Multimillion-dollar mega yachts: Our ranking methodology

A superyacht or mega yacht is typically a motor yacht or sailing yacht with a length of 30 meters (100 feet) or more. For this ranking, we looked at the superyachts and luxury expedition mega yachts that are used privately or made available for charter. We excluded so-called ‘residential superyachts’ (think Njord and The World), which are essentially luxury apartment buildings at sea where people own private residences inside the superyacht rather than the whole yacht. By researching diverse, reliable sources like Wikipedia and the Superyacht Times, we compile a list of the largest yachts in the world.

Ever wonder where Jeff Bezos spends his downtime? As of today, we’re predicting it to be on his $500 million superyacht. Y721—nicknamed Koru—is 127m long. And featuring three sky-high slender masts, Koru is said to be the largest sailing yacht in the world . 

With dark exteriors and natural wooden decks, Koru is inspired by another one of Bezos’ yachts—the Black Pearl. The clean lines and classically curved bow speak to an understated elegance despite the yacht’s mammoth size. While a long line of portals indicates at least 9 guest cabins. In light of all the secrecy surrounding Koru, we doubt Bezos will ever charter her out, but we can still dream.

Adeptly named, the magnificent superyacht embodies the serenity of a life at sea. Serene was built in Italy for a Russian owner in 2011. She was leased to Bill Gates for the Summer in 2014 for $5 million per week. 

Designed by Reymond Langton, the 134m mega yacht marries elegant sophistication with state-of-the-art technologies. The seven decks leave ample space for guests to soak in scintillating views. While the underwater viewing room—nicknamed the Nemo room—is a permanent gallery of resplendent sealife. The real-life snow room makes up to four inches of snow. And whilst this may seem odd when your billionaire boss asks for snow—you make it snow.

Yet another Lurssen masterpiece, Crescent pays homage to classic naval designs with traditional architecture and elegant interiors. Formerly named Project Thunder, she was built in Germany and delivered to Igor Sechin in 2018. The Russian oligarch’s superyacht was seized by Spain after sanctions were placed on Russia in 2022. 

Crescent features low bulwarks and full-height windows to maximize the view from the center of the boat. Her distinctive wing station provides unrivaled views for up to 18 guests. But don’t get your hopes up—Crescent is strictly for private use only and isn’t available for charter.

Savarona is the second-largest yacht built by Blohm & Voss and spends most of her time in the Mediterranean. This luxury superyacht is one of the oldest in the market — a perfect fusion of traditional charm and modern facilities. 

Previously named Gunes Dil, Savarona was designed by Cox & Stevens, with interior design carefully handled by Donald Starkey. She’s available to charter on a weekly basis and has been refurbished over the years. Back in the day, her cost price was $4 million, and in 1989, she was chartered by Kahraman Sadikoglu, owner of the Turkish Sadikoglu Group, who spent an estimated $50 million on refurbishing her from top to bottom.

Flying Fox is known as the most expensive charter yacht in the world , and a week aboard will set you back around $3 million. Chartered by the one and only power couple Beyonce and Jay-Z in 2021, it’s filled to the brim with all of the luxury facilities you could ever possibly want. 

The Flying Fox is rumored to be owned by Jeff Bezos, although that’s a claim that’s never been totally certified. She spends most of her time in the Mediterranean, specifically Cannes, Capri, and Sardinia, although she’s recently visited Norway, too. She can accommodate the largest helicopters on the market, and it reportedly took more than 50 meetings with her owner for interior design to be completed.

The Rising Sun’s original owner, Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle Corporation, sold her in 2010 as he considered her too large. Famously used by David Geffen for self-isolation, Rising Sun has also been a popular hang-out spot for celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Beatrice, the Princess of York. 

She’s a Superyacht with impressive attention to detail like interiors kitted out in teak and onyx and endless features like a full gym, a large wine cellar, a sauna, and a spa. She’s got a full-size basketball court that doubles up as a helicopter landing pad and a private cinema for those long evenings spent at sea.

Al Salamah is part of the Omani Royal fleet and started her very secretive life in Genoa. Known as the world’s biggest superyacht right up until 2016, she’s a sleek masterpiece of a ship, with a distinctive cream color and beach club design. 

Al Salamah does everything in multiples, from the five galleys onboard (the main galley, a bakery, a crew galley, an owner’s diet galley, and an Arab galley), three hospitals (one for the owner, one for guests, and one for the crew) and 2,000 sqm of floor space. She was put on sale briefly for $280 million USD, before being delisted and instead given as a gift to the Crown Prince of Bahrain.

Everything about Solaris was supposed to be kept a secret when she was being built—a secret that didn’t last long when her huge size was spotted undergoing sea trials in the North Sea. One of this Superyacht’s main attractions is her beach club on the top floor: the perfect spot for relaxation during those long days out at sea. 

That beach club comes complemented with endless other stylish amenities, like a large helipad, sun deck, and a crane to launch tenders, toys, and subs. Interior design is largely unknown, but, if it’s anything as sleek and white as its exteriors, it’s sure to be impressive.

Two helicopter landing pads, two outdoor Jacuzzis, and two outdoor fire pits: Scheherazade doesn’t hold back with not only the essentials but also the luxuries. Previously named Lightning, “Scheherazade” is mostly associated with a female character in the Middle Eastern folk tales in the series One Thousand and One Nights. 

Not much is known about this superyacht, and even her birth and building process were referred to under a codename: Project Lightning. No one involved in her creation, even Lurssen, has revealed anything about her interiors or her owner. All that’s really known is that she sailed from Germany to Norway initially after completion.

Ocean Victory has traveled all over the world, from Europe to Southeast Asia and back again. Owned by Russian billionaire Viktor Rashnikov, she’s the upgraded vessel to follow his purchase of the 76-meter Ebony Shine. 

She’s one designed with pure luxury in mind, from the six individual swimming pools onboard to the 300-square meter spa area. She’s beautiful both inside and out, with a unique concept designed by Espen Oeino and interior designer Alberto Pinto. The largest superyacht ever built in Italy, Ocean Victory shows some of the finest in the world when it comes to premium quality adventures at sea.

Yas is known best for its seamless and rather unusual design — one that’s a little different from most superyachts out there. The owner of Yas wanted a yacht that lived up to his own heritage; one with a backbone reminiscent of the navy and with abstract lines throughout. 

He chose an existing boat in Abu Dhabi, which was deconstructed within the region before being shipped off and renovated into the wonder that it is today. The Yas yacht was originally a Dutch navy frigate, which you’d never guess from strolling around onboard today.

Nord’s distinctive bow design has never been seen before on a yacht. That’s one of the first things you’ll notice about her. The next thing you’ll notice is her unusual design, which verges on battle-esque and has been called “ a warship wearing a tuxedo ” by Dan Lenard of the Italian design studio Nuvolari-Lenard. 

She’s one of the best superyachts out there for fun, with a sports and diving center on the lower deck, a swimming pool higher up, overlooking the ocean, and a fleet of tenders. She was designed for global exploration: a yacht that will calmly cruise her way all across the world.

Challenging the status quo and pushing design boundaries, Sailing Yacht A is an enigma. The sail-assisted superyacht was built in Germany and delivered to Russian tycoon Andrey Melnichenko in 2017. However, she was seized by the Italian police force, Guardia di Finanza, in 2022 after sanctions were placed on Russian businessmen following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. 

Distinguished by soaring rotating carbon fiber masts, Nobiskrug’s hybrid approach to superyachts makes Sailing Yacht A more eco-conscious than other luxury yachts of her size. The u nderwater viewing pod molded into the keel speaks to her unrivaled innovation. And many balconies are enclosed by some of the largest pieces of curved glass ever made.

12. El Mahrousa | 478 feet – 146m

El Mahrousa had a few different names in her time, ranging from the translated “The Protected” to El Horreya, which in Arabic translates to “Freedom.” It’s not surprising that she’s had more than one name when you take into account her age. As the oldest superyacht in the world, she’s undergone a lot of restoration over time, including multiple lengthenings and faster engines. 

She was renamed back to El Mahrousa in 2000 and gained even more recognition for being the first ship to cross the new Suez Canal extension in 2015. Back in her original days, she was built on the River Thames and took her first trip in 1867.

Delivered in Japan in 1982, OK is one of the largest and most unique superyachts in the world. Sprawling over 479 feet, the water giant is engineered to submerge almost seventy percent. This is accredited to the work done by Karmarine Shipyard. While the majority of the vessel was built by Oshima Shipping, it was privately converted to a semi-submersible yacht in Turkey. 

The superlative finishing on OK superyacht was designed by Timur Bozca, winner of the Younger Designer of the Year award in 2015. The blueprint being as many games as possible. The extraordinary vessel has the uncanny ability to hold over seventy toys, including a sailing yacht, a sea plane, tenders, buggies and even a tennis court.

Like many of the most majestic water titans, Opera was delivered by Lurssen in Germany and built for Abu Dhabi royalty. This time, the owner is Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, son of the founder of the United Arab Emirates. And while it may not be quite as astronomical as Lurssen’s previous builds—Azzam, Blue and Dilbar—the streamlined vessel is equally impressive onboard. 

The three-story superyacht proves large enough for a pair of helipads and two swimming pools, amongst many other toys, while simultaneously making room for up to 48 guests and 80 crew members. When it comes to the interior, details are sparse, but we do know that it was designed by Terence Disdale, a London firm renowned for creating bespoke luxury spaces.

The Prince Abdulaziz’s yacht was ordered by King Fahd, who named her after his son Prince Abdul Aziz. Now, she’s owned by his brother, Abdullah. Just one of the yachts owned by the Saudi royal family, she’s spotted frequently throughout Europe, especially in Cannes, where the royal family owns a property. 

She’s been redecorated once — in 2007 — in a project that took 15 months to complete, without even taking into account the rest of the ship’s upkeep. The Prince Abdulaziz is known for its combination of bold colors and fusion of traditional and modern design, thanks to its influence from the late David Hicks.

What do you do when the name “A” is already taken for your superyacht? Choose the next closest thing: A+. Previously named Topaz, this superyacht was the world’s fourth-largest luxury yacht when she was built, before being stripped of that particular title only a few years later. 

Nevertheless, she’s a seriously impressive superyacht, with endless facilities like a large jacuzzi, double helicopter landing pads, a swimming pool with a swimming platform and underwater lights, as well as a fitness hall, cinema, and a large conference room. She’s also well equipped with water toys, like jet skis, inflatable boats, a catamaran, and even a mini-submarine.

Another Superyacht built, shrouded in secrecy, Al-Said was referred to as “Project Sunflower” the entire time she was being created, right up until she was delivered to her owner in 2008. Not much is known about Al Said, from her movements through to her amenities — although she is known to have a huge concert room with space for a full 50-person orchestra. 

