Teaching Quadrilateral Classification

art of problem solving classifying quadrilaterals

Quadrilaterals are so tricky! Think about it … all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares? Not to mention the fact that there are three definitions of a trapezoid! What??? Memorizing definitions is not enough for kids to fully grasp the concepts. To really understand quadrilaterals, students have to explore a variety of four-sided polygons and classify them according to their attributes.

The printables and resources in  Classify It!   Exploring Quadrilaterals will make it easy to engage your students in collaborative, hands-on learning experiences to learn how to classify quadrilaterals. Here’s what’s included:

  • Quadrilateral Classification Pretest and Posttest
  • Mini lesson with practice printable for introducing quadrilateral characteristics
  • Types of Quadrilaterals mini poster, foldable and interactive notebook page
  • 12 polygon task cards with answers
  • Cooperative learning sorting activity for activating higher-level thinking and discussion
  • Classify It!  game for challenging students to apply newfound knowledge
  • Black and white versions of all student printables
  • 3 different versions based on trapezoid definitions (exclusive, inclusive, and British English)

Free Quadrilateral Classification Quiz

To find out how well your students understand quadrilateral classification, administer the free Classifying Quadrilaterals pretest . This free pretest uses the “exclusive trapezoids” definition, so keep this in mind when scoring it.

art of problem solving classifying quadrilaterals

If your students have difficulty with this concept, they would benefit from the activities in Classify It: Exploring Quadrilaterals . Start with the introductory lesson and then move quickly into the quadrilateral sorting activity. This activity will get your students talking about quadrilaterals in ways that will help them explore and master the concepts. It’s almost as if your students are teaching themselves!

Finally, teach your students to play Classify It! This game is a more challenging variation of the sorting activity that requires students to apply what they’ve learned about quadrilaterals as they compete for points. Students earn points for correct answers, but they lose points for incorrect answers which discourages guessing. After several rounds of the game, your students will be able to classify any quadrilateral, no matter how tricky!

Skeptical? Administer the Classifying Quadrilaterals posttest and compare the results to their pretest scores. You’ll be amazed at how much your students learn in just a matter of days!

What are teachers saying about Classify It: Exploring Quadrilaterals?

“I saw the greatest impact of this activity with my low group. They were able to grasp the concept of using attributes when identifying quadrilaterals. They came into the lesson with the misunderstanding that all trapezoids looked the same. By the end of the sorting activity, they were able to look at any quadrilateral and classify it without me asking about the attributes. I see this game as a great math station activity or even assessment during guided math.” ~ Jennifer Watkins, 3rd Grade
“The game was a success! My students loved it, and I heard many groans when I told them that it was time to put it away! My kids loved that the kid who got an answer wrong had to pay, as I put it! They also liked the fact that it wasn’t the same person who led every time. It was like it clicked today, especially when it came to the trapezoids. The kids were making all kinds of observations. One even noticed that the trapezoid that they weren’t used to seeing looked like half of the trapezoid that they were used to seeing. The math talk was amazing today!” ~ Sheldon Jordan
“Love this resource! I used it as a center in class, then the students made their own copies to take home and play for homework during a short week of school. I especially love how the kiddos can get instant feedback by checking their answers.” ~ Kayla C.
“My kids had a blast with this! It is perfect for small groups or partner work. I love that the kids actually can manipulate the pieces and really dive into what does and does not describe a shape. The variety of shapes really lets me know who gets it! Great product and easy prep!”

What is a quadrilateral? A quadrilateral is a figure with four sides and four angles. Some examples of quadrilaterals are parallelograms, rhombuses, trapezoids, rectangles and squares.

How to classify quadrilaterals?

Quadrilaterals are four-sided polygons, and there are different ways to classify them based on their properties. Here’s a breakdown of the main categories:

Simple Quadrilateral: This is the most basic classification and simply refers to any four-sided closed shape. It doesn’t have any specific properties regarding its sides or angles.

