Why Michelle Obama's Vacation With Tom Hanks on a $255M Luxury Yacht Caused a Huge Stir
Former first lady Michelle Obama was spotted in September 2023, away from her husband Barack Obama , on an exotic super boat vacation with her affluent friends. Oscar winner Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson, together with Steven Spielberg and his wife Kate Capshaw, were all visible in the widely shared photos from their holiday in Italy, which created quite a commotion. As per Nicki Swift , internet users believed that there was unrest between the Obamas, "It seems #MichelleObama went on vacation without her husband , while enjoying the company of Tom Hanks in Italy before boarding Steven Spielberg's $255 million superyacht," a critic wrote on X.
Another X user speculated : "More importantly, why is Michelle Obama vacationing in Europe with Tom Hanks and a bunch of celebrities for months without Barack? Is she about the chef?" Someone else pointed out : "Michelle Obama is celebrating this momentous occasion on a yacht with Tom Hanks. Barack and Michelle haven’t been seen together in quite some time."
However, the Hanks and Obamas have remained friends for the longest of time, and according to People , this is not the first time Michelle has vacationed with her friends. The group of friends were photographed relaxing in 2017 off the coast of Tahiti on the $300 million, 450-foot yacht The Rising Sun, owned by billionaire David Geffen. After stopping at Le Taha'a Island for lunch, the group continued on to Bora Bora. Oprah Winfrey, who was present, shared that she 'can't talk about' the opulent French Polynesian yacht cruise she took with Bruce Springsteen, Tom Hanks, Michelle, and Barack. “What happens on the boat, stays on the boat,” she said back then.
However, Hanks joked about their 'secret trip' while appearing on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. “That made the news, it was really interesting. Both Oprah and I were really off." “Look, imagine what it could’ve been like it, triple it. It was off the scale, fantastic,” the Forrest Gump actor revealed. Hanks hilariously stated that he went sightseeing on a rented 'undersized, girl's bike' with the former president and First Lady. The Medal of Freedom recipient also added that the Secret Service had an 'array of bikes' to pick from. “It was rusted like all over, it only had one gear … all the others were like mountain bikes … it was so bad,” Hanks said.
Regarding the nature of the conversations that Oprah and Springsteen had with the Obamas, Hanks recalled attempting to persuade the 44th president to divulge material that was considered 'classified.' Meanwhile, Barack joked about the given challenge and told the Finch actor, "I'd like to share a ton of stories from it, but they're classified." Michelle and Hanks have always been good friends. As per People , in October 2019, the former First Lady received the Hanks Caregiver Champion Award, which is given to individuals who have provided exceptional support to military caregivers.
“You all changed me forever,” she said emotionally while receiving the award. “You have changed the way I see service, you’ve changed the way I see war, you’ve changed the way I see this entire country. Whether we simply talk about the values we like to pride ourselves on, values like duty and honor and patriotism, or if we actually live them out.”

Steven Spielberg Takes Delivery On His Cinematic $250 Million Superyacht
Considering he’s only ever agreed on a handful of occasions — and solely for two major franchises ( Indiana Jones , Jurassic Park ) — it takes a lot to convince that Steven Spielberg something needs a sequel, which should give you some idea about the significance of his brand new superyacht: Seven Seas 2.0.
For context, Seven Seas was also the name of his last Oceanco-built luxury vessel. Measuring 282 feet (86 metres) long, the Hollywood power player sold the previous iteration for around $150 million to make way for its eventual successor; Seven Seas 1.0 having also since been renamed Man of Steel (perhaps fellow director Zack Snyder was in the market).
Conceptualised by Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design , Seven Seas 2.0 is a considerably larger boat at 358 feet (109 metres) with a capacity for 14 guests across seven cabins as well as 30 staff across 15 cabins. Flaunting a gorgeously proportioned profile and sleek steel hull, this lightweight aluminium beauty imposes quite a presence.
Key features include the following:
- 9 x staterooms
- 1 x beach club
- 1 x helipad
- 1 x tender garage
- and of course, a full-blown movie theatre
Seven Seas is powered by twin MTU 20V 4000 M73L diesel engines, each capable of generating 4,813 horsepower and achieving speeds of 20 knots. It weighs 4,444 tons.
All in all, it’s exactly what you’d expect from a four-time Academy Award winner with a reported net worth of almost $8 billion — check out Steven Spielberg’s superyacht Seven Seas 2.0 below.

