Video shows moments before superyacht went down in storm off Sicily

Newly released video captures a luxury superyacht being battered by a violent storm before it suddenly sank off Sicily with 22 people aboard Monday.

The grainy images obtained by NBC News and other outlets were recorded on closed-circuit television not far from where the Bayesian was anchored, about a half-mile from the port of Porticello, on Sicily’s northern coast .

The yacht's 250-foot mast, illuminated with lights and lashed by the storm, appears to bend to one side before it finally disappears and is replaced by darkness.

The speed with which a yacht built to handle the roughest seas capsized stunned maritime experts.  

“I can’t remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that, you know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size,” said Stephen Richter of SAR Marine Consulting.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and five of the 22 other people who were aboard the 184-foot vessel remain unaccounted for and are believed to be trapped in the Bayesian’s hull, nearly 170 feet underwater.

Officials confirmed Monday that at least one person, the ship’s cook, had died.  

Superyachts like the Bayesian, which had been available for charters at a rate of $215,000 a week, are designed to stay afloat even as they are taking on water to give the people aboard a chance to escape, Richter said. 

“Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday,” Richter said. “They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed.”

Built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered Bayesian could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters. 

On Tuesday, Italian rescue workers resumed the search for Lynch and the five other passengers still missing: Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife.

“The fear is that the bodies got trapped inside the vessel,” Salvatore Cocina, the head of civil protection in Sicily, told Reuters .

The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was one of the 15 people rescued Monday after it capsized.

“It’s extremely rare for a boat of this size to sink,” Richter said.

What’s not rare is the kind of storm that sank it , said Simon Boxall, senior lecturer in oceanography at Britain’s University of Southampton.

“People assume the Mediterranean is this rather calm and passive place that never gets storms and always blue skies,” Boxall said. “In fact, you get some quite horrendous storms that are not uncommon at this time of year.”

The president of Italy’s meteorological society has said Monday’s violent storm may have involved a waterspout, essentially a tornado over water, or a downburst, which occurs more frequently but doesn’t involve the rotation of the air.

Luca Mercalli, president of the Italian Meteorology Society, also said recent temperatures may have been a factor. 

“The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius [86 Fahrenheit], which is almost 3 degrees more than normal,” Mercalli told Reuters. “This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms.”

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who two months ago was acquitted by a San Francisco jury of fraud charges stemming from the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion.

Prosecutors alleged that Lynch, dubbed “Britain’s Bill Gates,” and Autonomy’s vice president for finance, Stephen Chamberlain, had padded the firm’s finances ahead of the sale. Lynch’s lawyers argued that HP was so eager to acquire Autonomy that it failed to adequately check the books .

Lynch had taken Morvill, who was one of his defense attorneys, on the luxury trip. 

Chamberlain was not on the Bayesian.

In what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a car struck and killed Chamberlain on Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.

“Steve fought successfully to clear his good name at trial earlier this year, and his good name now lives on through his wonderful family,” Chamberlain’s lawyer, Gary Lincenberg, said in a statement .

Royal vessel is a yacht belonging to Regis Lucis Caelum in Final Fantasy XV that also appears in Final Fantasy XV: Comrades . It can be used to travel the Cygillan Ocean . It has been seen piloted by Cid Sophiar , Regis's friend, and Noctis Lucis Caelum , Regis's son. Cid also mentions Regis used to sail the boat himself.

The vessel was made playable in Final Fantasy XV: Royal Edition , where the player can sail all across the oceans. The player can fish from the vessel and take photos on the boat.

Regis and his retinue once sailed to Accordo on the royal vessel. They used Cape Caem as a hideout before Regis became king , and the lighthouse was abandoned. The vessel was left at Caem in a secret dock underneath the lighthouse.

