Turkish Gulet Food and Meal Options

Last Updated on May 5, 2022

Food is one of the most important aspects of your gulet experience. The food you eat during your time spent cruising becomes some of the clearest memories from your trip. Because it is so important, it is necessary to choose the best menu to meet the needs and desires of you and your party.

Food options for a cruising trip on a Turkish gulet range based on price and the gulet option chosen. Because of this, nearly every gulet has a different food policy with different menus.

Many of the prices for gulets are suggested weekly, with a range of four levels of food service. The lowest cost menu includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner; the second menu includes breakfast, lunch, dinner, and tea and coffee services; and the top two options include a much more elaborate (and often enjoyable) menu.

The lowest cost menu is generally ordered by (and often recommended for) students, student groups, or backpackers with a smaller overall travel budget. With the increase in budget comes more delicate and higher quality meals and beverages.

Lunch often includes a lighter meal, while dinner often consists of more chicken and basic seafood. The upper-level menus include more expensive seafood options and higher quality meats (like lamb).

Choose the menu that best supports your budget, however, if your budget allows, choose a less expensive gulet option with a higher quality meal option. You won’t remember the size or extravagance of your cabin, but you’ll never forget the meals you ate during your cruise.

Gulet Charter In Greece, Italy and Turkey

Gulet holiday – our delicious menus on board.

We have experience with hundreds of customers every year, and we hope you will consider our advice. On our private gulet charters, our guests can choose a standard economy, superior deluxe or luxury menu.

Things to know about gulet holiday menu

  • First of all, do not compare a gulet holiday with all inclusive or full board hotel holiday. Meals on gulets are an experience to equal or even top the best restaurants ashore. You will be dining with a view in the shade of our gulets in secluded bays. Or in front of picturesque fishing villages will make every meal a real feast for all senses.
  • You are going to spend a week or two on your gulet yacht sailing beautiful bays and exclusive beaches. You will visit fascinating and exciting places in total relax. Dining out in local restaurants might sound interesting. But practically it means that your gulet will have to enter the port for each meal. Once in the harbour, will not always be possible to sail back to the bay where to spend the night in total peace. You will have to find the right restaurant that suits all your group. Maybe you’ll have to reserve the table in advance or wait for a free table. But you have your private – exclusive restaurant on board , take advantage of i t!
  • Our advice is to book a full board menu so you can enjoy your gulet holiday fully with no stress in another organisation.  There is no problem if some of you wish to have some meals or snacks outside while visiting the islands or places of interest. But according to our experience, the food on board is so delicious that all our guests prefer to enjoy their meals on board.
  • Gulet holiday always includes a professional cook and waiter on board on your total disposal . Food on board is freshly prepared and beautifully presented. Our chefs will make every effort to accommodate any dietary restrictions. They can also follow kids menu preferences and to fulfil special requests according to personal preferences.
  • Our menus include Greek , Italian and Turkish cooking with international influences generally very appreciated by our clients. Before embarkation, we will send you our embarkation questionnaire where you may let us know your favourite foods.

Food and beverages options on gulet cruises

There are a lot of options for your meal plan when you take gulet cruises . You can have all of your meals on board, or just a few. However, it is recommended to have your all meals onboard. There is going to be pretty restaurants enroute you may want to take break for your suppers. While you may not be able to handpick the entire menu, gulet trips will work to accommodate different dietary needs and preferences for you and your charter guests. Giving a notice to gulet charter company on the booking process, will make your meal preparations as you request.

Staying local may be the best

Don’t look for fried chicken and burgers in Turkey, but you should look for open air grilling as a possibility for your menu options. Grilling meats is very popular in this area. The more you can stay within the traditional foods and cooking methods, the better experience you will have. This can change if boat offers special culinary options.

meals on board

Look to what the charter has to offer

While almost all of the gulet yachts offer meal plans, some of them offer quite a bit more. In the same way that charter gulets can accommodate different diets, they can also accommodate different tastes too. Some even plan special in cruises around chef availability. You can find out by asking if the charter company offers any special meal cruises. Many of them will time their menus to reflect the seasons of the local foods and the fish that can be serviced. Don’t just check off a meal plan, ask what the options are. Private gulet trips are often flexible because they are dealing with a small amount of guests. If all of the guests are amenable to an idea, you would be surprised what can be done.

