The naval architect probably best known for his design of the 31ft Taeping, passed away peacefully at his home in Jersey. Harriett Robinson reports

Alan Buchanan, the celebrated naval archictect credited with designing the first glassfibre yacht in Europe, died peacefully in Jersey on Monday 26 January.

Having trained as an aircraft engineer, he started work as a draughtsman at De Havilland aircraft factory before setting up as a boat designer.

Orignally based in Burnham-on-Crouch, Buchanan moved his office to Jersey in the 1960s. Here he enjoyed a long and distinguished career in yacht design that included his own succesful racing yacht Taeping , a 31ft Bermudan sloop that came 2nd in the East Anglian Offshore Individual Championship in her first season.

From the early 1970s Buchanan continued to work from his home in Jersey and is credited with having designed upwards of 2,400 boats in his career.

In 1979, in recognition of his achievements, he was awarded the medal of the Small Craft Group of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects.

Buchanan was well-known for his refusal to retire, drawing beautiful yachts well into his eighties.

General information

MALOUINE is the first of six Prior 37s designed by Alan Buchanan and built at Priors of Burnham.

She has been owned by her current owners since 2000, who have traveled with her on the Channel Coast, the west coast of Scotland, the Shetland Islands, Norway and in the Baltic Sea. For the past eight years she has been in the care of Veneveistämö Janne Pettersson Oy, Helsinki’s leading wooden boat specialist.

After Brexit, MALOUINE is registered for tax purposes as a European boat, so no tax is due when sold to the EU – all documents are available, as is an extensive archive of history including design and construction plans. The owner himself has known the boat since 1968.

MALOUINE was built in 1962 as a cruising yacht for Sir Harry Broadhurst when he retired from offshore racing. She is constructed entirely of teak on Canadian rock elm frames with bronze/copper fittings and lead keel.

The deck is teak on plywood over pine deck beams with an epoxy coated superstructure. She is top-rigged, absolutely seaworthy, easy to handle and has proven herself on extensive trips, among other things – Atlantic and Iceland proven.

Maintenance at the shipyard included annual painting and coating work. Other essential work carried out:

  • 2003 – new teak deck
  • 2010 – re-rigged
  • 2012 – rewired
  • 2013 – new fuel tank
  • 2015 – Keel bolts checked (1 replaced) and keel/hull connection resealed, bilge cleaned and repainted
  • 2019 – new upholstery
  • 2022 – Engine overhaul (Volvo 2003)
  • 2023 – new toilet.

Classic wooden sailing yacht for sale

49′ Alan Buchanan Bermudan Yawl

£ 125,000

A superb bermudan yawl designed by Allan Buchanan, built by Mashfords of Plymouth to Lloyds 100A1 standard. Remarkably she was kept in class until 2004. Major professional refit between 2018 and 2022 preparing her long distance family cruising. All teak planking, teak decks and teak superstructure. 8 berths in total. Very elegant and nicely maintained yacht, a capable and long legged cruising boat that is really the epitome of the classic yacht.

Boat Details

  • Description

49’ Alan Buchanan bermudan yawl built by Mashords of Plymouth to Lloyds100A1 in 1962.

Now in only her 3 rd ownership, she was kept in Lloyds classification until 2004 when a lack of a qualified surveyor near her then home port made classification unrealistically expensive.  She is an extraordinarily well built boat using top class materials and is a testament to the skills and quality of workmanship at Mashfords Shipyard.

Bought by the present owners in 2018, she was taken to Gweek Quay, Falmouth and underwent a major professional refit to put the boat back into top condition in readiness for some planned long distance sailing.  A full list of the work done can be seen below.

She has proved to be an excellent family cruising yacht, easily sailed single handed if required with the aid of her modern autopilot, roller furling headsail and numerous self tailing winches.

The cutter headed yawl rig allows for a great variety of sail combinations making her a versatile and capable yacht.

With stunning good looks and great performance, this long legged capable vessel is the epitome of the classic yacht.

BROKER'S COMMENTS

In 1960 Alan Buchanan was persuaded to design a yacht very similar to his own, also to be built by Priors, for a friend. SINBAD was the result and she proved even faster than his own! A recent former owner, an experienced yachtsman, had her interior sympathetically and cleverly reworked: he replaced her sails and focused on all areas to make her a very usable family cruiser as well as potent classic racer – and succeeded. Under her current ownership SINBAD has wintered in recent years at the Elephant boatyard, who have carried out regular work and maintenance, and in 2012 also fitted a new teak deck.

Interested in SINBAD in more detail.