After the Crown City of Insomnia is attacked by Niflheim , the exiled Prince Noctis finds himself unable to continue to Altissia as the ferry there doesn't run. His party decides to use the royal vessel, and the mechanics Cid and Cindy come to Caem to repair the yacht for Noctis's use. Cindy sends Noctis and his retinue out to find mythril . After the boat is fixed, Noctis, Gladiolus , Ignis , and Prompto set off to Altissia with Cid steering the ship.

They dock the boat at Altissia and pass the immigration control. They leave Cid in charge of the vessel while they move on. Cid gives Noctis the key to the vessel and the retinue can explore the Cygillan Ocean at their leisure (though they can't approach Angelgard ), and even run into a whale . The vessel is swept beneath the waves and lost at sea after Leviathan's Revelation.

After Noctis disappears Eos is gradually overtaken by daemons . Hunters continue to search for the ship, and Dino Ghiranze —who once tried to aid Noctis to find a ferry to Altissia—informs Talcott Hester that the royal vessel has been discovered off the coast of Galdin Quay . The vessel is brought to the harbor at the resort and Dino prepares it for the Kingsglaive to head to Angelgard to uncover the mysteries of the island .

When Noctis awakens in Angelgard ten years later, he returns to Galdin Quay alone on the royal vessel the Kingsglaive had brought there for his use. He leaves the ship at the abandoned resort as he moves on.

Gameplay [ ]

The trip to Altissia is an in-game cutscene. While the boat moves and the camera spans around it, the party discusses the recent events, rumors they have heard and what they will do once they get to Altissia.

The PC and Royal Edition versions make the boat usable by the player with the same controls as the Regalia. Before concluding the events at Altissia the party is given the keys to the boat and the player can explore the oceans freely and fish from the vessel and take on quests.

The boat can be docked at Galdin Quay, Cape Caem and Altissia. If the player tries to visit Angelgard they get a small cutscene telling the player to seek to power of the gods. The Regalia will be parked where the player docks the vessel.

The player can listen to the music player , rest on the ship, fish, and take photos.

Fishing [ ]

Fishing spots are denoted on a radar and keep changing. When sailing, fishing-related quests become available when the player approaches the correct spot.

Open-Sea Angling [ ]

When sailing the royal vessel, Prompto speaks up of a fishing spot off the coast of Cape Caem. Sailing onto the spot completes the mission. The player can fish here and catch the Dynnel Barramundi .

Whopper in the Waves [ ]

When sailing the royal vessel, Ignis speaks up of a fishing spot near the islands en route to Altissia. Sailing onto the spot completes the mission. The player can fish there and catch a Nephilim Grouper .

Monster of the Deep [ ]

When sailing the royal vessel, Gladiolus speaks up of a fishing spot near Angelgard. Sailing onto the spot completes the mission. The player can fish the rare Mummy Bass there by hooking a fish and not reeling it, using the fish itself as the bait.

Mummy Bass is the hardest fish to catch. The player should have the ultimate fishing gear and use Dragon's Beard line. Eating Kupoberry Cheesecake also helps. One trick to reeling the fish in is to tap the pause button and adjust the reel/do not reel as needed, and always reel to the direction the fish swims, even before the prompts appear on-screen.

Bismarck [ ]

The party spots Bismarck.

The party can come across a whale called Bismarck on their voyage after accepting a quest for it from Maagho . Finding Bismarck lets the player fish for Styrial Bluefin Tuna , which yields one of the best recipes .

A rejected idea for the game included adamantite being a necessary component for the royal vessel. [1] Adamantite is obtained from the adamantoise .

Near the end of the voyage to Altissia Prompto comments "All work and no play," with Noctis replying "Makes Ignis a dull boy." All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy is a proverb used in various media productions, e.g. The Shining .

Fireworks Explosion Sinks Yacht in Marina del Rey

Fire authorities Thursday are investigating a fire stemming from a fireworks explosion on board a luxury yacht that sank while anchored in Marina del Rey.

