An little known Mallorcan designer has created this wild card 108ft cruiser-racer called Win Win. Toby Hodges hears her story

Javier Jaudenes is a name you probably will not have heard of before. But, judging from these explosive pictures of his first superyacht design, Win Win we will be seeing more from this Mallorcan designer.

C3PO

The 108ft Baltic Win Win is an uncompromising, dual-purpose cruiser-racer, a lightweight carbon machine representing the latest in an increasing trend of 100-115ft performance superyachts designed for race-hungry owners who also want to cruise with a minimum of professional crew.

The owner of Win Win is an experienced long-distance sailor who owned the 95ft Jongert, Scorpione dei Mare . The story goes that on the morning of the opening race of the Superyacht Cup Palma four years ago, Scorpione ’s mainsail trimmer dropped out. The bowman contacted Palma resident Javier Jaudenes, who jumped in a RIB and met the yacht on the startline. They went on to win the regatta.

Jaudenes had studied naval architecture in Southampton and worked for Barracuda Yacht Design. After helping to race and optimise Scorpione , Jaudenes showed the owner some of his drawings. The result is this feisty, contemporary, lightweight cruiser-racer. “He was a wild card decision,” says WinWin ’s captain, Clive Walker, “but having sailed with Javier, we had the confidence in him.”

A sleek contemporary design

Latest trends

Jaudenes himself is happy with the yacht: “She feels great: light, powerful and balanced – a boat that wants to go fast all the time.” In trials she made 18.7 knots under gennaker, and 12 knots easily upwind.

Jaudenes was influenced by the latest trends in the racing scene for wide and powerful hull shapes. “In my experience superyachts tend to get overpowered very soon,” he says. So he drew a shape that was both very powerful when reaching and that wouldn’t need to be reefed early when cruising with limited crew.

Specifications

LOA 33.04m/108ft 5in

LWL 30.68m/100ft 8in

Beam 7.58m/24ft 10in

Draught 3.50-5.50m/11ft 6in-18ft 1in

Displacement 77,400kg/170,636lb

The Loro Piana in the British Virgin Islands and the St Barths Bucket will be WinWin ’s first competitive outings. And competition in this sector is hot. But she’s also intended to cruise in luxury and, for this, insulation was a key focus – carbon yachts are notoriously loud places below.

“The noise levels were the lowest we had specified in a contract before,” says Baltic’s marketing director Kenneth Nyfelt. Natural cork-cored sandwich panels were used for both non-structural and interior panels to achieve better acoustic damping.

The interior uses washed and limed oak veneers

“It was striking just how quiet the boat was below with, at times, 25 knots true on deck and boat speeds hitting the high teens,” maintains Baltic’s CEO Henry Hawkins. “Our efforts to keep this boat light and yet quiet have clearly worked.” The weight-saving target was strict and so this 108-footer weighs just 47 tonnes without her keel.

WinWin has a similar retractable propulsion system to the one developed for the 147ft Visione . Nyfelt feels it is worth the small extra weight as the prop is fixed and optimised for both efficiency and noise under engine.

The benefits of a clean hull profile can be felt on the wheel when sailing. “She doesn’t have any drag,” says Jaudenes, “she feels like a dinghy, with a very clean flow on the rudder and a clean stern wake.”

Hawkins adds: “The performance potential is clear and yet notably the creature comforts have not been set aside in order to achieve this.” UK firm Design Unlimited has styled the light (in both senses) and minimalist interior, the forward section of which is devoted to one vast master suite.

Jaudenes is also commended for the comfort of the crew area he designed at the widest point aft. “He created a place we are all happy to be,” says Walker.

With the cruising goals achieved and the regatta performance looking promising, expect to hear more of WinWin , and particularly the name of Javier Jaudenes.

WINWIN // BALTIC YACHTS

Win-win situation - speed, style, cruising comfort, and modern technology - baltic 108, christened sailing yacht winwin..

WINWIN is a high-tech cruiser/racer constructed in prepreg carbon composite designed by Javier Jaudenes . The yacht was developed for cruising with a lot of comforts and a small crew but also for racing on regattas.

WINWIN has a draft of 5.50 meters but thanks to a lifting keel she can also visit shallow waters. Another underwater feature is a retractable propulsion system to reduce water resistance. A refinement of the system first used on the Baltic 147, Visione, the fixed propeller has been optimized, resulting in lower fuel consumption and a quieter engine, while also proving more effective during reversing maneuvers.

The yacht has been developed to meet the requirements of the DNV Hull structure verification 1A1 classification.

The sleek superstructure encapsulates a long deck saloon, seamlessly connected to a single-level cockpit via the push button retractable glass bulkhead. This bulkhead drops down discreetly, ensuring an uninterrupted transition between interior and exterior. The spacious cockpit features a sunbathing platform on either side and provides an excellent area for fast, efficient maneuvers while racing, and a large enough space for enjoying al fresco dining. The aft crew entrance ensures quietness and owner’s privacy.

