16 Best Cabin Cruiser Boat Brands With Range That Can Plane

2nd nov 2023 by lenny rudow.

Rightboat logo

There are many different types of boats with cabins , so the term “cabin cruisers” is a bit of a catch-all, but if you’re interested in finding a powerboat with a cabin that can run for long distances at and above planing speeds, the cabin cruiser moniker fits. There’s a huge range of boats fitting into this category, but which are the best? What manufacturers build the best small cabin cruiser boats , and at the opposite end of the spectrum, the best luxury cabin cruiser boats? Who makes the best cabin cruiser boats for families? We’ll answer these questions, and more.

Best Small Cabin Cruiser Boats

Smaller boats are less expensive than larger ones, and thus there are a lot of them out there. Still, to qualify for this category, a boat must have enough room and appointments to arguably be among the best overnight cabin cruisers because if you can’t sleep aboard, you’ll miss out on half the fun. That means boats under the 25-foot mark don’t make the cut, while any boat over 30 feet can’t really be called “small”. Within the five-foot range in between, these are the manufacturers who build stand-out boats.

Crownline boats offers three models that fit into the small cabin cruiser category, the 270 CR, 280 CRX, and 294 CR. Cabins are designed around convertibility, with a forward U-shaped settee that can change into a dinette or an extended V-berth. The galleys are fully outfitted for cruising, too, and even the smallest model includes a stove-top, refrigerator, microwave oven, sink, and cabinetry.

Ranger Tugs

Ranger Tugs builds three models that fall into the small cabin cruiser category, the R-23 (a 28’5” long, 8’6” wide boat), the R25 Northwest Edition, and the R25 Luxury Edition (which share the same dimensions). The main differences between these models is in how they’re outfitted; however, all share the same essential layout with a forward lower V-berth, an enclosed head compartment, a small galley behind the helm, and a dinette to port with a second mini-berth underneath of it.

Regal has been building boats going all the way back to 1969. Today, their extensive lineup includes a 26 Express, 26 XO, and 28 Express, which all will earn votes for best small cabin cruiser boats. (They also have a 24’5” model cuddy-cabin boat suitable for weekending, which is a little small but worthy of noting). These boats are commonly termed “mid-cabin” cruisers, because they have an elevated cockpit with a small cabin just forward of the powerplant. Although everything may be a bit miniaturized as compared to larger cabin cruisers, they’re complete with saloons that convert to berths, enclosed private head compartments, and galleys.

Best Cabin Cruiser Boats for Beginners

New boaters hunting for the best cabin cruiser boats for beginners will probably be interested in finding a boat that’s relatively simple operate, easy to maintain, and doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. These three top choices fit the bill for beginners.

Defiance Boats

Defiance mostly builds fishing boats; however, they have one model which works for beginner cruisers and a second one that might be termed a “micro-cruiser.” The 250 San Juan has an extended pilothouse with a V-berth forward, a dinette (which converts into a second berth) and small galley. The boat is small, simple, has an open aft cockpit, and will be incredibly easy to maintain as compared to boats with carpeting and lots of upholstery. The 220 San Juan is worth a mention despite its diminutive size, because it has the same cabin features but a smaller cockpit.

The name Jeanneau may bring sailboats to mind, but this company also builds a wide range of powerboats. And among them, the NC Weekender series will prove a great choice for beginner cruisers. Ranging from 24’5” all the way up to a 41-footer (though the upper end of that range will be a bit much for beginners), the NC Weekenders have fully enclosed cabins with an open cockpit aft, swim platforms, dinettes, and sleeping accommodations for at least four people.

Katanacraft

How do you radically reduce maintenance on a cabin cruiser? Build it out of aluminum. Katanacraft boats are welded with 0.250” thick bottoms and 0.160” sides, so they’re as rugged as they come—no waxing, rubbing, or buffing needed. This builder focuses on fishing boats, and their Monsoon 250 and Monsoon 280 are intended for making big catches, but they also have full cabins with V-berths and heads. The galley with dinette is one option you’ll need to get for cruising, and if you plan to head out in chilly conditions there are also options for diesel heaters and full Alaskan bulkheads.

Best Cabin Cruiser Boats for Families

What makes a cabin cruiser great for families? In truth, all boats are great for family time and your spouse and kids are bound to love whichever you choose. Each of these brands, however, do have extra advantages for the whole crew.

Beneteau has a huge range of both sail and powerboats, but for a cruising family, two offerings in the Flyer series, the 29’10” Flyer 9 SUNdeck and the 34’10” Flyer 10, have an unusual trick up their sleeves. These boats can be equipped with a tow arch to pull water skis and wakeboards. What kids won’t find that an attractive addition to a boat that has a full cabin with all the amenities needed for cruising? None of them!

Boston Whaler

Boston Whaler builds a model line called the Conquest, which includes the 285, 325, and 405. All offer full cabins with all the comforts of home. So, what makes these earn a spot among the best cabin cruiser boats for families? Boston Whalers are built with a fiberglass-foam-fiberglass sandwich construction which makes them completely unsinkable. And when your loved ones are all aboard, that trait alone delivers so much peace of mind that there’s no doubt Boston Whaler belongs in this roundup.

Sea Ray is one of the most popular recreational boat builders on the planet, and all of the models in their Sundancer series (ranging from 32’10” to 37’8”) are ideal for family boating. Sea Ray takes a bit of a different approach than most with their modern Sundancer line, including bow cockpit seating above the cabin. Food prep areas shift to the topsides to give cabin space a boost. This means you enjoy expanded outdoor areas you and your kids can enjoy, without giving up topnotch luxury levels and spacious overnighting abilities inside.

Best Cabin Cruiser Fishing Boats

Maybe you can drop a line from any old cabin cruiser, but to truly rate among the best cabin cruiser fishing boats the cockpit and accessories have to be designed specifically for angling. Fortunately, there are plenty of eminently fishable cabin cruisers on the water.

Yes, Boston Whaler has already appeared in this roundup, but their boats unquestionably rate a spot in the best cabin cruiser fishing boats section, as well. All of their models come ready to fish right out of the box and along with all the standard-issue armaments, Whalers also feature surprisingly fast cruising speeds (usually in the mid-30-mph range or above) along with extended ranges that make offshore fishing a possibility.

Grady-White

Grady-White boats are all designed for serious anglers from their smallest to their largest. The models that will be of interest to cruisers include the Express Cabin 330 and 370, the Marlin 300, and the 456 Canyon—which may be considered a center console but is so large it has a full cabin with all the comforts of home inside the console. All of these boats have everything you’ll need for serious angling, too, ranging from livewells to fishboxes to rod holders.

Mikelson Yachts

Though the level of expense goes far beyond most of the other boats we’ve talked about here, Mikelson Yachts builds a series of cruising yachts ranging from their 43 to their 75 that are well equipped for fishing. These take luxury to the next level, with multiple private staterooms, full saloons, and flying bridges. However, they also have open aft cockpits designed and outfitted for offshore fishing.

Best Luxury Cabin Cruisers

What separates a luxury cabin cruiser from a yacht? There’s no dictionary delineation we know of, and each of the cabin cruiser brands we look at here could easily be called a yacht. If you’re ready to experience the ultimate in floating luxury, give these top picks a look.

Cruisers Yachts

Cruisers Yachts redefined the cabin cruiser with its Cantius series decades ago, and this lineup continues to be very popular among boaters who enjoy cruising in complete comfort. The Cantius ranges from 42 to 60 feet, all with trademark features like massive saloon and hull-side windows, retractable sunroofs (except on flybridge models), full-beam staterooms, cedar-lined closets, and bow lounges.

