Sail Puerto Rico & Spanish Virgin Islands

  • Location Guide

Sailing the Island of Enchantment, and Much More Besides

Puerto Rico is an understated destination, not just for what it has but for what it puts you in reach of: magical places inviting you to explore by sailboat, A yacht charter in Puerto Rico usually includes the archipelago known as the Spanish Virgin islands, the region's main sailing destination.

As an unincorporated territory of the United States, Puerto Rico is easy to access and get around. The currency is the US dollar and English is widely used along with Spanish. Puerto Rico and the islands to its east enjoy a Caribbean climate and are very welcoming of visitors. A number of operators supply bareboat and crewed charters from marinas at the eastern end of Puerto Rico island, about a one-hour drive from San Juan International Airport.

Fun and Adventure on a Puerto Rico Sailing Vacation

Easily accessible from the USA and with the full range of expected Caribbean attractions, Puerto Rico is another fine charter destination.

Your trip to Puerto Rico for a sailboat holiday may start in the capital city San Juan for some cultural experience and historical context. But as the sailing focus is squarely on the archipelago traditionally known as the Spanish Virgin Islands, your travels may well take you straight to Puerto Del Rey Marina adjacent to the town of Fajardo and Puerto Del Rey marina, one of the Caribbean's largest boat harbors.

From Fajardo  the waters of the Caribbean open up, and a short sail east brings you to the first of a string of islands that stretch all the way to South America.

Visit the Spanish Virgin Islands

Your Puerto Rico charter boat vacation will likely concentrate around the Spanish Virgin Islands, all part of the US-administered territory. The largest island is Vieques, a short sail from the mainland where you may like to spend your first (or last) night aboard. A series of fine anchorages dot the southern side of the island, one of the most popular being Ensenada Honda at the eastern end. .

Anchor in the azure waters off a white sandy Vieques beach, and your presence in the Caribbean strikes home. The island is a wonderful setting, with a scattering of barrios and a large wildlife refuge where the US Navy's bomb testing range is consigned firmly to history. Mosquito Bay is a special place, the brightest bio-luminescent bay in the world where the conditions are just right for the trapped organisms to shine.

Enjoy the Caribbean's natural island beauty

Sailing northward a short distance brings you to the group of islands centered on Culebra. There are numerous places to explore around here, both in the water and out. Nature is at its finest in this relatively undeveloped place, and the waters teem with marine life. Of the world's seven turtle species, three make the Virgin islands home.

Among the most popular spots for a charter stopover in this corner of the Spanish Virgin Islands are Culebrita, Cayo Luis Pena and the fine anchorage at the town of Culebra itself. This is the place to indulge in some local shopping and take the opportunity to re-provision.

From Culabrita it should only take three to four hours to get back to base at Fajardo. But to extend your stay among the islands, spend a final night at Isla Palaminos. The island is highly developed with resorts, and day-trippers visit by ferry. But there's still a nice peaceful bay or two where you can tuck in for the night and watch the sun set, before returning to the marina for your 10.00am disembarkation. Perhaps to see more of what Puerto Rico has to offer.

Itinerary Puerto Rico

sailboat charters puerto rico

After awaking and having a nice breakfast, you may want to take one last snorkel on Pyramid Reef before heading off due east to Culebra and Cayo Luis Peña. The sail is about 13 NM and you’ll find your anchorage/moorings on the southwest side of the Island. This anchorage is a sea turtle sanctuary, and features a great snorkeling reef and white sand beach. It’s perfectly fine to stay overnight here, but you may want to continue a couple of miles eastward to Playa Melones on Culebra. Here you’ll find some moorings right off a nice beach with great snorkeling. The advantage of Melones is that you are only a short dinghy ride from the town of Dewey, the capitol of Culebra, where the ferries arrive. Dewey features many small shops and some very interesting restaurants and cafés. Make dinner plans for the Island’s favorite spot, Mamacita’s. This quaint island spot can be reached by dinghy, midway up the channel that cuts through the island. Mamacita’s also offers a live music on the weekends, and impromptu gatherings of local musicians can happen any day of the week.

On day three, set your course to sail on the south side of Culebra, stopping for a snorkel in Carlos Rosario, Tamarindo or Melones. Here you’ll find plenty of free moorings and excellent snorkeling. Afterwards, sail eastwards to Bahia Tortuga on Culebrita Island, acclaimed as one of the top ten Caribbean beaches, not bad considering how many beaches there are in the Caribbean! You’ll want to spend some time here exploring the island. In addition to the picture perfect gin clear water and white sand beach, Culebrita features a historic lighthouse, which you can hike up to. In addition, don’t miss the Jacuzzis or “pozitas” as named in Spanish, natural tide pools along the north side of the island.

