Carina of Solent has added a new dimension to our sailing. Her twin rudders and swing keel offer the flexibility of sailing shallow waters, exploring creeks and of drying out, sitting upright! Together with a tall fractional rig she gives good performance and is a stable, comfortable and fun yacht – perfect for an upcoming cruise in the Netherlands.

ELFIDA replaced our Dufour 36 – with twin steering wheels and large cockpit space, she is a popular, fun yacht and an ideal club boat.     Below deck, there are three sleeping cabins, suitable for families or three couples and her roomy main cabin includes a smart galley with a large top loading fridge; ideal for cruising in Brittany and the south coast.

Hallberg Rassy 36

Solent sailing and yacht share

JOCALIA is a heavier displacement sea kindly yacht and it’s no secret that the HR 36 is a well proven blue water cruiser. With her well-protected centre cockpit, great deck seats at the stern, comfortable, cosy cabins and secure galley, she is a much loved yacht for both local and offshore cruising. She has visited The Azores & Madeira.

Founded in 1979, Tops’l members still enjoy a flexible, affordable way to sail in great waters (not always in the UK) and in effect are all part owners of not one but three very different top quality yachts.

With an emphasis on cruising, our yachts carry up to date safety equipment and are maintained to the highest standard. Members enjoy fabulous south coast sailing, offshore passages and exploring new cruising grounds together with opportunities to improve sailing skills.

Organised club sails and social events add to the welcoming club atmosphere and there is always someone to sail with.  Our inclusive, like-minded members come from all walks of life and some travel from quite far afield to sail with us, testament to our supportive friendly club and the satisfaction of sailing superb yachts.

You may have your own boat but are now looking for an alternative way to sail or perhaps you are thinking of becoming a boat owner but not yet sure – come and try us first!  Whether you are a lone sailor or have a sailing family; how much or how little time you have to spend on the water or whatever your sailing ability, you are welcome to come for a sail and see for yourself.

Through the purchase of shares, all Tops’l members are effectively part owners of the club’s assets and have the benefit of sailing top quality yachts. Tops’l is a not for profit organisation and charges are set so that members may both enjoy and maintain high standards by covering costs together with the effects of depreciation and inflation in an affordable way.

Unlike some schemes, the cost you pay is related to the amount you sail.

What will it cost to join us?

There are three cost elements to Tops’l membership – share purchases, monthly subscriptions, and daily sailing charges.

Share Purchase:  On joining, a minimum of 600 shares @ £3.49 * = £2,094

Monthly Subscription: Individual £36 (crew), £54 (skipper) Family Membership: For an additional £12/month family and friends may sail A member’s children or grandchildren under 18 sail free

Daily Sailing Charge: £55/day (less Discount – see below) Plus a share of fuel and away from base mooring costs Family Exclusive : Exclusive use of yacht for family and friends £220/day NB Charge is for four berths and the discount may also be used

*     Share price to 2025 AGM.   Please email [email protected] for further information.

Shares : The minimum requirement for a member’s holding is 600.  Members’ shareholdings vary considerably and in most cases are very much dependant on individual circumstances and usage of the club.  For instance, the average holding of a skipper is in the region of 2,700 shares.  Fairness is achieved through an annual shareholder discount.  Shares must be held for a minimum of five years and, when the member leaves/retires, the shares can be redeemed at the latest share price.

Subscription : There is a low subscription which is paid monthly and in the first instance everyone joins as crew.  For a small additional monthly supplement a ‘family and friends option’ is available and all family and friends must be nominated on an easily amended list.

Sailing Charges : Based on a berth/day concept.  A member books a berth rather than the whole boat so the individual charge is the same whether three persons or more are on board.

Engine Charges : These cover the cost of fuel, gas and maintenance and are charged per hour of use shared by the crew.

Discount : The discount is in the form of Annual Sailing Vouchers: Each block of 100 fully paid for shares attracts one voucher to be used during the year of issue and may not be carried forward.  One voucher per person per day reduces the daily sailing cost by £13.  A member may use them for anyone in his/her crew.

Other Charges: Insurance excess min. £450+ excess depending on sailing area – shared by the crew in the event of an incident.

Shares must be held for a minimum of five years and, when the member leaves/retires, the shares can be redeemed back to the club at the latest share price.

Other Charges: Insurance excess min. £500+ excess depending on sailing area – shared by the crew in the event of an incident.

