McKinna 58 Pilothouse

  • By Jay Coyle
  • Updated: October 4, 2007

With the number of aggressively priced Taiwanese boats that have made landfall in the United States over the years, many folks are pre-programmed to pigeonhole Taiwan’s boatbuilders at the bottom of the market. While this may once have been fair, a new wave of imports is challenging the notion. McKinna Yachts’ new 58 Pilothouse is a prime example.

She offers attractive styling, a quality finish and technical features that will appeal to experienced yachtsmen moving up or down. Her modern silhouette is not a hodgepodge of borrowed design elements cobbled together; it is an original creation by Florida-based designer J.C. Espinosa. Her superstructure, far from being hastily mismatched with seasoned hull tooling, is one of a series of new hulls designed and engineered for McKinna by Washington-based naval architect Howard Apollonio.

“It would be foolish for us to build an inferior product”, said Bob Million, president of McKinna Yachts. “Our customers are measuring the 58 against a fleet of competitive U.S. and European offerings.”

Million tasked Apollonio with creating a series of hulls (58 to 65 feet) suited for cruising speeds of 25 knots and above. Million described the result as a modified-V form with a fine entry forward and moderate deadrise at the transom. A multiple chine helps trim the 58’s beam to more efficient proportions below the waterline, and the shallow keel enhances tracking at speed and reduces the effects of windage while loitering.

I tested the 58 in 2- to 3-foot seas off Ft. Lauderdale. Our test boat had a pair of 800 hp Caterpillar 3406Es, and we had about 500 gallons of fuel aboard. I recorded a top speed of 24.7 knots at 2280 rpm. Cruising at 22 knots (2100 rpm), the Caterpillar electronics indicated a fuel burn of 66 gallons per hour. She advanced from full stop to maximum speed in 25 seconds without fuss or smoke.

At speed, the 58 has a solid feel and banks appropriately (inboard) in turns. She has more than enough rudder, and I found it unnecessary to put the Hynautic steering hard over to cut very tight turns. A bow thruster and active stabilizers were fitted, and while she has trim tabs, they seem necessary only for minor athwartship adjustments. She runs at relatively shallow trim angles. While the seas we encountered were not challenging, she appeared capable of delivering a soft, dry ride.

The 58’s relatively deep propeller pockets did not generate excessive noise or vibration. At 2100 rpm, I recorded 79 decibels in the saloon and 84 decibels on the bridge-about what I would expect for a yacht in this class. Million intends to offer the 1,000 hp Caterpillar C18s and says the added horsepower paired with shallower propeller pockets will boost her speed by 4 or 5 knots. The tradeoff will be that the 58’s very skinny draft of 3 feet, 10 inches will increase to a bit over 4 feet. While a 5-knot gain seems optimistic, I agree with Million that the added horses are worth the added draft.

This yacht shares the same female hull tooling as the other models in the series. She is built with a combination of vinylester resin and stitched multidirectional reinforcements. Her hull laminate is solid below the waterline and supported by a fiberglass stringer system. Core-Cell is used in the hull sides, exterior decks, structural bulkheads and superstructure. Nida-Core honeycomb coring is used in the interior soles and non-structural bulkheads. Her gelcoat finish is above average-an indication that she is the product of experienced craftsmen and good tooling. The bilges and other out-of-the-way places received similar attention and are properly finished.

The lazarette is accessible through a hatch in the afterdeck and is home to a 27.5kW Onan generator in a sound shield. This is an ideal position for the generator, as it is isolated from the accommodation space. A door leads forward into the engineroom, and access on centerline and outboard of the engines is good. Machinery removal hatches are provided in the overhead. Tankage is near the center of buoyancy to reduce the effect of varying fuel loads on longitudinal trim.

Systems appear well organized, and McKinna follows American Boat & Yacht Council guidelines. This is an advantage for those who frequent U.S. boat yards, as familiar wire coding and system designs keep service personnel off the phone and on task. Hydraulic pumps on both main engines provide redundancy for the hydraulic system, which powers the windlass, bow thruster and stabilizers. An isolation transformer protects the electrical system from fouled shorepower.

The tasteful dose of European flair in the 58’s styling does not compromise her deck arrangement. Walkaround side decks, a ground tackle system hidden discreetly beneath a foredeck hatch, and line and fender stowage lockers in the cabin trunk are quite practical. The afterdeck has a barbecue and space for a table and chairs, or owners can opt for a molded-in seating arrangement with a fixed table. A remote control station hidden in the transom coaming would be an asset for cruising couples when it comes time to handle lines. The swim/tender platform is offered with a tender lift or a crane hidden in the transom. I would choose the latter, since it is less complicated. The flying bridge is accessible from the main cabin as well as the afterdeck, where a clever ladder tucks out of the way into the overhead. The flying bridge has a curved lounge area and wet bar adjacent to the helm station.

While Taiwanese craftsmen are best known for their work in traditional teak, the 58’s high-gloss anigre and walnut burl joinery is on par with European production standards.