After time in Culebrita, take a nice downwind sail to the southern channel to Ensenada Honda, Dulebra’s main harbor. After setting anchor just behind Cayo Pirata, you can dinghy ashore and tie up at the Dinghy Dock Restaurant. Enjoy a late breakfast or early lunch while taking in the view of Ensenada Honda. The Dinghy Dock is a great spot to leave your tender while exploring the rustic town of Dewey. You can do some shopping and replenish provisions or you can even rent a scooter or jeep and explore the Island. You can opt to stay put here for the evening and have dinner at Sally’s, another nice spot, or sail down the bay of Ensenada Honda to the anchorage of Dakiti. Dakiti features many moorings in a calm reef-bound harbor. Just around the bend from the anchorage of Dakiti is Bahia Fulladoza, where you’ll find Club Seaborne, a boutique hotel with one of the finest restaurants on the island, and the Bahia Bay Resort, perfect for drinks and an amazing view. Another great mooring option for the night is Bahia Aldomovar, just outside and to the east of Ensenada Honda. Bahia Aldomovar is a calm mangrove harbor with a coral reef barrier and faces east towards St. Thomas.

On day five you’ll set sail southbound towards the island of Vieques. Enjoy a nice beam reach as you sail towards to the eastern tip of the Island. After rounding the eastern tip , you’ll sail along downwind to Bahia de la Chiva. This remote anchorage spot is unique in its exclusivity as it’s relatively inaccessible without a boat. You’ll enjoy the beauty and tranquility of Bahia Chiva, which features a large horseshoe shaped harbor with an island, Isla Chiva, in the middle of the bay. There’s a long white sand beach to explore and two great snorkeling spots: “Blue Tang” reef and Isla Chiva.

After breakfast and possibly a morning snorkel or hike, cast the mooring line loose and sail leisurely down the undeveloped south coast of Vieques to Sun Bay. Cruise in and find an anchorage on the eastern side of the bay and enjoy some nice snorkeling or a long walk on the beach. Sun Bay is just around the bend from Puerto Real, where the lively town of Esperanza is. Esperanza features its “Malecón” or in English, “waterfront walk”. Here you’ll find quaint little shops and several nice dining establishments along the strip. Lazy Jacks is fun for drinks and bar food. Duffy’s is great for lunch or dinner but if you want a real gastronomic treat, try Bili or El Quenepo, all located along the Malecón strip.

On day seven you’ll continue sailing eastward to Punta Arenas, located on the western coast of Vieques. Here you’ll find lots of coastline where you can drop anchor. In the northwest tip and running down the southwest side of Vieques, you find Green Beach, a beautiful great snorkel location with many turtles. Punta Arenas is a great place to watch the sun set over the Caribbean horizon and if you choose to stay here overnight, it’s only a 2.5 hr. sail back to the SailCaribe base at Marina Puerto del Rey. You can opt to sail back up the east coast of Puerto Rico to Cayo Icacos, just east of the northeastern tip of Puerto Rico. Cayo Icacos has a spectacular white sand beach island with a couple of great snorkeling spots and is only 5NM away from the SailCaribe base. Once back at the base, after re-fueling and de-briefing, you’ll be free to go and explore the multitude of treasures that the big island of Puerto Rico has to offer.

sailboat charters puerto rico

Arrive at Marina Puerto del Rey at 9:30a.m. to board the vessel by 10:00a.m. After accommodating personal belongings and provisions, you’ll begin the technical and chart briefings. This takes about 2-3 hours and once completed you’ll be ready to set sail. You’ll sail about 4 nautical miles to the northeast from Marina Puerto del Rey to Isla Palomino. Here you’ll find a nice harbor with plenty of free moorings maintained by the Department of Natural Resources of Puerto Rico. In the middle of the mooring field is Pyramid Reef, which is at swimming distance from the boat and features a variety of marine life. Other options while moored-off Isla Palomino are visiting the island restaurant and Tiki Bar operated by El Conquistador Resort. You may also like to take a dinghy ride to Cayo Palominito, which looks like a postcard perfect island oasis with its clear turqious waters and white sparkling sand.

THESE TERMS ALSO CONTAIN A LEGALLY BINDING RELEASE, WAIVER OF LIABILITY, AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK. By creating a username, a login, clicking submit, using the services of Charter Experts, LLC d/b/a Virgin Island Sailing® (“ Broker ) or by accessing Broker’s website, you agree that you have read, and acknowledge your acceptance of these Terms. The Terms are subject to change at any time without notice at Broker’s sole discretion. Additionally, any transaction for which you have made payment shall be governed by the form of Terms in effect at the time of such payment notwithstanding any subsequent changes hereto.

If you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring a Charter (as that term is defined in Section 1 below) for more than just yourself, all references below to “Charterer” or “you” (and derivations thereof) shall be read to mean you on behalf of yourself and each individual within your group for whom you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring Charter.

These Terms shall be read together and construed, to the fullest extent possible, to be in concert with any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer. To the extent they cannot be so construed, then in the event of any direct conflict between these Terms and any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer (including but not limited to the agreement executed by Charterer for a Charter Reservation (as that term is defined in Section 1 below), these Terms shall prevail.

