Boat Review: Spencer 43 Express

  • By Dean Travis Clarke

One thing in particular impressed me greatly when I visited Spencer’s yard in Wanchese, North Carolina: In a time when most every other boatbuilder has cut staff and is praying to make it through the recession, Spencer has a dozen boats in process and the yard is crawling with workers. In every bay, I saw a boat under construction. That speaks volumes about the quality and popularity of this builder. I attribute this to several things: Spencer builds top-quality boats as plain or as fancy as you want, but all are undeniably seaworthy and beautiful. And Paul Spencer isn’t afraid to take some chances in his quest for improvement.

The Spencer 43 holds the notoriety of being the first dedicated custom fishing boat to install Volvo Penta’s IPS (Innovative Propulsion System) drives: the pods that hang straight down from the hull with dual, counter-rotating propellers facing forward. Yes, you could call boaters and fishermen “change averse,” and yes, I expect acceptance of this revolutionary (and odd-looking) running gear to come slowly. But it is the proverbial “better mousetrap,” and once you run a boat with pods, you won’t rest until you get one.

Admittedly, the majority of boats equipped with Volvo Penta’s IPS are cruisers. These boats benefit from IPS because in addition to the dramatic improvement in all aspects of performance and handling this system offers up, it also accounts for a measurable increase in usable space belowdecks. In fact, most boats can actually add an entire double cabin when using IPS drives.

Performance Volvo calls its 435 hp diesels IPS 600s – only they know why. The engines mount beneath the cockpit sole and attach directly to the pods protruding through the hull bottom. Computer software controls each pod independently for optimum maneuverability. In addition to the standard single-lever shifters, IPS provides a joystick for close-quarters maneuvering. With the joystick, you can move the boat in any direction you wish – sideways, diagonally, pivoting, forward and backward – all with the nudge of the stick. Single-lever controls connect to the electronic shifting and throttle mechanisms to control the engines.

These engines perform superbly with or without the IPS system. Equipped with both a supercharger and turbocharger, the IPS 600s react to throttles more like big-block gas V-8s than diesels. The supercharger kicks in at low rpm for instant response and torque – you don’t have to wait for the turbocharger to build boost pressure. Once the turbo hits its peak, the supercharger drops out for high-end response.

Trolling at 3.9 knots burned less than 1 gph and resulted in a very clean wake with virtually no engine noise or exhaust – again thanks to the IPS. (Exhaust comes out the pod below the waterline.)

At cruising speed the 43 reverses course in less than three boat lengths, but Volvo’s speed-sensitive turning requires you to pull back on the throttles a tad if you want a tighter turning radius. IPS software dictates that turns at higher speeds scribe wider arcs – all part of the safety features built into the system.

Winds blowing out of the southeast at 18 to 20 knots and two-foot seas in the bay made for a real washboard ride. By adding a touch of trim tab to drop the nose, I got the Spencer 43 to slice through the slop with impunity.

After setting the 43 beam-to the weather, I easily walked it directly up-sea/upwind sideways using the joystick steering. Honestly, there’s nothing you can’t make this boat do with that joystick.

And then there’s “Sport Fish Mode!” Certainly more onboard room counts as a positive on any boat, but the true benefit to a fishing boat shows clearly when actually fighting a fish. Push the appropriate button on the control binnacle and the steering wheel locks while the pods tilt outboard. Then, just start maneuvering with your shifts and throttles. And don’t worry about slamming them from forward to reverse suddenly, either. The system won’t let you damage the gears. I honestly don’t believe there’s a fish in the sea that can outmaneuver Sport Fish Mode; however, I’d be willing to bet that few anglers will be able to reel fast enough to take up the slack when this boat churns and burns!

Other interesting performance aspects that set the Spencer apart include the ability to steer a straight line with one engine as easily as with two.

Layout Most expresses feature centerline stairs from the cockpit to the bridge deck – which are just fine if nobody’s in the way when you need to reach the rail in a hurry. Spencer puts modules across the middle of the boat and stairs up both sides, so you’ll always have at least one clear avenue. You can access the engine compartment through day hatches in each stairway or by raising the entire bridge deck on worm gears. Either way, you can access all routine maintenance points with ease.

Spencer uses all LED lighting, with many that are multicolored and change hue at the touch of the on/off switch. Another interesting touch finds that every wire in the console (and elsewhere) has a barcode tag for quick and easy identification.

spencer yachts express

Spencer cold-molds its 43-foot hulls, building the stringers of composite foam and the hardtops out of carbon fiber. As you climb to the tower, the construction ingredients get lighter (without sacrificing strength) for an optimum center of gravity.

I won’t go into all the spaces Spencer dedicates to storage. Suffice it to say that Paul Spencer feels any dead space at all just isn’t prudent.

A semicircular stairway leads belowdecks, and while it’s attractive, it might be difficult to negotiate with offshore fishing rods should you choose to store them below.