2021 - Engine complete overall - Heat exchanger end caps; impeller; flexible couplings - New raw water Vetus filter - Replaced rubber element mounts - New tides marine seal assembly - Checked and adjusted shaft alignment; rope cutter service - All brightwork back to wood and re-varnished - Topsides sanded and repainted - Mast repainted - All running rigging renewed - New kicking strap arrangement - New stainless steel reefing hooks - All standing rigging new - All seacocks serviced or renewed; all bolts changed - All new covers - Baby Blake WC parts renewed - Mast and deck lights to LED - Jib roller gear taken apart and fully services - All winches stripped to individual parts; fully serviced - 2 x New bilge pumps; new switches - New solar panel; changed wiring - USB plug fitted 2012 Already in good condition on acquisition by her current owner, SINBAD’s existing deck however did need replacing. A new teak deck was laid in 2012 by The Elephant Boatyard. She has been equipped at this time with a new stainless steel pulpit, new bow anchor rollers, a new brass-framed portlight at the fore end of the trunk cabin, and a new brass rudder shoe.

HISTORICAL NOTES

SINBAD is one of only two - then state of the art - racing yachts built to this design. She and her near sister TAITSING proved to be very fast and finely balanced, but in one main respect they differed: with the advantage of a masthead rig, SINBAD could make greater speed over her ¾ rigged near sister. On her maiden voyage, delivery from the Prior yard in Essex to North Wales, she entered the Round the Island Race and won. Subsequently, from 1988 to 1992 under the ownership of Kathy Kilbey, SINBAD OF ABERSOCH was actively campaigned in RORC Ocean Racing events, including winning her class in the 1989 Fastnet Race. At that time there were only a handful of 1960s Class ll racing yachts in a competitive enough state to race, the most successful of which was the Jacksons' SUNSTONE, a Sparkman & Stevens wooden yacht which usually arrived well ahead of everyone else, including many of the then modern plastic fleet of Sigma 38s etc. She then became more of a family boat, cruising in Scottish, home and north French waters for several years before being sold in 1985 – only to be bought back again a few years later by the same owner – then more recently sold again to be sailed mainly in the Solent.

Construction

- 7/8 in/ 21mm Afromosia and mahogany planking - Canadian rock elm bent timbers - Main keel, stem, stern post and horn timber of iroko - Mahogany rudder - Hardwood main deck beams and carlins - Teak comings - Teak decks (2012) - Cast one pour lead keel - Teak and holly cabin sole - Newer trunk cabin

Deck equipment and ground tackle

- Tiller steering - 2 x Lewmar self tailing sheet winches - 2 x Lewmar Non-self tailing sheet winches - Dorade vents and boxes over coach roof either side of mast - Deck hot and cold shower stbd by cockpit - Lewmar electric windlass for chain and warp; remote control - CQR anchor with 66 ft/ 20 m chain and 100 ft/ 30 m warp

Accommodation and domestic equipment

From the lazarette aft to long cockpit, with removable generous folding table, the bridge deck leads to the sliding hatch companionway steps down over the engine casing to the main cabin. This has teak trimmed cedar and fir wood joinery imbuing a warm ambience with white painted deck head for good light. Passing by the galley and navigation area half bulkheads reveal. - Saloon with settee berth to port - Converts to double if required using the twisting top table - Stowage shelves and lockers outboard and below - Bulkhead opening forward leads to the head - Baby Blake WC with doorway to port - Fore cabin with V-berths; stowage under - Open hanging locker to starboard - Chain locker forward Coming aft through the saloon - Single settee berth to port, stowage under and outboard - Half bulkheads and grab rails - Galley on stbd side - Wallas Marine Safeflame Ceramic 100 paraffin grill - Stainless steel sink - Pressure system hot and cold water; electric sink pump-out - Isotherm top loading fridge with stowage around and below - Generous Navigation area with large chart table - Clock and Barometer - Drawers under and locker to port - Quarter berth stbd aft

All Alan Buchanan Boats For Sale

The celebrated naval architect Alan Buchanan, credited with designing the first glass fibre yacht in Europe, sadly died peacefully at home in Jersey on Monday, 26 January 2015.

Born in 1922, Alan Buchanan first trained as an aircraft engineer. He started working as a young draughtsman at De Havilland aircraft factory in Stag Lane Aerodrome Edgware London before setting up as a boat designer.

Originally based in Burnham-on-Crouch, Alan Buchanan moved his office to Jersey in the 1960s. Here Alan enjoyed a long and distinguished career in yacht design. This design included his own very successful racing yacht, the Taeping, a 31ft Bermudan sloop. Entering the East Anglian Offshore Individual Championship, the Taeping she wone in her first season.

From early in 1970, Buchanan continued to work from his home in Jersey and is credited with having designed more than 2,400 boats in his long career. In 1979 and recognition of his outstanding achievements, Alan Buchanan was awarded a medal from the Small Craft Group of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects.