  • Prepaid Charter Reservations . Typically, Broker negotiates charter rates in advance with the yacht owner or charter company (“ Charter Provider ”) to obtain cost-effective rates, and facilitate reservations and availability for yacht charters, excursions and travel (the “ Charter ”). Broker also provides services to you by facilitating the booking of reservations for consideration and receives a commission from the Charter Provider (the “ Broker Fee ”). The Broker Fee is included in the pre-negotiated Charter rate provided to you, plus taxes and other fees where applicable. You agree that your payment is for the total amount set forth in the applicable Charter agreement (which Charter Provider may refer to as a Charter Contract, Charter Agreement, Booking Terms & Conditions, Instructions and Terms for Accommodations, as well as other derivations) provided to you by Broker (“ Charter Agreement ”). Upon execution of the Charter Agreement and receipt of the applicable deposit, you will have made a reservation for the Charter that authorizes Broker to facilitate the Charter on your behalf (“Charter Reservation”), including making payment arrangements with the Charter Provider. You further agree that Broker is a third-party beneficiary to the Charter Agreement and shall have the right to enforce such agreement to the extent it deems such enforcement necessary or advisable to protect its rights hereunder or under the Charter Agreement.

Broker retains the Broker Fee as compensation in arranging your Charter Reservation. The Broker Fee varies based on the amount and type of Charter and/or services provided by Broker.  By making a Charter Reservation, you accept and agree to the relevant cancellation and no-show policy of the Charter Provider set forth in the Charter Agreement. Cancellation and no-show policies vary for each Charter. Carefully read the Charter Agreement and additional information provided to you by Broker. It is expressly agreed by Charterer that the Broker Fee is earned at the time the Charter Reservation is made. Late payment, wrong credit card or debit card details, invalid credit or debit cards, or insufficient funds are for your own risk and account, and you will not be entitled to any refund of any prepaid amount unless the Charter Provider expressly agrees otherwise under the Charter Agreement or in some other signed writing.

  • Charter Rules and Restrictions . Additional terms and agreements will apply to your Charter Reservation and any purchase or rental of equipment or other items, supplies, provisions and travel you may select. Please read those additional terms carefully. In particular, if you have purchased airfare, please ensure that you read the full terms and conditions of carriage issued by the supplier. You agree to abide by the terms of purchase imposed by any supplier with whom you elect to deal, including but not limited to payment of all amounts when due and compliance with the supplier’s rules and restrictions regarding availability, charges, fares, and use of products and services.
  • Payment . All payments must be made by personal check, bank/wire transfer, ACH payment and/or with a major credit card unless otherwise expressly stated. The total price for the Charter Reservation will be billed in U.S. Dollars unless otherwise stated. Some banks and credit card companies impose fees for international transactions. If you are making a reservation from outside of the United States on a US credit card, your bank may convert the payment amount to your local currency and charge you a conversion fee. This means the amount listed on your credit or bank card statement may be in your local currency and therefore a different figure than the amount provided by Broker for the Charter Reservation. In addition, a foreign transaction fee may be assessed if the financial institution that issued your credit card is located outside of the United States. Booking international travel may be considered to be an international transaction by the financial institution or card company. The currency exchange rate and foreign transaction fee is determined solely by your financial institution on the day that it processes the transaction. If you have any questions about these fees or the exchange rate applied to your booking, please contact your financial institution. Broker shall not be liable to you for any such service, conversion, or exchange fee.

Broker expressly reserves the right to cancel your Charter Reservation if full payment is not timely received as set forth in the Charter Agreement.

  • Cancellation and Rescheduling . You may cancel or change your Charter Reservation as set forth in the Charter Agreement by and among you, the Charter Provider and/or Broker. Please note that some Charter Providers do not permit changes to or cancellation of reservations after they are made, or after a certain date, as indicated in the Charter Agreement. You agree to abide by the terms of the Charter Agreement with respect to your Charter Reservation. Broker will not be responsible for reimbursing Charterer for any previously tendered deposits or payments by Charterer and disclaims all liability for the failure of a Charter Provider to refund or return any such funds.
  • Credit Card Transactions and Chargebacks . If for any reason, any Charter Provider is unable to provide the Charter, or any part thereof, for which you have contracted, your remedy lies against the Charter Provider, and not against Broker. However, Broker will use reasonable efforts to assist you and Charter Provider in reaching a resolution to a dispute between you and the Charter Provider. In the event that your payment has already been transferred from Broker to Charter Provider or to an escrow account, you agree that you will not seek a chargeback against Broker for such amounts transferred. You further agree to indemnify and hold Broker harmless from and against any liability, loss, damage or expense (including without limitation, reasonable attorneys’ fees) that Broker may incur in connection with chargebacks against Broker or under the Charter Agreement and your performance thereunder. If Broker incurs any costs, including but not limited to attorneys’ fees, to recover any payments charged back by your credit card company or other financial institution, you agree that you will be liable for these costs. If your payment is declined for any reason, you agree to settle any amounts owed to Broker via money order, cashier’s check, personal check or bank/ACH transfer immediately.
  • Broker Responsibility . Broker makes arrangements with the Charter Provider. Broker additionally makes additional arrangements with other suppliers for the various components and other services that comprise your Charter (“Charter Suppliers”). Broker is not an agent of these Charter Providers or the Charter Suppliers (and the Charter Providers and Charter Suppliers are not agents of Broker). Broker expressly disclaims any liability for the actions or omissions of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. The Charter Providers and the Charter Suppliers reserve the right to refuse service to you at their sole discretion. Broker assumes no liability for the acts of the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers in refusing service. Broker is not responsible for schedule changes and does not offer compensation for those changes. Broker is not responsible under any circumstances for any injury or damages you may suffer, in connection with sea, air or ground transportation, hotel accommodations, or other travel or excursion services arranged by Broker.