Parallelogram: A parallelogram has two pairs of parallel sides. Opposite sides are parallel and equal in length. Opposite angles are equal.

Rectangle: A rectangle is a special type of parallelogram. It has all four sides at right angles (90 degrees). Opposite sides are parallel and equal in length.

Square: A square is a special type of rectangle. It has all four sides equal in length and all four angles at right angles.

Rhombus: All sides are equal in length, but the angles may not be right angles.

Kite: No parallel sides, and pairs of adjacent sides are equal.

Trapezoid: There are actually two accepted definitions for trapezoids, and the slight difference can cause some confusion. Here’s a breakdown of both definitions.

Inclusive Definition: This is the more widely used definition in mathematics education. A trapezoid is a quadrilateral with at least one pair of parallel sides. Under this definition, a parallelogram (which has two pairs of parallel sides) is considered a special type of trapezoid.

Exclusive Definition: This definition is less common but still used in some contexts, particularly in older geometry texts. A trapezoid is a quadrilateral with only one pair of parallel sides. By this definition, a parallelogram would not be considered a trapezoid.

The following diagrams shows how quadrilaterals can be classified.

Know Your Quadrilaterals Song by Dave Nelson Lyrics: Are you ready to learn? Let’s learn some geometry. Remember polygons? That’s where we start, They are closed shapes. They have straight sides. The ends are together, but they don’t cross. Pay attention and you won’t get lost. Chorus Quadrilaterals, they are polygons. Quadrilaterals, have four sides. We can classify, like a family tree. They’re all related, and different, let’s see: Kites, kites, in the tree by themselves. No parallel sides, poor kites. Oh well. They have two pair on congruent sides, But they gotta’ touch for a kite to fly. The diagonals cross at ninety degrees Hey, you know Ben Franklin? He flew one of these. They sit in the tree on a lonely little stem. There are no others, quite like them. Chorus Trapezoids are easy to tell, One pair of sides that are parallel. The parallel sides, why those are the bases. In our family tree on their own oasis. Non-parallel sides, those are the legs, Holding up the base like two little pegs. Take a triangle and cut off the top, Got yourself a trapezoid. It’s not time to stop. Ready for the rest now? Let’s hear you sing along. Chorus Parallelograms have two pair of sides That are parallel, and the same size. They have a lot of properties that are unique. If you knew them all, you’d be a Geo-Freak. In the family tree, we’re at the end of the station, Three shapes to go before your vacation. The next three shapes are underneath the ‘gram, That’s what makes me a great big fan. Chorus Our last three shapes are a type of parallelogram. If you don’t learn them, you’ll fail the exam. A rhombus has four equal sides. Next to the rectangle is where it resides. A rectangles angles are all the same, Ninety degrees is the number, or Right angle by name. Put them together and say a little prayer. Say “Hey Mom, look. I made myself a square!”

  • Use the Observational checklist of students describing, testing and refining their decision tree algorithms to assess if the students have achieved the success criteria. Decision algorithms can be submitted to teacher at the end of the lesson.
  • A digital submission could be a photo of their group’s decision tree algorithm and a brief reflection summary describing how their algorithm works.
  • Differentiation: Quadrilateral properties quiz using the Quadrilaterals worksheet. This would require another 50 minutes of class time to complete.

Prerequisite student knowledge and language

Key terms for this lesson: polygon, two-dimensional, algorithm, quadrilateral, parallel, parallelogram, trapezium, rhombus, convex, non-convex.

Areas of challenge

Some students may:

  • have only encountered one orientation of a plane shape, for example, on a poster in the classroom where only regular pentagons are displayed. Provide examples of different orientations.
  • not realise that classification of polygons is inclusive, for example a square is also a rectangle.

Suggested strategies

Using games and storybooks

Collaborative learning

What you need:

Lesson plan ( Word )

Teacher's slides ( PowerPoint )

Quadrilaterals worksheet ( Word )

Rulers, coloured pencils, markers (or whiteboard markers)

A3 paper (or whiteboards)

Learning goals, learning intention.