I always look for (and rarely find) emergency exits on boats. Sure, many boats offer overhead hatches in the fo’c’sle but usually none anywhere else – especially not in the increasingly common midship cabins. The Spencer 43 puts an escape hatch behind the headboard in the starboard-side, mid-cabin berth. It allows you to escape the cabin rapidly should the need ever arise and provides an ideal route for passing rods belowdecks without scratching the exotic Anagray wood found throughout the salon. Anagray offers the light tones of ash but with a far more interesting grain pattern. Considered an exotic African wood, Anagray costs less than other, more endangered species such as mahogany and teak.

Notable interior features include the obligatory island double berth forward on centerline with steps up on both sides and – thanks to IPS – a midship guest cabin with a pair of full-size twin berths. Personally, I found this cabin even more comfortable than the master in the bow when under way – I’d always rather nap farther aft than in the bow.

This boat boasts one other unusual feature in the cockpit. Rather than having dedicated space for livewells or tuna tubes, Spencer installs plug-in capability for portable models of both equipment systems. If you don’t need them for all your fishing applications, take them out and don’t waste the space.

The gunwales stretch to “big-boat height” off the water’s surface, so you won’t find it as easy to revive a fish as you would on a smaller boat. However, from a fishing standpoint, the covering board met my leg just above the knee for optimum comfort and security without infringing on rod work. In addition, Spencer makes certain that you have enough room for your toes under the gunwales so that you’ll never feel like you’re being tipped over the side while fighting a fish.

I truly appreciate the elegance of this boat’s simplicity. Spencer proves time and again that he’s capable of meeting any boat owner’s demands, from totally over-the-top to exceedingly simple. However, in my humble opinion, doing simple work as well as Spencer does takes a much greater talent and skill.

Spencer 37 Express First Glance

  • By Sport Fishing Staff
  • Updated: November 6, 2009

1109br_spencer

1109br_spencer

This 37 Express represents the first outboard boat Spencer has built. But you’ll find the same helm console on this boat that Spencer puts on its 65-footer. You’ll also be surprised at the size and layout of the cockpit – the likes of which you’d also expect on a larger vessel.

Rather than just steps or modules, the Spencer 37 actually sports mezzanine seating. However, hiding beneath that is a huge tackle room, something you definitely won’t see on other 37-foot expresses. You also have equally generous access to all systems.

“I first thought I’d make both an inboard and an outboard version,” says company owner Paul Spencer. “But I don’t really want to make it an inboard now. I like it much better this way. You’d lose all that [room and performance ability].”

With twin Yamaha 350 hp outboards and freezer and refrigerator modules across the front of the console, the 37 offers tons of room below for berths that accommodate three people, a full stand-up head with shower, a decent galley and comfortable seating.

Construction consists of epoxy laminate and foam-coring coated with premium hull paints (Alexseal, Awlgrip and Imron).

Spencer says the 37 tops out at almost 49 mph, turning 6,000 rpm and burning 66.6 gph. Cruise at 40 mph and 4,800 rpm using 36.6 gph.

Spencer claims that his niche is making great-looking boats that perform well. His company has delivered 77 Carolina hulls incorporating some of the most advanced boatbuilding technology since 1996.

For Sale: Spencer 49 Express Sportfish

  • By Jake Lamb

Spencer 49 Express Sportfish

“Paul Spencer qualifies as about the most progressive custom boatbuilder in America. He pushes the limits even amidst naysayers. And so it has been with his several boats powered by Volvo Penta’s Inboard Propulsion System (IPS). Skeptics abound, but so far everyone who actually drives one develops the passion of a convert. It certainly doesn’t hurt that Spencer’s boats are all fast, beautiful and successful fishing machines no matter how they’re powered — which is why Volvo commissioned Paul Spencer to build its new corporate flagship to showcase the abilities and efficiencies of IPS power,” Yachting previously reported .

Spencer Yachts built eight boats with IPS power packages and Gilman Yachts currently has one of them, a 49-foot Express Sportfish named Pisces , listed for sale with a $1.65 million asking price.

Spencer 49 Express Sportfish

For anglers in the market for a tournament-ready sport-fisherman, Pisces has a reported 34-knot top hop and a 30-knot cruise thanks to twin 700 hp Volvo Penta IPS2 D11 diesels. The dance-floor-size, teak cockpit is equipped with a full-size Pompanette teak fighting chair with a six-rod rocket launcher, rod and tackle stowage, a grill station, two 60-inch in-deck fish boxes and a Pipewelders tuna tower with double-spreader outriggers. It’s worth noting there’s also plumbing in place to support two on-deck livewells, however, none are included in the sale. A mezzanine allows the crew to keep an eye on trolled baits.

The bridge deck has a new C-Worthy enclosure and upholstery on the forward seating, which includes inboard-facing bench seats flanking the forward-facing bench seat on the front of the helm station. Three ladder-back helm chairs sit at the centerline teak helm pod.

