Llewellyn Howland established Concordia Company, Inc. in 1926. He named the company after a famous Howland family whaling vessel. In 1932 Llewellyn transferred the company to his son Waldo, and Marblehead racing celebrity, C. Raymond Hunt. They redrew the terms of the corporation to more closely fit with the boat business they had created and operated the company as a successful boat brokerage through the 1930's. Concordia Company began designing boats to maximize Ray's talents. Its first design, a 12-foot frostbite dinghy, Plover, was built by Pat O'Connell, a former Lawley employee. The company continued building frostbiters and other small boats until 1936, when it received its first commission for a larger boat - the 28-foot Weepecket. Commissions for larger boats continued and Concordia's name began to be associated with fine quality workmanship and well-designed craft. In 1938 the company moved from Boston to Fairhaven, Massachusetts, and added Wilder B. Harris to its staff as a naval architect. The move brought Waldo Howland closer to Buzzards Bay, where he had spent his boyhood years sailing. But the year also brought a devastating blow to the company in the form of the Great Hurricane of '38, which ruined many of the boats moored in Padanaram Harbor. Among those destroyed was the Howland family's own Escape, a Norwegian pilot boat designed by Colin Archer and built in 1890. Llewellyn hired Concordia Company to design and build a boat to replace this loss. He wanted a daysailer that could race and cruise in the choppy seas and heavy afternoon breezes of Buzzards Bay. What started as design number fourteen, just another Concordia boat, became the classic Concordia yawl, one of the most successful and long-lived stock racer/cruisers ever built. When the name Concordia is mentioned, it is the yawl, with her distinctive star and moon covestripe, that comes to mind. Concordia Company commissioned 103 Concordia yawls between 1938 and 1966. The German shipyard, Abeking and Rasmussen , constructed all but four of the yawls. Oyster Bay yachtsman Drayton Cochran commissioned the first Abeking and Rasmussen-built Concordia yawl, beginning the unique relationship that would develop between the two companies. At the time they were building Concordias, Abeking and Rasmussen were primarily involved in building commercial vessels. The company was able to produce the yawl at a very reasonable price, leaving many of the final details to the Concordia yard to complete. The yawls were built out of a relationship of trust and good will - Abeking and Rasmussen actually shipped complete boats to Concordia before receiving final payment. By the 1960's, economic forces rendered it impossible to continue producing the yawls in Germany. Irene, hull #103, was the last Concordia to be shipped from Lemwerder in 1966. A tribute to the relationship between Concordia and Abeking Rasmussen sits in Concordia's office today. A scale model of a Concordia yawl, complete in every detail, was built by A&R's model builder, Herr Potzka. It arrived unheralded in the forecastle of the 75th boat built by Abeking and Rasmussen, Westray. Waldo sold the company to Bill Pinney in 1969. Bill owned the company until 1981, helping to solidify the good reputation the company had built. During this time, Concordia continued to build the Beetle Cat sailboat, and began developing its facilities to accommodate the ever-increasing need for boatyard services on quality fiberglass yachts. Brodie MacGregor first visited Concordia Company in 1964 with a New York Yacht Club cruise and developed an immediate fondness for the town of Padanaram and for Concordia Company itself. Ten years later, after earning an M.B.A. from Harvard University, Brodie moved to Padanaram just 2 blocks away from the boatyard. He worked in the office for three years and ultimately purchased the company from Bill Pinney in 1981. The Howland Family, who originally split the business and the property of South Wharf in 1969 when they sold the business to Pinney, put the South Wharf property on the market in 2006. Concordia failed to win the bid to retain the waterfront property. As of August 1, 2007, Concordia Boatyard moved full operations to its 14 acres at 300 Gulf Road, purchased by MacGregor in 1987 one mile west of Padanaram Harbor. The property was formerly home to Concordia Custom Yachts (generally fiberglass custom boatbuilders), and Hunt Yachts. Concordia Boatyard also used the property for storage. 300 Gulf Road offers superior workshop space and building facilities combined with room to expand. Concordia continues to do what they do best -- offer all aspects of yacht maintenance and project work with excellent customer service at an economical price.