  • We are learning to establish the properties of quadrilaterals using the side, angle and diagonal properties.
  • We will develop and refine a decision tree algorithm to classify special quadrilaterals by these properties.

Success criteria

By the end of this lesson, students can:

  • work collaboratively to develop a decision tree algorithm
  • classify special quadrilaterals by their properties
  • describe how their algorithm works.

Why are we learning about this?

Each plane shape has a precise meaning in geometry and therefore a standard definition. Knowledge of shapes and their properties leads to understanding around spatial relationships. It develops critical thinking skills, visual spatial reasoning and pattern recognition and can be applied to real-world skills like graphical skills, design and engineering. By developing an algorithm to classify shapes, students develop a foundational understanding of how machine learning can distinguish objects or images from each other.

Learning hook 10 mins

Note that, sequentially, it is suggested that the lesson: Geometric patterns is completed prior to this one, or  go to Try these triangles: Assessment tasks by AAMT Top Drawer teachers, and print and hand out the PDF for students to complete. Enable students by also providing them with the Classifying triangles information sheet .

Use the accompanying teacher’s slides to present this lesson. Edit it to fit your class. Gather your resources before the lesson starts: A3 butcher’s paper/whiteboards, markers, pencils and rulers.

I ntroduction

  • Introduce students to the lesson by explaining that they will use game design to explore the properties of quadrilaterals (slide 1).
  • Students will play a modified game of ‘Celebrity heads’ to help develop a conceptual understanding of how an algorithm works to classify quadrilaterals. They will use their reasoning and problem-solving skills to create algorithms as part of a computational thinking process to ‘win’ the game. This game can be modified for classifying triangles or other polygons.
  • Display the learning intentions (slide 2) and outline the lesson.
  • Go to slide 3 and talk about the game they are about to play: ‘Celebrity quadrilaterals’. Explain that this game will help them to classify quadrilaterals by their special properties. Ask them what a quadrilateral is; if they don’t respond, define the term. Suggestion: ‘A quadrilateral is a polygon with four sides. Some quadrilaterals can have two classifications, for example, a square is also a rectangle, a parallelogram and a rhombus. In this game we will classify our quadrilaterals and corresponding celebrity name by the most applicable description.’
  • Ask for three volunteers to sit on three chairs at the front of the classroom, facing the class, with their back to the board or a wall. On the board behind them and above their heads (or on cards on the wall), write the names of three different special quadrilaterals from the slide (one per student).
  • The three volunteers ask the class yes/no questions to assist them in identifying the quadrilateral behind them. If the response to their question is ‘yes’, the student gets another turn. If the response is ‘no’, the next player asks a question. The three students are to remain seated until all quadrilaterals have been identified.
  • Repeat the task using two special quadrilaterals and one non-convex dart (arrowhead) quadrilateral. (Slide 4; refer to or use Convex and non-convex polygons: Information sheet .)

Draw different orientations of the quadrilaterals on the board too, so they look ‘different’, to address misunderstandings. The game can be played a third time if desired.

Explore 40 mins

  • How many yes/no questions do you need to ask to guarantee you know your quadrilateral?
  • What would you ask first?
  • If the class says ‘yes’, what would you ask next?
  • If the class says ‘no’, what would you ask next?
  • Provide an example of what a decision tree looks like. An example of a triangle classification algorithm is shown on slides 6 and 7. The Quadrilateral worksheet offers a printable version of the quadrilaterals table and decision tree example.
  • Give students 20–40 minutes to develop a decision tree algorithm.
  • Once the algorithms are starting to come together, tell the class that it is important to test the algorithm against all possible classifications.
  • Ask students to pair up with another group of students to test their algorithm for all the ‘celebrity’ quadrilaterals from the worksheet.
  • Students are then asked to refine their algorithm based on the feedback.