It’s a wrap for Steven Spielberg’s superyacht Seven Seas .
The world-famous director finally sold his epic 282-footer last week to an unknown buyer, according to Merle Wood & Associates . Although the brokerage firm did not specificity the amount paid, the vessel, now known as Man of Steel , was listed earlier this year for $160 million . Thom Conboy of Denison Yachting represented the buyer, who is apparently a longtime repeat client.

The blockbuster yacht, built by noted shipyard Oceanco to Spielberg’s exact specifications, first hit the seas back in 2010. The Academy Award winner, who has a net worth of $3.7 billion, spared no expense when designing his dream machine, and this is the first time it has been offered for sale.
Of course, there is a cinema onboard. Merle Wood & Associates
The glitzy interior, which was penned by Nuvolari & Lenard and Molly Isaksen, spans four decks and offers ample space for entertaining A-listers. The vessel can accommodate 20 guests across nine generous staterooms, as well as 28 crew. The scene-stealer is, of course, Spielberg’s owner’s suite, which features a full-beam stateroom with ensuite and dressing room, along with an office and a terrace with its own private jacuzzi.
Naturally, Seven Seas is brimming with amenities fit for film royalty, including supersized screens in every room and a full movie theater. Elsewhere, there is a sauna, steam room, gym, pool, huge beach club, helipad and countless lounge areas and bars. As expected, there’s also a fully-stocked garage packed with a tender, speedboat, water toys and diving gear.
Seven Seas comes equipped with plenty of toys. Merle Wood & Associates
Spielberg ensured Seven Seas lived up to her name, too. Over the past decade, the 74-year-old has taken the go-anywhere superyacht all across the seven seas. It’s been spotted sailing off the coast of France during the Cannes Film Festival, and, more recently, on the waters near Antigua and Barbuda. The yacht’s transatlantic capability comes courtesy of twin MTU engines packing 4,680 hp each. She can hit a top speed of 20 knots or cruise at a more leisurely 15 knots.
Now that Spielberg has called cut on Seven Seas , we are patiently awaiting his next marine masterpiece.

