The best superyacht marinas in Miami

One island park.

In Miami, everyone wants a piece of the waterfront. Condos, restaurants and private homes all try to stake claim on the ever-disappearing property by bay (and sea). Luckily, in a water-centric city like Miami, marinas take up a good portion of this prime real estate .

With dockage available in every waterfront neighbourhood, you can decide what amenities you seek, how much privacy you desire and which part of Miami you’d like to be based to explore this exciting city .

1. One Island Park

The One Island Park compound opened in Miami Beach in November last year and is designed solely for superyachts and is able to accommodate yachts measuring up to 244 metres in its deep water berths.

Visitors to One Island Park will enjoy a vast range of VIP concierge services, as well as a high level of exclusivity. The new compound was designed to showcase both the area and the best standards of service, meaning it will become an extremely popular spot for private owners, while its location means that clients can enjoy the thriving art scene, the beaches and the nightlife of Miami.

Island Gardens

The new superyacht marina Island Gardens Deep Harbour is situated on Watson Island and is capable of berthing 50 superyachts measuring up to 167 metres. The retail and residential aspects of the marina are not expected to be completed for the next two years, but the marina is fully operational with 1,524 linear metres of capacity with drafts of 5.4-6.4 metres deep.

Coconut Grove

Home to the U.S. Sailing Center and multiple yacht clubs, Coconut Grove is a hotbed for yachting activity. The 582-slip Dinner Key Marina, which survived the worst of the hurricane damage in September, sits right in the centre, and only steps away from the shops and restaurants of “The Grove.” The protected marina hosts yachts up to 38 metres with two metres of draft.

Sea Isle Marina

The Sea Isle Marina and Yachting Centre is a great place for yachts up to 42 metres to tie-up and be in close distance to what downtown has to offer with the Adrienne Arsht Center for the performing arts and the arena where the Miami Heat play right around the corner. There are also great restaurants right on site, as well as fuel and a ship’s store.

Miamarina at Bayside

Surrounded by shops, dining and even an outdoor auditorium, the Miamarina at Bayside is a lively marina. The marina has 130 slips and hosts yachts up to 60 metres and offers easy access to both the Atlantic through Government Cut and to Biscayne Bay and the Florida Keys to the south.

Epic Marina

Epic Marina is surely one of the plushest in Miami and despite being hit hard during Hurricane Irma, is once again capable of hosting superyachts up to 95 metres. In the shadow of Miami’s luxe Epic Residences & Hotel, the marina isn’t short on high-end amenities. Guests can enjoy sumptuous meals at on site restaurants Area 31 and Zuma.

Sunset Harbour Yacht Club

Set off the Venetian Causeway on Biscayne Bay, Sunset Harbour Yacht Club offers ample dockage outside of the hubbub of the Miami Beach scene. Catering to yachts up to 45 metres with 125 deepwater slips, the designated “clean marina”, an initiative started by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, has some great amenities including a pool and fitness centre. Fuel can be delivered and it is loacated right around the corner from a large Publix supermarket for easy provisioning.

Indian Creek Marina

Across from Miami’s iconic and historic Fountainbleau Resort on Collins Avenue, Indian Creek Marina at the Fountainbleau Resort (home to one of the best hotel spas to visit in Miami ) can host yachts up to 76 metres. In February, this waterway is lined with yachts during the Miami Yacht and Brokerage Show. The rest of the year, it’s open to transiting yachts and makes a great destination marina that is in close distance to Miami’s finest spas and eateries, as it's located right across from the beach.

Miami Beach Marina

In the south end of Miami Beach, the full-service Miami Beach Marina has 400 slips for yachts up to 76 metres. The marina offers direct access to Government Cut, a manmade shipping channel between Miami Beach and Fisher Island, which allows better access to the Port of Miami. Likewise, it’s only moments to the best of what South Beach has to offer; the beach and the best restaurants, nightlife and spas are just steps away.

