Benetti provides a first look inside Zlatan Ibrahimović's 34m yacht

Benetti provides a first look inside Zlatan Ibrahimović's 34m yacht

The design team focused on creating open floor plans on three decks.

Based in Italy, the Benetti shipyard showed for the first time what the 34-meter Oasis 34M series yacht, owned by footballer Zlatan Ibrahimovic, looks like from the inside.

The vessel was first presented at the Cannes Yachting Festival in 2022. The second hull of the popular series was named Unknown. Since then the yard has received orders for thirty-four Oasis 34Ms, four of which will be delivered this year.

The vessel's exterior design, which continues the Oasis 40M line, was developed by the British studio RWD. The yacht features a vertical bow and Benetti's signature Oasis Deck with a multi-level space instead of the traditional beach club. The boat's main and upper decks are adorned with sporty silver trim as a reference to the world of automobiles.

Ivory and bleached walnut are used in the interior. New York-based studio Bonetti/Kozerski worked on it. The same type of teak was used on the main and upper decks of the yacht to create a unified style. In addition, leather details in the color of porcelain combined with the warm tones of the ribbed walnut wall panels.

The design team focused on creating open floor plans on the three decks to maximize the sense of connection to the sea. The curved lines in the interior and exterior of the yacht mimic the ocean waves, and the use of Canaletto bleached wood specially designed for a non-distracting environment adds to the naturalness and harmony of the design.

Five cabins accommodate ten guests, four cabins accommodate seven crew members. The owner's cabin is located on the main deck forward, and two double and two twin cabins are located on the lower deck.

The maximum speed of the yacht is 16 knots, and the average cruising speed is 10 knots with a cruising range of 2.7 thousand nautical miles. Benetti emphasized that the yacht is a “highly reliable product” that maintains its beauty over time.

Zlatan Ibrahimović’s Dreamy New Yacht is an Intimate Oasis

Even bigger than its predecessor, the Swedish footballer’s newest yacht favors life in close contact with the water

benetti oasis34m

Zlatan Ibrahimović shows us the stunning panoramas from his latest luxury yacht , sitting comfortably next to the aft pool while filming the boat with a drone. The video, posted on his official Instagram profile, leaves no room for doubt: the Swedish footballer has a fabulous new yacht . After his 100’ Riva Corsaro, Ibrahimović, has decided to purchase an even bigger boat: the Benetti Oasis 34M . But what do both vessels have in common? A name: “Unknown”.

benetti oasis34m

Interiors and exteriors are extremely connected. Much like its big sister, the Benetti Oasis 40M’s external design was signed off by British firm RWD , while interiors are by New York’s Bonetti/Kozerski .

benetti oasis34m

The Oasis 34M yacht chosen by Zlatan Ibrahimović features three bridges, many open areas and stretches 34.36 meters, reaching a maximum velocity of 16 knots and hosting up to 10 people in 5 cabins.

The interiors of the luxury yacht are completely connected with the aft terraces via two curved sliding doors that open onto the living area of the main bridge, creating a single open space with exteriors.

Studio Bonetti/Kozerski designed environments with a more casual atmosphere than traditional yachts; the theme of fluid spaces is made clear everywhere: in furnishings, the shape of elements, in details, where a circular pattern recalls the waves of the sea.

benetti oasis34m

In the version proposed by the shipyard, interiors are played up by few but fine materials and by the choice of a palette limited to just a few shades, so as to not create an environment where solids overpower voids. The owner’s suite, with floor-to-ceiling windows in an essential yet refined style, occupies the bow section of the main deck and can be configured with a pull-down terrace on the starboard side. The bed seems to fluctuate in the space and finds anchorage on the aft wall that serves as a headboard and partition with the full-beam bathroom, preceded by a dressing area on either side. Like every Benetti yacht, spaces can be articulated according to the wishes of the owners, which means Ibrahimović likely chose custom interiors. In any case, the Oasis 34M yacht is sure to leave its mark, just like Ibra.

Who Was on the Sunken Yacht? Tech Mogul Mike Lynch, His Family and Friends.

Mr. Lynch, the former chief executive of the software firm Autonomy, who was acquitted on fraud charges in June, was with friends and family when the yacht went down in a severe storm.

Mike Lynch, in a suit and carrying a leather briefcase, is walking toward a building.