Gulet Voyage Yachting offers standard menu and deluxe menu. Except these menus, you can take special meals like fish menus that include just fish foods enriched by crustaceans or like vegetarian menus including fresh vegetables cooked with famous Turkish olive oil and fresh fruits. Whole day, hot drinks are available.Another important thing is alcoholic or nonalcoholic drinks can be added your menu beforehand. Alternatively, guests can do shopping from a local market by the time of arrival. Stuff is going to be delivered to your boat.

Gulet Charter

See Why A Gulet Cruise Is A Complete Treat

Gocek Flat Islands - What is Gulet

See Why A Gulet Cruise Is A Complete Treat. Gulet The classic Gulet blends practicality and tradition in a relaxed style that embodies the Blue Cruise. Best known for its rounded aft, low-to-the-water profile and roomy hull, was once used by fisherman and sponge divers to transport their catch. Over the years Gulets have evolved from traditional fishing and cargo vessels into their present profile of a broad beam and wide deck. These days, Gulets are associated primarily with charter and various designs have emerged, all of which come under the collective description of wooden Gulet.

The original Gulet has the rounded aft, but as design limits the number of cabins which can be built in, the “Ayna Kic” (flat-backed) style of Gulet is becoming increasingly popular as a charter vessel. Each of Gulets have been hand-crafted in Turkey and took almost a year to build. Constructed mainly in the shipyards of Marmaris , Bodrum , Fethiye , Bozburun and Istanbul, and along the Black Sea Coast, these boats are equipped with motors as well as fully functional rigging.

These 18-27 metre boats, 5-7 meter wide have 4 -10 private wooden cabins with bathrooms for up to 20 people. Gulet cabins are popular as they are all about the same size, and Blue Cruise in Turkey- Gulet each one has either a double berth, or a double berth lower and single upper (bunk-berths). Every cabin has a wardrobe for hanging clothes and a number of drawers. There is also room for stowing bags and bulky items. All cabins have their own ensuite bathroom with a pull-out shower hose attached at the basin. In the cabin you are provided with bath and hand towels, linen and a blanket. Cabins have 12 volt electricity. The electricity on most Gulets runs at 12 V / 24 V. Please consider this if you wish to bring battery-operated or electric shavers, videos, portable PCs, etc. You are welcome to bring your hairdryer too, but the best way to dry hair in these parts is the natural way – under the sun!

Electricity at the ports is 220 volt.

The living areas of a Gulet consist of an indoors saloon (some have an encloseable aft area instead), and aft deck for dining and lounging in the shade of a sun awning and a Blue Cruise in Turkey- Gulet forward deck with numerous sunbeds which can be shaded by a canopy when the yacht is not sailing. All yachts have a bar where you will buy all your alcoholic and sof drinks for reasonable prices, lounge/ dining area, music system, sundeck and sunbeds.

The rear deck of the Gulet is the lounge and dining area where you will be served freshly prepared breakfast, lunch and dinner meals, including grilled meats, fish dishes, salads and fruits and Turkish specialities. All meals are suprisingly good, healthy and nutritous. Dinner on the aft deck is usually the highlight of the day: a long leisury meal sitting under the stars and listening to the water lapping at the hull of the Gulet.

Gulets are excellent watersports platforms with windsurfer, fishing and snorkelling equipment, canoe for your pleasure. If snorkeling is one of your favourite pastimes, we suggest you pack your own set of gear, then you won’t need to adjust the mask size every time you wish  Blue Cruise in Turkey- Guletto explore the depths.

All yachts have a tender with either oars or an outboard engine. Those yachts that offer optional waterskiing have a powerful outboard engine, while the outboards of others are designed purely for getting to shore and back.