Spencer 49 Express Sportfish

Belowdecks, there is a teak-and-holly sole with a galley immediately to port with a Sub-Zero refrigerator drawer, a microwave oven, a Princess two-burner cooktop, a Breville stainless-steel oven and a stainless-steel sink. There’s an L-shaped Corian countertop, high-gloss teak finishes as well as booth seating forward. A 50-inch, flat-screen TV is mounted to starboard adjacent to the galley and dining area.

The two-stateroom, two-head layout includes a forepeak master stateroom, which has a centerline queen berth with built-in teak nightstands and an en suite head. On this 49 Express Sportfish, the guest stateroom is amidships, abaft the galley and down a few steps. It has twin berths.

Notable navigational features on board Pisces include:

  • Two Furuno 15-inch multifunction color displays with NavNet 3D control panel, GPS/Chartplotter, and black box system
  • Garmin 15-inch color touchscreen 5215 GPS/Chartplotter with XM weather module
  • Furuno open-array radar array
  • Furuno black box recording depth sounder
  • Furuno RD-30 digital data display

Spencer 43 Express

  • By Jon Meade
  • Updated: August 16, 2007

Imagine a miracle fishboat chasing a marlin: Reverse steering would require simple turns of the wheel, the press of a button would swing the transom around as if it were on a hinge, and a joystick would make maneuvering a one-finger exercise. Imagine stationary spins and sideways movement. Imagine it’s real, because now it’s aboard the 43 Express by Spencer Custom Yachts, powered with a pair of 435-bhp Volvo 600 IPS Drives.

The handling advantages of IPS tractor drives shine bright in this boat, partially because of its construction. To keep the 43 Express light, Spencer stepped away from the cold-mold process and built the hull out of Corecell formed on a jig and then coated with several layers of fiberglass. The shape is reminiscent of traditional Carolina builds, with the sharp aggressive entry forward tapering back through a smooth transition to a low-degree deadrise astern. The results? The 43 Express plowed through a 3′ swell with a simple rise and fall. Speeding up into the oncoming head sea made no difference. Breaking 40 mph at full throttle, this boat will get you to the deep well before lines in, and with the money you’ll save by pulling back to 3000 rpm, burning only 31.8 gph and running 34.2 mph, you’ll have cash left over to enter all the calcuttas.

The boat’s aggressive forefoot does impact the interior, however. The forward master stateroom has a full-size berth, but due to that sharp bow entry the berth is elevated to chest level. There’s an abundance of drawers and twin cedar-lined hanging lockers. The placement of the engines under the stern decking leaves space for a roomy second berth under the elevated helm.

While standing at the helm, I had an easy reach to all the electronics under the hydraulic lift-assisted glass panel, as well as an unhindered view 360 degrees around the boat-even while throttling onto plane. Curved bench seating forward provides for the guests and keeps your crew mere steps from the 102-square-foot cockpit. Even with a large fighting chair mounted in the center, there’s room for a tournament crew to muscle a winning blue into this pit. With a tower above, luscious teak covering boards and decks, and a pearl-white finish, the boat also looks as good as it handles. Imagine that.

Learn More About Spencer And Find Your Next Boat

Founded in 1996 by Paul Spencer, on a rich heritage of Carolina boatbuilding including his father-in-law, charter captain and boatbuilder Sheldon Midgett, who had encouraged Paul to build sportfishing boats after 20 years as a successful charter captain. Paul Spencer, who grew up in the sportfishing hub of Oregon Inlet near the Outer Banks of North Carolina, began working as a deck mate while in his teens and obtained his captain’s license at age 19. His love for fishing and the sea, along with years of charter and tournament fishing, served to inform his design and construction of the elegantly functional custom Spencer sport fishing yachts, ranging from 37 ft to 87 ft in length—lean, fast, with a great ride. Though each boat is a custom handcrafted build, the distinct Spencer signature, a blend of Carolina flare and the sleek Florida style is uniquely recognizable and a source of Spencer Yachts and owners’ pride. Paul Spencer is joined in the business by 3 of his five children; Cliff Spencer is construction foreman of the entire company and enjoys tournament fishing as captain, mate or angler. Daniel Spencer, who also has a passion for fishing and obtained his captain’s license at age 21 has already won numerous tournaments; he represents Spencer Yachts in fishing tournaments and as spokesman, and customer liaison.

List Of Spencer Yachts On The Brokerage Market

Spencer Yachts hulls are handcrafted using the cold-molded method, using modern composites in the Manns Harbor, NC facility that was built in 1996, and then transported to the Wanchese, NC facility that includes an in-house paint shop, metal machine shop (marine welding, fuel tanks, specialty shafts), and a carpenter’s shop for completion of each custom vessel. Spencer Yachts strives to utilize new ideas and exceed previous innovations for continuous improvement to deliver unsurpassed world class fishing yachts.

These progressively innovative, masterfully crafted, tournament-winning sports fishing yachts are what Spencer Yachts is renowned for.

