Did you know.
Up until the 20th Century, the River Thames was an important part of the economic lifeblood of the city. Barges would travel up the river daily, carrying important supplies such as timber, wool, foodstuffs and livestock. This includes the stone used to rebuild St Paul’s Cathedral after the 1666 Great Fire of London, which was transported by boat along the River Thames from the Cotswolds to London. Following the growth of road transport in the 20th Century, the River Thames became less economically important.
Nowaday’s if you look out at the river, you’ll spot our hop on hop off cruises showing-off this wonderful city to tourists from all over the world!

Ever wanted to paddle on the Thames? This river-side venture has canoes and kayaks for rent
Riverside social club is opening on saturday.
Social Sharing
A new London business wants to make it easier for people to enjoy the Thames River by offering canoe and kayak rentals at an easy-to-access boat launch spot.
Riverside Social Club is the brainchild of Mat Rivest and Anis Omar, who are launching the river-side venture on Saturday.
"We have a major river that goes directly through this city that is underused," said Rivest. "We wanted to open something up that benefits the community and gives people the opportunity to come out and experience the outdoors," said Rivest. "You can experience nature here, not far from your front door."
The space, located near the southeast intersection of Riverside Drive and Wonderland Road, is the first canoe and kayak rental service along the Thames.
"If you want to go kayaking in the community right now, you basically have to own a kayak or know a friend who will lend you their kayak," said Omar. "We wanted to fill that void."
Increasing river accessibility
Previously, Londoners could only rent boats at the Fanshawe Conservation Area and were limited to staying in that reservoir. People with their own boats could transport them to one of the city's launch points along the Thames, which are currently undergoing upgrades as part of the city's Paddling Plan.
"[Riverside Social Club] is an exciting development and something we definitely anticipated through this process," said Linda McDougall, a landscape architect working on the Paddling Plan. "When there are canoe and kayak rentals available on the river, those who choose active mobility or transit will have more options available to them."
- London's paddling plan is one step closer for easier access to the Thames River
The seven-person team at Riverside all come from different fields of work. With no business background, Omar says this project is a new adventure for everyone involved.
He tried paddling for the first time two years ago and said he "fell in love" with the activity.
"There's nothing like floating down the river, relaxing, seeing deer and fish hop out, and watching people using the bike paths," said Omar. "It's such a great feeling that a lot of people have not really experienced, so we encourage everyone to come out paddling."
People can book boats for up to three hours, through the company's website. Upon arrival, paddlers will bring their rented boats up to Riverside's dedicated dock, where staff can help launch the canoes and kayaks into the river.
The company offers sit-on-top kayaks, which Rivest said are beginner-friendly as they are less likely to capsize. They also provide life jackets equipped with whistles and all boats have a location tracker.
If paddlers do not return at the end of their time slot, staff will check the boat's location before going out on a kayak to make sure paddlers are safe, said Omar. If staff find a boat without a person, they will call London police immediately.
A multi-functional venue
Prime canoeing and kayaking season is from May to mid-October, Rivest said, but the Riverside Social Club team has plans to keep their venue sustainable the rest of the year.
"Everyone has anniversaries and birthdays, and we have a great venue on the river – the views are pretty much unmatched," Omar said.
Staff are currently in the process of renovating their building, with the goal of hosting birthday parties and bridal showers by this winter.
As the company grows, Omar said he wants to partner with organizations in the city and plan events like outdoor cleanups.
"We just want to have people come out, have that human connection and do an outdoor activity that's away from the screens," he said.
Riverside Social Club is having its grand opening on Saturday starting at 10 a.m.

Police raid two Indigenous-run London pot shops
Two Indigenous-run pot shops remained closed Wednesday after provincial police raided the unsanctioned businesses one day earlier.

The crackdown by the OPP’s joint forces cannabis enforcement unit targeted Spirit River, an unlicensed cannabis dispensary in a trailer at 72 Wellington St., and the Spirit River downtown storefront at 685 Richmond St.
“This property has been closed,” read an OPP sign on the door of the Wellington Road location.

“If you have interest in the property and want to enter – you may apply to the Superior Court of Justice to get permission to enter under . . . the Cannabis Control Act, 2017. If you enter this property without judicial authorization you may be charged with break and enter (or other related charges).”
The same signs were placed on the door of the Richmond Row dispensary, but had been removed by Wednesday, said a worker at a nearby business.
Police raided the black-market business Tuesday morning and officers could be seen removing product from the store, said the woman, who didn’t want to be identified.
An OPP spokesperson declined to provide any details about the raids Wednesday, saying information about the operation would be released later this week.
The OPP-led cannabis enforcement unit is made up of officers from nearly a dozen Ontario forces, including London’s.
London police referred all inquiries to the OPP.
Spirit River Cannabis opened its Wellington Street location in a gravel lot, just north of Grand Avenue, in December 2022, without obtaining a licence from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), the province’s pot regulator.
Maurice French, owner of the store at the time, wrote city officials and police, saying he was exercising his treaty rights to open a “medicinal cannabis trading post” on traditional Chippewa Nation land.
The second Spirit River store opened last year on Richmond Row in a space previously occupied by Fire and Flower, a cannabis retail chain that filed for creditor protection in 2023.
Spirit River’s cash-only pot shops were open 24 hours a day, violating AGCO rules, and sold cannabis products not inspected by Health Canada.
London’s third Indigenous-run dispensary, Sewatohwat Cannabis at 430 Richmond St., just north of Dundas Street, wasn’t targeted in the crackdown and was open for business on Wednesday.
Illegal pot shops began popping up across Canada before recreational cannabis was legalized in October 2018, prompting police to crack down on the black-market businesses, arresting employees and seizing inventory.
The police effort to snuff out the illicit stores eventually succeeded as more legal retailers opened across Ontario and the price of legal cannabis products became more competitive with the black market.
But soon Indigenous-run dispensaries, a common sight on Indigenous territories, began opening in Southwestern Ontario towns and cities, with operators claiming cannabis laws don’t apply to them.

Boston duck boat captains rescue toddler, father from Charles River
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) — Captains of a Boston “duck boat” rescued a father and son from the Charles River after the toddler tumbled into the water followed by his father on Monday, officials said.
The Boston Duck Tours boat, which take tourists both on water and on land, was participating in quarterly safety drills when it retrieved the pair from the water. The boy was taken to a hospital as a precaution Monday morning, the Cambridge Fire Department said.
“This is crazy. This is happening while we’re doing training," Michael Rosario, one of the captains, recounted to reporters. “Now we’re doing real-life rescue.”
The boy, who’s under 2, got past safety railing and fell into the river behind the Royal Sonesta, a riverfront hotel in Cambridge, according to Massachusetts State Police. His father quickly jumped in after him.
Photos showed both of them in the water with the father clinging to a rock face with one arm while holding his son with the other.
Rosario and co-Capt. Kevin O’Neil tossed out a safety ring, maneuvered close to them and dropped a ladder. Once both were safely aboard, they motored to the dock in Cambridge where they were met by first responders.
“We were happy to be in the right place at the right time,” said Tom Vigna, director of marketing for Boston Duck Tours.