Private Marinas

Yachtsmen seeking a private marina experience while in Miami should look no further than these havens:

The exclusive private island community of Fisher Island Club, across from Miami Beach, is ‘members only’, but sponsorship (from a member or the dockmaster) allows temporary membership for yachts up to 76.2 metres in length to tie up in the marina. And their owners can enjoy all the perks of the club, including the beach club, spa, tennis centre, hotel, restaurants and PB Dye-designed golf course.

Midway between Miami and Fort Lauderdale in Aventura, Turnberry Isle Marina Yacht Club accommodates 117 yachts up to 45-metres. Amenities include 24-hour security, a private ocean club, pool, spa, several restaurants, and two 18-hole Raymond Floyd-designed championship golf courses.

The Rise of the Superyacht Marina

As yacht continue to grow bigger, so too does the demand for where to berth them.

By Miriam Cain and Ellys Woodhouse

restaurant superyacht marina

With more and more yachts on the water, many of which are well above 130ft, finding a safe harbor in the right location for your superyacht can be harder than it sounds. But investors are responding to the demand. In a growing trend for supersized destination marinas, the International Yacht Club d’Antibes recently invested a hefty €135m (approx. $146m) to upgrade Port Vauban’s iconic Quai Camille Rayon, better known as Billionaires’ Quay because of the gargantuan size of yachts it can accommodate. Offering far more than just a place to park your yacht, the new site boasts a brand new clubhouse, reception area for users of the helipad and upgraded crew facilities.

Barcelona’s Port Vell has also been transformed into an impressive 151-berth facility for yachts of up to 620ft, offering owners and crew convenient access to the city and all that the popular Catalan capital has to offer. The only other marina in Europe with larger berths than Barcelona is Porto Montenegro in the Bay of Kotor. Credited with starting the trend for destination marinas when it completed construction in 2014, Porto Montenegro has become a destination in itself, with a five-star hotel, luxury boutiques and even an International School on-site for berth owners to use.

Prices however can be high for such prime locations — a 280ft superyacht owner would need to pay in the region of €8.5m ($9.1m) for a 280-ft berth on a ten-year lease in Quai Camille Rayon. Many berths are then sublet by their owners at high prices when not in use, and given that most superyachts spend just 10% cruising, a berth to call home for these larger yachts (whether rented or owned) has become an essential, and competitive, part of ownership — something that is true not just for the owner, but also for the crew who prefer a home base where they can put down roots and buy property.

restaurant superyacht marina

A number of future developments are also in the pipeline, designed to fill the gap for large superyacht berths, including a brand new and quite visionary project called Habacoa, located in the Bahamas. Scheduled to launch in 2027, Port Habacoa will be the largest marina in North America, offering a total of 150 berths spanning from 60ft (18m) to 720ft (220m). Lying 50 nautical miles from Nassau, and only 160 nautical miles from the yachting hub of Fort Lauderdale, Habacoa is certainly fulfilling a demand as statistics suggest that there are seven superyachts for every berth in the US.

“This is going to be the largest superyacht marina in the entire region – and there’s no dispute about that,” explains Ra’anan Ben-Zur, the developer and CEO behind Habacoa. “We have 134 superyacht berths, the entire East Coast of the United States has about 150. And we are going to have 14 berths of 300 ft and above. There’s maybe a handful, if that, of that size in the entire East Coast of the United States.”

restaurant superyacht marina

Speaking over video call from his base in Miami, Ben-Zur explains that the main obstacle facing developing superyacht marinas in the US is the acute shortage of space: “In the US, generally, all oceanfront land is developed, right? [Habacoa] has 500 acres, there’s not 500 acres of oceanfront in the US just sitting there waiting for people to develop it. It’s been fully developed.”