Currently, she’s flying the flag of Oman and has spent a lot of time in its surrounding waters. Her interior was styled by British designer design house RWD, with exterior design being credited to Espen Oeino. When she was delivered to the Sultan of Oman, she replaced a previous ship of a smaller size.

Dilbar, or Project Omar, as it was originally known as, is another superyacht designed with the help of exterior expert Espen Oeino, but with interiors strikingly designed by Andrew Winch. Dilbar is famously known as the world’s largest yacht by gross tonnage (interior volume) but as the fifth-longest superyacht in the world. 

She’s home to a spa pool and beach club, as well as a large private cinema, spacious cabins set high on the main deck, a spacious dining room, and a salon with its own piano. She’s just as classy and beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside.

Sunday blues simply cease to exist on one of the world’s most extravagant superyachts. The elegant behemoth was built for member of the ruling family of Abu Dhabi and billionaire, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan in 2022. Valued at over $600 million, Blue is one of the most expensive superyachts in the world. And with a strong emphasis on the environment, this superyacht is also one of the most sustainable. 

Blue strives to be as environmentally friendly as possible. She is equipped with a highly efficient Diesel-Electric Hybrid Propulsion Concept developed by Lürssen’s own engineering specialists. And the wastewater treatment plant allows water to be disposed of in drinking water quality.

Dubai had multiple names in the planning stages—including Panhandle, Platinum, and Golden Star. Owned by the ruler of Dubai, it was aptly named after its home country and comes with all of the luxurious amenities you’d expect from such a name. 

The Dubai comes complete with a huge swimming pool and two jacuzzis. Further down, you’ll find a large dining room with striking blue and burgundy decor and space for up to 90 guests. Dubai usually spends her time moored at Sheikh Mohammed’s private island in front of his summer palace in Dubai. She’s basically the definition of a floating palace.

It took around five years for Eclipse to be built from start to finish. While she was always designed to be a huge, luxurious Superyacht, the focus was more on decking it out appropriately rather than breaking any records. An award-winning superyacht, she’s incredibly spacious, with endless rooms to explore and a sleek, neutral color palette running through. 

The Eclipse’s owner, Roman Abramovich, was more focused on facilities: he wanted more than one helicopter pad and a large swimming pool, too. Other than that, designer Terry Disdale had free reign for the rest of the superyacht. It’s just as much a clean piece of architectural styling as it is a stunning experience on deck.

Fulk Al Salamah translates to “Ship of Peace” and that’s something that sounds like a given when you’ve taken a look at this superyacht’s incredible layout. Developed under the codename Project Saffron, Fulk Al Salamah is more of a support vessel than she is a typical superyacht. 

While she might still come complete with all of the necessities for a particularly relaxing voyage, she’s more so known for being a transport ship for the Royal Navy of Oman. She’s also used as a sort of friendship boat — pun intended — and is often sailed across the world with the intention of strengthening ties with the Sultanate. In some ports, influential people are welcomed onboard.

Most superyachts in the top 10 category have a few mere inches between sizes, but the Azzam shoots far ahead with a large amount of extra length. The largest superyacht in the world, she was never designed to win the title — rather just to be a sleek and elegant vessel. Azzam was crafted backward, with the plans for her interior confirmed long before her exterior was fully signed off. 

Her length only came to be as such to incorporate everything required for the interiors, which added an extra 35 meters to her overall size. She’s also designed to look smaller than she actually is, with a blend of indoor and outdoor living. It took more than 4,000 people to build Azzam , clocking up six million man-hours over a period of four years.

The most expensive yacht in the world

The fact that the History Supreme, the world’s most expensive superyacht, comes coated in gold, is only part of the reason for its high cost. A superyacht with a real-life Midas touch, it was sold to an anonymous Malaysian businessman for $4.8 billion. 

Robert Kuok, the richest Malaysian businessman, is the rumored owner of History Supreme, but no one has confirmed for sure. The History Supreme also comes with plenty of other impressive touches: a master bedroom decked out in platinum, a wall feature made from meteoric stone, and a genuine T-Rex dinosaur bone, to add to the list. 

She took three years to build from scratch and comes with 10,000 kilograms of solid gold and platinum. Other seriously luxe features are her 68 kilograms 24-carat gold Aquavista Panoramic Wall Aquarium and a liquor bottle adorned with a rare 18.5-carat diamond . The base of the vessel comes wrapped in gold, too.

The 181-m (590 ft) Azzam is the world’s longest yacht in length, but the 156-m Dilbar has a much larger internal volume (measured in Gross Tons) at 15,917 GT (Gross Tons) versus 13,136 GT for Azzam. The biggest yacht in the world is the Azzam , which has an estimated cost of $600 million. She’s owned by Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and is not currently for sale.

Top 25 Superyachts Now

The new arrivals in 2024 knock the mighty 436.4-foot  Al Mirqab   and  Koru , Jeff Bezos’s sailing yacht, off the list. The “smallest” yacht— Serene —measures a whopping 439.3 feet. A raft of behemoths didn’t make it, including Feadship’s 290-foot Project 821 that is launching this year, the largest build from the Dutch shipyard to date.

Two of Lürssen’s 2024 deliveries also fell short, including Project Deep Blue and Project JassJ. That said, the German yard remains top of the leader board with the immoveable 592.6-foot  Azzam . It also claims 13 of the 25 world’s largest yachts, two of which are new entries.

The list is interesting because most were built in the last 15 years, but there are several historical yachts, including  Savarona , launched in 1931, and  El Mahrousa , launched in 1865, that withstand the test of time. Others like  Yas  and  OK are conversions from other types of vessels. The inimitable  A  is a one-of-a-kind, never-to-be-repeated sailing superyacht.

Azzam | 592 feet, 6 inches

Lürssen Azzam

Lürssen could never really boast about Azzam after its launch in 2013 because of the owner’s penchant for privacy, though it did describe the interior by Christophe Leoni, which features a 95-foot-long main salon, as “inspired by the Empire style of the early 19th century.” Owner Mubarak Saad al Ahbabi directed a team of designers and engineers who started with the bare concept, worked through the technical challenges of what might be the most complex superyacht ever, and finished with an unusually large vessel that can top the 30-knot mark when operating in “sprint mode”. Its gas turbines, connected to water jets, also give it the ability to operate at high speed in shallow waters. Nauta Yacht’s exterior features a long, sleek forward area, with well-proportioned tiers moving up to the skydeck. It took an impressive six million man-hours—or four years including engineering—to build.  Azzam  accommodates up to 36 guests, and a crew of 80.

Fulk Al Salamah | 538 feet, 1 inch

"Fulk Al Salamah," Mariotti Yachts

Little information has been released about the world’s second-longest superyacht, the custom-built Fulk Al Salamah , and it has been shrouded in mystery since it was first announced in 2014. Even the overall length of 538.1 feet has been estimated from AIS data. However, the imposing vessel, built and delivered by Italian builder Mariotti Yachts in their Genoa shipyard in 2016, is believed to be owned by Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman. Last refit in 2021, the yacht has an exterior design by Studio de Jorio, and it is considered by some to resemble more of a support vessel than a superyacht. Nonetheless, aerial photography shows an impressively large helideck, raked masts, and a bathing platform.

Eclipse | 533 feet, 1 inch

Superyacht Eclipse

The 533.1-foot stately  Eclipse , one of two yachts on this list owned by sanctioned billionaire Roman Abramovich, took five years to design and build. When it left the Blohm+Voss shipyard in Hamburg in 2010, it was the world’s largest yacht. The interior has 17 staterooms and a palatial primary suite, with the capacity to carry 85 crew. Both the interior and exterior are designed by Terence Disdale. A proportional profile is defined by tiered decks that sweep upward and bend ever so slightly at the aft ends. Eclipse  has a 185-foot-long owner’s deck, the capacity to hold three helicopters, a sophisticated stabilization system, six tenders, and an enormous spa, gym and beach club, not to mention one of the largest swimming pools on any superyacht. Hybrid diesel-electric engines are connected to Azipod drives that give Eclipse a top-end speed of 21 knots, with a range of 6,000 nautical miles.

Dubai | 531 feet, 5 inches

Even at 531.5 feet, Dubai ’s all-white Winch-designed exterior belies the dramatic and vibrant interior within. Colorful mosaic floors, a spiraling glass staircase, 70-foot-wide atrium, and bursts of red, blue, and green create a carnival of scene. Originally commissioned for Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei as a joint project between Blohm+Voss and Lürssen . Known as “Panhandle,” the project was halted in 1998 with just a bare hull and skeletal superstructure. The hull was sold to the government of Dubai, and, under the direction of the country’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, work on the 531.5-footer began again, though this time by Platinum Yachts. Dubai delivered in 2006 and is now the sheikh’s royal yacht, with accommodations for 24 guests and quarters for 88 crew. The SOLAS-certified seven-decked yacht has a landing pad for a Black Hawk helicopter, submarine garage, disco and cinema, and can reach a top speed of 26 knots. There’s also a waterfall that cascades from the yacht’s pool, located aft of the main deck. The yacht’s range of 8,500 nm at 25 knots gives it the potential to cruise around the world in record time.

Blue | 518 feet, 3 inches

Lürssen Superyacht Blue

Lürssen’s newest entry on the list, Blue , which delivered to its Middle Eastern owner in July 2022, may rank at number five out of the world’s largest yachts, but its diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system goes a long way to minimize emissions. The yacht also features an electric Azimuth pod drive that can be used independently or in conjunction with the twin propeller shafts. There is a waste-water treatment system and an advanced exhaust treatment system to help reduce NOx levels, as well as cut down on vibration and noise pollution. Interior and exterior design is by Terence Disdale, Blue is defined in profile by a raked bow with a helipad, an aft deck pool, and twin balconies forward either side of the owner’s full-beam suite. There is a second, smaller helipad aft. The British designer has reportedly penned a feminine and elegant interior, though no images have yet been released.

Dilbar | 511 feet, 8 inches

Espen Øino Dilbar yacht

The 2016 launch of Dilbar gave Lürssen the distinction of not only building the longest yacht ever ( Azzam ), but also the largest in terms of volume. Espen Øino designed the exterior, creating a full-bodied superstructure of long, flowing decks, along with two helicopter pads,two helicopter pads, one of which has a hangar with an H175 helicopter always on standby.  Dilbar  also has an oversized garden and an 82-foot swimming pool that can hold an incredible 6,357-cubic-feet of water and according to Lürssen, is the world’s longest on a yacht. The interior by  Winch Design  is defined by its “rare and exclusive luxury materials,” says the builder, declining to go into detail. Despite  Dilbar ’s volume, the designers did a masterful job making the yacht look relatively svelte. In June 2020, Dilbar returned to Lürssen for a significant refit, where the yacht remains following U.S. sanctions placed on the owner, Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, in 2022. The yacht’s value is estimated to be $600 million.