Curiously, the arrangement does not seem so foreign. Espinosa’s work on the 58 is creative, yet practical. “Americans need a bit more space to move about”, Million said, “so our doors, berths and baths are a bit wider.”

The main cabin is laid out with a saloon aft and a galley and bench-style dinette amidships. An electric high-low table in the saloon can be raised for formal dining, and a 42-inch flat-screen TV pops out of the joinery. The interior helm station is comfortable, and access to the starboard side deck is convenient.

An alternate arrangement has a bit more seating in the saloon and a curved dinette forward. The lower deck arrangement has a full-beam master suite and two guest staterooms that share a head.

Million’s effort in creating the 58 has paid off. She has the style and feel of a European production yacht and the hardy, straightforward systems design common to U.S. production offerings. The combination makes the 58 somewhat unique in the market and worthy of consideration.

Brochure

This rare widebody 2010 57' McKinna offers the best of all worlds. With a 17' beam, she offers full walk-around side decks and a spacious, updated interior. The previous owner outfitted her for full self-sufficiency (water maker, dive compressor, wireless Yacht Controller) for a bucket list "off the grid" trip to the southern Caribbean. The current owners have kept her up to date with open checkbook TLC, and enjoy her twelve months a year on the Chesapeake Bay, ICW, Florida Keys, and Bahamas. Her efficient Cummins QSM-11 power (660hp each) offers a range of cruising options, from a fuel-sipping 9 knots to an 18 knots-all-day gallop. Even at 18 knots, she is surprisingly efficient relative to her size and weight. Active fin stabilizers offer a comfortable ride at any speed and her hydraulic bow thruster and wireless Yacht Controller offer the ultimate confidence around the dock.  The 22KW Northern Lights generator purrs along effortlessly powering all ship's systems. A total of 6 fridge/freezer drawers allows her to carry food and provisions for extended cruises and the full-size washer and dryer keep the crew looking their best at all times. A 1500-pound lift makes easy work of launching/retrieving the tender. The oversized teak swim platform with safety rails is an excellent spot to swim, sun, and enjoy the scenery. Down below, a generous master stateroom equipped with an ensuite head including a soaking tub and granite counters and floors. There is a VIP forward with a Pullman berth and generous storage. Guest accommodations are completed by an ingenious bunk room, which can be converted into a sitting area by collapsing the large bi-fold wall. The two guest staterooms share a spacious head, which also has granite counters and floors. A KVH HD-7 Satellite dish anchors the entertainment system, and provides hundreds of full HD channels to the 42" pop-up TV in the Salon and in all three staterooms. There is a Fusion multi-zone sound system when it comes time to rock out! Each stateroom also has its own private Bluetooth audio system connected to speakers in the room. Built in Taiwan by master yacht builders, the woodwork and craftsmanship throughout the boat are exquisite. New neutral ultra-leather upholstery adorns the comfy wrap-around sofa and love seat in the salon, and a large dining table makes the generous pilothouse a social focal point both underway and at anchor. The large "super yacht" style glass partition doors opening up to the teak back deck are a work of art and make the whole main level of boat very bright and airy. A full suite of Garmin electronics, including two 15" touchscreens at each helm, make navigation and monitoring the ship's systems a breeze. Simrad autopilot offers two-finger control of the vessel in all conditions. The flying bridge, including a rigid soft top (like a hard top but without the weight aloft), with its two-person helm seat and wrap-around seating areas is a delightful place to sit and watch the world go by either underway, at anchor, or in your favorite marina. Knowledgeable and caring owners have continually upgraded the vessel both inside and out. New Ultra anchor, all new exterior soft goods (including covers), new upholstery, new two-way up/down interior blinds in all staterooms, and all updated maintenance and machinery, are just a few examples.  This is a rare opportunity to purchase a well-cared-for vessel, that is capable of efficient long-range cruising as well as knocking off miles at planing speed, from a fanatical owner.

Bridge Clearance 22' - Arch can fold, but piping for rigid soft top would have to come down.

advanced co brokerage Florida power is pleased to assist you in the purchase of this vessel. This boat is centrally listed by Denison Yachting - Palm Beach.

Satisfied Customers

Mckinna yachts, mckinna yacht owners keep coming back.

Having been a boater all my life, I felt I knew enough to make an intelligent purchase of a new boat. My 60-foot Sport-Fisher was ready for replacement so I started looking for something newer and larger. Several boats were of interest to me but one in particular seemed exceptionally impressive for the price. That boat was a MCKINNA 69 Skylounge which was still in the design phase. I was reluctant to order a boat from a drawing without inspecting and sea trialing it first.

I went ahead and met with the owner of MCKINNA YACHTS, Garret Martin, and discussed the details about MCKINNA’s new model. The meetings went well, and I was impressed with Garret’s knowledge and attention to detail. I decided to place a deposit. I then spent many hours working with Garret and his associate, Gary Stevens, in making the numerous personal preference decisions needed to make the finished product.