Heesen Yachts Unveils its Most Sustainable Superyacht Yet

As the development of US marinas slows to an almost standstill, the size of the yachts that wish to park there is growing, and fast – which in turn drives up the demand for space to keep them. “There hasn’t been a new marina built here or renovated [other than] small additions for 25 years,” explains Ben-Zur. “25 years ago, the largest boats in the world may have been 20 meters, now it’s 200 meters. So, those big boats can’t make it into the old marinas. They can’t get in, it’s not big enough, it’s not deep enough. They don’t have the capacity and they don’t have the utilities.”

restaurant superyacht marina

“Most marinas, in the US especially, I would call them glorified parking lots; they put their boat there and they go,” jibs Ben-Zur. “The owner is never on the boat there because, I mean, if you look at the big marinas here in Miami, some of which are the largest marinas in the US, there’s nothing there. There’s maybe a restaurant and a bar for the crew, but the owner doesn’t go there.”

In stark contrast, the highly anticipated Habacoa aims to become one of the most exclusive destination marinas in the world. More than just a safe harbor, Habacoa will feature an exclusive, members-only yacht club, and a casino and nightclub complex designed by renowned architect Zaha Hadid. The sustainable development also includes residences and a five-star hotel, restaurants, boutiques, a children’s water park and a wellness and fitness center.

Not to mention the facilities specially built for the crew and captains, either. “It will have everything that you can think of,” describes Ben-Zur, before listing the on-site gym, showers, laundry facilities and pool, just to name a few, all of which will be free for the crew to use.

With this plethora of amenities to please the three required clientele types – “the boat, the captain and the crew, and, of course, the owner,” – Habacoa is set to be, as Ben-Zur puts it: “We’re going to be the Amazon in the superyachts community.”

Inside the Maldives’ first superyacht marina, the newest playground of the super rich

Y ou’d be forgiven for assuming the Maldives, a country that is 99 per cent water and a playground for the uber wealthy, comfortably caters for the yachting elite. The archipelago’s 172 luxury resorts, many of which are built on private islands, offer every conceivable amenity, from sublime underwater spas to incongruous snow rooms. Yet a purpose-built superyacht marina is a glaring omission from the list, an anomaly that Atoll Estates is looking to change.

The UAE-based company has revealed plans for a five-star development set within 500 hectares of a natural lagoon in the South Malé Atoll. Located just 21 miles from Malé International airport (which completes a large expansion in 2025 to cater for the estimated 4.3 million travellers passing through each year), Zamani Islands will comprise three individual resorts spread across eight islands. Designed in partnership with Dubai-based architects Killa Design, it promises to host the island chain’s first dedicated superyacht marina.

“By providing state-of-the-art facilities for superyachts , the marina will attract more high-net-worth individuals and yachting enthusiasts to the region,” says Amit Majumder, co-founder and managing partner of Atoll Estates, who believes the influx will boost local tourism. “The increased yachting traffic will foster the development of related services and infrastructure, further establishing the Maldives as a premier yachting destination on the global stage.”

The initial phase of the development, set to open in 2026, will include the first of three distinct resorts made up of a collection of private residences, each with a private pier for yacht tenders. Lifelong berthing at the marina (once complete) will also be included. The second “multi-experiential” resort is aimed at families and couples with a private island beach club for over 21s, while the third “lifestyle” resort will have a total of 300 keys, a yacht and sailing club and the largest events and entertainment venue in the country.

Spanning a whopping 60,000 square metres, Zamani Islands marina’s full-service facilities are pitched to include crew amenities, provisioning, maintenance and access to a yacht club. Of the 120 yacht berths, 60 will be dedicated to superyachts upwards of 30m in length, with a single dockside mooring of up to 200m. Other resort amenities include the first medical spa in the country (though Soneva’s two wellness complexes may have pipped them to the post), personal butler service, and 28 food and beverage venues, including an underwater restaurant.