The ever-increasing demand for speed and performance has led to use of lighter, stronger composite materials such as Divinycell and carbon fiber, and the Volvo IPS power system with joystick controls. There are several significant advantages to the Volvo IPS system first utilized in a 43 ft Spencer in 2004. Greater speed, maneuverability, and efficiency; performance is enhanced as the longitudinal center of gravity is moved back, and engine room size is reduced, allowing more living and storage space, and the smaller props create a smaller wake closer to the boat’s centerline.

Another nice feature is the switch-operated low-speed bypass to send exhaust above waterline (no bubbles below) or underwater to eliminate exhaust fumes on pleasure cruises. Spencer still builds most yachts with conventional power plants, according to a customer’s preferences and usage plans. Spencer Yachts departs from most custom yachts and production brands with a narrower flybridge in keeping with its signature sleek lines; Spencer Yachts are built with fishing in mind and must perform, spin, turn, and handle well, besides its stunning beauty and luxurious comfort for overnight or long-distance offshore destinations.

In addition to the ultimate in fishing equipment and navigation electronics, the interiors are beautifully elegant with hand-selected wood veneers, natural stones, and other high-end materials, along with the accommodations, appliances, entertainment electronics—customized to the owner’s wishes and style. Comfortable for long distance fishing trips or a family offshore fishing vacation.

Jet propulsion is another advanced technology being utilized for sport fishing vessels, with its benefits of shallow draft, increased speed, greater maneuverability, and “clean” trolling water. Combined with new composites, laminates, and post-curing methods to reduce hull weight and increase performance, Spencer Yachts has managed to hit the 50-knot mark with small 6-cylinder engines and jet-propulsion! Another advance in Spencer’s ever-developing quest to deliver the ultimate sport fishing experience for their customers. And with over 100 handcrafted yachts in marinas and marlin destinations all over the world, Spencer Yachts, has become a legend in its own right.

For those serious fishermen who want to get on a Spencer Yacht now, some brokerage yachts are currently available, ranging in price from just over $1,000,000 for a 2012 Spencer 45 Express Sportfish to about $7,500,000 for a 2014 Spencer Custom Carolina 87ft Sportfish. Model years range from a 2009 Spencer 59ft Sportfish listed at about $3,500,000 to a 2021 Spencer Custom Carolina 48ft Sportfish Express listed at $2,600,000.

Famous Sportfishing Boat Owned By Jimmy Buffett Listed For Sale

jimmy buffet sportfishing boat last mango for sale

Once known as " LAST MANGO II " and owned by Jimmy Buffett, this classic 42-foot Rybovich Spencer is now listed for sale in Montauk , New York with SI Yachts broker Steve Messenger. No longer donning the name bestowed upon it by the famous Margaritaville singer, this sportfishing yacht built in 2003 has been called " BLUE EYES II " since the current owner purchased it from Buffett.

"The owner of the boat was personal friends with Jimmy and bought it from him directly," said Steve . "It was custom built for Jimmy Buffett by Rybovich Spencer and when it was completed, he had the shipyard completely destroy the mold, so it could never again be copied."

Buffett made countless trips throughout the Florida Keys, Bahamas, and up to the Hudson Canyon fishing with friends, putting nearly 5,000 hours on the twin 670-hp Cummins QSM11 diesel inboards. The engines have since been re-manufactured and the top end speed is now 35 knots, with a cruise speed of 24 knots. The asking price is listed at $999,000.

"This is the ultimate opportunity for Jimmy Buffett fans to own something that was a big part of him and his life," continued Steve. "Everyone knows about his love for the ocean, boating, fishing, and the whole lifestyle through his music. I can't imagine how awesome the feeling would be to crank up 'Volcano', with a cold drink in my hand, slow trolling in the Bahamas!"

Luxury yacht sinks off Sicily: what questions must investigators answer?

One week after a luxury yacht sank off the coast of italy, the investigators seeking answers about the shipwreck face questions about extreme weather and possible human error or problems with the yacht itself..

More than 180 feet long, with a mast towering about 240 feet and a keel that could be lowered for greater stability, the Bayesian luxury yacht did not, in the eyes of its maker, have the vulnerabilities of a ship that would easily sink.

“It drives me insane,” Giovanni Costantino, CEO of the Italian Sea Group, which in 2022 bought the company that made the ship, said after its wreck last week . “Following all the proper procedures, that boat is unsinkable.”

short article insert

Lynch had invited family, friends and part of his legal team on a cruise in the Mediterranean to celebrate his acquittal in June of fraud charges tied to the sale of his company to tech giant Hewlett-Packard.

Festive offer

Italian authorities have opened a manslaughter investigation, searching for answers from the survivors, the manufacturer and the wreck itself. They face a range of questions and possible factors.

An ‘earthquake’ in the sky?

When the Bayesian sank around 4 a.m. Monday, the waters in its area, about half a mile off the Sicilian port of Porticello, were transformed by an extremely sudden and violent storm, according to fishermen, a captain in the area and meteorologists.

