And while most people want to join the frenzy by saving up to buy their own boat, other clever cats join in on the big business by selling the boats. Yachts in particular can sell for a very pretty penny. So hopping in on the craze by starting a career as a yacht broker might get you a sweet slice of that $41 billion dollar business.

But although it might seem pretty lucrative to become a yacht broker, you can't really just head to the dealership and take on the role. On the contrary, there are quite a few hoops you might have to jump through to start a career in the yacht sales business. Wondering how to become a yacht broker? Here's what the job requires.

Basic Knowledge of the Business

First of all - would you buy a car from a guy who's never driven one? Exactly. Before you even think about becoming a yacht broker, you have to make sure you know what to tell your buyers. First hand experience with yachts should give you the upper hand in the business so that you know exactly how to sell a boat's good points and how to take attention away from its flaws.

Yacht brokers need to know the need-to-knows of the business. If you don't have a boat of your own, then you can visit your local marina and talk with the boat owners there. Visit a dealership and ask about boat specifics. You can even do research at home. It pays to know everything there is to know about boats if you want to really get your buyers to seal the deal especially if you don't have a lot of sales experience yet.

CPYB Certification

For the record - certification isn't required if you're wondering how to become a yacht broker. In fact, not a single brokerage requires it since they're more interested in experience in sales and skills. But it is helpful for buyers who want to make sure they’re dealing with someone with a good sales record.

That's exactly what certification is for. Presently, only the Yacht Brokers Association of America ( YBAA ) offers a course for certifying brokers, providing the title Certified Professional Yacht Broker (CPYB.) Applicants must be able to provide several documents to start the certification process. These include:

  • Proof of present employment as a yacht broker for at least 1 year
  • Proof of employment as a yacht broker for at least three years in the past 10 year period
  • Proof of ethical yacht sales and necessary documentation
  • A dedicated escrow/trust account for all client funds in trust
  • Where applicable, the individual holds all necessary licenses required by the local government
  • No violations for the last seven years of any surety or Codes of Ethics of any brokerage organizations or groups that the applicant is a part of
  • Pass the CPYB exam

Individuals who comply with these requirements (among several others) are eligible to obtain certification as a Certified Professional Yacht Broker from the Yacht Brokers Association of America.

Alternatively E-learning courses and seminars are also helpful for developing skills. The Association offers courses on warranties, insurance, marketing, co-brokerage, and all of the nitty gritty details of being a yacht broker.

These e-seminars can be helpful in providing insight so you can navigate the work of selling boats, offering important knowledge on specifics that you might not be able to find anywhere else.

Do You Need a License for a Yacht Brokers Career?

To be clear, there are very few states that actually require a yacht broker to have a license . As of writing, only the states of Florida , California, and Virginia require yacht brokers a license to practice their trade through the local government. Other states have no yacht sales regulations.

The requirements for acquiring a license change between states, but you might expect some of these requirements to pop up during the process:

  • At least 18 years of age
  • A fixed place of business
  • Employed as a yacht broker as your primary occupation in another state for at least three years OR
  • Own and operate a business selling new or used yachts in the state for at least three years immediately after applying for a license OR
  • Employed as a licensed yacht broker for at least a year out of the last five years in the state
  • Relevant certification from the YBAA and licenses

These are a must for licenses in California, but Florida and Virginia might require completely different documents and regulations. Licensing process fees can cost you between $200 and $300 to become a licensed broker, depending on the place you're in. It may be helpful to check locally to get a better idea.

Renewal of licensing may have to take place annually depending on local regulations, but it can be different for different states. In some cases, you might also have to complete and pass a written exam to ensure that you're knowledgeable on the specifics of the industry before you can become a licensed broker.

Education, Degree, and School Requirements for the Career

Is a degree a must to become a yacht broker? Yacht brokerages will usually prefer employing yacht brokers with at least a Bachelor's Degree, but it's not uncommon for high school graduates to get jobs as yacht brokers. Of course, a college education and a Bachelor's Degree in business, marketing, sales, or any other related course can be helpful, but you will find it's not always a must in most states.

