Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta

Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta

16 – 21 april, 2025, back in the 60’s….

Classic yachts in English Harbour had begun chartering and the captains and crews challenged each other to a race down to Guadeloupe at the end of the charter season. From this informal race, Antigua Sailing Week was formed in 1967, and in those days all of the yachts were classic.

Over the next 24 years…

The classic yachts were slowly outnumbered by the faster, sleeker modern racing yachts. A small number of classics still racing in 1987 found themselves grouped with cruising Class 3 which was less than ideal for these hard to manoeuvre full-keeled vessels.

And so it came…

Captains Uli Pruesse and Kenny Coombs hosted a meeting with other classic skippers onboard the magnificent schooner Aschanti of Saba and, several rums later, the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta was born.

richard mille cup regatta race

10 classic yachts competing at the Richard Mille Cup

The Richard Mille Cup is the newest regatta on the racing calendar that celebrates the pageantry and classic beauty of hand-crafted sailing yachts built before 1939 (or faithful replicas). Beginning in Falmouth earlier this month, the fleet of classics have worked their way across the Solent competing in a series of inshore and offshore races. As the inaugural regatta nears its final leg from Cowes to Le Havre, we take a look at the line-up of schooners and cutters vying for first place...

Length : 69.3m Builder : Van der Graaf Built : 1903

Commissioned by New York Yacht Club member Wilson Marshall, this three-masted schooner hit the headlines by winning the transatlantic Kaiser’s Cup in 1905. Atlantic covered a staggering 341 miles in 24 hours with an average speed of 14.1 knots. This world record would remain undefeated until 1998, making it the longest-standing speed record in the history of yachting. Atlantic was saved from the scrap yard on three separate occasions but unfortunately was broken up at the Newport News Harbor in 1982. Using copies of William Gardner’s original drawings, serial classic yacht restorer Ed Kastelein embarked on an extensive reconstruction project, and triumphantly relaunched Atlantic in 2010 with an identical sail plan and original lines.

Length : 65m Builder : Astilleros de Mallorca Built : 1984

Originally named Jessica, Adix remains one of the largest sailing yachts built since the 1930s. In the mid-late 1980’s she was bought and used as a promotional tool by Alan Bond, who named the yacht after his controversial beer XXXX. Interestingly, she was significantly shorter in the 80s than she is now. She underwent a massive cosmetic restoration in 1989 courtesy of Captain Paul Goss and naval architect Gerard Dijkstra . The subsequent refit included cutting the hull in half and adding a section, which brought her to her current length.

Length : 42m Builder : Herreshoff Built : 1915

This classic twin-masted schooner was built for Harold S. Vanderbilt, the naval architect who produced a succession of undefeated America’s Cup defenders between 1893 and 1920. Other notable owners include Canadian composer Walter Boudreau (who renamed her Janeen ) and Italian film producer and publisher Andrea Rizzoli, who had her restored at the Beconcini shipyard in La Spezia, Italy. Mariette and her sistership Vagrant are the last of the series still in service.

Length : 38.2m Builder : William Fife Built : 1911

As a descendant of Big Class racing and a precursor to the J-Class, Mariquita is the missing link in racing’s evolution. Once World War I broke out, she was sold and renamed Maud IV , where she spent five years safe in Scandinavian waters. She returned to Britain and resumed racing in 1924 until the outbreak of World War II when her luck run out. Sold and stripped of her rigging, sails, mast, and keel, Mariquita was moved to a mud berth where she spent 40 years as a houseboat. Restored by Fairlie in 1991, she set sail once more and has continued to take part in regattas, taking home the Big Boat Panerai Trophy in 2014.

Moonbeam IV

Length : 35m Builder : William Fife Built : 1920

Moonbeam IV is the last and largest of the four Moonbeams commissioned by eminent London lawyer Charles Plumtree Johnson. Construction started in 1914 but was not completed until 1920 due to the outbreak of World War I. Winning the Kings’ Cup in 1920 and 1923, a successful decade of racing followed until she was run out by the incoming J Class in the 1930s and the onset of World War II. In 1950 she was bought by Prince Rainier of Monaco and, for a time, settled into the quiet life. Renamed Deo Juvante (the Grimaldi family motto), Moonbeam IV took the newlyweds, the Prince and Grace Kelly, on their honeymoon.