Al Saïd | 508 feet, 5 inches

Al Said measures 508'5" and was built by Lurssen Yachts

Another 500-plus-foot yacht from Lürssen, the original Project Sunflower gained its official name of Al Saïd following its launch in 2016. Espen Øino’s exterior is akin to a classic cruise liner, complete with the twin-exhaust stacks in the center of the superstructure. Owned by the Sultan of Oman, the yacht was listed for the sale for the first time in April 2022 for an undisclosed sum, but a buyer has yet to be confirmed. The six-decked  Al Saïd  can carry 154 crew and an estimated 70 guests across 26 suites. Lürssen reports a top speed of 22 knots. The London-based Redman Whiteley Dixon studio designed the interior, which includes a concert hall that can hold a 50-piece orchestra, a private cinema for 50 people; you’ll also find a medical room and dental care on board.

A+ | 483 feet, 1 inch

Lürssen Topaz largest yachts in the world

Very little is known about A+ (formerly Topaz) , which was launched by Lürssen in 2012. Tim Heywood Designs did the exterior, which features helipads on the foredeck and amidships on an upper deck. A lower aft deck includes a swimming pool. The German yard has not released any images of the Terence Disdale interior. Reported to be owned by Manchester City Football Club owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan—Emirati royalty and deputy prime minister of the UAE— A+  is equipped with a 40-foot Vikal catamaran beachlander and is powered by six Wärtsilä engines to reach a top speed of 22 knots. It can carry 62 guests and up to 79 crew and was last refit in 2022.

Prince Abdulaziz | 482 feet, 3 inches

Prince Abdulaziz

The 5,200-tonne Prince Abdulaziz is one of the Saudi Royal family’s yachts, its first owner being King Fahd. Designed by Maierform, the yacht was the longest and tallest in the world at the time of its launch, a title the 482.3-foot  Prince Abdulaziz  held for 22 years until  Dubai  launched in 2006. The late David Nightingale Hicks, known for his use of bright colors, was the interior designer. The lobby is said to be a replica of the Titanic . The yacht is also rumored to be carrying surface-to-air missiles, though that may be an urban legend. Launched by Helsingør Værft in Denmark in 1984, it was last refit in 2023.

OK | 479 feet

Ohima Shipbuilding's OK

Originally built by Japan’s Oshima Shipbuilding in 1982, the semisubmersible heavy lift ship was used for decades by DYT Yacht Transport as float-on yacht carrier. In 2022, the vessel underwent a private conversion at Karmarine shipyard in Turkey, turning it into a luxury, though highly unusual, yacht named OK . Modifications include a matte-black paint job, gold-tinted glazing, and teak decking. The vessel’s 328-foot submersible aft deck—a feature that first attracted her new owner, who uses OK to transport their 150-foot ketch—is now covered in a carpet of artificial grass. A 40-tonne crane allows for the safe and easy launch and retrieval of a vast range of toys, including a seaplane. The interior by Bozca Design is reported to include accommodation for 20 guests, a botanical garden, and a crazy Willy Wonka–inspired glass elevator that operates outside of the yacht’s superstructure.

Opera | 479 feet

Lürssen Yacht Opera

Very little is known about Lürssen’s mysterious superyacht Opera , though it’s thought to be a rebuild of Project Sassi, which was destroyed in a fire in 2018 at the German shipyard. Now four feet longer than the first iteration, the superyacht became the 11th largest yacht in the world when it delivered to its patient owner in 2023. Exterior and interior designed by Terence Disdale, Opera has a whopping 66-foot beam and an interior volume exceeding 10,000GT. No interior images have been released yet, though judging by its two swimming pools, one with a lifting floor, and two helipads—one on the bow and one on the upper aft deck—it seems no expense has been spared.

El Mahrousa | 478 feet, 1 inch

"El Mahrousa" Yacht, Samuda Brothers

El Mahrousa , which means “The Protected” in Arabic, is currently Egypt’s presidential yacht, though the 478.1-footer has a separate history as that country’s royal yacht. The London-based Samuda Brothers began the build in 1863, and it was launched in 1865. The world’s oldest superyacht—and formerly the world’s biggest—was originally built for the Ottoman governor of Egypt, Khedive Ismail, and later carried three Egyptian kings into exile. The yacht was also at the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. It features external design by the British naval architect Sir Oliver Lang and has had multiple modifications over the years, including a lengthening by 40 feet in 1872 and another 17 feet in 1905. During the second refit, the owners replaced its paddle-wheel engines with turbine-driven propellers. The yacht, in care of the Egyptian Navy, occasionally goes to sea for a day or two. In 2015, it was used to inaugurate the new Suez Canal.

Project Luminance | 475 feet, 7 inches

Superyacht Lumaniance

Delivered in 2024, Project Luminance (the real name is yet to be confirmed) is Lürssen’s newest entry on the list. Exterior designed by Espen Øino, the yacht has a raked bow, a contrasting paint job in a dark blue hull and silver superstructure and a whopping 8,999 gross tons of interior volume. Few details are yet known about the gigayacht owned by Ukrainian mining and financial services mogul Rinat Akhmetov, including the interior by Francois Zuretti, but aerial shots reveal twin helicopter pads—one on the foredeck and another high up aft—a large beach club, and an infinity pool, with a private spa pool area on the foredeck.

A | 468 feet, 5 inches

Nobiskrug sailing yacht A.

Undoubtedly one of the most visionary projects ever delivered by German shipyard Nobiskrug, the Philippe Starck-designed A is a wild fantasy of the future. Delivered in 2017, the futuristic look of  sailing yacht  A includes smooth, silver-metallic surfaces and windows that look nearly invisible, a 26-foot draft, three composite masts that bend slightly, and a deck hidden by high bulwarks. The Philippe Starck–design is a wild fantasy yacht of the future. The 468-foot sailing yacht is a technical victory for Nobiskrug , which developed composite fashion plates to create the unusual shapes without compromising any strength or fluidity. It has the tallest freestanding composite masts on any sailing vessel, a diesel-electric propulsion system, and state-of-the-art navigation systems. The boat also reportedly has an underwater viewing platform in the keel. Starck’s traditional interior features dark wood, copper accents, and cozy patterned carpets. The split-deck main salon is divided into zoned seating areas with integrated bookshelves. A remains today the world’s largest sailing yacht six years after its launch, though many argue it is better defined as a sail-assisted yacht.

Nord | 466 feet

Lürssen OPUS Launch

Nord was announced in 2015 but didn’t hit the water until its 2020 sea trials in the Baltic Sea. The 466-foot yacht features interior design by Italian studio Nuvolari Lenard and was Lürssen’s first yacht launched from its floating shed at its facility in Vegasack. Boasting top-tier amenities, the yacht includes a sports and diving center on the lower deck, multiple tenders ranging in size up to 50 feet and a large swimming pool. The two helipads support the yacht’s long-range cruising capabilities for autonomous exploration, and a retractable hangar means a helicopter can slide neatly into the superstructure for storage when not in use. A generous 20 staterooms accommodate 36 guests across six decks, while a sleek aft-sloping superstructure gives Nord an individual profile on the water.

Yas | 462 feet, 6 inches

Superyacht Yas in Barcelona

As a converted yacht, Yas is one of the most interesting vessels on this list. The dolphin-like exterior was originally a former Dutch Navy frigate that launched in 1978 and eventually sold to the navy of the United Arab Emirates, where it was renamed Al Emirat . The yacht underwent its dramatic conversion in a facility in Abu Dhabi’s main port, emerging as a gleaming superyacht in 2011, with one of the most interesting profiles on the water. It was eventually delivered four years later. Reportedly owned by Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed al Nahyan, half-brother of the president of the UAE, Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the design by Paris-based Pierrejean Vision is defined by massive glass surfaces. Yas can accommodate 60 guests and 58 crew members. Mated to a steel hull, the superstructure is the largest composite edifice ever built.

Solaris | 459 feet, 3 inches

Russian oligarchs yachts continued to be seized

Owned by Russian businessman Roman Abramovich, the 476-foot  Solaris  was one of the largest yachts to deliver in 2021. Last refit in 2022 at MB92 in Barcelona, the vast, highly private explorer is built by German shipyard Lloyd Werft and features a displacement steel hull with bulbous bow and steel superstructure with teak decks. The eight-deck exterior by Australian designer Marc Newson houses a large helipad, sundeck, spacious beach club aft and 21,527 square feet of glass, the largest panes to ever be built into a yacht. Lloyd Werft also built the Russian billionaire’s previous explorer yacht Luna , which he reportedly sold for $360 million to his close friend Farkhad Akhmedov in 2014.

Ocean Victory | 459 feet, 3 inches

The largest motoryacht ever built in Italy, Fincantieri’s Ocean Victory is owned by Russian billionaire Viktor Rashnikov, who was sanctioned in 2022. The seven-deck exterior by Espen Øino includes two helideck platforms and a hangar belowdecks, as well as exceptional outdoor social areas and a floodable tender dock. Ocean Victory has accommodations for 28 guests as well as quarters for 56 crew. The interior by Alberto Pinto remains a secret, aside from the yacht’s six pools, a 3,300-square-foot spa, and an underwater observation room.

Scheherazade | 459 feet, 3 inches

Russian oligarchs yachts continued to be seized

The 459.3-foot, Lürssen-built Scheherazade (formerly known as Project Lightning) was delivered in June 2020, with exterior design by Espen Øino and interior design by Francois Zuretti. Two helipads, forward and aft, and a large beach club aft are visible from aerial photographs, but aside from the yacht’s reported seven-foot beam, 40 crew and unique drone-crashing system for privacy, further details have not yet been released. The reason may lie with the yacht’s unofficial owner, believed to be Russian president Vladimir Putin. In May 2022, Italian authorities froze Scheherazade in the port of Marina di Carrara following an investigation conducted by Italian financial police who found the ship’s beneficial owner had “significant economic and business ties” to high-ranking Russian government officials, though the results of the investigation to date remain inconclusive.

Al Salamah | 456 feet

When Lürssen launched Al Salamah in 1999, it was the third-largest yacht in the world. Its number 20 ranking shows how much has changed in the last 20 years. Code-named MIPOS, or Mission Possible, the yacht was designed by Terence Disdale . Originally owned by Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz, the yacht was put up for sale for $280 million in in 2013 before it was reportedly given to Bahraini Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa as a gift. The large imposing exterior is primarily protected space, with an upper deck exposed to the elements. Al Salamah has staterooms for 40 guests, including two owner suites, 11 VIP staterooms, and eight twin cabins. The yacht can carry up to 96 crew and has a top speed of 22 knots. Al Salamah was last refitted in 2009.