Phil’s Story

Tops’l is a remarkable cruising club. For someone like me who is hoping to progress to Yachtmaster, I can kill two birds with one stone by getting the miles and qualifying passages whilst having a holiday and some fun with other members. Two other distinct plusses are the sheer quality and condition of the yachts (Carina was in fine fettle for the trip) and also the mentoring from longstanding members like Steve, Mike and Peter. I learnt a huge amount in the week as indeed I did last year in Devon with Mike and Adrian.

West Solent One Design Restored & Racing: Toba in Argentina

Toba racing

Toba is a fine example of a reborn West Solent One Design, which is now alive and kicking, and playing hard in Argentina, Marcelo Baltzer Foucher reports.

The legacy of toba , the west solent one design.

Toba is one of the five West Solent Class commissioned by the Argentina Yacht Club and ordered in 1924.

According to the brochure published in 1926 by the builder and designer, Mr. Harry G. May at Berthon Boat Company Limited , they were advertised as the “Lymington Racing Cruisers”, then became known as the “W” boats and finally classed as the “West Solent Restricted One-Design Class” that lead to the acronym WSOD.

The first five boats were built in 1924 for members of the Lymington Yacht Club at a cost of £600. In the same year, five boats were built under Lloyds supervision and sent to Argentina. According to the same brochure the owners were very happy with the boats and their performance.

Toba

The Argentinian boats were all named after native tribes, these being: Querandí, Toba, Ona, Timbú and Yagan , and for this reason they were known as “Los Indios”.

Of the five boats that arrived in Argentina, only Toba is operational and competing in the Argentinian Classic Boats circuit in the Vintage category.

Querandí is in the process of restoration, Ona is in the port of La Paloma in Uruguay and has been converted into a cruising boat and there is no information about Yagan and Timbú .

A total of 36 boats were built, half of which are still sailing in the UK, France, Spain and now Argentina .

A Providential Destiny

Fate has curious ways of manifesting itself. Juan Pablo Fregonese, Marcelo Baltzer and Carlos Criado, the partners of the project, discovered this dream boat in almost mystical circumstances.

After finishing the last day of regattas of the J70 European Championship held in Vigo, Spain, in June 2018, we wondered how much longer we could withstand the rigors of the J70 and raised the idea of looking for a classic boat as the next phase of our passion for competitive sailing, but we did not set a date.

Three years later we were chatting about classic boats while having lunch at the Yacht Club Argentino with Carlos (Pacho) Criado, and by chance we encountered Toba for the first time.

Toba

An acquaintance from the club came over and, as if revealing a hidden treasure, she said, I have the boat for you! She showed us pictures of Toba . She was a jewel that demanded a major restoration, but her charm and historical relevance were undeniable. A few Google searches and an immediate visit to the Yacht Club San Isidro to see it in person, sealed the deal. Marcelo, who lives in Spain, was convinced by his wife Tatei to join the project, despite initial concerns about distance. And so, in April 2021, Toba was under new command.

The Rebirth of Toba

The process of conservation, restoration and enhancement of Toba was based on the conservation principles established by the National Historic Ships UK (NHS-UK) in the guidance manual Conserving Historic Vessels .

West Solent One Design: Objectives

Firstly, we pictured three possible scenarios for the restoration of Toba . Would we restore the boat for a museum exhibition, without nautical requirements? Make her sail again without other demands than the current safety regulations? Alternatively, could we make a much greater effort and intervene with all the necessary procedures as indicated by the NHS-UK, for her to sail and participate in regattas?

Toba racing

After very enjoyable and long conversations, we went for the last option and embraced a restoration project that would keep us very busy during the subsequent 18 months.

Juan Pablo began working in Buenos Aires, at the shipyard of the YCA headquarters San Fernando, and looking for the best local artisans. Meanwhile, Marcelo visited Berthon Boat Company at The Shipyard in Lymington, England, where all but one of the WSOD fleet were built and met Brian May, MD of the company, and great-grandson of the original designer Harry G May, who kindly showed and explained to us his ongoing restoration of the West Solent W8 Ripple, ex Dinah, by young apprentices. Brian also gave us access to the original drawings, PR and sail plans. In addition, Marcelo visited Kevin Fuller, owner of the W29 Mischief and Chris Preston, owner of the W2 Suvretta , both enjoying sailing today on the English coast. They all showed great enthusiasm and shared very valuable information with us.

Assessment and State of Conservation

A technical diagnosis and detailed analysis of each component of the boat was carried out by Juan Pablo and his team to determine the materials and technology used for its construction 100 years ago.

