The Maxi 72 is the biggest boat where you feel you’re doing things properly, writes Mike Sanderson.

These boats don’t have a canting keel or daggerboards but they are incredibly fast, beautiful to sail – right in the sweet spot – and potent under IRC because they are so refined.

I sail on [Hap Fauth’s] Bella Mente and sometimes I get to helm the boat. It’s an incredible privilege to sail one.

You have 20 people on board and the ability to get guys grinding. It’s slick and efficient and highly developed.

The Volvo boats, by comparison, make it frustratingly hard to do a good job. They are hard to showcase and make it look easy because they are so short-staffed.

It’s the opposite in a Maxi 72; you have enough people to do anything you want.

Mike Sanderson

New Zealander Mike Sanderson, 47, first raced round the world in the 1993/4 Whitbread in New Zealand Endeavour.

He won the Volvo Ocean Race as skipper of ABN AMRO 1 in 2006, and directed Team Origin, the British challenger for the America’s Cup from 2007-2010.

A professional sailmaker, he now heads Doyle International.

26.96m/88.5ft motor yacht NOTORIOUS was built by Leopard in 1997 and last refitted in 2022. Her interiors sport dark and rich wooden panelling complemented by cream furnishings and plenty of windows to let in the natural light while also maintaining guest privacy. The overnight accommodation sleeps six guests in three en-suite cabins, with an experienced crew of 3 to keep everything running efficiently.

The main deck aft has a large area for sunbathing and alfresco dining and lounging while enjoying sweeping views of the surroundings. Stairs connect to the lower deck swim platform for easy access to the tender and water toys.

Side walkways lead around to the foredeck, where there is a broad sunbed for guests to sunbathe and take in uninterrupted views of the anchorage.

The lower deck layout contains the guest and crew accommodation along with the main salon amidships. The main salon has a port-side C-shaped sofa with a day bed section for guests to recline and watch a film on the widescreen TV mounted to the forward wall. NOTORIOUS Specifications

A stairway forward of the main salon connects to the main deck above, where the helm controls are forward and behind a galley with wet bar facilities and a concealed TV that pops up from the counter. The aft indoor/outdoor area has a symmetrical setting of a C-shaped sofa on both sides of the room. The port side has a large table for indoor/outdoor dining, and the starboard side comes with two drinks tables. The sunroof opens for guests to enjoy a greater connection to the natural environment.

Twin 16V 2000 M91 engines producing 2,000 HP grant a top speed of 34 knots and a cruising speed of 28 knots.

Yacht Charter Accommodation

The accommodation sleeps a total of 6 guests in 3 en-suite cabins: 1 Master suite, 1 VIP stateroom and 1 twin cabin with 2 Pullman berths. ~ The Master suite is on the lower deck and has a double bed, widescreen TV, wardrobe and an en-suite bathroom with a sink, toilet and shower. ~ The VIP stateroom in the bow has a double bed, widescreen TV, wardrobe and an en-suite bathroom with a sink, toilet and shower. ~ The twin cabin has two single beds and two Pullman berths, a widescreen TV, storage and an en-suite bathroom with a sink, toilet and shower. ~ The professional crew of 3 will ensure that all guests receive first-class service throughout their stay.

In 2017, Sanlorenzo launched Notorious. This is a luxury motor yacht that the Italian shipyard built on its SL106 model. It’s a large scale vessel that can hold up to 10 guests. Dimensions & Performance

Notorious is quick and nimble on the water but you’ll stay secure and comfortable onboard. That’s because her planing hull and superstructure are made from a sturdy material called glass reinforced plastic. This helps her glide effortlessly through the water as you cruise around the Bahamas, Florida coast and other Caribbean hotspots. 

While she can reach an impressive speed of 28 knots, her twin engines perform best at 12 knots. Her stern and bow thrusters keep her steady and powerful. 

When you book Notorious for a charter, expect to be surrounded by elegance. This gorgeous luxury yacht was designed by Italy’s Francesco Paszkowski Design, so you know it’s going to be beautiful. The firm put its stamp on the exterior and interior of the boat, using fine materials to create timeless spaces. 

There are five cabins in all. This includes a master suite, VIP suite, double suite and two twin suites. The accommodations are plush and comfortable. The sleep arrangements include one king, one queen, one double and four single beds. In addition to your party, there’s also room for five crew members to stay onboard. There’s also a hydraulic swim platform that makes it easy to transition into the water when you’re ready for a swim.

Ohio brothers sentenced to 'notorious' prison following yacht party in Dubai

DUBAI, U.A.E. (WKRC) - Two Ohio brothers were sentenced to serve time in a Dubai jail following their arrest after a yacht party.

According to Detained in Dubai , an organization that provides assistance to those dealing with legal issues in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Ohio brothers Joseph and Joshua Lopez were sentenced to a month in jail time for drinking alcohol on a yacht.

The outlet said the brothers are "facing time in some of the world's most notorious prisons."

According to the organization, Joseph Lopez is a 24-year-old Air Force veteran and social media influencer, who currently holds the title of "Mr. Louisiana." Joseph Lopez intended to visit Dubai for two weeks before preparing to train for the Mister USA competition, per the outlet.

The New York Post reported that the influencer had hoped to shoot new content for social media in the Middle East's "City of Gold." The 24-year-old has amassed around 300K followers on Instagram and TikTok.

The brothers visited Bla Bla Dubai, a nightclub located near the Dubai Marina, on June 2. At some point during the night, the Lopez brothers were invited to a hotel "after party" by an Uber driver, per the organization, which reported that the brothers were given "platters of food, sparklers and drinks that were not requested" in a VIP section.

Twenty minutes later, the lights of the establishment came on and the brothers were handed a bill. Despite feeling taken advantage of, Joseph Lopez told the organization that he paid the bill in full.

Detained in Dubai reported that the brothers were later approached by a man at the party, who invited them back to his Yacht. Despite Joseph Lopez telling the man that he was "done spending for the night," the man insisted they join him, telling the brothers they would be his "American guests."

Upon arriving on the yacht, staff gave the brothers a drink and attempted to charge them $2,722. According to the outlet, the brothers refused before they began to feel strange, with the rest of the night becoming a blur. Joseph Lopez told the outlet that he and his brother were possibly "drugged," per the organization.

“They were drugged by locals after being asked to a yacht party by a local resident,” Detained in Dubai CEO Radha Stirling wrote.

Later in the night, the brothers were confronted by men in black ski masks, who allegedly attempted to put them in a vehicle, per the organization. Feeling they were being abducted, they resisted, the organization reported.

The Lopez brothers were arrested and held at a police station from June 3 to June 12, per the organization, which said they were given bail and a travel ban.

According to the organization, the prosecutor considered charging the brothers with alcohol consumption, resisting resisting arrested and property damage to a patrol vehicle.

Detained in Dubai reported that the Lopez brothers appeared in court last week, facing a charge of drinking alcohol. They were sentenced to one month in prison, per the organization, which added that the brothers will still face a charge related to "damaging government property and assaulting an officer."

The organization said it is pushing for a diplomatic intervention from the United States, with the Lopez brothers asking for an intervention from their local representatives in Ohio: Ohio Representative Mike Carey, Senator Sherrod Brown and Senator J.D. Vance.

“The legal process in Dubai can be drawn out for months and often the punishment is the process,” Detained in Dubai wrote. "Without diplomatic intervention, these boys face potentially years in jails notorious for human rights abuse and torture."

Their next court appearance is scheduled for tomorrow, per the organization.