Rising Sun | 454 feet, 1 inch

Lürssen Rising Sun superyacht

Designed by the original guru of yacht designers, Jon Bannenberg, Rising Sun was built by Lürssen for Oracle CEO Larry Ellison and is currently owned by billionaire David Geffen, who reportedly paid $590 million for the yacht. The yacht comes with a gym, a grand piano, multiple swimming pools, a beauty salon, and a spa with a sauna. Delivered in 2004 and last refit in 2022, the yacht’s exterior is defined by banks of windows across the superstructure. Rising Sun has 86,000 square feet of living space in 82 rooms. It can accommodate 18 guests in nine cabins, with the capacity to carry up to 46 crew. The interior by Seccombe Design includes a gym, cinema, and wine cellar, and the rear cockpit deck was designed as a basketball court. Geffen received global media backlash in 2020 for his “tone deaf” social-media posts that pictured himself on board his yacht during Covid-19 lockdown.

Flying Fox | 446 feet, 2 inches

The 446.2-foot  Flying Fox is arguably the most high-profile yacht on this list, primarily for being the largest yacht available on the charter market. In 2022, it was also singled out as “blocked property” by U.S. authorities in 2022 due to its previous management Imperials Yachts, which was on the US sanctions list. The yacht’s owner, however, Russian billionaire Dmitry Kamenshchik, is not sanctioned, so the yacht was turned over to him and returned to charter in 2024. Key features of the Espen Øino-designed exterior are a curvaceous dove-gray hull and a 3.7-foot swimming pool that runs athwartship on the main aft deck, the largest ever found on board a yacht. A two-decked spa also gives guests access to a cryosauna, hammam, and relaxation room with a fold-down balcony at sea level. Packed to the rafters with the latest amenities, the yacht holds a diving center, a decompression chamber, and two helipads. Flying Fox is PYC compliant and can accommodate 25 guests.

Savarona | 446 feet, 2 inches

Launched in 1931, and by far the largest and fastest private yacht of her day, Savarona was built for American heiress Emily Roebling Cadwalader and is easily identified by its two mustard-colored funnels. The yacht was eventually acquired by Turkey to be the presidential yacht of Kemal Atatürk, founder of modern Turkey. Jane’s Fighting Ships described the yacht in 1949 as “probably the most sumptuously fitted yacht afloat.”  Savarona was later converted to a training ship for the Turkish Navy and, in 1978, destroyed by fire. The yacht laid in tatters for 10 years. A Turkish businessman spent around $45 million refurbishing Savarona , commissioning Donald Starkey for the interior and replacing the original steam-turbine engines with modern Caterpillar diesels. Savarona became Turkey’s official presidential yacht again in 2014, accommodating up to 34 guests in 17 suites and carrying up to 48 crew. Amenities include a swimming pool, a Turkish bath, a 280-foot grand staircase, a movie theater and a library dedicated to Atatürk.

Last refit in 2021, Espen Øino’s dark hull and tiered superstructure was one of the most exciting launches of 2018. Called Project Thunder internally at Lürssen, the custom-built yacht features cutouts along the hull sides that allow full ocean views from the saloon on the primary deck, as part of Crescent ’s distinctive curved superstructure. Its most noteworthy feature is the jaw-dropping bank of three-deck-high windows in the center of the yacht. This architectural feature serves as the centerpiece of a very compelling design. The yacht has accommodations for 18 guests in nine staterooms. Little is known about the François Zuretti-designed interior, other than Lürssen describing it as being “traditionally styled.” If it lives up to Crescent ’s brash exterior, the complete yacht promises to be an entirely groundbreaking design. In March 2022, Crescent was detained by Spain as property of Rosneft CEO Igor Sechin, who is sanctioned in connection with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Serene  is the yacht that launched Fincantieri into the superyacht segment, and what a debut it was. The largest yacht ever launched in Italy when it was delivered in 2011 (surpassed three years later by Ocean Victory ), the Espen Øino seven-deck design features a long, sleek blue hull crowned by a white superstructure. Pascale Reymond of Reymond Langton Design created the 43,056-square-foot interior for a Russian owner, which includes a double height atrium with a piano lounge at the top and a vast open-plan main salon below. Sunken LEDs and bright pink and purple neon lights create a modern party vibe in the social areas, which contrast with the elaborate yet more traditional guest suites. A spiral staircase with intricate metal banisters soars through the heart of the yacht. The open stern area has a winter garden (enclosed glasshouse) that allows dining in all seasons. Serene also has two helipads and a hangar, a big swimming pool, and a tender garage large enough for a submarine.

The Largest Superyachts Launched So Far in 2023

In the lead up to the yacht show season, it is only fitting to take a look at the largest, most impressive launches of 2023 so far. From complex refits, to technically advanced, future-proof new builds, we take a look at the five largest launches of the year so far, according to Superyachts.com's Top 100 list of the largest yachts in the world.

145m - LUMINANCE

Builder: Lürssen

A highly anticipated project, LUMINANCE was launched in February this year; Lürssen’s eighth largest build and ranking as the 12th largest yacht in the world. Her details were kept tightly under wraps, contributing to her alluring nature, but it has been revealed that the exterior design is the work of Espen Øino , marking the thirtieth collaboration between the designer and shipyard. She is said to have an internal volume of 9,000 GT and a beam of 20 metres, whilst sporting a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. 

According to Superyachts.com's Top 100 list, LUMINANCE ranks at 12th largest yacht in the world. 

114m - Project Cosmos 

In March, Lürssen’s 114.2m Project Cosmos was technically launched. Otherwise known as Project 13759, this is the first time that she was seen. Like LUMINANCE, very little has been revealed about her details, aside from her having an interior volume of around 6300GT, a beam of 18m, and a steel hull and an aluminium superstructure. Project Cosmos is the first Lürssen superyacht to feature new fuel cell technology, significantly reducing emissions by avoiding greenhouse gases. 

From her technical launch, we can see that Project Cosmos has a large aft deck and swimming pool, as well as a cut-out that we can presume will house a tender. She is a highly impressive build, ranking as the 44th largest yacht in the world according to our Top 100 listings. 

105m - 1050H

Builder: Oceanco

On the 10th of January 2023, one of the industry’s most closely-kept secrets was brought to light as Oceanco’s Project 1050H was launched. Neither a newbuild, refit, or conversion, this has been a fundamental rebuild of unprecedented scale, completely transforming a heritage superyacht.

Project 1050H is the first vessel that has been recreated to such an extent that no single element remains the same. This launch set the benchmark of future innovation in the industry: a future-proof vessel that is a testament to Oceanco’s desire to perfect even the most complex builds. She has a modern exterior aesthetic, with a completely new superstructure, with a fresh interior designed by Reymond Langton Design. 

As well as being impressive aesthetically, her performance, technology and sustainable nature are all elements to be equally marvelled at. She is fully compliant with rigorous IMO Tier III standards alongside upgraded technological capabilities. 

The launch of 1050H was certainly a celebrated start to 2023, whilst also ranking 63rd on our Top 100 list. 

90m - Project 1601

Soon after LUMINANCE emerged from Lürssen’s Bremen facility, 90m Project 1601 was launched. Like LUMINANCE, her construction was kept very secretive, but her emergence  from the shipyard revealed a unique exterior profile, with prominent lines and a striking reverse bow design.

Espen Øeino is responsible for the exterior design, alongside the in-house team at Lürssen overseeing the naval architecture. Dölker & Voges Design have crafted the interior spaces, which are yet to be revealed. 

84m - Project 710

Builder: Feadship

On the 20th April, Feadship’s 80m Project 710 was launched. She has earnt the honour of being one of Feadship’s most technically advanced and dynamic designs, so her launch sparked nothing but excitement.

As well as being aesthetically beautiful, with a low profile, horizontal styling features and clean shapes, she is also the perfect next step in Feadship’s path towards achieving the build of zero-emission superyachts by 2030, with an expected 90% reduction of total CO2 emissions. She is the perfect vessel for relaxation as well as entertaining, with an Aqua Lounge with massive windows below water level allowing for connection with the outdoors, as well as the ability to accommodate up to 14 people, making her just as sociable as she is stunning.

And despite their scarcity, these billionaires are surprisingly easy to find . After all, birds of a feather — especially those of a small brood — flock their private jets together. At the start of the year, they descend en masse on Davos. In July, they fly to Sun Valley before, every four years, making their way to the summer Olympics . In December, their yachts anchor in St. Barts.

Here's where billionaires mingle, wheel and deal, and relax, and how you can join them — for a small price, of course.

January: Davos

After billionaires shake off their New Year's Eve hangovers, many make their way to Switzerland for the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos to attend lavish dinners, hit the slopes, and discuss the global problem du jour.

The official event is invite-only and costs tens of thousands per ticket. But those who want to rub shoulders with attendees — think Bill Gates, Marc Benioff, and Mark Zuckerberg — aren't completely barred from the Alpine resort.

Many of Davos' luxury hotels , like the Steigenberger Grandhotel Belvédère and AlpenGold, are closed to the public, so you'd be better off renting an apartment. Those don't come cheap, though. Local outlets reported that rentals went for 10-times their typical prices last year. One apartment with two double beds and a pull-out sofa cost nearly $27,500 to rent for the five nights of the conference.

And good luck finding food. With most of the restaurants booked up for conference events, you may be left paying $43 for a hot dog.

February: Super Bowl

NFL teams are among the most popular toys of the ultrarich : Walmart's Rob Walton has the Broncos, hedge fund manager David Tepper owns the Panthers, real estate tycoon Stanley Kroenke boasts the Rams, Jerry Jones controls the Cowboys, and so on.

So it's no surprise that a number of billionaires flock to the sport's biggest game every year, though Super Bowl weekend as a billionaire involves more than just wings and great commercials.

Host committees and travel agencies have curated luxury experiences for the richest football fans that cost six figures and include chartered jets, five-star accommodations, and access to the field after the game. Suites for this season's game in Las Vegas are going for up to $3 million on rental platform Suite Luxury Group .

There are also the private parties, known for their superstar performers — in some cases, ones particularly familiar with billionaires. Last year, DJ D-Sol, also known as Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon, reportedly spun a set at a party attended by billionaires like Jeff Bezos and Apollo cofounder Josh Harris.

March: Hong Kong's Art Basel

Last year marked the grand reopening of Hong Kong's Art Basel after a three-year coronavirus hiatus. Wealthy Chinese carpooled together in private jets to the fair, Bloomberg reported, and spent millions adding to their collections.

In a savvy scheduling maneuver, the 2023 art fair coincided with the Wealth for Good summit. The conference, a push to get more family offices to set up in the city, counted billionaires like Yahoo cofounder Jerry Yang, Sequoia Capital China's Neil Shen, and local real estate magnate Adam Kwok as its attendees.

Artsy clocked more than a dozen seven-figure sales at the art fair, including work like George Condo's "Purple Compression" and Kazuo Shiraga's "Kisan," which sold for $4.75 million and $5 million, respectively. One of the fair's most famous sale's came in 2018, when Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen sold Willem de Kooning's "Untitled XII, 1975" for $35 million to a private collector.

April: The Masters Tournament

Forget Easter. The first signs of spring mean one thing for billionaires: golf.