But what kind of storm is still a mystery, compounded by the fact that a sailing schooner anchored nearby did not have its own disaster. Also unclear is whether the crew was aware that Italian authorities had issued general warnings about bad weather the night before.

Karsten Börner, the captain of the nearby passenger ship, said he’d had to steady his ship during “really violent” winds. During the storm, he said, the Bayesian seemed to disappear behind his ship.

Severe lightning and strong gusts were registered by the Italian air force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, according to Attilio Di Diodato, its director. “It was very intense and brief in duration,” he said.

The yacht, he said, had most likely been hit by a fierce downburst — a blast of powerful wind surging down during a thunderstorm — or by a waterspout, a phenomenon similar to a tornado over water. His agency put out rough-sea warnings the previous evening, alerting sailors about storms and strong winds.

Locals have said the winds “felt like an earthquake,” and a fisherman in Porticello told an Italian newspaper he had seen a waterspout shortly before 4 a.m., and a flare go off around 4:10. He ventured to the site once the weather had calmed about 20 minutes later, he said, finding only cushions and planks.

What if the hatches or doors were left open?

Costantino has argued that the Bayesian was an extremely safe vessel that could list even to 75 degrees without capsizing. His company, the Italian Sea Group, in 2022 bought the yacht’s manufacturer, Perini Navi, which launched the ship in 2008.

Costantino said that if some of the hatches on the side and in the stern, or some of the deck doors, had been open, the boat could have taken on water and sunk. Standard procedure in such storms, he said, would be to switch on the engine, lift the anchor and turn the boat into the wind, lowering the keel for extra stability, closing doors and gathering the guests in the main hall inside the deck.

At a news conference Saturday, investigators said the yacht had sunk at an angle, with its stern — where the heavy engine was — having gone down first. The wreck was found lying on its right side at the bottom of a bay, about 165 feet deep.

Water pouring into open hatches or doors could have contributed to the sinking, experts say, but that on its own may not account for the speed at which such a large boat vanished underwater.

Asked about the hatches at the news conference, authorities declined to comment on whether they had been found open at the wreck.

Authorities have also not specified whether the boat had been anchored, whether it was under power at the time or whether its sails had been unfurled.

Could human error have possibly played a role?

Ambrogio Cartosio, the prosecutor in charge of the case, said at the news conference that it was “plausible” crimes had been committed, but that investigators had not zeroed in on any potential suspects.

“There could be responsibilities of the captain only,” he said. “There could be responsibilities of the whole crew. There could be responsibilities of the boat makers. Or there could be responsibilities of those who were in charge of surveilling the boat.”

It remains unclear what kind of emergency training or preparation took place before the disaster, or what kind of coordination there was during it. So far, none of the surviving crew members have made a public statement about what happened the night the ship sank.

Prosecutors said they want to ask more questions of the captain and crew, who have been in a Sicilian hotel with other survivors. They said that neither alcohol nor drug tests had been performed on crew members, and that they have been allowed to leave Italy.

Prosecutors also said they were also investigating why the captain, an experienced sailor, left the sinking boat while some passengers were still on board.

Besides possible manslaughter charges, authorities are investigating the possibility of a negligently caused shipwreck.

The bodies of five passengers were found in one cabin, on the left side of the yacht, authorities said. The five were most likely trying to flee to the higher side of the boat and were probably sleeping when the boat started to sink, they said.

Medieval history

Modern history, administrative and municipal status, demographics, transportation, notable people, twin towns and sister cities, external links.

Astrakhan was formerly the capital of the Khanate of Astrakhan (a remnant of the Golden Horde ) of the Astrakhan Tatars , and was located on the higher right bank of the Volga, seven miles (11   km) from the present-day city. Situated on caravan and water routes, it developed from a village into a large trading centre, before being conquered by Timur in 1395 and captured by Ivan the Terrible in 1556 and in 1558 it was moved to its present site.

The oldest economic and cultural center of the Lower Volga region, [16] it is often called the southernmost outpost of Russia, [17] and the Caspian capital. [18] [19] The city is a member of the Eurasian Regional Office of the World Organization United Cities and Local Governments . [20] The great ethnic diversity of its population gives a varied character to Astrakhan. The city is the center of the Astrakhan metropolitan area .

The name is a corruption of Hashtarkhan, itself a corruption of Haji Tarkhan ( حاجی‌ ترخان )—a name amply evidenced in the medieval writings. Tarkhan is possibly a Turco-Mongolian title standing for "great khan ", or "king", while haji or hajji is a title given to one who has made the Islamic requisite of pilgrimage to Mecca . Together, they denoted "the king who has visited Mecca". [ citation needed ] The city has given its name to the particular pelts from young karakul sheep , and in particular to the hats traditionally made from the pelts. [ citation needed ]

Colloquially, the city is known by the short form Astra . Another popular nickname is The Caspian Capital . [ citation needed ]

Astrakhan is in the Volga Delta , which is rich in sturgeon and exotic plants. The fertile area formerly contained the capitals of Khazaria and the Golden Horde . Astrakhan was first mentioned by travelers in the early 13th century as Xacitarxan . Tamerlane burnt it to the ground in 1395 during his war with the Golden Horde . From 1459 to 1556, Xacitarxan was the capital of Astrakhan Khanate by the Astrakhan Tatars . The ruins of this medieval settlement were found by archaeologists 12   km upstream from the modern-day city.