The fire was reported shortly after 8:33 p.m. Wednesday and firefighters responded to 211 Basin A to douse the flames on the approximately three-story, 100-foot boat, the Los Angeles County Fire Department reported.

“According to boat owner 1,000 rounds of unspent ammunition and fireworks onboard,” the county fire department said in a statement Thursday morning. “No FF (firefighter) injuries. Cause of fire to be determined.”

Multiple explosions resonated throughout the harbor as The Admiral was consumed by flames.

Footage at the scene from CBS 2 showed the boat listing to one side before sinking in the harbor.

NBC 4 reported that an environmental hazard team was slated to arrive in Marina del Rey Thursday to assist with the cleanup of the burned vessel.

Two people on board escaped the flames unharmed, the fire department reported. ABC 7 reported one person suffered a cut on the arm.

KTLA reported that the fire stemmed from fireworks exploding on the vessel, threatening other boats nearby and several structures.

Mohamed Al Fayed, whose son Dodi was in a relationship with Princess Diana when they both died in Paris, has been accused of using a royal mansion to rape and sexually assault victims.

Five women have alleged they were raped by the Egyptian billionaire, who died last year aged 94, and a further 20 female employees claim Mr Al Fayed sexually assaulted them across multiple locations, reports The Sun .

The new documentary – called Al Fayed: Predator at Harrods – hears claims from women who worked at ritzy London department store Harrods from the late 1980s to 2000s, after an investigation by the BBC.

Female employees allege that assaults were carried out at different locations, including the company’s offices, in Mr Al Fayed’s London apartment, or on foreign trips often in Paris at the Ritz hotel.

And multiple women have even claimed that the billionaire raped or sexually assaulted them at “Villa Windsor” in Paris’s Bois de Boulogne park.

The lavish 14-room mansion was the home of post-abdication King Edward VIII and his wife Wallis Simpson.

The Duke and Duchess of Windsor’s luxurious French property featured on Netflix hit The Crown ’s third season.

Mr Al Fayed took out a 50-year lease on the 14-room, 19th century villa and the Egyptian billionaire would go on to rename it the Villa Windsor after completing a $20.2 million restoration back in 1990.

Now, one woman named Gemma – who worked as one of his personal assistants between 2007 and 2009 – has claimed Mr Al Fayed raped her at the historic Parisian villa.

Gemma described waking up to find him attempting to get into bed with her, adding: “I told him, ‘No, I don’t want you to’”.

“And he proceeded to just keep trying to get in the bed, at which point he was kind of on top of me and [I] really couldn’t move anywhere.

“I was kind of face down on the bed and he just pressed himself on me.”

She told the BBC that after the Harrods tycoon raped her she cried, while he got up and told her aggressively to wash herself with Dettol.

“Obviously he wanted me to erase any trace of him being anywhere near me,” she explains.

Mr Al Fayed – whose son Dodi died alongside Diana, Princess of Wales, in Paris in 1997 – has become known to a new generation through being featured in The Crown as someone who became a confidant of Princess Diana.

But another alleged victim has claimed that his portrayal as pleasant and gregarious was far from the truth.

Speaking to the BBC, Sophia, who worked as his personal assistant from 1988 to 1991, said Mr Al Fayed tried to rape her more than once.

One of those attempts took place at the Villa Windsor where the Egyptian billionaire allegedly tried to force himself on her.

Sophia claims she had to kick and scream for him to get off.

She said: “He was vile”.

Speaking about his portrayal in The Crow n, she said: “That makes me angry, people shouldn’t remember him like that. It’s not how he was.”

Following the allegations against its former owner, Harrods said in a statement to the BBC: “The Harrods of today is a very different organisation to the one owned and controlled by Al Fayed between 1985 and 2010”.

“IT is one that seeks to put the welfare of our employees at the heart of everything we do.

“Since new information came to light in 2023 about historic allegations of sexual abuse by Al Fayed, it has been our priority to settle claims in the quickest way possible.