Summary and reflection 10 mins

  • Each group is asked to describe to the class how their algorithm works. What do they think works well in their algorithms? How could they improve its efficiency?
  • If you have time, use slide 8 as an exit slip.

A parallelogram is defined as a quadrilateral with two pairs of parallel sides. In a rectangle, any two sides next to each other are perpendicular. So any two opposite sides are perpendicular to a third side, and therefore are parallel to each other. Therefore, a rectangle also has two pairs of parallel sides.

We love hearing from guests about their time in Russia and one comment often hear is how surprised people are by the Russian capital. We can’t say for certain what people expected but we do know that it’s always far removed from what they imagined! It’s been called a modern metropolis, a cosmopolitan city, an historic gem, an architectural treasure and a cultural powerhouse, among other descriptions. Majestic Moscow has always surprised our guests and left them with lasting and fond memories.

Russia’s famous Golden Ring is an archipelago of historic towns surrounding Moscow. Uglich is one of the oldest and was founded under Igor, the last Varangian prince. It once resisted the Mongol invasion and its ancient walls saw the grisly murder of young Dmitri, son of Ivan the Terrible. The impressive Church of St. Dmitri on the Blood, with its classic onion domes and blood red walls, is a fine example of classic Russian architecture. The tour ends with an enchanting choral concert.

This, the oldest city on the Volga River, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts a wealth of ancient orthodox treasures. The impressive Transfiguration of the Savior, adorned with murals depicting St. John’s apocalyptic visions can be seen in the Spassky Monastery. The Church of St. Elijah the Prophet is decorated with an awe-inspiring selection of rich frescoes. For a real taste of pre-revolutionary Russia, visitors are entertained by a costumed reception at the Governor’s House.

Close to the shores of White Lake once were the ‘tsar’s fishing grounds’. It lies in a place so serene that ancient monks chose to build no fewer than three holy sites here, including the Ferapontov Monastery. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, its chapels boast magnificent frescoes by Dionysius, one of Russia’s most renowned icon painters. The Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery was a refuge for many nobles during tumultuous times and later a fortress that successfully repelled invading armies.

The glorious island village of Kizhi consists almost entirely of the traditionally styled wooden buildings of ‘Old Russia’. Among them is the famous Transfiguration Church built in 1714. Remarkably, and in testament to the craftsmen of the time, not a single nail was used in its construction! Kizhi is one of the favorite stops on the river cruise to St. Petersburg.

A typical rural hamlet brought to life by warm and welcoming villagers. Volga Dream guests are invited into local homes to enjoy classic Russian fare, tea with jam and ‘pirozhki’ (pies). Enthusiastic hosts share Russian traditions and the appeal of village life while proudly showing off their scrupulously kept homes and kitchen gardens. The tour continues with a brief bus ride to see a unique World War II memorial and then, for a real glimpse of Russian life, a visit to a local primary school.

Nizhny Novgorod

This was once a wealthy city thanks to its proximity to rich eastern trading routes. During the Soviet era, the city was closed to outsiders because of its military importance. It’s also where many political prisoners were sent to live out their days in exile. The 16th-century Kremlin ramparts offer spectacular views and the city is known for its elaborately decorated churches. For Volga Dream cruise guests, the highlight of the day is an evening folk concert performed by local children.

Sailing along the Volga river, the riverbank gradually ceases to be dominated by Orthodox churches. Instead, beautiful mosques appear as the river crosses into Tatarstan where the first stop is scenic Kazan, the region’s capital. Inside the white walls of the citadel, the famous Kul Sharif mosque and the old Cathedral of Peter and Paul stand side-by-side symbolizing the two faiths’ long and peaceful coexistence in the region. A concert of traditional Tatar music ends the Volga Dream tour in Kazan.