All yachts are equipped for safety, have a VHF radio, a stereo cassette player and a selection of cassettes. Many of the newer vessels have a cellular telephone, TV, video player and CD player.

My name is Mitja Mirtič and I am the CEO of the company Goolets.

In the past 16 years, I have personally inspected more than 500 gulets, yachts, motor sailors, and mini cruisers and cruised on well over 30 boats for my holidays. I am a fan of yachting holidays in the world, and I believe I have a good insight into which vessels are the Best Value (and which ones are not.)

Each year, I update the list of Best Gulet and Yacht Charter choices which is based on these criteria:

  • Which yachts and crew offer the most value for their price;
  • On which of these vessels our agency has the best conditions and most flexibility;
  • On which of these yachts we know, the crew will do their best to make the client happy.

So these options below are a combination of superb services and a special relationship with Goolets agency.

Yes, they are our favorites, but for a reason! It's because we know you will return home happy.

Introduction to Gulet Boats

Gulet boats, with their distinctive design and hospitable charm, are an increasingly popular choice for seafaring enthusiasts seeking a unique sailing experience. Originally used by Turkish fishermen and sponge divers as traditional wooden yachts, gulets have evolved into modern vessels that cater to luxury and comfort. These iconic boats are the go-to option for those wishing to explore the enchanting coastline of the Mediterranean, offering a blend of classic allure and contemporary amenities.

Key Takeaways:

  • Gulet boats are traditional wooden yachts primarily used for leisure voyages.
  • They are renowned for their spacious decks, ample amenities, and elegant craftsmanship.
  • Gulet cruises are popular in the Mediterranean, particularly in Turkey, Croatia, Greece, and Italy.
  • Options range from private rentals to cabin charters, tailored to various guest preferences and budgets.

Gulets

A gulet is a type of traditional Turkish sailing vessel, crafted predominantly from wood and characterized by its broad beam and rounded stern. Designed for stability and comfort, these boats serve as perfect companions for serene trips across the sea. The name ‘gulet’ itself is a reflection of the culture and history bound within these vessels, originating from the comparable French word ‘goélette,’ which means schooner.

Gulets stand out from other types of yachts by offering more room for guests. Their broad decks provide an opportunity to bask in the sun and socialize, while their spacious cabins are designed to accommodate both individuals and groups, ensuring a relaxed on-board living experience. The communal areas, such as the dining section and lounging spaces, encourage an atmosphere where memories are made and shared.

In the modern context, gulets are primarily used for charter services, where guests can rent a vessel either privately or as part of a group, commonly referred to as a ‘cabin charter.’ One can opt for a tailored gulet cruise, which guides tourists along attractive routes, providing stops at serene bays, bustling harbors, and culturally rich coastal towns. These journeys, referred to as “Blue Cruises,” particularly within Turkish waters, have become synonymous with tranquility and luxury.

The rise of gulet cruises is not limited to Türkiye—their appeal has stretched across the Mediterranean into the waters of Croatia, Greece, and Italy, each offering its blend of natural beauty and historical splendor. A gulet cruise presents a maritime adventure that moves at a leisurely pace, perfect for unwinding and indulging in the region’s striking landscapes and culinary delights.

From the luxury of a fully crewed gulet to the independence of a bareboat charter, travelers have the freedom to customize their sailing experience down to the finest detail.

Whether it’s the allure of the Mediterranean’s crystal-clear waters or the enchantment of its coastal towns, a voyage on a gulet boat promises a blend of relaxation, exploration, and indulgence. This article will delve deeper into the world of gulet boats, helping to navigate the considerations and choices that come with planning a memorable gulet vacatio

ARABELLA Crew

A gulet boat is an age-old design modernized for relaxation and opulence at sea. When you embark on a gulet cruise, especially in the storied waters of the Mediterranean, you unveil a time-honored tradition fused with modern comfort.

As you step onto the deck, you’re welcomed by a spacious open area tailored for leisure—a sunbathing area, an al fresco dining setting, and plenty of room to unwind. Below deck, cabins are outfitted with nautical charm and homely comforts—acquiring one of these gulet boats for your journey is akin to securing a moving seaside hotel, flush with character and grace.