Interior of WINWIN

The modern and functional interior comes from the boards of Design Unlimited . and offers six cabins. The forward section is mostly taken up by an exceptionally generous master suite comprising of a large, full-width cabin with en-suite shower room, and a study and owners’ lounge stretching down the port side complete with desk, three-sided settee and ample storage. Facing that across the centerline is a Pullman cabin for the owners to use when passage making, demonstrating that this yacht is intended for serious sailing.

WinWin Yacht Interior

The deck saloon is a well-proportioned seating and entertaining area with plenty of light, not least as a result of the retracting glass bulkhead that leads out to the cockpit center aft section of the boat includes two twin guest cabins each with en-suite, plus a fully-equipped galley, crew mess with navigation station, and two Pullman cabins providing high-quality accommodation for up to four crew. In keeping with the brief for a light, minimalist finish, the interior uses washed and limed oak veneers for the floors and interior joinery. The white high-gloss painted lacquered overheads aid in reflecting light throughout. Concealed light panels help maintain the atmosphere of clean simplicity.

The magazines Superyacht News and The Superyacht Owner sat down with the owner Kim Schindelhauer and the designer for an interview .

“To build this boat, I knew I needed team players, not superstars[…]”

What’s in a Name? Baltic Yachts Superyacht WinWin

Superyacht WinWin

Superior in performance, exceptional in design, here is a case where it is appropriate to be repetitive. The exquisite Baltic Yachts WinWin is a functional masterpiece that proves her excellence as both a racing yacht, as well as a cruising yacht. She wins in either light.

Embracing the yard's founding philosophies of faster, lighter, and stronger, while delivering on every task as requested, WinWin is the consummate hybrid of adrenaline and leisure. Delivered in 2014, the 33 m/108 ft WinWin raised eyebrows and dropped jaws wherever she sailed, capturing the coveted Showboats Exterior Design & Styling Award, alongside the Interior Design Award, for the 30-39.99 m group. Classically clean, with an innovative employ of today's technology, WinWin is a mix of both racing and cruising technologies, making no compromises on either side of the fence.

A fresh sweep of a yacht, the remarkable exterior of WinWin is a chic line of form and function displaying graceful architecture designed by Mallorcan Javier Jaudenes. Versatile as a high-tech racing yacht, WinWin performed well in Les Gazelles des Mers class at the St. Barth Bucket Regatta this past March. Intending to exceed her history, she will race at the Loro Piana in Portofino this May, going up against such formidable challengers as the Vitters Yacht Marie, the Perini Navi Clan VIII, and dual Wally Yachts Saudade and Nahita.

Her speed is, in part, attributable to her lightweight construction. A pre-preg carbon sandwich laminate, with Corecell and Nomex at the heart, WinWin's hull and deck are both beautiful and easy on the scales. A retractable propulsion system eliminates prop drag under sail, improving speed and efficiency. A lifting keel allows her entry into the privacy of shallower waters many others dare not explore.

Strong and silent, WinWin is configured employing 3D noise prediction modeling to ensure every sound is hushed with only as much material as necessary, and no more. Cushioned with natural, cork-cored sandwich panels, non-structural and interior divisions exhibit excellent acoustic damping. Carbon foam and rubber cork cores in floor panels, engineered in tandem with the brilliance of the team at Van Cappellen Consultancy, further contain stray decibels. With light displacement of 77,400 kg, 30,600 kg of that being ballast, WinWin's weight advantage is achieved without compromising on design, noise, or space.

Mixing well with the maxis sailing fully-crewed, WinWin has also proven she sails well at leisure with a small crew, offering posh comforts and livable quarters. Elegant interiors by Mark Tucker's Design Unlimited team show skill in creating spaces that perform well, whether under the pressure of a racing environment, or that of an important social event. Together, these remarkable talents created a most inviting set of on board quarters that are a haven for the body as well as the soul.

On deck, cushy sun platforms, port and starboard, serve as blissful al fresco dining space, transforming to accommodate a full racing crew with room to get the task done well during regatta season. A sleek glass bulkhead between the saloon and deck effortlessly drops with tap of a button, enjoining the exceptional out of doors space with the extended saloon interior, a few steps below. The effect is one of spacious luxury and limitless enjoyment.

St. Pete To Shine Again

  • By Dave Reed
  • February 14, 2024

2022 Star Class Vintage Gold Cup

The St. Petersburg Yacht Club and the western shore of Florida’s Tampa Bay will be the epicenter of sailboat racing this weekend when more than 240 teams across 13 one-design classes and five handicap-racing fleets get races started for the first event of the national Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series in St. Petersburg . Now well into its third decade, the regatta will also mark 10 years with its title sponsor.

