Onboard, 13 staterooms provide rather glamorous accommodation for up to 22 guests, while other luxurious amenities include a Balinese spa, sauna, panoramic jacuzzi, gym, cinema, whisky bar and cigar room.

Fascinating History

Our girl was first built by Dutch masters in the IHC Verschure shipyard for Russian owners during the height of the Cold War. She’s seen her fair share of action as an icebreaking tugboat in the Soviet Union, but the real magic began when she was sold privately around the turn of the century. Her new owner converted her into a pleasure yacht and christened her Gian t, but she was laid up in 2005.

It was Jan Verkerk who saw her true potential as an expedition yacht — after all, she was built as a Class 1 Icebreaker , with capabilities extending fay beyond pleasure cruising. Verkerk took this opportunity to transform Giant into Legend , a world-class charter yacht running ice expeditions to both poles and outfitted with luxuries to make even her most wealthy passengers titter with excitement.

What makes Legend so good at her job? She combines all the most lavish features with state-of-the-art equipment to ensure passengers arrive safely and comfortably before setting off to see the wonders of the icy Arctic landscape. LEGEND yacht was rebuilt in 2014-15 by ICON Yacht under the management of Verkerk Yachting Projects and has been extended at the stern by 3.6m to measure 77.40m (253' 11"). The interior, piping, electronics, electrical, main engines and generators, pumps, heating and air conditioning, mechanical systems, and incinerator have been added or replaced with the highest quality equipment.

The luxury explorer yacht LEGEND also carries two large tenders as well as various other tenders for different purposes and expeditions. She has the ability to garage two snowmobiles, as well as a twin turbine helicopter on a specially designed landing platform.

The helicopter landing pad is commercially certified, and there is space for a submarine to be stored in a garage on the forward deck. Both helicopter and submarine can be chartered at an extra cost. One of a kind is a term often used when talking about superyachts but this one is different. Legend cruises a new course in yacht charter offering pure unadulterated adventure, thrills and fun with all the luxuries you would come to expect of a superyacht from world-class cuisine to a dedicated spa center. There are luxury yachts out there, and there are luxury yachts that sleep more than 12 guests. There are yachts that have commercial helipads and there are yachts that have submarines. There are yachts that go to the Arctic, there are yachts that go to Antarctica, but all of the above? There is not one other luxury ice-breaking yacht with all these capabilities and then some. Built as a fully classified Class 1 ice-breaking ship, Legend has been converted at the Icon Yachts shipyard into a superb charter yacht with the project management of Verkerk Yachting Projects. Legend is capable of carrying 26 guests in total luxury, without losing her safety and strength as an icebreaker. Alongside the completion of the technical and system upgrades of this magnificent yacht, extensive modifications to her exterior were made. The stern has been extended by 3.6 meters and is equipped with a swim platform and a swimming pool. The helicopter landing pad is commercially certified and a submarine is stored in a garage on the forward deck. The helicopter and submarine are offered for charters at an extra cost. She also features a gym, a Balinese spa with sauna, jacuzzi and beauty salon, a movie theatre and entertainment system, medical suite, swimming pool and any toy you can imagine from paddle boards to jet-skis to snow scooters. Legend's interior configuration has been designed to comfortably sleep up to 26 guests in 13 cabins, including a Master suite, two VIP suites, four double staterooms and six twin staterooms (all of them convertible to double staterooms). She is also capable of carrying up to 19 crew on board, plus an extra 10 expedition crew (doctor, ice-pilot, expedition leaders, naturalists, etc), which will ensure the most relaxed luxury yacht experience combined with the thrills of an unparalleled discovery adventure. A Fully Custom Expedition yacht build is a ground up design and specification package, which will include tank testing of hull forms, 3D modeling, etc. A Semi Custom Expedition Build includes an existing hull form and common engineering package, already being used and then customizing the house styling, layout and décor.

The 80m Explorer Yacht, unnamed, is an example of a Fully Custom Explorer Build. The vessel includes float in float out wet dock that will be able to hold a 65-70 foot sport fisherman in the stern, when the sport fish is removed the tender well becomes a deep swimming pool.  She is diesel electric with Azipod drives.   The vessel has the capability of landing two helicopters and can house both helicopters in a single hangar.  The vessel also has a large tender garage that could hold multiple smaller vessels including a RIB, flats boat, jets skis and two submarines.  The vessel has accommodations for 18 guests and crew of 36.  The vessel would be commercial fit and finish on the exterior and the interior are envisioned to be built to high end cruise ship standards.

The 75m Explorer, by Admiral Shipyards is an example of a Semi Custom Build. The yacht’s exterior design, which remains unnamed, is a display of an elegant yet robust platform with generous exterior deck spaces. The expansive aft deck is designed to accommodate an Agusta Grande helicopter, complete with a storage and refueling hangar below deck.

The interior is spread across four decks and will be finished in a timeless nautical style that is finished with contemporary elements, which will be built and installed by German interio specialists, Fitz Interior. The owner, who is expected to spend prolonged period onboard, will be treated to an exclusive main deck area covering over 300 square metres with five additional guest suites on the lower deck.