DEA DEL MARE Aft deck

One of the most significant advantages of a gulet vacation is the intimacy it offers. Unlike massive cruise liners, where one may feel lost in the multitude, a gulet offers a personalized touch. It’s perfect for families, groups of friends, or even honeymoon couples seeking an exclusive setting to create lasting memories.

A key aspect of the gulet experience is the crew. A dedicated team—from the skipper to the chef—is there to ensure your voyage is nothing short of splendid. Every meal is an event; with fresh, local ingredients, your taste buds will embark on their excursion, complemented by a selection of regional wines.

ESTRELLA DE MAR Food service

Now, let’s focus on your gulet itinerary. The beauty of a gulet cruise is the flexibility it provides. Whether you aim to soak in historical sites or bask in secluded beaches, the itinerary can be customized to your desires. Take a glimpse at what a typical itinerary might encompass in one of the more popular regions:

Day 1-2: Bodrum (Turkey) – Begin your adventure exploring the town’s historic castle and lively bazaars.

Day 3: kos (greece) – venture to this beautiful island to admire ancient ruins and pristine beaches., day 4-5: rhodes (greece) – a unesco world heritage site awaits, rich with history and culture., day 6: symi (greece) – stop by to take in the picturesque harbor and neoclassical mansions., day 7: return to bodrum.

With a broad array of gulet types, sizes, and amenities to select from, the choice ultimately depends on your personal preference and the number of fellow travelers. The price for a gulet charter incorporates several factors but primarily hinges on the size of the boat, the duration of the trip, and the season. Luxurious options come with opulent amenities like Jacuzzis, water toys, and gourmet dining services, while standard options focus on comfort and the authentic experience.

Understanding gulet rental costs is crucial in the planning stages. Here are a couple of factors that play a role:

  • Crew: The cost includes wages for the captain, chef, and other crew members.
  • Provisions: Expect to cover the food and drinks, which the crew will prepare as per your preferences.

In essence, every aspect of a gulet cruise revolves around tailoring the experience to your preferences. As you contemplate the soothing rhythms of the sea aboard your gulet, remember that this isn’t just a holiday—it’s an exploration of maritime culture, a journey back in time, and an embrace of sheer relaxation.

Whether you’re lounging on the spacious deck under the sun, savoring the local gastronomy prepared by your onboard chef, or diving into the azure waters of a secluded cove, a gulet journey is a bespoke adventure of leisure and luxury. It’s about creating lasting memories with friends and family while discovering the timeless beauty and historical richness that coastal destinations have to offer. Blue Cruises Turkey What is a Gulet

If you had lived in the southern region of Turkey your whole life or if you had come from a sailing or boat background then you would instinctively know exactly what a gulet is. A strange-sounding word to the many who may only be learning about Gulets or cruises for the very first time. Coming from the French word Gouëlette (meaning Schooner) originally, then morphing into the Venetian word Gołéta and on into the Turkish name Gulet.

Originally they were used for freight, fishing, and sponge-diving the gulet building industry of antiquity started in the Bodrum region, that hasn’t changed and neither has the overall style of build or design. The average size is between 20 to 30 meters in length and usually features 4 to 8 cabins. Each yacht takes between 9 to 12 months to build. The traditional design is either a two-mast or three-mast design. Many are not properly rigged for sailing therefor diesel power is now almost always used. Today the gulets are still built in a classic sleek wooden design.

To help you understand exactly what gulets are the simplest way to explain is that there are 3 basic types.

1) A Karpuzkic Gulet, this is the most common type of all and they all have a rounded stern and an overall rounded appearance of build, this is the most noticeable way that you can spot them and the strongest characteristic of this type build.

2) A Tirhandil Gulet, this style of Gulet is only found in the Aegean region, they are the oldest true form and the closet design to the first gulet yachts ever built, with their long and narrow stern. They are smaller overall in size to the other 2 types including the basic cabin space but they are also the most seaworthy.