You understand Broker is not the source or supplier of the Charter or other travel services you requested and acts solely as a broker for the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. Start your charter from Fajardo, Puerto Rico and you are perfectly positioned to explore the wonderful Spanish Virgin Islands. From the deserted beach-front relaxation of Isla Culebra to the bizarre beauty of Bahia Mosquito, a trip to this intriguing region of the world guarantees peaceful anchorages, beautiful beaches, and captivating snorkeling galore.

  • Sailing conditions
  • Getting there

Warm and tropical year-round, Puerto Rico hosts a typical island climate that sees a moderate annual average temperature of 27°C, although the central mountainous interior is always a few degrees cooler than the coastal regions. Easterly trade winds are present throughout the year, providing cooling respite from long, sun-filled days.

Winter and summer in Puerto Rico experience little variation with generally only a swing of around 4 °C between the two seasons which is triggered by the warm waters of the Atlantic that lap the island’s shores. The rainy season makes an appearance from April to November and the hurricane season runs between June and November but plenty of warning is always given.

There are regular scheduled flights from the Puerto Rico via most major US cities. Direct flights are available from: Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Hartford, Los Angeles, Miami, Newark, New York (JFK), Orlando, Philadelphia, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, and Washington (Dulles).

Day 1: Fajardo Begin your Puerto Rico adventure from the small but popular boating centre of Fajardo in the country’s east.

Day 2: La Cordillera La Cordillera is a 12 mile stretch of tiny islands and reefs which form part of Puerto Rico’s East Coast Marine Reserve. Lovely anchorages are scattered throughout and the snorkelling and diving is a must-do.

Day 3: Isla de Culebra Head ashore here for a glimpse into a real Caribbean shanty town enriched with Spanish culture.

Day 4: Dakity Harbour Sail along the west coast of Isla Culebra and stop at Playa Carlos Rosario where the snorkelling is first-class. Continuing further up the west coast will carry you past mountains and deserted sandy beaches before reaching Peninsula Flamenco and the spectacular beaches of Playa Flamenco, Brava, and Resaca where a snack and a swim is in order.

Day 5: Isla de Culebrita Cross the Cross the Canal de Cayo Norte today and head to the deserted Isla de Culebrita, part of the Culebra National Wildlife Refuge. This part of the world remains virtually unchanged in the last 500 years and boasts an abandoned lighthouse, soft beaches, reefs, and tide pools that make for picturesque exploration. You may glimpse nesting sea turtles and shore birds along the coastline.

Day 6: Isla de Vieques Only recently opened to tourism, much of Vieques is a wildlife sanctuary. Stop at Isabel Segundo or Esperanza for quaint, little shops and delicious, local cuisine.

Day 7: Ensenada Honda The harbour of Ensenada Honda has a pirate-filled history that you won’t want to miss. At the mouth of the Mahia Mosquito is a quiet mangrove bay perfect for kayaking. At night you can see the largest concentration of phosphorescent dynoflagellates in the world light up. Take a swim and experience what has been described as “bathing in the stars” or simply watch as neon fish dart beneath your boat.

Day 8: Fajardo Time to head back home.

8 Day Itinerary (2)

Day 1: Join your yacht at Puerto day Rey Marina, Fajardo

Day 2: Fajardo to Palominos Island On Plaominos Island you can be as sedentary or active as you want. Go snorkelling, jet skiing, horseback riding, play beach volleyball, or bring your camera to capture the wildlife.

Day 3: Palominos to Bahia Sardinas in Culebra Visit the outstanding Flameco Beach in Culebra. Reefs flank the beach, the water is shallow, clear, and calm, and a few U.S. Army tanks from WWII remain stranded on the beach.

Day 4: Bahia Sardinas to Dakity Dakity’s beach in not sandy, so you may want to just sunbath on your boat or go fishing. The water is beautiful and clear.

Day 5: Dakity to Las Pelas Las Pelas is a small bay, popular with boaters located on Culebra.

Day 6: Las Pelas to Isabel Segunda on Vieques Isabel Segunda is the capital of Vieques and is home to a restored fort from the 1840s. There a little shops and restaurants. If you like your vacations to feel off-the-beaten path, you will love this stop.

Day 7: Isabel Segunda to Punta Arenas The beach at Punta Arenas is a National Wildlife Refuge. This is a family friendly beach and fun to snorkel off of.

Day 8: Punta Arenas to Punta del Rey to disembark

Frequently asked questions

Where are you located.