Passing the Zhigulevskie Mountains offers wonderful views from the sundeck before touring the city. One of the key attractions is the fascinating Space Museum, which offers a revealing glimpse of how the Soviet Union pursued its ambitious journey to the cosmos. The town is also noted for its beautiful esplanade, perfect for a relaxed stroll beside the Volga river. This in turn leads to the Samara State Art Museum. Founded in 1897, it is home to a collection of more than 16,000 works of art.

This city is best known for its close associations with cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin. The Russian hero who achieved worldwide fame as the first man in space lived and studied here. Saratov used to be home to a large German community, a heritage that can still be seen in the local architecture. The Volga Dream tour visits the Radishchev State Art Museum, the first picture gallery in Russia outside Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Originally called Tsaritsyn, the city was renamed Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961 in honor of the USSR’s leader. During World War II, the city’s residents put up a heroic defense, repelling an advancing Nazi invasion. The battle for Stalingrad has gone down in history as a pivotal moment in the bloody conflict on the eastern front. The most ferocious and deadly fighting took place on Mamayev Hill, where an imposing memorial now stands close to the excellent Battle of Stalingrad Panorama Museum.

Saint Petersburg

If Moscow surprises, then St Petersburg delights. Peter the Great founded the city to showcase Russia’s newfound enlightenment. He wanted to show the modern world a cultured and advanced society. In short, he built the city to impress and in that he succeeded splendidly! The striking buildings were designed by some of the finest architects Europe had to offer and even now, the ‘Venice of the North’ never fails to enchant with its spectacular buildings and impressive canal network. It is a city of true grandeur.

Cocktails with the Captain

Commanding any ship is a complex role that calls for a long list of skills. Captains know their vessels inside out as well as well as the routes they sail and when things don’t go to plan, they have to make instant decisions. Above all though, the most important part of the job, underpinning everything they do, is to keep the ship and everyone aboard safe. The Captain’s cocktail party is a great and a wonderful opportunity for passengers and crew to get acquainted as the gets underway.

Matryoshka doll painting

There is nothing more typically Russian than a Matryoshka. It embodies the fact that there’s always something deeper to be found in every aspect of Russian life. Learning the traditional designs and techniques used to decorate these iconic dolls offers a pleasant diversion and some cathartic creativity!

Superb Service & Dining

Our restaurant serves the highest standard of international cuisine, freshly made by our Cordon Bleu Chef. Choose either a sumptuous buffet or set menu for lunch while dinner is always four or five courses with full service. High praise for the exquisite quality of meals is yet another constantly recurring feature in feedback from our guests.

Meet the Professor

From the Mongol hordes to Soviet times, Russia’s history is, like all of Europe’s, a complex web of political intrigue, war and peace, trade and treaties, as well as heroes and villains. Academics devote whole lifetimes to studying Russia’s long past and one of them presents a series of lectures shedding light on everything from Gorbachev to Chekhov, Khrushchev to Ivan the Terrible and of course, contemporary Russia. Our Professor is on board throughout the river cruise for informal conversation.

Beginner’s Russian

The Russian language can be rather beautiful and poetic and we know that many seasoned travelers enjoy trying their hand at different languages. Our onboard teachers provide an introduction to the riches of Russian, so guests can try out a few useful words and phrases on real Russians during the exciting river tours from Moscow to St. Petersburg or from Moscow to Volgograd!

Russian tea tasting

The drink we tend to associate with Russia is vodka, but tea, in fact, is the much more universal beverage of choice throughout the country. Guests will get acquainted with the Russian tea etiquette, a fundamental component of the country's social culture, and enjoy the traditional tea ceremony while cruising from St. Petersburg to Moscow or taking a Grand Volga river tour.

Russian Dinner & Vodka Tasting

All our dining is international but for Russian Dining night, the Chef includes a selection of traditional Russian dishes: Chicken Kiev, Kulebyaka and no Russian table is complete without Borsch. To add to the ‘Taste of Russia’ optional Russian dress, or at least a touch of Russian style, is provided along with enthusiastic help from our staff!