Sabre Yachts

The Sabre lineup ranges from 38 to 58, all with topnotch fit, finish, upholstery, and woodwork throughout. Where these boats separate themselves from the crowd, however, is their traditional Downeast designs. Built in Maine with the classic look of a lobster boat, Sabres draw the eye in a way few cabin cruisers can match.

Sabre Salon Express 48

Tiara Yachts builds a mix of dayboats and cruisers from 34’9” to 60’3”, and the entire lineup is well known for being infused with luxury. They have some rather spectacular features, as well, including huge loungers and sofas that can spin 360-degrees, saloons surrounded entirely by windows, and full-beam staterooms naturally lighted by huge hull-side windows.

Best Aft Cabin Cruisers

To some it may seem strange to focus on the best aft cabin cruiser boats, because in many markets this type of boat has more or less disappeared. In fact, most major American boat builders ceased producing aft cabin cruisers a decade or more ago. However, you’ll find them on the used boat market and there are a few European builders who still manufacture them.

UK boatbuilder Hardy Motor Yachts offers a range of aft cabin cruisers culminating with the 65DS, one of the largest aft cabin cruisers around. As expected these boats take advantage of their extra interior territory by adding private staterooms, while the area above is utilized in the form of an elevated cockpit. Note that the 65DS won for Best Passagemaker in the 2019 Motorboating & Yachting awards.

Hardy 42H

A Norwegian builder, Marex, has in its lineup the 320 Aft Cabin, which houses a substantial aft cabin below a sunpad, aft behind the helm deck. Utilizing the space in this fashion, the 320 has two separate private staterooms, a saloon, and a fully enclosed head with shower, all packaged inside of a 32’5” LOA. Note that on its introduction in 2013, the 320 Aft Cabin won multiple awards including Motorboat of the Year, European Yacht of the Year, Best Boat over 25 Feet at the Oslo International Boat Show, and Adriatic Boat of the Year.

So, are you ready to run right out and buy one of these best cabin cruiser boats? Maybe, but probably not so fast. Buying a boat is a long process that requires lots of careful thought, research, and legwork. At least now, however, you have some top prospects to choose from.

11 Best Pocket Cruiser Sailboats to Fit a Budget

  • By Cruising World Staff
  • Updated: May 24, 2024

Looking for a trailerable pocket cruiser that offers that liveaboard feeling? This list features 11 small sailboats with cabins that have the amenities often found on larger vessels. They may not be ocean crossing vessels, but they’re certainly capable of handling big bays and open waters.

What is a pocket cruiser? It’s a small trailerable sailboat, typically under 30 feet in length, that’s ideal for cruising big lakes, bays, coastal ocean waters, and occasionally bluewater cruising. Pocket cruisers are usually more affordable, compact, and offer a level of comfort that’s comparable to bigger liveaboards.

Small cruising sailboats are appealing for many reasons, but if you’re like most of us, you want to maintain a certain level of comfort while on the water. We took a poll and these are what we found to be the best cruising sailboats under 30 feet.

– DON’T LET CARBON MONOXIDE SNEAK UP ON YOU – Install detectors on your boat to sniff out any buildup of carbon monoxide gas. Avoid running engines or generators while anchored or stopped for extended periods. Safety Tip Provided by the U.S. Coast Guard

Andrews 28

Open and airy below deck, the Andrews 28 doesn’t sacrifice comfort for speed. Designed by Alan Andrews, the Southern California naval architect renowned for his light, fast raceboats, this 28-footer will certainly appeal to the cruiser who also enjoys a little club racing. Sporting a total of 6 berths, a galley, head and nav area, you might forget you are on a boat small enough to be easily trailered. The retractable keel allows the Andrews 28 to be easily launched and hauled and ensures it’s as comfortable as a daysailer as it is a racer. Click here to read more about the Andrews28.

Beneteau First 20

First 20 at sunset

Small sailboat with a cabin? Check! Fun to sail? Modern design? Capable of flying a spinnaker? Check! Check! Check! The Finot-Conq-designed Beneteau First 20, which replaced the popular Beneteau first 211 nearly a decade ago now, is a sporty-but-stable pocket cruiser suitable for newcomers to the sport who are eager to learn their chops before moving up to a bigger boat or for old salts looking to downsize to a trailerable design. The boat features twin rudders, a lifting keel, and a surprisingly roomy interior with bunks for four. Click here to read more about the Beneteau First 20 .

Ranger 26

Conceived as a way to bridge the gap between a safe, comfortable, family cruiser and a competitive racer, Gary Mull’s Ranger 26 does exactly as it was designed to. Undeniably fast, (one won the 1970 IOR North American Half-Ton Cup) the boat sails as well as it looks. However speed isn’t the Ranger’s only strong-suit, with over 7 feet of cockpit there’s plenty of room for socializing after an evening of racing. The Ranger 26 sports a nice balance of freeboard and cabin height ensuring that a handsome profile wasn’t sacrificed for standing headroom. Click here to read more about the Ranger 26.

Nonsuch 30 left side

Catboats were once a common site in coastal waters, where they sailed the shallow bays as fishing or work boats. Their large single and often gaff-rigged sail provided plenty of power, and a centerboard made them well-suited for the thin waters they frequently encountered. In the late 1970s, Canadian builder Hinterhoeller introduced the Nonsuch 30, a fiberglass variation of the catboat design, with a modern Marconi sail flown on a stayless mast, and a keel instead of a centerboard. The boat’s wide beam made room below for a spacious interior, and the design caught on quickly with cruising sailors looking for a small bluewater sailboat. Click here to read more about the Nonsuch 30 .

– SHOW THEM HOW MUCH YOU CARE – Nothing says ‘I love you’ like making sure the kids’ life jackets are snugged up and properly buckled. Safety Tip Provided by the U.S. Coast Guard

Newport 27

Debuted in 1971 in California, the Newport 27 was an instant success on the local racing scene. For a modest 27-footer, the Newport 27 has an unusually spacious interrior with over 6 feet of standing headroom. With 4 berths, a table, nav station, head and galley the Newport 27 has all the amenities you might find in a much bigger boat, all in a compact package. While quick in light air, the drawback of the tiller steering becomes apparent with increasing breeze and weather helm often leading to shortening sail early. Click here to read more about the Newport 27.

Balboa 26

First splashed in 1969, the Balboa 26 continues to enjoy a strong following among budget-minded cruisers. Built sturdy and heavy, all of the boat’s stress points are reinforced. The spacious cockpit comfortably seats 4 and is self bailing, ensuring that sailors stay dry. While only 26 feet, the Balboa still has room for a double berth, galley with stove and freshwater pump, and an optional marine head or V-berth. The Balboa has the ability to sleep five, though the most comfortable number is two or three. Under sail, the Balboa is fast and maneuverable, but may prove a handful in heavy breeze as weather helm increases. Click here to read more about the Balboa 26.

Cape Dory 28

Cape Dory 28

While the sleek lines and the teak accents of the Cape Dory 28 may grab the eye, it is the performance of the boat that make it unique. The Cape Dory comes with all amenities that you might need available, including a V-berth, 2 settees, and a head. Safe, sound and comfortable as a cruiser it is still capable of speed. Quick in light wind and sturdy and capable in heavy air, it is off the wind where the Cape Dory 28 shines with a balanced helm and the ability to cut through chop and still tack perfectly. Click here to read more about the Cape Dory 28.

Islander Bahama 28

Islander Bahama 28

On top of being a real eye-catcher, the Islander Bahama 28, with its 5-foot-6-inch draft and 3,300 pounds of ballast, sails beautifully, tracks well, and responds quickly to the helm. Inspired by the International Offshore Rule, it is unusually wide, offering stability in breeze without sacrificing the sheer and lines that make it so attractive. Below deck, the Islander Bahama 28 comes standard with plenty of berths and storage space and a galley complete with stove, icebox and sink. Click here to read more about the Islander Bahama 28.