3) Lastly the Aynakic Gulet, this is generally the larger of all three and the most important feature and design is the large interior space especially the cabins. From the outside, they tend to look blocky and bulky but the interior of the Aynakic is generally the most luxurious.

Each type of the 3 Gulet designs come in either Standard, Deluxe or Luxury. Every Gulet comes with its own crew members and depending on the size of the vessel that will vary but each boat will have a Captain, a Sailor ( understudy to the captain ) and a Chef, the luxury class of boat also commonly has the added extra of a hostess, that will manage the salon, serving drinks, snacks and food and cleaning the cabins.

Although used for centuries and by many civilisations that lived in the region it was in the 1960s that the tourism industry got kick-started and the life of the gulet cruise changed forever.

A Turkish writer named Cevat Sakir Kabaagacli and a group of his friends began to use the gulets for yacht holidays throughout the southern Mediterranean coast of Turkey they called them Blue Cruises, a phrase that stuck. This really was the birth of the gullet for private gulet hire as we now know it. Today you can see these handcrafted yachts all over the eastern Mediterranean, Greece and Croatia.

Turkish Gulets: Everything You Need to Know

What are Turkish Gulets? And (More Importantly) How Do You Pronounce "Gulet"?

If you've spent any time in seaside towns overlooking the Mediterranean, you've likely seen these distinctive double- and triple-masted wooden boats cruising along the coast. Often referred to as "classic" or "traditional", these old-fashioned-looking Turkish yachts are a relatively recent holiday concept dating back to the 1970s. True, they evolved from wooden cargo ships used by fishermen and sponge-divers, but today's gulets are a far cry from the working ships of yore.

  • All About Turkish Gulets

All About Gulets

Modern day gulets (pronounced goo-lets ) are hand-crafted wooden boats designed and built in shipyards along the southwest coast of Turkey, exclusively for leisure and enjoyment. Design-wise, they have low profiles, making them very stable in the water (terrific if you're prone to sea-sickness ) and well-suited for exploring shallow bays and coves where larger boats are unable to venture.

Functioning like floating hotels, Turkish gulets come with an infinite range of options – from the most basic 1-star hostel to opulent, 5-star, ultra-luxury accommodations, and everything in between.

  • Gulets are always crewed. Passengers don't need any sailing knowledge or experience to enjoy a gulet holiday. (The gulet's size and service level dictate the number of crew onboard.)
  • Every gulet features an open sundeck for sun-seekers, and shaded areas for those who prefer to avoid the sun.
  • Gulet cabins are smaller than hotel rooms, but that rarely poses a problem for guests. After all, you'll spend most of your vacation time on deck, in the water, or exploring your destination – and very little time indoors.
  • There are always separate sleeping quarters on gulets, but many travellers enjoy sleeping outdoors – listening to the quiet lapping of the water (a sound called susesi in Turkish) and watching stars in the dark night sky. (Whether indoors or out, some claim the best sleep of their lives is on a boat - due to the gentle rocking of the waves.)
  • Boat galleys (kitchens) are incredibly tiny compared to restaurant kitchens – but the gulet's cook is master of the small space and responsible for preparing all meals, so there's no need to worry about how it all works.

All Turkish gulets feature private cabins and bathrooms, combined with plenty of shared living space on deck for meals, sunbathing and otherwise relaxing. But that's where the similarities end. Customized features include anything from basic air-conditioning to surround-sound theatres and Jacuzzi hot tubs. Whatever amenities you need, there's a gulet to suit your needs.

The Evolution of Gulets

As recently as the early 1970s, people who wanted to explore the splendour of the Turquoise coast by boat had to have access to a private yacht, or sail aboard a fishing or sponge boat. It was an "either / or" situation – you could cruise in the absolute comfort of the rich and famous (provided you yourself were rich and famous, or were friendly with someone who was), or you could rough it on a working boat with few creature comforts. There were no options in between.