Length : 28.7m Builder : William Fife Built : 1909

Built for the Duke of Medinacelli, friend to the King of Spain, Tuiga was designed identically to the King’s yacht Hispania so that they could race on equal terms. After collecting a string of second places, rumours spread that the Duke was holding back so as not to embarrass the King. The first 15-Metre to be restored at Fairlie, Tuiga has been owned by the Monaco Yacht Club since 1993 and is often skippered by Pierre Casiraghi, son of Princess Caroline of Hanover.

The Lady Anne

Length : 24.38m Builder : William Fife Built : 1912

The Lady Anne was built for Baron George Coats of Glasgow, who at the time of his death was one of the wealthiest men in Scotland. Commissioned in a bid to recover the coveted 15-Metre Cup from the Germans, Coats’ dreams were dashed by Charles Nicholson , who was drafting his revolutionary Marconi gaff-rig at the same time The Lady Anne was being built. She would end up adopting Nicholson’s rig only two years later. She is the sistership of fellow Richard Mille Cup competitor Tuiga.

Length : 19.2m Builder : J.G. Fay & Co (later Camper & Nicholson ) Built : 1903

Designed by Alfred Mylne, Kelpie is one of eight South Coast One Designs still in existence today and has lived through quite the underdog story. In 1914, she was accused of carrying artillery to be used against the Irish Free State government and in the 1960s, she was sold to Newton Ferrers Sailing School and suffered an interior fire that destroyed most of her interior. After a thorough restoration by Fairlie in 2014 (including a new rudder, stem, and sternpost), Kelpie went on to win her class in several regattas, including the Channel regatta, Mahon, and St. Tropez.

Length : 14m Builder : Aldous Ltd. Built : 1922

Designed for sailing in shoal waters, gaff cutter Ayesha is thought to be the only yacht ever designed by Arthur Boyes of Aldous Ltd. In 2001 she won her class in the Prada classic series in the Med, after sailing across the menacing Bay of Biscay to compete. She was bought in 2015 by serial classic yacht owner and restorer Richard Bond.

Length : 12.7m Builder : WT Jacket Built : 1910

This gaff cutter was commissioned by serial boat owner Henry S Norton, who entered Cynthia into various races in the Falmouth area. This included the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club’s Corinthian race in which Norton won the grand first prize of £3. Cynthia has been in Devon undergoing a meticulous, five-year restoration by retired rigger Peter Lucas , who first saw Cynthia decades prior while on holiday with his parents on the Isle of Wight.

Another ‘Classic’: Vintage racing yachts do battle off Marblehead’s shore

  • UPDATE: Lack of wind delays Junior Race Week until Tuesday

The Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta brought together 31 classic racing yachts, some well over 100 years old, to the starting line on Aug. 13 and 14.

classic yacht racing

Vintage, classics and spirit-of-tradition yachts competed for line honors in six divisions in a pursuit race format.

Hosted by the Corinthian Yacht Club, the event, now in its 24th year, has become an opportunity to bring together some of the most coveted and diverse classic yachts still racing.

The pursuit race format means that the slowest boats start first, the fastest last, so that they all finish around the same time, in theory.

Such was the case on Sunday when the site of so many beautifully preserved boats heading together to the finish line conjured up images of a golden era of yachting that seemed to peak in the 1980s.

classic yacht racing

Now in her 11th decade of racing, the 60-foot, 115-year-old “Neith,” designed by Nat Herreshoff, was the regatta’s overall winner and was awarded the W. Starling Burgess Trophy for best performance in the Vintage Yacht division.

The vintage yacht division comprises any yacht, though primarily ones made of wood, designed before 1950.

“Today was a good day, and we had fair breeze, and the course was a reach, which is great for us,” Keith Brown, a longtime crew member aboard “Neith,” said Sunday.

“Neith” is a longtime participant in the regatta, and Brown said they all appreciate the yachting traditions in Marblehead and its love of classic yachts.

classic yacht racing

“Neith” is owned by Van Brown of Mystic, Connecticut.

“We have been coming to this event for a long time, and it remains one of our favorites,” he said. “We had great breeze today, and sailing along the Nahant shoreline was spectacular.”