Starting in A.D. 1324, Ibn Battuta , the famous Berber Muslim traveler, began his pilgrimage from his native city of Tangier , present-day Morocco to Mecca. Along the 12,100-kilometer (7,500   mi) trek, which took nearly 29 years, Battuta came in contact with many new cultures, which he writes about in his diaries. One specific country that he passed through on his journey was the Golden Horde ruled by the descendants of Genghis Khan , located on the Volga River in southern Russia; which Battuta refers to as the river Athal. He then claims the Athal is, "one of the greatest rivers in the world". In the winter, the Khan stays in Astrakhan. Due to the cold water, Özbeg Khan ordered the people of Astrakhan to lay many bundles of hay down on the frozen river. He does this to allow the people to travel over the ice. When Battuta and the Khan spoke about Battuta visiting Constantinople, which the Khan granted him permission to do, the Khan then gifted Battuta with fifteen hundred dinars, many horses, and a dress of honor. [21] [22]

In 1556, the khanate was conquered by Ivan the Terrible , who had a new fortress, or kremlin , built on a steep hill overlooking the Volga in 1558. This year is traditionally considered to be the foundation of the modern city. [3]

In 1569, during the Russo-Turkish War , Astrakhan was besieged by the Ottomans, who had to retreat in disarray. A year later, the Ottoman sultan renounced his claims to Astrakhan, thus opening the entire Volga River to Russian traffic. [ citation needed ] The Ottoman Empire , though militarily defeated, insisted on safe passage for Muslim pilgrims and traders from Central Asia as well as the destruction of the Russian fort on the Terek River . [23] In the 17th century, the city was developed as a Russian gate to the Orient. Many merchants from Armenia , Safavid Persia , Mughal India , [24] [25] and Khivan Khanate settled in the town, giving it a cosmopolitan character.

For seventeen months in 1670–1671, Astrakhan was held by Stenka Razin and his Cossacks . Early in the following century, Peter the Great constructed a shipyard here and made Astrakhan the base for his hostilities against Persia, and later in the same century Catherine the Great accorded the city important industrial privileges. [26]

The city was held from 1707 by the Cossacks under Kondraty Bulavin during the Bulavin Rebellion until they were defeated the next year. A Kalmuck khan laid an abortive siege to the kremlin several years before that.

In 1717, it became the seat of Astrakhan Governorate , whose first governors included Artemy Petrovich Volynsky and Vasily Nikitich Tatishchev . Six years later, Astrakhan served as a base for the first Russian venture into Central Asia . In 1702, 1718 and 1767, it suffered severely from fires; in 1719 it was plundered by the Safavid Persians; and in 1830, cholera killed much of the populace. [26]

The Astrakhan Kremlin was built from the 1580s to the 1620s from bricks taken from the site of Sarai Berke . Its two impressive cathedrals were consecrated in 1700 and 1710, respectively. Built by masters from Yaroslavl , they retain many traditional features of Russian church architecture, while their exterior decoration is definitely baroque .

In March 1919 after a failed workers' revolt against Bolshevik rule, 3,000 to 5,000 people were executed in less than a week by the Cheka under orders from Sergey Kirov . Some victims had stones tied around their necks and were thrown into the Volga. [27] [28]

During Operation Barbarossa , the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, the A-A line running from Astrakhan to Arkhangelsk was to be the eastern limit of German military operation and occupation. The plan was never carried out, as Germany captured neither the two cities nor Moscow . In the autumn of 1942, the region to the west of Astrakhan became one of the easternmost points in the Soviet Union reached by the invading German Wehrmacht , during Case Blue , the offensive which led to the Battle of Stalingrad . Light armored forces of German Army Group A made brief scouting missions as close as 35   km to Astrakhan before withdrawing. In the same period, elements of both the Luftwaffe 's KG 4 and KG 100 bomber wings attacked Astrakhan, flying several air raids and bombing the city's oil terminals and harbor installations.

In 1943, Astrakhan was made the seat of a Soviet oblast within the RSFSR . The oblast was retained as a national province of the independent Russian Federation in the 1991 administrative reshuffle after the dismemberment of the Soviet Union .

