Richmond Yachts History

Don Davis contracted Sovereign Yachts of British Columbia to build Cloud Nine, a Ward Setzer-designed tri-deck that went into construction towards the end of 2001. As the promised launch date of mid 2003 came and went, it became obvious that the company was in over its head financially. By the end of 2003, Sovereign was on the verge of bankruptcy and it appeared that the yacht would never be built. Where others might have accepted the loss, Davis responded by buying the boatyard.

Having observed the assiduous labor of the artisans working on his vessel, Davis retained about 70 percent of Sovereign’s workforce and resumed construction of his craft. He invested in new woodworking equipment and fiberglass tooling for the shipyard, and in 2004 Davis changed the company’s name to Richmond Yachts and opened his doors for business. Davis’ completed yacht, now renamed Status Quo and boasting luxurious details, debuted at the 2004 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show to serve as an impressive introduction for the fledgling company.

From his personal experience with Sovereign and insight gleaned from studying other builders, Davis decided that custom-building yachts was too expensive and time-consuming for builders. Concluding that owners want the boating experience, not the construction process, Davis elected to concentrate on producing semi-custom fiberglass vessels built on spec. As Richmond’s vice president of operations, Keith Kiselback explains, “building for inventory allows us to build a better product with a more uniform result for less money.” By avoiding the frequent changes in design that often accompany custom designed vessels, Richmond Yachts is able to be more time-effective as well as more cost-effective, producing a finished boat in around a year.

Richmond Yacht’s six-acre yard in Richmond, B.C., contains a 70,000 square-foot state-of-the-art facility under cover and has the capacity to simultaneously build four composite yachts from 120-feet to 155-feet in length. Situated on the Fraser River in Vancouver, the yard has in excess of 500 feet of deepwater dockage, with a separate laminating facility containing all of the tooling as well as fiberglass operations. Having successfully built nine luxurious vessels to date, including Canada’s largest mega-yacht, Richmond Yachts is poised to have a very successful future!

Richmond Yachts Yachts for Sale

Formed by Texas businessman, Don Davis, out of the ashes of the former Sovereign Yachts yard in Richmond, British Columbia , Canada, a suburb of Vancouver. Sovereign, who had been building Davis’ 138’ Status Quo, went out of business at the end of 2003, Davis changed the company’s name to Richmond Yachts and began trading under that name in 2004.

After the launch of the 138’, a second vessel of 142’, which had previously been started at Sovereign, was launched in 2006 and was sold as “Sunchaser”.

The yard launched two additional 142’ Motoryachts one in 2007 (“Staus Qho”) and the other in 2008 (“Richmond Lady” before slowing down during the “Great Recession”. The yard increased the size to 150’, launching it’s final 150’, hull #7, “Status Quo”, after which the company closed it’s doors in the summer of 2015.

Richmond Yachts built high volume fiberglass yachts, with richly detailed traditional interiors. Based on the owner/user experience, the company built vessels on spec with some innovative and thoughtful features not found on competitor vessels of the era.

The yard consisted of 70,000 sq. ft sheds on 6 acres of land on the banks of the Fraser River.

CALLIOPE for sale

Built by Canadian shipyard Richmond Yachts to an all-American 'dream team' design, 43.3-metre (142') GRP-constructed Calliope was delivered in 2007. She has been well maintained since, with several notable refits and technical upgrades over the years. In 2019, she underwent a full hull repaint and later in 2022, she received a bulbous bow to improve her efficiency and fuel consumption.

  Calliope is a proven world cruiser with globetrotting capacity, having recently completed a three-year circumnavigation of the globe. She is ABS-classed, compliant under PYLC Marshall Islands for chartering up to 12 guests and has a successful charter reputation that would benefit her new owner. Charter-friendly amenities include a well-equipped sundeck with both shaded and sunning areas, plus a whirlpool and bar.

 Setzer Design Group is responsible for her exterior, while Pavlik Yacht Design has helmed her interior. Glossed wood and natural light feature throughout her neutral, yet elegant, interiors, with features including an American bar and multiple indoor lounge areas. 

With the interior volume of a 50-metre yacht, Calliope can accommodate up to 12 guests in a total of six cabins, including a bridge deck stateroom that can function for either guest use or captain use for maximum flexibility. There is a full-beam owner's suite, which is accessed via a private office and includes his and her en suites – a standout feature for a yacht of this size.

In pristine condition with large volume, cost-effective performance and terrific outdoor spaces, Calliope is one of the best-kept yachts of this age on the market.

The stately interior of this yacht features a well-balanced décor of rich woods and fine furnishings. A full-service station makes the entire deck into the perfect entertaining venue. There is a third deck with a more casual ambiance and the sundeck boasts plenty of chaise lounges, large sunpad, alfresco dining options, complete wet bar, TV and deluxe Spa Pool tub.

EXCELLENCE's stunning semi displacement hull has a beam of 8.5m (28ft) and a draft of just 2.1m (7ft), enabling her to venture to some shallower destinations. She is the ideal choice for large groups, families and events, thanks to her abundance of interior and exterior living options. She is crewed by a professional crew of 8.

Trina, In a word, the trip was INCREDIBLE! The yacht itself was fantastic. We went to the yacht show in Monaco and boarded probably a dozen boats the same length as Excellence bit none had the volume, layout or usability as ours. The top sun deck was the absolute best. No other yacht compared. And the crew was fantastic. They didn't know how to say no! Dusty was amenable to anything we wanted to do and the staff waited on us hand and foot. I didn't fix one drink all week. They unpacked our cases and packed them back when we departed. They stayed up literally all night when the party wouldn't stop! Samantha, chief steward, was the most accommodating person that has ever served me. I told her she always has a job working for me if she gets tired of the charter business! It is rare when a trip that is so hyped up and anticipated actual exceeds expectations, but this one did. Not a once in a lifetime trip for us. We are thinking about the next trip already!