– CHECK THE WEATHER – The weather changes all the time. Always check the forecast and prepare for the worst case. Safety Tip Provided by the U.S. Coast Guard

S2 8.6

Much like its older sibling, the S2 8.6 still holds its contemporary style, despite its 1983 introduction. Like all other S2 Yachts, the 8.6 is recognized for the quality craftsmanship that allows the boat to hold up today. The S2 8.6 is a very comfortable and easily managed coastal cruiser and club racer. It’s relatively stiff, its helm feels balanced, and it tracks well. On most points of sail, it compares favorably with other boats of similar size and type. Click here to read more about the S2 8.6.

Contessa 26

Contessa 26

When the Contessa 26 was released in 1965, it immediately proved itself to be a strong, seaworthy vessel. The Contessa has continued to prove itself throughout its lifetime, being the boat of choice for two solo circumnavigations under the age of 21. While upwind performance leaves some wanting, the boat is sturdy and can carry full sail in up to 20 knots of breeze. Suited more for single-handing, the Contessa lacks standing headroom and the accommodations are sparse. Nonetheless, the Contessa 26 performs well as a daysailer with guests aboard. Click here to read more about the Contessa 26.

Hunter 27

The Hunter 27 perfectly encompasses the pocket cruiser ideal. Even if you don’t want a big boat, you can still have big boat amenities. With the generously spacious layout, wheel steering and a walkthrough transom the Hunter feels much larger than 27 feet. Step below deck and any doubts you had that the Hunter was secretly a big boat will be gone. The amenities below are endless; a full galley including stove, microwave and cooler, head with full shower, several berths and not to mention a saloon with seating for 6. The Hunter 27 has reset the benchmark for 27-footers. Click here to read more about the Hunter 27.

Best cabin cruisers: 5 of the most versatile options under 30ft

  • Top stories

Serial boat owner Elliott Maurice picks out 5 of the best cabin cruisers and explains what makes them stand out in this highly competitive market…

Some of the most successful cabin cruiser designs can trace their lineage back to the ‘weekender’ style boats from the likes of Chris-Craft , which originated in 1960s America with the aim of accommodating a whole family for a weekend away.

The 1960 Chris Craft Cavalier 25 offered a galley, complete with a sink and gas hob, enclosed head, a forward V berth cabin and convertible saloon with a drop-down table creating a midships berth suitable for children.

Allowing weekends away with facilities only previously available from larger purpose-built motor yachts, the cabin cruiser concept took off.

The 1980s saw some excellent boats appear from the likes of Fairline with models such as the Mirage 29 Aft Cabin and the Holiday 23. These boats brought weekend cruising comfort to the rivers, estuaries, and coastlines of Europe in huge numbers.

Now over 50 years later the choice of small family cabin cruisers is excellent, with offerings from both sides of the Atlantic providing the ideal solution, even offering extended liveaboard cruising in a trailerable sized boat.

When considering what is the best cabin cruiser boat for you, there are a few key things to consider. Where do you plan to use it? A coastal boat will require significantly more horsepower than a river boat.

How long will you spend on board? Liveaboard cabin cruisers will prioritize interior comfort over outside lounging space. Personal style and price will also be key guiding factors.

I have selected what I consider to be some of the best weekender and compact cabin cruisers available on the market today.

The Marlin version of the Jeanneau Merry Fisher 895 won our 2020 Motor Board Award for Best Wheelhouse or Cockpit Cruiser

Jeanneau Merry Fisher 895 Sport

Best all-round cabin cruiser

A great starting point and overall, a great boat. This nearly 29ft long cabin cruiser (including pulpit and outboard ) offers everything a small family could want for weekends away, with two light and comfortable berths in separate double cabins, an excellent helm and cockpit with a comfortable dinette seating four.

You also get full standing headroom in the ensuite, with a pullout shower, and all of this is accommodated in a sturdy and capable hull. Power options range from a single 175hp outboard up to twin 250hp engines, so the Merry Fisher can be powered to suit both inland river and coastal conditions.

Extras include bow thruster, reverse cycle heat and air air-conditioning and, as the name suggests, plenty of fishing options. The light and airy Jeanneau can be upgraded significantly to well over $160,000. However even at the starting price of $130,000 the 895 Sport makes an excellent and versatile small family cabin cruiser.

Ranger tug r29s.

Best liveaboard cabin cruiser

A modern American classic, the R29S is a marvel for its size. Designed more as a small ship than a normal pleasure boat, the R29 is only offered with a single 320hp Volvo D4 diesel engine. Bow and stern thrusters are fitted as standard for easy docking.

The Ranger is an expensive option starting at a lofty $350,000, however it is capable of comfortably taking a couple bluewater cruising around the Bahamas or on the 5,500-mile trip around the American Great Loop. Featuring curved glass wheelhouse windows with opening glass roof hatches, the R29S has an excellent helm with superb visibility and a robust, seaworthy hull.

Accommodation can be heated or air conditioned for cruising comfort, all the while the D4 is sipping just 2gph at 7 knots, giving a cruising range of 500 miles. But there’s enough top end to punch a tide when you need to – the top speed on the R29S is a healthy 23.4 knots.

The comprehensive standard inventory includes 12in Garmin MFD, AIS and xHD radar, while optional extras include dingy and davits, generator, solar panels, ice maker, TVs in the saloon and master, and even an aft docking station.

Although the Ranger can sleep up to six, it is built to accommodate two in long distance comfort usually only equalled by boats in the 40ft+ class.

Finnmaster-pilot-8-cabin-boat-test-review-running-shot

We likened the Pilot 8 to a seagoing SUV in our 2020 review

Finnmaster Pilot 8

Best high performance cabin cruiser

Due to the tough local weather conditions, Scandinavian boats are built to a higher standard than most brands, and the Finnmaster is no exception. Exceptionally rugged, the Pilot 8 is an extremely capable and fast sea boat, with accommodation for up to six people.

The 27ft 6in Pilot 8 can reach a speed of 43.5 knots flat out, with power coming from twin 200hp outboard engines. Starting at around €150,000, the Pilot 8 is top notch in terms of its fit and finish throughout.

With its 18in Garmin MFD, optional joystick control, rugged forward canting windscreen and bucket helm seat, the helm of the Pilot 8 is well suited to making the most of the boat’s performance capabilities.

What’s more, a handy side door leading off the asymmetric wheelhouse to a wide side deck provides excellent access to the fore deck for docking maneuvers.

More compact and performance orientated than its French rivals, the Finnmaster is still capable of accommodating four people in comfort, with a cockpit galley that features a diesel-powered hob, microwave, sink and refrigerator.

A decent enclosed heads with pull out shower and two separate sleeping cabins bely the boat’s performance capabilities, and with options like a high-end Fusion stereo, diesel heating and HD radar, the Finnmaster offers a lot of flexibility.

Regal 28 Express

Best warm weather cabin cruiser

Better suited to warmer climes, the Regal is more of a mini-Med style cabin cruiser than its all-weather rivals. When it comes to outdoor lounging and sun worshipping, the Regal does things better than most.

Accommodation is far more open below – the air-conditioned cabin includes a double berth situated aft under the cockpit and a forward double berth created by dropping the forward table and adding an infill cushion, while the enclosed head boasts 6ft of standing headroom and a pull-out shower.

The lower galley comes equipped with an electric hob, microwave, refrigerator and sink that can easily cater for simple meals and breakfast on board.