It’s no secret that the Maldives’ wide-open waters, vibrant coral reefs and diving hot spots make it a yachting haven. Around 70 to 100 large motor and sailing yachts arrive in Maldivian waters each year (per 2021-2023 Maldivian Coast Guard cruising permit applications). The country’s strategic location in the Indian Ocean also makes it a convenient stopover for yachts travelling between the Middle East, southeast Asia, and the Indian subcontinent. According to tracking data compiled by Bloomberg, the Maldives saw more visiting yachts than Hong Kong and Singapore combined in 2023, slightly outpacing Thailand. So why has there not been a superyacht marina in the pipeline before now?

“For the past 20 years, the Maldives’ private resort tourism model has proven highly profitable and pretty low risk,” says Splinter Fangman, a yacht and berth broker at Edmiston. “With a superyacht marina, it’s still a gamble whether the yachts will actually use it.”

For vessels upwards of 70m that can sustain themselves at anchor for weeks at a time, the Maldives’ current lack of infrastructure isn’t an issue. Yachts like 134m Serene and 97m Faith are self-sufficient floating resorts equipped with their own high-end amenities, even the aforementioned snow room. Provisioning and fuel bunkering is done ship to ship using a large barge that caters for private island resorts. Though the opportunity to dock at a marina to use shore power, turn off systems and generators, and allow the crew to go ashore is appealing, it’s not a requisite, says Fangman, especially for owners who prize privacy above all else.

For smaller yachts that depend on the services of a marina, making the crossing to the Indian Ocean can be challenging. That said, the Maldives is well placed to capture substantial traffic in the burgeoning Asia-Pacific yachts, while vessels based in the Middle East regard it as an attractive alternative to the crowded anchorages of the Caribbean.

“A marina in the Maldives will pull through huge numbers of yachts from the Red Sea and Persian Gulf,” says Donovan Chong, an independent marina entrepreneur. He cites the 146m Lürssen-built Opera, owned by Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the deputy prime minister of the United Arab Emirates, which typically berths in Dubai, as a frequent visitor to the Maldivian archipelago.

Demand for a marina that caters to the super rich is now a strategic focus for the Maldives, adds Chong, who notes there are several additional imminent marina projects in the pipeline. “The Maldivian government has made it a top priority to explore new tourism verticals beyond hotels and resorts and to establish the Maldives as the ‘eastern terminus’ of the yachting world.”

He believes a dedicated marina will unlock the untapped potential of the Maldives as a charter (yacht rental) hot spot, and that future resorts need to be built around the marina, rather than treating it as an amenity. Majumder agrees. “Zamani Islands is more than just a residence; it is a lifestyle — one that seamlessly blends the opulence of land and sea, providing a haven for those who appreciate the finer things in life.” In other words, build it and the yachts will come.

“It was our intention from the outset to conceive a resort with sustainability truly at its heart that will do good for both people and place,” Majumder and Bourtov said in a statement . “Within this framework, Zamani Islands will also set new standards for a lifestyle destination both within the Maldives and globally.”

Zamani Islands Marina

Zamani Islands will have a strong focus on sustainability, too. The resort is designed to run on 100 percent renewable energy and could eventually produce up to 50 percent of its own food. Furthermore, Atoll Estates has carefully selected eco-friendly construction materials and has implemented a coral relocation and propagation program. That means you can feel extra good during your stay.

The first part of Zamani Islands will open in spring 2026.

Clover Island restaurant losing its nearly 50-year-old dock on the Columbia River

A popular dinner spot on Kennewick’s Clover Island is about to lose the feature that helped give it its name.

Cedars at Pier One will soon lose its dock after the Port of Kennewick opted not to replace the structure, now at the end of its useful life after sitting in the water for nearly half a century..

Boaters need not fret too much. The restaurant, owned by Carrie and Doug Lundgren, is still accessible via the Columbia River.

Diners arriving by water can moor at the public docks on the sheltered side of the island, then walk the short distance to 355 N. Clover Island Drive.

The dock is included in the Lundgrens’ agreement to lease the restaurant site from the port. The deal specifies that their company, Boulder Heights, would keep the dock clean while the port would maintain it.