Barack and Michelle Obama Visited Loreto, Mexico
A vacation in Loreto Mexico is the perfect way to celebrate a wedding, anniversary, or birthday, even when it’s former First Lady and best-selling author Michelle Obama’s birthday. Former US President Barack Obama whisked his wife away to Loreto Mexico recently to celebrate her birthday. For celebrities like the Obamas, the tranquil and peaceful shores of Loreto are the perfect getaway to avoid crowds of fans and paparazzi.
Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie, Real Housewives of Orange County star Gretchen Rossi, and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico are just a few of the other public figures who have discovered the secluded beauty and luxury of Loreto.
The Obamas’ birthday weekend may not have made major headlines or been posted on social media, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a fabulous vacation. The couple explored Loreto’s charming and historic downtown and set sail aboard a friend’s boat, movie producer Steven Spielberg’s luxury yacht, The Seven Seas. To celebrate Michelle’s birthday, the yacht sailed through the sparkling waters of Danzante Bay and toured around the Islands of Loreto. During the winter months in the Sea of Cortez, celebrities aren’t the only ones exploring the waters. Humpback, orca, and gray whales are a few of the migratory species that escape the chilly northern waters and spend their winters in sunny Mexico. It’s likely that the Obamas spotted whales breaching the surface of the calm waters of Danzante Bay. While you probably won’t get invited onto Spielberg’s boat, yacht tours and whale watching expeditions are popular activities on any Loreto vacation.
The ex-presidential couple walked along the city boardwalk and photos were taken with residents in the area. Photo credit to the owner.
One reason many celebrities and visitors have traveled to Loreto Mexico is the magnificent golf courses. With technically challenging design and sweeping views of the mountains and the sea, these courses attract serious and famous golfers. Because Loreto Mexico is a small town, the course architects had plenty of virgin land to play with for their designs. The most popular course in town is TPC Danzante Bay , designed by the legendary Rees Jones. It’s so popular, the 17th hole here was named the “most photographed hole in all of golf” in 2019. After playing through the Sierra de la Giganta mountain range and along the beach, there’s no better way to celebrate the game than with dinner and drinks in the luxurious clubhouse. TPC Danzante Bay also has a pro shop where you can check out the latest in golf technologies or pick up a new toy to take home. Rounds of golf at TPC Danzante Bay are even more tempting with the all-inclusive packages from Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto .
For other travelers, it’s a day of pampering at the spa that makes vacations to Loreto memorable. At Sabila Spa , traditional healing techniques and modern spa innovations combine to make your body look and feel great from the inside out. Indulge in a chocolate delight massage or the Sea of Cortez mud wrap, and you’ll feel like a true VIP. Relaxing in the cool oasis of Sabila Spa at the Villa del Palmar resort is perfect after days of enjoying the other activities that make Loreto such an exciting destination for the stars. Here, snorkeling, kayaking, and paddleboarding are the top choices for those enamored by the sea, but hiking and ATV racing provide excitement on dry land. Whether you’ve spent your days on the golf course or lounging with a good book by the pool, a day at the spa is the perfect treat on a Loreto vacation.
You don’t have to be famous to vacation like a celebrity. Fill your days with rounds of golf, snorkeling excursions, and hikes in the desert, or simply pass your days lounging on the warm sands. Being surrounded by the natural beauty of the Baja Peninsula and staying at a luxury resort with warm hospitality and excellent service will make you feel like the most important star in town.

Does this 357-Foot New Yacht Belong to Steven Spielberg?
Oceanco is keeping details of the mammoth vessel’s owner under wraps.
By Irenie Forshaw
Oceanco is used to catering for the fabulously wealthy; earlier this year the Dutch shipbuilder delivered Jeff Bezos’s gleaming new ship , Koru. Now, the rumor mill is going into overdrive once again. This time, Steven Spielberg is reportedly the billionaire behind its newest yacht: Seven Seas.
Spanning 357 feet, the mammoth motoryacht isn’t as long as Koru – which scooped the title of the longest sailing yacht on the planet at 417 ft – but she does cut an impressive figure. This isn’t Spielberg’s first foray into the yachting world – the Hollywood director had his first ship (also called Seven Seas ) delivered by Oceanco back in 2010.
The original Seven Seas – whose name is inspired by Spielberg’s seven children – measured 282 feet and boasted an expansive spa , gym, beauty salon, and, of course, movie theatre. But the four-time Academy Award winner sold the ship to Canadian billionaire Barry Zekelman in 2021 for a cool $151m (the ship has since been renamed Man of Steel).
It seems Spielberg has caught the superyacht bug; the new Seven Seas is even bigger and more lavish than her predecessor. So, what do we know about the director’s latest ship? While Oceanco has remained relatively tight-lipped on the project, a few key details have emerged which we’ll dive into here.

Who is building Steven Spielberg’s new yacht?
The superyacht – previously known as project Y720 – was commissioned back in 2022 for a whopping $250m. She was built by Oceanco – the same shipyard that made Spielberg’s old boat in Alblasserdam, a town in the western Netherlands around 12 miles from Rotterdam. Omani billionaire businessman Mohammed al Barwani bought the luxury shipyard back in 2010 (he also owns Turquoise Yachts in Istanbul).