Selling yachts and sealing deals aren't really skills they teach you at high school -- you get that from years of sales experience. If you've got the chops to make sales and you know the ins and outs of yachts, then it shouldn't be impossible to get a job as a yacht broker -- even without a college degree or an extensive background in school based education especially if you pass the brokerage's exam and requirements.

How Much Do Yacht Brokers Make?

What's a yacht broker salary like? Yacht brokers work on a commission just like any other broker or salesperson career, which means that they make more when they sell more. According to statistics, a successful yacht broker can make a salary of as much as $120,00 a year if they're dealing with higher end yacht models. But that's a very generous estimate of what real figures actually look like.

If we're being realistic, a yacht broker can make an average of about $70,000 a year. That places their weekly salary payout at around $1,300 to $1,400. Of course, peak seasons do exist where sales increase, earning them an extra $500 to $1,000 a week if they're lucky.

Another helpful piece of information is that the amount they get in terms of commissions isn't permanent. Most brokers will ask for 10% of the total sales, but there are net commissions and percentage commissions.

With a net commission agreement, the broker gets the exact amount agreed with the clients regardless of whether or not the yacht is sold for a lower or higher price after negotiations. On the other hand, percentage commissions will earn the broker a specific percentage of the successful sales, which is affected by negotiations made on the sale.

You'll also have to consider the situation if there's a broker working for the buying end as well. The listing broker and selling broker will often have to split the commission from the sales. So if the clients agree to pay a 10% commission on the sale, the brokers won't get 10% each, but will instead get 5% each for a total cut of 10%.

Tips on How to Become a Yacht Broker

  • First of all - connections are key in this career. Expand your network by visiting boat shows, dealerships, and other places where you can meet new people in the industry.
  • It's helpful to ask a pro. Find and train at a yacht brokerage under licensed or experienced yacht brokers with lots of sales experience to get a better idea of the intricacies of the sale and relevant skills and knowledge.
  • You must learn to accept rejection. Yachts are expensive, and even the most interested buyers can back off of a deal when their budget won't allow it.
  • Maintain previous contacts. Prospective buyers who didn't push through in the past might be more comfortable to purchase a boat later in the future. It may be helpful to keep in touch.
  • Be likable. You and your competition are all selling the same boats. It's your personality that will make all of the difference.
  • Go online. A lot of your prospective buyers exist on the internet. If you want to reach a wider audience, try your hand at online marketing.
  • Be teachable. If you don't have a lot of experience or a degree in marketing or business, make up for the school deficit by attending seminars and learning courses to expand your knowledge and skills.

Yacht and Ships – Licensing

In order to obtain a license as a Yacht Salesperson, an individual must complete an Initial Application, Application for a Yacht and Ship Employing Broker, Broker or Salesperson’s License – DBPR Form YS 6000-1 , obtain a $10,000 Surety Bond or Letter of Credit, submit a Fingerprint Card and a $51 fee or go to a Livescan vendor that is registered with FDLE for criminal background processing (NOTE: The Livescan vendor will charge you directly for the fingerprint scan), submit a $500 application fee, and provide information regarding affiliation under the license of a Florida Employing Broker on the application.  The licensure period for a Yacht and Ship license is biennial (2 years) and upon completion of the first 2 consecutive years, a Yacht Salesperson may be eligible to upgrade their license to the status of a Yacht Broker or Employing Broker, both with the requirement of a $25,000 surety bond.

The basic duties of a Yacht Salesperson and a Yacht Broker are similar with the main difference being the Yacht Broker status indicates additional experience in the industry.  Employing Brokers (and all licensees) must maintain a principal place of business in Florida, and have the option of being in sole practice or employing other Yacht Salespersons or Yacht Brokers in their company.  If required, there may be more than one Employing Broker within each company.  Employing Brokers also have the additional requirement of establishing an escrow (trust) account in a Florida financial institution.  Effective July 01, 2020, licenses are no longer required for a Branch Office.

No later than 60 days prior to a license expiration date, all licensees are notified by mail with a Renewal Application, Application for Yacht and Ship License Renewal – DBPR Form YS 6000-6 .  Licensees can then submit their renewal along with the required Surety Bond, Bond Continuation Certificate, or Letter of Credit ( see sample form ), and the $500 renewal fee.  During renewal, if eligible, licensees may also upgrade their license status from Yacht Salesperson to Yacht Broker or Employing Broker, or downgrade their license from Employing Broker to Yacht Broker or Yacht Salesperson, or from Yacht Broker to Yacht Salesperson.  Upgrades and downgrades may also be completed at any time during the biennial licensure period.  Please note:  If license renewals are not submitted 30 days after the expiration of the license, the licensee may need to reapply for licensure.

The Yacht and Ship Section announces a new online option that allows Yacht and Ship licensees the ability to renew their licenses online and receive expedited approval.  Renewal notices will continue to be mailed to licensees 60 days prior to their license expiration, and once received, a licensee can visit DBPR’s ‘Online Services’ at https://www.myfloridalicense.com/activateaccountinstruct.asp to access the online renewal site.  At this site, licensees can set up an account by clicking on ‘Renew Your License’ then selecting ‘Yacht and Ship’.   Please note, licensees can still elect to submit a paper application and supporting documents if that process is more convenient.

Who needs a Florida Yacht Broker License?

Florida defines a “Yacht” as any vessel in the water exceeding 32 feet. Additionally, this includes vessels powered by wind and/or motors. The previous definition comes with a few exceptions, however. These exceptions are selling your own yacht, attorneys, new yacht sales, receivers, and foreclosures.

Do I need a Yacht Broker License or a Florida Yacht Salesmen License?

Ah, which comes first? The chicken or the egg? Unfortunately, Florida requires that all salesmen be licensed and work for a licensed broker. However, you can’t get a Florida Yacht Broker License unless you’ve been a yacht salesmen for two consecutive years. So, you’ll need to first become a salesperson if you wish to open your own brokerage.

How much does each license cost?

We mentioned above that there are two license types. However, both licenses cost the same. That’s right. The cost for a yacht salesmen license is the same as the yacht broker license. Each of these licenses will cost you $551. Additionally, you can add another brokerage location for $100.

What else do I need for my Yacht Broker and Salesmen license?

In addition to the state fee, you’ll need a few other items. For example: You’ll need to provide fingerprints, a completed application, and a surety bond. However, the surety bond amounts aren’t the same. The Florida Yacht Salesmen License requires a $10,000 bond while the Yacht Broker License requires a $25,000 bond. Professional yacht brokering is an appealing career for many people who have a maritime background and live close to the water. How does one go about becoming a yacht broker? What steps should you take in order to successfully become a licensed broker? Let’s look at some fundamental requirements one must consider in the pursuit of becoming a broker.

It’s important to understand the industry of boating before diving into this career path. Being familiar with different boat brands is key; you wouldn’t start selling cars with any knowledge of car brands. This will serve as a base for understanding the prices, quality, performance, and manufacturing quality of individual yachts. Having this basic comprehension will pave the way for smooth sailing when dealing with experienced and amateur customers.

Certifications:

The Yacht Brokers Association of America strongly recommends that new brokers receive their CPYB (Certified Professional Yacht Broker). This certification is not mandatory for yacht brokering, but it puts potential customers in a more comfortable situation. To become eligible for certification, one must have at least three years in sales/yacht brokerage, a history of using and maintaining legal contracts, required licenses, and proof of appropriate trust accounts. The certification process concludes with an exam that determines if one is fit to become a certified broker.

Only a few states actually require new yacht brokers to have a license. States that do require one will need to see evidence of a background in sales, more specifically experience under another licensed broker. Another portion of states will require an administered background check in order to continue the licensing process. Next, yacht brokers may have to take out surety bonds in order to protect their clients and themselves in case of a financial emergency. After acquiring your license, it’s important to note that state rules and regulations state that you must renew your license pending a specific amount of time.

A bachelor’s degree is the standard to find employment in yacht brokering, although having a GED or no formal higher-level education could be sufficient depending on the situation. Ultimately, having a strong knowledge of boats and boating culture can take you far in this field, it is more than possible to become successful in yacht brokering without a college degree.

I consider becoming a yacht broker one of the best decisions I have ever made.

In 2016 I jumped feet first into the yacht, boat, and ship brokerage industry with little experience but with incredible passion. Selling yachts was my first job out of college and is still my only post graduation job, aside from working on this website and building other websites.

I even turned down a job offer from Google to work in the yacht industry!

One of the many benefits, in my opinion, of being a yacht broker is that the job is semi seasonal. While the definition of seasonal will change depending on where you work, not being busy for the full 12 months allows me time to offshore fish, build websites , travel, and much more.

How I Became A Yacht Broker

While in college I started a drone photography and videography business as drones, at the time, were still new to market and the barrier to entry was high.

I started by filming short video clips for car dealerships and real estate agents, but I wanted to incorporate my passions of saltwater fishing and yachts with photography.

One day I cold emailed the most reputable “fishing centric” yacht brokerage in San Diego, California and offered my drone services free of charge. Fast forwarding, this free video offer lead to monthly paid work for over a year. During this year period I was becoming more immersed in saltwater fishing and built up a small following on social media.

Upon graduating from college, I approached the owner and asked for a sales position at the brokerage, to which I was added to the team immediately. Over the last 9 years, I have been responsible for the sale of over $60 million in yachts and boats.

How Much Does A Yacht Broker Make?

Researching the compensation for a particular industry or position is important before making a career move.

In most cases, a yacht broker is not paid a salary, rather paid solely on commission. The standard industry commission is 10% based on the selling price of the vessel. This means compensation can range from $100,000 to over $1 million per year.

In my experience, the harder you work the more you will earn as the job is purely commission. There will be months, or several months, where you don’t bring home any income, but when the season is in full swing you will be glad you’re paid on commission and not salary.

Yacht Broker License Information

It’s fairly easy to become a yacht broker or a yacht salesperson. These terms often get lumped together as the same, however a broker owns the company where the salesperson “hangs” their license under.

Only two states in the United States required a license to sell yachts and boats. Florida requires a license for those selling vessels over 32’ that are not their own, and California requires a license for those selling vessel over 16’ that are not their own. The other 48 states are more lax, so I would suggest speaking to a local brokerage in your state about their rules.

How You Can Become A Yacht Broker

Nearly anyone can become a yacht broker or a yacht salesperson, but not everyone will succeed at the job. Below is a list of traits and actions that can help you get into the category of yacht brokers who earn a substantial living.

1. Be Driven 

As mentioned earlier, this job is purely commission based so you need an excellent work ethic and a “go getter” attitude in order to generate income. Yes you can sit back and not do much work, but when starting out and building your client base, this will lead to lackluster results. Be willing to walk the docks, advertise, leverage social media, and look for opportunities to spread your name and services.

There will be some months where you don’t earn any money, just know that this will happen and be prepared. Have some money set aside to get through the slow times, but on the contrary, when the market is on fire, the sales come quick and steady. 

In any business, honesty is vital for longterm success. Boats and yachts have countless systems and nuances, so when asked a question you don’t have the answer to, simply say you do not know but will find out. Follow up with your client the same day with the answer.

When it comes to negotiations, stick to your guns and don’t become intimidated. There is a time and place to offer a reduced commission or to help bridge a survey allowance gap, but don’t make this your automatic go to.

2. Have A Passion For Boats and Yachts

Your body language and attitude, whether intentful or not, will be analyzed by prospective buyers and sellers, and if you don’t show passion for what you’re talking about, then this will be apparent.

Many buyers and sellers have chosen to work with me because they could sense my drive and passion for their needs. I highly encourage you to be genuinely excited to show or preview a vessel because you can always learn something new, plus the water is your office…it doesn’t get much better than that.

Having prior sales experience will be helpful in making a seamless transition into the yacht sales industry, but I’ve found it’s not a requirement. As your deal flow increases, transactions will become easier but for the first year or two there will be a lot of learning moments throughout the sales cycle.

When starting out, take as many listing as you can to get experience learning about different boat platforms and brands, as well as work out all the kinks that can arise during negotiations, paperwork and closing.

3. Excellent Communication and Follow Up

This section separates excellent brokers from mediocre brokers. While this may be the most important aspects of the job, I think it requires the least amount of text.

  • Always tell the truth and be honest…if an unpleasant conversation needs to be had, do it quickly and with a phone call opposed to sending an email
  • Always stay in contact with your clients…whether they are a prospect, in contract on a boat, or a past client, maintain contact often
  • Follow up early and often…be preemptive in your communication, pre addressing and questions before they become questions…a simple text message or two sentence email with an update is often all that is needed for your client to instill additional trust in you

4. Contact Local Yacht Brokerages For An Open Position

Once you have a good understanding of what you’re entering in to, it’s time to start looking for a brokerage to work under.

If you’re totally new to the industry, I recommend using Google to find reputable brokerages in your area, or you can see which brokerages advertise in the back of Yachting Magazine or Marlin Magazine for example.

For those with some experience within the boating industry, you should have somewhat of an idea of which brokerage houses are the most reputable in your area.

There is no better way to land a job than walking in and asking to speak to the owner or manager. Bring a resume and be prepared if the decision maker wants to talk right then. Even if a position isn’t available today, stay in contact via email so that when an opening does occur your name comes to mind.

Selling yachts for a living has offered me many opportunities that I could have never had without this employment. If you’re ready to work hard, then I encourage you to take the plunge immediately. The first 12 months will be difficult, but after that the learning curve begins to flatten.

Career Pathway

Career path: There is not one single defined career path. In larger yachts many professional yacht crew retrain as yacht brokers in order to be able to come ashore and yet remain in contact with the marine world.

Salary: Can be from a starting level of commission only up to huge sums (millions) for a successful few who sell superyachts. The average annual salary for a yacht and small craft broker in the United Kingdom is around £38,000.

Duties: Finding clients who wish for their yacht to be sold, checking all legal aspects of the right to sell the vessel, obtaining a detailed and accurate description of the vessel, and presenting it in the best possible manner (without misleading). Promoting the vessel to obtain interest and organising viewings. Acting as the intermediary between buyers and sellers and being the glue that holds a sale together through the difficult times.

  • The applicant must provide proof that they have worked for at least 2 years during the past 10 years as a full-time yacht broker and that they are currently employed as a full-time yacht broker and has been for the past 1 year.
  • The applicant has not been convicted of a felony offense or equivalent within the previous seven years.
  • The brokerage firm/broker of record maintains a dedicated escrow/trust account that is used for all client funds in trust.
  • The brokerage firm/applicant currently holds all necessary licenses required by all applicable governmental entities.
  • All client payments are made payable to the brokerage firm/broker of record and not to individual brokers.
  • All client transactions are supported by fully executed, contractually sound written agreements, affording protection to both the buyer and seller.
  • All business conducted by the applicant complies in full with the CPYB Code of Ethics.
  • The applicant has not been found in violation of any other yacht broker association's Code of Ethics (of which they are a member) within the previous seven years.
  • Three references are required for the application:  two must be CPYB-certified individuals who can attest to the quality of your work.  One will be the Principal of the brokerage firm you work under who can attest to your years of experience. 

Application Fee:  The non-refundable $325 fee includes the exam fee and up to two retakes.  On the application, you will have the option to order The Guide, which is a recommended resource for exam preparation.

Two bodies recovered from the wreckage of the sunken Bayesian yacht have been confirmed as those of Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah. Diving teams were seen this afternoon taking a green body bag back to the port of Porticello where dozens of emergency services staff were waiting. They are the second and third victims of the shipwreck to be found after the remains of the yacht’s cook, Recaldo Thomas, was located shortly after the vessel sank. Aboard a Hand-Sailed Cruise Ship From Malaga to Lisbon

I reach the spot at the port where Sea Cloud Spirit is waiting for her voyage and find a crowd gathered. It’s understandable; the gleaming white windjammer, with her three huge masted sails, looks nothing like any of the other ships docked. At 450 feet long, tailing off into a gold-accented bow, with 4,951 square feet of sail curled and ready for release, watching the ship come into view is a wow-factor moment. I feel like I’ve taken a step back in time, unsure whether I feel more like a pirate or some sort of royal of yore. Either way, I’ve never set foot on a ship as impressive as this.

Sea Cloud Spirit is the newest in Sea Cloud Cruises’ fleet—a name that made an appearance on our Reader Choice Awards last year. With its trio of windjammers, setting sail on one of its handsome ships is a novel experience of the most sophisticated kind. It’s basically the floating version of taking a steam train through the countryside , evoking a romanticized bygone era where everyone sets off, bravely, to find adventure on unexplored lands.

That’s essentially what the original Sea Cloud , a now 90-year-old four-masted beauty, did. Once the largest private sailing yacht in the world, it was first commissioned under the name Hussar by Wall Street broker Edward Francis in 1931, who gave his glamorous cereal heiress wife, Marjorie Merriweather Post, a limitless budget to decorate its interior. She took on this role with gusto, furnishing it with a wealth of distinctive antiques and a characterful design, much of which you’ll still find inside today. Together they remained at sea for at least nine months a year, heading from one exotic destination to the next.

But all good things come to an end and the couple divorced in 1935. Marjorie became the sole owner, renamed it Sea Cloud and married a man who’d go on to become the US ambassador in Moscow. The ship thus went on to fulfill a number of political roles, including a stint in Leningrad as a floating diplomatic palace and use as a floating weather station during World War II, when its majestic masts were sadly demounted. After the war ended, a four-year refurbishment saw it restored to former glory and it now serves as the flagship for Sea Cloud Cruises alongside two newer ships, each honoring the traditional seamanship and style of the original.

You won’t find any of Majorie’s antiques on Sea Cloud Spirit . But what the boat lacks in wartime stories to tell, it makes up for in luxuriousness. It’s much larger than the original, with a shining mahogany body and whitewashed exterior, space for 136 guests and 90 crew, glorious double bedrooms with balconies, a large sun deck, indoor and outdoor dining spaces, and a spa with gym.

The cabins are surprisingly roomy and tastefully nautical.

I step on board and am shown to my room by friendly host José, who is possibly one of the smiliest people I’ve ever met, and all too willing to help with anything I need. The cabins are striking and surprisingly roomy with plush double beds, suitably nautical artwork, smart carpets and spacious balconies replete with loungers. I especially love the bathrooms, with their shiny taps and statement golden sinks, L’Occitane hair and body products ,and plenty of big fluffy towels.

I help myself to a glass of Champagne from the bottle on the coffee table and ready myself to set sail to distant lands (in this instance, Malaga to Cádiz, and then off to Lisbon ), before heading out to the Lido Deck bar. This is one of the best spots on the boat. Throughout the four days you get to know the staff, and bar manager Anton is one of the cheeriest. He’s an old hand, having worked for Sea Cloud for over a decade, greeting you by name every time and even querying where one of our party was when the seasickness proved too much one evening. Ask him about his Martini tastings—it’s a good way to spend an hour.

There’s plenty of seating on the Lido Deck and having an outside dining spot, something the original ship lacks, means mealtimes with a view and a breath of salty air. The buffet changes daily, with a wealth of salads, quiches, fish, chicken, steaks, and pastas prepared freshly in front of your eyes. It’s a treat watching the chefs work; a highlight was witnessing a giant tuna arrive whole on two men’s shoulders, an apple tucked inside its huge mouth, before sashimi and steaks were expertly whittled out one by one and served up with shavings of fresh wasabi. The inaugural gala dinner in the main dining room provides an opportunity to get dressed up; plates unveiled with a flourish from under a dome and a Champagne top-up never too far away.

The best things to do in Porto

There's no shortage of space to sunbathe on the top deck.

Casting off any comparisons with mega cruise ships, the entertainment on Sea Cloud Spirit all pays homage to a life at sea. On one particularly nice day, we all scrambled onto the lifeboat dinghies to circle the ship in her full glory. A few members of our party got to scale the ropes up to the masts—admittedly, I was jealous when I was not selected for this—and in the evening a handful of staff, including our lovely José, sang sea shanties on the deck.

But the most exciting event is the releasing of the sails. Every morning I headed up to the top deck, pushing open the doors to bobbing seas and blue skies, to watch the sailors work. In my mind, I imagined them billowing down within seconds, like something out of a Pirates of the Caribbean film, unfurling with a flourish before the ship steams off into the distance—but I was wrong.

It’s a long process, with over 10 people diligently winding and unwinding the ropes up in the sails and on the deck, working in tandem to release each individual part of the sail, until they are all finally free. Watching this, I felt like I’d learned something, and that went double after a tour of the engine room and ‘the bridge’, aka the ship’s control centre. Where possible, the boat utilizes wind power from the sails, but an average of 80 tonnes of fuel is used for every four-day trip.

There are multiple bookable excursions for days on land, including a variety of food and boozy tastings, and guided tours via foot, e-bike and tuk-tuk. We were shown around pretty Cádiz , culminating in a stop off at a local tapas restaurant for a taste of the local delicacies. This city is famous for its orange trees, which compete with the blossoms to fill the roadsides with brilliant flashes of color. It's from here that Chanel sources the fruit for its fragrances. “People in Cádiz say that when they’ve met the right romantic match, they’ve found the other half of their orange,” says our guide.

In Lisbon, we sidestepped the need to traverse the steep hillsides on foot by shuttling up to the best miradouros (viewpoints, to you and me) by tuk-tuk, then off to a Portuguese wine tasting at a very chic Art Deco museum-come-wine bar. Grazing on olives, cured hams and cheese while an expert talked us through various Portuguese wines was another highlight of the trip.

But as wonderful as days spent exploring can be, the real draw in this instance is the ship itself. Seeing the sun dip below the sea in the evenings while hanging over the railings, watching dolphins leap out of the water from the cabin balcony, the sound of the waves lulling me to sleep—these are my overriding memories from the trip. Even a brief bout of seasickness didn’t spoil the fun (although it certainly gave me some learnings for next time).

Usually the journeying part of traveling is tedious—even the chicest business class cabin feels oppressive after 14 hours—but the time on shore wasn’t half as exciting as that spent on board. I disembarked in Lisbon with a renewed appreciation for what it must have taken to set sail way back when; and a reminder that the journey itself is as important as the destination, in one of the loveliest ways possible.

The Morning

How biden changed his party.

We explore three ways the president has shaped the Democratic Party.

President Biden has never exactly been a liberal Democrat or a conservative Democrat. He has instead stayed in his party’s mainstream. When the party moved right in the 1990s, he moved with it. When it moved left in the 2010s, so did he.

But Biden has not simply gone with the Democratic flow. Over his more than 50 years in politics, he has periodically shown strong opinions about how his party should change — and helped it do so.

Last night in Chicago, Biden took a big step in his long political goodbye, delivering a 52-minute speech at the Democratic convention . In today’s newsletter, I’ll examine how Biden’s presidency shaped his party — and consider whether Kamala Harris is likely to continue these shifts. I think three points are key.

1. Biden’s neopopulism

Biden has always understood the class resentments that many Americans feel. (If you haven’t read Robert Draper’s profile of Biden for The Times Magazine, I recommend it , including the section in which Biden analyzes George W. Bush.)

Biden’s political career began in 1972, when he defeated an incumbent Republican senator in Delaware even as Richard Nixon won a landslide. Biden ran as a subtly different kind of Democrat, with a more working-class image than the party’s presidential nominee that year, George McGovern. Biden simultaneously distanced himself from the liberal fervor of the 1960s and portrayed himself as an economic populist. He criticized both draft dodgers and “millionaires who don’t pay any taxes at all.”

Five decades later, Biden became the most populist Democratic president in modern times. This positioning wasn’t just about his background, either. Populism has recently gained a new appeal, thanks to the failure of the market-based economic policies of the past half-century — which are often known as neoliberalism — to deliver broad-based prosperity.

Instead of focusing on trade deals, Biden tried to build up American manufacturing. He joined a picket line with autoworkers and appointed labor-friendly regulators. He gave Medicare the power to negotiate drug prices. He cracked down on “junk fees.” He tried to end decades of gentle antitrust regulation.

Biden devoted much of his speech last night to this agenda. He claimed to have rebuilt “the backbone of the middle class.” He said, “We finally beat big Pharma,” and “Wall Street didn’t build America, the middle class built America.” When the crowd chanted, “Union Joe,” he replied, “I agree. I’m proud.”

These economic policies are largely popular even though Biden is not. If the Democratic Party’s shift away from neoliberalism — toward what I’ve called neopopulism — continues, Biden’s presidency will be a major reason. And Harris’s initial economic proposals suggest that much of the shift will continue if she wins.

2. Bipartisanship lives

Biden loves to talk about how he has proved his doubters wrong, sometimes with a dash or two of hyperbole. Yet there is at least one aspect of his presidency for which he deserves to gloat: his surprising success at passing bipartisan legislation.

He has signed bipartisan bills on infrastructure, semiconductor chips, Ukraine aid and TikTok — as well as on anti-Asian hate crimes, the aviation system, the electoral process, gun violence, the Postal Service, same-sex marriage and veterans’ health. In a polarized Washington, Biden has demonstrated that bipartisanship remains possible.

“Remember, we were told we couldn’t get it done?” he asked in last night’s speech.

He drew on his long Senate career to help pass these bills. He refused to treat the Republican Party as the enemy and remained upbeat — and often in the background — even when negotiations stalled.

Would Harris show similar patience? And would congressional Republicans be willing to work with her? It’s hard to know.

3. A new cold war

Biden’s signature line about foreign policy is that the world is witnessing a struggle between democracy and autocracy . You can quibble with the details, but his basic point is correct.

U.S. allies are mostly democracies — including Western Europe, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, India, Australia, Mexico and Canada. The countries that treat the U.S. as an enemy are autocracies — China, Russia, Iran and North Korea. Increasingly, these autocracies are collaborating with one another.

Biden has defined the United States as the leading player in an alliance to combat autocracy. “Who can lead the world other than the United States of America?” he asked last night.

As president, he confronted China economically and promised to defend Taiwan. He rallied a pro-Ukraine coalition after Russia invaded. He withdrew from Afghanistan — chaotically — partly because of its limited strategic importance. He abandoned his initial reluctance to work with Saudi Arabia, an autocratic ally, and embraced it as a counterweight to Iran. He continued to embrace Israel for similar reasons, despite the death and destruction in Gaza.

Biden’s foreign policy is based on the idea that the world has entered a new cold war (even if he rejects the term). And Harris? Her campaign has said little about foreign policy or her worldview. Maybe that will start to change in Chicago this week.

“ America, I gave my best to you ,” Biden said in a speech that also criticized Donald Trump.

Biden called picking Harris as his running mate the best decision of his career. He joked that “like many of our best presidents, she was also vice president.”

Introduced by his daughter Ashley, Biden dabbed tears as convention delegates held signs reading “We ❤️ Joe.”

Speaking earlier, Hillary Clinton said, “On the other side of that glass ceiling is Kamala Harris raising her hand and taking the oath of office .”

Several speakers contrasted Harris’s background with Trump’s felony convictions. Clinton smiled and nodded as the audience chanted “lock him up.”

Shawn Fain of the United Auto Workers union wore a T-shirt that read “Trump is a scab.”

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the House progressive, praised Harris for supporting populist economic policies and seeking a cease-fire in Gaza .

Senate Democrats in tough races, including Jon Tester of Montana and Sherrod Brown of Ohio, are skipping the convention .

A pro-Palestinian protest outside the hall was smaller than organizers had expected . The police detained a few people who lobbed signs and cans.

Iran hacked Trump’s campaign and tried to hack Biden and Harris’s, U.S. intelligence agencies said .

On social media, Trump shared A.I.-generated images suggesting that Taylor Swift had endorsed him . She hasn’t.

Israel-hamas war.

American officials say Israel has accepted a U.S. intermediate proposal in cease-fire talks with Hamas, which is meant to help work through their remaining disagreements.

Hamas officials have not yet agreed to the deal, which they have called slanted toward Israel. Secretary of State Antony Blinken called the proposal “probably the best, maybe the last, opportunity” to secure a truce.

An Israeli airstrike demolished an apartment in central Gaza. Israel said it had targeted a member of the group Islamic Jihad. Locals said the strike killed a teacher and her six children.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad took responsibility for an explosion in Tel Aviv, which they said was a suicide bombing . There hasn’t been one in Israel since around 2016.

War in Ukraine

Women in Ukraine are stepping into male-dominated jobs as war depletes the work force.

Ukraine destroyed several bridges in the Kursk region, the part of Russia where it has made an incursion, cutting off Moscow’s routes for resupply or retreat.