But the dock is failing and it would be too expensive and too burdensome go modernize it. Specifically, the metal pilings the dock sits on are showing the effects of five decades of current, wind and wake from passing vessels, including watercraft, barges and cruise boats.

A concrete dock replaced a wooden one in 1996, but the update didn’t address the pilings.

With the end in sight, the port built public moorage on the south side of Clover Island in 2006 when it overhauled the marina, said Tana Badler Inglima, deputy port director.

Replacing the old dock and pilings would be more than simply switching out the old one with new. A modern dock would have to be ADA accessible and be designed with aquatic life in mind. That’s too expensive for a structure in such a hostile environment.

The port decided to remove the entire structure after reaching an agreement with the the Lundgrens.

The couple agreed to waive their right to a dock in exchange $18,000 off their annual land lease payments.

The new lease, approved by the port commission on Aug. 27, translates to $1,500 a month through the end of the lease in 2049.

It begins in September and reduces the restaurant’s base rent to $2,548, from $4,016. The lease includes regular cost-of-living adjustments in the future.

Clover Island

The Lundgrens have owned and operated Cedars since late 2019, when they bought it from Darci and David Mitchem, who retired.

Cedars is one of several visitor destinations on the port-controlled Clover Island.

Landlubbers can access the island from Columbia Drive via South Washington Street/North Clover Island Drive and by water at the boat launch as well as the public and private docks.

Clover is home to the Clover Island Inn, Ice Harbor Brewery at the Marina, a U.S. Coast Guard Station, a lighthouse, a yacht club, public marina and port offices.

▪ In related news, the city of Richland removed its swim dock at Howard Amon Park on Aug. 27, in part to help curtail cyanotixins in the area.

The dock had served as a collection point for debris, according to the city and the Benton Franklin Health District.

'Hospital at home' startup Doccla raises $46 million for its European expansion

Hospitals around the world regularly face bed shortages -- an issue that can get exacerbated to breaking point when a health scare or other large-scale disaster occurs. A startup called Doccla is bringing technology to bear address the issue: it's building "virtual bed" tech to help doctors remotely manage patients who have either been discharged early, or in some cases never go to the hospital at all. After gaining traction in the U.K. and Ireland, it's now raised £35 million ($46 million) to expand in Europe.

Fire destroys schooner landing restaurant in damariscotta.

A large structure fire burned down Schooner Landing Restaurant and Marina in Damariscotta on Sunday morning.

Damariscotta Fire Department say six departments were called in to control the fire after they first received reports around 3:00 in the morning.

Fire Chief John Roberts says the construction of the building made extinguishing the blaze difficult.

"The access was very difficult because we had to access from above with deck guns," said Roberts. "And then we also had to access the underneath to the restaurant because it's on piers."

Officials say the fire was extinguished around 7:30 Sunday morning, and there were no injuries. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Main Street in Damariscotta was closed from the Damariscotta/Newcastle bridge to the Bristol Road intersection to aid the firefighting efforts. The road has since reopened.

Locals who came to observe the aftermath of the blaze say the loss of the restaurant is a heavy one for the community.

"This is the worst time for this to happen," said one Damariscotta resident, who asked to remain anonymous. "A lot of people would come here for Labor Day in the past. And it was always filled, it was always popular."

Elisabetta’s Restaurante

Cozy, rustic, and unapologetically delightful, Elisabetta’s is one of the best places in town for al fresco dining with waterfront views and an incredible wine list. When it comes to allure, the secret’s in the sauce, (obviously) but also in the bread, pasta, sausage, and gelato, which are all handmade from scratch. The menu here is versatile and can fit any group or occasion, whether you’re popping in for cocktails and small bites, on the hunt for brunch, or ready to settle in for a fabulous family dinner.