Each year, the Masters Tournament kicks off the run of major professional golf championships at Augusta National. The famously exclusive club in Georgia — it didn't allow women to join until 2012 — counts a number of billionaires as members.

Pals Warren Buffett and Bill Gates, as well as Warren Stephens, David Ziff, and Stanley Druckenmiller, belong to the club, Bloomberg reported in 2015.

Each year, hundreds of private aircraft land at the airports around Augusta , according to information from the aircraft-tracking website JetSpy .

Billionaires like former Nike CEO Phil Knight, hotelier Robert Rowling, and investor Herbert Allen Jr. all had planes touch down for last year's tournament, according to the Jetspy data. So did Tiger Woods — the only billionaire winner of The Masters.

His victory means he is the proud owner of one of Augusta National's iconic green jackets, which are only allotted to members and Masters winners.

The secretive club hasn't ever spelled out its membership process, but it's invite-only, and new members can only join when existing ones leave.

You can, though, spectate alongside some of the biggest names in business. Tickets for the Masters are available through a lottery system — or for as much as $10,000 on the secondary market.

May: The Cannes Film Festival

Summer starts early for billionaires, who dock their yachts for the Cannes Film Festival at the end of May. While the event is technically reserved for industry professionals, per its website, the super-rich can, of course, pay to play. For them, the fete is as much an opportunity to get a first look at Oscar winners as it is an opportunity to mingle with stars on the Croisette.

It was one of the first stops on Jeff Bezos' 2023 grand debut tour of his $500 million superyacht Koru , which he disembarked to hit up the Vanity Fair party at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc, a favorite venue of the very wealthy and those who court them. Other guests included A-listers Robert de Niro, Naomi Campbell, and Pedro Almodovar. In years past, the likes of David Geffen and Len Blavatnik have turned up at the same event.

Billionaires like François-Henri Pinault and the late Paul Allen have hosted their own parties at the film festival: The former throws the Kering Women in Motion Dinner each year, while the latter was known for his themed yacht parties .

June: The Royal Ascot

While a number of billionaires spend June in the Hamptons or crisscrossing the Mediterranean , some prefer to spend it on dryer land. The headline billionaires at the Royal Ascot — an annual horse race held about 25 miles outside London — are, unsurprisingly, the members of the British royal family.

But many other members of the three comma club, and their hats, are in attendance. The rich crowd is different from the one at a typical F1 Grand Prix , and some billionaire horse owners — like Chanel's Alain and Gerard Wertheimer; the shipping scions of the Niarchos family; Tetra Pak heiress Kirsten Rausing; and construction magnate Anthony Bamford — have even had skin in the game .

For over 200 years, the Royal Ascot has been open to the public — about 300,000 people attend the five-day event — but don't expect to get anywhere near the rich and famous. Joining the Royal Enclosure requires a special application process, including having two sponsors. Plus, there's a strict dress code — no spaghetti straps or bow ties allowed — and kids under 10 years old are not allowed.

July: Allen & Company Sun Valley Conference

Every July, private jets descend on the small town of Hailey, Idaho, for the summer counterpart to Davos: the Allen & Company Sun Valley Conference — also known as billionaire summer camp.

Since 1983, boutique investment bank Allen & Co — its president, Herbert Allen, is a billionaire himself — has hosted the event, which attracts the biggest and richest names in business, including Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Warren Buffett, and Rupert Murdoch.

Private planes touch down in the small town of Sun Valley for the conference, which has become known for the deals struck in between rounds of golf, guided hikes, whitewater rafting, and tennis matches. It's where Jeff Bezos snagged The Washington Post for $250 million in 2013 and where the seed for Disney's $19 billion acquisition of ABC was planted in 1995.

This year's hot topics included the planned sale of Paramount to Skydance — with Shari Redstone making a grand entrance — artificial intelligence, and the 2024 election.

The vacation-cum-business-meeting is invite-only and pretty much restricted to masters of the universe dressed in vests and quarter-zips — as well as their entourages. Security is strict, with even the press walled off from most of the wheeling and dealing.

But when the conference is not in session, you, too, can stay at the Sun Valley Lodge , the homebase of the retreat that offers a year-round ice skating rink, luxe spa, and pool with a view of the mountains. The most basic rooms cost upwards of $500 a night over the summer, and suites go for upwards of $1,500. But don't feel too bad for the billionaires, Allen & Co foots the bill.

August: Burning Man

On its face, Burning Man — the anticapitalist art and music festival in the Nevada desert — doesn't really seem like an event for billionaires. But the richest people in the world don't seem to care about whether or not they're wanted.

Since the 1990s, attending Burning Man has become a sort of status symbol of the tech elite. Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page are longtime Burners — the festival inspired the very first Google Doodle — as is Eric Schmidt, who they chose to be Google's CEO.

Facebook cofounders Dustin Moskowitz and Mark Zuckerberg, and Uber cofounder Garrett Camp have also attended. Even Ray Dalio, the billionaire hedge fund manager, wanted to see what all the hype was about, sporting some psychedelic bell bottoms and joining the party in 2019.

While ticket sales were down this year — the event did not sell out for the first time since 2011 — the uber-rich are still attending. Hundreds of private planes descended onto Black Rock City's temporary runway during the first days of the festival. The starting price to charter a plane through Burner Express Air is $9,000, one way.

The experiences of many celebrities and billionaires on the Playa lean less into the "decommodification" and "leave no trace" principles of the festival and more into the "immediacy" one — as in instant gratification. They travel around in tricked-out art cars (basically fancy golf carts) and forego rustic tents for more fancy camps, complete with furniture, air conditioning, and personal chefs who charge six figures for their services.

All of this may be why there was a hefty dose of schadenfreude when Burning Man went underwater , quite literally.

September: The Monaco Yacht Show

There are yachts, and then there are the superyachts — and those are aplenty at the Monaco Yacht Show in Monte Carlo, where billionaires gather at the end of the summer to scope out their new toys. (There are also, technically, megayachts, but for plebeian purposes, they are one and the same.)

The 100-plus boats on display have an average length of 165 feet, and feature elevators, bars, spas, pools, gyms, hot tubs, and helipads — sometimes more than one. Jet skis and submersibles are popular add-ons.

In the past, yachts owned by billionaires like Paul Allen, Steve Wynn, and Pier Luigi Loro Piana have been exhibited at the show — with some available for sale or to charter. The event also used to be a favorite of opulent Russian oligarchs, though sanctions have prevented them from attending for the past couple of years.

This year's show includes the 73-meter yacht Planet Nine, which was featured in Christopher Nolan's "Tenet" and is on sale for nearly $86 million. Making her debut is Kismet, the yacht owned by the billionaire Shahid Khan, the owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars. She is available to charter for a starting price of $3.36 million a week.

If you're looking to peruse boats that you can't afford — or maybe meet a billionaire who will invite you on theirs — you're in luck: The Monaco Yacht Show is open to the public for the small price of 600 Euros, or $640, a day.

October: The Frieze Art Fair

The Frieze Art Fair, held annually in London, draws the rich — and the staff of the rich — from around the world looking to add very expensive contemporary art to their collections. (For those who prefer pre 21st century art, there's the nearby Frieze Masters.)

In years past, collectors like Point72's Steve Cohen , Diamond titan Laurence Graff, and the wife of hedge fund legend Louis Bacon, Gabrielle, have all been spotted. While exactly which works these patrons have bought tend to be kept under wraps, pieces go for millions of dollars each year.

While anyone can buy tickets to the fair itself — this year for as low as £46, or $57 — the fetes surrounding Frieze Week are a more surefire place to spot a billionaire — or their younger, edgier heirs. A look at party snaps from the last few years show Gordon Getty's granddaughter Ivy Getty, Cohen's daughter Sophia, and Roger Penske's granddaughter Sophia mingling with art-world celebrities, and possibly looking for some six-figure works of art to add to their starter collections.

November: Le Bal des Débutantes

Le Bal des Débutantes continues the centuries-long tradition of rich, famous women reminding society that they are, well, rich and famous.

The ball is invite-only, and no one, not even billionaires, can buy their way in — at least that's what Ophélie Renouard, the founder of the ball's current iteration, told Insider. Renouard handpicks the cohort of about 20 women each year, who go to Paris for a weekend of photoshoots, makeup and hair appointments, and traditional waltzes.

Past debutantes have included royalty like Princess Hélène of Orléans and Princess Akshita Bhanj Deo; children of Hollywood elite like Forest Whitaker's daughters Autumn and True, and Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillipe's daughter Ava; and, of course, the heiresses of billion dollar fortunes like Araminta Mellon, Kayla Rockefeller, Laila Blavatnik, and Amanda Hearst, usually with their very wealthy and very powerful parents in tow.

As is often the case for the rich — and rich nepo babies, in particular — things come free: The weekend's dance lessons, couture gowns, glam squads, and jewels are paid for by sponsors.

December: New Year in St. Barts

Billionaires ring in the New Year seemingly anywhere but at home. And while Aspen and Maldives are popular choices for the wintering elite, there is perhaps nowhere with more billionaires-per-square foot during the holidays than St. Barts.

In years past, the Caribbean island, formally Saint-Barthélemy, has attracted yachts owned by the likes of David Geffen, Barry Diller and Diane von Furstenberg, and Bernard Arnault for year-end festivities.

Unfortunately for the poor rich, one of the most infamous St. Barts New Year's parties will be canceled this year. Roman Abramovich — the former Chelsea FC owner, sanctioned Russian billionaire, and unlikely hero of St. Barts — will not be hosting his multi-million dollar extravaganza, which has featured performances from Prince and Beyoncé; millions worth of food and alcohol; and guests like Orlando Bloom and Rupert Murdoch.

Guess they'll have to buy tickets to Nikki Beach's party like the rest of us.

The largest Yacht Club in the fleet is on MSC World Europa, offering 152 suites. The second-largest is found on the line's two Seaside EVO Class ships, MSC Seashore and MSC Seascape, which each have 131 suites.

All accommodations in the Yacht Club are labeled as suites, even though they comprise some standard cabin types. The specific stateroom types offered will vary by ship, but in general, they range from windowless interior cabins and deluxe balcony rooms to Executive and Royal Suites with more space, walk-in closets and bathrooms with both showers and bathtubs.

New to the fleet with the line's World Class are 1,600-square-foot Owner Suites, which include multi-room layouts, walk-in closets, bathtubs and balconies, each with a whirlpool and alfresco dining area.

Also new are Duplex Suites, offering two decks of space, with the bedroom and bathroom upstairs and a dining area, living room and guest bath downstairs. These also include two private sun decks with loungers, one of which boasts a whirlpool.

How much does it cost to stay in the MSC Yacht Club?

As you might expect, the cost to stay in the Yacht Club depends on several factors, including cabin type, the length of the sailing and where you're going and when. However, in line with the rest of the brand's pricing, a stay in the Yacht Club is an excellent value when you compare it to stays in other lines' dedicated suite areas or to luxury cruise prices.