Jan developed the idea of a luxurious, well equipped expedition yacht, able to visit the cold and still undiscovered regions of the world in style like Antarctica, Greenland, the North-West Passage and Alaska, and naturally all warmer destinations. Jan bought the former Russian ice breaker Giant and within 3 years, converted her into the first ice breaking superyacht. Equipped with ice-classed hulls and transoceanic ranges, explorer yachts are designed to discover the most remote corners of the globe with ease. BOAT takes a closer look at the intrepid new fleet ahead of the 2024 Explorer Yachts Summit , which will take place on 13 November at the Yacht Club de Monaco.

The only international summit dedicated solely to the explorer yachting sector, a stellar line-up of yacht owners, captains and inspiring adventurers will take the stage at the one-day event. Tickets for the 2024 edition are now on sale.

Builder : Feadship Length : 65m Most exciting feature : a helipad

Sighted for the first time last year, Promise.D . belongs to a highly-secretive roster of projects by Dutch yard Feadship . She was photographed on transport through the Dutch canals in December 2023, revealing a sheltered foredeck typical of explorer yachts , a large helipad on her upper deck and a fold-down beach club. Exteriors are the work of Studio De Voogt , while interiors have been styled by Bannenberg & Rowell .

Builder : Damen Yachting Length : 60m Most exciting feature : an observation lounge-cum-cinema room

A "yacht for all seasons", this entry is the first 60-metre addition to Damen Yachting's "luxury expedition" range. H2 Yacht Design was enlisted for the Xplorer 60's interiors, with the British studio drawing from earlier, high-profile expedition projects Andromeda , Victorious and world's largest yacht REV Ocean . Economy of space is key when on longer voyages, and the Xplorer 60 fits the brief with an observation lounge that turns into a snug cinema room at night and a sheltered, outdoor space aft that can become a cabana lounge and bar, dive deck, wellness zone or even a ski lodge. Her exterior and engineering is owed to Azure Yacht Design .

Builder: Dunya Yachts Length: 46.7m Most exciting feature : an upper deck dedicated to the owner

As King Benji ' s owner told BOAT International : "The goal [with King Benji] was to make something that was focused on doing instead of sitting." The superyacht certainly delivers with a secret Jacuzzi underneath the bow sunpads, an inflatable climbing wall and jousting arena alongside an extensive catalogue of toys. Interiors may not have been been the owner's focus but Design Unlimited 's colourful, tropical design certainly captures guests' attention, complete with natural bamboo ceilings and wooden floors. She was a nominee at the 2024 World Superyacht Awards .

Builder: Cantiere delle Marche Length: 45m Most exciting feature : a full-beam owner's apartment

This full-custom explorer yacht was commissioned by her experienced owner in 2021. Designed by Giorgio Maria Cassetta , Project T features sleek, rigorous exterior lines that connect an almost vertical bow to the transom (and its generous beach club). The owners will have the entire forward section of the main deck to themselves, encompassing a full-beam apartment with his and hers bathrooms, a dressing room and an adjoining lounge area for "total privacy".

Builder: Cantiere delle Marche Length: 44.3m Most exciting feature : an infinity pool that converts into storage

Maverick is the inaugural yacht in the shipyard's Flexplorer 146 series. In true explorer style, her robust displacement hull and hardy Hydro Tec exterior houses a custom-built crane with a lifting capacity of 4.4 tonnes, a 22-millimetre "ice belt" above and below the waterline and a diving centre. Leisure highlights include a sauna, a gym, a 135-square-metre beach club and a large infinity pool that can be covered and used as storage for deck furniture when Maverick is underway. She was sold to an "experienced" German owner in 2020.

Builder: Bering Yachts Length: 39.5m Most exciting feature : a sauna and wellness facilities

Little is known about the B125. Currently under construction in Turkey, the explorer is said to "harness a proven platform of naval architecture and engineering" to deliver the ocean-going capacities of a much larger vessel. On board elements include a 30-square-metre beach club and the option to include a sauna and wellness facilities or a dedicated tender garage. Exterior design has been completed in-house, while interiors are by Red Yacht Design . 

Builder: Pendennis Length: 34.9m Most exciting feature : an aft deck measuring 103.5 square metres

Fox represents "the very best of British engineering and interior design" according to Falmouth-based shipyard Pendennis. The compact explorer has an open aft deck that measures 103.5 square metres and is capable of storing a pair of 7.5-metre tenders, plus the option of submersibles, Jet Skis, quad bikes and any other gadgets the owners fancy.  A DJ station, glass-walled sky lounge and a dedicated wine fridge complete the list of crowd-pleasing features. Exterior and interior design is owed to Q London.

Builder : AES Yacht Length : 34.6m Most exciting feature : a sundeck with a Jacuzzi and bar

Mereley I is one of this year's newest entries following her completion and christening in August 2024. Milan-based studio Hot Lab is the mind behind her striking exterior – complete with bright-red bootstripe – and cool, contemporary interiors, which can accommodate up to 12 guests and seven crew. Al fresco spaces abound, including a sundeck with a forward Jacuzzi and bar; an upper deck dining arrangement; a cockpit lounge space and sunpads and coffee tables on the foredeck. This explorer yacht is currently listed for sale with TWW Yachts at an asking price of €13,950,000.