Lynora’s Restaurant

This charming Italian eatery traces its origins back to 1974, when the owners emigrated from Italy to South Florida and got their start selling pizza by the slice. Today Lynora’s is a beloved fixture of the community and is open for lunch, dinner and brunch. The pizza is still to die for and there are gluten-free and vegan options available. Lynora’s pasta is made in house and the brunch cocktails – sangria, bellinis, and mimosas–arrive in a pitcher, as they should.

10 Restaurants Humphrey Bogart Loved Across The US

Humphrey Bogart and favored restaurants

Humphrey Bogart — the iconic American actor renowned for his tough-guy roles in classic films like "Casablanca" and "The Maltese Falcon" — had a certain fondness for good food, but he's better known for his love of drink. Indeed, Bogart often drank his favorite liquor on set , and that liquor was Scotch. He liked it so much that witty quotes are attributed to him in regards to the drink, including when he supposedly said, "Scotch is a very valuable part of my life."

But even Bogie knew not to drink on an empty stomach, at least so far as we can tell from anecdotal evidence of him holding his liquor well. For instance, Bogart reportedly ordered two Scotch and sodas with his French toast whenever he was lunching at Romanoff's, a Beverly Hills restaurant frequented by the big stars during Hollywood's Golden Age.

Romanoff's was far from the only restaurant Bogart patronized. He seemed to have a penchant for being seen at all of the renowned Hollywood hotspots, including The Musso & Frank Grill, which was also one of the  restaurants Marilyn Monroe loved in California . In fact, despite getting his start on stage in New York City, most of Bogart's favorite restaurants appear to have been around Los Angeles, some of which you can still visit today — though he spent ample time at eateries on both coasts. Here's a look at them for you, kid.

The Formosa Café in Los Angeles

interior of The Formosa Café

According to The Formosa Café's management, Humphrey Bogart was a regular at this restaurant, which is no surprise, given the positive reputation it had among famous actors and singers — and especially because of its convenient location right across the street from the old Samuel Goldwyn Studio, where Bogart's 1937 film "Dead End" was filmed. The Formosa also boasts being a former hangout for James Dean, Ava Gardner, Frank Sinatra, and John Wayne.

Although you may not see as many stars there today as during the Golden Age of Hollywood, The Formosa Café is still open for business and serves tasty Chinese food — like wonton soup and chow mein  — in an atmosphere designed to recall its Hollywood glory days. A retro decor reigns throughout, with scarlet booth seating in the main dining room and the original red trolley-car section fully restored. You also won't be able to miss the portraits of its famous past patrons lining the walls.

The Musso & Frank Grill in Los Angeles

Musso & Frank Grill interior

We know that back in the day, Marilyn Monroe liked to sit at booth three in The Musso & Frank Grill. This was also one of the  restaurants Elizabeth Taylor loved , though she preferred dining in the back room, far from prying eyes. Furthermore, Musso & Frank ranked among  Frank Sinatra's favorite restaurants , and he purportedly liked booth 224. With all of these stars in attendance, it's hard to imagine that there was room for anyone else — yet Humphrey Bogart apparently managed to squeeze in, because he was also known to be a regular, though we may never know which table he favored.

However, the restaurant's management claims that Bogart could be regularly spotted at the bar with his fourth and final wife, actress Lauren Bacall, or with author Dashiell Hammett, who created the detective character Sam Spade that Bogie played in "The Maltese Falcon." We don't know what Bogart liked to order here, but the menu hasn't changed a lot since his time, so if you eat something at Musso & Frank, you may very well be tasting something similar to what the Hollywood icon enjoyed. Dishes that stand out for their longevity on the menu include grilled lamb kidneys with bacon and grenadine of beef — and Bogie would certainly approve of the extensive Scotch selection offered at the bar nowadays.