On Sunday, although the increasing wind velocity gave the bigger boats a speed edge as they headed south to Boston and rounded a government mark back along the Nahant shoreline, the fleet was remarkably close throughout because of the staggered starts.

The course provided a spectacular scene of 31 classics, along with 13 IODs (International One Design) in hot pursuit.

One of those making up ground rapidly was the 12-meter “Valiant” owned by Gary Gregory of Marblehead, who placed first in the Modern Classic Division.

Any boat designed after 1950 and built before 1980 whose rudders are separated from the trailing edge of the keel is considered a Modern Classic.

classic yacht racing

“The pursuit race format is based on expected speeds from different boats, but that can differ once out on the racecourse based on unforeseen conditions,” Gregory said. “Our size meant we started when many of the smaller boats were nearly at the mark off Boston, but it also meant that the wind was better than we had foreseen, and we were able to make up a lot.”

On Saturday, the fleet went towards Gloucester and rounded at Newcomb Ledge. Marblehead’s Quinn Valliancourt took line honors, finishing second overall in his division on his Herreshoff design “Rozi.”

“It is always uncertain in a pursuit race, as you can absolutely get the right timing and conditions on some days and on other days you are out of the running,” Valliancourt said. “The objective is that everyone should finish quite closely and converge at the finish. That is what I like about pursuit racing.”

While the Modern Classics included the winning 12-meter Valiant, the 13-strong division featured yachts like the Ted-Hood-built Little Harbor 37 “Sea Robin,” the Hinckley 41 “Black Magic” and the Hinckley “Valkyrie,” as well as the Swan 38 “Blue Pidgeon.”

classic yacht racing

“The beauty of the modern classic boat is they have the extended bow and overhanging stern and a classic sheer line,” said John Doub, owner of “Blue Pigeon.” “When rounding a mark, the sound of them going through the water is something we still marvel at.”

Fortunately, classic yacht racers understand that their vessels are unique in size, age and speed but one of the factors that makes classic racing so interesting is it touches on all of the unique history and legacy of both Marblehead and its links to yacht racing over the centuries.

classic yacht racing

“I think the Corinthian Classic reminds us to appreciate the aesthetic of sailing through the decades,” said Karen Finnocchio of Marblehead, who helmed the Modern Classic “Cynara,” owned by Jason Panos. “Classic boats also have a simplicity that forces us to draw on skills instead of technology. You go back to the basics.”

Finnocchio continued, “It is about perspective, too. The pandemic forced us to stop and slow down and look around. What we have here in Marblehead is so precious and envied by sailors around the world.”

Corinthian Classic organizer Timmy Dittrich agreed that he loves equally all of the classics, the IODs, the vintage and modern yachts. He views the event as an important one to preserve their presence in yacht racing.

“No boat comes out of the gate as a classic. They earn their place and become stewards of their boat as well,” said Dittrich, who competed on board “Neith.” “The reality in 2022 is that our modern classics have now also had their heyday, just as the vintage ones did.”

classic yacht racing

Some of the boats racing in Marblehead as “modern classics” are over 50 years old in their own right, Dittrich noted.

“Yet, it is very interesting to me that today’s yacht builders and designers remain inspired by the beauty of all of the early 20th-century boats and modern classics,” Dittrich said. “What we want to do is try and preserve those great days, those feelings, and those rivalries in yachting that are so hard to find today. The Corinthian Classic is a place to find that experience. This will go away unless we work to preserve it.”

Classic-Car Event ‘the Bridge’ Celebrates a Racing Legacy in the Hamptons

S ometimes the toughest race cars can look almost genteel when parked on an impeccably manicured golf course—even one connected to what was once a world-class track. The car was a 1965 semi-lightweight Series One Jaguar 4.2-liter E-Type Roadster, driven by Stirling Moss and Win Percy.

It looked like it was ready to go around the Bridgehampton circuit in Long Island, New York, even though that historic location is only partly intact (with certain ionic sections lovingly restored).

Of course, all was not what it seemed. The Jaguar was actually a recreation by Jeremy Broad of the 1960s factory lightweights, and Moss drove it in the 1991 Mountain Challenge on the Isle of Man, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the E-Type. Percy drove it later, at England’s Donington Park in 2001. Moss’ signature is on the hardtop.