I priced out several sailings departing over the next two years on some of the line's newest and largest ships. This is what was available at press time. (Note: MSC Cruises' website will only allow me to choose a general Yacht Club designation when booking. That means a guaranteed suite within the Yacht Club, but you won't know what type it is until closer to sailing.)

MOTOR YACHT OF THE YEAR: KENSHŌ

In selecting the winner of the coveted Motor Yacht of the Year award, our judges were faced with the unenviable task of choosing a single yacht from among the eight individual winners of the Semi-Displacement and Displacement Motor Yacht classes. Making this choice is not just a matter of choosing the largest yacht, nor the yacht that won its class by the greatest margin, as the judges are also required to consider how each of these vessels might have advanced the design, construction and appearance of future generations of yachts. After lengthy debate, the secret ballot revealed Kenshō – Japanese for “seeing one’s true nature” - to be the winner by a healthy margin, and while many factors influenced this decision, it was her owner-driven attributes that tipped the scales. In his bid to create a vessel that stood out from the crowd, the owner visited around 100 of the world’s landmark yachts, listing attributes that he particularly admired. High deckheads, calming room volumes, minimal side decks, and no main saloon were high on the resulting list presented to his designers, Netherlands-based Azure, and Germany-based archineers.berlin, who took on responsibility for naval architecture and exterior design. Parisian design studio Jouin Manku, meanwhile, created her stunning interior from a palette of soft natural tones in leather, teak, metal and glass. Added to her more visual attributes, Kenshō ’s diesel-electric propulsion system with twin Veth azimuth drives, driven by Danfoss electric motors that draw their exact power needs from five variable-speed generators, was the icing on the cake for this splendid yacht, which certainly stands out from the crowd while reflecting the “true nature” of her owner.

SAILING YACHT OF THE YEAR: ALEA

The title of Sailing Yacht of the Year is awarded to the yacht that is considered by the judges to be the most notable of the class winners in two sailing yacht categories. Selecting the winner is not a matter of merely choosing the yacht that won its class by the greatest margin, as the judges are required to consider all the other elements that led to their being chosen as class winners. Both yachts were conceived as fast cruisers and, as both their owners invested a great deal of thought and experience into their designs, choosing the winner was a difficult task for the judges. Following lengthy discussion they decided that the Frers-designed 56-metre Alea , built to impeccable standards by Vitters, should receive this prestigious award. As is usual, their decision was based on a wide-ranging study encompassing all aspects of this yacht in relation to her owner’s specific requests. In Alea ’s case, her owner wished to circumnavigate the world in speed and comfort, and to fulfil this ambition Frers created a powerful, sleek hull form with a distinctive reverse bow to increase waterline length and speed, that would sail with comfortably low angles of heel. Other important needs were for safely uncluttered decks, 360-degree views in the communal living areas and a sizeable beach club, all of which were admirably incorporated into Alea ’s sleek and attractive profile. The judges particularly admired the manner in which the floor of the deck saloon and the adjoining cockpit are on the same level, set just over a metre below deck level to lower the profile of the deckhouse, while also offering the cockpit significant protection from wind and weather.

REBUILT YACHTS: MARALA

First, a word of explanation about this class: all yachts are entered into the Refit/Rebuild category, and the jury, having reviewed the photographs and read the statements submitted with each entry, decide whether the degree of work justifies it as a refit or a rebuild. If a meaningful amount of metal has been replaced, along with significant renewal of the interior and in technical areas, this generally leads to the yacht being placed in the Rebuild class. Of the yachts having undergone such extensive work, the jury unanimously decided that the standout winner was Marala , a classic motor yacht built by Camper & Nicholsons in 1931 and which has had just four owners during her 92-year lifespan. She had been rebuilt over two and a half years at Pendennis Shipyard in Falmouth, where the emphasis was on stripping back the additions made during her lifetime to reinvigorate her original spirit. The owner’s cabin is a nod to his admiration for the liner Normandie , while others pay homage to the Palace of Savoy and Japanese-influenced art deco, while another adds a sophisticated salute to the vessel’s days in military service. To quote her interior designers: “We knew we already had a diamond – it has been a case of polishing it to reveal its brilliance.” The rebuild saw the replacement of more than 100 tonnes of steel, predominantly in the hull, which was left unfaired to provide an authentic appearance. Stability was improved, all services including HVAC, piping, ducting and cabling were replaced, main engines and auxiliary generators were fully rebuilt and her emergency generator was replaced with a battery system. The judges felt that a yachting treasure had been saved by a meticulous period-conscious rebuild and this made her a worthy winner.

REFITTED YACHTS: ATHOS

As mentioned on the previous page, for this class, all yachts are entered into the Refit/Rebuild category, and having reviewed the photographs and read the statements submitted with each entry, the jury decides whether the degree of work justifies it being a refit or a rebuild. In general terms, if the work is commensurate with a five- to 10-year refit, without significant metal being cut, the yacht is usually judged in the Refit category. Among the many interesting entries, it was the 63.25-metre schooner Athos that caught the judges’ eyes. In choosing the ideal yacht for a world cruise, her owner had been drawn by the yacht’s elegant lines, the excellent “close to the water” sailing experience that she provides, and the fact that she had originally been designed with all the necessary attributes for a circumnavigation. This led to the owner taking the extraordinary step of chartering the vessel for a year in order to “get the feel of her” before committing to purchase, a time in which he defined the necessary works to fully customise her for his circumnavigation. Following her acquisition, Athos was placed in the hands of Royal Huisman’s Huisfit yard in Amsterdam – the home of her now-defunct original builders, Holland Jachtbouw – for almost a year under the design supervision of Andre Hoek, her original naval architect. Among the mass of work carried out, her stern was slightly extended to provide the owner with a larger cockpit adjoining his cabin, and the navigation station repositioned to a new deckhouse just aft of the foremast. She was also given new booms, new sails and lightweight carbon-fibre rigging. The quality and practicality of the work so impressed the judges that they had little hesitation in selecting her as the winner.

SAILING YACHTS, 30M TO 49.9M: SØRVIND

Two yachts were built in the qualifying period for this class. One was designed to provide its owner with a combination of seagoing comfort and excellent sailing performance, and the other a classic-inspired bluewater cruiser. A closer examination of specifications, photographs and plans was followed by further discussion that focused the spotlight on the 34.59-metre Sørvind , a yacht that was beautifully constructed and multifunctional. The secret ballot that followed confirmed that this yacht, built in Cape Town, South Africa by Southern Wind to a design by naval architects Farr Yacht Design, with exterior and interior design by the Milan-based Nauta Design, took the prize. The owner, a keen sailor from a young age, told us in his statement submitted for the judges’ dossier, that he had wanted a “high-performance yacht for fast and comfortable sailing that embodies a ‘Nordic Cool’ spirit, while also designed for success on the charter market”, and the judges felt that he had received exactly this. In creating Sørvind , her builders had optimised this, their fifth SW105 model, developing a special assembly process between her full-carbon hull, deck and bulkheads, while her environmentally friendly synthetic teak decks were paired with titanium stanchions to reduce her weight to an impressive 69,500kg, thus giving her the ability to sail in the lightest of wind conditions. The judges also considered that her bright and light Scandi-style interior decoration combined with a highly practical GA plan – which places the master cabin and a double forward of the saloon, and two twin cabins and the crew accommodation, navigation and technical areas aft - perfectly met her owner’s needs. 

SAILING YACHTS, 50M AND ABOVE: ALEA

The larger Sailing Yacht class contained just one vessel whose size was such that the judges considered it to be difficult, if not unfair, to compare it with the two significantly smaller sailing yachts, whose similar size suggested that they should be judged in a class of their own. It might seem that classes with just one yacht entered hardly require a judging process but, to ensure that unworthy yachts are not celebrated, precedent requires the judges to decide - based on their past experience - whether the vessel in question, in this case the 56-metre Alea built by Vitters is of sufficient quality to win its class against similar-sized winners in former years. Following a thorough review of the material submitted in support of Alea ’s entry, the judges unanimously approved that she should be awarded a Neptune. Alea is a long-range bluewater cruising sloop conceived for an owner who had requested a light displacement vessel that would perform well in both low and high winds. An extensive engineering study in conjunction with Frers Design led to an aluminium-hulled yacht whose lifting keel reduces her draught from 6.95 metres to 3.5 metres, thus allowing access to shallower harbours. On deck, she is clean and hazard free, with all sheets and halyards led below to captive winches, and her otherwise flush layout is broken only by a low deckhouse and coachroof-shaded cockpit amidships, and a raised entry to the crew and navigation areas aft. Her interior is a picture of comfortable minimalist elegance, the deck saloon giving access forward to the master and two guest cabins, while three further guest cabins and the crew areas open aft. Beautifully built in every respect, she is a most worthy winner.

JUDGES’ COMMENDATION: MELODY

For 20 years, the owner of Melody had dreamed of building a state-of-the-art sailing yacht in which to make a safe and comfortable round-the-world voyage. When he came across the Zaca series of classically inspired designs created by renowned Dutch naval architect Olivier van Meer, he knew his search was over. This led to the commissioning of the Zaca 115 design which, built by Ridas Yacht & Composites in Estonia, became the 41.5-metre ketch Melody . Ridas had made its name in the construction of much smaller, composite vessels of extremely high quality, so the request to build an aluminium-hulled sailing superyacht of this size classed to Lloyd’s +100A1 presented the yard’s 25-strong workforce with a real test, but they rose to this challenge. The judges were impressed with the high quality of construction and finish, along with the sophisticated onboard technical systems, such as the Böning monitoring equipment that makes it possible to remotely monitor all of the yacht’s technical aspects. The judges found it difficult to compare this classic vessel with her more modern rival in the class, but were so impressed with her builder’s achievement that they voted to award a Judges’ Commendation.

SEMI-DISPLACEMENT OR PLANING MOTOR YACHTS, 30M TO 34.9M: BLUE JEANS

All five yachts in this class were of very similar size, and while this made detailed comparison easier, the unvarying high quality of the entries and their disparate characteristics still made the task of choosing the winner difficult for the judges. The nominees’ performances ranged from an extremely fast 51 knots to a more sedate 26 knots, while advanced composites vied with aluminium and GRP for hull material, and water-jet propulsion jousted with conventional propellers. During discussion it was the less extreme vessels that drew the attention of the majority of the judges, with the fully customised 33.74-metre Blue Jeans , built by Van der Valk Shipyard, being the focus of much of their attention. Their admiration of this vessel was confirmed after the secret ballot, which she won by a significant margin. The judges admired her striking appearance, her comfortable cruising speed of 25 knots, her spacious maintenance-friendly engine room, high- quality build and her optimum layout. The owner had asked Van der Valk for a fast vessel with a high level of seaworthiness, stability and manoeuvrability and challenged the yard to surprise him with what they could do. To meet the owner’s performance needs, naval architects Diana Yacht Design drew a semi-displacement hull with large propellers positioned in tunnels to increase efficiency and decrease draught. Her interior by Guido de Groot Design, who also drew her exterior lines, was laid out in the classic manner with the master cabin well aft on the lower deck where movement is at a minimum, and a formal dining room forward on the main deck. Blue Jeans , the judges considered, is a very pleasant all-rounder that certainly met the owner’s challenge.