By Michael J. de la Merced

Michael de la Merced reported on Mike Lynch’s career and legal battles over the course of 13 years across two continents.

A cruise on the Mediterranean Sea aboard a superyacht was supposed to be a celebratory event for the British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch , who was acquitted in June of fraud charges tied to the sale of his company, Autonomy, to the tech giant Hewlett-Packard.

Instead, it turned into a disaster after the yacht, a 180-foot boat called the Bayesian, sank off the coast of Sicily in a violent storm. Of the 22 people aboard, 15 were rescued and seven others died . Search operations ended on Friday after the final body was recovered from the site of the sunken yacht .

Here’s what we know about the passengers.

Mike Lynch and his family

Mr. Lynch, 59, is a British software entrepreneur who had once been described as his country’s Bill Gates. He founded the software firm Autonomy, which analyzed clients’ unorganized data, and turned it into one of the most prominent British technology companies of its time. He became a widely known corporate leader, who advised David Cameron, the British prime minister at the time, and joined the board of the BBC.

In 2011, Mr. Lynch sold Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion, which was far above its market value, earning him hundreds of millions. But HP investors almost immediately soured on the transaction, and the American tech giant quickly fired its chief executive — and then Mr. Lynch.

HP later accused Mr. Lynch of misleading it about the state of Autonomy’s business, setting off a decade-long legal ordeal for the British executive, who denied the accusations. U.S. prosecutors charged him and other executives with fraud, and Autonomy’s chief financial officer was convicted in 2018.

Despite appeals to the British government, Mr. Lynch was extradited to the United States last year and was confined to a townhouse in San Francisco ahead of his criminal trial, which began in March. Facing the possibility of decades in prison if convicted, Mr. Lynch and another colleague were instead acquitted of all charges.

An official in Palermo, Sicily’s capital, said on Thursday that Mr. Lynch’s body had been recovered. His wife, Angela Bacares, 57, accompanied him on the yacht, and she was rescued on Monday when it sank. She was a consistent presence at his trial in the United States. Records show that she controlled Revtom, the company listed as the owner of the Bayesian.

The body of Hannah Lynch , Mr. Lynch and Ms. Bacares’s 18-year-old daughter, was thought to be recovered on Friday.

The other guests

Jonathan Bloomer, 70, chair of Morgan Stanley’s international arm and the chairman of Hiscox, an insurance provider that trades on the London Stock Exchange, was on the yacht when it sank, along with his wife, Judy Bloomer, 71. Their bodies are thought to be among those recovered, but Italian authorities have not identified them.

Christopher J. Morvillo, 59, a New York-based partner at the international law firm Clifford Chance, was also on the yacht. A former federal prosecutor who comes from a family of prominent lawyers, Mr. Morvillo represented Mr. Lynch during his criminal trial in San Francisco. His wife, Neda, 57, was with him on the yacht. Their bodies are also assumed to be among those recovered.

“We are in shock and deeply saddened by this tragic incident,” a representative of Clifford Chance said in a statement.

Surviving passengers rescued from the yacht include Charlotte Golunski, a partner at Mr. Lynch’s venture firm, Invoke Capital; Ms. Golunski’s husband, James Emslie; and their one-year-old daughter Sophie. Also rescued were Ayla Ronald, a lawyer at Clifford Chance, and her partner, Matthew Fletcher.

The yacht had a crew of 10, and nine were rescued. The body of the chef, Recaldo Thomas, was recovered from the water, the Sicilian Civil Protection Department said.

Inside the luxury Bayesian superyacht as Brits missing from boat sunk after tornado

The Bayesian was known for its single 75-meter (246-feet) mast, one of the world’s tallest made of aluminum and which was lit up at night, just hours before it sank

The £30million luxury Bayesian superyacht that sank off Sicily leaving one person dead and six others missing was just around 700 metres from the harbour before tragedy struck.

British tech magnate Mike Lynch and several other people were among those missing after their luxury superyacht sank during a freak storm off Sicily early Monday, Italy’s civil protection and authorities said. Lynch’s wife and 14 other people survived.

Mr Lynch , who was acquitted in June in a huge US fraud trial, was among the six people who remain unaccounted for after their sailboat sank off Porticello, when a tornado over the water known as a waterspout struck the area overnight, said Salvo Cocina of Sicily’s civil protection agency. One body has been recovered, and police divers were trying to reach the hull of the ship, which was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) off Porticello, near Palermo, where it had been anchored.