Russian Cooking Class

A plate of pelmeni might not look like much to the untrained eye, but it forms the heart of Russian cuisine and culture. Basically, it's a type of dumpling: small portions of meat and onion wrapped in a thin sheet of unleavened dough and boiled, a little like ravioli. Guests can join a Russian cooking class onboard the MS Volga Dream to learn how to cook this delicious Russian dish.

Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov Piano Recital

Some of the greatest classical music ever written comes from Russia. It’s hard to imagine a more fitting stage for a virtuoso solo recital by our resident concert pianist than the mighty Volga or a better backdrop than the heart of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov’s own serene homeland.

Viking Rurik Review

Review of viking rurik.

The Viking Rurik ship cruises on Volga River in Russia, departing from Moscow to St Petersburg , and from St Petersburg to Moscow . This Viking cruise ship is named after Rurik - a Viking in origin (prince/chieftain from the Varangian Rus tribe), brother to Sineus and Truvor. Consolidating the lands of his two brothers, Rurik and his dynasty established their capital in Kyiv. They ruled over Russia (the huge Kievan Rus empire) for nearly 700 years.

Viking Rurik Wiki

Viking Rurik is one of Viking Cruises Russia ships. The other vessels in the line's "Europe-Asian" fleet are  Akun ,  Helgi ,  Ingvar ,  Truvor , and in Ukraine -  Sineus . You can compare Russian river cruises as prices also on  Uniworld River Victoria  and  Scenic Tours Scenic Tsar  - sailing the same route between Moscow and Petersburg.

The Viking Rurik ship was built in East Germany during the USSR times under the name "MS Mariya Ulyanova". Viking River Cruises acquired the vessel in 1990 and renamed it "Viking Peterhof". In 2012, after an extensive refit and refurbishment, they renamed it once again - to the current "Viking Rurik". MS Peterhof ship was one of all 22 Russian river cruise vessels constructed in the period 1974-1983 (Project name "301" /first series, river passenger ship class "Vladimir Ilyich"). Because of its V-bottom hull shape, Rurik can also operate as Baltic Sea cruising vessel. The ship was ordered by USSR/Russia's "North-Western Shipping Company" (now "Vodohod").

Note: You can see the CruiseMapper's list of all river cruise ships and riverboats in the "itinerary" section of our  River Cruises hub. All companies and their fleets are listed there. For other Russia-based ships, you can visit our dedicated to Russian River Cruises  hub.

Built as "Mariya Ulyanova", MS Viking Rurik is one of Russia's signature "Project 301" river cruise ships.

Vladimir Ilyich-class Russian river ships

"Vladimir Ilyich class" (aka "Project 301") are 3 series of Russian river cruise ships built in GDR (Germany) for USSR (Soviet Union) in the period 1974-1983. The vessel class name honours Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov (1870-1924) who is considered the founder of USSR (Soviet Union).

These Russian river cruise ships (a total of 22 units) were all produced by VEB Elbewerft Boizenburg as one of the industry's most successful riverboat designs. These ships were used for passenger (cruise) shipping in Northwestern USSR - in the rivers Volga, Belomorkanal, Lake Onega, Volga–Don Canal, Kama and Amur rivers as well as on Dnieper River (Ukraine ) and in the Black Sea. Following the USSR's collapse (1991), all these boats were acquired by private companies (Russian and foreign).

MS William Wordsworth ship on Danube River, Budapest

After years of painstaking research to create the most perfect vessels afloat, a new era in river cruising dawns as we introduce our state of the art ‘all suite’ ships. Swiss operated and truly world-class, we are absolutely delighted to present the five-star MS William Wordsworth.

