they had spoken to said that “the event was really, really sudden.”

Some people who were along the Sicilian coast at the time of the sinking described seeing waterspouts, which are vicious funnels of water and wind that sweep across a body of water during thunderstorms. But on Saturday, Italian authorities said they believed it was more likely that a downburst occurred at the time of the accident.

A downburst is a blast of powerful wind that comes surging down from the sky during thunderstorms. The Italian authorities said that extreme weather was “one of the main elements” of their investigation, but added that they were still at the early stages of their inquiry and that they did not want to “play the probability game.”

The rescuers found the bodies of five passengers in one cabin, which was on the left side of yacht. The yacht was found lying on its right side at the bottom of a bay, in about 160 feet of water. The authorities said the passengers who died were most likely trying to flee to the higher side of the boat and were probably sleeping when the accident happened.

The authorities said that they were not certain whether a black box existed and that the hull was still being searched.

Mr. Cartosio would not comment directly on the actions of the crew, but said that it would be “even more painful” if “the sinking was caused by behaviors that were not perfectly in order with the responsibilities that each person must have in the management of navigation.”

But he added that “this is just, in fact, the beginning of an inquiry.”