Where the Regal offers a different approach is in its open cockpit design with multiple sunbathing spaces, seating that converts into a sun pad and an outdoor wet bar. With power up to a 380hp Volvo petrol sterndrive, the 28 Express is capable of just under 32 knots flat out.

The Regal can cope with fair weather coastal navigation between marinas, and it is ideal for lounging at a sandbar or anchored off a beach. With the optional 32in TV in the saloon and a large wraparound sofa, family weekends away are easily accommodated. And as a handy bonus, the radar arch can be lowered electrically to reduce bridge clearance when towing.

beneteau-antares-8-MBY278.newboat_3.Ben1

The Beneteau Antares 8 comes in Cruising and Fishing variants

Beneteau Antares 8

Best value cabin cruiser

Starting at an exceptionally low $88,000 the Antares 8 should definitely be in the mix if you’re searching for the best cabin cruiser on a budget. Although cost savings are evident compared to some of the boats mentioned above, the Antares is an excellent small weekender.

Power starts with a super quiet 200hp Mercury V6 outboard, or you can upgrade to the 250hp V8 single outboard. Options include an electric head, 12in Garmin MFD and Fusion sound system and, for fishing lovers, roof mounted rocket launcher style rod holders.

This two-cabin boat accommodates four using the convertible upper saloon as a double berth as well as the forward twin cabin, with the midships area reserved for storage.

A side door allows safe boarding for children off the dock, and at a compact 26ft 5in, this small cabin cruiser is well equipped for short family cruises.

A small but usable galley with a choice of gas or electric cooking, refrigeration, and plenty of seating for four people can be found in the convertible saloon.

The well-equipped helm with power steering, digital controls and optional bow thruster make the Antares an excellent starter boat, and with the optional lithium-ion air conditioning unit and large aft cockpit the Antares would work just as well in warmer climates as well as cooler ones.

Activities with Cabin Cruisers

GREAT FOR Day Cruising  • Overnight Cruising

The best cabin cruiser boats generally come fully-equipped for spending extended periods of time aboard, including sleeping, cooking, and bathroom accommodations—though on a boat, you always call the bathroom the “ head .” A large cabin cruiser will have enough space for private bedrooms (we call these “staterooms” in nautical parlance), and often can sleep up to a dozen people.

What if you down-size a bit? Let’s say you’ve found what you consider to be the best cabin cruiser under 40 feet. Models of this size are likely to have at least one private stateroom plus additional beds and berths for a guest couple or a boatload of kids. Go even smaller, maybe to a cabin cruiser under 30 feet, and there may be less elbow room. But even small cabin cruisers will likely have sleeping room for four to six people.

Having the ability to sleep aboard and cook in the galley (our nautical name for the kitchen) means that you have even more extensive travelling abilities than if you drove a car and stayed in a hotel room. Virtually all ports you might want to visit have slips for rent by the night or weekend, waterfront restaurants you can tie up at, and numerous attractions within easy walking- or ride-sharing distance.

One of the great things about a cabin cruiser is that along with that cabin, you get all the other perks and pleasures of owning any sort of boat. All of the best cabin cruiser boats have large swim platforms and ladders that make going for a dip and then re-boarding a piece of cake, large loungers and sunpads for relaxing, and decks where the kids can cast a fishing line. Day cruising can be just as much fun as staying on the boat overnight, and truth be told, there’s little limitation on the activities you have to choose from with a cabin cruiser underfoot.

Ownership Costs of Cabin Cruisers

The initial cost of a cabin cruiser can vary wildly, depending mostly on the size you choose. Sure, there are million-dollar cabin cruiser boats out there, but there are also plenty of small cabin cruisers that cost a lot less than you might think. In fact, many cost less than some motorhomes or RVs with comparable accommodations. To see what fits within your budget, be sure to utilize our Boat Loan Calculator .

Maintenance costs are certainly a factor every potential boat owner needs to consider in advance. Be sure to check out the Maintenance pages in our Owning a Boat section , which will give you an idea of what’s involved. Also remember that boats with multiple engines will have multiple maintenance costs.

Operation costs for a cabin cruiser can vary dramatically, since they depend to a great degree on just how you use the boat. Fortunately, there’s not much in the way of variables to worry about other than fuel. When considering your budget, however, you should also include the cost of mooring the boat. And in many areas of the nation storing your cabin cruiser in the off-season needs to be taken into account as well.

Cabin Cruiser Technology/Materials/Features

Like most aspects of life, modern technology has had a big impact on cabin cruiser boats. One of the biggest changes in recent years has been the adoption of outboard engines. Historically most cabin cruisers have had inboards or stern drives. But outboard engines have become much more reliable and fuel efficient, and today when you identify the best cabin cruiser under 30 feet for you and your family, you’re likely to discover that it’s an outboard boat. The larger the cabin cruisers you look at, the more likely it becomes that you’ll see inboards and also pod drives. See the Boat Motors section of our Buying a Boat guide , to learn more about these different power systems.

Another big leap forward that’s taken place regarding cabin cruiser technology in recent years is the digitization of a boat’s control systems. This has made interfacing with your boat much simpler and easier than it used to be, since many aspects of running your boat are more or less like using an app. When you want to turn on the anchor lights, for example, instead of looking around to find the right switch and toggling it, you can swipe to the lighting icon on the touch-screen at the helm—or sometimes right on your phone.

WHY FIRST 27 ?

sailboat cabin cruiser

MODERN & FAST

A light vacuum-infused hull, a modern design and a deep low-center-of-gravity keel make the First 27 significantly faster, delivering stable and safe planing sailing to anyone who sails her.

Very high stability due to an unsinkable hull combined with three unsinkable chambers, a crash-box, an inboard engine, and balanced twin rudders for complete control make safety one of her strongest points.

UNDER CONTROL

Carefully thought-out cockpit ergonomics, minimized and simplified deck controls, double winches, and a perfectly balanced steering system assure easy handling in single-handed, double-handed or fully-crewed setups.

A reliable 15 HP inboard engine coupled with simple linear shaft drive and foldable propeller guarantees high cruising speeds, ease of use and low maintenance.

Even with a fixed keel, the First 27 is a fully trailerable boat offering you a new level of freedom. You can easily discover distant shores without long sea deliveries, save on marina costs, and store your boat in your backyard during the off season.

SAILING EXPERIENCE

The main promise of the First 27 is her performance and unique sailing experience. Again and again, she will surprise you by getting to plane with as little as 12 knots of wind. Her stability comes from her wide, flat hull on the waterline and a lead T-bulb keel, and her easy handling comes from her carefully thought-out design and cockpit ergonomics. Increased bow volume, accompanied by a balanced twin-rudder steering system, keeps you in complete control, whether you are sailing upwind or safely planing downwind. The excitement of her lively planing and easy handling will become your afternoon sailing routine on the First 27!

LIVING ONBOARD

On top of matching the speeds of most racing boats, she also offers a surprising level of comfort. The clean and minimalistic light-weight interior offers all essential amenities for onboard living. She is designed to sleep up to 6 adults, 2 in the bow cabin and up to 4 in a very bright and openly-spaced salon, and is also equipped with a removable table and fridge. At the midpoint, you'll find a galley with a gas burner and a sink with fresh water. Thanks to innovative, foldable magnetic doors, the midpoint can also be converted into a proper marine toilet with a black water tank or used as a front cabin extension. A large and open cockpit welcomes you with comfortable benches, a removable indoor/outdoor table and a swim ladder with a shower on the stern.

11 Small Boats With Cabins You Can Afford (With Pictures)

' src=

If you’re looking for a small boat with a cabin, what you’re essentially looking for is either a trawler, a cuddy cabin, or a “cruiser”.

Let’s break down each category and find some great deals for each.