Fortunately, as more and more people discovered the joys of leisurely sailing Turkey's picturesque coastline, savvy ship builders in the Bodrum area modified their working boat designs to better suit the needs of travellers from all walks of life. And thus evolved the modern Turkish gulet.

Gulet Construction & Maintenance

Turkish gulets are now constructed in numerous shipyards along the southwest coast.

Master craftsmen employ teak, mahogany, oak and other hardwoods in the construction of these sturdy wooden yachts. Pine is sometimes used too, as it is a less expensive option, but the softer wood does not last as long as its hardwood counterparts.

The construction process - which has been used since the 1800s – is called "plank on frame" and is similar for all gulets – whether fancy or plain. It can take more than a year to build a single gulet!

  • First the gulet's frame is built to provide the foundation for the rest of construction.
  • Then, starting from the keel (the "backbone of the boat"), solid timber planks are fastened to the sides of the boat, forming the hull. These planks are approximately 4cm thick, giving the hull its incredible strength and durability.
  • Once the hull planking is complete, cotton or oakum caulking is methodically pounded into every crack between the boards. Caulking a solid wood boat is quite an art, and people who specialize in it are kept busy each year when boats return to the shipyard for annual maintenance.
  • After caulking, several coats of water-proof plaster are applied to the underwater portion of the hull. And, after sanding, the boat is painted or varnished before being launched into the sea.
  • The masts, engine(s), electrical and plumbing systems, water and fuel tanks, air conditioning system, etc. are incorporated into the boat as it is built.
  • The deck and interior structure (cabins, bathrooms, galley, salon, seating areas, etc.) are left to the end of the construction process, and are built once everything else is in place.

When a wood boat is first launched (or re-launched after lengthy time in the shipyard), it is not uncommon for it to take on some water (i.e., leak). Assuming the caulking and plastering have been done correctly, the leaking stops within a few days as the dry planks absorb water and swell tightly together.

Gulets are exceptionally safe boats, but regular maintenance is required to ensure their on-going seaworthiness. Each year, the hull must be carefully inspected for leaks. Damaged timbers must be removed and replaced. Barnacles must be scraped off (the parasites bore into the wood, potentially damaging the integrity of the hull). And caulking, plaster, and paint must be re-applied as necessary.

A well-built, well-maintained Turkish gulet can last for decades. But even a few years of neglect will lead to a wooden boat's speedy demise.

Boat Safety

Commercial gulets in Turkey undergo annual inspection by the Harbour Master, including verification and testing of their navigational and safety equipment - including fire and smoke detectors, life jackets, life rings, life rafts, fire extinguishers and other fire fighting equipment, and safety flares.

Fire is the biggest threat to these highly varnished, wood vessels – so smoking is never permitted inside the boat. Some gulets allow smoking on deck, but guests are cautioned to be particularly careful when doing so. The gulet's crew will advise you of all safety rules and protocols before departing on a cruise.

Sailing on a Turkish Gulet

Gulets are classified as motor-sailers because they are powered by one or more engines, which can be supplemented with sails. In actual fact, they are not very efficient sailboats because of their massive size. But, if you're not in a hurry to get to your destination, it is an incredibly peaceful experience to bob along the sea powered solely by the wind.

One benefit enjoyed by gulets with sails is the ability to stabilize in rough water. With the sails raised, the vessel is less prone to chiming (rocking back and forth) when waves hit the hull from the side. To ensure the most comfortable cruise holiday, nervous sailors, or those prone to " mal de mer " should confirm whether their boat has working sails before booking. (Surprisingly, not all gulets are equipped with sails. And, even more surprisingly, not all gulet captains and crew are knowledgeable about sailing!)

Blue Cruises

From their humble beginnings in Bodrum, these purpose-built leisure boats have slowly permeated into the rest of the Mediterranean, and are now popular with holiday makers in Greece, Italy, Montenegro and Croatia. Often referred to as " Blue Cruises ", gulet holidays combine all the elements of a seaside resort getaway with the chance to travel and explore a variety of beautiful locations along the coast. We can't imagine a nicer way to vacation. Can you?