Alan Buchanan’s boats are highly regarded by enthusiasts and owners, and many of his designs are considered classics within the sailing community. Owners often describe Buchanan's boats as blending performance with elegance, making them highly desirable for both racing and cruising. Here are some common traits and feedback from owners' groups about his yachts:

Classic Design and Aesthetics

  • Timeless Appeal : Buchanan's yachts are often praised for their timeless, classic lines. The traditional designs, especially in wooden boats, are admired for their beauty both in and out of the water. The yachts typically feature long overhangs, graceful sheer lines, and well-proportioned decks, giving them an elegant appearance that stands out in any marina.
  • Attention to Detail : Owners often note the craftsmanship and attention to detail in Buchanan’s designs, whether the boats were built in wood or, later, in glass fibre. The boats are often described as not just functional, but also as works of art.

Sailing Performance

  • Balanced Performance : Buchanan's yachts are known for their balanced performance on the water. They tend to have a moderate to heavy displacement, providing a stable and comfortable ride, especially in rough conditions. This makes them popular among those who appreciate a yacht that performs well in various weather conditions.
  • Racing Success : Several Buchanan-designed yachts, like the  Taeping , have achieved significant success in racing, especially in offshore and coastal events. Owners frequently mention how well these boats handle and perform in competitive sailing, often outperforming more modern designs due to their excellent handling characteristics and solid build.

Seaworthiness and Durability

  • Solid Construction : Buchanan’s yachts, particularly those made of glass fibre, are noted for their robust construction. Owners often speak about the durability of these vessels, with many boats still in active use decades after they were built. The strong build quality makes them suitable for long voyages and challenging sea conditions.
  • Seaworthiness : These boats are highly regarded for their seaworthiness. Many owners trust them for long-distance cruising, including transatlantic crossings. The designs tend to have deep keels and well-protected cockpits, which contribute to their capability in offshore sailing.

Comfort and Livability

  • Comfortable Interiors : Despite their performance capabilities, Buchanan's yachts are also known for comfortable, well-thought-out interiors. Owners often mention the clever use of space, with practical layouts that make them enjoyable for extended cruising.
  • Livable for Long Cruises : The boats are often equipped with ample storage, and the interior designs are both functional and comfortable, making them suitable for long-term living aboard.

Community and Legacy

  • Passionate Ownership : There is a strong sense of community among Buchanan yacht owners. Many of these yachts are maintained with great care, and there is a shared passion for preserving and sailing these classic vessels. Owners' groups and forums are active, where tips, advice, and stories are shared about maintaining and sailing Buchanan’s designs.
  • Legacy of Innovation : Owners and enthusiasts often express a deep respect for Buchanan’s contributions to naval architecture, particularly in how he transitioned traditional wooden designs to the use of glass fibre, without losing the essence of what made his boats special.

Overall, Alan Buchanan’s boats are celebrated not just for their technical achievements, but for the joy they continue to bring to their owners. Whether racing, cruising, or simply appreciating their craftsmanship, Buchanan’s yachts are seen as a lasting testament to his skill and vision as a naval architect.

Broker's Comments

It's not often I struggle with where to begin when writing my Broker's comments but this Alan Buchanan Vashti Class yacht simply stopped me in my tracks when I first stepped aboard.

The quality of the craftsmanship of this yacht has to be seen to be fully appreciated. In my opinion she is one of the most beautifully handcrafted yachts I have ever come across.

The current owners purchased this yacht over twenty years ago. They had a clear vision then which has taken them over twenty years of hard work and painstaking attention to detail. One of the owners has spent his entire life as professional boatbuilder having been apprenticed by his father to build boats to Lloyds standard. And you can certainly see that lifetime of craftsmanship and skill in every aspect of this yacht. In fact, the owners have told me that she has in fact been rebuilt from the keel up and so in effect, she is a brand new boat. And that is certainly the feeling I got from the time spent onboard.

During the rebuilding and renovation of this yacht, the owners even met with the original designer Alan Buchanan and had meetings to discuss the boat's ongoing renovation to ensure that they met with his approval, which they did!

Whilst walking around the deck of this boat what struck me, apart from her beautiful lines and craftsmanship, was the rich, deep contrasting colours of the different woods and the deep shine through the thick protective varnish. This, mixed in with the highly polished chrome of the windows, portholes and winches, just made her whole appearance an absolute joy to behold.

Stepping into the deep, wide cockpit, again the craftsmanship and attention to detail is just lovely. The cockpit also benefits from a dog house built onto the coachroof which, when combined with the cockpit tent, provides great protection when sailing or moored up in inclement weather.

Stepping down below into the saloon galley area, again the richness of the different timbers and high quality finish everywhere truly make her a very lovely place to be. She has such a feeling of quality and strength and is certainly somewhere that I wouldn't hesitate in spending many a day, month or year aboard.