Barney's Beanery in Los Angeles

exterior of Barney's Beanery

Dating back to the 1920s, Barney's Beanery became so popular over the past century that it's expanded to multiple locations across LA — but the original restaurant is sited on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, and that's where countless stars could enjoy some of the best chili in town. It's widely reported that silver-screen customers included James Cagney, Marilyn Monroe, and Judy Garland ... and contemporary celebrities such as Taylor Swift are being spotted there these days, too.

Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall are believed to have considered Barney's Beanery as their special spot. While the place lost its shine as a Hollywood Golden Age hangout while gaining a hard-rocking reputation over the following decades — drawing the likes of Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison — today you can still stop into the original location to try their legendary chili. To immerse yourself in the good old days, go for the classic beef chili made with the same recipe since Barney's first opened for business, served with cheese, sour cream, and onions; there's a decent chance that Bogie and Bacall enjoyed it as well.

Five Crowns (formerly The Hurley Bell) in Corona del Mar

Five Crowns restaurant exterior

As a premier steakhouse of Corona del Mar operating since 1965, Five Crowns draws upscale foodies from near and far. However, while a previous business that occupied this site also attracted high-class clientele — allegedly including Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall — this establishment's history is marked by some debauched details.

According to local historians, the Five Crowns' Tudor-style building was constructed in 1936 to resemble a venerable inn near London, and it was called The Hurley Bell. Corona del Mar was sparsely developed at the time, but being close to Newport Beach, The Hurley Bell's   fare grew in popularity among Hollywood stars who owned boats docked at the nearby marina — and this is where Bogart kept his beloved yacht, a sailboat named Santana. The Hurley Bell was reputedly a haven and hideaway for many luminaries; in addition to Bogie and Bacall, Howard Hughes and Rita Hayworth were said to rendezvous there, while other notables purportedly seen inside include Ava Gardner, Lana Turner, and Bette Davis.

The original owner died in the late '40s, and business soon went downhill; under the management of a series of tenants, The Hurley Bell was accused of becoming a brothel and gambling parlor. Thankfully, when Five Crowns was launched, the building was restored and is now once again fit for Hollywood royalty.

Chasen's in Los Angeles

Chasen's restaurant sign and awning

This dearly departed LA restaurant was an all-time favorite among the Hollywood elite during its nearly 60 years of operating — sadly, it closed in 1995. Chasen's was also famous for its chili, which Elizabeth Taylor reportedly loved so much that while filming "Cleopatra" in Italy, she had it regularly shipped to Rome. It seems that fine Italian food couldn't hold a candle to Chasen's menu, at least not for her.

Humphrey Bogart was also a big fan of the restaurant, though he allegedly fought loudly with his third wife, actress Mayo Methot, at their table there. This wasn't the only trouble Bogie found himself in at Chasen's — a widely told Hollywood legend recounts that the actor teamed up with his "Casablanca" co-star Peter Lorre for a drunken heist of the restaurant's safe, before ditching it amid nearby Beverly Boulevard. Though the eatery's namesake restaurateur, David Chasen, considered Bogart as a friend, such shenanigans apparently forced him to kick out the Hollywood icon on multiple occasions. "The trouble with Bogart is that he thinks he's Bogart," Chasen has been quoted as saying.

21 Club in New York City

exterior of 21 Club

This famous Manhattan bar and restaurant had a good run, starting out as a speakeasy during Prohibition, but 21 Club proved to be no match for the pandemic, and it closed down in late 2020. Decades before then, it was a favorite hangout for Humphrey Bogart, and this is where he is believed to have joined Lauren Bacall for their first date — and not all that long afterwards, it's said that Bogie proposed to her here, too.

During its heyday, and all the way up until it closed, the 21 Club had a lot to offer in terms of ambience. Despite being a former speakeasy, it exuded old-world charm, and it was filled with mementos gifted by American presidents and athletes alike. Other star guests purportedly included Alfred Hitchcock, Sophia Loren, Harrison Ford, and Rod Stewart. And while dining options tended to be pricey, the à la carte selections still included a relatively affordable burger with fries.