The Rise of the Superyacht Marina
Oceanco has an impressive track record when it comes to building jaw-dropping superyachts. As well as recently unveiling Bezos’s Koru, four years ago the shipbuilder delivered Black Pearl – a striking three-mast vessel which, at 350 ft, became the largest sailing yacht in the world at the time, and garnered attention for its cutting-edge eco-credentials.
What do we know about the design?
Oceanco collaborated with Dutch firm Sinot Yacht Architecture Design to build Spielberg’s new yacht. The project was overseen by Lateral Naval Architects, with the team carrying out an “extensive optimization process” to ensure Seven Seas met the highest performance standards (she is the first LY3-compliant yacht to feature a Marine Evacuation System).
Powered by twin MTU 20V 4000 M73L diesel engines, she is able to reach top speeds of up to 20 knots and weighs in at 4,444 GT. Her sleek steel hull, teak deck, and lightweight aluminum superstructure give her a graceful silhouette; this is certainly a yacht to turn heads.

Considerably larger than Spielberg’s former yacht, Seven Seas 2.0 can host up to 14 guests across seven cabins (so there’s plenty of space for his entire family). There’s also room onboard for up to 30 crew, plus a gym, pool, spa, beach club, helipad and tender garage. Oh, and there’s a movie theatre too. Obviously.
The fourth largest project delivered by Oceanco to date, she was glimpsed for the first time in March 2022 being rolled out of the construction shed at the shipyard and was spotted in the Port of Gibraltar in early July.
How about the interiors?
It’s extremely unlikely we’ll get to see inside Spielberg’s new yacht anytime soon, but we do know the interiors onboard Seven Seas have been crafted by Beverly Hills-based designer Molly Isaksen (in a telling sign she was also brought in for the interiors onboard Man of Steel ).
While details remain sparse, Oceanco did reveal we can expect plenty of “natural materials and glass onboard, offering guests an unparalleled outward-looking experience”.

Obamas board Spielberg yacht in Baja
The original story was published in the print edition of the San Diego Reader on January 27, 2020.
By Mike Madriaga Baja residents are saying the Obamas continued celebrating the former first lady’s 56th birthday in Baja California Sur.
A photo of former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, posing next to three others in Loreto, surfaced online on Jan 20 – three days after the former first lady’s birthday. Two days later, a video was posted by La Mision Loreto, a hotel and resort – on their Facebook page.
On the two-minute video captured via drone, the former first couple, disembark from a black boat with a white awning and a Cayman Islands flag towards the rear. About 14 others stand on the pier; some of whom receive hugs or handshakes from the Obamas. The former president grabs two bags from the boat, follows Michelle, their entourage and security, toward four white vehicles waiting on the pavement atop the gangway. Another boat docked bearing the name Marina Rescate carried two individuals wearing orange uniforms monitoring the visit.
“I have tremendous respect for the former first family,” Tom Summers said to me on January 25, “to see them traveling in Baja California South really warmed my heart.”
Summers, a 73-year-old Navy veteran, has driven to Loreto several times, about 700 miles south of his Imperial Beach home.
“I was there with my friend Alex in July and early August,” he said. “I’m sure there was a huge level of security there, which is one of the reasons why they hurried up Barack Obama.”
The two-minute video footage was sped up in certain sections, then slowed back down. At the 45-second mark, the Obamas walk toward and board one of the four white vehicles; as another white vehicle pulls up, the five vehicles take off. The drone then ascends as the motorcade travels westbound, away from the Sea of Cortez.
“Just inland from Loreto, are these beautiful, craggy silhouetted mountain ranges, and then you got the desert that leads up to it,” Summers said.
As the caravan leaves the malecon (thoroughfare along the waterfront), they are lead and tailed by what appears to be police units.
Screenshot from drone footage of the Obamas and their entourage
“I can tell you, they are [likely] going to a place ten miles south of town, where this Canadian development is,” Summers said, “where all these really nice places are. I know the chief of security down there (at the development); he used to live here in San Diego.”
Summers is a retired tugboat engineer for Foss Maritime Company and worked on superyachts in Chile and New Zealand.
“I noticed the big yacht in the background,” he said, “something that big is not a common sight down there.”
On January 20, Mexican news outlets reported filmmaker Steven Spielberg’s “near-$200 million” yacht docked in Loreto Bay.
“What should’ve been discreet quickly became an event in this community after the American ex-president kindly agreed to take pictures with several people during his arrival who began posting these images on Facebook,” said Javier Chavez Davis, a Loreto news reporter.
“The arrival [of the Obamas] was at approximately 9 pm at the Loreto International Airport in a private plane and under discreet but very extensive security measures. The distinguished visitors were quickly transferred to the Loreto dock, later to board the famous Seven Seas yacht owned by Steven Spielberg, in which [they] will be touring the Loreto Islands.
“It should be noted that for several days a strong activity of embassy personnel, intelligence bodies of both countries and high-level tourism services companies, began to prepare this arrival under all possible discretion, which definitely broke down thanks to the how quickly the [Facebook] images were made public today (January 20).”
“I was surprised that there was drone footage,” Summers said.
“It’s likely a Mexican drone pilot because Americans are not allowed to fly drones in Mexico,” continued Summer’s friend.
There were hundreds of comments below the drone footage posted and shared online, but none mentioned if Spielberg was a part of the group with the Obamas.
“Some of these superyachts have two helicopter pads,” Summers added, “the owners rarely ride the yachts between destinations; they chopper in. And some of these billionaire superyachts have moon pools: a submarine docking system. So they come and go completely unobserved.”

