Kelly Peterson 44
I''m getting ready to buy what will be my home for next 10 or 15 years. Plan circumnavigating/liveaboard life. Want a strong, seaworthy yet comfortable boat. All of my research has the Peterson 44 way out in front. I have not found any negative comments about this boat anywhere (unusual). Any comments from experience here?

The Kelly Peterson 44 would be quite high on my list of offshore boats if I was going to go the heavier displacement cruiser route. They generally offer really nice sailing capabilities combined with decent accomodations. They offer a tremendous amount of boat for the money. On the negative side, They tend to be deep, I have seen listings that show them with between 6''1" and 7''-0 draft. Also early KP44''s has black iron fuel and water tanks. These are now approaching the end of their useful lifespan. Apparently early KP 44''s used a lot of glassed in wood in their mast supporting structures and over time these can be rot out and becoem problematic. Lastly many KP 44''s have teak decks which can be a major maintenance issue as a boat ages and water can get down in the deck coring and rot it out. As a contrast I would suggest also looking at Brewer 12.8''s. These are keel centerboard cutters and offer a similar interior plan and similar sailing characteristics but in a shoal draft. My father has one (which he will be putting on the market before too long) that has proven to be an excellent boat for distant cruising. Regards Jeff

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.
What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?
The capsize screening value for Kp 44 is 1.67, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.
What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?
The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 8.4 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.
The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Kp 44 is about 320 kg/cm, alternatively 1793 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 320 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1793 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

| 46. What i have learnt so far is the following.
a. A 46 is an extended version of the KP 44
b. There is no such thing as a Petersen 46 only a K.P. 46
c. The KP'S are a higher build quality then the Formosa's
But how do i tell a genuine K.P 46 from a Formosa 46 .
I'm about to make an offer on a KP 46 but i think it may be a Formosa 46 !
The yacht i want to buy has the table on the port side and has decks .

The one I used to own was a Stevens Yacht 44 that was the version that was (I believe) only different in that it didnt have decks(thank heaven) and lots more tankage than the KP44. It also didnt come with the for a staysail. It had the for the staysail, but not the fittings. I was on board a few KP44s and never noticed any other difference. I was only on board one Formosa 46 and found the differences to be mostly cosmetic ie, the style of the woodwork was different, but not better or worse, it had teak decks(ugh) and I think some minor differences. I actually liked the F46 in that it had a difference in the chain plates(i dont remember what the difference was) and it had a nice deep sump under the . The Stevens 44 didnt have much of a sump, and I thought it should have. I also delivered a KP44 from to Calif and found very few differences. My 44 had a 4-154 and the F46 that I was on had a Ford(Lehman) and the one I delivered had a 4-108. They are all wonderful sailing but all of the should be closely inspected, and the black iron . I think Jack Kelly Yachts is still in buisiness, so you might want to contact them for more information. Also do the search feature here, since I think they have been discussed before. The Formosa's are built by one of the lower quality chinese yards. Likely way over built as far as goes though. Those teak decks have most likley saturated the of the sub . IF someone has done a bunch of , it could be a great boat. If not it could be a big . Not sure which one you are looking at, but there was one in the last year at pretty much a give away ..(29K?)
Everyone seems to like the design ....
The Formosa may have a much nicer teak , some of the KP44's had a pretty plainish with a lot of white surfaces... kinda nice if you like it though. - Elmore Leonard

I very much liked the lockers on the aft deck. I Thought that the cubby hole of a shop was a good idea, but wondered what they did with the that was in that spot on the 44. I also didnt like the being cut up by the entrance to the work shop. I also was not impressed by the front opening fridge that seems more suited to a queen than a sea boat. The interior is stunningly beautiful and looks good for port or sea. I still think that any of the Peterson 44/46 variants that pass a rigid will make a wonderful boat. Since all of these are at least 23 years old and some are close to 40 years old, the teak decks and especially the should be very closely inspected.
