Chrysler 22 Owners.....Heeelp!!!
windchaser22Now that I have a problem, I find that I have mis-placed the forum address for Chrysler owners. Would someone be kind enough to give it to me, or possibly answer the question right away?....What is my swing keel made of? Is it cast or forged iron?I need to do a welding job to fill in the elongated Pin Hole and need to know the material. The original Chrysler web-site has the specs, but not the materials. Thanks to anyone who can help.Happy Sailing. Chrysler Owners Try Chryslersailors.com Nope, that's not it! But Thanks. There's another one I can't find....I'll just have to keep on lookin' sonofasailorsailingTry this one Chrysler sailing association Cast Iron Iron is too brittle (high carbon content) and has no elasticity to be able to forge. You must be thinking of wrought iron. It is also not wrought iron. Wrought iron is steel. It is cast iron. You would be better served to braze the hole in the keel or fill it with an epoxy. Cast iron, due to its porosity and brittle characteristics does not weld well. Jim Go to the local machine shop. Have your centerboard drilled out and have the shop install a bushing to fit the spec.s required. This is a very simple repair and not too expensive. It is also a permanent repair. Ray [email protected]Swing Keel I replaced the keel pin and bracket on my Chrysler 22 several years ago. The keel is made out of cast iron and weighs 725 pounds. I didn't weigh it, but, there are several different weights listed in articles and specifications. I replaced the bracket and pin with stainless steel. I had a machine shop do the work. It cost $450 for the bracket. It is quite a job to replace it. Unless you are set up to handle 725 pounds and reasonable competent to do the work, I suggest that you have a yard do it for you. That would usually mean that the job would cost more than the boat. Go to www.cashflowfactory.com/keelrepair/index.html for an article on the replacement of the brackets exactly like yours. You can also e-mail me for more info.Good luck,Richard MANY THANKS FOR EVERYONE'S HELP... Hi Richard,Many thanks for your reply. Yesterday was a "fun" day. I replaced the Pin Mounting plates and then spent about a half hour with a welder discussing the options. He too advised against attempting to weld-fill the elongated hole, in that it would have to be done in a shop and it's not cheap. This is due to all of the additional labor involved in heating the iron and maintaining the heat 24 hours after the weld.based on the fact that the wear took 28 years to reach this point, and that the heaviest part of the keel is in the elongation's path; it would probably take 40 years or better to move another 3".He advised against brazing for this appllication, for several reasons and we all decided to put the keel back up and call it a day.Hopefully, the only leak I had was from the Pin Brackets....which have now been removed, cleaned meticulously and re-installed with lots of 5200.Happy Sailing,Ralp Ooops!! I spelled my own name incorrectly... It's Ralph. (I hate when I do that)Happy Sailing Lee WaldronChrysler website http://chryslersailing.lizards.net/Hope this helps.BTW, the keel is cast steel. Chrysler 22
I am looking at a Chrysler 22 that has been neglected. I dont mind the clean up and small repairs that it needs but would like to know how she sails. She also needs new sheets but I can get it for a song. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Just a side note: For the last year I have had the sailing itch.....Dont know where it came from or why but I see no cure other than learning to sail. Have read all that I could read "Which has now become my hobbie". Would this boat be sufficient for learning? I have a Chrysler 26, I believe her to be a good sailboat. Has a lot of room and reasonably quick. If you would like to chat with other C22 owners check out this website Chrysler Sailors :: Index Nice heavy boat with lots of room below, could sleep 5, v-berth on it is bigger than most 25-27 footers I am looking at. Also good stowage on a boat that size. Much heavier and stable than the Catalina 22, but I know someone who races and beats C22s with his. Cockpit not so roomy especially with the tiller swing, more than 2 will have to sit people on the rail or low side. It is a fun capable trailer sailor. Expect around 5000 lbs fully loaded on trailer. I owned a 26 with sail drive for more than 10 years and loved it. Did much of my basic sail training on a 19 Chrysler Buccaneer which was great for day-sails. Chrysler made them sturdy and many of them are still in use by clubs and individuals. The wonderful Excise Tax of the 70's killed the company's boat division off as it did most of the US's smaller builders and some large ones. Can see similar things occurring now. there are a couple on Craigslist in the Appleton, WI area. I was going to look at them, but found mine in Iowa, so I'm ready to go. The two in WI were in various need of repair. One was $1500 and the ohter $2400. Neither had galley stoves, but one had a wheel steering modification. Edit: Never mind, I misread your post to say you were looking for one, rather than at one.

Chrysler 22 FKChrysler 22 FK is a 21 ′ 7 ″ / 6.6 m monohull sailboat designed by Halsey Herreshoff and built by Chrysler Marine starting in 1975. Rig and SailsAuxilary power, accomodations, calculations. The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more. Classic hull speed formula: Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL Sail Area / Displacement RatioA measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more. SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
Ballast / Displacement RatioA measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize. Ballast / Displacement * 100 Displacement / Length RatioA measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more. D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
Comfort RatioThis ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more. Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
Capsize Screening FormulaThis formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more. CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64) Embed this page on your own website by copying and pasting this code.

40 to 50 indicates a heavy bluewater boat; over 50 indicates an extremely heavy bluewater boat. Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam^1.33), where displacement is expressed in pounds, and length is expressed in feet. Capsize Screening Formula (CSF): Designed to determine if a boat has blue water capability.
According to the BUC Research Used Boat Price Guide, Chrysler first offered recreational boats in 1957, building three aluminum runabouts and cruisers from 16′ to 21′. Its first fiberglass boat was the Caribbean 19′ cruiser in 1958. The Buccaneer was the first sailboat in the Chrysler line, introduced in 1971. The Chrysler 22 appeared in ...

Bolt it to the hinged mast step with a 1/4" x 4" bolt and lock (nylon insert) nut. The 1/4" bolt hole in the mast is near the spreaders. Put a rubber washer on the bolt on each side of the mast to keep it from wearing on the hinged mast step. Make sure the nut is tight. If it comes off, things could get very bad.

One feature that's found on most boats but is missing on a C22 is a anchor and rode locker in the bow. Despite the user manual instructions, it's virtually impossible to step the mast by yourself. Do NOT, under any circumstances, expect this boat to go fast. Eight knots is the best I've been able to do, even after careening.