She was seen in Madrid, Spain, earlier this month, and the Spanish island of Mallorca days before that. Now, she's living it up in Italy
Tom and Rita have been close with the Obamas for quite some time now, and in 2016, Barack even awarded the actor with the Presidential Medal of Freedom

Tom and Rita were also seen vacationing with the Obama family in Greece in June. He's seen during their snorkeling trip in Italy this week
Michelle's latest trip comes just weeks after a convicted felon made wild gay sex claims about her husband
Despite her husband being shrouded in scandal, Michelle seemed completely at ease throughout the trip
Earlier this month, con man Larry Sinclair alleged that Barack, 62, performed oral sex on him twice in Chicago in 1999
He also claimed to have witnessed Barack buying and smoking cocaine during an appearance on former Fox host Tucker Carlson's show
Larry first made the claims in 2008, while Barack was gearing up to run for president, but his accusations were roundly condemned as an attempted political hatchet-job
And in July, the couple, along with their daughters, visited Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts - where Barack was spotted playing golf and Michelle hit the tennis courts.
A few weeks prior to that, photographers caught them grabbing lunch on the stunning Greek island Sifnos with Tom, Rita, Malia, and Sasha.
In May, they headed to California to cheer on their youngest daughter, Sasha Obama, walk at her graduation from the University of Southern California.
That same month, Michelle and Barack vacationed in Barcelona, Spain - where they hiked to the Montserrat monastery with Steven and went to a Bruce Springsteen concert.

Larry - who has a lengthy criminal history, including convictions on forgery, fraud and larceny charges, and has served prison time in Arizona, Florida, and Colorado - first made the claims in 2008, while Barack was gearing up to run for president.
At the time, his accusations were roundly condemned as an attempted political hatchet-job. He has never offered any proof of his claims against the former president.
Larry's claims were given a new lease of life last month, however, after The New York Post released a letter written by Barack in 1982, when he was 21 years old, to his girlfriend Alex McNear.
In it, he wrote that he 'loves making love to men daily, but in the imagination,' according to the publication.

Back in November, the 59-year-old mother-of-two opened up about how she keeps her lean physique , explaining that her outlook on exercising changed after she went through menopause.
Michelle was once nicknamed the 'Drillmaster' in her friend group due to her intense regimen, and she became well-known during her husband's presidency for constantly showing off her toned arms.
She explained that she's less concerned about looking muscular and 'beating everyone' around her now, and instead, said she's simply determined to stay 'physically active' and to 'keep moving.'
'Some of it is menopause, some of it is aging,' she said of the change in her gym routine.
'I find that I cannot push myself as hard as I used to. That doesn't work out for me. That when I tear a muscle or pull something and then I'm out. The recovery time is not the same.
'If I can walk and move, I don't have to run. I don't have to beat everyone. I've had to change the way I see myself in my health space.
'You wind up balancing between staying fit enough and being kind enough on your body to stay in the game.
'I am still physically active, and my goal now, instead of having "Michelle Obama arms," I just want to keep moving.'