The Sunshine City’s motto is that St. Pete is “Always in Season,” and that is certainly the enticement for many teams traveling in from colder climes with the promise of warm breezes, stiff competition and a nightlife that’s never been more vibrant.

One such northerner is David Mierzwa, of Lake Placid, New York, who on Tuesday was behind the wheel and racing to get south of a big storm burying the mid-Atlantic and Northeast in snow and ice. Behind him was bitter cold, but ahead of him was warmth and the anticipation of his first Melges 24 Midwinter Championship at the regatta.

As a newbie to the demanding Melges 24, Mierzwa says his primary goal is to “stay out of everybody’s way,” but ultimately, he and his teammates are on a mission to learn the nuances of this high-performance keelboat from his peers.

“We’re going so we can hunt for tips, tricks and whatever makes us better,” Mierzwa says. “It’s about having the opportunity to do an event of this caliber with likeminded people, because while sailing is the goal, being surrounded by others that do the same sport is sometimes better than the sport itself.”

As the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta in St. Petersburg will be his team’s first major event, he recognizes they don’t have a high enough racing pedigree to vie for the Midwinter Championship title—yet. “The only way we can get to that point is to go out there and race,” he says.

And race they will, from early Friday morning through late Sunday, alongside several other one-design classes that are the regulars of this February classic, including the S2 7.9s and the Hobie 33s , both of which will also be vying for their midwinter championship titles.

2022 Star Class Vintage Gold Cup

The S2s have the returning champions of Tom and Mary Bryant’s “Team Matros” from Holland, Michigan, which won seven of eight races in 2023 to earn their berth at the Helly Hansen Sailing World Caribbean Championship last October. At each of the series’ five events one team is selected to compete in the British Virgin Islands for the overall season title.

The Hobie 33s also have their champions returning to defend— Craig and Deborah Wilusz’s “Hoof Hearted”—but this year there’s a new and unknown challenger from Waxhaw, North Carolina, and it’s a boat with a nefarious name: “Bad Bunny.” Its new owner, Sean Rhone, says he’s looking forward to meeting and racing with other Hobie 33 owners for the first time and “taking a peek under their hoods.”

Rhone has been primarily racing his Hobie 33 in singlehanded events and low-key races on North Carolina’s Lake Norman, and like Mierzwa, he’s not sure how well he’ll fare, especially with a five-person team that’s been assembled by way of social media message boards, and whom he’s never met.

“It’s cold in Charlotte,” Rhone says, “and I’m getting tired of the cold weather, so when I saw that the fleet was having its midwinters in St. Petersburg, I thought it would be nice to go and race against some other Hobie 33s for once.”

Contender

Mierzwa and Rhone may pass each other on an interstate somewhere on the way to St. Pete, along with a sizable Canadian contingent of Contender dinghy sailors making their annual pilgrimage from across the northern border. The 16-foot Contender, which its loyalists claim to be “The Sexiest Singlehander in the World ” was introduced in 1969 and continues to be popular internationally, as well as in Tampa thanks to local sailmaker Ethan Bixby. Bixby, a champion of many classes, continues to rally the troops to the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta and the fleet has doubled for this year’s gathering. Bixby, who won all races last year, will of course be among the 11 trapezing sailors.

Sharing the same racecourse will be eight teams racing the doublehanded Windmill class, which is new to the regatta lineup, but another cult classic sparked in the 1950s. Class measurer Pat Huntley, of Erie, Pennsylvania, is now a decade into Windmill racing, and says he’s eager to enjoy some fast sailing in St. Pete and good times with his fellow Windmillers. “It’s such a fun and cool group,” Huntley says. “And the Windmill is such a bad-ass skinny and fast boat. It can handle the chop easily and is really fast.”

Five teams racing in the 20-foot Flying Dutchman class (first built in 1951) will hail from California to Tennessee and hosted by local FD ace, Lin Robson, the 2023 class winner. The doublehanded bonanza, however, will be the Melges 15 class, which will feature an impressive 31 teams, nearly double from 2023. The new one-design class has exploded in popularity across the country since its introduction three years ago, and midwinter regattas elsewhere in Florida have maxed out at nearly 100 boats.

Melges 15 class

Among the Melges 15 ranks in St. Petersburg will be New York’s Iris Vogel, who has traditionally raced the regatta with her larger one-design keelboats over the years (a Soverel 33 and a J/88, both named “Deviation”). Vogel is now enjoying the challenge of big-fleet racing and exhilarating downwind sailing.

