6 fixings attach ply deck to hull but what the hull is made of I do not know. Mine has many coats of paint. Original transfer on deck `Bowman Racing Yacht` surrounds an archer or bowman with `Ridlington Norfolk` below.

A classic Bowmans of Norfolk pond yacht in good original condition, ready to sail. With the stamp of Bowman racing yacht made in England Ridlington Haisbro Norfolk. Measures 25.5" deck to top of mast. 4.25" beam. 22" long and 25.5" deck to bottom of keel.

Hull only of a vintage model racing yacht by Bowman of Ridlington, Haisboro, Norfolk. Project for the enthusiast, this is just the hull, no mast, spars or rigging. The dimensions are (approx) length -600mm, beam 110mm, depth to keel 55mm, Keel depth 115mm. The hull is solid timber and the keel is steel. Some pin holes in deck from previous rigging etc., I believe this model dates from the 1920’s (internet research)

Bowman Racing Yacht in fair condition sails are a little twisted but I'm sure they can be sorted by a patient person

Bowman Starlight 46 review: from the archive

Matthew Sheahan

Bowman believed the time was right for the Starlight range to take another step forward, this time into a much bigger boat, the Bowman Starlight 46.

Product Overview

Manufacturer:.

The Bowman Starlight name made a big impact on the performance cruising scene in the Eighties, particularly with the Bowman Starlight 35, of which 102 have been built to date. Now, the new Bowman Starlight 46 joins those previous yachts. But it does come at a cost, is the Starlight 46 worth the extra money as compared to some of her European counterparts.

The mission in creating the Starlight 46 was clear: to create a performance cruiser that would be equally at home bluewater cruising, doing the odd race round the cans or offshore.

These are precisely the qualities that had held the Starlight 35 and Starlight 39 in such good stead. A simple goal on the face of it but the competition in this league is fierce.

Clearly Bowman had to be shrewd to stand any chance. Top of their list were quality and performance, two factors that don’t always go together as the demands of quality often pile the weight on, reducing performance.

The keel is bolted to a moulded stub with 11 bolts and the cockpit drains exit below the waterline to avoid streaks on the hull topsides.

But Stephen Jones recognised the opportunity to produce a good yet manageable performer by using modern and well-balanced lines. The result is that the new Bowman Starlight 46 is one of the sleekest looking cruisers around.

Like the First she’s a beamy boat but the Starlight carries her beam well aft, providing a wide and powerful transom as well as a spacious cockpit, two significant advantages.

The downside is that such delta shapes tend to cause the boat to pitch down by the bow when heeled as the beamy after sections lift the rear out of the water.

Bowman-Starlight-46-review-in-action4-credit-Christel-Clear

The Starlight has the capacity to carry more crew when required.

This in turn can cause steering problems as well as a propensity to create weather helm. However, none is in evidence when you sail the Starlight.

Jones has managed to balance her waterlines by adding volume to the bow sections but without compromising her line entry forward.

On deck the first thing you notice is just how spacious and practical the cockpit is. Twin wheels dominate and provide plenty of advantages.

Bowman-Starlight-46-review-helm-credit-Christel-Clear

The 46 has a highly workable cockpit with twin wheels.

The walk-through access to the fold-out transom and boarding ladder is one. The position of the primary winches, inboard and close to the helmsman, is another. Halyard winches flank the companionway and all control lines are led back to clutches.

On the face of it, then, a conventionally laid out deck with a few clever details such as the easy access to all under-deck control lines.

Bowman-Starlight-46-review-in-action3-credit-Christel-Clear

The Starlight may have a powerful rig but she’s well suited to short-handed sailing.

But look a little closer and the detail starts to shine through.

Twin (switchable) engine controls for each wheel, two completely independent steering linkages and an independent link for the auto pilot provide four separate means or steering the boat if you include the emergency steering system.

She also has huge aft lockers, provision for several different control line layouts, she can be rigged as a cutter and can take a self-tacking staysail if required.