This was just one of the many fascinating cars at the eighth edition of the Bridge, held at its namesake golf club in Bridgehampton, with views of Sag Harbor and Shelter Island. Robert Rubin, a former Wall Street trader turned writer and vintage racer, had hoped to preserve the track for racing but local opposition was fierce. Instead, he opened the Rees Jones-designed golf course in 2002. Rubin hosts the Bridge with attorney Jeffrey Einhorn and entrepreneur Shamin Abas. With its food and drink stations, plus booths for exclusive lifestyle merchandisers, it’s somewhat akin to the Quail, an event that occurs annually during Monterey Car Week. There’s no judging, just a lot of looking, with drones circling overhead.

Another historic racer was no ordinary 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda. The car, restored in Connecticut to its 1971 specifications, was shipped to France when completed and compiled a winning record there through 1973, mostly with Henri Chemin at the wheel.

Joe Buzzetta was a winning Porsche U.S. factory racer in the 1960s, with Bridgehampton as his home track. He quit racing in 1970 as cars got faster and faster, and that probably contributed to his living until 2023 and leaving nine grandchildren. Buzzetta’s legacy was celebrated at the Bridge with cars from his collection, including a 1964 Porsche 904 (his favorite brand) and a 1964 Elva-Porsche.

Parked near these competition cars was one that certainly looked the part: A 1960 Aston Martin DB4 outfitted circa 2010 by specialist Nicholas Mee to be one of the fastest examples on the road.

In one corner, possibly being mistaken for a bright red kit car, was one of the most significant Shelby AC Cobras, a 1963 Le Mans roadster, one of eight built with competition in mind. Specifications include magnesium wheels, big fender flares and hood scoop, a 37-gallon fuel tank, and a tuned 4.7-liter V8. The red example on display was the eighth, and after being sold to the privateer George Butler it ran at the Bahamas Speed Week events in late 1963, with a first-place class win in the Governor’s Trophy Race. The Shelbyf then finished seventh at the Daytona 2000-Kilometer event. The car has an extensive race history.

And what’s that highly unusual Mustang fastback, powered by a modified 302-cubic-inch V-8. It turned out to be perhaps the earliest Mustang on the road today—a 1963 pre-production example, the ninth of 15, known as “Shorty.” As owner and Long Island resident Howard Kroplick says, most (all but three) of the custom-built S-code pre-production cars were destroyed. But this one, the two-seat, 18-inches-shorter Mustang III “car of the future,” was stolen from Ford after its touring season by  company designer Vince Gardner in 1965, apparently with the aim of preserving it from the crusher. By the time the car was rediscovered, Ford had gotten an insurance settlement, and an Aetna executive became the Mustang III’s owner. The crusher was thwarted.

There were modern cars, too, of course. The 2,107-horsepower, made-in-Croatia Rimac Nevera R EV, parked near the entrance, is capable of reaching 60 miles per hour in 1.74 seconds, and achieving a truly awesome 256 miles per hour. The company says the US$2.5 million R, with a 108-kilowatt-hour battery pack, redefines “what an electric hypercar can achieve.” An Italian Pagani Imola Roadster with 850 horsepower and another astronomical price tag was parked nearby, and is one of just eight globally.

After debuting at the Quail this year, the Republic of San Marino-built Eccentrica V12, based on the Lamborghini Diablo, was on hand at the Bridge. Only 19 will be built. A most unusual offering was the Luminari “Cachemire” 190SL, a car that resembled Mercedes-Benz’ smaller sports car of the 1950s but was based on a modern SL600 and powered by a 493-horsepower, 590-pound-foot V12. Sixty miles per hour is achieved in 3.6 seconds.

FariCars brought two very well-appointed custom Mercedes Sprinter vans, the more elegant of the two priced at US$445,080. The firm’s “Magnum Opus” Launch Edition (of eight units) features seats from the S-Class, an Alcantara-upholstered power partition, multiple TVs and refrigerator, coffeemaker, LED starlight headliner, and much else.

