The Steamboat NATCHEZ Dinner Jazz and Daytime Jazz cruises run daily, year-round, in the style of authentic steamboats on the Mississippi River in New Orleans for centuries!  Cruising on the Steamboat NATCHEZ includes Steam Engine Room visitation, calliope, live jazz, and optional Creole food and local beverages.

Savor the beauty and romance of the New Orleans skyline aboard the Dinner Jazz Cruise. Enjoy the Dukes of Dixieland jazz band and a narration provided by our captain while cruising the Mighty Mississippi River.

There are two seating times for dinner, so please make sure to check availability of both if one is not available. The 1st dinner seating is from 6-7:15pm and the 2nd is from 7:45-9pm. Groups must be booked as one reservation in order to be seated together for dinner.

The Steamboat NATCHEZ is taking some time off, but her sister vessel, the Riverboat CITY of NEW ORLEANS will be taking her place. You’ll get the same authentic riverboat experience of a leisurely, two-hour cruise on the mighty Mississippi, enjoying traditional live jazz, craft cocktails, and all the beautiful New Orleans sites, while also exploring the newly renovated riverboat. Make sure you check out all four decks - the top deck view is a sight to see! Upgrade your ticket to include the dinner buffet.

Description

Not just a boat, the Steamboat NATCHEZ is a time machine that fills its passengers with the romance and marvel of yesteryear! Cruise along the Mississippi River and let the Steamboat NATCHEZ whisk you away with its atmosphere and ambiance, with everything from a museum- quality Engine Room to the ship's orders being called over an old-time megaphone. This evening jazz cruise is a great way to experience New Orleans' beauty and culture.

As you steam ahead, soak in breathtaking views of the city skyline while enjoying a New Orleans cultural experience – a live jazz performance performed by the New Orleans band Dukes of Dixieland, a Grammy nominee.

Enjoy dining inside or outside on a delectable Louisiana-style buffet dinner including prime rib, chicken, pasta and salad. Two separate dining times give you the flexibility to enjoy the evening at your own pace.

• Cut-off times are based on the experience’s local time.

A perfect city break is a balancing act; on the one hand you want to soak up the essence of a place, see its most famous sites, experience the culture and learn about its history. On the other, you also want that quintessential holiday feeling: that relaxing drink at sunset, a comfortable hotel to retreat to, and delicious meals where you don’t have to wash up.

Perched on the hillside on the banks of the River Douro in Portugal, Porto is a fast-becoming break of choice and one which offers all of the above. This summer Jet2.com and Jet2Citybreaks launched its flights and package holidays from Manchester Airport to the Portuguese city, providing an easy way for travellers to tap into this up-and-coming city break destination.

I went on a Jet2CityBreak to Porto and experienced their Discover More package which includes a Douro Valley wine tour. The beauty of this package is that it opens your eyes to more than just the city itself, and showcases an area you otherwise wouldn’t visit. Here’s what I discovered in Porto during my trip.

Where I stayed

I stayed at The Editory Boulevard Aliados Hotel, a boutique hotel centrally located just a short walk away from the city’s main sights. With a focus on interior design (each room is decorated differently), this hotel perfectly reflects Porto's flair for creativity.

The communal areas are stylish-meets-quirky; the dining room could double for a Wes Anderson set with neat tables and chairs and a monochrome zigzag floor. The carpet-like leopard print wallpaper on the walls may not be to everyone’s taste, but I thought it was fantastic and certainly made for a memorable background to breakfast each morning.

My room was decorated in calming shades of blue and it was just the right size for a city break, with generous storage, while the bed was extremely comfortable, helped by the fact you get a choice of pillows which is always handy if you’re a fussy sleeper like me. The compact bathroom featured marble fittings which added a touch of luxury, along with a deceptively large shower.

The hotel has a small outdoor dip pool where you can cool off after a day spent exploring the city; it’s an added bonus which you don’t always get in city-centre hotels.

A city of jewels

A signature feature of Porto’s buildings are their colourful tiles. The city’s buildings shine like jewels in the sunlight with tiles of every colour imaginable: sunshine yellow, leaf green and terracotta red.

Of course the most famous designs are the blue and white patterns which adorn the walls of Porto’s churches. These can be seen inside the Sao Bento Railway Station, which probably welcomes just as many tourists grabbing a photo as it does actual ticket-holders.

Another way of exploring the Porto area and admiring its architecture is with a tram ride from the city to the coast (or vice versa). The vintage tram runs from the Passeio Alegre stop at the mouth of the River Douro, all the way to the city. Along the route you’ll watch as large seaside villas giveaway to the towering buildings of Porto. The tram does get busy so plan your trip for the early morning or evening and avoid the crowds.