SEMI-DISPLACEMENT OR PLANING MOTOR YACHTS, 35M TO 41.9M: RUSH

Comprising four similar-sized vessels that were otherwise quite different in their construction materials and performance, this was a tough class for the judges. Their discussion was long and wide-ranging, and after every aspect of the yachts had been considered in detail there was no clear consensus of which might come out on top. But even though the results revealed that the voting was indeed close, the outcome of the secret ballot was clear in that the aluminium-hulled 41.7-metre Rush , with naval architecture and build by Baglietto and exterior styling and interior design from the board of Francesco Paszkowski, the latter in collaboration with Margherita Casprini, led the field. She was the largest and also the fastest yacht in this class, topping out at 29 knots powered by three MTU 1,939kW diesels; the flank engines driving fixed-pitch propellers, while the central unit powering a Voith Linear Jet drive. At her fast cruising speed of 24 knots, her 43,090 litres of fuel provides a range of 980 nautical miles, which increases to an admirable 2,800 nautical miles at her 12-knot economical cruising speed. Her elegantly aggressive exterior line reveals a classic raised pilothouse design with spacious deck areas aloft, forward and aft. These are complemented by a fold-down stern platform that opens to reveal a compact beach club that gives access forward to an athwartships tender garage. Inside, the brief called for a traditionally laid-out interior, well illuminated by natural light, offering a “welcoming and sober style”. This was achieved by Paszkowski and Casprini with predominantly grey hues and a small palette of materials that create a sense of harmony throughout the vessel. Fast, stylish and fully featured, she is a worthy winner.

SEMI-DISPLACEMENT OR PLANING MOTOR YACHTS, 42M AND ABOVE: CALLISTO

Four finalists were lined up to compete in this, the largest of the semi-displacement and planing classes. Our judges, having thoroughly examined the material provided in the dossier, voted that Callisto , a 42.5-metre, full-custom, fast-displacement design built by Feadship, was the winner by a close margin. The owners of Callisto , who also own a much-loved 65-metre Feadship of the same name that launched in 2006, wished to downsize and focus their future cruising on the Mediterranean, where a smaller vessel would allow access to more ports and anchorages. They also wanted a good turn of speed to dart between these, as well as comfortable navigation at lower speeds, so a fast displacement vessel that could replicate as many of the things they loved about their former yacht was the obvious choice. The larger Callisto had classic Feadship lines and a hint of these were retained in the new yacht, while giving her a more modern edge and personality, an example of which is seen in her near-vertical bow. After studying two versions – a raised pilothouse and a three-deck configuration – the owners opted for the three-decker, further requesting that it should be “light, liveable and summery”. Interior designer Sinot achieved this with a background of brushed and bleached oak that was combined with cinnamon oak detailing and pale marble to create the crisp, clean beach house look that was admired by the judges. The panel felt that the combination of good looks, the highest standards of construction and the very evident satisfaction of the owners with their new Callisto , were very compelling reasons to award her the coveted Neptune.

DISPLACEMENT MOTOR YACHTS 499GT AND BELOW, 30M TO 39.9M: UNKNOWN

After the judges had completed their detailed discussion of the five yachts in this class, the ballot made it clear that one yacht stood out from the crowd. The subsequent voting confirmed the supremacy of the 34.36-metre Benetti Oasis, Unknown , with exterior design by UK-based RWD and interiors by the New York architectural firm bonetti/kozerski, the same team that created the larger 40-metre Oasis design. The first thing that drew the judges’ attention were the deck spaces, in particular the aft deck, whose intimate connection with the water has created a huge and open beach club over two decks, centred on a glass-backed pool that sits astride the two levels. The judges also admired the open beach sensation created by the fold-down bulwarks to port and starboard, as well as the ideally positioned sunbathing area surrounding the pool, and the ability to unite all of this with the dining room through its wide semicircular doors. No other yacht, the judges felt, could match this highly desirable deck. Further large deck areas that offer comfortable seating and sunbathing are also to be found at the bows, on the bridge deck aft and on the sundeck, where alfresco dining is on offer. This is, in the judges’ opinion, a yacht that makes an excellent connection with the ocean and the open air. Inside, Unknown displays a natural, refined and tranquil style that perfectly matches her sporty exterior spaces, while huge windows again provide a close connection to her surroundings. The judges felt that this was a well-built, groundbreaking yacht that fits such extraordinary features into its compact size that it is very deserving of a Neptune.

DISPLACEMENT MOTOR YACHTS 499GT AND BELOW, 40M TO 44.9M: ACALA

This year, none of the classes provided easy decisions for the judges, but this was possibly the toughest even though it contained five significant yachts – all of which had been visited by judges – of a size, volume and performance that made them very comparable. The discussion that followed was lengthy and detailed but two yachts, the 44.27-metre Conrad Ace and the 42.9-metre Cantiere Delle Marche Acala , seemed to command most attention. This was confirmed by the result of the secret ballot, when Acala came out top and Ace second with near-identical scores. Acala is the second yacht of this name for this owner, whose family had used their first vessel, a smaller Darwin 102 delivered by Cantiere Delle Marche in 2015, to visit and dive in the remote islands and archipelagos of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. This, his second yacht of the same name, was devised to provide additional comfort while using their extensive knowledge to customise it to their exact needs. Working with designer and naval architect Horacio Bozzo and interior designer Simon Hamui, they defined and designed every aspect of their new yacht and spent almost a year working on its technical aspects. In the owner’s own words: “The shipyard has outdone itself – the build was smooth and totally under control, and the quality of construction is impeccable.” The judges admired Acala ’s rugged good looks, her well-sized engines that provide a top speed of 15.3 knots and a 7,506-nautical- mile range at 10 knots, excellent crew areas, a superb diving store and her elegant and modern interior. Their summary was that this is a true explorer yacht, well conceived and built, that perfectly met all of her owner’s needs. As such, she is an extremely deserving winner.

JUDGES’ COMMENDATION: ACE

Length 44.27m Builder Conrad Shipyard Naval architect Diana Yacht Design Exterior designer Reymond Langton Design Interior designer m2atelier

During their visits to Ace , our judges admired many aspects of this Conrad C144s design first seen in her near sistership, the smaller 40-metre Viatoris , also penned by Diana Yacht Design and Reymond Langton Design. Appealingly attractive and built to a commendably high standard, she was commented on favourably by the judges on the generous size and practicality of her well-laid-out deck spaces, while admiring her interior design, created by Marco Bonelli and Marijana Radovic’s m2atelier. They also thought highly of her convivial crew facilities and working areas, as well as her engineering and technical areas. Her owner came across Viatoris , the near-sistership to Ace , during the 2018 Cannes and Monaco yacht shows, and after spending a good deal of time aboard, sea-trialling her and discussing a few changes – notably his request for a slightly larger vessel with a vertical bow rather than the raked bow of Viatoris – the deal was signed and Ace started her voyage to reality. In view of the extreme closeness of the results of this class, together with their admiration for the product of this up-and-coming Polish superyacht yard, the judges decided to award Ace – an enviable all-rounder yacht – with a Judges’ Commendation.

DISPLACEMENT MOTOR YACHTS 499GT AND BELOW, 45M AND ABOVE: OCEAN Z

Length 49.9m Builder Heesen Yachts Naval architect Heesen Yachts Exterior designer Clifford Denn Design Interior designer Reymond Langton Design

Having reviewed all the yachts in this class in some detail, the judges’ secret ballot clearly showed the 49.9-metre Heesen Ocean Z to be the clear winner. Her American owners had purchased their first yacht, a 32.9-metre, during the Covid-19 pandemic, a time when they had made a great deal of use of her. Having uncovered a new-found passion for the yachting lifestyle, they decided to invest in a new vessel more tailored to their lifestyle. Their research drew them to a semi-displacement yacht under construction at Heesen, but she swiftly came under offer and they lost her. On reflection, however, this was a serendipitous moment as it caused them to reassess exactly what they wanted. Comfort and good seakeeping came at the top of their list, so when another in-build Heesen of similar size and appearance became available – this time built from steel with a full-displacement hull form offering the comfort that they now sought – it was seen as fate, and a contract was signed. Ocean Z is the third vessel in Heesen’s 50-metre series - true bluewater vessels offering a top speed of 15 knots and a range of 3,800 nautical miles at 13 knots - which feature a purposeful exterior design by Clifford Denn. Ocean Z ’s interior, by Reymond Langton Design, although already underway, was customised to the owners’ need for clean and simple lines, bright open spaces and subtle contrasts of light and shade that were admired by the judges. This, combined with the yacht’s attractive lines, excellent deck spaces and Heesen’s high quality of construction and engineering, tipped the judges’ balance in favour of this very competent yacht.

DISPLACEMENT MOTOR YACHTS, 500GT TO 1,499GT: COME TOGETHER

This was another class in which the high quality of the contestants – all built by notable shipyards – made it difficult for the judges to decide a winner. Each yacht certainly displayed some enviable attributes, but the voting revealed that Come Together , the first vessel in the Amels 60-metre semi-custom series designed by Damen Yachting, with exterior design by Espen Øino and her interior by Winch Design, narrowly topped the secret ballot. But this was not an easy victory as she was chased hard by the 54.9-metre Feadship Shinkai and the 60-metre Heesen Lusine . The owner’s brief for Come Together was clear. Limiting the carbon footprint came top of the list, followed by the need for a stable, seaworthy platform for comfortable cruising. When focusing on the design detail, he requested an expansive sundeck and the ability to touch and go in a helicopter. In terms of the interior, the request was for an atmosphere in which he could entertain and unwind with family and friends. Winch Design met this with a relaxed and natural theme that gives a subtly masculine feel to its tactile and architectural form. This, in the judges’ view, blended well with Espen Øino’s pleasingly angular and geometric exterior. Among other admirable layout features, the judges were also influenced by the yacht’s amazingly spacious sundeck, where the central portion could be blocked by sliding- glass doors to prevent the unpleasant wind tunnel effect that can spoil open-air gatherings. The yacht’s hybrid-propulsion technology was also admired, enabling the yacht to up anchor and slow cruise without starting the engines and disturbing guests. This, the judges concluded, was a well-conceived yacht and a deserved winner.