It had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers, the Italian coast guard said. A sudden fierce storm had battered the area overnight, and struck the place precisely where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian had been moored. The luxury superyacht is said to have a 75m (246ft) long mast.

“They were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Cocina, noting that another superyacht nearby wasn’t as badly damaged and was able to rescue some of the 15 survivors, including Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares. The crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries: In addition to Britain, passengers and crew were from Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar , the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate 12 passengers in four double cabins, a triple and the master suite, plus crew accommodations, according to Charter World and Yacht Charters. It had an initial asking price of £30million.

The vessel, which previously was named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag, featured a sleek, minimalist interior of light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions and photos on the charter sites.

The Bayesian was known for its single 75-meter (246-feet) mast, one of the world ’s tallest made of aluminium and which was lit up at night, just hours before it sank. Online charter sites list it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week. The Bayesian was awarded the best exterior styling at the 2009 World Superyacht Awards.

Witnesses have said the vessel was still at anchor in front of the port of Porticello when the tornado struck and the storm broke the large sail mast which is believed to have led the boat to capsize. The 15 people were saved by the ship Sir Robert Baden Powell, which was anchored by the stricken vessel. Captain Karsten Borner of the Dutch ship said that it was able to hold its position in the sea using engines during the storm but then the saw the Bayesan had disappeared.

“We realized that the boat next to ours was no longer there. We saw a red signal flare coming from the area of the boat, so my first officer and I climbed into the tender and went to provide assistance: we recovered 15 survivors, including a little girl. After raising the alarm, the coast guard units also arrived. We heard screams, we continued to search the area but we did not find anyone other than the 15 survivors who had already been rescued."

4 bodies found inside the Bayesian, Mike Lynch family yacht, amid search

Four bodies were recovered inside the Bayesian superyacht on Wednesday, more than two days after it sank off the coast of Italy , setting off an exhaustive search for six missing people, including British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch .

Two of the bodies discovered earlier on Wednesday were brought to shore. One body recovered was a heavily built man, Reuters reported.

Six of the ship's 22 passengers, including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, went missing after the yacht plunged under the water just before 5 a.m. on Monday as a storm swept across the area. Americans are among the missing, officials have said.

The U.K.-registered yacht belonged to Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, who was also on board and was rescued. The tech tycoon was recently acquitted on fraud charges after a year under house arrest.

Ricardo Thomas, the ship's cook, was found dead on Monday, according to the coast guard.

The rescue mission saw a diving team, helicopters and multiple coast guard ships deployed to search the water. Fifteen people were pulled from the water on Monday, and eight were hospitalized in stable condition.

A 'black swan event'? Experts puzzle over why Bayesian yacht sank

An investigation opened by local prosecutors into the cause of the disaster is ongoing. Experts have pointed to a water spout, a tornado over the water that can travel up to 120 mph, that formed during the storm, as well as the heavy weight of ship's mast, one of the largest in the world.

The 184-feet-long ship was made by Italian ship manufacturer Perini in 2008.

Lynch set off on the cruise late last month to celebrate his acquittal on fraud charges in the U.S. that marked a decade of legal challenges, the Associated Press reported .

One of his lawyers and a character witness for Lynch during the trial were also on board and vanished when the boat went down. Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of the four people found.

Here are the passengers who were declared missing.

Mike Lynch and Hannah Lynch

Mike Lynch, 59, is co-founder of Britain’s largest enterprise software, Autonomy, which was sold to Hewlett-Packard in 2011, and founder of venture capital fund Invoke Capital.

Sometimes known as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” Lynch was slapped with charges after HP said it had uncovered deceit and a major accounting scandal within the firm. He spent a year on house arrest after being extradited from the UK.

In early June, at the end of a 12-week trial, a San Francisco jury acquitted Lynch of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. He was also cleared on a charge of securities fraud later that month.

Lynch and Bacares have two daughters and six dogs, all named after engineering parts, according to the U.K.’s Sunday Times in a profile of Lynch from last month.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, was also among the missing. She was preparing to study English literature at Oxford University, according to the Sunday Times.