SAVANNAH for sale

SAVANNAH is a luxury 27m sailing sloop, built by Concordia Custom Yachts in 1997.  The essence of elegance aboard and grace under sail was perfectly captured by  Pedrick Yachts Design. Drawing from the grandeur of a bygone era, Pedrick Yacht Designs matched graceful  proportions and a carefully planned interior with a modern underbody and advanced  composite engineering. The result is a strikingly beautiful traditional styled yacht.  However, in truth Savannah is ‘wolf in sheeps clothing’ thanks to her modern carbon  composite construction & optimised keel/hull design. Savannah accelerates to exhilarating speeds. Engineered to be strong yet light,  her efficient keel produces high sail-carrying power and superior performance to  windward. Savannah’s thrilling performance under sail has made her a winning “spirit  of tradition” racer. Her long overhangs and low freeboard were inspired by the magnificent J-Class  yachts of the 1930’s. SAVANNAH’S striking lines, low freeboard and flush deck is  accented by varnished teak coamings and traditional skylights. Below decks the  1930’s era continues with finely detailed panelled mahogany joinery in the full beam  sumptuous saloon and cabins. Below the waterline, SAVANNAH has an efficient & fast cruising hull form, a deep  fin keel and spade rudder. Utilising the latest composite engineering methods, her  construction is of carbon fibre, kevlar and foam which creates a lightweight yet very  robust hull. Savannah accelerates to exhilarating speeds. Engineered to be strong yet  light, her efficient keel produces high sail-carrying power and superior performance to  windward. Savannah’s thrilling performance under sail has made her a winning “spirit of  tradition” racer of repute. Achieving a particularly good rating, it is no wonder  SAVANNAH continues to turn heads on the racecourse where she has achieved  podium results in Antigua, Maine, St Tropez and Cowes. This is a fine yacht and not  to be missed

Raymond Hunt, was a part of the design team that drew the lines for Cals and Pearsons in the 80’s.The boat is a one-off custom build by Concordia Custom Yachts of Dartmouth, MA, built for the original owners - Kiley and Brody MacGregor, President of Concordia. The boat was the second boat produced by the company and was constructed on a male mold, incorporating foam core in the build of the hull, deck, and bulkheads. The boat shows no hint of an IOR influence on the hull surface. The designer indicated that the IOR rule was not a factor in the design. The boat was designed, built, moored, and raced in Dartmouth, MA throughout its entire lifetime until January of 2019. Boat was raced in the 1990 Newport to Bermuda Race, Block Island, and numerous regattas on Buzzards Bay from 1983 - 2008. Boat raced in local club races on Lake Ontario in 19, 21, and 22.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Garden design #611. Originally the TRUANT 33 built by Truant Marine, BC, CA. (1977) The tooling was acquired by Saturna Yachts of Saanichton, BC.(1981?) For the SATURNA 33 the deck and coach roof were re-designed (by W. Garden) The standard ‘Offshore’ version is shown here. A Pilothouse version was also available. Boats were also sold in ‘kit’ form. The molds were later acquired by Wiggers Custom Yachts where a few more were built. It is thought that less than 50 boats were completed to this basic design. Thanks to Saturna owner, Bob Coulson, for providing additional information.

Construction Details:

The hull is laminated from unidirectional and biaxial ‘S-glass’ skins, vacuum bagged over H-80 Divinycell crosslinked foam and AL-600 Baltek cores above the waterline, and H-80 and Airex foam below. There are high concentrations of unidirectional ‘S-glass (in lieu of carbon fiber, now penalized for IMS) along the hull backbone and bilge stringers. An integrated gridwork of deep keel floors, partial bulkheads, longitudinals, and ring frames supports rig and keel loads, controls headstay tension, and prevents shell distortion.

The deck is a similar laminate of ‘S-glass’ skins over the same H-80 Divinicell and AL-600 cores used in the hull. Unidirectional ‘S-glass’ reinforces deck stringers, which take the heavy compression loads from the headstay and backstay, and which are continuous from stem to stern. All laminates are vacuum bagged and post cured, and epoxy resins are used throughout.

Noteworthy Details

Both T-42′s boast a ballast/displacement ratio of over 60%, and nearly half the ballast weight is carried inside the hull. Most of this inside ballast is carefully shaped to fit the hull and very heavily glassed in place, forming a ‘lead core’ beam supporting the mast step, and massive lead and glass ‘backing plates’ distributing the keel bolt and grounding loads over a large area of hull shell. This ballasting approach results not only in a remarkably robust structure, but also in a substantial speed advantage upwind, due to an unusually ‘soft’ motion in a seaway resulting from the low pitch moment of inertia. Also contributing to the high stability and low pitch moment are a very sophisticated four spreader HallSpar rigs.

Rating rules come and go, (along with their inevitable type-forming and loopholes), but good all-around boats are always fast and fun, and they keep right on winning no matter what rule is in vogue. The T-42 is an especially impressive case in point; they were designed for IMS, they were consistent winners under that rule, and they are still winning in the same configurations (no significant changes) in PHRF, ORR and IRC. They have proven to be rugged, seaworthy, versatile, fast and fun, and winners under any handicap system. Comments from two DRUMBEAT owners sum it up well for these boats: One chuckled, after an early string of high end race wins, “This boat is a license to steal!” A later owner lamented, “I never should have sold that boat!”