Table of Contents

After we’ve gone over these categories, we’ll also go over a few questions which need to be answered before you decide on a purchase.

What is the most affordable cabin cruiser or a small cabin boat?

There are a variety of cuddy cabins which are both affordable and spunky while out on the water.

You can find older models for sale between $20,000 and $30,000, and which are between 20’ and 25’ in length.

Some of the best options you can find are:

  • 20’ Pro-Line Hard Top
  • 22’ Sea Hunt 225 Victory
  • Sea Ray Sundeck
  • Stingray 21’ Cuddy Cabins

What is the best trawling boat?

While you might not be a fisherman at heart, some of the heartiest boats are fishing boats. They have bigger cabins for fisherman to relax after a hard day on the water as well as large storage areas for their gear.

Trawling is a method of fishing where the fisherman drags a net through the water behind them.

Recreational trawlers aren’t actually fishing boats, however. They resemble the vessel’s design, but that’s where the similarities end.

Remember that recreational trawlers use smaller engines than their fishing brethren; one which will only produce approximately 80 hp.

Trawlers have a dedicated following. These boats can be slow cruisers but, at their heart, they weren’t built for speed. After all, they are single-engine boats that can go from 7 knots to 20 knots.

One of the best values when it comes to trawling boats is the Carver c34 .

Here it is:

sailboat cabin cruiser

While it might not be as inexpensive as the other options in this article, at $371,820, you’re getting a smaller (34 feet long) more economical coastal cruiser.

More economical than a lot of the other boats of the same type on the market right now, which can range up to $500,000 – $900,000(!)

If you look for this boat used, you will most likely find it over $100,000 cheaper than the new sticker price.

What is the best boat to buy for a beginner?

The Glastron GS 259 is a 25-foot-long cruiser with a price range of about $77,000.

sailboat cabin cruiser

While the cabin is huge, as is the full galley, and the large dinette, the price also matches the large accommodations.

However, it will be difficult to find such accommodations on a boat of this size. Not only that, it comes recommended for a beginning boater by Lenny Rudow of Boats.com.

You should also check out the Trailcraft boat models .

What is the best cabin cruiser under 30 feet?

At 28 feet, the Bayliner 285 SB is a great cruiser which is still small enough to be towed and stored on your property.

sailboat cabin cruiser

But at the same time, it is still big enough to say overnight if you feel like going on a weekend excursion on your boat.

The price ranges from $96,000.

What is the best cabin cruiser under 25 feet?

A cabin cruiser is a powerboat with overnight accommodations and a galley.

They are generally faster than trawlers and cuddy cabins and can range from 25’ to 100’ in length. There are a number of different types of cruisers, including:

  • Aft cabin cruisers
  • Convertibles
  • Express cruisers
  • Motor yachts
  • Pocket cruiser

It cuts it close, but the Cutwater 242 Sport Coupe is just over 25’ (at 26’) and can be found for around $100,000.

sailboat cabin cruiser

It also comes in a longer 10’ model and has a double-stepped hull with a deep entry that turns into a moderate keel pad, which shows off its maximum efficiency.

It even has the option of coming with an electric grill built into the transom, and an adjacent sink.

The former is fully removable and can hide under a fully rigged livewell.

All of these small touches add to its appeal.

What if I don’t necessarily need a cabin?

If not having a cabin isn’t a deal breaker, your options for affordable boats just blew wide open:

The 16’2” Bayliner Element

($14,742) with a cruising speed in the mid 20’s can seat four.

The 17’11” Four Winns H180 OB

($24,451) includes a swing away tongue, full-sized walk-across swim platform, and Bluetooth-capable stereo with MP3 port and two speakers.

The 23’1” Larson LX 225S IO

($43,267) comes with a trailer that has disc brakes, a canvas bow, and cockpit covers. It also has an MP3-capable stereo.

Is it better to buy a used boat?

There are plenty of advantages to buying a used boat. The biggest advantage is the price.

While you might find some expensive boats listed on used vessel or vehicle websites, but you will find more reasonably priced used models than not.

Just like a car, a boat depreciates in value when it gets driven off of the lot.

Because of that, a used boat will better hold its value.

Another perk to buying used is the option to buy from a private seller or a dealer.

While there are many different perks, there are also a few disadvantages. One of which is that you never really know what you’re going to end up with.

You might be able to take it out for a ride with the seller but if you don’t have a boat mechanic look at it, you won’t really know what kind of wear and tear it’s been through.

If you do buy a boat used, make sure to inspect:

  • The hull for scratches, dents, and marring
  • The motor for damage
  • The upholstery for worn spots and tears in the vinyl
  • Broken levers

Don’t be shy about inspecting as much as you can.

sailboat cabin cruiser

An example of how to save money with a used boat is with the C Dory 23’ Venture Sport which weighs less than 3000 lbs. and has a fuel capacity of 60 gallons.

Fishermen will love how it tracks while you’re trolling, which will let you focus on fishing.

Every day boaters will love how much headroom is in the cabin and how much more pleasant it is to cruise on rough waters.

When you buy it new, it can be upwards to $100,000 but buying it used, instantly cuts the price in half or even as low as $35,000.

If you decide to find yourself a used boat, it would be best to check out some local options.

When is it better to buy a new boat?

A new boat ensures that you’re getting what you want.

The ability for customization is fantastic. From the paint scheme to the engine and turbines to the stereo system, you can fulfill your wish list in one stop.

New boats are both shiny and clean. You’ll rarely have any issues with the engine. You might also have the backing of a manufacturer’s warranty, which isn’t just a great deal of safety when it comes to your finances (in the long run) but is also great peace of mind.

The downside to buying a new boat is the price.

You’ll also have to deal with the depreciation, which starts as soon as you tow it off the lot. While it might cost a little more, look for high quality, trustworthy manufacturers and builders, which could help with the depreciation.

What exactly is a cuddy cabin on a boat?

A cuddy is another term for a small room on a boat. It comes from the 19 th century when they used to be referred to as saloon cabins, which were on the stern of ships.

These days it refers to a small shelter cabin , which has a small berth and head.

Normally, they are not tall enough to stand in but are still popular recreation boats for boaters who don’t quite want to upgrade to a full-size cabin boat.

A lot of fishermen use cuddy boats as their fishing boats because of the price, storage capabilities, and the small stature.

Final Thoughts

When going on a treasure hunt for your future boat, make sure that you have these things before you leave the house:

  • An idea of what you are going to use your boat for (watersports, racing, fishing, day trips, cruising, party boat, etc.)
  • An initial list of dreamboats you want to test out
  • Clear cut boundaries for price and options (AKA a “wish list”)

Remember that it may take a little while to find your dream boat.

It can be difficult to cull through all of the choices at the lots or on the internet. Know that the only way to make sure which boat is perfect for you is to take it out for a spin on the water.

If you’re still indecisive, that just means that you can go out and try out as many different boats as you can. This search doesn’t have to be a chore; go out and have fun.

Table of Contents

Cabin cruiser boats are lauded for their ability to offer the comfort of a home while one navigates the waters. They are the epitome of luxury and functionality, providing amenities such as sleeping quarters, a galley for cooking, and a bathroom.

  • Sea Ray Sundancer 370 Outboard
  • Cutwater C-30 Sedan Cabin Cruiser
  • Tiara EX 54
  • Jeanneau VELASCO 43F Cabin Cruiser
  • Regal 38 Fly Cabin Cruiser
  • Sea Ray Sundancer 320 Cabin Cruiser
  • Aspen 32 C100 Escape Power Cat Cabin Cruiser
  • Cruiser Yachts 39 Express Coupe
  • Back Cove Yachts 372 Cabin Cruiser
  • Sabre 38 Salon Express Cabin Cruiser

After being out in the hot sun all day, you can retreat to your cabin to get shade and relief from the elements.