Hannah is the younger of Mike Lynch’s two daughters, the Times reported . Mike Lynch told the outlet that his daughters had grown up with their father being publicly accused of fraud.

Jonathan Bloomer and Judy Bloomer

Jonathan Bloomer is the non-executive chairman of both Morgan Stanley International and the insurer Hiscox, among other companies. Bloomer acted as a character witness on Lynch’s behalf during his fraud trial.

Hiscox Chief Executive Aki Hussain told Reuters in a statement that the firm was deeply shocked and saddened and their thoughts were with all those affected.

Bloomer’s twin brother, Jeremy, told BBC that he is processing the news and the family is waiting to hear updates.

“He was my elder by half an hour, so, it means a lot when you lose a twin brother,” Jeremy Bloomer told BBC. “We’ll still wait and see, so it’s fingers crossed.”

Jonathan Bloomer’s wife, Judy, is a psychotherapist of nearly three decades and former teacher. She specializes in anxiety and stress. She studied English language and literature at Homerton College in Cambridge.

Christopher Morvillo and Neda Morvillo

A lawyer with Clifford Chance, Chris Morvillo was among the team that represented Mike Lynch during his trial. Morvillo is an American citizen.

He was an assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1999 to 2005, and he worked on the criminal investigation stemming from the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Morvillo was a graduate of Fordham University School of Law and Villanova University.

Neda Morvillo, his wife, owns a hand-crafted jewelry company under her maiden name, Neda Nassiri. The company’s website said she has been designing and making jewelry for over 20 years.

In a post on LinkedIn after the conclusion of Lynch’s trial, Chris Morvillo acknowledged his family for their support during the case.

“And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo.  None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home.

And they all lived happily ever after…."

Body of British Tech Entrepreneur Lynch Retrieved From Yacht, Daughter Missing

PORTICELLO, Italy (Reuters) -The body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch was retrieved on Thursday from the wreck of his family yacht that sank this week off the coast of Sicily during a violent storm, a senior Italian official said.

Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah is still unaccounted for, interior ministry official Massimo Mariani told Reuters after being briefed by the emergency services.

The British-flagged Bayesian, a 56-metre-long (184-foot) superyacht carrying 22 passengers and crew, was anchored off the port of Porticello, near Palermo, when it disappeared beneath the waves in minutes after bad weather struck early Monday.

Lynch, 59, was one of the UK's best-known tech entrepreneurs and had invited friends to join him on the yacht to celebrate his acquittal in June in a U.S. fraud trial.

Seven people are believed to have died in the disaster while 15 survived, including Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, who is the owner of the Bayesian.

Italian officials confirmed they had retrieved on Wednesday the bodies of Jonathan Bloomer, a non-executive chair of Morgan Stanley International, and Christopher Morvillo of the law firm Clifford Chance, alongside their wives, Judy Bloomer and Neda Morvillo.

The body of the onboard chef, Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas, was recovered near the wreck on Monday.

Mariani said it was possible that Hannah Lynch's body was not in the boat, but might have been swept out to sea.

Fire brigade spokesperson Luca Cari said if her body was still in the yacht it could take time to find, given the difficulty divers were having in accessing all areas of the boat, which is lying on its side at a depth of 50 metres (165 feet).

A judicial investigation has been opened into the disaster, which has baffled naval marine experts, who say a boat like the Bayesian, built by Italian high-end yacht manufacturer Perini, should have withstood the storm.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of the Italian Sea Group, which owns Perini, told Italian media the Bayesian was "one of the safest boats in the world" and blamed the crew for failing to follow correct safety procedures.

The captain, James Cutfield, and his eight surviving crew members, have made no public comment on the disaster. The prosecutor leading the investigation, Ambrogio Cartosio, has scheduled a press conference for Saturday.

CHALLENGING CONDITIONS

Specialist rescuers have been searching inside the hull of the sunken yacht for the past three days in what they said were extremely challenging conditions due to the depth and the narrowness of the places that the divers are scouring.

The fire brigade compared the efforts to those that were carried out, on a larger scale, for the Costa Concordia, a luxury cruise liner that capsized off the Italian island of Giglio in January 2012, killing 32 people.

Once the final body is recovered, experts will have to decide whether, or how, to salvage the vessel.

The CEO of Italian Sea Group said the yacht's automatic tracking system suggested that it took 16 minutes from the moment the storm first hit to the sinking.

He said it was clear the ship took in large amounts of water, adding that investigators would need to see what doorways or hatches might have been left open, focusing notably on a main door located on the left side of the yacht.

"A Perini boat survived the Category 5 Katrina hurricane. Do you think one couldn't survive a waterspout here," he told Corriere della Sera newspaper, referring to a type of tornado which is believed to have hit the Bayesian.

Under maritime law, a captain has full responsibility for the ship and the crew, as well as the safety of all those aboard.

The captain of the Costa Concordia, Francesco Schettino, is serving a 16-year prison term for his role in the 2012 disaster after he admitted to sailing too close to underwater rocks.

Tributes paid to Mike Lynch and daughter Hannah after bodies found

foto yacht ibrahimovic

Tributes have been paid to 18-year-old Hannah Lynch, after divers recovered what is believed to be her body in the wreckage of a luxury yacht which sank off Sicily.

Hannah was the last person unaccounted for after the luxury yacht Bayesian sank during a freak storm off the Italian fishing village of Porticello, east of Palermo, claiming seven lives in total.

Friends have described her as a "warm and beautiful soul", while teachers praised her "sky-high intellectual ability".

The body of her father, tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, was recovered from the shipwreck earlier this week.

The family released a picture of the two on Friday.

In a statement a spokesperson said: "The Lynch family is devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends."

"Their thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy. They would like to sincerely thank the Italian coastguard, emergency services and all those who helped in the rescue."

"Their one request now is that their privacy be respected at this time of unspeakable grief.”

"Mike was the most brilliant mind and caring person I have ever known," a close friend, Andrew Kanter, said. "His passion for life, knowledge and all those around him was instantly inspiring to everyone he met, and he will be sorely missed."

The Italian Coast Guard released a statement saying the rescue operations have come to an end with the recovery of Hannah Lynch, adding that a total of seven people were confirmed dead.

The survivors include a one-year-old child and Hannah’s mother, Angela Bacares.

Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy Bloomer, a charity trustee, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo, his wife Neda Morvillo and the boat's chef Recaldo Thomas all died in the disaster.

Italian authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances around Monday's incident.

In cases like this one, it is common for officials to embark on a broad investigation - known as a 'crime hypothesis' - that considers a series of possible criminal charges.

Approached by BBC News, the Italian police confirmed an investigation was ongoing but no charges have yet been brought.

A large coastguard vessel docked at port

Rescuers described the search operation, which started on Monday, as "complex", with divers limited to 12-minute underwater shifts .

After reports emerged that the final body had been found, a coastguard vessel which had been at the site of the shipwreck for hours could be seen back in the port.

Meanwhile, a helicopter landed nearby as divers took off their orange suits on the quayside.

A decision on whether to raise the sunken yacht from the seabed is "not on the agenda" but will be in the future, a spokesperson from the Italian Coastguard has said.

The ship was "practically intact" on the seabed, according to divers on the search and rescue team.

PA Media An Italian fire service dive team return to port on the fifth day of the search and recovery operation

On Friday morning a flag outside Hannah Lynch's school in Hammersmith in west London was being flown at half mast to mark her death.

She had recently finished her A-levels and had been offered a place to study English at the University of Oxford, according to the Times.

"We are all incredibly shocked by the news," a spokesperson for Latymer Upper School said.

"Our thoughts are with their family and everyone involved," they added.

Gracie Lea, a classmate of Hannah, described her as "easy to love: sincere, dedicated, fiercely intelligent and genuinely kind. I’ll always remember her smiling".

How many children do Mike Lynch and Angela Bacares share?

Mike and Angela have two children together.

Their 18-year-old daughter Hannah was on board the superyacht when it was battered by heavy rain and winds, causing it to sink.

The couple have another daughter together, although less is known about her and it’s not believed she was on the vessel.

What happened to Angela Bacares on the Bayesian superyacht in Sicily?

Angela was on board the Bayesian superyacht as it sank off the coast of Sicily on August 19, 2024, and suffered horrific injuries as she made her escape.

She was with her husband Mike and their daughter Hannah , and described how she was woken by the vessel tilting to one side.

Angela explained that she and her husband weren't concerned at first but upon further investigation, the sound of shattering glass sparked panic.