Throughout this process I felt confident about MCKINNA as well as Garret and his staff. I never felt that this company had any intentions of placing profit in front of building the best boat possible. Many dollars were absorbed by MCKINNA YACHTS in additional improvements as construction continued. The much-anticipated day finally came when my new boat arrived into the port of San Diego. From the moment I first saw her and to this day, the boat continues to amaze me.

As I enjoyed my new boat a few service items arose. I also decided to customize my boat further. Garret and his crew were diligent and professional in taking care of all service items as well as my personal additions. They continue to provide me with reliable service to this day. As a bonus, the MCKINNA crew made sure I thoroughly understood every system on board and were available to answer any and all questions. The service I receive from MCKINNA is exceptional!!!

To summarize, I feel a good boat takes a hard-working team to make it a success. From the designer to the builder, to the sales and support staff, as well as the owner’s cooperation, I feel I have been lucky to have all of the above. If a new boat is in my future, I would not hesitate to come back to MCKINNA because of Garret and his staff’s expertise and solid operation. Actions speak louder than words, I just ordered my new MCKINNA 94.'

McKinna Luxury Yacht Customer Review

I bought a 2004 MCKINNA 57' Pilothouse to replace my Tiara 35. Over the past several years I have learned a lot about boats, deepened my family’s appreciation of boating and shared many great times with my friends and business associates while aboard my MCKINNA. The MCKINNA 57 is a great boat, and I truly had an emotional attachment to my "condo on water”, but like most boat owners, I anticipated moving-up to my next boat. A year ago, at the Lido Boat Show in Newport Beach, I toured the new MCKINNA 60 Pilothouse and realized it was the boat of my dreams. I remember being “blown away” by the craftsmanship of the interior, the high ceilings (I am 6'2"), the stand-up engine room, the broad beam and the external lines of the boat. It was beautiful!

Having worked with Garret Martin and Gary Stevens of MCKINNA YACHTS, I had confidence in their organization. I normally do not trust salespeople, but found them to be genuine, down to earth and men of their word. These characteristics in combination with performance make this team extremely trustworthy. They never let me down or point fingers in other directions. They make sure I am always a happy boat owner, and they stand behind their product.

When they told me they had a boat available that was similar to the one I had seen at the boat show, my interest peaked. They worked with me, and we sealed the deal with a handshake. Since then, they have performed amazingly, actually doing everything we had verbally agreed upon. They have followed through!

I now have my new boat and I am in love once again. My wife has always enjoyed boating but now passionately looks forward to spending time aboard. The MCKINNA 60 is all I have ever dreamed of and more! In fact, I tell myself many times, "I can't believe I own this boat". By having an organization like MCKINNA YACHTS behind my purchase, it enhances my pleasure, since I know, I will not have to fight for my rights. I know they will be there for me, and they actively want me to enjoy their product. With this kind of treatment, I will not hesitate to buy my next boat from MCKINNA!

We purchased our first MCKINNA, a 57 Pilothouse, in 2003. We knew the minute we came aboard that this was the boat we had been looking for. We truly enjoyed our time on the original “ Slip Away ,” but when we heard that MCKINNA was building a 60 Skylounge with full walk-around side decks, we knew it was time for the next boat. We took delivery of the second “ Slip Away ” and have spent many wonderful hours aboard with friends and family.

The navy-blue hull and graceful lines are attention grabbers while on our mooring in Avalon Harbor. Working with Garret and Gary and all the staff at MCKINNA during the design and build was effortless. They listened to what we wanted in a boat – a light, bright, casual environment where everyone feels comfortable and relaxed – and with their expert guidance we now have the boat of our dreams – right down to the wine refrigerator in the salon!

Their concierge service makes using the boat a breeze – they take care of scheduling the washing, bottom cleaning, fueling, and pump outs. A fully catered party complete with captain is only a phone call or email away with this service. They will even provision the boat for trips upon request. We receive one monthly bill for it all – what could be more convenient and easier!

Everyone at MCKINNA is always available for any questions or requests we may have. We truly feel a part of the MCKINNA family!

Nearly six years ago, I purchased a new MCKINNA 57 Pilothouse. I have made trips in excess 1,300 miles in a variety of conditions, and have been caught in 40+ knot winds on several occasions. I have always felt safe in my boat! I also feel that she gives a very comfortable ride.

As a boat owner, I’m constantly looking at other boats. As I dig around in the bilges and other areas of various boats, the more I appreciate the build and design qualities of my MCKINNA. When I go to boat shows with the idea of buying a new boat, I walk away with the feeling that my MCKINNA is fulfilling my desires and needs perfectly. Bad news for boat salesmen! She has been a trouble free boat, and the “new boat bugs” were minimal.

The support I have received has been outstanding, both at the time of the sale and even now (more than five years later). I would not hesitate to purchase another MCKINNA or do business with their team of professionals, both sales and service! Dr. C.