We are a convenient 5-10 minute drive from the major hotels in the San Juan, Condado and Isla Verde area in Puerto Rico. We are located in San Juan Bay Marina at Slip A72. If you are taking a cab, ask your driver to take you to San Juan Bay Marina and reference where the Sizzler Restaurant is at. Once at the Marina, walk through the boatyard towards the lower part of Sizzler Restaurant. Once at sea level, go past a Jetski rental kiosk towards the long dock with boats on either side. Our slip is on the left past the white gate that leads to the dock. Slip numbers are marked on the floor.

How do I book a sail?

You may book online here, or by clicking any of the “book now” buttons. We ask that you call, text, or email us for same-day bookings to ensure availability even if the calendar doesn’t show it. Online bookings are handled through a secure and encrypted provider accepting most major credit cards.

How should I dress?

For daysails we recommend cool, light clothing, hat, sunglasses and sunblock. While San Juan Bay has very calm waters and you will usually not get wet, there is always the possibility of some small splashes of water. Sunset sails have usually calmer breeze and cooler temperatures so you may dress more comfortably, however we do recommend light clothing. If you choose to go out into the ocean, the possibilities of getting wet are more likely as we will be sailing in bigger seas. No shoes allowed on-board.

At what time should I arrive for my sail?

We ask that you arrive at least 15 minutes before your sail for a proper safety briefing and preparations. Sails depart sharp on time. Plan to be on time as in consideration to others that may be present we can not delay departure time. Failure to be on time for departure will result in forfeiting full fare or a $50 rebooking fee.

How many passengers are allowed on a boat?

We can accommodate 2-6 passengers for a personal, intimate experience. If you wish your sail to be private you may opt for the Private Charter or reserve the boat for your group. If you are sailing alone we ask that you contact us so we may schedule you with a current group.

Do I have to aid in handling the boat?

Your crew will take care of all the boat handling maneuvers so you may sit back and relax, but you are welcome to take part if you want a more hands-on experience.

Will I get seasick?

As we usually sail in very calm waters, the possibilities of getting seasick are almost zero. However, if you have gotten motion sickness at other times, we do recommend taking some remedies beforehand.

What drinks are included?

We offer complimentary soda, water, local beer, rum & coke and special rum punch for adults over 18 years of age. Sunset sails also include Spanish Cava or Prosecco.

Are there age restrictions to sail?

We welcome everyone to enjoy the wonderful experience of sailing! However, US Coast Guard requires children under 13 to wear a lifejacket at all times. There is also certain level of physical exertion that may take place to board and move around so we advise caution for the elderly and persons with mobility issues and serious medical conditions.

Can I bring my own music?

Of course! We encourage you to do so. Our speaker is bluetooth ready so you may connect your own device and use your personal playlist. We use Spotify and Pandora and may look up your favorite station.

Are the booking times shown here the only ones available for a sail?

While the times shown are our standard offerings we are always available for special requests. Give us a call or email us to make special arrangements

What If I have to cancel my reservations?

We have a 48 hour cancellation notice policy for full refund. 48 hours or less cancellations forfeit 50% fare. 24 hour cancellations forfeit full fare. No shows, late to departure time or same-day booking cancellations will forfeit 100% fare.

What happens if my sail is cancelled due to weather?

We want you to enjoy a great experience while sailing with us so we would reschedule your sail for another day when the weather is ideal. If this would not be possible due to your travel plans, we would offer a full refund. The decision to cancel due to weather rests solely on the Captain. Tropical weather can change quite rapidly so some decisions to cancel might be last minute, however we always take into consideration your time and alternate plans so we try to always cancel at least an hour in advance from our scheduled departure time.

Anything else I should know?

Just be ready for a great sailing experience! If you do have any additional questions, please feel free to call, text or email us and we will gladly clear up any doubts.

Sailing in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is an archipelago part of the Greater Antilles in the Caribbean Region. Located between the east of the Dominican Republic and the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico boasts over 300 miles of the coastline. Northern and eastern shores of the island face the Atlantic Ocean, while the southern and western part face the Caribbean Sea. Puerto Rico’s mainland is roughly 35 miles from north to south and 100 miles wide from west to east, making its area about 3,500 square miles. Starting yacht charter in Puerto Rico you will be in close proximity to the nearby Virgin Islands with number of safe anchorages, beautiful beaches, and perfect snorkeling spots.

Although Puerto Rico is a part of the U.S. yacht charter here will give you completely new experience, as if you start your sailing vacation in some remote exotic country. Major yacht charter base is located in the southeast part of the island and is ideal starting point from which you may reach the most picturesque parts of the island.

San Juan is the capital and the most populated city. Renting a boat in Puerto Rico you may first sail to San Juan and explore main waters of San Juan Bay with two natural lagoons, the Condado and San José. San Juan was founded in 1521 by Spanish colonists who named it Ciudad de Puerto Rico or "Rich Port City". In our days San Juan apart of being capital is the most important seaport of the country with number of manufacturing sites and financial institutions.