Michelle Obama vacationing with celebs on Spielberg’s superyacht off Italian coast, snorkels with Tom Hanks
Former first lady Michelle Obama was reportedly spotted vacationing off the coast of Italy with a slew of multimillionaire celebrities.
According to an exclusive report from the Daily Mail , the group — including Obama; actor Tom Hanks; his wife, Rita; director Steven Spielberg; and his wife, Kate Capshaw — started off on Spielberg’s $250 million superyacht.
From there, they climbed into a “smaller vessel” and then headed out for what the Daily Mail describes as “a day of snorkeling.”
“During the boat ride, the stars chatted as they soaked up the Italian sun and took in the stunning views,” according to the Daily Mail.

Obama reportedly wore a one-piece bathing suit, while Hanks began the journey with a white t-shirt but later tore it off and went shirtless. When it came time to snorkel, all of them donned a gray swim top reportedly to protect themselves from jellyfish and stinging algae.
“Michelle was spotted departing from the watercraft from a ladder, with a snorkel and mask resting on her head,” the Daily Mail notes.”Afterwards, they wrapped up in some beige towels and sipped on some sodas as they made their way back to the yacht.”
The yacht reportedly measures 357 feet and contains two swimming pools, a movie theater, and even a helicopter landing pad.
Obama has reportedly been vacationing throughout Europe for several weeks now: “She was seen in Madrid, Spain, earlier this month, and the Spanish island of Mallorca days before that,” the Daily Mail notes.
This isn’t the first time she or her husband, former President Barack Obama, have spent time with Hanks and his wife.
In late June, the former first lady, the former president, and their two daughters met up with Hanks and Wilson for lunch on the Greek island of Sifnos.

Like the more recent rendezvous, this one involved a yacht as well.
“An onlooker said that the party arrived on Paralia Seralia beach by dinghy – having come from a luxury yacht docked nearby. The fellow diner, who asked to remain anonymous, said: ‘I’m not one to get very starstruck – but seeing [Barack] Obama in the flesh and so close was pretty surreal,'” according to the Daily Mail .
“Their presence was pretty overwhelming and that definitely wasn’t lessened by the excessive security — who we even had to ask if we could use the restroom,” the anonymous fellow diner said.
The Obamas have reportedly been close with Hanks and his wife for a while now. Back in 2020, Hanks and his wife joined Michelle’s campaign to promote mail-in voting.
“Former First Lady Michelle Obama had a few special guests — namely, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson — with her at Monday night’s voter registration event with When We All Vote. The couple, who like Obama are co-chairs of the nonpartisan group, joined her and thousands of volunteers and others for a literal call-to-action on Monday night before the second When We All Vote #CouchParty,” People magazine reported at the time.
And in April of 2017, both Obamas gathered on a 450-foot yacht with Hanks and a few other celebrities, including Oprah Winfrey and Bruce Springsteen.
“On Apr. 10, the famous five all gathered on the 450-foot yacht, The Rising Sun — owned by billionaire David Geffen — off the coast of Tahiti. The group enjoyed lunch on Vanilla Island, made a stop at Le Taha’a Island and continued to Bora Bora,” People magazine confirmed at the time.
“In addition, Hanks [revealed that] he and the former President and First Lady rented bikes to sightsee on shore. While the group, including the Secret Service, had ‘an array of bikes’ to choose from, the Oscar winner and Medal of Freedom recipient was stuck with ‘an undersized, girl’s bike,'” according to People.
“It was rusted like all over, it only had one gear … all the others were like mountain bikes … it was so bad,” Hanks later recalled while on “The Late Show.”

Describing his discussions with the Obamas, Hanks went on to say that at one point he asked the former president if he could divulge any “classified” information.
“I’d like to share a ton of stories from it, but they’re classified,” the former president reportedly replied.