It’s that time of night when it’s starting to get chilly. You can warm up inside the cozy confines of your cabin.

It’s also nice to have a cruiser with a cabin in case it starts to rain or gets too windy. This way, you can escape the harsh elements and have protection somewhere indoors.

Having a cabin on your cruiser completely changes the boating experience and makes your boat feel more like a home away from home than just a boat.

It allows you to make overnight trips and stay in the boat’s cabin, giving you the freedom to travel to different places you may not be able to if you didn’t have a cabin cruiser.

It also gives you the freedom to entertain and have guests stay overnight, depending on the size of the cabin and the number of beds inside.

Most cabins offer everything you need to stay overnight, including a kitchen, bathroom, sleeping quarters, electricity, hot water , and air conditioning and heating.

It’s like an RV or a camper; it’s only for the water instead of the road. You can sleep, cook food, use the restroom or shower, hang out, and relax in it.

Some cabins are more significant than others, so it is essential to determine how many people you’ll be having aboard your cabin cruiser when deciding what size cabin cruiser to get.

If you have a large family or like to entertain a larger group of guests, it is probably best to go with a larger boat equipped to comfortably fit a big group so that your guests all have somewhere to sit and are not cramped.

However, a larger one may not be necessary if you plan to use the cruiser only for yourself, your partner, a friend, or a small family.

Luckily, cabin cruisers come in all different sizes and layouts, so there’s something to suit everyone’s needs.

Considering the features and amenities a cabin cruiser offers can also help you determine the best for you and your needs. Some cabin kitchens have both stoves and ovens, while some do not.

Some boats also come equipped with outdoor grills and entertainment areas, while others do not.

Consider how much use you would get from the different features and amenities when deciding which cabin cruiser suits you best.

If you usually hang out outside, a boat with an outdoor grill and entertainment area may be a good choice for you and your needs.

If you like to spend a lot of time inside the cabin, finding a boat with a larger cabin and more amenities may be a better choice.

Of course, some cruisers have both of these things if you cannot choose one over the other.

Since I know that different people have different needs, I’ve compiled a list of cruisers with various features and amenities so that you can more easily choose which one is best for you.

I’ve also given the pros and cons of each cabin cruiser to make it easier for you to compare them.

It also has ample storage and a comfy U-shaped dinette with a retractable table in the center of it.

This cruiser’s massive, modern cabin sets it apart from other cruisers. Still, it also has other great features, like the shaft drive and double thrusters, which give this boat optimal cruising capabilities.

These features make for a much smoother ride that makes you feel like you’re gliding over the water.

  • Three beds that can sleep up to six people comfortably
  • Spacious, modernly designed cabin with luxurious features like polished hardwood cabinets, glass shower doors, and comfortable seating
  • A total of four levels, two cabins, and two heads, making it perfect for entertaining large groups

5. Regal 38 Fly Cabin Cruiser

Regal 38 Fly Cabin Cruiser

The VELASCO 43F by Jeanneau was extremely nice and spacious, but not everyone needs a cruiser that large.

If you’re looking for a smaller cruiser with space and capability to entertain some guests, or if you’re looking for one to entertain you and your partner or small family, then the Regal 38 Fly cabin cruiser by Regal could be a great option.

The 38 Fly, on the other hand, is a stylish platform that makes excellent use of available space. Regal’s attention to detail is evident, and the design aspects are sleek and contemporary.

Full facilities are above and below the deck, including an aft cockpit refrigerator, a full galley, and a fantastic aft cabin with a king bed that converts to twin beds as needed.

A concealed pocket door mechanism in the stateroom helps organize luggage, and a television adds to the room’s comfort. The flybridge, with a convex outside edge to optimize the room, is unexpectedly spacious.

6. Sea Ray Sundancer 320 Cabin Cruiser

Sea Ray Sundancer 320 Cabin Cruiser

Another great option if you’re looking for something a bit smaller is the Sundancer 320 cabin cruiser by Sea Ray. Experience the difference that comes with an opulent and functional design.

The Sundancer® 320 is meant to impress, from the wide bow lounging space to the sleek, comfortable cabin.

The Sundancer 320’s adaptability and smooth flow of internal and outdoor spaces give it an airy elegance that distinguishes it from classic sport cruisers. A coupe version of this vehicle is also available.

This is the perfect cabin cruiser for a small family or couple. It has enough seating in the cockpit for four or possibly five people to sit comfortably and one large bed and two small cots to sleep up to four people.

This is the perfect size for families with one or two children, as the kids can sleep in the cots, and the parents can sleep in the larger bed.

The deck has a grill and sink on the backside of the cockpit, so you can cook without leaving the cabin.

However, the cabin still has a kitchen equipped with a stove, microwave, sink, and fridge so that you can cook inside. It also has two couches and a TV so that you can hang out inside the cabin after a long day out in the sun.

The cabin is an open floorplan style, but the steps create a bit of a barrier between where the living room and large bed are and where the two small cots are.

The bed is out in the open, though, so it does not offer as much privacy as a cabin with a separate bedroom or a privacy barrier.

  • Grill and sink outside near the cockpit so you can cook and entertain on the deck
  • Cozy, compact design perfect for small families or couples
  • The kitchen comes equipped with all of the essentials, including a stove, fridge, microwave, sink, and storage space
  • There are two small cots in addition to the bed for extra sleeping space, allowing this cabin to sleep up to six people comfortably

  • The boat and cabin are both on the smaller side

7. Aspen 32 C100 Escape Power Cat Cabin Cruiser

Aspen 32 C100 Escape Power Cat Cabin Cruiser

The 32 C100 Escape Power Cat cabin cruiser by Aspen is unique from other cabin cruisers because of its asymmetrical hulls.

One of the hulls is 35% wider than the other, which may seem strange, but because of the type of engine this cruiser has, the asymmetry of the hulls helps the boat run in a straight line when you take your hands off the wheel.

The compensation for engine torque that the asymmetrical hulls create gives you a smooth, even cruising experience, allowing you to cruise at just under thirty miles per hour.

While this may not be the fastest boat out there, it moves at a pretty decent speed, considering its size.

The unique design of the hulls isn’t the only thing that makes this cabin cruiser great, though. This boat has a spacious cockpit that is perfect for entertaining a group of guests, hanging out with your family, or fishing.

This cockpit has not one but two refrigerators and a sink, so you can stay hydrated while you’re out in the sun all day, mix up a drink for your guests, and even store your catch of the day all right there in the cockpit.

The inside of this boat is just as spacious and full of excellent amenities as the outside.

This boat’s cabin can sleep up to six people. Its private bedroom has a king bed, a dinette that converts into a queen bed, and space for a single bed in the smaller hull section.

This means you can host guests overnight or have room for the whole family to sleep comfortably.

The kitchen inside the cabin has all the essentials you need to cook various meals, including a stove, oven, sink, fridge, and microwave.

  • Asymmetrical hulls compensate for engine torque, creating a smooth, straight cruising experience when you take your hands off of the wheel
  • The cockpit is huge, making it ideal for entertaining large groups of people or fishing
  • The cockpit has two refrigerators so that you can store a variety of drinks, snacks, and fish you may catch if you’re fishing
  • The cabin has enough beds to sleep up to six people
  • The kitchen inside the cabin is fully equipped with all of the essentials, including an oven
  • Premium sound deadening creates low sound and vibration levels
  • The highest speed that this boat can cruise at is just under thirty miles per hour, which isn’t very fast
  • Only available in white

This area is bright and cozy thanks to natural light, gorgeous built-in lighting, and fresh neutral hues.