Yacht charter and more

Apart of great sailing experience, boat rental in Puerto Rico can give you a chance learn more about this country and its unique culture a blend of African and Spanish cultures. This fusion extends to almost every aspect of Puerto Rican life. Yes, there’s a definite Caribbean flavour that you smell when sailing to The Island of Enchantment with its festivals, outdoor markets, bright nightlife and unique cuisine.

Different examples of Puerto Rican arts and crafts reflect the diversity of its cultural heritage. Numerous museums around the island shows Puerto Rico’s vast variety of identities expressed in very artistic ways. You will fell and see this diversity almost everywhere you go, in music, architecture and cuisine.

Local museums represent both European classics and Afro-Caribbean sculptures, while architecture is a mixture of colonial styles with a bright palette of colours.

Puerto Rican music brings together a whole bunch of instruments, rhythms and sounds from different times and countries. So, during your sailing vacation in Puerto Rico you will definitely learn something new about local culture and it will be an exciting experience.

Local cuisine

During yacht charter in Puerto Rico, you definitely must try local cuisine which is presented by the unique tasty blend somewhat similar to Spanish, Cuban and Mexican cuisine with Taíno, and American influences. No matter where you dine, make sure you get a taste of some of Puerto Rico's most authentic foods:

  • Asopao. It’s a traditional stew made with chicken or beef;
  • Mofongo. A course consisting of seafood, meat or vegetables atop mashed plantains;
  • Lechón: smokey, roasted pork.

It may be surprising, but not every sailor knows that Puerto Rico is the rum capital of the world. By the way, rum was actually invented here, in Puerto Rico. It was in the 1500s that the first production of rum began and ever since Puerto Rico has been the leader in rum production.

Sailing conditions

Renting a boat in Puerto Rico you may discover a number of different sailing itineraries ideal for experienced and novice skippers. Experienced sailors may wish to take a bareboat charter, while others may enjoy sailing on crewed yacht or catamaran.

Warm and tropical weather all the year round, calm waters, and beautiful islands to visit make the Caribbean one of the world's top sailing destinations. As an island in the Caribbean Sea, Puerto Rico benefits from these conditions. Sailors looking to spend their time at sea during their Puerto Rican vacation have plenty of options.

Besides, if you love snorkelling you are more than welcome to enjoy crystal clear Caribbean waters and visit beautiful and deserted cays off the east coast of Puerto Rico including Icacos, Palominitos, Culebra, Culebrita, Vieques and St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

The climate of Puerto Rico is primarily classified as tropical rain forest. Puerto Rico’s varied topography means that parts of the island experience desert-like weather conditions, while others are considered rain forests.

Temperatures all year round are warm to hot, averaging near 85 °F in lower elevations. A relatively cool season lasts from December to March. But in fact, Puerto Rico is a great place to sail to any time of the year, except the official hurricane season (June to December).

If you sail in Puerto Rico during the summer, you may prefer the south coast, which is less rainy. High season is usually mid-December to mid-April, as well as July.

The city of San Juan is the perfect place to experience true Puerto Rican culture. Architecture is very diverse here, due to  different cultural influences. The oldest part of the city is Old San Juan with its vibrant neighborhood consisting mostly of lovingly restored Spanish colonial buildings dated back to the XIV century. Apart of he island’s major cities Puerto Rico can also offer beautiful islands Culebra, Vieques and Ponce that are only few hours sailing from the main base.

How long do we stay in the beach?

There are two really good spots we visit, Palomino Island and Icacos. The decision of what island we'll visit will be made that same day of your private yacht tour. Can we celebrate a special occasion on the boat?

Yes indeed,  bring on your birthday, anniversaries, romantic getaways with us. We will make it memorable with the Caribbean landscape as our ally. Decorations are not encouraged because of windy conditions, we don't want anything to end up in the ocean and affect sea turtles or any wildlife.

You can begin your sailing journey right from Port of Fajardo, which is an hour from the nation's capital, San Juan.

  • Cayo Luis Peña and Culebra- located 13 nautical miles from Fajardo. These small islands used to serve as a refuge for pirates more than three centuries ago and nowadays are a sea turtle sanctuary. Snorkelers love this area for its spectacular views of the reef. At night, the bioluminescent bay of Vieques is a must-see! It is caused by a microorganism that glows with the movement of the water, illuminating the water in a neon blue color, spectacular!
  • Icacos Key- Right off the north coast of Puerto Rico. A gorgeous island that is part of the Cayos de la Cordillera Natural Reserve. Here you’ll find white sand beaches and perfect snorkeling conditions. From here, sail back just a short 5 miles back to Puerto Rico.

Excellent experience, we had catamaran to ourselves. Carlos and Ezekiel were great. We got vegetarian food - which is what we requested. And they even made Mohitos. We would very highly recommend them any day.

katarina-sail-charters.jpeg

We had a great time on the Sea Reina private charter! Our family of four adults and two kids-the boat was super spacious. Captain Scott brought us to 2 killer snorkeling areas, and then showed us all the surf breaks on the north shore of Rincon. His wife even made us lunch, which was an extra bonus.🤙 highly recommend this charter!