Watchmaker Richard Mille was a major partner for the gathering, along with Drift Capital (an investment company whose portfolio is rare and valuable cars), FariCars, Rimac, Everrati, and Dietl (a premium car relocation company), among others. Visitors could take a look at private plane offerings from Vistajet, and sample Drumshanbo gin, Palm Beach wines, and Mount Holly beer. Two stations offered caviar.

The aforementioned Robert Rubin is the author of many books, including a new one that dissects the 1971 movie Vanishing Point over nearly 600 pages. It’s a road movie starring Barry Newman as a Vietnam veteran on the lam in a white 1970 Dodge Challenger 440 R/T. Unlike the Bullitt Mustangs, two of which were recently rediscovered, no surviving Challengers are known. But a close replica was at the Bridge.

I Loved Tudor’s Sailing Watch Even More While Aboard an Actual Racing Yacht

The weather report in Barcelona wasn’t looking particularly promising last month as I boarded a vessel on the Mediterranean. Leaving the Spanish coast behind me, storm clouds gathered overhead as the Swiss and French teams geared up to face off in the 37th edition of the America’s Cup. Then again, I was reminded, a bit of wind was a welcome sensation—without it, this regatta couldn’t get underway.

If you’ve never been buzzed by an AC75, the class of racing yacht used during the current America’s Cup , it can be difficult to imagine the sensation. I no longer had to imagine as the Alinghi Red Bull team’s AC75 reached its top speed of 50 knots (58 mph) and seemed to be nearly levitating as it lifted out of the water. And if it’s flying in anything resembling your general direction, this can be quite unnerving.

Even if you’re not a sailor, you’re likely familiar with America’s Cup anyway because of how frequently it intersects with the watch world. Tudor , Omega , and Panerai have all gotten in on the action, the logos of their storied brands featured prominently on mainsheets attached to each vessel’s 26.5-meter mast. For each edition of the Cup in which one of these maisons is sponsoring a team, said company will often debut a special watch, sometimes with a dedicated sailing complication such as a regatta timer. Two of the most compelling of these watches were introduced just last year: Tudor’s Pelagos FXD and FXD Chrono Alinghi Red Bull Racing Edition . As I discovered earlier this month, they become even more compelling aboard the actual yacht they’re inspired by.

The racing yacht wasn't the only thing that made me feel like a member of team Alinghi that day. I also got a chance to wear the FXD from Tudor's Pelagos line. The Pelagos collection comprises the brand's most professional diving watch, complete with heavy-duty specs, some military influence, and perhaps a bit more character than the brand’s flagship Black Bay collection. Introduced in 2012, the Pelagos line has seen continuous improvement, culminating in the recent “ FXD .” (The “FXD” is for “fixed,” a design with military provenance that secures a strap to the wrist without possibility of spring bar failure.) The black-dialed FXD immediately stole my heart upon its release late in 2023, when I dove with it in Florida.

I wasn’t the only one wearing this purpose-made FXD. The entire Alinghi Red Bull racing team—from team owner to engineer—was kitted out with them. For me, it’s a cool watch; for the sailing team, it’s essential gear. Timing is everything out on the open water. “We use a watch [the Pelagos FXD] that’s in complete sync with what we do here,” says Jaume Triay, a young engineer on the Alinghi Red Bull team who’s spent the past two years living in Barcelona to prepare for the competition. “It’s a low-weight, high-performance watch, and it’s made out of the same materials [as the AC75]; I think there’s a nice synergy.”

Everything about the Alinghi FXD is made with yacht racing in mind. The watch is made from carbon fiber to mirror the carbon-hulled AC75 yachts, with matte blue-purple dials to match the Alinghi Red Bull livery. The numbers on the bezel are arranged in the reverse orientation from those on a dive watch. Why? On a yacht, one needs to quickly calculate countdowns, which is why the numbers go from 60-0 in a counterclockwise direction, rather than the more common 0-60. I had never spent much time with either of the new FXD watches before, but had the opportunity to wear the time-only version during my time in Barcelona for the 37th edition of the America’s Cup. I’m officially a fan.

33 Fall Style Upgrades to Help You Really Start Dressin'

The dial is a classic Tudor affair: Done up in matte Alinghi Red Bull blue, it features a snowflake handset and matching white indices, all of which are nicely lumed with plenty of Super-LumiNova. (The indices, hands, and all bezel hashmarks glow ice blue in low light.) A red second hand matches up with red “Pelagos” text—no doubt in a reference to vintage Rolex models and in keeping with other Pelagos watches—and the rehaut, which contains the outer minute track, features the words “ALINGHI RED BULL RACING” in the upper quadrant.