JUDGES’ COMMENDATION: LUSINE

Having produced few fully customised vessels in recent years, Heesen is today best known for its range of high-quality semi-custom yachts built as speculative projects. But the company shines when commissioned for a fully customised vessel such as the 60-metre Lusine . Developed from a concept design, her elegant exterior features a touch-and-go helipad that can also be used as a sports deck, a private owner’s deck, guest areas on both the fore and aft of the main deck and a large bathing platform. Set within a practical GA, her sophisticated interior reveals an exquisite display of opulence that reinvents the understated glamour of the art deco period. Its star attraction, perhaps, is the games table inset with a slice of genuine lunar rock in a nod to the yacht’s name, which is Armenian for the word “Moon”. Provided with a fast-displacement hull form by naval architects Van Oossanen, Lusine has a top speed of 15.5 knots and a 4,500-nautical-mile range at 13 knots. She is tailored to the needs of an experienced client, and the judges felt that this was a special yacht which, in view of the closeness of the scoring, should be awarded a Judges’ Commendation.

DISPLACEMENT MOTOR YACHTS, 1,500GT AND ABOVE: KENSHŌ

This was yet another class in which all the competitors are superb yachts, but a winner had to be chosen. After long deliberation, the secret ballot revealed that the 74.85-metre Kenshō , built by Admiral, a brand of The Italian Sea Group, who also acted as naval architects in conjunction with Azure Yacht Design & Naval Architecture, had triumphed. Azure also created the yacht’s exterior design with multi-disciplined architectural and engineering consulting company archineers.berlin. The yacht’s German owner wanted an “out of the ordinary superyacht to travel the world with family and guests”, and he presented an extremely concise list of demands for the designers to make reality. First of all he wanted to prioritise his interior design requirements over the yacht’s technical needs in creating a design with a high ratio of living areas to technical spaces. This living area could be spread over four decks, and should offer generous room heights of 2.7 metres on the main and upper decks, while incorporating highly glazed, forward-facing living rooms above the wheelhouse. Additionally, there should be generous outdoor living areas, especially on the lower deck aft, which should be dedicated to a large and comfortable beach club. Add in the need for optimal circulation routes, two pools, a four-deck lift, helicopter pad, excellent storage for a nine-metre tender and toys, and spacious crew areas. Such unique demands gave the design team food for thought, but they achieved the owner’s wishes. Despite the jury not being unanimously drawn to her exterior styling, the admirable manner in which the other requests were met by her builders and designers led to her being declared an exemplary winner of this competitive class.

JUDGES’ COMMENDATION: JUICE

The owner’s previous vessel had been the first Feadship F45, used for family and friends in which he had cruised for ten years before returning to Feadship in search of a larger vessel. This new yacht was to feature a private owner’s deck, and was to exhibit the highest quality construction while emanating an air of refined elegance and timeless modernity. The result was the 71.1-metre Juice , featuring naval architecture by De Voogt, exterior design by RWD, and interior design by Peter Marino. The judges were impressed by her sleek exterior lines, together with impressive detailing such as that seen in the “pencil line” shadows that draw the eye forward and aft from the hull’s tear-shaped windows. They also applauded the manner in which the exterior staircases giving access to the upper decks are separated from the superstructure to let more light in the interior. The fact that the owner spent hours perfecting the interior with Marino, even personally selecting individual pieces of veneer for the stairwells, is a testimony to his involvement in the creation of his perfect yacht. The judges agreed that such superb build quality and attention to detail should be rewarded with a Commendation.

JUDGES’ SPECIAL AWARDS: SHINKAI

Many superyachts are classed by their builders as “expedition yachts”, but when put under scrutiny few actually meet the specific needs of a vessel designed to explore the oceans from tropics to high latitudes. But the 54.9-metre De Vries-built Feadship Shinkai , featuring naval architecture by Vitruvius and de Voogt, is a true go-anywhere vessel. Her experienced owner’s second explorer yacht, she is a development of his first Vitruvius-designed vessel that has, where necessary, refined and amplified aspects of his earlier yacht in which he twice circumnavigated the globe. Shinkai ’s worldwide cruising grounds include polar and uncharted regions, as well as the depths of the ocean, and this led to the need for ice classification, FLIR night-vision cameras and the installation of forward-looking 3D sonar and seafloor-charting equipment to assist navigation in uncharted waters. Shinkai ’s permanently embarked U-Boat Worx submarine gives the ability to descend to between 300 and 480 metres, while she also carries a full range of tenders, including an eight-metre limousine and a six-metre SOLAS tender. For land exploration, there is a six-person SUV housed in a weatherproof garage. As many of the areas that this yacht will visit are environmentally sensitive, Shinkai has SCR units to remove harmful emissions from her exhausts, state-of-the-art black/grey water systems, plus garbage compaction and freezing systems. Add to this a range of 6,200 nautical miles at 12 knots, an interior perfectly suited to the owner’s needs, and the legendary build quality of the de Vries shipyard, and the result is an extraordinarily capable explorer that so impressed the judges that it was unanimously decided to present her with a Neptune to denote a Judges’ Special Award.

JUDGES’ SPECIAL AWARDS: CORAL OCEAN

When the majority of judges seriously admire a narrowly second-placed yacht, they usually discuss the presentation of either a Judges’ Commendation or Judges’ Special Award. Such discussions are commonplace in the Refit and Rebuild Class, where comparing differing yachts can be problematic. Such was the case this year, when the upgrades to both Athos and Coral Ocean were much admired by the judges. While the refit of winner Athos had completely updated her, any changes would take an expert eye to spot, while the changes to Coral Ocean are more obvious. The owner’s aim was to allow charterers to fall in love with every space, particularly the deck spaces that urgently needed upgrading. Additionally, he felt it essential that all six guest cabins should offer equal facilities to charterers. The sundeck was reimagined, with a new central deckhouse containing a TV lounge, dining area and bar, all lit through a sunroof and glazed doors that access open decks fore and aft. Forward is a glass-sided spa pool, while aft is a sunbathing and observation deck. This new area, in conjunction with the upgraded cabins and the sensitive approach to the refit, was considered to be worthy of a Judges’ Special Award.

JUDGES’ SPECIAL AWARDS: NEBULA

Nebula was the sole support vessel delivered in the qualifying year for these awards, and given the unfairness of judging a work vessel against superyachts of similar size, the judges decided that she should be judged in a Support Vessel class of her own and only awarded a Neptune if she came up to the highest standards of past winners. Even the briefest look at this yacht’s dossier assured the judges that this was a very special craft. Built in Spain by Astilleros Armon with naval architecture by Incat Crowther and interior design by Schwalgien Yacht Design, this 68.2-metre aluminium catamaran came about from an owner’s requirement to safely land his H145 helicopter on its certified landing zone, support it with refuelling facilities and a workshop, and store it securely in a weatherproof garage without folding its blades. While guests previously landed on the foredeck of the mothership adjacent to the owner’s suite, they now land more safely on Nebula ’s helipad and transfer on a 12-metre custom-built catamaran tender. Nebula also carries a 10-metre Scorpion RIB as well as a seven-metre Pascoe RIB. The vessel is provided with guest accommodation, guest deck areas and a lounge, should there be delays between landing and transfer, as well as a hospital cabin, waste treatment facilities, storerooms, and a sizeable laundry to support the mothership. Apart from these, and her 15-metre by 12-metre helicopter hangar, her size allows for excellent crew facilities that include a crew gymnasium, yoga and sunbathing area on the sundeck. With a top speed of 21 knots and an 8,900-nautical-mile-plus range, Nebula is an extraordinary vessel, and a well-deserved winner of this special Neptune.

VOYAGER’S AWARD: V6

Length 48.5m Builder G&K Yachting SA

Significant cruises are rarely impulsive, while some take years to plan, so the impact of Covid-19-related restrictions still cause a major impact on Voyager’s Award entries. Last year saw two entries, both made on impulse when their respective owners foresaw a need to isolate themselves. This year there was just one, and while remaining travel uncertainties meant that this entry was not as far-ranging as most in the past, the jury nevertheless considered it to be highly significant in terms of the amazing experience had by all those on board 48.5-metre expedition yacht V6 . She logged 14,500 nautical miles during her summer 2022 cruise, starting in San Diego, transiting the Panama Canal to the Los Roques archipelago off the Venezuelan coast, then returning through the canal and north to British Columbia and Alaska, before closing the loop at San Diego. While the judges considered the distance covered to be a feat in itself, Voyager’s Award rules require the owner, or a guest nominated by the owner, to be aboard for the majority of the cruise. This condition was not met during the lengthy transits, so the judges decided to consider the element from Seattle to Anchorage as a stand-alone voyage – a cruise that met the needs of the award and with a scope equal to that of former winners. The adventure started on leaving Seattle, with orca and bald eagle sightings, scenic fjords, rides in historic float planes, and trips to the whirlpools of Arran Rapids and the all-but-abandoned town of Ocean Falls. The Alaska leg added canoeing, fishing, otter-, bear- and moose-spotting and beach barbecues into the mix. This was a well-documented cruise, spectacularly illustrated with remarkable photography.

LEGACY AWARD: RAHMI M. KOÇ

Mention the name Rahmi M. Koç to a group of international businessmen and they will instantly link it to his family business, Koç Holding A.S., a Fortune 500 company with a turnover of $52 billion, that is responsible for seven per cent of Turkey’s exports. Rahmi Koç has dedicated his life to this company, eventually taking over from his father, Vehbi Koç, as chairman of the board in 1984, a post he held until his retirement in 2003. The company’s achievements have been legendary – forging international manufacturing partnerships with global brands such as Ford, Fiat, Peugeot and Siemens, but also in setting up or acquiring wholly owned companies in fields as diverse as household goods, medical products, hotels, marinas and banking.

Despite his involvement with this huge group of companies, Rahmi Koç always found time for his particular passion – boats. A keen yachtsman since his childhood holidays, which, in his own words, were spent “mucking around in boats” on the Bosphorus, he grew up to become an avid collector of vessels both large and small, powered by steam, sail and diesel. He accumulated so many that he doesn’t know the exact number, but many can be found in perfect working condition in Istanbul’s superb Rahmi M. Koç Museum. Vessels such as the 1907 steam-tug Gonca , and the William Fife-designed 12 Metre Lady Edith launched in 1925, have been saved for posterity and are open for public viewing, which is a legacy in itself, but Rahmi still asserts that his first “real” boat was Nazenin , a 19-metre Francis Jones design which he built in Turkey in 1977 and still owns. Then came Nazenin II , an Alden 23-metre, and then Nazenin III , another Alden ketch, but this time 33 metres LOA. Having crossed the Atlantic, he then set his sights on a circumnavigation and his extensive experience was poured into the fourth Nazenin , a 35-metre designed by Sparkman & Stephens and built by Palmer Johnson, in which he took two years to circle the globe. His current flagship is Nazenin V , a Sparkman & Stephens-designed 52-metre built at RMK, his own shipyard in Istanbul.

Tonight, we celebrate this remarkable life in business, philanthropy and boats with the presentation of a well-deserved Legacy Award.