Boat plans

We were powerfully struck by the minimalist design and elegant arrangement of the internal structure of the stringers that were kept visible in the original design. When a plank was dismantled, the discovery of bronze nails with a square section, used in the attachment of planks to the hull frames, gave us a favourable picture of the general solidity and good state of preservation of the hull. Likewise, the lodging knees of frames, beams, metal plate floors and reinforcements were found in a very good state of conservation, allowing us to plan the tasks to be carried out during the restoration process.

In parallel, several consultations were made with technical specialists to validate our initial findings and to perform a state-of-the-art scan of the original mast and boom to rule out fissures and confirm the solidity of the Oregon pine wood.

Historical archives were searched for graphic and photographic backgrounds to support technical and design decisions.

Magazine 1924

The process was supported by videos and pictures to create a project portfolio with draw ings, sail plans and written documents.

Conservation, Intervention and Updating

We decided to respect the designer’s original idea and worked towards rebuilding an agile and simple racing boat, emphasising on performance in regatta sailing.

Throughout the process, it was a priority to preserve as many of the original elements as possible in their current state, restoring them when required.

Toba transom - west solent one desing

We carried out the following main works

Mast and boom: complete cleaning and sanding (to zero), repair and filling of cavities and perforations caused by previous screws and fittings, and application of nine layers of marine varnish with anti-UV protection. As the boom and mast were original, we installed the mast according to the 1924 plan, we cut the boom based on the 2019 sail plan and kept it height position based on the existing location of the fittings on the mast. With the boat and sails being more rigid, the loss of mainsail area is easily bettered by less weather helm, especially in heavier wind.

Rigging: we based the rigging design on the 2019 sail plan provided by Berthon and we added a lower shroud to gain mast stability. We relocated the closed shroud turnbuckles below deck, designing special bushings and chainplates that absorbed the change of direction stress from the low shrouds, resulting in a clean and stylish deck.

Hull: replacement of the necessary planks with semi-hard Bolivian cedar wood, which has a density almost identical to that of the original mahogany.

Deck structure: adaptation, relocation, and addition of horizontal and vertical reinforcements, to support the fittings of the new deck layout.

Keel and rudder: replacement of the original Admiralty bronze keel bolts with stainless steel replicas and a full hydraulic sealing was used to fix the ballast to the keel. A complete reconstruction of the rudder shaft and blade was made.

Toba rebuild

Deck: a classic solution was chosen, with a caulked, flush deck, supported and fixed directly to the beams. Petiribí, a local hardwood, was used.  The height of the skylight butterfly hatch and coaming was reduced by 3in (75mm), to improve and emphasize the sheer and proportion of the hull.

Cockpit: the original closing hatch was modified and made removable to accommodate an additional crew member position in the cockpit area.

Fittings: we respected the original position of main halyard and headsail winches on the mast, avoiding the use of organisers and stoppers on deck. In the cockpit, the original sheet winches were reused. All new fittings and deck rails were bought from special classic boat vendors like Davey & Co, Toplicht or Wilmex.

As expected, the launch that took place in the Yacht Club Argentino San Fernando in June 2022 has been a great success and the first test for this reborn boat.

Furthermore, she exceeded our expectations in the first regatta and continued to do so in subsequent competitions, winning in 2023 the gold medal of the Argentinian Yacht Club in the Vintage class and the 2023 Grand Prix of Classics in category B of the Vintage class.

In addition, Toba has sailed 800 nautical miles in El Rio de la Plata to compete in Uruguay in the last two years during which she responded excellently in heavy seas and 30 knots of wind.

Far from being a transition to a more relaxed life, as we initially thought, sailing this West Solent One Design  has proven to be an experience full of technical and emotional challenges, but hugely rewarding and giving us a blast from the past.

Today, with Toba back on the water and the recognition of the Argentinian nautical community, the project partners feel they have achieved something monumental, the recovery of one of the most significant boats in the history of classic Argentinian sailing.

October 2023

October 2023

It is sometimes said that any naval October when many of that nation’s naval officers would be retiring to their bed after a good Trafalgar Night Dinner, replete with tasty food, wine and port.

The PSYC TN Dinner followed suit, did not disappoint and no foreign warships were spotted at the lock gates.

The battle plan was put into action early on the morning of the 21 . Flags were hoisted, executed and much  done by the Vice President on the risk of ‘alarms’ being sounded during the planned ‘ Calmed by a ship’s captain, who has experience in these matters, a voyage plan was filed for the route.

In the evening, ninety-two crew reported for duty. Embarked on tables of different and wearing finery seldom seen around the pontoons, the scene was set for a night which promised to blend tradition with fun.