In the present day, Astrakhan is a large industrial centre of the Volga country, Russia, with a population of over 500,000. Starting nearly 400 years ago and continuing to the present day, Astrakhan has been Russia's main center of fish processing. The market for fish is a large component of the economy in this city. [29]

Owing to shared Caspian borders, Astrakhan recently has been playing a significant role in the relations between Russia and Azerbaijan. As the latter's government has been heavily investing into the wellbeing of the city, Astrakhan has recently begun to symbolize the friendship between both countries. In 2010 a bridge was constructed with donations from Azerbaijan, which was named "Bridge of Friendship". [30] Moreover, Azerbaijani government sponsored secondary school number 11, which carries the name of the national leader Heydar Aliyev , as well as a children's entertainment center named "Dream". [31] Apart from that, a park has been built in the center of Astrakhan which is dedicated to friendship between the two countries. In the last 5 years Astrakhan has been visited by top Azerbaijani delegations on several occasions. [32] [33] [34] [35]

After fraud was alleged in the mayoral election of 2012 and the United Russia candidate was declared the winner, organizers of the 2011–2012 Russian protests supported the defeated candidate, Oleg V. Shein of Just Russia , in a hunger strike . Protestors, buoyed by celebrities who support the reform movement, attracted 5,000 people to a rally on April 14. [36]

Astrakhan is the administrative center of the oblast . [10] Within the framework of administrative divisions , it is incorporated as the city of oblast significance of Astrakhan —an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts . [1] As a municipal division , the city of oblast significance of Astrakhan is incorporated as Astrakhan Urban Okrug . [11]

The city of Astrakhan is further subdivided into four administrative districts: Kirovsky, Leninsky, Sovetsky and Truskovsky.

Astrakhan is the archiepiscopal see of one of the metropolitanates and (as Astrakhan and Yenotayevka) eparchies of the Russian Orthodox Church , its only other suffragan being Akhtubinsk. [ citation needed ] There is also a Catholic community, served by the Church of the Assumption of Mary (Astrakhan) . There is also a substantial Muslim population made up of Astrakhan Tatars and other Muslims. [37] At 1777 the white Mosque was built, [38] and the Baku Mosque was built in 1907–1909.

According to the results of the 2021 Census, the population of Astrakhan was 475,629. [15]

The city lies on two banks of the Volga, in the upper part of the Volga Delta, on eleven islands of the Caspian Depression, 60 miles (100 km) from the Caspian Sea. At an elevation of 28 meters (92 ft) below sea level, it is the lowest city in Russia.

Astrakhan features a continental cold desert climate ( Köppen climate classification : BWk ) with cold winters and hot summers. Astrakhan is one of the driest cities in Europe. Rainfall is scarce but relatively evenly distributed throughout the course of the year with, however, more precipitation (58%) in the hot season (six hottest months of the year).

The below sea-level elevation and long distance from the ocean of Astrakhan significantly influences the climate. Winters are cold with average January temperature -3.6 °С (25.5 °F). Summer temperatures in Astrakhan are one of the highest in Russia with average Jule temperature 26.1 °С (79 °F) and may reach 40 °С (104 °F) and higher. The summers are much hotter than found further west on similar latitude in Europe and worldwide for 46°N with the notable exception of the interior Pacific Northwest of the United States. [ citation needed ] The mean annual temperature amplitude (difference between the mean monthly temperatures of the hottest and coldest months) is thus equal to 29.7 °С (85.5 °F) so the climate is truly continental. Spring and fall are basically transitional seasons between summer and winter.

A 48 Hour Guide to Astrakhan, Russia

Baskunchak salt lake, Astrakhan region, Russia

Travellers who venture into Astrakhan will enjoy the historical charm and cultural vibrancy of this old Silk Route town. The otherworldly Lake Baskunchak and extensive Delta wetlands are just a day trip away.

Astrakhan lies close to the Kazakhstan border where the Volga River flows into the Caspian Sea. It used to be a town on the old Silk Route and is built on more than 10 islands. Meander along canals and over bridges to soak up ancient Tatar, Christian and Islamic history. Venture into the surrounding countryside to enjoy the splendour of the Volga Delta wetlands and the region’s natural beauty.

Day one – Acquaint yourself with the city

Morning – Explore local history

Start the day by taking a walk through the Kryusha Quarter. It’s the city’s former Tatar and Persian area, and it remains a predominantly Muslim area. As such, there are clusters of mosques in various states of neglect and repair.

Starting at Ulitsa Kirova, walk along Kazanskaya Ulitsa until you reach a Lenin bust. If you cross over the canal, you’ll come across a well-kept park, complete with sculptures and a lake. Continue past it, and you’ll end up at the foot of the hill where the city’s Kremlin sits on top. A UNESCO World Heritage site with inviting gardens and temporary exhibitions, the Kremlin is not to be missed.

Pro tip: The Kryusha Quarter is fascinating to walk through, but it is still a little rough. It is fine to walk through during the day, but it is best to avoid it at night.

