Broker Remarks
Nicholson 35 for sale. Under the same ownership for 21 years and has undergone a thorough program of updating and refurbishment and her interior is fresh, bright and comfortable.
The Nicholson 35 was designed in the late 1960’s by Peter Nicholson and quickly earned a reputation as a sturdy ocean cruising yacht. For over 20 years this long fin cruiser has been crossing oceans and keeping her crews well looked after. This is a fantastic yacht to sail in big seas and high winds.
Two massive cockpit lockers mean there is ample stowage on deck for sails and kit. The decks are wide and clear so it is easy to move around the deck.
Below decks is designed for practicality rather than comfort but there is still plenty of room for six crew to sit around the table (which can be used fully or partially open). The settees make good sea berths as does the pilot bunk with its own lee board. A slide out infill extends the settee. The heads spans the width of the boat with toilet to port and sink to starboard.

Nicholson 35 review
See the Summer 2016 issue of Yachting Monthly for the full test
What’s she like to sail?
Like all long fin-keeled heavy displacement cruisers the Nicholson 35 is designed to take almost any adverse weather and sea conditions in her stride. Her overhanging, deep-vee bow section means she parts the waves resolutely, with little drama or spray, exuding only a gentle rocking motion as she goes. The very conservative sail plan of the early models versus her generous ballast ratio means she’s a very stiff yacht that only really starts to heel in a Force 5 and can keep full sail up until well over 20 knots of wind is blowing over her decks.
Her big genoa can make headsail sheeting hard work, but this is mitigated her leisurely tacking speed compared to a shorter fin keeled yacht. She makes good passage time due to her steadfast ability to drive through the rough stuff, and being so stable and sea kindly means you can live, sleep and cook aboard safely and comfortably, relaxing in the knowledge that these robust and resilient vessels have covered millions of sea miles in their lifetime.
What’s she like in port and at anchor?
Like all yachts of this era her accommodation is fairly rudimentary. Though 35ft overall, her interior is ideally suited to a couple, with occasional guests. The forecabin isn’t massive – I’m 6ft tall and in ours we used to sleep heads forward so my feet could hang over the end of the bunk through the door! The saloon is much roomier, but means you have to make up the beds every night, which is tedious long term. Later models offered a quarterberth, which, though useful on passage, nearly always gets used for stowage and you lose a deep cockpit locker.
Closing both forecabin and saloon sliding doors gives a good sized, ventilated heads compartment, which is easily fitted with a shower. Her galley is a good size too, so cooking for friends and crew presents few problems and her deep cool box is often converted to provide separate fridge and freezer compartments.
She has a roomy cockpit for living and eating al fresco, but her slightly retroussé transom can make access to the water for swimming a little awkward.
Would she suit you and your crew?
She comes with an excellent pedigree and is fondly loved by those for whom safety and comfort at sea is more important than speed and agility. That’s not to say she can’t make impressive passage times. Given enough wind she’ll still be battling to windward in sea conditions that would make many a more modern cruising yacht owner run for the nearest cover.
The original deck gear was made from top quality materials and substantially engineered, thereby making it all simple to maintain regularly. Obviously, it depends on how they’ve been worked over the years, but it’s not unusual to find them still going strong with 40 year-old winches, tracks and cars. Probably the only aspect of the boat that could put off a potential buyer is the original reverse-mount engine with its hydraulic drive system. It’s getting more difficult to gets spares for and the location of the prop, on the back of the keel, makes her very difficult to manoeuvre at close quarters, particularly when going astern.

Broker's Comments
Such a pretty classic yacht, with renowned build of seaworthiness and performance. This Nicholson 35 comes to the market having been in the family for 40+ years. Over the last few years the owner has tried to maintain her lovingly with refurbished teak, recent navigation equipment, sails etc. She does need a new owner to give her the next lease in life. Engine currently not running will need some attention

All about the $40m bayesian yacht that capsized, leaving 6 dead and 1 still missing.
The massive superyacht Bayesian that sank off the coast of Italy on Monday won numerous awards for its sleek interior design — and was sold to its original owner for nearly $40 million.
The luxury sailing ship was carrying 22 people when it capsized and sank during a fierce storm early Monday.
The bodies of five of six missing passengers, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch , 69, have been recovered. His daughter, 18-year-old Hannah, is the only one of six known killed in the tragedy yet to be found, a source close to the rescue operation told Reuters.
The ship’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, has also been confirmed dead.
Divers continued searching the wreckage of the 184-foot-long, British-flagged vessel, previously called Salute, on Wednesday after discovering four of the bodies.
When it was built in 2008, the Bayesian had the tallest aluminum mast in the world, standing at 237 feet, earning it the award for best exterior styling at the World Superyacht Awards in 2009, the Telegraph reported.
The sprawling superyacht’s interior, decorated with sleek, minimalist furnishings created by Remi Tessier, has also won numerous awards.
The ship, which accommodated 12 guests, had a master bedroom and three double and two twin bedrooms.
It also featured beige sofas, dark wood furnishings, and a teak deck equipped with a large canvas awning to keep guests cool, according to the outlet.
Some of the ship’s styling, including thin brown pillars and miniature terra cotta sculptures, was inspired by Japanese culture.
What to know after a tornado sank the yacht Bayesian off the coast of Sicily:
- A superyacht capsized off the coast of Sicily after a tornado hit the area early Monday, killing seven passengers.
- British tech tycoon Mike Lynch was identified as one of the bodies pulled from the wreckage. His teenage daughter, Hannah, was the final one to be recovered.
- Lynch — known as “Britain’s Bill Gates” — had invited guests from Clifford Chance, a legal firm that represented him, and Invoke Capital, his own company, on the voyage, according to the Telegraph .
- Security camera footage shot from 650 feet from where the Bayesian sank Monday shows it disappearing.
- A rare and unexpected “black swan” weather event may have led to the Bayesian’s speedy demise , maritime experts say.
The extravagant ship won best interior at the International Superyacht Society Awards in 2008 and was also voted one of the best large sailing yachts at the 2009 World Superyacht Awards, according to the outlet.
The yacht’s original owner, John Groenewoud, a Dutch real estate developer, reportedly bought the ship for £30 million ($39 million) when it was built. In 2014, he sold the ship with an asking price of £27 million ($35 million).

The Bayesian is currently owned by Revtom, a company that listed Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, as its legal owner.
It was named after the Bayesian statistical model that helps financial investors calculate risk — the subject of Lynch’s PhD that later helped him build his empire.
The vessel, operated by yachting company Camper & Nicholsons, had twin 965hp MTU engines, which gave it a range of 3,600 nautical miles at 13 to 15 knots (14 to 17 mph).
RSB Rigging carried out rig service works on the ship with Astilleros de Mallorca, a shipyard facility in Palma, in November 2016.
The Bayesian returned in September 2020 for scheduled service works, including having its mast removed and reinstalled.
Steve Branagh, managing director of RSB Rigging, told the Telegraph: “At this time, our deepest sympathies go out to the friends and families of all those affected by this dreadful tragedy.”