We had an amazing time sailing around the coast and watching the sunset. Capt. Brian and Shane were a fantastic crew. The drinks were fabulous. DJ Brian brought his A Game with the playlist and whale facts. Shane’s snacks and service were top notch. The views were amazing. We can’t wait to come back next year and do it again! Thanks for a fabulous night!

Incredible experience! The crew is great and the food is fantastic. Charted complete catamaran for my daughter’s 16th birthday. She and her guests loved it. Rincón’s coast and beaches are beautiful. Geraldine was so helpful with the details and her crew is outstanding. 100% recommended.

This is not the place to order a la carte as the menu is more like a tasting menu creating individual dishes to try. You surely like surprises if you decide to eat here.

Explore historical Puerto Rico

The history of Puerto Rico starts around 430 BC, but takes a dramatic turn with the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1493 on the island. Diseases that were previously unknown spread like wildfire among the indigenous population - amongst the exploitation by the Spanish and the involvement in war, it led to many deaths on the island. Due to its geopolitically strategic position, it became a playground for various European powers until 1898 - the year it fell into the hands of the United States. The country is still under US control until today.

Parque Ceremonial Indígena de Caguana is a park where many remnants of the indigenous population have been found. Stones with interesting paintings can be admired here. The plazas that have been discovered here, are known to have been used for all kinds of ceremonies. Similar sites can be found in Centro Ceremonial Indígena de Tibes .

Castillo San Felipe del Morro , a UNESCO world heritage site, was built in the 16th to protect the island from invaders - after the Spanish had conquered the island. You should visit the fort to learn more about its history AND to enjoy the most stunning view over the ocean as well as the island.

Discover mystical Puerto Rico

Every country, tribe or people have their own explanations on how the world was once created. The story of the indigenous people of Puerto Rico, the Taino, revolves around Atabei who was said to be mother earth who had two sons. One of her sons, Yucajú, turned this earth into a more beautiful place than the one his mother created. He is also said to have created the sun and the moon. He even created his own son, a cross between g’d and animal - Locuo. His brother became increasingly jealous and tried to destroy everything Yucajú had created. Lucky for him he had his son Locuo, who created the first woman and the first man. The Taino believed that they all descended from these first people on Earth. Isn’t it interesting that the same stories were told in different ways in other parts of the world as well? People are often much more alike than they think they are.

Sailing conditions in Puerto Rico

The tropical climate in Puerto Rico ensures that it stays warm all year round. An average temperature of 26 degrees is dominating the island. But beware: Hurricane season in late summer is probably not the best time to go out on a sailing adventure. We would recommend you to rent a boat in Puerto Rico between January and April. The temperatures are ideal and it stays dry. If you want to visit the island between May and October, you should expect a little bit more rain.

Puerto Rico is the perfect spot for a yacht rental in the Caribbean . You will find perfect wind conditions that allow for an unforgettable sailing adventure without dangerously rough seas. However, if you prefer to have a bit more of an adventure, you might consider sailing out into the open ocean - we would only recommend this option with a promising weather forecast and to experienced sailors. You might want to consider a boat rental with a skipper who knows the waters in this part of the Caribbean very well.

How much does it cost to rent a boat in Puerto Rico?

How much it costs to rent a boat in Puerto Rico depends on many factors like the season, the boat type, the size of the boat and how many people will join you on the boat rental. A bareboat charter will mostly be used for anyone travelling on a boat.

Renting a boat in Puerto Rico is not the cheapest kind of holiday, you will pay 321 EUR on average per person per day for a motorboat.

What type of boat is best for sailing in Puerto Rico?

What kind of boat you should rent for a sailing holiday in Puerto Rico totally depends on the type of boat vacation you would like to experience. If you aim to see all the wonderful remote beaches Puerto Rico has to offer, you would go for a different type of water vehicle than when you want the wind on your skin to make you feel completely free.

Rent a catamaran in Puerto Rico

Pros of renting a catamaran in Puerto Rico

One of the advantages of renting a catamaran in Puerto Rico is the fact that the shallow draft allows you to sail closer to the shore. This makes this type of boat the perfect yacht to discover hidden beaches and to anchor closer to the shore without any worries about hitting something that is hidden underwater. Especially the islands of Vieques and Culebra to the east of Puerto Rico are popular sailing destinations in this part of the Caribbean due to its untouched and incredibly beautiful sandy beaches.

Catamarans are also more stable than other types of boats - a great advantage for anyone who tends to get seasick easily. Standing on two hulls makes it the perfect boat rental for a family vacation.

Equipped with both an engine and a sail, you are well prepared for your sailing vacation in Puerto Rico. Use the sail to make the most of the winds, but use the engine when the wind stops blowing so that you don’t get stuck anywhere in the middle of the ocean.

One of the most popular catamarans to rent in Puerto Rico is the brand new Catamaran Lagoon 42 . Up to six people can sleep on the boat. For some extra fun, rent a SUP or a kayak in addition to the bareboat charter.