It is extremely difficult to convey just how extraordinary this outstanding ship really is and exactly what distinguishes it from similar vessels. It would be very easy to just say ‘luxurious’ but it’s much more than that; we have deliberately avoided the current trend for a minimalist style where you could be anywhere in the world, creating instead a unique yet exquisite blend of understated taste, style and elegance at the highest level. Immediately striking is just how exceptionally spacious this new vessel is as you enter a gleaming, richly coloured marble-floored lobby flooded with natural light from a stunning atrium above. Moving inside, exceptional creativity from Europe’s finest design studio has produced a superbly balanced masterpiece of onboard style, utilising sustainable rich hardwoods, gleaming brass and polished copper, sparkling glass and intricate wrought iron. The ship is beautifully illuminated throughout – including the exterior and imaginatively furnished with harmonious colour schemes, all designed to create the serene atmosphere reflective of the golden age of cruising which time after time you tell us you adore.

The restaurant rivals the finest on shore establishments taking fine dining to another level complemented by delicate European porcelain, gleaming glassware and the intuitive service in which the Swiss excel. This superb vessel carries 44 in-house trained crew members serving just 169 guests (similar size vessels may carry well over 190 passengers) giving the ratio which our experience proves is concurrent with our first class service levels.

Furthermore your suite will easily exceed your expectations for not only will you enjoy the most discerning décor, so too the ship’s dimensions afford the ultimate in space and comfort - a minimum 17 square metres (183 square feet), with upgrades available to ‘Superior’ and ‘Deluxe’ accommodation.

In addition you will enjoy a private exterior balcony complete with table and chairs - perfect for an ‘al fresco’ breakfast should you wish or just a quiet morning coffee or a pre-dinner ‘sundowner’ whilst watching the world drift by.

With the same fittings as standard suites, exquisitely and lavishly appointed to the very highest standard, plus complimentary soft cotton bathrobes and slippers adding the final little touch, this really is the epitome of river cruise luxury!

Indulge in the luxury of Riviera Plus when you stay in an upper deck cabin or suite. In your well-appointed cabin, you’ll find a range of extras to make your experience extra special.

Deluxe Balcony Suites

Superior Suites

Bringing your cruise to another level, why not upgrade to a Superior Suite available on the Ruby and Diamond decks. Substantially larger at 23 square metres (247 sq. feet) and with the additional space devoted to the living area, you will immediately notice the benefit as you relax in your stylish surroundings. Of course the identical high quality furnishings and fittings as the standard suite are evident throughout, again with stunning views from the panoramic floor to ceiling sliding glass doors.

Superior Suites

A gleaming wood door opens revealing your exceptionally appointed suite. At 17 square metres (183 square feet), its generous dimensions are amongst the largest you will find on a cruiser gracing any European river. Imaginatively designed and appointed to the highest specification, with all the luxury you would expect to find in a smart ‘boutique style’ hotel, your comfort definitely won’t be compromised on any level!

The gleaming marble bathroom features a powerful fully glazed shower with a large ‘rainshower’ head, superbly refreshing after a hard day’s sightseeing. Clever design allows for ample space, and contemporary lighting, complimentary cosmetics by ‘Crabtree and Evelyn’ and fluffy towels, makes preparing for the day ahead an absolute pleasure.

The chic styling of a talented designer’s eye extends to the entire suite with generous use of hand-crafted tropical hardwoods blended with premium fittings, discreet thoughtful lighting and a colour scheme of calming neutral tones, creating an ambience to put you in the most relaxed frame of mind from the very first minute! A full size bed assures a good night’s rest in crisp cotton linen of the finest quality - a turndown service each evening adds the finishing touch. Please note all suites have two twin beds with individual bedding which can be moved together or separated accordingly.

You will enjoy a particularly generous seating area with two chairs and a table, enabling you to unwind in comfort in the privacy of your own suite whilst a bow camera conveys live images of the ship’s progress to your flat screen TV, ensuring you won’t miss a thing. Careful consideration has been given to the tiniest details with individually controlled air-conditioning so you set the temperature that you desire, a hairdryer, safe, minibar, telephone and the convenience of tea (our meticulous planning even extends to familiar teabags!) and coffee making facilities ensure a familiar home from home experience.