This is a boat that has been well thought out for most eventualities and configurations.

Below deck and construction

Doing battle in the production market has never been an option for Bowman, who have preferred instead to stick with their reputation for semi-custom building.

The new Bowman Starlight 46 is no different and is a good example of how the company have managed to combine their wealth of experience in bluewater detailing with a modern performance hull form.

Although the performance aspect is new territory for them, when it comes to the basic build, there is little difference between this new model and the build of a rugged Bowman 48DS.

Bowman-Starlight-46-review-galley-credit-Christel-Clear

The longitudinal galley has plenty of stowage space.

Bowman may always produce their own plugs, but all their hulls are moulded by Northshore to a very high standard.

Not even the dark blue hull and a low winter sun could highlight any unevenness in the hull; this is quality right from the start.

During the fit-out the only areas to utilise any additional moulding are the heads, beyond this every bulkhead, longitudinal and transverse member is glassed into the hull.

Bowman-Starlight-46-review-saloon-credit-Christel-Clear

The interior is thoughtfully finished throughout.

This method of construction takes time, but Bowman insist on sticking to their principles. And there are plenty of other examples of such high standards.

The rudder shaft has stainless Edson bearings, the prop shaft is supported in a full-length moulded-in shaft log to provide the best possible support – this is a shaft that is aligned for life, no matter what the prop might encounter.

Bowman-Starlight-46-review-saloon2-credit-Christel-Clear

The interior displays an impressive level of detail.

The rudder is mounted on a half-skeg, with a solid-looking and beautifully built bronze unit providing the bottom bearings for the rudder blade.

The keel is bolted to a moulded stub with 11 bolts and the cockpit drains exit below the waterline to avoid streaks on the hull topsides.

Whether you look at the heavy-duty engineering or the fine detailed design work, both are impressive, as is the consistently high quality of build.

As far as accommodation layout is concerned, you can have whatever you like.

According to Bowman boss Charles Maunder, a healthy chunk of the time at the beginning of the build process is tied up with developing the layout and specification with the owner.

The result on boat No I was a beautifully built, robust layout finished in American cherry.

This boat was designed for two families to share, with the option to sail together from time to time, so four cabins were required.

Bowman-Starlight-46-review-nav-station-credit-Christel-Clear

The Starlight has a huge chart table.

On the other hand, boat No 2 has just two double cabins and a completely different layout for the galley and navigation station.

The bottom line is that building to these standards takes time and Bowman plan to build around six or these boats a year.

Unlike the current crop of popular deck saloon cruisers of a similar length, the Bowman Starlight 46 does not have a dedicated engine room, preferring instead to position the engine beneath the lower companionway step. The result was that it was noisier under engine than you might expect.

The Bowman Starlight 46 is fitted with a two-bladed MaxProp which was thought to be over-pitched which contributed to the vibrations.

Setting this aside and given that the Startlight 46 did not have bow thrusters, it was easy to handle under engine. And Light enough to respond quickly to the throttle ahead and astern and having tight enough turning circles to get you out or trouble. Little cause for complaint here.

Under sail, the Bowman Starlight 46 was well balanced, responsive and gave the impression of being able to be pushed hard without causing the helmsman too much stress.

Not only can you sit further and more comfortably to weather (or leeward) thanks to the twin wheels, but the helm feels direct and crisp without being too lively.

This is no mean achievement – in my experience, the complexity of such an arrangement means there are more builders who get it wrong than get it right.

But there’s more to praise than the feel on the helm. We tested the Bowman Starlight 46 in 17-32 knots true and even in the strong gusts she remained surefooted and easy to keep on track.

Most of the time she seemed happy to cruise effortlessly at 9-10 knots, making her a fast and easy passage maker.

  • Droit de Suite – the Artist`s Resale Right

Artist's Resale Right (ARR) is a royalty payable to a qualifying artist or the artist`s heirs each time a work is re-sold during the artist`s lifetime and for a period up to 70 years following the artist`s death.