She had to painstakingly climb over broken shards to get out of the yacht as it went down.

Severe cuts to her feet meant she had to use a wheelchair after she was rescued.

Torrential rain and wind battered much of the Porticello port in Palermo - striking the 183ft superyacht with swirling columns of air that formed waterspouts.

At 246ft tall, the mast of the boat is the world’s second highest.

Witnesses said the twister snapped it clean in half.

Others told Italian outlet Ansa that the anchor was down when the storm hit on Monday morning, causing the ship to lose its balance.

It’s since emerged that Angela is the registered owner of the vessel.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich - hit with sanctions by the UK government over his alleged links to Russian President Vladimir Putin - is thought to have landed in Moscow after apparently being seen at an airport in Israel.

A jet linked to the Russian-Israeli billionaire landed in the Russian capital on Tuesday morning following a brief stop in Istanbul, en route from Tel Aviv, according to Flightradar24.

He is believed to have been spotted in a VIP lounge at Ben Gurion airport on Monday shortly before a jet linked to him took off for Istanbul and later landed in the Turkish city.

Reuters said it had obtained a photo showing him in the lounge and wearing a mask under his chin. A video also appears to show him at the airport, removing his jacket. But the news agency could not confirm if the oligarch boarded the flight.

Mr Abramovich's yacht £460 million yacht Solaris was moving off the coast of Albania on Tuesday morning with the status "awaiting orders", according to Refinitiv ship tracking data.

Until Monday night, its destination was shown as Turkey after leaving Montenegro but that was removed late yesterday.

European Union diplomats have agreed to add him to the EU's list of Russian billionaires sanctioned following Moscow's military offensive, according to two sources.

Roman Abramovich's yacht Solaris was seen in the waters of Porto Montenegro in Tivat, Montenegro, on Saturday

The Chelsea owner was sanctioned in the UK last week with the British government saying the move was due to Mr Abramovich having a "close relationship for decades" with Mr Putin.

Mr Abramovich will have his assets frozen, will also face a prohibition on transactions with UK individuals and businesses and will have a travel ban forbidding him to enter the UK.

He denies having close ties to the Russian president.

Britain has so far sanctioned about 20 oligarchs, including Mr Abramovich and Alisher Usmanov, freezing their properties across London and banning them from coming to Britain.

One EU diplomat told Reuters no concerns were raised about the new sanctions, suggesting Mr Abramovich's listing "will go through" and his assets will be frozen.

But, as the billionaire also holds a Portuguese passport, it means that Portugal could refrain from imposing on him the asset freeze and travel ban decided at EU level, a second EU official said.

Victoria Nuland, the US under secretary of state for political affairs, said recently that Washington was asking Israel to join in financial and export sanctions against Russia.

Mr Abramovich initially proposed to place the club in the care of its foundation and then put it up for sale for £3bn, with several billionaires including property developer Nick Candy linked with the takeover.

However, the sanctions imposed on him in the UK means his sale of the club may not be possible.

The Stamford Bridge club will be given a special licence to continue operating, under limited terms and will be unable to sell new tickets, sign players or extend contracts and open retail outfits.

The sale of the club could still go ahead if the government issues another licence.

Roman Abramovich was once the richest known man in Russia. Bloomberg pegs his net worth at $13.5 billion, a $4.1 billion slump since the beginning of the year.

foto yacht ibrahimovic

His net worth peaked in 2008 at $23.5 billion.

Ambramovich, 55, is known for his collection of superyachts, luxury cars, private planes, and homes around the world. The Wall Street Journal once nicknamed his global collection of extravagant possessions " The Roman Empire. "

The billionaire is the  largest shareholder of Evraz , one of the world's top producers of steel . He also owns stakes in the world's largest producer of refined nickel, according to Bloomberg.

Most of Abramovich's vast fortune comes from proceeds from selling Russian state-owned assets after the fall of the Soviet Union. He owned stakes in industries like airlines, oil, and aluminum .

In 2003, he sold a 26% stake of Russian airline company Aeroflot to the National Reserve Bank. In 2005, he sold his 70% stake in Russian oil company Sibneft for almost $10 billion. He also offloaded his aluminum assets for more than $2 billion.

Abramovich did not respond to Insider's request for comment for this story.

Katie Warren contributed to an earlier version of this article.

From 2003 to 2008, Abramovich was the governor of Chukotka, a remote Arctic province.

foto yacht ibrahimovic

During his tenure, he spent $1.3 billion of his own money on the region.

Sibneft, the oil company of which he owned nearly 70%, was registered in the region until Abramovich sold his shares to the state-run energy company in 2015.

Abramovich has been married three times and has seven children.

foto yacht ibrahimovic

His most recent marriage was to Dasha Zhukova, with whom he has two children . The couple cofounded the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow and the New Holland Island cultural center in Saint Petersburg. In 2017, the couple announced they would be separating after 10 years together.

Abramovich was previously married to Irina Malandina for 16 years. They have four daughters and one son. At the time of their 2007 split, he was worth $18.7 billion. Although Russian courts usually award a wife half of the wealth built up during a marriage, Malandina settled for $300 million  — 1.6% of Abramovich's fortune.

Little is known about Abramovich's first marriage to Olga Yurevna Lysova, except that it lasted for three years, from 1987 to 1990.

Now, with the West's sanctions on Russia's oligarchs, Abramovich has reportedly been scrambling to sell his assets.

foto yacht ibrahimovic

In the aftermath of Russia's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny's organization named Abramovich one of 35 Russian individuals who should be considered for sanctions, The Guardian reported.

Abramovich bought London-based Chelsea FC in 2003 from long-time chairman Ken Bates for $233 million. Abramovich is "a keen follower of sport and international football," a statement said at the time.

In a statement in March, Abramovich announced that he would be selling the club. "This has never been about business nor money for me, but pure passion for the game and Club," Abramovich said.

He also said all the net proceeds from the sale would go to those affected by the war in Ukraine. Bloomberg reported that he is seeking a bid of 3 billion pounds ($4 billion).

Abramovich is understood to have turned down a £2.5 billion ($3.3 billion) offer in late February or early March, per SkyNews.

Abramovich was among seven Russian oligarchs who were sanctioned by the UK on March 10.

Despite the billionaire rushing to offload some of his assets — including Chelsea Football Club — the sanctions now bar him from making deals to sell the club, banning all transactions between Abramovich and UK citizens and businesses .

Chelsea FC is the seventh-most valuable soccer club in the world, per Forbes.

foto yacht ibrahimovic

It was worth about $3.2 billion in 2021, per Forbes . While the club has amassed millions of fans around the world, not all are happy with its stance on Ukraine.

Chelsea FC posted a controversial statement in February, where it failed to mention Russia or Abramovich's ownership.

"The situation in Ukraine is horrific and devastating. Chelsea FC's thoughts are with everyone in Ukraine. Everyone at the club is praying for peace," the club said in a statement on its website at the time.

However, Chelsea's financial future is now in doubt because of sanctions against Abramovich. Sanctions on him mean that the club's finances are frozen , and that Chelsea can now only spend around $26,000 per game on travel.

In 2018, Abramovich was granted Israeli citizenship and flew to Tel Aviv after facing delays in renewing his UK visa.

foto yacht ibrahimovic

Upon moving to Tel Aviv, Abramovich became the richest man living in Israel. In 2020, local media reported that the billionaire had dropped $57 million on a seafront hotel in Tel Aviv.

In the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, several high-profile Israelis — including the chairman of the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Museum and a chief rabbi — urged the US not to impose sanctions on Abramovich, according to The Times of Israel.

The representatives wrote a letter to the US ambassador in February commending Abramovich's investments, philanthropy, and contributions to Israel, the outlet reported.

The museum's chairman told the Washington Post that Abramovich was the museum's second-largest private donor.

Reports indicate Abramovich is also rushing to offload his London real estate holdings.

foto yacht ibrahimovic

The billionaire has homes all over the world, including a $118.4 million home in Kensington Palace Gardens in London, an area nicknamed "Billionaires' Row," according to The Guardian .

"He's terrified of being sanctioned, which is why he's already going to sell his home tomorrow and sell another flat as well," Labour MP Chris Bryant told the UK Parliament in March, per Bloomberg .

Abramovich is also among the billionaires who own homes at Eaton Square — an exclusive garden estate in London that is nicknamed "Red Square" because of the number of Russian billionaires who own properties there.

Abramovich has spent tens of millions of dollars on prime New York City real estate.

foto yacht ibrahimovic

Abramovich paid $96 million for four townhouses on New York City's Upper East Side with plans to turn them into one megamansion. He also bought another property two blocks away.

In September 2018, Abramovich transferred four of the five properties, all in a row on East 75th Street, to his third ex-wife, Zhukova, for about $92 million as part of their divorce proceedings, the New York Post reported, citing city property records.

Abramovich reportedly owns a home in Antibes on the French Riviera.

foto yacht ibrahimovic

Abramovich bought the Chateau de la Croe , a mansion that overlooks the Mediterranean Sea, in 2001, per Bloomberg.

In 2018, A French court found that Abramovich had undervalued the holiday home and had not paid enough wealth tax in 2006 and 2007.

In 2009, Abramovich dropped $90 million on an estate on the Caribbean island of St. Bart's, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing a person close to the deal.

foto yacht ibrahimovic

The 70-acre estate is replete with Balinese bungalows with ocean views, tennis courts, swimming pools, and music pavilions, per the Journal's 2009 report .

Homes aren't the only things Abramovich likes to collect: The billionaire has reportedly spent hundreds of millions of dollars on yachts on his lifetime.

foto yacht ibrahimovic

Abramovich bought the superyacht Pelorus in 2004. At the time, it was the 11th-largest yacht in the world, per Yacht Harbour .

But Abramovich's second ex-wife, Malandina, got the yacht in their divorce settlement .

Before sanctions were imposed on Abramovich on March 10, a 460-foot superyacht Solaris that was linked to Abramovich   departed a Barcelona shipyard after being docked there for repairs since 2021. The $600 million vessel left Spain on March 8, and was tracked moving eastward after leaving the shipyard.

Solaris was spotted on March 12 , anchored in Montenegro.

Abramovich later spent nearly $500 million on a superyacht called Eclipse.

foto yacht ibrahimovic

At 533 feet long, Eclipse was once the world's largest yacht, though it's since been overtaken by the 590-foot Azzam , which launched in 2013, and later too by REV Ocean , a sleek, 600-foot yacht that launched in 2019.

Among Eclipse's amenities are two helicopter pads, cabins to host 36 guests and space for 70 crew, a 52-foot swimming pool — and a missile detection system.

The yacht was in a Barcelona shipyard last year for renovations, The Guardian reported in February.

However, the superyacht this week appeared to be headed in the direction of the Solaris yacht . According to data from MarineTraffic , the two superyachts could eventually meet in the Ionian sea if the Eclipse were to keep its course sailing east across the Mediterranean Sea.

Abramovich has reportedly owned at least three other yachts in his lifetime, including Le Grand Bleu .

His car collection is nothing to scoff at either.

foto yacht ibrahimovic

Abramovich reportedly has dropped more than $11 million on luxury vehicles , including the above limited edition Ferrari FXX. Only 29 were made.

Abramovich also bought a Pagani Zonda Roadster, one of only 15 ever to be made, according to The Telegraph. He has also reportedly bought  a Bugatti Veyron, a Mercedes AMG GT3, and an Aston Martin Vulcan.

Abramovich has a number of airplanes in his personal fleet, including a Boeing 767-33AER.

foto yacht ibrahimovic

The customized interior of the aircraft includes a banquet hall that seats 30 people, a kitchen, an office, and a bedroom.

Abramovich previously owned a Dassault Falcon 900, which his ex-wife  Irina Malandina got in their 2007 divorce settlement, per Boss Hunting.

Meanwhile, a $65 million Gulfstream private jet linked to Abramovich was seen flying from Israel to Istanbul on March 14. Abramovich himself was spotted at a VIP lounge in Israel  before the Gulfstream jet made its journey to Turkey.

Abramovich's personal art collection comprises works by Pablo Picasso, Lucian Freud, and Francis Bacon.

foto yacht ibrahimovic

In 2008, he spent $34 million on a piece entitled "Benefits Supervisor Sleeping" by Freud.

The very next night at Sotheby's, Abramovich paid $86.3 million for Francis Bacon's "Triptych, 1976," according to The Wall Street Journal .

But Abramovich's art collection could soon be under scrutiny. Several countries are looking to freeze Russian billionaires' foreign-owned assets, which could include some of the most valuable pieces in the world, reported The Art Newspaper.