Thanks to plenty of storage choices, you’ll have no trouble making this location your refuge and a wonderful retreat onboard your new 39 Express Coupe.

  • A beautiful escape, the head aboard the 39 Express Coupe is both stylish and well laid out. You’ll find everything you need in this easy-to-access space
  • Storage, space, and a bow ladder make the aft deck of the 39 Express Coupe great for relaxing or a day of watersports
  • Stretch out in luxury with the bow lounge aboard the 39 Express Coupe
  • The 10′ walk around and self-draining steps offer safe and convenient entry from the cockpit to the bow
  • Dynamic Running Surface system creates low sound and vibration levels, as well as automatic leveling planes for a smoother, more even cruise
  • In our humble opinion, None

9. Back Cove Yachts 372 Cabin Cruiser

Back Cove Yachts 372 Cabin Cruiser

The Back Cove 372 has been updated. The Back Cove 37 was introduced in 2009 and has since run for over thirteen years, producing more than 200 hulls.

When the production molds for the Back Cove 37 eventually fell out in 2020 due to boatbuilding wear and strain, the Back Cove Design team jumped at the chance to rethink the 37, considering nearly a decade of owner input and new design developments.

The outcome was a boat with many new features, which is how it got its name: the freshly rebuilt Back Cove 372.

The Back Cove 372 is packed with new features that cater to today’s sailing and boating lifestyles while maintaining the classic character and heart of a tried-and-true winner.

The following are some of the highlights:

A lighter boat with longer run time on the bow and optional stern thrusters thanks to a more efficient 24V DC electrical system with reduced copper weight.

A Cummins QSC 8.3 600hp diesel engine with a 7-inch display comes standard, and a Volvo Penta D8 diesel engine with a 7-inch Garmin display is an option.

Since 2009, more than 95 percent of Back Cove 37 owners have chosen a larger-than-standard engine, indicating that this change is a direct outcome of owner desire.

Thanks to a black windscreen lining and an upholstered helm pod, glare is reduced at the helm. The helm pod has also been upgraded with new materials for enhanced durability, stain resistance, and more room for navigation devices.

Fixed-glazed pilothouse windows replace sliding windows, improve sightlines, and are complimented with a center-opening windshield with better operation thanks to opening appliances.

To the starboard, there is a new aft-facing cockpit seat with a folding armrest and drink storage, as well as a new salon door to port with a bi-fold glass starboard (above the aft-facing seat).

There is a new shower cubicle, a rebuilt head, an extended medicine cabinet, a sizeable over-sink mirror, and a redesigned medicine cabinet.

  • The cabin has enough beds to sleep up to six people, as well as two separate bedrooms for added privacy
  • The kitchen is fully equipped with all the essentials, including a stove, fridge, sink, microwave, dishwasher, and storage
  • There is a washing machine on board

10. Sabre 38 Salon Express Cabin Cruiser

Sabre 38 Salon Express Cabin Cruiser

The Sabre 38 Salon Express cabin cruiser has a sensible and nautical design that you will want to show off to your friends and family.

It combines classic, traditional craftsmanship with new, state-of-the-art technology, creating a unique boat perfect for entertaining guests and relaxing with the family.

The cockpit comfortably seats four to five people and has a polished cherry wood table that can be slid out of the way when not in use to give more room.

You’ll find a U-shaped seating arrangement and another cherry wood table inside the salon. You’ll find yourself inside the cabin just three steps down from that. This is where the kitchen and the master bedroom are located.

The kitchen has a stove, fridge, microwave, sink, and ample storage, allowing you to cook various meals.

Since it is a few steps down from the salon, it is separate from the common area but still close enough and open enough that you can talk and interact with guests in the salon while cooking in the kitchen.

The bedroom contains one queen-sized bed that can sleep up to two adults or two adults and one child. It also has a door that you can shut if you’d like for added privacy.

This boat is equipped with smaller engines , which allow it to reach higher speeds by using less horsepower, adding to the efficiency and performance of the boat.

The IPS pod drives and joystick control also make maneuvering and controlling this boat much smoother and more accessible, even in shallower water or close quarters.

This is an excellent boat for a couple or small family due to how sensible its design is and how easy it is to operate and maneuver.

  • The layout of the boat keeps each area separate from the other while remaining open enough to interact with people in different areas of the boat
  • The kitchen is fully equipped with all of the essentials, including a stove, fridge, microwave, sink, and storage
  • The bedroom has a closable door for added privacy
  • Smaller engines are more efficient and allow for the boat to go faster with less horsepower

If you’re looking for a large cabin cruiser that makes the ultimate dayboat, the Tiara 43 LE must be on your radar. With some unique features that make the deck an inviting hangout for up to 8, this boat will surely wow you the first time you step onboard.

What sets the Tiara apart from other boats on the list? This is a performance boat, built to look fast and go fast. As a result, it has a little less living space than other boats of similar (or even shorter) lengths.

But where space is smaller, comfort and quality make up for it.

Tiara maximizes a streamlined cockpit very nicely with swiveling chairs and, most noticeably, a folding freeboard that seems inspired by tiny apartment architecture.

Let’s dive in and look at what makes the 43 LE unique among cabin cruisers and small motor yachts.

Tiara 43 LE — The Ultimate Dayboat Meets the Luxurious Overnighting Cabin Cruiser

Introduced in 2020, the Tiara 43 LE was the first boat of the company’s new cabin cruiser series. One look at the boat tells you a lot about it—yes, it’s as fast as it looks. Performance is a primal part of the boat’s design, and most of the features are aimed at folks who want to spend a few hours zooming around on the water then head back for dinner at the marina.

The masterful part of the Tiara LE lineup is pretty evident once you step aboard. Everything about this boat is centered in the spacious cockpit, where clever features make it stand out.

The first unique thing is what Tiara refers to as the terrace. The entire port side of the boat, from just above the waterline to the gunwale, swings outward to make a spacious swim platform .

In some ways, switching to outboard power replaces what is lost. Where sterndrives may have had a beautiful platform to aft, it’s now just moved to the side. But the platform also makes boarding easier in some docking situations and dramatically opens up the cockpit floor space. Nobody feels like they’re in the way on the Tiara 43 LE.

The next notable feature is the large center console with seating, which rotates into three locking positions . On one side, there are two seats with retractable leg rests. A polished teak pedestal table can be mounted between the two seats for cocktail hour and dining. Behind the seats, you’ll find a covered electric grill . Next is a large storage compartment big enough for your lines and fenders, plus bigger items like inflatable paddle boards.

This big console swings into three positions. The seats can face forward, aft, or at an angle facing the side terrace. With that angle set, the cockpit is wide open for moving around, getting in and out of the water, and just generally hanging out.

tiara-43le-terrace-lounge

Looking forward, two large bench seats face aft, making the entire space the perfect place to enjoy sundowners with friends, new and old. One could imagine this large and adaptable space will make the yacht popular with all sorts of water activities, from some fishing to sunning and even long-distance cruising.

The pilothouse area can be entirely enclosed thanks to a clever retractable door system. The door is made of high-quality, ultra-clear vinyl but is mounted in a sliding frame. No snaps or webbing straps here—the pilothouse can be closed off for all weather in a few seconds. Rain, heat, or cold can’t change this boat’s course.

tiara-43le-exterior-pilothouse

Inside the air-conditioned and heated pilot house, you’ll find more adaptable seating that adds even more versatility to the design. Both helm and navigator bench seats rotate to face aft to keep the captain and admiral in the social action. The helm seat includes a flip-up bolster for driving while standing up.