Hop on a tuk tuk tour

Sightseeing is a huge part of any city break, yet it can be heavy going on the feet - which is where a tuk tuk ride can come in handy. You can sit back and see every corner of the city without having to move a muscle.

Porto’s twisting and turning back streets can be just as pretty as its grand colourful buildings and it’s a delight whizzing past cafes filled with locals, barber shops playing loud jazz music and shoppers strolling through the streets.

Visit one of the world’s most famous book shops

Each day Livraria Lello welcomes queues of visitors wanting to see its iconic red staircase for themselves. This beautiful book shop wasn’t always this popular, but according to modern legend it’s magical interior inspired JK Rowling when she wrote Harry Potter (although she did live in Porto for a while, she’s since said she never actually went there).

It is now so popular that visitors have to book tickets to enter at timed slots, which can be redeemed against a purchase. But it’s well worth doing so as Livraria Lello’s interior is like no other and the collection of books contained within is simply exquisite.

Learn about the art of winemaking

Only a few hours away from the Douro Valley wine region, and given Porto is famous for its fortified wine, it’s only right that the city should be home to its own wine museum. Nestled in the heart of Gaia, which is actually another city that sits opposite Porto on the other side of the river, is WOW, housed in renovated old Port wine warehouses.

WOW is a collection of museums, restaurants and bars with a focus on Porto’s wine industry in particular - there’s even a museum dedicated to cork. I discovered everything there is to know about wine and winemaking at The Wine Experience, an immersive exhibition which tells the story of this household drink.

You can even take a quiz to find out what type of grape you are (I’m a Trincadeira by the way) and learn how to taste wine at the end of your visit.

Visit the Douro Valley

Trace the River Douro inland and explore the Douro Valley, a landscape of green sloping vineyards which feels a world away from the city, in fact it's more reminiscent of the rice terraces found in South East Asia than vineyards you find elsewhere in Europe. With Jet2’s Discover More package you can immerse yourself in the delights of the Douro Valley.

Dotted throughout the area are different wineries, many with their own restaurants where you can sample the wine and port produced there. I visited Sandeman (a famous brand you will see all over Porto and beyond) Quinta di Seuxo Winery and Vineyard which has a gorgeous restaurant terrace where you can try seasonal dishes while looking out over the valley (nevermind paddy fields, I felt like I was in Tuscany at this point - that's the holiday feeling box well and truly ticked). The winery offers wine and port tasting and has its own museum on site.

Another must while in the Douro Valley is a boat ride along the river. Gliding across the water, it gives you a sense of the scale of this beautiful region, and makes you appreciate what goes into every bottle.

Discover the historic treasures of Guimaraes

Just outside of Porto is the historic city of Guimaraes, a place which couldn’t feel any more different from Porto. Guimaraes is overlooked by its 10th century castle, perched on top of a hill.

An UNESCO world heritage site, the town centre is a rabbit-warren of mediaeval streets, reminiscent of the famous Shambles in York. You won’t find tall apartment buildings here, instead Guimaraes feels like a step back in time. It’s ideal for a morning or afternoon trip away from Porto and gives you a flavour of what else this corner of Portugal has to offer.

Explore the market

Sometimes the best way to experience a city is to do like the locals do: head to the market. Mercado do Bolhão is an explosion for the senses with stalls selling every food product imaginable.

There are colourful tins of sardines stacked up side by side, miniature bottles of olive oil perfect for gifts, cheeses of every variety imaginable and rather intimidating-looking salt cod (a Portuguese delicacy: cod which is imported from Norway and preserved with salt). You can buy a whole cod should you desire, but it doesn’t resemble anything you’d find in your local chippy.

Then there’s a rainbow of fruit, vegetables and flowers. As well as fresh produce, the market has bakeries and deli counties where you can grab fresh sandwiches, cakes and Spanish-style pincho snacks (small slices of bread topped with various delights and skewered with a cocktail stick).

For even more delicious cakes, head to Confeitarua do Bolhao opposite the market, where you can try fresh pastel de natas and much more. A popular choice is Bola de Berlim, inspired by the Berliner donut and usually eaten by locals on the beach.

Omsk: Western Siberia's hidden gem

Omsk was founded in 1716 when a wooden fort was constructed to house a Cossack unit in the area to protect the expanding Russian frontier from Central Asian nomadic incursions. It served various administrative functions throughout the 1800s and became infamous as a place of exile and incarceration. The city was rundown when selected as a hub for the Trans-Siberian railway in the 1890s. Many international trade companies and foreign consulates relocated here and the remnants of their offices can still be found in the city today.