“Timing is important in many aspects [of what the team does],” Triay says. “It’s important in planning, such as how much time we need to train before competing, and how much time we have to design the boat. But then also, you can think about maneuvers: Are we going to do a slow, nicely controlled maneuver, or a sharp turn executed as quickly as possible? What is best, and how do you find replicable timing in order to analyze different strategies?”

Indeed, timing was everything as we sailed out into the open ocean outside Barcelona aboard the yacht in order to watch Alinghi compete against the French team. The Swiss needed to win this particular race, lest it be forced to win three in a row in the double-round robin of the Louis Vuitton Challenger Section Series—or face elimination. I was eager to try aligning my bezel to properly time the race countdown as announced aboard the ship’s television, where the race was being broadcast live.

Stepping out onto the deck in the rain (we picked a poor day for sailing) Alinghi’s AC75 was visible in the distance, tacking hard in the driving wind and water. Its complement of ultra-skilled sailors, however, proved their competence and seamanship, crossing the starting line just as the countdown ended and gaining a significant start on the French team. Roughly 20 minutes of hard sailing later, up and down a course established by remote-controlled buoys to align with the direction of the wind, the Swiss team captured its much-needed victory.

After the win, high-fives were swapped, congratulations were offered, audible sighs of relief were exhaled. As we sailed back into harbor, we passed the AC75 furling its sails, yelling our collective “mazel tov” at the team and chase boat crews. I glanced down at the FXD and thought back to my childhood summer camp experience and the activity I most enjoyed: Sailing small Sunfish dinghies on Plunkett Reservoir. I haven’t sailed in over 20 years, but the thought suddenly crossed my mind: Maybe it’s time to sail again—Pelagos fixed firmly on wrist.

New York Yacht Club to Host 2025 Team Racing Worlds

New York Yacht Club to Host 2025 Team Racing Worlds in Sonar Keelboats

Newport, R.I. — The New York Yacht Club, which sparked the keelboat team racing revolution with the creation of the Hinman Masters Team Race in 2000, will see this discipline attain the highest competitive level in the sport when it hosts the World Sailing 2025 Team Race World Championship, May 28 to June 1, at Harbour Court in Newport, R.I.

The first team racing world championship in a decade will be sailed in the Club’s fleet of 23-foot  Sonar keelboats  in a two-on-two format. While not as widespread as the three-on-three format that is used in scholastic and collegiate racing in the United States and elsewhere around the world, the two-on-two format has won a lot of support with its easy-to-understand scoring format—whichever team finishes in last position loses the race—non-stop action and smaller team size.

“When this came forward, when the bid package came out, we said of course we’d want to run this,” says Susan Daly, co-chair of the New York Yacht Club’s Team Racing subcommittee. “It’s a natural fit for us given our history both with keelboat team racing and having run a team race worlds in 2005 in Vanguard 15 dinghies. This world championship is a great way to kick off a packed 2025 regatta calendar at Harbour Court.”

In addition to the Hinman Masters regatta—for which skippers must be 45 or older and crew must be 40 or older—the New York Yacht Club runs three other highly regarded team race events each summer: the Morgan Cup, the New York Yacht Club Grandmasters and the Women’s 2v2. The Club also created the Global Team Race Regatta and hosted it in 2018 and 2022. The Club expertly maintains a fleet of 22 Sonar sailboats that are reserved for team racing and the occasional fleet race regatta. In the four team-race regattas hosted by the New York Yacht Club, spinnakers are used. But the format for the world championship will mandate the jib-and-main-only configuration.  A dozen teams are anticipated, including one from the host New York Yacht Club. The remainder will be qualified through their member national authorities. For United States sailors hoping to compete, a qualifying regatta is anticipated in early 2025. The NOR for the 2025 Team Race World Championship can be found  here . The next edition will be held in August 2026 at the Gamla Stans Yacht Sällskap, Stockholm, Sweden, and is supported by the City of Stockholm and the Swedish Sailing Federation.