Moving forward on the port side there is a nice large heads with shower and a Blakes sea toilet that has been lovingly restored with all of the chrome work having been re-chromed. Then, just ahead is a spacious v-berth in the forward cabin.

The galley is large with plenty of stowage, a deep fridge, a deep twin sink and the cooker is full size with a large oven and four burner rings.

The nav station is large, well equipped and has a high level of specification when it comes to the navigation equipment and aids onboard. The chart table is also large and will easily accommodate chartwork.

Just behind the nav station is a nice sized quarter berth with a with a window letting light flood through from the cockpit area.

All in all, this boat has made my year... she was an absolute delight to be aboard and once you contact me to arrange a viewing, I'm sure you will be as awestruck as I was when you first step aboard.

Don't miss out on this stunning, rare beauty!!

This boat was dry-docked for two weeks to facilitate the complete removal and reapplication of its antifouling coating. During this period, she also received a comprehensive inspection from the owner, which included changing both anodes. The vessel was relaunched as August 2024 drew to a close.

These boat details are subject to contract. Note: Offers on the asking price may be considered.

Wooden Ships Comments on this Alan Buchanan Bermudan Yawl

37′ bermudan yawl designed by Alan Buchanan and built by G.F. Smeeth, Dedham, Essex in 1966 to Lloyds 100A1.

One of the larger yachts built by this small Essex yard, evidently a quality yacht when built using top class materials and showing some very fine traditional workmanship.  The design has notable beam for an English yacht of her day with generous freeboard making her a stiff and dry yacht in a seaway with a large amount of internal volume. The cock-pit is large for the size of yacht and with wheel steering instead of a tiller sweeping the back of the cock-pit, it is very comfortable for larger parties.

Unusually for her time, the coach-roof runs forward only as far as the mast leaving wide side decks and a clear fore deck.  Her yawl rig makes her an easily handled yacht in a breeze and she sails well under fore sail and mizzen alone thus eliminating the problems of reefing a big mainsail as the wind gets up.

Part time live aboard by the present owner, a professional seafarer, since 2012 and cruised many thousands of miles around the Mediterranean and back and forth across the Atlantic.  Hauled out every year for careful maintenance, she has clearly been loved and properly used in the present ownership and has now returned to the UK to find a deserving new owner.

Exiled russian oligarch’s 257’ superyacht amaryllis seen towed through palm beach.

The Amaryllis being towed past the former mansion of Henry Flagler, built in 1902

By John Jannarone and Alan Hatfield

The 257’ superyacht Amaryllis apparently owned by exiled Russian oligarch Andrey Borodin was towed past Palm Beach, FL on Friday morning, according to a visual account by CorpGov .

The yacht, whose owner is frequently cited as Mr. Borodin by enthusiast publications, moved slowly through the Lake Worth lagoon where bridges were raised for its passage. A towboat with flashing lights about 150 feet ahead pulled the Amaryllis , built by German shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen in 2011.

While CorpGov could not officially confirm Mr. Borodin as the owner of the vessel, his wife, socialite Tatiana Korsakova, has posted dozens of Instagram photos and videos aboard the Amaryllis. A yacht broker interviewed by CorpGov confirmed that Ms. Korsakova is indeed aboard the Amaryllis in the photos and videos.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Tatiana Korsakova (@tati_vk)

The sighting comes as billions of dollars in Russian-owned yachts have been seized around the world as a result of international sanctions. CNN has published an extensive list of seized vessels, which were taken in harbor cities including Mallorca, Spain and London.

However, it is unclear if the Amaryllis was being seized or voluntarily towed. Very large yachts often choose to be towed because bridges are required to raise for them, according to the yacht broker.

The former Bank of Moscow chief was granted political asylum in the UK in February 2013 after fleeing what he alleged to be politically-motivated fraud and embezzlement charges. Mr. Borodin would go on to be tried and convicted in abstentia in Russian Court in 2018, but not before managing to enlist a number of prominent American lawmakers to lobby Washington for a U.S. visa. Despite Russian extradition requests to the UK government, Borodin’s controversial attempts to make large donations to the NHS, and the uncovering of an assassination plot against his life, the fugitive banker remains overseas, having been granted access to his Swiss bank accounts and having made several notable London real estate purchases during his time in exile.

Mr. Borodin is widely listed as a billionaire, but his total wealth remains difficult to confirm accurately, with the governments of Switzerland and the Bahamas having been asked to help the Russian government in its legal case. In 2012, Borodin purchased the UK’s then-most expensive home, an 80-hectare 18th-century estate in Oxfordshire, for upwards of $217 million. In 2017 he was granted access to personal Swiss accounts holding a reported $378 million. The Amaryllis was purchased for a reported $120 million.

Mr. Borodin did not immediately respond to an emailed query from CorpGov , while the FBI declined to comment. An emailed query to The Department of Homeland Security was not returned.