The mystery of Kolchak’s gold

Omsk became the headquarters of the anti-Bolshevik white army led by Admiral Aleksandr Kolchak in 1918. In late 1918 there was a revolt in the city initiated by a leftist faction (Socialist Revolutionary Party or SPs) with 500 rebel deaths at the hands of Cossacks and Czechoslovak soldiers, a major factor in convincing the SPs to join the Bolsheviks. There is a large Soviet-era monument to the uprising at the corner of Lenina street and Broz Tito street.  

Kolchak was entrusted with a large portion of the Tsarist’s gold reserves, yet amazingly lost much of it. Supposedly 250 million rubles were lost (about $8 million at the time). Legend has it that they were buried near the village of Taiga, yet numerous excavations have turned up nothing. The area still attracts the occasional fortune seeker.

Kolchak’s headquarters are located at what is today the  Omsk Regional Archives  at Broz Tito St., 3. Nothing shows how much times have changed as the imposing Kolchak statue that was unveiled in 2012 around the corner. The statue guards  Kolchak restaurant , a four-story culinary complex featuring a steak house, an Irish pub, a Central Asian café and an Italian eatery.  For more details on where and how to dig Kolchak's gold, see  Top Ten Mysterious Lost Treasures of Russia

Dostoevsky and the Tsar

At 1.15 million people Omsk dwarfs the region’s second largest city, Tara (population 28,000). The city is split by the River Irtysh into two sections (all places of interest are on the right bank) with downtown emanating from the River Om.

Most foreigners have heard of Omsk via writer Fyodor Dostoevsky who spent four years here as a prisoner (1849-1853). He spent most of his time in Omsk in squalor and chains and with no books besides the Bible, however, it left an indelible mark on his memory and influenced his future literary output. There is a statue of the writer in chains grasping a Bible at the corner of Partizanskaya and Spartakovskaya streets, where Dostoevsky undoubtedly stepped many times. A  museum dedicated to the author's time in Omsk  is located nearby at Dostoevskogo St. 1. The local university is also named for him.

Tarskaya Street is one of the city’s oldest thoroughfares. It features a monument to victims of Stalinist repressions and the Tara gates, originally built in 1792 as one of the four entrances to the Omsk fort. Nearby stands the Assumption Cathedral, one of the largest churches in Siberia. Future Tsar Nicholas II laid the first stone here in 1891 when making his way back to St. Petersburg after his Eastern journey.

In Omsk you are never more than a few steps from the village, made clear when one exits the center to the north, where most houses are wooden and roads unpaved. Stroll along Bulatova and Rabinovicha streets, a well-preserved ensemble of wooden architecture.

Omsk’s cultural heritage 

The Pushkin State Library is worth a look with busts of Russian literary figures adorning the front side of the building. At the corner under the big “M” is one of several stations of the never completed Omsk metro. Construction began in 1992, but as of 2014 the project is again dormant due to financing problems.

One of Omsk’s most famous sons is Symbolist painter Mikhail Vrubel (1856-1910). Vrubel ignored contemporary trends and focused on themes from fairy tales, demons and religious subjects and also designed a majolica frieze for the Metropol Hotel in Moscow. Omsk’s Fine Arts Museum is named for him and features a number of  his works .

Over the years a number of tourists have tripped over the monument to Stepanych. This bust of a plumber rising from a sewer was the idea of Omsk’s former mayor after a trip to Slovakia in the 1990s. Stepanych has become one of the symbols of the city.

Omsk is a hockey town, with one of the major teams,  Avangard , in the KHL, Russia’s premiere professional league. Russian champions on several occasions, check out a match at Omsk Arena. But if you can’t catch a game there’s a large kiosk featuring the team’s merchandise at the airport.

Siberian   punk, jazz and the classics

While Omsk may not be on everyone’s radar musically, it does host a  musical theater  built just after the war. The building on 10 Let Oktyabrya Street is in the form of an enormous sloping grand piano.

Perhaps Russia’s most famous punk band,  Grazhdanskaya oborona  (Civil Defence), was formed here in 1982. The band was active until 2008 when lead singer Yegor Letov died of heart failure at age 43. Letov is buried at the Staro-Vostochnoe cemetery. A sprawling graveyard with thousands of graves, fans should stop at the administration for help in locating his grave.

In Russia, Omsk is known among the younger, tech-savvy generation primarily because of the “Omsk bird,” also known as Winged Doom. The origin of what became one of Russia’s most ubiquitous memes comes from a painting by German artist Heiko  Müller. One day in 2009 an Internet user posted this painting with the line, “Welcome to Omsk,” at the top. Additional versions menace viewers stating, “Don't try to leave Omsk,” and “Omsk is closer than you think.” Like many popular memes on the Internet, this one went viral and has become something like an unofficial symbol of the city.