Racing with her partner, Tim Longo, Vogel helms and Longo handles the front of the boat, and over the past year they’ve been working their way up the scoreboard, but have a long way to go to the top. “This is a totally new thing to sail in such a big fleet,” Vogel says. “J/88 events typically get a dozen boats at best, and the racing is much slower paced. The tactics are completely different and boats are fast downwind so it’s a ton of fun, but we are still learning a different style of racing. Having the smaller fleet [at the Helly Hansen Regatta] will give us a chance to work on our boatspeed.”

While the out-of-town armada is significant, local sailors look forward to the regatta every year, especially Tampa Bay’s PHRF sailors who’ve made the event a key fixture in their Suncoast Boat of the Year Series. For these fleets, which now comprise the regatta’s largest group with 38 entries across four divisions (Spinnaker, Non-Spinnaker, Racer-Cruiser and Cruising) organizers have added two days of long-course racing over the weekend. Depending on the wind strength and direction of the day, the race committee will plot a daylong course to test each team’s navigational and sailing skills, as well as their perseverance and desire to be first to the dock and first to the yacht club bar.

Local sailor Tim Landt, who has been an active sailor on the Tampa Bay waterfront for decades, is a registered competitor in the Cruising division in his new-to-him Nightwind 35, “Charisma.” He’s excited to see the regatta’s blossoming distance-race fleet and says the local growth and interest in racing older-generation yachts is good for the sport and for the Tampa Bay racing scene.

But it’s not all classic plastics in the distance fleet. In the Racer-Cruiser division will be the sparkling new Neo 43, owned by Ken Mungan of nearby Isles Yacht Club in Punta Gorda, Florida. Mungan purchased his sleek Italian-built 43-footer in 2022 with big plans to take on a few of the sport’s marque distance races, and local events like the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta offer he and his team an opportunity to learn the boat in a racing environment.

winwin yacht

“When I turned 40 I needed a hobby and took up sailing,” Munger says. “I’m always trying new things and got into racing 2019. I did the Melges 24 for a while, but the Neo, because it’s a shallow-draft boat, allows me to do more local long-distance racing and we’re learning a lot.”

For this weekend’s regatta, Munger has more crew lined up than there are roles on the boat, but that’s fine with him. “We’re going to be overloaded, and I am anticipating a level of skill and organization that we don’t quite have yet,” he admits. “We’ll have two coaches and a new set of racing jibs that will be used for the first time, so it will be fun, and I’m looking forward to it.”

Trimaran in St. Pete

While the long-course racers are making their way around the bay, closer to shore, will be the multihulls: the high-tech A Class Catamarans , which have two divisions (Classic and Foiling) totaling 33 competitors, and the Weta Trimarans , with a smaller contingent from years past, return with nine boats, and among them is two-time defending champion and local Pete Merrifield looking for a three-peat.

David Starck and crew

The iconic Lightning Class is one of the regatta’s largest one-design fleets, with 25 boats, five of which will be raced by members of the Starck family with a few world champions among them. Hall of Famer, Augie Diaz, of Miami, and Ched Proctor, of Southport, Connecticut, both world champions as well, always add to the high level of racing and camaradarie Lightning sailors enjoy all winter. The Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta in St. Petersburg is a key warm-up event for the Lightning class’s hotly-contested two-regatta Southern Circuit with March events in St. Pete and Miami.

J/24 fleet

Sharing one racing circle immediately off the city front will be the 29-boat J/70 fleet and a reemergent J/24 fleet, both of which will no doubt provide quality racing for both professional and amateur sailors. The same will be true for the ever-competitive ORC fleet, with 11 entries, which will be racing further south. Bill and Jackie Baxter’s J/111 “Fireball,” from Stamford, Connecticut, which has won all of its events this winter will return to defend its 2023 ORC title, which it earned with ease, winning seven of eight races.

54' Irwin 1990

A Rare GemRefreshing to find a boat that is lavishly maintainedand constantly upgraded

VIEW THE 360 DEGREE VIRTUAL TOURThe Irwin 54 is one of the most popular sailing yachts over 50' ever built. Find out why

For over 20 Years, the current owner had an open check book tocontinually upgrade and lovingly care for this amazing yacht

Over 250 Irwin 52’s and 54’s were built. First introduced in 1976, The Irwin 52 quickly became the  most  popular cruising center cockpit sailboat on the market.  In 1988, the boat evolved into the Irwin 54 with a major redesign of the hull, deck and interior. “Patience“ is one of the last Irwin 54’s and possibly the best ever built.

“Patience” was ordered new by her original owner in 1989 and commissioned in 1990. The concept was to utilize the basic clever design and create a vessel of not just outstanding beauty, but also a yacht that is flawlessly executed and engineered to a standard normally seen only in larger vessels. The spectacular result is not only a "go anywhere" yacht, but also one of absolute luxury, total privacy and short-handed style.

The second owner purchased "Patience" for a two year Caribbean cruise and then sold  her to the  current owner.Current owner has owned this boat for the past 20 years!