Following the introduction of the ARR Regulations, Gilding’s has decided an amount equal to the resale royalty will be collected from the buyer of a work of art covered by these Regulations. This will then be passed to the relevant collecting agency.

Resale Royalty applies where the hammer price is £1,000 or more. Resale royalty does not apply when the hammer price is less than £1,000. The total amount of Resale Royalty on any one sale or lot shall not exceed £12,500.

The Resale Royalty amount is calculated as follows:

Royalty for the portion of the Hammer Price

From £1,000 to £50,000 (GBP) = 4% From £50,000.01 to £200,000 (GBP) = 3% From £200,000.01 to £350,000 (GBP) = 1% From £350,000.01 to £500,000 (GBP) = 0.5% Exceeding £500,000 (GBP) = 0.25%

Invoices will be issued in Pounds Sterling. From 1st April 2024, the Resale Royalty will be calculated in GBP (£ Sterling).

Each time you bid on a lot covered by the ARR, you agree to pay an amount equal to the resale royalty, if you are the successful bidder. This amount will be added to your invoice.

Lots that may be affected by ARR will be identified by the symbol “ §"  next to the Artist Name in the Title, or lot number in print catalogue form.

Model Ship Drawings For Detailed Models

1. Maritime Models Restoration Process

Thorough research is essential for understanding the historical context and original appearance of the model ship or boat.

This may involve:

  • studying archival documents
  • historical photographs
  • naval records
  • and similar artifacts

This helps me to gather information about the vessel’s design, construction, and usage.

2. Cleaning Miniature Models

Each cleaning step brings out more of the marine miniatures original beauty..

Cleaning a miniature model vessels is a delicate process. I use soft brushes, cotton swabs, and gentle solvents to remove dust and grime without damaging the original materials.

It’s important to be gentle to avoid damaging any fragile parts. Sometimes, I find old varnish or paint that needs to be carefully stripped away.

It’s amazing how a thorough cleaning can reveal the hidden beauty of a model that’s been neglected for so long.

Detailed Model Boat And Ship Commissions

3. Maritime Models Repairs & Replacements

Repairing any maritime model vessel requires patience and precision..

Whether it’s hand-carving a new mast, sewing new sails, or carefully rigging new lines, each step requires precision and a deep understanding of the original construction techniques.

I always strive to use materials that match the original as closely as possible, ensuring that the restored model is both authentic and durable.

The goal is to make repairs that are seamless and maintain the model ship or boats authenticity.

4. Painting & Finishing Miniature Vessels

The final touches that bring the model ship or boat replica back to life..

Using historically accurate colours and techniques, I aim to preserve the model’s aged appearance while giving it a fresh look.

Varnishing or waxing protects the model from future deterioration, ensuring it can be admired for years to come.

It’s incredibly satisfying to know that my work helps preserve a piece of maritime history.

Bowman 48, BOANDARO 1 Main

Broker’s Comments

BOANDARO is a very rare centre cockpit Bowman 48. Built in the UK, these Bowmans have long been recognised by the British yachting establishment as being the finest British built design ever offered to the conservative, long distance sailor.

BOANDARO is no exception and has been very well maintained by the current owner with comprehensive refits over the years and an extensive list of equipment, allowing an owner to tackle any ocean. These yachts are famous for their stable and safe seagoing qualities and on deck you will find a heavy duty rig offering easy shorthanded sailing or space for plenty of crew when needed. Down below she offers three spacious cabins, a comfortable interior saloon plus large linear galley. Overall, she is fully equipped and ready to go for her next adventures.

Owner’s Comments

BOANDARO is a truly excellent sailing yacht. She has served as an ideal family sailing boat for summer holidays, as well as a long-legged blue water heavy weight for trips to Iceland and Greenland. More recently she has been an excellent boat to live aboard; very comfortable with plenty of storage space. She has a superb motion, a good turn of speed and can hold high average speeds. She is also surprisingly easy to sail single handed, and I have done some long trips in such a fashion. She is beautifully built and very strong. In challenging conditions she just digs in and settles. There is no drama, and she gives a great sense of confidence.