Romanoff's in Los Angeles

interior of Romanoff's restaurant

Romanoff's, which was open during the 1940s and 1950s, had a relatively short run, but its stellar reputation still endures to this day. Along with Chasen's, it was one of the hottest restaurants in LA, and the place where any famous actor would want to see and be seen. Here Humphrey Bogart's favorite meal  consisted of two Scotch and sodas, French toast, an omelet, a glass of milk, and a coffee with brandy to wash it all down.

The food there was mostly upscale fare like filet mignon and frog legs, and anything else that screamed pretentiousness. The very nature of Romanoff's revolved around pretension — not only from the clientele, who did their best to appear as glamorous as possible, but also from the owner.

Born as Hershel Geguzin, the restaurateur rose from a humble upbringing in New York City by claiming to be a Russian royal with the improbable name of Prince Michael Alexandrovitch Dmitri Obolensky Romanoff — and in a city like LA, where so many people make a living pretending to be something they're not, one can hardly judge him for this. The ruse worked so well that "Romanoff" managed to launch his esteemed eatery with a loan of about $7,500 from stars including Charlie Chaplin, Cary Grant, and Bogart.

Chumley's in New York

patrons drinking at Chumley's

Chumley's was a popular speakeasy during Prohibition, especially among literary intelligentsia, with Ernest Hemingway frequently listed among writers who hung out here. The author who penned "To Have and Have Not" made a major impact on Humphrey Bogart's life, seeing as the movie version of that novel is what first brought together Bogie and Lauren Bacall. It's also rumored that Bogart was a regular Chumley's client when he was in his hometown of New York.

Even after Prohibition ended, Chumley's continued to cultivate a secretive speakeasy vibe, and not long ago it turned into a real restaurant. In 2016, a restaurateur transformed it into an upscale bistro with menu items such as spicy Dungeness crab pot pie and fancy cocktails. Its history was preserved largely through the decor and portraits on the wall of luminaries publicized as past patrons, including Bogart. Sadly, the place closed in 2020, though it's hard to say whether the change in vibe or the pandemic is what did it in.

Vendome in Los Angeles

Humphrey Bogart enjoying a sandwich

In 1928, Humphrey Bogart married his second wife, East Coast stage actress Mary Philips, but the two drifted apart as Bogie started spending more time working on films in LA. By the mid-1930s, he was "spotted at the Billy Wilkerson's Vendome restaurant in Hollywood, with Mayo Methot, the girl he's supposed to marry when his divorce troubles are over," according to an account published by West Hollywood History .

The Vendome was known as a high-quality lunchtime spot and deli and was located near the offices of the Hollywood Reporter, the show-biz trade publication that Wilkerson founded before opening the restaurant. Wilkerson built several other high-profile hangouts, including LA's Cafe Trocadero and the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas. As the original leader of the infamous Rat Pack, in the mid-1950s Bogart and his hard-partying pals were Sin City patrons — but alas, Bogie died in 1957 before he could possibly join the cast of the original 1960 "Ocean's 11" film, shot in Vegas and featuring the Flamingo.

Restaurant La Rue in Los Angeles

Bogart, Methot at La Rue

We don't know a lot about Humphrey Bogart's visits to Restaurant La Rue, but we can certainly surmise that he and his wives enjoyed visiting, since he was photographed with some of them there (one at a time, that is) on multiple occasions. One photograph puts him in a booth with his third wife, Mayo Methot, as he lights her cigarette. In front of him is a glass of something that, shockingly, might be water. On another occasion, he was captured at La Rue with Lauren Bacall, while apparently talking to journalists and posing for photos after receiving his Academy Award for his role in "The African Queen."

But what of the restaurant itself? It was yet another venture by prolific publisher and restaurateur Billy Wilkerson, who also owned Vendome. Restaurant La Rue served French fare and was particularly popular during lunchtime, though its setting was decidedly upscale given the two crystal chandeliers that dominated the main dining room.
