Mike Lynch’s co-defendant died from head injury after being hit by car days before yacht sinking

Mike Lynch ’s co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain died in hospital three days after being hit by a car on a country road, an inquest heard.

The 52-year-old, from Longstanton in south Cambridgeshire, was struck by a blue Vauxhall Corsa travelling between Stretham and Wicken on the A1123 at about 10.10am on 17 August.

Mr Chamberlain, a former vice president of finance at Mike Lynch’s software firm Autonomy, had been out running at the time, his lawyer Gary Lincenberg said.

Coroner Caroline Jones told the inquest in Alconbury that his medical cause of death was recorded as “traumatic head injury”.

She said: “A vehicle travelling between Stretham and Wicken on the A1123 crested a humpback bridge and was presented with a runner crossing the road from the nearside to the offside between two parts of a bridleway.”

She said the car struck Mr Chamberlain, causing him “significant injuries”.

Cambridgeshire Police said the collision happened on 17 August, and an activity uploaded to the fitness app Strava indicated that Mr Chamberlain was around six miles into his run having set out from the cathedral city of Ely earlier that morning.

Miss Jones said Mr Chamberlain was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge and his death was formally confirmed at 3.50am on 20 August.

Police said the driver of the car, a 49-year-old woman from Haddenham, remained at the scene by the Great River Ouse and was assisting with police enquiries.

Miss Jones added: “Police investigations remain ongoing, therefore, no further date has been fixed for these proceedings to resume.

“I adjourn today’s hearing to a date to be fixed at the end of police investigations and any possible prosecutions. I extend my condolences to the family of Stephen Chamberlain.”

Mr Chamberlain had been cleared of the same charges of fraud and conspiracy as his former boss Mr Lynch, after they were accused of scheming to inflate the company’s value before it was sold to Hewlett-Packard for $11bn (£8.6bn).

Just 43 hours after the road crash, Mr Lynch’s boat the Bayesian sank within minutes in a violent storm off the coast of Sicily, which killed seven people including his teenage daughter Hannah .

Mr Chamberlain’s inquest was opened on Thursday by coroner Caroline Jones at New Shire Hall, Alconbury, but was adjourned to a date not yet fixed.

Mr Chamberlain’s family issued an emotional tribute following his death, saying : “Steve was a much-loved husband, father, son, brother and friend.

“He was an amazing individual whose only goal in life was to help others in any way possible. He made a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”

Paying tribute, his lawyer Mr Lincenberg said: “He was a courageous man with unparalleled integrity. We deeply miss him.

“Steve fought successfully to clear his good name at trial earlier this year, and his good name now lives on through his wonderful family.”

Sushovan Hussain, a former chief financial officer of Autonomy, said: “Steve was by my side for many years, and I had the honour of calling him, Jonathan, Judy and Chris my good friends.

“It is truly impossible to fathom how they can all be gone over such a short period. It is tragic beyond words.”

Poppy Gustafsson, the chief executive of cybersecurity company Darktrace, added: “At a time when both Mike and Steve were so recently acquitted, it feels too cruel.

“But also, such a relief to know that they died with the world knowing their innocence.”

The inquest comes as it was reported four of the victims of the Bayesian yacht disaster died after oxygen ran out in an air bubble on the sunken boat.

Autopsies over the past few days on four of those who died have revealed an absence of water in their lungs, suggesting they suffocated as the air became saturated with carbon dioxide, Italian publication La Repubblica said.

The outlet reported post-mortems showed four people died from “atypical drowning”, with “no water in their lungs, trachea and stomach”. There were no signs of external injuries.

Designed around a semi-displacement GRP hull and superstructure she features a 7.2m beam and a 1.82m draft. The yacht is built over 2 decks with an internal volume of 207 GT (Gross Tonnes).

Launched in September 2020 this yacht undertook sea trials over the following months. She was delivered to her owners in November 2020.

Accommodation

Miss Anna offers accommodation for up to 8 guests in 4 suites comprising an owners cabin, 1 VIP cabin, 1 double cabin and 1 twin cabin. She is also capable of carrying up to 4 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.

Performance & Capabilities

Powered by twin diesel MTU (12V 2000 M86) 2,185hp engines, motor yacht Miss Anna is capable of reaching a top speed of 25 knots, and comfortably cruises at 22 knots. With her 20,819 litre fuel tanks she has a maximum range of 2,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. Her semi-displacement hull design means she offers a great balance of space and speed.

Underwater lights will turn plenty of heads when the sun goes down.

A General Description of Motor Yacht MARTHA ANN

This motor yacht MARTHA ANN is a 70 metre 230 (foot) prominent steel vessel which was produced by Lurssen Yachts and devised by Lurssen and Espen Oeino. Sleeping 12 guests and 17 qualified crew, motor yacht MARTHA ANN used to be called (Project Shark) as her project name or actual name. Launched in 2007 her reasonably recent interior design and decor showcases the perspicacious talents from Zuretti Interior Design and their approach to interior yacht design.

MARTHA ANN is one of a series of three sisterships, all designed by Espen Øino for the same American owner. He sold the first two Apoise (2006) and St. Nicolas (2007) before completion and kept MARTHA ANN for himself. Superacht MARTHA ANN boasts six decks, a glass elevator in the lobby, a huge sports bar and gym, a large Spa Pool a 1,400 square foot master suite and numerous guest rooms to name a few of her impressive features.

The Building & Yacht Design for Luxury Yacht MARTHA ANN

Lurssen was the naval architect firm involved in the technical superyacht composition for MARTHA ANN. Her interior design was completed by Zuretti Interior Design. Lurssen and Espen Oeino is also associated with the yacht wider design collaboration for this boat. Germany is the country that Lurssen Yachts constructed their new build motor yacht in. After formal launch in 2007 in Rendsburg the boat was delivered on to the happy owner after sea trials. A sizeable feeling is brought about with a maximum beam (width) of 12.8 metres or 41.1 ft. With a 3.5m (11.48ft) draught (maximum depth) she is deep. The material steel was used in the building of the hull of the motor yacht. Her superstructure above deck is built from aluminium.

Fitted with two CATERPILLAR diesel engines, MARTHA ANN will attain a maximum speed of 15.5 knots. Her propulsion units are twin screw propellers. She also has an efficient range of 4000 miles when motoring at her cruising speed of 14 knots. Her total HP is 3000 HP and her total Kilowatts are 2238. With respect to the ship’s stabalisers she utilises At Anchor Systems.

An unusual bond formed between Miss Conduct and Bingham Day Services (special needs care centre for people with learning difficulties). They regularly take their clients for a little walk along the harbourside and they wave at the owners and crew as they walk by. They recently sent us a charming thank you letter and drew some colourful pictures of the yacht and helicopter. This of course gave excuse for a special trip out to post them into the yacht's quayside letterbox. In return and to their surprise we arranged a special tour onboard culminating in some tea and cake. Care user Matt made a special bond with our Marta (Yacht's Steward). Likewise, Jess the rather apparent "life and soul" of the group, seemed delighted when the owners presented her with a flowery Captains hat and also took a particular shining to the actual Captain himself. It was obvious that the Bingham carers work very hard and are always looking for new experiences and stimulus for their users so it was lovely to see a smile on their faces too. We are organising another visit with more of their residents and care users in March and hope to slot this in as a regular event as everyone got something out of it.

During April a close friend from Bristol volunteered to go to Ukraine to help in the evacuation of Refugees.She was let down by the organisation that got here there and so she remained and self funded her missionto rescue, shelter and feed many refudees by going into Ukraine with a mini bus and taking them to a safe haven in Poland. Miss conduct donated £2000 towards her courageous mission.

Fraser Yachts lists motor yacht Ana Marta U for sale

Harry Peralta at Fraser Yachts sends news that he's signed the 31.1m motor yacht Ana Marta U for sale.

Built by Maiora in 2002, she accommodates eight guests in a master suite, VIP stateroom and two twin cabins with Pullman berths. Twin 2,000hp MTU engines with only 950 hours on them give her a cruising speed of 22 knots and a top speed of 28 knots. Ana Marta U has a large flybridge with a helm station, wet bar, solarium and Bimini top while notable features include hot and cold showers on the swimming platform and flybridge plus a Bose sound system throughout.

Lying in Barcelona, Spain, Ana Marta U is asking €2.8 million.