BOANDARO is a very well-balanced yacht and the cutter rig is very powerful with enough sail area to keep her moving in light conditions as well as adequate power beating in brisk offshore conditions. You cannot make her slam, and downwind her keel and balanced ends means that she tracks very steadily.

BOANDARO is the only Bowman 48 Centre Cockpit, as the mould was changed for the later Deck Saloon model that has become the trend. However, I have found her layout ideal. In fact, the lack of large windows means that she is delightfully cool in hot bright summer conditions down below, and conversely warm and dry in arctic conditions. It is also worth noting that she is very well behaved in Marinas. I have debated fitting a bow thruster, and indeed already have a dedicated circuit breaker ready for one. However, each year I manage without, even singlehanded. My view is that now she has a properly specified propeller with controllable prop wash, and 40° of rudder available, she just doesn’t need one. Choosing the right moment, and using ropes and springs appropriately is all that is required.

It is a very hard decision to put her up for sale, but a smaller boat would now be more suitable, and she probably needs another family to delight and look after her. For those looking to go further afield she just needs fuel and food and she is well found and completely ready to go anywhere.

Bowman Models produced live-steam powered models of boats and railway locomotives, and also stationary engines useful for powering Meccano models. This "steam-power" niche in the Hobbies catalogue was later taken over by their later supplier Malin Models ( Mamod )

THE FASCINATION OF STEAM At this stage, if not earlier, it becomes apparent that something is sadly lacking. A closer study of the real machines emphasizes the unreality of a steam crane which is turned by hand, a boat which runs with a silent (and expensive) electric motor, or a miniature express train which has to be re-wound at short intervals with a large key. The struggle towards realism must inevitably go a step further and nothing will satisfy the budding engineer until his models work like real ones, amidst clouds of steam and the roar of a healthy steam engine. 'Apart from the sense of realism obtained, there is a delightful thrill in the running of a real steam engine, whether it be a locomotive, steamboat or stationary engine to drive models. The filling of the boiler, the oiling of the pistons, the control of the burners and the final realistic. "phut-phut" as the model moves away under her own steam, holds a fascination which few of us can resist. THE PRICE PROBLEM AND ITS SOLUTION The great drawback to steam engines, however, has always been their price. As much as £5 had to be paid in the old days for a sound and powerful British stationary engine, but even these were not adapted for actually building into Meccano and other constructional models, so that even at this price a good deal of realism was lost. It is true that cheaper foreign engines were available but in a general way they were flimsily constructed and in practice proved hopelessly underpowered and unreliable. A reasonably powerful British steam locomotive cost at least £6 and although cheaper foreign steam locos could be obtained, they had hardly enough power to pull themselves along and were quite useless when coupled to anything like a load. Moreover they needed constant refuellîng, and taken all round„were far from satisfactory. Steam driven boats were in a very similar position and it therefore became the ambition of Bowman Models, backed by many years’ experience, to build up an business for the production of real engines in miniature together with other models at a price within the reach of all. How far they have succeeded is shown in the following pages, and by the fact that Bowman Models are now world renowned for their marvellous performance and lasting qualities. Every model herein listed, even the very cheapest, is completely different from the accepted continental production. Instead of fragile stampings sweated together, lead pistons, and bright colours, nothing but the finest British raw materials are used and British labour is employed throughout. All parts are accurately machined and screwed and bolted together. Pistons and cylinders are of special metals lapped to a dead fit and the valve faces are accurately ground to give perfectly steam tight joints. The result is that Bowman Models are real models and develop such unusual power that they are sold as "double power" engines, a designation which carries a guarantee that they are double the power of any other engines in the world of equal price. They are not toys in any sense of the word but "real engines in miniature.