Suites on the Diamond and Ruby Decks have ‘French Balconies’ – panoramic floor to ceiling sliding glass doors bringing riverside life just that little closer!

Suites

Suites on the Emerald Deck are slightly smaller, measuring approximately 16 square metres (172 square feet) and have smaller fixed windows.

Some are available for sole occupancy with no supplement and are subject to availability.

Suites

  • Thoroughly air conditioned public areas and individual heating controls in the cabins
  • Stunning restaurant on the Main Deck serving buffet breakfast, buffet lunch and four-course dinner
  • Lounge and bar to enjoy cocktails and the early risers' breakfast
  • Bistro with open kitchen, large panoramic windows and al fresco seating
  • Lift between Emerald, Ruby and Diamond decks
  • Laundry Service
  • Spa and wellness area featuring Nail Salon and Hairdressing Service
  • Boutique gift shop for your holiday souvenirs
  • Reception area open 24hrs
  • Small splash pool and putting green on the Sun Deck
  • 24hr self service station for complimentary tea & coffee

As you are welcomed aboard the five-star pedigree is striking, with a remarkable feeling of spaciousness and harmonious design at every glance. The three fully air-conditioned accommodation decks including notably the lower deck – are all accessed by an attractive glass lift for your convenience or the wide elegant wrought-iron staircase.

Above these is the magnificent Sun Deck - uniquely and illustrating yet again our considered depth of design, a second staircase amidships affords convenient Sun Deck access. Head on up to this truly spectacular deck and what could be better than watching life ashore slip by from the comfort of a sun lounger, perhaps under shade if the weather gets too hot! There’s always the refreshing splash pool too or why not try your hand on the putting green. Then take a refreshingly long drink and that book you’ve been meaning to read for ages on to the lovely terrace area at the fore of the ship, located right in front of the wheelhouse where you can view the Captain and his team skilfully navigating the twisting river and enjoy truly ‘driving seat’ views. Take a deep breath and relax into the pace of river cruise life – now you’re really on holiday!

The Diamond Deck is where you will find the very heart of the ship - the superb panoramic observation lounge and bar; a lounge in every sense of the word, complete with plenty of comfortable leather armchairs and sumptuous sofas where you can sink into warmly colourful cushions in beautiful quality fabrics with a freshly made cup of tea. A thick wool carpet feels lovely underfoot and the tasteful contemporary lighting above creates a welcoming and refined ambience, further complemented by the discreet and intuitive service resplendent of the finest five-star hotels. So just sit back with your favourite cocktail and take in the truly mesmerising view. After a superb dinner in the restaurant perhaps it’s time for a digestif accompanied by the soothing tones of the ship’s pianist. At the Bistro with its open kitchen, large panoramic windows and al fresco seating, enjoy a more intimate dining experience whilst taking in the fantastic views. Here in the evenings the chef presents his personal signature dishes to a small number of diners with menus varying according to the seasons; this intimate dining experience can be reserved on board at no extra charge. When the weather allows the panoramic windows may be fully opened on to the terrace to allow a delightful al fresco dining experience.

The ship’s restaurant is located on the Ruby (middle) Deck and here you will experience not only exceptional first class cuisine, but also the most attentive yet discreet service from the ship’s highly professional crew. So just sit back with a well-deserved glass of wine from the carefully selected wine list and delight in the wonderful elegance of your surroundings; beautifully laid tables of just 4 or 6 guests, crisp linen, deep wool carpets and warm wood panelling abound to offer a delectable dining experience of the highest order.

On the Emerald (lower) Deck is the fitness centre, perfect for working off all those delicious meals or for something less strenuous treat yourself to a relaxing massage. So you will always look your best there is a hairdresser’s too which also offers manicure and pedicure treatments. Simply put, these world-class ships, elegant and refined in the truest sense, take the idea of river cruising to another level – it really doesn’t get better than this!