Why Michelle Obama's Italy Trip With Tom Hanks Had The Internet Up In Arms
Michelle Obama hanging out with celebrities should not be shocking news, but she caused quite a stir when she rubbed elbows with Hollywood A-listers while on a European vacation. In September 2023, the paparazzi snapped photos of the former first lady on a yacht off the coast in Italy with Tom Hanks. The "Forrest Gump" star was also joined by his wife Rita Wilson along with Steven Spielberg and his wife Kate Capshaw. What made the excursion notable was that Barack Obama was not aboard the ship, or even in the country. At one point on the yacht, Hanks ditched his top and went shirtless, while Michelle sported a white one-piece. Michelle seemed to be enjoying the getaway, as she was also photographed snorkeling. Some were convinced however that the Italian vacation was a red flag in Michelle and Barack Obama's marriage .
As photos of the former FLOTUS in Italy with Hanks made the rounds (above), several people could not get over the fact that her husband stayed stateside. "More importantly, why is Michelle Obama vacationing in Europe with Tom Hanks and a bunch of celebrities for months without Barack?" one X , formerly Twitter, user wrote. Days after the yacht pics were published, the Obamas celebrated their wedding anniversary, but some worried there may have been trouble in paradise. "Barack and Michelle haven't been seen together in quite some time," an X user wrote while quote-tweeting Barack's anniversary tweet.
It appeared those causing a stir did not know the truth about Tom Hanks' friendship with Barack Obama .
Tom Hanks had vacationed with the Obamas in the past
There may have been some sordid speculation about Michelle Obama spending time in Italy with Tom Hanks, but the truth of the matter was the "Captain Phillips" star is friends with both her and Barack Obama. A few months before the yacht excursion, Michelle and Barack had dinner with Hanks and Rita Wilson in Greece, per the Daily Mail . The former POTUS and first lady also brought their two daughters.
In fact, the Obamas have a history of hanging out on yachts with "The Green Mile" actor. They were photographed spending time on a 450-foot yacht together in Tahiti in April 2017. Oprah Winfrey and Bruce Springsteen were also along for the ride. Afterwards, the talk show magnate was tight-lipped about their vacation. "What happens on the boat, stays on the boat," Winfrey jokingly told People at the time.
The same month that photos of the star-studded yacht voyage leaked, Hanks offered up some details about his time with Michelle and Barack. "Look, imagine what it could've been like it, triple it. It was off the scale, fantastic," Hanks playfully said while speaking about the Polynesian getaway on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" in April 2017. Similar to Winfrey, the actor joked that his time with the presidential couple was a private matter. "I'd like to share a ton of stories from it, but they're classified," Hanks said. Besides vacationing together, Hanks and the Obamas had a long history of meeting up at professional and personal events.
Tom Hanks gave and received awards with the Obamas
When Barack Obama held his 50th birthday in August 2011, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson were invited. The guestlist was around 200 people, and the party was held at the Rose Garden in the White House. A decade later, the "Philadelphia" actor had stayed in touch with the Obamas as Hanks was also present for Barack's 60th birthday party, which sparked some outrage . It was a more intimate gathering as the former president and Michelle Obama had "scaled back" the invite list since it took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, per the New York Post .
Not only was Hanks close enough with the Obamas to earn birthday party invite, and go on European vacations together, he also participated in formal affairs with the presidential couple. In October 2019, Michelle was given an award created by the "Saving Private Ryan" star — the Hanks Caregiver Champion award, which is presented to people who offered extraordinary service to military caregivers. The former FLOTUS gave a moving speech. "You all changed me forever," Michelle said, per People . "You have changed the way I see service, you've changed the way I see war, you've changed the way I see this entire country."
Five years earlier, it was Hanks who was on the receiving end of an award presented by Barack. The then-president presented Hanks with the Kennedy Center honors. "Because no matter what party you belong to, everybody wants a selfie with Tom Hanks," host Stephen Colbert joked during the event, per the BBC .
