Place is absolutely gorgeous!! In love with Shelter Islamd they only trouble is you need to take a ferry or private boat here.. Other then that its amazing!!
Before departing for Shelter Island, we referenced our copy of the 2017 Register of American Yacht Clubs Reciprocity Guide, confirming that both our club and the Shelter Island Yacht Club were listed and that SIYC offered reciprocity. Upon arriving at SIYC, we inquired with the staff at the desk, one of whom we believe was the manager. This 'gentleman' representing SIYC proceeded to lie - yes... *lie* - to us, stating that our club was not listed in the book, and that we could not be granted access to his club. My husband sits on our yacht club's board of directors. He was puzzled as to how this situation could arise since he personally wrote the 2017 membership check to the Yachting Club of America. He was sure that our club was listed in the membership guide. When we returned from our trip, we again verified that Shelter Island Yacht Club indeed was listed as a reciprocal club, along with our club, in the 2017 Register. It is outrageous that our yacht club paid a $500 membership fee so that its members could enjoy reciprocal privileges, yet my husband and I were blatantly lied to and turned away. We are a couple in our 50s, highly educated, polite, and well-dressed. The manager's actions were unwarranted. We quietly walked away from SIYC, disappointed and offended by the deplorable behavior of its management and representatives.
We have sailed here for decades. Reciprocal privileges. Great showers , ice, and launch. I love this YC. Bring a collared shirt! Stand for Colors! Dog friendly. They have a nice menu. Spectacular views of the mooring field with its Herrshoff 12.5 fleet . Close to wonderful restaurants within walking distance. A Hardware store has marine supplies and a little of everything else. Ice cream, a small market and a toy store will entertain kids. Fuel, bike rentals nearby. Walk to the island ferry and head over to Greenport too. Great staff.

Reciprocal Yacht Club List
Membership Info
A reciprocal yacht club program is a partnership between two or more yacht clubs that allows members of one club to visit and use the facilities of the other club when they are traveling. This program provides a great opportunity for yacht club members to explore new destinations and meet fellow boaters while enjoying the same amenities they would have at their own club. When a yacht club joins a reciprocal program, it agrees to allow members of partner clubs to visit and use its facilities, such as the clubhouse, docks, and other amenities. In return, members of the host club can also use the facilities of the visiting club when they are traveling to that area. The Sea Cliff Yacht Club has reciprocal privilege agreements with many yacht clubs throughout Long Island Sound, the United States, Canada, and several other foreign countries. Although the extent of privileges may vary slightly, generally a Sea Cliff Yacht Club member can expect to be allowed to use all the welcoming club's available facilities and services, including short term berthing, meal and bar service, heads, and showers, etc. Some clubs charge for the first night's berthing, others do not, and it seldom matters whether you come by boat or car. It is always recommended to contact the Reciprocal Club to secure a reservation. Remember; you are expected to pay before you leave. If you would like to visit a Club not listed on our standard reciprocal list, please contact the main office at [email protected] to request that a formal letter announcing your planned visit be sent out. Many Clubs that do not normally reciprocate with Sea Cliff, will offer the use of their facilities by this method. If you are traveling abroad, it is often a friendly gesture to present a Club Burgee to the visited Club. The current list of Reciprocal Clubs is: Atlantic Highlands Yacht Club PO Box 123 Atlantic Highlands NJ 07716 908-291-1118 American Yacht Club PO Box 651 Rye NY 10580 914-967-4800 Annapolis Yacht Club 2 Compromise Street Annapolis, MD 21401 410-263-9279 VHF Channel 68 Beach Point Yacht Club Orient Point Mamaroneck NY 10543 914-698-1600 Black Rock Yacht Club 80 Grovers Avenue Bridgeport CT 06605 203-335-0587 Bronxonia Yacht Club 518 Ellsworth Avenue Bronx NY 10465 718-822-9113 Centerport Yacht Club PO Box 624 Centerport NY 11721 516-261-5440 VHF Channel 68 City Island Yacht Club 63 Pilot Street W. Where everyone gets involved: shelter island recreation dept. hosts pickup games for all ages and skills.
By Jackson Rohrer
- Share on Facebook Facebook Created with Sketch.
- Share on Twitter Twitter Created with Sketch.
Every Monday, Thursday, and Sunday, basketball players of all ages and skill levels come together for some friendly competition through the town’s Recreation Department “Pickup Basketball” at the school gym.
I dropped by last Sunday to see what the program is all about.
What stood out when first walking into the gym, are the regulars. Jimbo Theinert, a Shelter Island High School math teacher, is one of those familiar faces.
“I started coming here when I was a sophomore in high school, thanks to my teammate, Chris Evangelista,” Jimbo told me. “That was 22 years ago, and I’ve been playing here ever since. My basketball game has evolved so much over the years, and I’ve had more fun here than I did during my high school basketball seasons.”
He’s not the only one who shows up to almost every session; Corri Cass, Manny Payano, Dave Liszanckie, and George Kneeland, have all been attending for almost 30 years. Even though they know each other well, they’re always welcoming to new players, making it easy for anyone to join in.
The Town Recreation Department Director Bethany Ortmann said that the program of pickup games has always been well attended. “We will get as many as 20 people playing,” Ms. Ortmann said. “The program is offered at no cost to the community. We continue to offer the program because it’s a way for adults to improve their physical health, and we feel it can help people find community and connect with friends.”
Last Sunday’s session had 14 players, which allowed for a 4-on-4 game on one end of the court and a 3-on-3 game on the other. The age range among the players was impressive. The youngest, Harrison Weslek, is 17 years old, and a senior at Shelter Island High School. The oldest, Ron Adler, is 74 years old, almost a 60-year age gap between the players.
Each side of the court was set up to have players of similar age and skill levels facing off, keeping the games competitive, but within reach for everyone. Playing to 11 points each game, everyone had the chance to face different levels of competition and play with different people.
As the session started to slow down, everyone switched to a full court 5-on-5 game, putting players on all-new teams. The pace of play varied, depending on the game format. The 3-on-3 games were laid-back, still competitive, but with a slower pace. The 4-on-4 was more intense, with tougher defense, a faster pace, and a focus on team basketball. But the 5-on-5 game was a whole different experience — much faster, with a totally different feel as everyone adjusted to new teammates and opponents.
Overall, the sessions are very casual. Players came and went, with some attending parts of the session and others staying for the whole time. It’s definitely a program worth checking out if you’re into basketball, no matter your age or skill level. Whether it’s your first time attending, or you’ve been coming for years, the players and regulars are a crowd worth getting to know.
After the session, Rob Reilly summed it up well: “I’ve been playing in this program for about five years now, and it’s like being transported into a different time, in a good way. You get to know all the people who live here — firefighters, teachers, police officers — everyone is part of this basketball league. It’s so rare to have that level of community in today’s world. It’s truly a nice feeling living on Shelter Island, when you have programs like this and a sense of camaraderie.”
Harrison Weslek added, “It’s so nice that these guys just want to see me develop as a player and as a person. I’ve met some of the wisest people at these sessions and learned so much about basketball and about life.”