If those warm summer breezes have you wanting some fresh air, both side windows of the pilothouse open wide. This lets in some air and facilitates communication between the operator and deck crew when anchoring or docking. There are three overhead portlights, the center of which opens for even greater ventilation.

The galley is extremely small , and there are no cooking appliances beyond the electric grill mounted in the cockpit and a convection microwave oven mounted down below. It’s between the forward helm seats and the rear-facing benches. It’s neatly tucked into two opposing countertops on each side of the boat, so it doesn’t impede traffic flow.

To port, a small stainless sink with a folding faucet hides below the countertop. To starboard, a countertop lies above a storage drawer. Two refrigerator drawers lie on each side of the boat. You can upgrade the starboard one to be a freezer.

You’ll find a flip-down television above the galley and behind the operator’s seat. It’s handy for watching while underway or at anchor, but its location makes viewing only possible from the two aft seats and only then if they’re facing forward.

For crew members who want to spend a little more time in the sun, the forward deck of the boat is equipped with twin sun pads . The backs flip up into chaise lounges. Stainless handrails make the trip forward around the pilothouse easy. But what if the sun is getting a little too much? The aft cockpit features a retractable sunshade. Just push a button and cool off a bit.

Overnighting or Weekending Amenities

Out on deck, the boat is an impressive dayboat. Everything is centered around the incredible space, perfect for socializing and enjoying your time on the water. But a boat like this shouldn’t be limited to a few hours out and back again. Tiara knows this and has packed a beautiful cabin into the 43 LE. At first glance, it is warm and inviting.

Down below, you’ll find a large, queen-sized pedestal bed forward . Flanked by large hull windows and a beautiful custom headboard, the bed is large, welcoming, and easy to enter, with plenty of space on each side. The light-filled cabin is beautifully appointed, making a welcome respite from the sun and waves whether you want a quick snooze or a nice long recovery after a day at sea.

tiara-43le-interior-stateroom

Midship on the starboard side, you’ll find a large, well-appointed head with a separate shower stall. A large hull window with an opening port provides lots of light and some ventilation.

tiara-43le-interior-head

There is also a large midship cabin on the 43 LE. The double bunk lies athwartship, under the cockpit. Entry is gained on the port side, with standing headroom for changing. A nice long setee lies to port opposite the bunk, and another large hull window keeps the area feeling open and spacious.

The cabin on the 43 LE is not where you’ll spend a lot of time. This isn’t designed to be a live-aboard cruiser. It is, however, great for a weekend getaway for up to two couples–but no more– who will spend plenty of time off the boat.

What’s missing? Imagine cooking a full meal for four and sitting and eating it aboard. The grill is workable but not impressive in its size and the microwave mounted in the bedroom is an afterthought. The prep space is small, and, worst of all, there needs to be a dinette. There’s only a small side table for the aft outdoor seats.

The missing dinette is no small problem since many now use these spaces to knock out a few emails and check in with the office via web conference. So while the boat has plenty of room for your stuff, staying on board for a long trip will be an exercise in minimalism.

Of course, what it lacks in the galley and dining space probably doesn’t bother you if you’re heading out to the local dock-and-dine and will be back home before dark.

Options and Layout — A Small Motor Yacht for Everyone

Tiara has loaded the 43 LE with all the options you could ask for from a dayboat. The boat broaches into the small yacht category and continues to exceed your expectations everywhere you look.

One of the secrets of the 43 LE is its incredible engineering space below the cockpit deck . Down below, you’ll find a 7.5 kWh diesel generator , enough to power the heating and air conditioning throughout the boat. There are also built-in stringers to support the optional Seakeeper SK6 gyro stabilizer , which makes rough passages feel smooth as a mountain lake.

Details are built into every corner of this boat. The engineering space makes everything easy to work on, from cleaning strainers to changing filters. The space is impressive and functional, mostly thanks to the outboard engines that free up some real estate down below.

On deck, a panel hides the twin 50-amp shore power cords in the starboard side of the cockpit. Included are electric cord retractors to keep everything out of your way. Fresh and raw washdown connectors are also included there, plus there’s another set in the anchor locker.

Speaking of the anchor locker, everything is neatly stored below decks with the anchor hawsepipe coming out of the stem. Remote controls for the electric windlass are up front and at the helm.

In terms of layout, the boat only comes one way. It would be nice to see Tiara offer up some choice here, perhaps replacing the aft rotating lounger with a more traditional U-shaped settee and dinette table. But that’s why they have the 43 LS.

Performance and Driving Experience

Don’t let the 43 LE’s size fool you. While the lounging and relaxing amenities are plentiful, it’s also fast, powerful, and fun to drive .

First, the power options. Currently, the 43 LE is specced out with the latest Mercury Verado V12, 600-horsepower outboard motors . The engine package includes digital throttles and shifters, an integrated autopilot, an active trim system, and hydraulic power steering. Previous power packages included triple 450s from either Yamaha or Mercury and offered similar performance.

All packages include a joystick piloting control and a bow thruster for easy docking. The helm seat has extraordinary 360-degree visibility through the tempered glass windshield and pilothouse side windows. The pronounced eyebrow keeps glare down and improves visibility.

The operator’s station also includes twin 16-inch touchscreens from Garmin . Engine monitoring is accomplished with a Mercury Vessel View seven-inch touchscreen mounted overhead. And there are no fewer than four cupholders at your fingertips when sitting at the helm.

tiara-43le-helm

The navigator’s side also has room for a large Garmin touchscreen, with controls all of the boat’s systems. There are also controls for the SeaKeeper gyro system and Fusion radio. A small glove box has USB charging ports for your electronics.

Last but not least is the boat’s performance. It’s built to move. Fast . Given the size of the boat and the amount of comfortable space on board, you’ll be surprised at just how quickly she gets up and goes. The top speed is almost 55 miles per hour, with an economical cruise of 43 mph . She got up to 30 miles per hour in only 11 seconds in test conditions. Not a bad hole shot for a boat this big.

Driving the 43 LE is comfortable and exhilarating, whether cruising the harbor or heading off for a longer trip.

Price/Quality

Tiara has a reputation for building luxury boats of outstanding quality. The 43 LE is no exception. The layout features are plentiful, and the fit and finish are uncompromising. The appointments are luxurious, from the beautiful upholstery to the glossy teak and beechwood used throughout.

Pricing data for the Tiara is a bit hard to come by. Most listings on the used market hover just under the $1 million mark, with most 2021 and 2022 models priced around $950,000. It’s worth noting that this model was introduced in 2020, and there just aren’t that many out there yet.

Contact your local Tiara representative for current base pricing.

Do We Recommend the Tiara 43 LE?

The Tiara 43 LE blends luxury styling, speed, performance, and dayboat comfort into a well-built, fun-to-use package. You can imagine setting out for a day on the water with friends here, socializing, fishing, or just cruising the coast. The boat is big enough to extend your travels and make overnight trips, but the action is centered on deck.

If you want to stay on board longer, you might want to look into a Downeast-style cabin cruiser like the Grand Banks Eastbay 44 or the Jeanneau NC1095 Fly fast trawler. While these boats lack the performance of the Tiara, they feature more functional galleys and dining areas and more day-to-day living space. Alternatively, you could have it all by stepping up to the Tiara 48LE .

The 43 LE fits a niche boater who wants little from their cabin space but maximum performance and wonderful outside areas. It’s an all-weather boat with an enclosed pilothouse that will keep you cool or warm, but if you’re looking for long trips or exploring remote waters, we think a proper galley and a place to eat dinner or work on a laptop are must-have items.

We love the Tiara for its appealing looks, outstanding performance, and comfortable dayboat layout. It’s a great boat for folks who seldom overnight on their boats but want the aesthetics, entertaining space, and speed that only the Tiara offers.