Afternoon – Discover Astrakhan’s cool hidey-holes

Once you’re finished at the Kremlin, cut through the Fraternal Gardens to the city’s hipster hangout, Rozmarin Cafe , and fill up on freshly cooked meals and refuel with strong coffee. Once revived, take a peek at the Museum of Military Glory, which is as patriotic as the name suggests. However, despite the museum’s nationalistic slant, it is a good place to learn about historical battles.

Afterwards, it is worth walking over to Moloko, a hip, modern canteen-style café, which is run by the same people as Rozmarin Cafe. Even if you’re still full from lunch, they are licensed. So, why not have a cheeky afternoon drink and a snack?

From Moloko , it’s another lazy stroll along the banks of the Kutum River to the banks of the Volga – the manicured riverfront is the city’s crowning glory. There are people to watch, sculptures to see, and sunsets to enjoy.

Evening – Enjoy riverside views

After all of that walking about, treat yourself to a delicious meal. Right on the waterfront, Yamato is an indulgent, top-notch Japanese restaurant. The menu offers Japanese dishes, sushi, pan-Asian and Asian-fusion meals, as well as a lot of classic European and Russian cuisine. And it’s not just the food that is good here – so is the decor, inspired by Japanese minimalism and traditional aesthetics.

Pro tip: Yamato is popular. Book a reservation or be prepared to wait for a little while.

Astrakhan Kremlin, which includes the Cathedral of the Assumption, is a UNESCO-listed must-see

Night – Embrace the local culture

For those who want to sample some high-brow culture, why not check out what ballet is showing? The Astrakhan State Theatre of Opera and Ballet may not have the same clout as other regional theatres, but like most ballet and opera in Russia, they are still done to an outstanding standard.

For those who want to kick on, take the short stroll over to Kul’tovyy Bar (Cult Bar) for dim lighting, live music and boozy drinks. It also serves reasonably priced food. After loading up on positive vibes, belt out a few tunes with new friends at any of the many karaoke bars in town, such as Chicago House.

Whatever time the night ends, rest your well-worn legs at the luxurious Novomoskovskaya Hotel , a 10-minute walk away from Kul’tovyy Bar. Sleeping options are limited in Astrakhan, but they are also affordable, which means this five-star hotel comes with a bargain price tag. It’s also right in the heart of the city, so the Kremlin and the central sights are all within walking distance.

Day two – Soak up the Astrakhan region’s beauty

Morning – Venture out to the great outdoors

Although the city still has plenty to offer, a trip to the surrounding countryside is a must. Around Astrakhan , the Volga River splinters off into thousands of streams and rivers, known as the Volga Delta Wetlands. The wetlands, filled with birds and animals, are lush and an adventure to explore.

Roads eventually peter out and make way for rivers and marshes. The further you explore the wetlands, the more likely you’ll need a boat. A trip into the wetlands is a day trip in itself, so don’t plan to cram too many countryside sights into your itinerary.

Pro tip: Many tour companies offer trips into the wetlands, so shop around to find a deal that you like. Parts of the area are protected, so tourists need a permit. Tourist agencies in Astrakhan can help you organise these. Procosta is a tour company that offers trips into the delta with a guide, and only Procosta tours can be taken without one of these permits.

Afternoon – Float in salty water

An alternative day trip is to Lake Baskunchak, near the Kazakhstan border. One of Russia’s major salt basins, it supplies the nation with approximately 80 percent of its salt. Back in the day, people used to flock here to reap the health benefits of the salty water and the clay, and legend has it that it is a place of healing. Despite, or because of, its otherworldly appearance and its far-flung locale, it remains a popular tourist destination, albeit an unusual one.

A swim in the lake is comparable to a dip in the Dead Sea , although many swimmers bring shoes because prickly salt covers the bottom of the lake-bed. The lake used to be an important stop on the Silk Route, as its seemingly endless supply of salt has long been a precious commodity.

Pro tip: Make sure you pack a picnic, plenty of fresh water and sunscreen because there aren’t any trees around the lake.

Evening – Feast on traditional dishes

All that country air will induce hunger that must be satiated. So, head straight to Mindal (which translates to Almond) to feast on steaming hot Georgian khachapuri and Uzbek pilaf and other drool-inducing dishes. A top restaurant in town, Mindal serves up hearty central Asian and Caucasian dishes in a casual, yet stylish setting – a perfect treat to end a long day spent on the road and in the great outdoors.

Night – Relax with a beer

Mindal has a licensed bar that also serves up hookahs, so if you are suffering from a post-pigout food coma, and are exhausted from the day, hang around and enjoy yourself for a little bit longer. But if you want a change of scenery, visit Akademiya Piva, (Beer Academy). This restaurant and brewery is not only a stumble away from the hotel, but it is an opportunity to try a local brew or two. Of their five house-made beers, one is brewed in the style of the iconic Soviet beer, Zhigulevskoye.

Pro tip: If you want to relax after dinner at Mindal, book a booth table and make yourself comfortable. Also, for those on a budget, Akademiya Piva serves pub grub at a reasonable price.