Dining, fortification, a ‘touch of history’ (superbly delivered by our President and his table captains), and toasting were the standing orders of the day. As the evening progressed so did the banter, not only between the omnipresent ‘power’ and ‘sail’ contingencies but also the crew showing support for their own captains and ships.

The was introduced

With no smoke detectors activated during the spectacular parade, Madam Vice finally relaxed, so much so that she tried to offer a glass of port to all crew before the President had received his final reports  - Hooray tio!

The President then delivered a eulogy to Nelson culminating in the most important moment of the evening, a toast to  .

Following a few songs led by ‘ , all crew stood to attention with a rousing rendition of ‘Rule Britannia’ which was a patriotic and fitting close to what, by common consensus, was a fabulous evening.

                Yours Aye

                Susan

Despite the ‘ weather, the PSYC ‘Staycation’ weekend kicked off to a very credible start.

Braving wind and rain, the club banner was raised on the splendid Oyster Quay marquee with the club’s pennant flags marking the path to the start of what would turn out to be a rather splendid evening, full of chit chat, friendly banter, delicious Caribbean styled food, and energetic dancing to the sounds of steel drums, reggae and general ‘joint bending’ Caribbean vibes.

The  ‘Cruisin’ Cuisine’ food truck did a roaring ‘sell out’ trade, serving an offering of chickpea curry, spiced prawns, jerk chicken, and curry goat with a variety of rice and sides to complement, who knew so many people liked goat curry.

Everybody brought their own drinks, as instructed, and only one person, who shall remain nameless, asked where the bar was but a problem soon solved!

A splendid turnout of 58 members ensured that an excellent night was had by all, and a big thank you to Deborah & Chris Queen for arranging access to the Oyster Quay marquee.

Our spirits remained high throughout the evening and not dampened by the continuing rain but, unfortunately, it was decided late on Friday night to cancel the ‘Picnic on the Park’ for the following afternoon. I know we don’t mind getting wet out at sea but a picnic and games on grass, would have been a different matter!

Saturday night saw a return of 30 members to the Harvester, again supposedly on the new, warm, waterside patio deck: not to be. The patio deck refurbishment was unfortunately delayed in its opening but, moreover, it was also cold and damp, so we returned to our regular upstairs haunt, with dedicated bar service and nibbles provided by PSYC. Roll on the summer. The outside deck will be a wonderful alternative for sunny ‘First Fridays’.

And so, to Sunday and the last event of our Staycation, a tender rally or foot passage to ‘The Crate’ for a Bacon roll and Glass of Buck’s fizz. Twelve tenders signed up for the expedition, but the weather forecast the night before had not been brilliant and only four tenders followed the ‘moose call’ out of the lock for a well-earned brunch.

But guess what, the 32 members that arrived at the Crate enjoyed a marvellous warm Sunday afternoon of relaxation as the sun finally decided to make an appearance to mark the close of our Staycation weekend.

Someone mentioned that there was a race on in the Solent this weekend; I don’t think they has as much fun as  we did!

land for a night of hearty comradery, eating drinking, dancing, and general merriment.

up and assembled close together so that the village could congregate and trade compliments (or insults) about their clothes. What an effort everyone made; quite a sight to be seen. Some villagers were barely recognisable (you know who you are) and in a few instances , fishermen had kindly brought some fish around their necks to add to the feast:

to everyone.

There was, however, an element of ‘head scratching’ before the meal when it became apparent that many in the village didn’t ‘know their knots’ and couldn’t easily establish their place at the table. It was interesting to watch some villagers take out those newfangled instruments called smart phones and photograph the knot, hoping that, the little person inside would give them the answer. This did give rise to a moment of concern for the head villager who thought people might tell her ‘to get knotted’ but, then again, her olde sea dog was on hand to help. Funny, I wonder whose idea that was?

fayre, and very scrummy it was too. Sitting down to tables, bedecked with check tablecloths and tea lights, the chatter and banter continued, interspersed with laughter as ‘Ye Olde Photo Boothe’ caricaturist sketched some villagers in action.

as the village dancers encouraged others into the square.

recorded scores. ‘Colouring the castle’ became a bit of a hit, particularly towards the end of the evening when a mixture of names, flowers, designs, and even a White Ensign were coloured onto the ramparts.

the morning. Building the castle did take slightly longer than anticipated. And in particular, to ‘my old sea dog’ who very patiently, sometimes not quite so, helped me place 258 colour coded stickers, in the correct order, onto 86 individually printed ration cards; perhaps not to be repeated!