Cons of renting a catamaran in Puerto Rico

One of the downsides of renting a catamaran is its size. In high season it might become difficult to find a spot for mooring in the marinas. Rather than trying to find a spot in a marina to spend the night, you should try and find a quiet bay where you can anchor for the night and wake up to a beautiful sunset. This beats any spot in any harbour!

Rent a sailboat in Puerto Rico

Pros of renting a sailboat in Puerto Rico

With ideal wind conditions, renting a boat in Puerto Rico is the perfect choice for anyone who loves sailing over turquoise waters along the most stunning coastlines. While you get to enjoy some beautiful views in the Caribbean, the sailing experience is the most important factor in choosing a sailboat rental in Puerto Rico. Ideal wind conditions make it the perfect water vehicle in this part of the world.

Sail to the nearby islands of Vieques and Culebra or even further to the British Virgin islands . Feel the breeze on your face and anchor in some of the most beautiful remote beaches.

One of the most popular sailboats in Puerto Rico is Sailboat Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 440 , a 14 meter long boat that takes your breath away. Up to six people can sleep on the boat and you can rent the sailboat with or without a captain. If you don’t have a lot of experience sailing in the Caribbean, we would recommend you to hire a skipper or captain to navigate you through the sea.

Cons of renting a sailboat in Puerto Rico

Sailboats require more skills than driving a catamaran or motorboat. This might be one of the downsides if you lack the experience. However, practice makes perfect and with an experienced skipper by your side, you will become a professional in no time.

Another downside is the fact that sailboats are dependent on the wind. If the wind suddenly stops blowing, you might get stuck in the middle of the ocean without any option to move. This might be incredibly frustrating if you only booked your boat in Puerto Rico for a week.

Rent a motorboat in Puerto Rico

Pros of renting a motorboat in Puerto Rico

Renting a motorboat in Puerto Rico comes with many advantages. One of them is the speed. Motorboats are generally faster than other types of water vehicles, making them the perfect choice for anyone who wants to experience as much of Puerto Rico and the surrounding islands as possible.

Unlike sailboats, motorboats don’t have a keel. This makes them the perfect choice for anyone who wants to explore the hidden beaches and bays for a truly relaxed vacation. You can sail in shallow waters without worrying too much about hiding something underwater.

One of the most popular motorboats to rent in Puerto Rico is the Motorboat Hydra-Sports 3300 VX which includes a captain. Snorkeling equipment is already waiting for you on board for some extra fun on your sailing vacation in Puerto Rico. The 33 meter long yacht can host up to six guests, making it the perfect vehicle for an intimate vacation with your closest friends.

Cons of renting a motorboat in Puerto Rico

One of the downsides of renting a motorboat in Puerto Rico is the fact that their fuel is not the wind, but petrol. With the ever increasing prices, you might get a juicy bill for all the miles you sailed.

Unless you rent a luxurious motorboat, these types of boats are not necessarily known for their spacious cabins. You will definitely not spend your days hiding away under deck - you will definitely enjoy all the time you have on board with your friends sunbathing, snorkelling or swimming. After all, this is what a sailing vacation is all about, right?

Charter a luxury yacht in Puerto Rico

Charter a luxury yacht in Puerto Rico for a very special summer vacation. A luxury yacht offers all the amenities you could hope for while spending your holiday on a boat. Plenty of space, a sundeck to enjoy the sun and plenty of space to have dinner with all your friends who are joining you on this trip. One of our most popular private luxury yachts in Puerto Rico is Motorboat Princess V58 , a modern and speedy boat which includes the captain on your trip. Up to 12 guests can find space on this yacht, meaning that you can bring all your friends. Some of the amenities on board include a refrigerator, air conditioning, snorkelling equipment and loud speakers to get the party started. After all, what good is a boat party without the right music?

What kind of boat license do you need when renting a boat in Puerto Rico?

When sailing in Puerto Rico you don’t need a boat licence to operate a boat - unless you are a resident of the island state. For non-residents it is enough to present their ID and to ensure that they receive sufficient instructions on how to operate the boat that they are renting.

Sailing routes in Puerto Rico

One of the most scenic sailing routes around Puerto Rico is the one from Puerto del Rey on the east coast of the island back to La Chiva Beach . Start your journey in Puerto del Rey before heading out to Isla Palominos where you get to swim in turquoise waters and relax on a white sandy beach. Your next stop is Culebra, where you can sunbathe or go snorkeling. Flamenco Beach is popular with tourists. Snorkelling in the waters by Tamarindo Beach will be a once in a lifetime experience as you get to swim with all kinds of interesting wildlife, including rays and turtles. You will feel just like in Nemo . Your next destination is Bahia del Almodovar . Here you can safely moor on the mooring balls. Explore the stunning coastline before mooring for the night. In the morning head to Esperanza on the island of Vieques. The town is known for its stunning sea views and cute wooden houses. Your next stop is La Chiva Beach, also known as the Blue Beach where you get to relax with a stunning view of the sea. Next is Puntas Arenas, also known as the Green Beach due to its lush green surroundings. It is part of the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge .
