Boat Reviews of Pocket Cruisers and Daysailors: Tartan 245, J/9 and Beneteau First 27

Tartan 245

Sailboats are getting bigger all the time. Gone are the days when a boatbuilder like Catalina would pump out hundreds of Catalina 22s in a production run that would last decades. Profit margins for builders are far greater with larger vessels, and more and more buyers—even first-time buyers who’ve never owned a yacht—are coming into the market searching for boats 40 feet or greater. It’s kind of amazing but also true.

That’s why it’s interesting and exciting when production boats under 30 feet debut, and it’s even better when our Boat of the Year judging panel has a dedicated class of nifty new offerings to inspect, as we did for model year 2022.

What’s cool about the trio of boats that comprised this year’s Pocket Cruiser/Daysailer division—the Tartan 245,

J/Boats 28-foot J/9 and Beneteau First 27—is that each was fundamentally different than the others, designed with a specific purpose or sailor in mind. Our task as judges was to determine which boat best served its stated purpose. As a big bonus, all three boats were stout performers and a blast to sail.

With no further ado, let’s have a look at them.

Tough Little Tartan

My first thought when I peered into the cockpit of the 24-foot, Tim Jackett-designed Tartan 245 was that it reminded me very much of my ancient Pearson Ensign, which debuted in the early 1960s. Like the Ensign, the 245 is an unabashed daysailer with a long, inviting cockpit; good stowage beneath the cockpit’s coaming; and a little cuddy cabin forward for stashing sails and duffels, and for a simple berth or head while camping-cruising. When I mentioned this to Cai Svendsen, who’d commissioned the design for use as a trainer in the Judd Goldman Center’s adaptive sailing program, he expressed his fondness for the Ensign and confirmed that he’d incorporated some of its features in the brief.

But the 245 is also quite different than the old Pearson in several important ways. First, it employs a lifting keel with 900 pounds of ballast—a significant number in a vessel that displaces less than 3,000 pounds. Draft with the board down is 4 feet, 6 inches; raised, it’s a mere 1 foot, 8 inches. With a kick-up rudder, this boat can traverse very skinny water and even nudge right up to the beach.

Next, with his experience teaching sailing (novices are known to whack the occasional dock), Svendsen opted for a false, sacrificial bow that is bolted on. It can be quickly and easily swapped out if damaged (you can also spec the boat without what Tartan calls the “Crunchbow”).

Finally, like its larger siblings in the Tartan clan, the boat comes with a carbon rig (deck-stepped on the 245, with swept-back spreaders). You can also order an optional retractable carbon bowsprit for off-wind kites or reachers. For motoring in and out of the marina, there’s a 4 hp outboard. The whole package can be easily towed by a small pickup or SUV.

The profile is no-nonsense with just a hint of a sheerline, and with an open transom for safe and easy swimming (something I wish they’d thought of on my Ensign). Sail controls are atop the coachroof, and the cockpit is definitely roomy; it is meant to accommodate four students and an instructor standing aft. Available sail plans include a choice of overlapping headsails or a self-tacking jib. The whole idea is to make the boat simple and accessible, a fact underscored by its potential use in programs where a wheelchair can be rolled aboard.

Svendsen was gracious enough to take us for an afternoon spin on Chesapeake Bay in a fitful breeze that never topped 10 knots. It mattered not a whit. The tiller-steered 245, with a simple tiller extension so you perch up on the rail with a grand view, was an absolute blast to sail, quite responsive, and surprisingly quick considering its diminutive stature. (The 245 shares this prowess with the many Jackett designs in the Tartan lineup.)

When we sailed right up to the dock and dropped the main, Svendsen left us with this accurate thought: “Little boats are where you have fun. Big boats are where you spend money.”

He’s totally correct. With the Tartan 245, in the fun/cash quotient, the return on investment can be measured in miles and smiles.

J/9

Everyone can agree on how awful the pandemic has been, but for fans of the sweet sailing line of J/Boats—designed and marketed by the Johnstone family for some 45 years now—the COVID-19 cloud had a silver lining. It was at least partially responsible for the creation of the company’s latest model: the simple 28-foot daysailer dubbed the J/9.

Company president Jeff Johnstone said that the inspiration for the J/9 came when the regatta season was canceled and he spent time sailing exclusively with his family on a 23-foot J/70, the only boat that was available.

“It was the best summer,” he says. “No racing, just pleasure sailing. I rediscovered my joy for it. We got to the fall and started thinking about older sailors, this whole generation of baby boomers who might be getting out of racing but still want to sail. And we revisited the concept behind the J/100, a 33-footer that was ideal for a simple day’s sail.”

The seed was planted; simplicity would reign.

As Johnstone says, all

J/Boats perform well under main alone. Having owned both a J/24 and a J/30, I can attest that the statement is without hyperbole. At first, the idea was to perhaps go with a boat driven solely by a mainsail. “But it didn’t take long before our sailing instincts kicked in and we wanted to go upwind,” Johnstone says.

So the boat became a straightforward sloop with a furling jib. Hoist the main, unroll the headsail, and away you go. (A short, fixed sprit is available for those who must also fly a spinnaker.)

As with the Tartan 245, the focal point of the J/9 is the cockpit, and it’s clear the team spent a lot of time considering it. (That said, the J’s interior is actually quite cozy, with a pair of settees and an optional V-berth forward; I could have a fun time aboard on a little camping-cruising vacation.) Johnstone said that his team was enamored with and inspired by the Carl Schumacher-designed Alerion Express 28, a fine little sailboat, but the Johnstones made what I consider a significant improvement by going with an open transom that airs out things aesthetically and makes practical sense as a perfect swimming/boarding platform.

RELATED: 2022 Boat of the Year: Best Pocket Cruiser/Daysailer

The boat has a trio of auxiliary options: a basic outboard, an inboard diesel, or an electric Torqeedo Cruise 4.0 pod drive with a dual-blade folding prop that’s powered by a 48-volt, 5 kW lithium-ion battery with a 650-watt charger that can be plugged directly into dockside shore power. “It’s the first time in our history that we could offer an electric alternative at the same price as the diesel, not 20 percent more,” Johnstone says. “And talk about a simple installation.”

We sailed the J/9 on a cracking fall day on Chesapeake Bay in an ideal 10 to 12 knots, and man, it did not disappoint. As advertised, the layout is simplicity personified: one hand on the tiller, the other on the mainsheet. There’s no traveler, but the boom is controlled by an ingenious bridle setup. There’s a clear view of the B&G plotter on the coachroof, the solid Sparcraft vang aids in boom control, and lazy jacks for the main keep everything manageable. And the J/9 sails like a witch, notching just shy of 7 knots hard on the breeze, and topping that number cracked off on a reach.

The joy of sailing, eh? Here’s your ticket.

First Is First

When all was said and done, the winning entry in the Pocket Cruiser/Daysailer class was the Beneteau First 27.

It was a tough call because the three boats were so apart from one another—not apples and oranges, but an apple, an orange and a pear. Yet the judges were unanimous in our choice, partly because of the Beneteau’s excellent fit-and-finish, and also because we felt it best-suited for what it set out to do.

Beneteau First 27

“The mission for this boat is shorthanded distance racing, and I think that’s really interesting. It’s probably the fastest-growing segment in the racing scene,” judge Tim Murphy says. “The idea is getting sailors in a competitive environment to really develop themselves as sailors. When racing, it’s not about comfort; it’s all about the sailor getting offshore and navigating and sailing overnight, and having the sail controls and layout set up to derive and maximize the power available in the boat, which is significant. It’s a tool for really becoming an experienced sailor. I think that mission is really strong.”

To underscore that point, our test sail aboard the First 27 was sensational, conducted in 10 to 14 knots of fine Chesapeake Bay wind, with speeds topping out at almost 8 knots hard on the breeze. We did 10 knots with the asymmetric kite up and drawing—it’s set off a retractable sprit—on a tight, close reach. The little rocket is a ball to steer, with a full-width traveler to dump the main in the gusts, and twin outboard rudders that really grip the seaway and offer pinpoint control. Remember, we’re talking about a boat shorter than 27 feet here. It provides the sort of performance usually reserved for craft with significantly longer waterlines.

However, make no mistake—the First 27 is by no means a stripped-out, Spartan racing machine (well, at least the version we sailed; there are two models: one a dedicated racer and the racer/cruiser we tested). All the elements are there for real coastal cruising: a serviceable galley, head and berths, and a 15 hp Yanmar diesel. Yes, the boat was conceived for racing, but it’s also a quite adequate pocket cruiser as well. And on top of all that, it’s trailerable.

Built in Slovenia, the boat was originally marketed as the Seascape 27 before Beneteau acquired the company and rebranded the model as the First 27. Construction is top-notch: vacuum infusion with a PVC foam core, a laminate that’s light and strong. Nearly 1,350 pounds of ballast are incorporated in the lead, T-shaped bull keel (fastened to a steel blade), a significant figure in a vessel that displaces less than 4,000 pounds (the sail area/displacement ratio of 97 is not a typo). The idea was to instill super stability in a hull that planes, a concept that might seem diametrically opposed but works well in practice here. There’s even a little crash bulkhead forward. And all the related equipment is terrific: Seldén spars, Harken winches, B&G instruments and a Spinlock tiller extension, to name a few.

There’s no question that this is an athletic boat to sail and operate, and plenty of adjustments in the rig and sail plan make it eminently tweakable. In other words, there’s nothing sedate about the boat underway. But the effort put in is returned with thrills in spades. For a certain brand of sailor, the trade-off and rewards will be more than worth the sweat equity involved.

My second hand boat / J100 : A day-boat combining sailing pleasure and comfort on board

j100 yacht review

When Guy bought his J100 Nora, it was his 17th boat. Suffice it to say that the specifications were precise for this yacht, with which he rediscovers the pleasure of sailing and the possibility of weekend escapades to the islands. He tells us about the advantages and rare disadvantages of his boat.

Briag Merlet

Continuing a long line of boats

At 72, Guy is on his 17th boat. After starting out in Vaurien and other 470s, he notably owned a Muscadet or a Shamrock 9.5 . While owning a Dragon, Guy is considering changing boats and is looking for a successor, with a clear agenda: "I wanted to keep the fun in sailing and the finesse of helming, but with a slightly more comfortable dayboat, to have the possibility of doing a little extra weekend sailing from time to time. I'm based in Saint-Malo and enjoy going to Chausey for the weekend."

The J100, adapted to its program

Guy quickly decides which model he likes. After looking at the Aphrodite 101 for a while, he is interested in the J100 from J Boats and found one for sale in Lymington, UK. He bought the boat , named Nora, and brought it back to Saint-Malo , seduced by its suitability for the program. "I had spoken to the boat's designer, Rod Johnstone. He had designed the boat for him, to be able to sail it single-handed around the Isle of Wight. You can sail 30 nautical miles a day. We're just as good with six people in a regatta as we are alone on a cruising trip. The boat is in category A."

j100 yacht review

A dayboat with the facilities for the weekend

Launched in 2005 by the J Composites shipyard , the J100 has a few dozen units sailing in France. 9.96 m long and 2.80 m wide, the boat has a ballast of 1.3 tons for a displacement of 3 tons, which gives it a nice stiffness to the canvas, with a contained width. Its rigging without bowsprit and with a genoa without overlap, facilitates the management in solo.

j100 yacht review

It has a beautiful mainsail of 44 m2. A Yanmar engine of 14 horsepower Inboard comes in supplement in case of total absence of wind, with 40 liters of fuel in the tank. Guy specifies: "We're going six knots under motor and six knots under sail upwind!"

j100 yacht review

With a draft of 1.75 meters, it provides access to a good amount of mooring space even in the waters of Northern Brittany .

The large cockpit accommodates the crew comfortably while sailing," says Guy. "We're out on the boat most of the time, so the large cockpit is essential. You can lie down in it. Being not very wide, it's also a good place to sail ."

j100 yacht review

The interior layout includes the essentials, with a saloon with a teak table, a toilet at the bow with a sink, a small gas stove, a waxing cupboard, an icebox and 4 berths.

j100 yacht review

The J100 will trade in 2023 at around 78,000 euros.

The pleasure of sailing

Guy's boat has all the options to favor performance under sail, with a carbon mast, a rod rig and a hydraulic backstay... And her sailing behavior is the strong point that Guy was looking for: "The steering finesse is close to that of the Dragon, thanks to a long rudder. The boat is stiff in light airs. You can really enjoy sailing. The asymmetrical spinnaker on the bow is handy, even if gybing is a tiny bit more complicated."

j100 yacht review

Guy also finds benefits in his efficient interior: "The roof gives a nice volume, even in the front over the sink. It has everything you need."

j100 yacht review

The other side of the performance coin

Who says simple, elegant and low on the water, also says some disadvantages, which agrees Guy. "The headroom is 1.45 meters which is low, but it allows to keep a nice silhouette. The freeboard is low, so obviously, in 25 knots and chop ,the boat gets a little wet, and that makes sense!"

After 10 years of sailing, Guy is thinking about parting with it, but is already looking at other J Boats models.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

Sabre Spirit or J-100

j100 yacht review

  • Add to quote

I have a friend who is looking for a boat. He would like to do beer can racing and spend a few nights with his family. As fast as possible and still be able to single-hand. I'm not familiar with these two boats, they seem to have good PHRF numbers for their size. He is willing to go 6' plus on draft if he has to for the speed. How do these two boats compare to each other and the competition?

j100 yacht review

The J-100 is a really wonderful boat that is a nice to day sail and should be easy to single- hand. They are a good race boat that should be able to sail to her rating. Obviously newer race designs will be faster but the J-100 are still very quick. The Sabre Spirit is a silly caricature of an old style race boat with some modern touches. They probably are okay as a daysailer but don't belong on a race course unless owned by a masochist. That said, they are nicely built and look pretty at anchor if someone else owns her. Jeff

j100 yacht review

The J-100 comes in a lot of configurations. Hard to sail to its rating unless you have the sprit version and optional larger headsails. The Spirit is beautiful and well built. Unfortunately not that competitive as a racer unless you are doing beer cans against a bunch of cruisers. An exponentially less expensive alternative to those boats is to get a J/92s or J/92. Install some NUTeak in the cockpit sole. Add a Tides strong track , roller furling and you end up with an easily handled quick boat that is quite attractive. Interior very similar to the J-100 and o'k for weekending for a couple and smaller kids. https://www.jboats.com/j92s Nuteak Pictures - Synthetic Teak Marine Decking

Why not throw a C&C 99 into the mix? Good performance with decent accommodations? Matches up closer to a J32 though. What they lack in horse power they make up for in the accommodations.

j100 yacht review

It seems to me the Spirit and the J100 are apples and oranges! The Sabre looks lovely inside, with lots of beautiful joinery etc. The J100 is much more utilitarian. JBoats are built for performance. Ergonomics are more geared towards racing. If your primary purpose is racing the Jboat is the obvious choice of the 2. (That's not to say that I would choose either one, but that would be a subject for another thread!) Sent from my SM-G960W using Tapatalk

j100 yacht review

Hey, The J boat will sail great. I don’t think a family of 4 would be happy spending a weekend onboard. It is very spartan below. As mentioned, a C&C 99 would be a much better choice IF you really wanted to take 4 people for a weekend cruise somewhere. Barry

The trouble with the C&C 99 is that they can't sail to their rating, a racing sail inventory would be disproportionately expensive to buy and maintain and they are harder to single hand than the fractional rig boats. I do like the suggestion of a J-92 but agree with the comments on the interior. Another option is the J-97 if you can find one. Another option might be something like a Farr 1020, or Tripp 33. Both are still competitive under PHRF and both should have similar or much nicer accomodations than the other two boats under consideration. Jeff

Swiftsure Yachts

Brilliant is the ideal daysailer. An easily driven hull with moderate sailplan and simple sail handling systems allow the J/100 to be effortlessly singlehanded. Mainsheet and genoa sheets are easily controlled by the skipper from the aft end of the cockpit while guests at the forward end may relax out of the way of the action. Her spacious cockpit provides comfortable seating for six or more for an afternoon sail – or plenty of room to stretch out and take a nap or enjoy a picnic at anchor. Two large cockpit lazarettes and a stern locker provide more than ample storage space for fenders, sails and other cruising gear. A transom swimstep with folding stainless swim ladder allows easy boarding from a dinghy or after a swim. Below deck, her interior provides enough accommodations for a short weekend cruise while maintaining the theme of simplicity and functionality. Molded gelcoat surfaces with white bulkheads and teak trim are easy to maintain. A separate forward cabin with head and sink will sleep two in the v-berth – although she could accommodate four if desired.

Winner of Sailing World’s 2005 “Overall Boat of the Year” award, the J/100 is excels at her design intent of providing a platform for the pure enjoyment of sailing. A light touch on the tiller, the feel of power and ease of handling convinced us that she would be a fantastic choice for daysailing, club racing or the occasional summer weekend cruise. With a non overlapping jib on a furler and an asymmetric spinnaker designed to be tacked to a stainless ring at the bow, performance is attainable for even the casual sailor. Simplicity is the theme and fun is the result.

The Updated IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide, the First IWC with a Silicon Hairspring

For the first time, iwc schaffhausen relies on innovative silicon material in one of its manufacture movements..

j100 yacht review

This year, IWC brings the emblematic Portugieser collection under the spotlight, introducing several stunning new additions to the collection, including the impressive Eternal Calendar and updates to several iconic models, such as the chronograph and the 7-day Automatic . On the occasion of Watches and Wonders Shanghai, the brand unveils a new version of its Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide . Now available in steel with an obsidian black dial, this sportier model debuts an updated movement featuring a silicon hairspring for the first time at IWC.

Originally presented in 2020, the gold Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide introduced a complication that could not be more appropriate for the nautical-themed “Yacht Club” sub-collection. The original, specific functionality of the model relies on two sub-counters linked to moon phases and tide calculations.

j100 yacht review

The sub-dial at 6 o’clock displays the expected times for the next high and low tides. The interval between two high tides is consistently 12 hours and 24 minutes. After an initial calibration (via the crown) using tide tables for a specific location, the indicator remains highly accurate, with a deviation of only 10 minutes over 100 years.

IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Moon and Tide stainless steel IW344002 - first IWC silicon hairspring - review - 5

The double moon phase display at 12 o’clock, featuring IWC’s signature double moon for both hemispheres, has been enhanced to indicate spring and neap tides. This provides valuable information about the tide’s strength. Spring tides, which bring particularly high water levels, occur during the full moon and new moon phases.

j100 yacht review

This new iteration of the Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide introduces a more modern, sportier aesthetic to the model. Now crafted in steel, the case is still 44.6mm in diameter but is now water-resistant to 100m. The Obsidian Black dial is subtly enhanced with red and blue accents, adding a dynamic touch to the overall design.

j100 yacht review

One of the key upgrades is related to the movement powering these two complications. The new calibre 82836, an evolution of the 82835, marks IWC’s first use of a silicon hairspring. Operating at 4Hz, the balance is visible through the exhibition caseback. The automatic winding mechanism employs a Pellaton system, enhanced with virtually wear-free ceramic components, and builds up a power reserve of 60 hours in the mainspring.

j100 yacht review

Although the brand hasn’t provided further details, this first model to feature a  silicon hairspring is likely not the last. While opinions on modern silicon hairsprings vary, this material offers undeniable technical advantages. This synthetic material is thermally stable, non-magnetic, lightweight, durable, and ideal for crafting hairsprings that outperform those made from traditional metal alloys. Silicon hairsprings have been around for about 20 years, initially restricted to a few brands by a patent held by CSEM as part of a collaboration between the Swatch Group, Patek Philippe, and Rolex (plus Ulysse Nardin). With the patent now expired, and despite new patents being filed, it was expected that more brands would start using silicon hairsprings. For more details, check out our article here .

Good luck with an almost 45mm watch in this day and age. 41-42mm would be much nicer in my very personal opinion and much closer to the sweet spot of 40-42mm for a sports or sporty watch. 13.4mm height is very good for the complications this watch offers!

  • Average battery life with LED
  • No IP68 rating
  • Limited light effects
  • The boAt Stone Lumos is a head-turner
  • It is priced at Rs 6,999 and is a well-rounded portable speaker
  • It can deliver good sound for bass lovers

Portable speaker with LED projection gives cinematic feels

The boAt Stone Lumos is a head-turner, not just because of its sound but also its design. The first thing you will notice is its robust and somewhat rugged build, which screams durability. Weighing at 2kg, it is not the lightest speaker but is solid enough to feel substantial without being overly bulky.

Encased in a solid matte-finish exterior, the speaker feels premium in hand, while the cylindrical shape with a sturdy mesh grille provides a good grip and portability experience. The handle on the top of the speaker adds to its portability, allowing you to carry it around easily or even hang it on a hook. The speaker is IPX4-rated, making it sweat and splash-resistant. While having support for the IP68 water-resistant rating would have been better, the IPX4 rating isn't bad. You can use the speaker at the poolside or on a hiking trip without worrying about damage.

'A dad in plaid' accepts the Democratic VP nomination

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz played up his role as the everyman on the Democratic ticket at the Democratic National Convention Wednesday night by talking about his time as a high school teacher and coach while accepting his party's nomination for vice president.

Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar introduced her home-state governor as a “dad in plaid" as Walz addressed Americans who had no idea who he was until Kamala Harris picked him as her running mate two weeks ago.

  • "I haven't given a lot of big speeches like this, but I have given a lot of pep talks" : Introduced by former football players he used to coach, Walz came across as direct, unpretentious, blunt and funny.
  • More from Wednesday : The DNC convention's third night was dominated mostly by speakers who talked up Harris' record as a prosecutor, whether fighting cartels or domestic abusers. It also continued to lean into the theme of freedom, particularly on reproductive rights.
  • Harris is set to accept the Democratic presidential nomination Thursday night, making her with the first Black and Asian American woman topping a presidential ballot.

Here's the rundown of the final night of the DNC and more from USA TODAY's reporters in Chicago:

Mpox often manifests in a rash on the hands, feet, chest, face, mouth and around the genital area. There’s no specific medication for the painful and itchy lesions caused by mpox, but doctors say symptoms can be managed with over-the-counter medicines. Read more
